A

number of fatalities and injuries continue to occur where workers are trapped or knocked down by mobile vehicles. The problem exists in a broad spectrum of industries; surface and underground, and is most acute with fork-lift trucks, quarry haulage vehicles and free- steered vehicles underground. Over all industries, vehicles account for 25% of fatal accidents, rising to 60% in quarrying. Incident investigating committees within the United Kingdom and other countries have pointed out the difficulties drivers face in visually checking the periphery of the vehicle. These problems are caused by narrow fields of vision, obstructions caused by loads, arduous physical conditions and poor illumination away from the forward axis of vehicles. Extensive efforts have been made to improve sight lines of vehicles, beyond the modification of vehicles to improve ergonomics and the fitment of cameras, there is a need to provide a warning where the driver has failed to notice a worker in the vehicle’s proximity. Proximity Warning Systems (PWS) are an audible and visual warning system designed to reduce the risk of vehicle personnel collisions and can be used anywhere the proximity of people and vehicles working together is of concern. When considering detection systems they must respond both to situations where the machine is approaching the worker at speed, and where the machine is about to start and the worker is already in close proximity to the machine. The principal difficulty to be considered is what form of proximity detection would function in a variety of environments, in close proximity to the machine and other metallic infrastructure. Quarry and mine environments are harsh, and therefore to offer high reliability, low false alarm rate and preferably failsafe provisions, or, as a minimum, an effective self-test provision. Ideally, in addition, an engineered system would be retrofittable, low cost and intrinsically safe for use in underground working sites. Any requirement to equip workers with a safety device dictated that this should be compact, rugged, low cost, ostensibly orientation-independent and resistant to removal from the person under normal circumstances. Such devices should also present negligible hazard in terms of affecting pacemakers or from exposure to any associated electromagnetic radiation, particularly if the device is transmitting continuously and worn throughout a working shift of up to 12 hours per day. Devices and their interrogation electronics would need to have a very low risk of initiation of electro-explosive devices (detonators) and should not cause electromagnetic interference with remote control systems. Direct detection of intrinsic body or workwear attributes, whilst offering simplicity, is unlikely to lead to a proximity detection system of adequate detection sensitivity or integrity. However given the rapid advancement of personnel detection security technologies it should be considered appropriate to review advances in this field. All the current technology has an important place in the use of construction equipment today, but I can’t help thinking we need more of the common sense scenarios like the current thumbs up safety campaigns around the industry, technology can sometimes breed complacency as the operator believe they have every angle covered. I am a great believer in if I cant see you don’t presume I know you are there just because there may be a camera or a sensor on board. Embrace the innovation and technology but never let it cloud your judgment on how safe you are around construction equipment……. Stay safe guys

Caterpillar offers object detection systems for all brands of mobile surface mining equipment

Caterpillar announces availability of Cat® MineStar™ Detect Object Detection systems for additional Cat machines and virtually all brands of mobile surface mining equipment. Previously unsupported Cat machines as well as other brands of machines can now be equipped with the cameras, radars and in-cab displays that deliver increased site awareness to mobile equipment operators. Object Detection kits are available with 1 to 4 cameras and as many as 8 radars for applications ranging from small auxiliary equipment to ultra class mining trucks. Functionality remains the same as the proven Object Detection system equipping Cat mining trucks from the factory and available as a factory option on several Cat wheel loaders and wheel dozers. The expanded line of retrofit kits enables enhancing safety and standardizing mixed fleets for the benefit of operators and maintenance technicians. Object De-

tection is wholly contained on the machine and does not require the installation or operation of any off-board infrastructure. The system is fully supported by Cat dealers. Object Detection works Detect Object Detection is designed to work during machine startup and when a machine is traveling at low speeds. The system employs radar capabilities to automatically detect hazards such as other equipment or vehicles within critical zones around the machine—in front, at the rear and each side. The system also presents specific camera views to show the operator where potential hazards are detected. A proximity bar on the in-cab display flashes yellow or red, depending on the distance of the detected object. Waste Not Want Not – Manx recycling business choose Hyundai

Tel’s is a family owned and run recycling waste disposal transfer station, based in Union Mills on the Isle of Mann. Managing director Terry Murtagh heads up the team alongside other family members, including his son Terry Junior and nephew, who is the company’s machine operator, Robert ‘Wolfie’ Murtagh. The company run a fleet of four Hyundai’s which work in the recycling yard, these include a HL740-9A loading shovel, a 22-tonne R220LC-9A fitted with a Daemo rotating selector grab, a 16-tonne R160LC-9 with a high cab and the latest purchase, an 8-tonne R80CR-9A fitted with a small Daemo selector grab. All the machines and attachments were purchased from Manchester based Hyundai dealer, HES Enterprises. Tel’s transfer station is where Manx collection vehicles drop off material so that it can be sorted. The company handle a wide variety of materials which includes wood, metal, stone, soil, plastics and cardboard. Once sorted the recycled goods get shipped across the UK and as far afield as India and China. These conditions are not for faint-hearted machinery and handling 10’s of thousands tonnes of waste per year – means they have got to be tough and reliable! Terry Murtagh said, “We bought our first Hyundai in 2013 from Andrew Shaw at HES, who I have known for many years, I bought machinery from his father when we were a muck shifting and demolition company more than 20-years

ago. HES supplied us with the 16-tonne R160 and fitted it with a static cab extension which is 1.5 metres high.” Terry added, “We really liked the machine and it was excellent value for money. It did exactly what it says on the tin – I was made up with it. We went on to buy a loading shovel the following year and then the R220 and most recently the R80. They all perform very well and can handle the 8.5-hour shift with ease! I recommended Hyundai to another contractor and they purchased two minis’ they are equally pleased with their performance.” Robert ‘Wolfie’ Murtagh is one of the company’s machine operators whose wolf logo forms part of the fleets livery! Wolfie operates all of the Hyundai machines but his main

mount is the R220LC-9A he said, “All the Hyundai’s are good machines – I can’t fault them. They are also operator friendly and a comfortable machine to drive, which is important when working long shifts. The rearview camera is also good from a safety point of view and the power and fuel economy are excellent. The loading shovel is really powerful too.” “We are delighted with the service we get from HES,” added Terry. “If we have an issue we call Andrew and he gets it sorted straight away. I would not consider moving away from Hyundai or HES.” So HES Enterprises and Hyundai get the thumbs up from Tel’s! Terry also reported that he will be investing in another Hyundai machine next year.

