Digging started on the first shaft for Thames Tideway
As the Thames Tideway project starts to pick up pace across all three joint ventures, the central section won by Ferrovial / Laing O’Rourke (Worth £600-900M) has set up site on Kirtling Street, Batersea where two tunnel boring machines will be lowered into shafts and tunnel simultaneously east and west towards the other respective joint ventures. This 5 year project managed by a consortium of investors have set up a company, Bazellegette Ltd who awarded the three joint venture sections and manage the construction. Ultimately Bazellegette will lease the finished tunnel to Thames Water. Meanwhile, at Kirlting Street the Laing O’Rourke JV have awarded a sub contract package to a Spanish
company, Geocisa to excavate the main shaft where the tunnel boring machines will launch. The package is well underway and here at Lynch we have a number of machines and operators currently working for
Geocisa. The machines include telehandlers, excavators, dumpers and a tipper lorry hauling the material between the site and the muck compound. The use of a tipper is necessary as there is a public road between the areas. Geocisa have mobilised and brought over some large plant and equipment from Spain to assist with the excavation vertically including a huge vertical shaft drilling machine. Geocisa’s package will run for around 8 months and onwards should the JV award further works. We will be working for them for the duration supplying equipment and inducted operators. I visited yesterday with Keval and spoke with the foreman James Jefferies who is very pleased with our services and operators, the works are on time and going very well. Going above and beyond our core fleet we have also supplied Ferrovial / Laing O’Rourke a dust suppression unit and we actively seek further ways in which to collaborate with the client.

Lynch proud to sponsor Barnet Elizabethans Rugby Football Club under 15’s
Lynch Plant Hire have invested in the local community this season by sponsoring BERFC U15’s rugby squad. The squad of 25 players train on a Wednesday evening in all weathers and play there matches on a Sunday morning. Liam and Merrill Lynch came to see the players in action in their second league match and to show their support. Liam Lynch commented to the coaching staff on how impressed he was by the players attitude and commitment throughout the game.
Health & Safety
It is expected to be one of the coldest winters on record so all staff need to be aware of the risks and dangers with the current change of season. Key Points
Always for outside works in very bad weather, postpone if at all possible until conditions improve. Always be aware of slippery and uneven surfces. Always be aware of the risks to your health and safety and the preventative measures in place and how to recognise the early signs of cold stress.
Always use the appropriate personal protective clothing for cold environments central to any control strategy.
Always wear several layers – this will trap an insulating layer of air, employees can add or remove layers as conditions change.
Always in cases of extreme weather, employees can also wear extra layers of protection e.g. thermal under garments.
Always choose wool or synthetics such as polypropylene for wearing next to skin so that sweat is “wicked” away.
Always be aware of the wind chill effect, which means that a cold windy day will affect employees more than on a calm day (if the air temperature is 10̊ C and the wind speed is 20mph the effective temperature drops to 0̊ C). (A temperature of around -1̊ C drops to around -9̊ C with a wind speed of 10mph). Always use waterproofs in wet weather and wind resistant fabrics to protect against wind chill – have a change of clothing available.
Always wear suitable footwear – and/or ice grip safety boots – to reduce the risk of slipping.
Always choose hats/hoods that work with other safety equipment that does not compromise your hearing or vision.
Always wear gloves with enough insulation to protect against frostbite but thin enough that you can feel what you are doing if using controls or tools. Never wear gloves that are too thick as this can also make your wrists and hands work too hard trying to hold on to objects causing repetitive strain disorder. ASK your supervisor/manager if in doubt

Recognition & Rewards
Andrew Sellman was awarded bonus for gaining work on a project in Croydon, This resulted in 8 loads of muck and 2 loads of rubbish being cleared by our Haulage Team. For the past two years Operator Danny Burbelea has been working for Lynch on the very demanding Bicester project. Working under Garry Cross, Danny demonstrated a ‘can do’ attitude and total commitment to the cause (he didn’t miss a day’s work in the entire 2 year period of the job) which was instrumental in helping Lynch deliver such a successful project.
The IT team work tirelessly keeping the systems working in the background and doing whatever needs doing; whatever time of the day. Andy Vincent, Farid Lalji and Nitesh Murji work collaboratively to keep the IT function of Lynch flowing smoothly. The teams’ ‘Can-Do’ attitude was brought to the attention of the directors, and as recognition the three of them were rewarded with a fun-filled evening go-carting at Rye House Racetrack in Hoddesdon.
Kairen took an enquiry recently from the Managing Director of Conroy's Group. He was upset with another suppliers performance and is now replacing all of their machines with Lynch Plant Machines. Kairen passed the lead on and after meeting the MD on site we have arranged the replacement of the other equipment. Well done Kairen, great time of the year to convert an enquiry like this!
If you want to show your appreciation to an individual or a whole team, speak to one of the directors and maybe your story could be told here in the next issue.
A Warm Welcome to our New Starters!

Cree Joseph Haulage Before joining Lynch, I worked as a finance and operations Administrator for Marks and Spencer. Although it was a different administrator role than what I was used to, I believed that the move into the Lynch would be a good career choice, and learning something new would benefit me in the long run. Although I’ve only been here a few weeks, I’ve started to pick up on how things work in the haulage department and believe I’ll get to grips with things in no time.
