Cambridge Apprenticeship Day

L Lynch Plant hire were delighted to take part in the Highways England A14 Project Apprentice and Careers day hosted by Cambridge Regional College on the 28th January. The project needs to attract over 200 apprentices and well over 1000 operatives covering all trades over the project which consists of an upgrade to the A14 between Ellington, west of Huntingdon, to the Milton junction on the Cambridge Northern Bypass. Includes widening the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury. The existing A14 trunk road between Cambridge and Huntingdon is well known for congestion and delays with almost 85,000 vehicles use this stretch of the A14 every day; a lot more than originally designed for around quarter of this is heavy goods vehicles – well above national average for this type of road The government has made a provision for £1.5 billion of capital investment for this scheme. The proposals will be funded through a combination

of contributions from Central Government, local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships. Once work is complete the existing A14 will be ‘de-trunked’ between Huntingdon and Swavesey and between Alconbury and Spittle’s interchange. This means the road will gain county road status and Highways England will pass responsibility for the road to the local authority. All the major contractors who are building the scheme along with, the CITB, Lynch Plant and other Plant hire providers, which aloud the possible candidates to try different plant and equipment via simulators and expectance the real thing with some operator trials under supervision with assessors and restricted equipment functionality. The event was well attended and Lynch were able to confirm over 100 applications from qualified operators or persons looking for apprenticeships. Operations Director Mark Kennedy attending the event Said “ it

is important for Lynch Plant to take part in events like this, not only to find employees for this project but to encourage young people into our industry, for them to understand the opportunities available to them that they may not be aware of, today we meet many of those future prospect who will hopefully see our industry as the career opportunity they are looking for”

Where have we been working lately?

We are supporting a new jetty being built with the Old One making way for a Tunnel being drilled 60M below which will connect to a larger tunnel to support the new super sewer being built in London.

Project to replace existing 5 km Pipeline which is sitting on the bed of the estuary rotting under the Humber Bridge from Goxhill to Paull East Yorkshire.

Lynch received a call in September to supply a number of machines for the above project. We quickly assembled a team managed by Garry Cross who oversee the project from start to finish.

We have supplied a lorry today to assist with moving some material around the site and his comments were our driver Dan has been exceptional and a credit to the business.

Valon our operator had been working closely with the main contractor and performed to a very high standard illustrating the Lynch "Core Values" and meeting higher demands.

At our peak we had in excess of 30+ operated machines and our brand new 50T Excavator was in situ for several weeks.

A New Tunnel to be built which on completion will be filled with water and have a floating gas pipeline. 15/20 % of UK gas from the North Sea flows through this pipeline. The new pipeline will also have storage capacity.

Dan has also secured further works with another client on this site which Gary has confirmed we are completing on Tuesday. Now that's "Meeting Hire Demands"

Hemel Hempstead Adopt Chain and Lifting Accessory Safety Process

Noting that Depots hold lifting accessories (chains, strops, shackles etc) that are subject to the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), a new process has been adopted in the workshop at Hemel Hempstead to safely manage strops and chains when in use. This will soon to be rolled out nationwide.

Service Hemel Hempstead now operate a colour code system for all strops and lifting chains. Each strop and chain are now fitted with a coloured cable tie and where applicable a metal safety tag detailing key information. By integrating a colour code system engineers will be able to instantly identify when the equipment was last examined by the external examiner and

therefore that the equipment should or should not be used.

The process requires all users to conduct a series of basic before use checks. Once they are content that the item is serviceable and has the correct coloured cable tie and/or metal tag they are then asked to sign for the equipment. The process demonstrates Lynch’s duty of care under the LOLER regulations where lifting accessories are used by supporting staff and contractors. Seen in the photos are the Hemel service engineers receiving training from G&J Plant in basic before use checks.

The GRR is an annual event of which LYNCH provide an excavator with skilled operator to prepare the beach for the Eve Trackway system , providing a smooth surface for launching the 350 boats.

This operation can only be carried out “between tides” , consequently the skills of LYNCH operator is greatly appreciated by the GRR team, ensuring the beach is ideally prepared before “overtaken by the tide” in order to lay the temporary roadway.