Sirius Group drives down fuel consumption with Volvo ADT’s The multi-discipline Sirius Group has announced an investment of more than £1.6 million in new plant and equipment this April, to meet demand from a growing number of projects across the UK. Additions to the firm’s 50-strong fleet include five Volvo crawler excavators and three A25G articulated dump trucks

Sirius has been a Volvo customer for some time, operating a range of the firms excavators and compaction machines. The three A25Gs are the company’s first Volvo ADTs however, as Sirius looks to improve fuel consumption and cut fleet emissions. “It is our first move into Volvo dump trucks, recognising that Volvo is the premier brand in the ADT market,” said Pat Kane, Group Director at Sirius. “The overall deal was very attractive and we’ve found that Volvo is ahead on fuel efficiency. The latest E series excavators also offer big fuel savings over the D series.” “The A25G is a very versatile machine and it is the right size for our job sites,” added Operations and Plant Manager Stuart Kirk. All of the Volvo machines have been supplied with Customer Service Agreements and Volvo’s Uptime Services proactive monitoring system. This allows the company to monitor fuel consumption, idling time and working mode operation,

to maximise productivity and minimise downtime and fuel use. As well as the three trucks, Sirius is taking an EC220E excavator, two EC250Es, an EC300E and its first EC380E, at 38 tonnes operating weight the company’s heaviest earthmover to date. Sirius is also set to install Trimble machine control systems on a selection of the excavators for the first time, having proven the benefits of 3D machine control on its sites. “We already use machine control on all of the dozers on our fleet and we’re always looking as a business to be at the forefront of what is available, in terms of machine technology and engineering,” said Mr Kane. With a turnover in 2015 of more than £31m, the Sirius Group is enjoying growth in many areas of operation. The company has more than 35 active projects across the UK, in brownfield remediation, demolition, soil stabilisation, geotechnical improvement, earthworks and site infra-

structure construction works. Sirius is also increasingly active as a developer in its own right, following a construct, own and operate model for medium scale wind turbine and large groundmounted solar PV developments. “2015 was our most successful year ever as a Group and with our recent contract awards we are well placed to build on this success, expand our services and deliver controlled growth for the year ahead,” said Mr Kane. “Our latest plant investment is a key part of our planning and strategy to help us achieve this.” The new Volvo dump trucks and excavators will be used exclusively on Sirius Group sites, joining a rapidly expanding fleet of cutting-edge equipment. With a policy of only investing in the highest quality, lowest emission equipment, Sirius will take delivery of the equipment over the coming months

As you might be aware UK Plant Operators have been collecting money for 2 fellow plant operators who recently lost their lives in a tragic road traffic collision in the Wilshire area whilst on their daily commute into work, both time served well respected plant operators working for M O’ Briens and L Lynch Plant Hire. With such a devastating incident to hit the plant community it was suggested we have a whip round for the families in a bid to help cover some costs at this tragic time, we set up a just giving page and started collecting, we had a massive response of donations and messages of condolences from operators from all over the UK, We would like to say a massive thank you to all of you who donated and sent in messages, we can safely say we smashed the initial target and raised a massive £7,825 which has now been split and sent on to the families. Just goes to show the power of the little plant community we have going here, and that in a time of need we can all pull together and do a little bit of good. Well done to you all.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Hawk Plant Investigate Hybrid Power Hawk Plant Hire is one of the largest independent plant hire companies in the UK with over 40 years experience supplying equipment.

With a comprehensive fleet of over 2000 items including excavators, articulated dump trucks, dozers, compaction equipment, loading shovels, backhoe loaders, bowsers, mini excavators and dumpers, they have the equipment to satisfy numerous industries. However, in today’s competitive marketplace, simply offering a broad range of products isn’t necessarily a differentiator, so Hawk focus on being able to offer their customers the most technologically advanced and reliable equipment from the leading manufacturers. And it was this business ethos, which prompted an enquiry about Komatsu’s range of Hybrid excavators. One specific aspect of Hawk’s enquiry focused on how the Hybrid machines would compare to the conventional machines currently in use on the numerous quarrying sites Hawk are contracted to. After discussing their requirements with Ross Smith, Marubeni-Komatsu’s Technology Products Manager, it was agreed that the best test of the new machine would be a week-long trial. “When our customers are considering a new type of machine for their fleet, giving them one to demo for a week provides the opportunity for them to really get to grips with the machine and explore its innovations and benefits” explained Ross. “In the case of Komatsu’s Hybrid excavators, its primarily about the fuel savings which can be had, although the amount of fuel saving varys depending on what the machine is used for

10

UK Plant Operators - Issue 04

– another reason why the machine demo is invaluable.” Mike Brazendale, Operations Manager Hawk Crushing picks up the story. “We already had a Komatsu PC360 in use at the Welsh Slate quarry site in Bethesda, North Wales and were interested to see how the hybrid equivalent would compare, both in terms of fuel usage and productivity. I talked to Ross about it and he agreed a week-long demo would be worthwhile, especially as the machine would be primarily used for loading material into the crushers and this type of work played to the strengths of the hybrid system.” So it was that Marubeni-Komatsu delivered their demo HB365LC-3 hybrid excavator to Welsh Slate and with Peter Barrett, Marubeni’s expert machine demonstrator on site to provide a machine walk-around and answer any questions, the excavator was quickly put to use in the quarry. Speaking with machine operator Arwel Griffith on that first day, first impressions were very positive. “I wondered if the Hybrid machine would be powerful enough and might struggle, but in operation it was actually very good indeed and did everything the regular machine would do with ease” commented Arwel. “I could tell straight away that it was noticeably quieter than the normal machine and it also seemed much smoother in its operation. It was fast to slew round but very precise - I liked that. In many ways it felt like operating a much lighter class of machine. The cab was as comfortable as ever - maybe

even more so because of the smoothness. Every now and then I’d have a quick check on the digital display to see how it was doing - it definitely used much less fuel,” he concluded. “At the end of the week’s trial we had a rough idea what the fuel saving looked like,” explained Mike. “We were estimating on using around 60 litres less fuel each day, which represents a massive saving over the course of a year.” These estimations were well and truly backed up by the Komatsu Komtrax report seen below. “By identifying one of Hawk’s own PC360LC-10 excavators - itself an efficient machine - we could draw a direct comparison against the Hybrid HB365LC3 where both machines were undertaking almost identical tasks,” explained Ross Smith, Marubeni-Komatsu’s Technology Products Manager. “The results are staggering! Based on an actual work rate of 87.3%, the Hybrid machine saved a massive 7.9 litres per hour. Assuming an 8 hour working day and a conservative 200 working days per year, that equates to 12,640 litres per year. At current prices, that’s an annual saving of over £6000! On top of that, CO2 emissions would be reduced by a staggering 33 Tonnes per year” continued Ross. “This test has really proven just how efficient the Komatsu Hybrid system can be under the right circumstances. For machines that are primarily used to load, slew, unload and slew back with very little traveling, the hybrid system operates at its peak as hybrid regeneration occurs during slewing deceleration.” Based on these findings, it’s been impossible for Hawk to deny the benefits of Komatsu’s Hybrid excavators and, have ordered three HB365s and a total of ten HB215 Hybrid excavators. These fuel saving excavators will be put to use on Hawk’s many contracted sites as well as forming an essential part of their hire fleet – an investment that’s especially important for Hawk customers looking to meet increasingly stringent environmental targets.

Magnificent seven JCBs for highways hire firm

A Somerset-based construction firm has ordered a further three new JCB 3CX Compact models after the outstanding performance of its first four models. Connor Construction (Southwest) Ltd, which specialises in the hire of plant and labour to the UK and global highways industry, initially ordered four of the brand new JCB backhoe loaders from dealer Holt JCB in Summer 2016. The company was so impressed by the performance of the new 3CX Compact models, that is has now added a further three to its fleet. Connor Construction (Southwest) Ltd’s Director and Founder, Ian Webb said: “We selected JCB because in our mind they truly are the only machine for the job when it comes to road maintenance work. In particular, the new 3CX Compact appealed because of the quality of the backhoe operation, an impressive turning circle and versatility of the machine. They perform far better than any competitive equipment we have used to date. “These latest models are the best we have driven. The turning circle is even tighter and the inclusion of excavator controls is excellent – our experienced drivers are finding them really easy to use. We genuinely believe the JCB 3CX Compact is the only machine on the market suitable

for the demands of the highways industry.” The brand new JCB 3CX Compact is the perfect machine for road resurfacing and repair contractors, designed to work in the confines of congested urban construction projects. It is powered by a low emission Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB JCB Diesel by Kohler engine, delivering 74hp (55kW). This highly efficient engine meets both US and European emissions standards without the need for a costly diesel particulate filter (DPF) or any exhaust after-treatment or exhaust fluid. The engine drives through a three-speed hydrostatic transmission to all four wheels, for maximum traction in difficult site conditions. The hydrostatic transmission offers a 40km/h top speed for travel between sites. The transmission also features a creep mode, allowing the operator to run at high engine rpm to power high-flow attachments such as road planers, with maximum travel speeds of just 3.5km/h. An exceptional turning circle of 5.8m braked to the outside of the wheels (6.7m unbraked) makes the machine highly ma-

noeuvrable and easy to operate in tight urban site conditions and capable of turning within a single carriageway. HIGH-VIS ® HRC5 RIGGER GRIP CUT 5 GLOVES Fluid injection injuries can be extremely harmful with all cases requiring emergency surgery. JuvaPro have a new range of HI intensity gloves which covers every risk associated with Rigging, Oil and Gas Drilling, Extraction and Refining, Fracking, Tool Pushing, Mining, Demolition, and Heavy Construction

A typical example of how and when workers are at risk of receiving a fluid injection injury is through hydraulic hose failures but also there is also a huge risk from abrasives disks and hot works. The force of fluid forced through a pinhole break in a hydraulic hose can be in excess of 250 metres per second (600 ft/s). Fluid, released in a fine jet at this force will penetrate through protective clothing, including protective gloves. Hydraulic injection can be defined as the puncturing of the epidermis by a jet of a fluid under pressure. Hydraulic injection injury is the term used to describe an injury sustained by an individual following an injection of fluid, usually while operating or

18

inspecting pressurised hydraulic equipment. While reported instances of injury through hydraulic injection are comparatively uncommon in the UK, the risk of injury through hydraulic injection is common to all hydraulic equipment irrespective of the system volume and can occur at relatively low pressures. MAXIMISE GLOVE DURABILITY & REDUCE PPE COST Abrasion resistance ratings are often used to evaluate the durability of a glove – that is, how long a glove will last in the field, when used for a variety of tasks. This is a

key metric, because glove durability directly affects the overall cost of hand protection programs. The maths is simple and effective: a £40 pair of gloves that lasts 6 months is three times as cost effective as a £20 pair of gloves that lasts one month. This is a more complex issue than one might think. In today’s era of performance work gloves, safety professionals are under increasing pressure to provide high dexterity gloves to employees, but at a low cost that satisfies purchasing constraints. While there is a temptation to move downstream in price, the reality is that a glove designed to maximise durability might cost twice as much as what you are purchasing today, but could reduce your overall hand safety costs

A D V E R T O R I A L

T FOI R LY E P R O DCUOCVTE RP RSO

as possible. • After all these improvement, the HIGH-VIS has more competitiveness than any other safety gloves in the market.

by more than 50%. This glove could also protect and perform significantly better for your employee’s particular tasks. To evaluate durability, many professionals rely on abrasion resistance ratings. Several tests exist that evaluate abrasion resistance the most common test is outlined below: • EN 388-2003 is the European standard that has been adopted by many countries worldwide. Gloves are assigned a rating of 0-5 based on results from the ISO 12947-1 abrasion testing standard. This test utilises a Martindale abrasion machine, and the testing endpoint is when there is a hole in the palm fabric. The standard states that only fabrics that maintain complete palm, finger and thumb coverage are tested. If there are multiple fabrics, each one is tested separately and results added together. If a fabric only covers a portion of the palm it is removed and not included in test results. Thus, the weakest point defines the test results. • Most performance work gloves that are promoted as ‘high abrasion resistance’ have reinforcements in several locations – fingers, palm, saddle and thumb. This will result in higher abrasion resistance in the reinforced areas, but keep in mind that reinforcement layers typically have exposed edges, and edges often fail before the fabric fails. Reinforcement layers also have exposed stitching, which will most likely fail before the reinforcement fabric fails, especially if the stitching ‘rides high’ on the surface of the fabric. With the High-Vis gloves range the stitching is flush on the surface and includes a one-piece palm fabric significantly reducing the likelihood of fabric failures.

A D V E R T O R I A L

• Finger fourchettes (finger sidewalls) are not part of the standardised abrasion tests. Some gloves are constructed with low durability fourchette fabric, which will lead to early glove failure. The High-Vis range of gloves have patent-pending finger protection with 82% impact absorption that offers sidewall and complete fingertip protection. • Many early glove failures are due to seam and stitch failures. With the High-Vis range we use dual Kevlar thread for stitching ensuring maximum durability. • Our High-Vis gloves are produced to include a Teflon process making them water and oil resistant. • Opting to use our gloves will reduced hand safety cost per employee and increase employee safety at work. • Our gloves provide improved protection, comfort, dexterity and tactility to ensure maximum benefits to all employees assisting them in carrying out their work effectively, efficiently and crucially as safely

The injury’s which can be sustained are well documented and skin penetration can occur up to 100 mm away and at pressures as low as 100 psi. The injected fluid can lead to necrosis of the affected area, and compartment syndrome occurs, which always means surgery. Compartment syndrome, is caused when fluid under pressure, enters the hand causing nerve and tendon damage, which can lead to permanent damage. Blood poisoning and infection are almost certainly a side effect. Failure to act quickly may result in the need to amputate fingers and limbs. The risk of amputation significantly increases if the wound is not treated within a few hours. These gloves are perfect for Hydraulic field technicians, Mobile hose replacement technicians, Plant maintenance fitters and anyone in a workshop or site environment

THE NEW SDX2 GLOVES HAVE SOME GREAT NEW FEATURES: • New design on the finger tips with shorter rubber tube to give fingers maximum comfort and dexterity. • We are now using dual Kevlar thread stitching on palm for maximum durability and ensuring long lasting gloves. • The whole palm is covered in one piece of synthetic leather to increase the cut resistance level from level 1 to level 2 in EN388 standard. • Cuff puller - get your glove in the proper position faster (extended neoprene cuff). • Reflective tape on the wrist Cuff – snug fit, easy to remove, breathable • Gel padded palm gloves (SDXO2) are excellent for shock absorption and heat resistance. • SDXC5, SDXW and SDX2 gloves have PVC dots on the palm for supergrip. • HRC5 and HRIG gloves have a durable rope channel reinforcement that is 8 times more durable than normal synthetic leather.

Hidromek Backhoe Reviewed by the Operator Experienced 180 operator Liam Moore gives us the insight on the new Hidromek

Welcome to the new machinery reviews feature straight from the operator direct, after all we are the guys who have to sit in these machines for up to 14hrs a day 6 days a week, each edition will feature what we call an unbiased honest review of an item of plant machinery, what makes a good machine is not always fuel economy and emissions, sometimes it’s as simple as where the cup holders are situated and how good is the stereo, what’s the seat like to sit after a 12 hr shift, so we’ve compiled a list of question to ask each operators about each review we do. The Hidromek has not long been launched in the UK in 2016 at the Hillhead show. It’s worth noting that the Turkish manufacturer has a big market share in Europe and is now wanting to break into the UK. Bunton Plant Hire have taken a number of excavators in the 14- 30 ton range with great success along with a dealership for the north of the UK.

26

UK Plant Operators - Issue 04

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Looking at the machine at first glance it very much stands out due to the striking color scheme of Black and White. The machine looks like the old Volvo BL 71 which was in my operators view a brilliant machine during the early 00’s. The machine is slim line and tidy to look at along with all the features you would expect to see in the backhoe loader range. Clean, Sharp and crisp it’s easy on the eye and draws you into its design. ACCESS: Access in and around the machine is very good. You are able to carry out all of your prestart checks from ground level before entering the cab. The engine system is the same as JCB and when carrying out the checks you would be forgiven to think that it is a JCB with a paint job. Access around the engine and main parts is responsible considering standard model. The machine

has access panels on all sides of the excavator. Good solid steps on both sides of the cab, I would suggest that the lower step on each side is pulled in as it sticks out when travelling on the roads around London may cause issues with cyclist or public. CAB: The cab is full size and no reductions in size anywhere, the view to the front of the machine and 4 in 1 is very clear and 85% of the front is pure glass, making much better vison than in similar JCB models. For the larger operator the seat belt can become tight and you will struggle to get the seat into a comfortable resting position during long shifts. Other models of backhoe loaders have more storage space pockets built into the framework. Good pressure in the cab climate systems when fully open and running at full speed. The machine has a very simple layout and panel design. The air vents blow out smoothly to ensure the

OV OERR RSETVOI ERW Y O P E RCAT

whole cab remains the same temperature. It has great operator comforts including radio phone charging points and cup holders.

SERVICING & ENGINE: The machine has a tier 3B interim engine which currently meets the EU standards. The machine does not have any DPF or AD Blue solution so brownie points for that, we all know how much of a pain AD Blue can be and the management involved to maintain it. The machines itself seems very powerful, nice and smooth on the power delivery. VISIBILITY: The main exhaust in this model of machine is to the right hand side pillar of the cab, this improves the vison for front end operation and the forks. The glass panels facing forward to the cab go to the bottom, giving best view when using the 4 in 1. The forks are placed within the bucket, we have not used the forks on the trial but when travelling with buckets they clash with the running rail, over time this could stop the forks being able to be used. Good all-around view from the cab generally. Mirrors display the rear view well..

the left hand side, takes time to get use to the gap between them. The buttons are all very well labelled and clear to understand. When using the front end of the machine plenty of power when digging into a stock pile. The return to dig mode can speed up the front end operation but many of the operators liked to keep it within their own hands and control. The roll ball on the top of the joystick makes the 4 in 1 much more user friendly than the standard 3CX’s. The roller can be tapped when in travel mode, so this has to be watched carefully. The length of the bucket arms on the front, means loading the center of an eight wheeled lorry is very easy. When turning the seat into the rear the machine has plenty of power and smooth hydraulics. The slewing is very quick and you have to watch out when its being used. The backhoe has easy switch to move from breaker to extending the backhoe is easy..

I think that for the few comments that were not that good this is because we in the UK are always very quick to judge a book by its cover and if we have only driven a brand then we feel a very strong loyalty not to leave it. COMPARISON: Everyone remembers the old Volvo Backhoes for good or bad reasons and I can see many ideas that have been copied across from the machine and works very well with this model. The Perkins engine inside the machine has come across from JCB’s machine. This machine is a Cross Breed from other machines in the past. This could be a good thing where you take the very best ideas from other models and add them all together to give you super machine. I think many of the operators once they had sat in the seat were willing to give the machine a chance and work with it.

SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDBACK:

OVERALL OPINION:

The machine posts reached over 11,000 people and had over 70 comments. Most of the comments were very positive. The main comments were that people had not heard of the make and model of the machine and wanted to know more information about them. More operators went on to say they would like to have a closer look and this lead to a team of 22 operators seating and using the machine during the Saturday morning assessments.

The machine stands up to many on the market and the machines are of a very strong build, the obvious issues are the resale value is currently unknown in the UK. However the machine does what it says on the tin and should be considered by purchasers comparing other models. It was a very comfortable machine to operator and it stood up to others with power and usability.

OPERATION: The machine is very steady and grips the road when travelling. The 6 speed gear box really helps with road speed and travels through the gears quickly when going up and down hills. The machine grips the road and steering is smooth. The seat and steering wheel can be adjusted to fit or builds of operators. On taking the machine on the road, we noticed the brake pedal is spread far over to

WHY IS QR AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR YOUR BUSINESS? With a simple snap of a smartphone, that unassuming graphic sends valuable information instantly to staff and customers, which for some businesses can mean the difference between a sale or a walk-away, but can also mean staff are not scratching their heads when it comes to getting to the information they need. The number of calls you can get because customers are looking for information and Certification with regards to the product you are offing can be greatly reduced and leaving the customer content that you have solved their problem efficiently. What is this magic you ask? Its common name is a "QR code," and it is essentially a two-dimensional bar code much like the bar codes that have become so ubiquitous in the retail world. Each QR code (QR stands for quick response) is composed of tiny shapes that can be read both horizontally and vertically. The turbo-charged design means that when activated, this code can implement complex actions, such as opening a web page, downloading a video or sending a text message. It's a way of providing instant information, integrating print and multimedia capabilities, capturing data on the spot and otherwise engaging your customer through the use of today's new mobile technology. This is the age of the smart phone, more and more of your customers are used to the help yourself out style of customer care, they don’t want to spend hours on the phone trying to resolve an issue they just want the solution. In construction the mislaid certificate or permit to work can mean hours of down time until the supplier or health and safety department can reissue. This type of solution solves this in an instant and the operation can quickly continue.

No Substitute for Experience With Feather Diesel Services Founded in 1954 Feather Diesel Services (FDS) continue to offer quality pump and injector services to the UK aftermarket. Covering all sectors of the market from car, van, truck, bus and off-highway quality remains associated with FDS as we found out recently when visiting their Yorkshire based facility in Elland. With a rise in Diesel vehicles and in the number of “specialists” in the field it is nice to see a company who can genuinely demonstrate where the words quality and specialist have meaning. Greeting you in their reception are training certificates for the Technicians working on Bosch, Delphi, Denso and Siemens VDO product. As you enter the clean-room environment of the Diesel workshop this is where pumps and injectors are diagnosed, cleaned and assembled. As Director Jeff Morley explained “quality for FDS is repeatability, as demonstrated

by BS EN ISO systems 9001, 14001 Environment and 18001 Health and Safety, all managed from within the business. This is what our OE customer demand. Quality is also the high-level build specification we work to; for pumps this is 100% replacement of not just worn components but external valves that have known vehicle issues, for injectors it is everything from tiny pins, through to cap nuts, tensions screws and of course OE nozzles.” Once assembled in their clean-room environment it is on to testing on OE approved test benches, regularly serviced and calibrated and run on high-grade calibration fuel. For FDS it’s the right way or not at all, right parts, right test equipment and ready for the shelf. Not only can FDS offer a repair and service exchange option for Diesel pumps and injectors they also have an 8 bay Workshop for vehicle services as well. For off-highway

vehicles it might be impractical to bring in your excavator but you’ll certainly be running service vans and trucks to haul your kit around. FDS have over 30 years’ experience of running their 860 BHP chassis dynamometers and can power test and diagnose your truck should it have a problem. In recent years they have also turned their hand to accurate re-mapping of vehicles using the Dyno as a base point for accurate before and after figures. With a complete aftermarket solution and technical help from Garage and Workshop staff Feather Diesel Services can genuinely claim to be a specialist in their field and as their moto suggests “there is no substitute for experience”, 63 years and counting…. Some websites still selling CPCS question and answers

Its been brought to the attention of authorities that Romanian websites are still selling answers to CPCS tests according to the CITB fraud investigation team. The Romanian websites is undermining the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) which covers thousands of machinery operators across the industry. The scheme is relied on by contractors to prove that operators are qualified to operate plant machinery such as excavators, dump trucks and most commonly the forklift truck. This combined with recent reports of fake cards being on offer in the UK for teams of foreign workers is slowly but surely reducing confidence in the CPCS card scheme for us every day operators. The tests are taken as part of construction’s plant operator skills card scheme in order to prove the competency of workers, despite the CITB spending nine months trying to shut them down the website is still live. A website started-up early this year based in Romania selling the right answers to the theory part of the tests for less that than £10. Scheme owners the CITB have shut down three versions of the site but another has now sprung-up. Ian Sidney, Fraud Investigator at the CITB, commented saying: “Despite continuing efforts, it’s proving tricky to put a stop to these illegal websites – but we won’t be deterred. “Three websites have already been shut down as a result of the CITB Fraud Squad’s efforts, but a fourth has been opened under a different domain name. “We are working with our solicitors and looking at other options to have those responsible cease and desist. “The process is lengthy but we are determined to stop fraudsters from bringing the industry into disrepute and putting lives at risk.”

Engcon safety locking system for quick fit buckets gets unique certification Engcon’s QSC locking system, a clever innovation that standardizes the locking operation of excavator buckets, has just completed an extensive certification programme and is now approved by the SP Technical Research Institute, equivalent to the German certification body TÜV, and others. QSC was developed by Engcon Groupowned company Microprop. The system standardizes the locking of the excavator bucket or other tool, independent of the excavator model or type of quick release. Previously, the locking system depended on the make of excavator and quick release, increasing the risk of handling errors. Certification of the Engcon QSC locking system has been carried out in close collaboration with the SP Technical Research Institute in Sweden. ”SP certification of the Engcon QSC demonstrates the importance of having people within your company who are genuinely interested in the development of safety-critical control systems,” says Johan Hedberg, head of the Automation Group in SP Electronics. The SP certificate awarded to the Engcon QSC safety locking system consists of Performance Level (PL) certification to the safety standard EN ISO 13849-1: 2016 and EC approval, At the time of writing, QSC is the only locking system with this significant third-party approval. ”We are very proud of this unique certi-

fication,” says Roberth Jonsson, Business Development & Product Manager Microprop. ”It feels great that a company, which began in a small town in Sweden, can grow

to create unique innovations and demonstrate outstanding results throughout Europe. This certification proves that, once again, we are good at what we do.”

L Lynch Thumbs up for Safety getting the message across Get the Thumbs Up to stay safe. A thumbs up sign is all it takes to improve safety on site. This simple hand signal makes it easy for site workers and operators to communicate effectively around plant. Recent HSE statistics show that, on average, approximately 7 workers die each year as a result of accidents involving vehicles or mobile plant on construction sites. A further 93 are seriously injured. Those accidents are avoidable, and achieving a substantial reduction in accident figures requires a behavioral change on sites. Lynch have been running their Thumbs Up campaign which is a safety initiative that aims to create more positive habits on site Thumbs Up is designed to take safety discussions out of conference rooms and compounds and make a demonstrable difference to the way site workers and plant operators communicate. The idea behind the campaign is simple. When you give a thumbs up sign to the plant operator, you’re asking permission to enter his work zone. You’re respecting the fact that there’s

34

a high-risk item that affects whether you get home safely. You’re showing colleagues you don’t take safety around plant for granted. Giving the plant operator a thumbs up takes no effort but can have lifesaving consequences for those on site. Rob Lynch Explains “You’re working on site and you are standing in the working area of a 15 ton excavator. The operator can’t see you and the plant is in operation. How do you feel? It’s not a trick question. It’s an extremely important question I’ve asked 700 construction site workers in recent months, and the answer’s pretty much remained the same: ‘Not good.’ one of the main reasons for the stats is that site workers don’t have their mind on the moment. For instance, they’re rushing to sort a delivery or are busy on their mobile phone (which is another major industry-wide problem).” “Another reason, which is often overlooked, is that the working area isn’t universally recognised by people as a high risk area. The working area is anywhere that’s in

close proximity to a machine. Stand in this area and you immediately put yourself in danger of being injured or killed, regardless of whether you’re standing in it for two seconds or ten minutes. The risk gets much higher if you’re in very close proximity to the machine or in the blind spot. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Our Thumbs Up safety campaign is aimed at empowering people to rethink their behaviour around working plant Thumbs Up is aimed at making a demonstrable difference to the way site workers and plant operators communicate.” Rob continues “We’re committed to improving plant safety on all UK construction sites As part of our Thumbs Up campaign, we carry out practical on-site safety sessions for all site personnel. In fact, one of our major contractors has already seen a visible change in site behaviour since taking part in the training. For more information about our Thumbs Up training sessions and how you can make your sites safer places to work contact Lynch Plant via their website.

Safely lighting the way with FHOSS Have you ever found yourself out at night on a job and unsure if you are visible to on coming site traffic? Have you ever felt uncertain whether you’re fellow plant operators are able to see you? Particularly when there is no ambient light available?

UK Plant Operators have met up with FHOSS Technology a company that is revolutionising the high visibility safety wear market and has developed a wide range of clothing which greatly enhances a plant operator visibility in all light and weather conditions. The range of innovative safety products integrate powered light electroluminescence, which is combined with a prismatic reflective tape with illuminated core. This is then applied to a range of high-vis garments that meets all required certifications

36

UK Plant Operators - Issue 04

and H&S standards for all UK rail and construction sites. Specifically, the FHOSS FI harness which sit over existing clothing meets the FR EN 469 and the electric arc F2621 STANDARD – Making it an ideal garment for plant operators and site workers to wear in total darkness and low light conditions. We went to Lynch Plant Hire rail hub site in central London armed with a couple of kits we set about testing this product in a real working environment.

SETUP: We found it a very easy product to set up, all you have to do is put the clothing on in the usual way and insert a small battery pack in to the rear of the trousers and the side of the flash jacket and switch on. CLOTHING QUALITY: The quality of the clothing itself is very good and almost a direct replica of the usual PulseRail garments that are common place on rail sites across the UK.

COVER STORY DURATION OF BATTERY From a full charge we found the battery very powerful and even after a full 12hr night shift there were no signs of the light fading, a battery pack will last officially 48hrs of constant use, once the light faded just a simple battery change will solve the problem. Its very easy to change as well. A simple plug and play. Distance of Visibility We found it very hard on the site we were on to find total darkness, but in the place we did test we could see our colleagues from up to 150m away and in the total darkness we could see them very very clearly indeed. Overall opinion We love this product and the many different uses for it, it was very easy to use and set up, the changing of the battery was straight forward and simple for any operator, a battery would last a good duration, in addition the back up support from FHOSS is second to none, this company are willing to adapt the garment in any way to suit your needs, a good supply of batteries come with the garments and are easily charged in

stations with 240v plugs 110v and also USB cab chargers. This is a great product and should be standard issue to all night workers including emergency services, construction and rail workers alike and should be on all sites very soon. Adrew Kimitri - CEO of FHOSS Clothing international, comments: Safety sits at the forefront of UK construction sites agenda. While traditional PPE works well with the presence of ambient light, it is of no use in total darkness or in bad weather conditions. FHOSS represents a big step forward in the PPE markets as a whole, as it means that site workers can be seen at all times and in all conditions, By introducing FHOSS to the PPE arena , we pledge to help bring a change in culture for the way in which the uk construction and civils companies protect their staff. We believe strongly that our technology has the capability to save lives on building sites, highways and rail infrastructure projects. Inspired by the Greek saying, where there

is light, there is life, we are committed to delivering a high end range of safety products for a variety of industry sectors, knowing that the industry is using technology that is over 50 years old, as the day glow brothers invented reflective tape back in 1964, this same technology is being used today, we would not find ourselves using any other product that is 50 years old technology, FHOSS is here to disrupt the market place by coming up with a new solution to keep our global work force safe at night. Finalist in three national awards in 2014 & 2015, it has been a great year for Fhoss as we move forward towards our goal of making our powered safety wear a common place on UK construction sites and British roads. The full range of products can be found on the FHOSS website together with some great video clips showing the product in action. For more www.fhoss.com

So Where is she now? After a brief visit back to the factory for full system check and fitting of the new fork attachments and new Hill Tefra QUICK HITCH. It was presented to long serving plant operator John Skeffington, John has been an employee of lynch plant hire for a staggering 22 years, based in the London area John has been operating all types of machines for Lynch, but john’s weapon of choice in this time has always been the stable backhoe loader sometimes JCB but mainly the CAT 432, 444, machines. John was very happy to receive the keys for this machine and here he is operating the machine in central London working for a company called Furgrow LTD, a local ground engineering company. Although it looks like John is just digging up a random field this is far from the case, he is actually digging 4.5m holes for filtration tests as part of the ground survey for the upcoming HS2 project.

John talks about his new machine, “I’m very happy and proud to be the operator of this machine especially as its done so much good already in its short life, well done to the guys on completing the challenge. You would never know its done all those miles, the CATS are a lovely machine inside and out, its nice after all my hard work over the years to be rewarded with such a nice ma-

chine” only an operator will know what I mean, I get looks of envy everywhere I go, people even taking pictures while I’m in the shop getting a newspaper in the mornings. Peri Faye is the name on the side which is actually named after one of the children who attend SNAP Cannock soft play centre for children.

To the new guys By Dave Hi guys, I’ve been operating plant for around 25 years. I first jumped on A5350 dumptruck around 1990 for a local contractor and never looked back. I spent 4 years on a dumptruck jumping on to excavators when I could to get the experience. I really do enjoy my job and consider it a career. The industry has changed so much since I became a lever monkey, back then machines were pretty basic, one of the first I got to grips with was a Cat 315 not an A, B, C just a plain 315, things have changed a lot nowadays, every machine needs a laptop if anything goes wrong. Its fair to say I use social media a lot and I see many newcomers to the game who have spent good money on plant tickets with the expectation that they’re going to be on £20+ per hour from day one and this is simply not the case. It takes years to become a good operator and even with 25+ years of experience that I have I am still learning every day. For the past few months I’ve been working in a quarry but there are situations where rocks will move and fall which could easily catch me out. It is worrying to listen to people that consider themselves the best plant operator ever and cannot be told anything by anyone around them, to me these

are the most dangerous people on site. Why are people allowed to get a machine ticket with just a few days or maybe a week or so training with absolutely next to no knowledge of the industry or what a machine does and how it should move on site, never mind how to dig deep sewers or the correct lifting procedures for technical lifts. So, okay if they've gone down the route of CPCS they will be on a red card so the employer will be able to make an educated guess that they’re a newish operator and will have little experience, they may not put them straight in at the deep end but we all know that things change on site and we are often asked to help out lift/move/push/pull/shift stuff during the day. If a new operator had spent time as a ground worker or banksman they would have much more confidence and a better idea of what they and the machine should be doing. I suppose this is why they struggle to find full time employment and they then use recruitment agencies which can give agencies a headache for a whole load of reasons, but its a seat filled and hours in the log book for a new operator. I would like to tell any new operator that besides driving a machine there are a few basics to master first and they are simple

enough at the start of the day: walk the machine and check it over looking for any leaks or new damage, jump up and check the oil and water levels, if they are low top them up, grease the machine every day, don't use the excuse that there’s no point in greasing the pins and bushes because they were f****d when it came off the low loader, keep the windows and cab clean at all times, you spend 10 hours a day in that machine why would you want to sit in s**t, just like you wouldn't want to s**t where you eat. These few basic things need to be carried out every day and it kills me to know that when I take a few days for a holiday and someone jumps in my seat that I’m going to be coming back to a s**thole. The machine Is not dieseled up, not greased, a scratched back end, dirty cab, dirty windows and with the famous comment "it was like that when I got it!" Rant over! John Deere firsts for apprentice training John Deere’s first female and forestry technicians have been registered in the latest intake for the company’s award winning apprenticeship scheme, managed by training provider ProVQ, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

A total of 34 apprentices have signed up to begin their first year of training in the work-based Ag Tech, Parts Tech and Turf Tech advanced apprenticeship programmes, including Zoe Parker of dealer Ben Burgess Coates and Matthew McPherson of John Deere Forestry in Carlisle. The apprentices, their families and sponsoring dealers attended an induction day at John Deere’s Langar headquarters and were given a tour of the branch and a ride & drive session with the latest Gator utility vehicles. They also visited the new John Deere Apprentice Training Centre at nearby Radcliffe-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. This is the British agriculture and turf industry’s first and only purpose-built apprentice training facility, designed specifically and solely for John Deere dealer apprentices. In addition the dealers took part in an employer’s workshop, which provided an overview of developments to the scheme for 2017 and what will be required in terms of apprentice mentoring, support and career opportunities. This is in line with plans for the new Government led apprenticeship

42

UK Plant Operators - Issue 04

framework that has recently been announced, which aims to attract 3 million apprentice starts by 2020. John Deere’s apprenticeship scheme was the first land-based agricultural and turf machinery programme to deliver training in the workplace, at the sponsoring dealership, with assessment and guidance from ProVQ’s team of expert assessors. Additional block release training takes place at the new Apprentice Training Centre. The three-year Ag and Turf Tech apprenticeships lead to IMI Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Landbased Engineering. Each year group trains at the centre for eight weeks a year in four blocks of two weeks, with some days spent at Langar when working with larger machines such as combines and selfpropelled forage harvesters. The two-year Parts Tech apprenticeship, leading to a Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Competence, is mostly work-based at the sponsoring dealer, with four weeks of training taking place at Langar. Graduating apprentices can then complete three free courses to gain the John

Deere Diploma and start their adult training at the John Deere University (JDU), using the knowledge and skills gained from their initial one-, two- or three-year apprenticeship. After additional training and experience, they can ultimately go on to achieve the highest possible LTA4 Master Technician accreditation. Ag Tech was the first such scheme to be introduced in the UK and won a National Training Award at the end of 1997, the only one ever made to an agricultural machinery apprenticeship programme. Since the first programme started in 1992, more than 600 apprentices have graduated through all the training programmes and been employed in the company’s nationwide dealer network.

Forward Tipping Dumper – Plant Safety

The industry have had a number of major accidents in the past few years with forward tipping dumpers. Some of the biggest players within the industry now look to dumpers up to 6 tons only or if they require bigger than 6 they hire small ADT’s. What’s the best practices to date that we all know to help us out on sites? ONE – SAFETY BEHAVIOUR Operatives to keep clear of the working areas of the machines and the haul roads. This has been very successful on larger open sites. This is the best way to keep the amount of accidents, Near miss and loss by keeping them away from each other. The next best practice is to have dumpers only up to the six ton range. This increases the field of vision from the operators driving seat. This still leaves an area directly in front of the skip that is not possible to see. We have seen an increase in the amount of customers that will not use 9 ton dumpers and will now use 12 ton ADT’s as another mode of transport. TWO – TECHNOLOGY Looking at technology you have two choices the first is forward facing cameras on the dumper, these look at the blind spots and covers the field of vision. The main issue with these units is that the cameras

need to be cleaned by the operator on a very regular basis due to the location mounted on the machine. The second problem is they are easily knocked when the dumper is being loaded or travelling across the site. The second technology is VCAS systems. These pick up and objects within the working area of the machine and transmit an audio warning alarm. The biggest problem with these systems is that they are going off all the time and the operator “Switches off“ to the warnings that are issued and you find that operator pays very little attention to them after a few hours of operation. I have seen another type of system which was based on the excavator proximity systems, when the operatives carry the targets on the hard hats. If the dumper comes within range of the targets, it sends out a warning in the cab / operators seating area. This again has its own set of issues of how far away to you set the system further more does it encourage the operators back into the working area of the machine??? In my view the best way moving forward to keep the plant away from the operatives all together removing this risk. On other sites the Dumpers always have a banksman with radio systems in place and the operator does not move the machine without the approval of the Banksman. We have seen this very successful in the rail industry with

the crane controllers. THREE – FUTURE I don’t think at the moment we have any fully complete technology to suit the requirements of this construction equipment. I could only suggest we look at other best working practices and safety cultures driven both from the top down and the bottom up. I have worked in the oil industry and they use the LPS system. You can ask me for information in relation to this system. We can only work with the tools that we have been given and who knows what the future holds. I would not suggest that we change the full safety culture of our industry and follow the oil giants but maybe pick out the best picks and blend them into the current system. One of the most successful systems is the LPO tool. Loss Prevention Observation. The main success of this scheme is operatives from different trades looking at each other by reviewing the works and picking upon key comments and points. In the 4 years I worked in the Oil Industry, huge learning was achieved and ensured zero accidents or incidents. If you have a safety point or comment on this subject, then we would love to hear from you now. Get in touch on our website page www.nfpeo.com, I hope you all having a wonderful New Year.

The Executive Hire Show 2017 Kicks Off to a Great Start! The 11th Executive Hire Show (8th & 9th February 2017) exhibitor ‘Kick off’ meeting took place earlier this week (11th October) at the event’s established home at the Ricoh Arena Coventry – in the heart of the Midlands

Show Director Robert Aplin ‘kicked off’ proceedings to a large crowd of the 2017 Show exhibitors. He used his opening address to announce his retirement from the event after 10-years at the helm and introduced the Show’s new Event Director, Craig Donovan. The new Executive Hire Show owners, the Hemming Group Ltd, were also introduced to the delegates and the company’s group MD, Graham Bond was present to welcome the EHS exhibitors. Mr Aplin said, “Having achieved the fantastic milestone of Celebrating 10 Shows earlier this year – an achievement I am immensely proud of - I have decided that the time is now right for me to have some more exciting adventures before it is too late! “The time is right to hand over the reins to Craig Donovan and the rest of the EHS and EHN team - Emma Sandy, Alan Guthrie, and Mandy Rees - who are all eager to develop the businesses further. To help guide and support them, I am confident that I have identified an ideal financial and commercial partner in Hemming

Group.” Hemming is a privately run exhibition and publishing company, established nearly 125 years ago by the family that still owns the business today. Mr Aplin added, “Having worked with Hemming for two months now, it is obvious that it shares many of the values and ideals that we possess in running and developing successful operations. Hemming and Brintex manages a range of complementary publications and exhibitions several of which are also hosted here at the Ricoh Arena - and brings a great wealth of experience to our industry.” Craig Donovan, who has been the company’s Group Commercial Manager since 2012 will take over Robert Aplin’s role with the support of the rest of the EHS team. Mr Donovan said, “The last fourand-a-half years as Rob’s right-hand man have been tremendous. I have enjoyed being an integral part of the team, passionately driving the business forward and together making a difference every day.” “I am really going to miss working with

Rob. We, the EHS team, could never replace him, nor do we want to. He has successfully figure-headed the Show for 10-years, and after Rob’s coaching and guidance over our journey together, I am looking forward to do the same for at least the next 10-years!” It was then down to business and Mr Donovan addressed the exhibitors with the very latest news about the 2017 Executive Hire Show where there are many new and exciting initiatives – EHS may only be a two-day event but its reach and its influence continue throughout the hire industry throughout the year. The 2017 show has an impressive 152 exhibitors in the Main Hall and the Atrium to date, which means that these areas of the event are now already 98% sold out – by Christmas the EHS team is anticipating that these areas will be full! Of these exhibitors 24 so far are brand new to the event. Potential exhibitors that have yet to book need not despair as a new area has been cre-

ated – the ‘Hire Show Hall’ – where a direct link has been created from the Main Hall into the Lower Halls. The EHS team has confirmed that the construction of this new link is almost complete and they are now taking stand bookings for the new area. “Bookings for the ‘Hire Show Hall’ are off to a good start with several new exhibitors already signed up.” said Mr Donovan. “Eagle eyed exhibitors within the main areas of the Show, wanting larger stands, have seen the potential in this new area and have already moved their stands to exhibit in this new space.” The 2017 exhibitor list is looking very impressive – with the majority of the key players, in the hire industry taking stands. These include A & Y Equipment, Altrad Belle, Atlas Copco, Avant Tecno, Bomag, BTE Plant Sales, Doosan, Firefly Solar Generators, GenQuip, Greenmech, Hire Supply Company, Husqvarna, Ifor Williams, Knott-Avonride, Kubota, Leica, Mace Industries, Makita, Manitou, MHM Plant, Niftylift, Obart Pumps, Ridge Tools, Shindaiwa, Sumner, Thwaites, Topcon, Wilkinson Star, Yokota and Zenith. The EHS would also like to extend a warm welcome to the brand new exhibitors that have committed to the 2017 event so far – these include: Astrak UK, AV Industrial Products, Camberwell Plant Hire, Briggs & Stratton, Castle Brooke Tools, CCL, CEMO, Datatag, Carrymate, EC Hopkins, North West Tools, FLEX, GGR Group, Harford Attachments, HTS, Identipro, Imex tools, Klingspor, Leach Lewis Rubber Tracks, Multiquip, National Flooring Equipment, Niftylift, Nightsearcher, Paragon Protection Systems, Russon Ac-

cess, RVT Group, Stanley Handling, Tammet Systems, Trime (UK) & Van-Line. The 2016 event attracted 1,851 relevant hire industry visitors. The EHS team has already begun its 2017 National Visitor Campaign, working for the fourth year in partnership with Hire Supply Co, utilising the expertise of Steve McKenzie, who will be travelling the country visiting Hire Depots to mobilise and excite hirers to attend the 11th annual event. EHS will also be working with Altrad Belle for the 2nd year running. The Altrad Belle team will also be visiting hire depots country wide to drum up visitor support for the Show. From mid-November, check out where the team have visited on the Show diary of the EHS website. Back by popular demand is the Innovation Trail, first launched in 2013, as innovation continues to be an integral part of the Show. Al-Ko Kober, a manufacturer of chassis systems has already confirmed that the company will be sponsoring the Trail once again. The Innovation Trail concept is simple. Ahead of the Show, all exhibitors are given the opportunity to submit details of an innovative product that they will be highlighting at the Show. Finalists will be selected in advance by a third party judging panel including independent hirers, and the EHS will highlight these products with a floor tile outside their stands so visitors can actively follow the Trail on their visit. All Finalists are then mystery shopped by the Judging panel and a third, second and first place are selected and announced the Show. For the Show, there were thirty-three el-

igible entries. Products were assessed for addressing key industry issues like Health & Safety and their worthiness of inclusion in any hire fleet, as well as their innovative qualities. After the mystery shop at the last Show, the winning product of the Innovation trail was Morris Site Machinery’s PHT140. It’s free to apply, so Exhibitors who wish to for the Innovation trail at the next Show can do so soon, submitting their product details with an application form. Invites and instructions will be distributed next month, so get innovating. Another initiative from the EHS team are the ‘Executive Hire Regional Road Shows’ which have been well received, now in their 3rd-year, local hire companies are invited to come along and see just what the EHS has to offer and can take advantage of special deals from participating suppliers, available only at these events. Details of these events can be found on the EHS website. Mr Donovan said, “Our Regional Road Shows are smaller taster events where we continue to bring hirers together at smaller local events. In June this year we hosted Brexitthemed Road Shows in the North West, West and Wales. Incidentally, both hirers and audience supported the decision to leave the EU.” The 2017 EHS website is where visitors and exhibitors will find the latest news about the Show which will be updated on a regular basis between now and the February event. Visit www.executivehireshow.co.uk. Put the 8th and 9th February 2017 in your diary now – it’s one Show in the 2017 exhibition calendar you can’t afford to miss!

Top 10 Health & Safety Risks In Construction The construction industry accident fatality rate stands at more than double that of the all sector average – more minor accidents are almost incalculably more. Put simply, construction sites are a health and safety nightmare – almost every conceivable hazard exists within this constantly changing working environment. But the hazards associated with construction sites are well known – most responsible employers are aware of their duty of care to employees, visitors, and those that may be affected by their activities, and will manage the site effectively, implementing appropriate accident prevention measures. Risk assessments are carried out by management to identify hazards and risks posed. Listed below are just a few of the main hazards that are encountered on a typical construction site: WORKING AT HEIGHT The construction of buildings – or indeed, demolition works – frequently requires tradesmen to work at height. Fatalities and injuries involving height relating factors account for many accidents each year. The risks associated with working at a height are often increased by added access and mobility restrictions. Training, including safety awareness training is essential for employees required to work at height. MOBILE PLANT MOVEMENTS A construction site is an ever changing environment; hazards are inherent to this industry and only increase as a construction

project progress, as things rise and expand. Construction sites can get quite hectic what with the shear volume of constantly moving vehicles and trades people – overhead lifting equipment shifting heavy loads, supply vehicles, dumper trucks everywhere, manoeuvring around a usually uneven terrain. SLIPS, TRIPS, & FALLS When you consider the diverse range of activities going on at a construction site at any one time it seems hardly surprising slips, trips, and falls happen on an almost daily basis. Construction sites are a mish mash of

holes in the ground, buildings at various stages of completion, scaffolding, stored materials and equipment: you really do need eyes in the back of your head at times. NOISE Noise is a major hazard within the construction industry. Repetitive, excessive noise causes long term hearing problems and can be a dangerous distraction, the cause of accidents. Beware, using simple ear plugs does not necessarily offer total protection against hearing damage – employers are required to carry out and document a comprehensive noise risk assessment – and issue appropriate PPE. HAND ARM VIBRATION Hand arm vibration syndrome, or ‘blue finger’ as it is commonly referred to, is a painful and debilitating industrial disease of the blood vessels, nerves and joints, triggered by prolonged use of vibratory power tools and ground working equipment. This industrial disease is frequently cited in compensation claim cases opened by exconstruction workers who worked for years with little or no protection, using inappropriate and poorly maintained equipment.

H E A LT H & S A F E T Y MATERIAL & MANUAL HANDLING

ASBESTOS

ELECTRICITY

Materials and equipment is being constantly lifted and moved around on a construction site, whether manually or by the use of lifting equipment. Different trades will involve greater demands, but all may involve some degree of risk. Where employee’s duties involve manual handling, then adequate training must be carried out. Where lifting equipment is used, then adequate training must also be carried out, but may involve some form of test, to confirm competency. Records of training must be maintained for verification.

Today there is a new generation of construction workers, including; joiners, electricians and plumbers for whom asbestos is seen as a historical problem, something from the past that’s now long gone…but that is a mistake. There are an estimated 500,000 public buildings in the UK that contain harmful asbestos materials: often hidden away, forgotten, and by and large, harmless – in its undisturbed state. Workers need to know where it is and what to do if they come across suspicious materials that might contain asbestos.

On average, three construction industry workers are electrocuted each year during refurbishment work on commercial and domestic buildings. People working near overhead power lines and cables are also at risk. There are also a growing number of electrocutions involving workers who are not qualified electricians but who are carrying electrical work, such as plumbers and joiners and decorators.

COLLAPSE

AIRBORNE FIBRES & MATERIALS

Not exactly a hazard, more a risk – an accident in waiting. Every year excavations and trenches collapse, bury and seriously injure people working in them – precautions need to be planned before the work starts. The risk of an unintended collapse is generally more associated with demolition works or when a partially completed building or scaffolding collapses, but still accounts for a percentage of fatalities each year.

Construction sites are a throng of activity and kick up a lot of dust…an often invisible, fine, toxic mixture of hazardous materials and fibres that can damage the lungs, leading to diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary, asthma and silicosis. Simply issuing PPE is not enough…employers have a duty to ensure protective equipment is actually used. Failure to do so could render an employee to disciplinary action and in hot water with the health and safety executive.
