he UK Construction Industry’s Exhibition season has defiantly arrived with Plantworx on the 6th to 8th June at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground Leicestershire then moving on to Rail Live on the 21st to 22nd July overlapping the Demo Expo at the Herts county ground from the 22nd June to 24th June.

All three exhibitions showcase the best in the UK construction supply chain with many manufacturers showcasing new products. We have new interest from the global market this year at Plantworx with Indian global giant FeRRUM launching a new bucket range in the UK. Highways England - Construction Plant Community is supporting its construction plant supply chain partners at Plantworx Construction Machinery exhibition and will be focusing on promoting careers in the construction sector. The organisation’s stand will consist of static and working equipment with the opportunity for new plant operators to take part in skills tests on a range of machinery. The stand will be supported by three of the well-established plant hire companies: Flannery, Lynch and Hawk Plant, which will be providing equipment and will also be actively recruiting apprentices, trainees and operators to work on projects throughout the UK. Hyundai Heavy Industries supports rebuilding work in the wake of Italian earthquake Hyundai Heavy Industries, in collaboration with the construction machinery manufacturers Italian dealer Hitex, supplied two machines, for four months free of charge, to help with the clearing and reconstruction in the areas affected by the earthquake in central Italy.

It was Wednesday August 24, 2016, when a violent earthquake shook central Italy and claimed 297 lives. The epicentre was located near Accumoli, 75 km southeast of Perugia and 45 km north of L'Aquila. The tremors began at around 3.30am on Wednesday morning, followed by a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake. Since then several earthquakes have followed, resulting in even more casualties and damage. Following the earthquake Hyundai Heavy Industries Europe, with the backing of local Hyundai dealer Hitex, took the decision to offer assistance with the clean-up and reconstruction of the affected areas by offering two machines to the Il Corpo Nazionale dei Vigile del Fuoco – a R60CR-9A crawler excavator and a HL757-9A wheeled loader for four-months at no cost. The machines were delivered to the headquarters of the Fire Brigade of Cittareale (Rieti), a town of medieval origins dating back to 1261 AD on 27th October 2016. The town was home to a wealth of historic buildings which were almost completely destroyed or seriously damaged by the earthquake.

The City vowed not to give up and launched a vigorous reconstruction plan. On November 8th 2016 - the Mayor Francesco Nelli – officially opened a new earthquake resistant school - and there are many more ongoing initiatives to help the citizens of Cittareale to return to normality as soon as possible. The two machines supplied by Hyundai and Hitex have made a worthy contribution to this operation which will continue. Hyundai Heavy Industries managing director, Alain Worp said, “Hyundai and Hitex were honoured to be able to contribute to the clean-up and reconstruction of this Italian city by providing two machines. This earthquake has devastated a community – we are proud to have been able to help in a small way – and watch with great admiration as these people rebuild their lives and homes.” Background information on the two Hyundai machines. The HL757-9A wheel loader is one of six models in the Hyundai's -9 series of machines with operating weight between 9 and 33.5 tons, with bucket capacities of 1.8 to 6 m³. The HL757-9A has a weight capacity of 14,700 kg and a bucket capacity of 2.8 m³.

The HL757-9A is designed to allow the operator to adjust the engine power and the timing of the automatic transmission and clutch disengagement based on the application and preference. The engine benefits from three power modes - Power for heavy work - Standard for general work ans an Economy mode for light work. The gearbox also benefits from four modes - Manual, Auto-Light Mode for light loads and transporting over long distances) - Auto-Normal Mode for general cargo and moving light material and Auto-Mode Heavy for heavy loads and heavy material movement and extraction. The fully automatic transmission is equipped with self-diagnosis and low temperature protection – which is especially important for the machine working in areas such as Cittareale where winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing. The automatic transmission improves performance, reduces power loss and maximizes the strength of the machine. With the five-speed gearbox and the lock-up torque converter, operators can also benefit from a reduction of fuel consumption. Enhanced axles on this machine improve driving on rough terrain – which was an absolute must while working amongst the rubble caused by the earthquake. The Hyundai R60CR-9A compact excavator, like all machines in the A series, helps to maximize profitability by improving fuel economy and by delivering advanced maintenance functions and highly resistant components. The machine has been designed for maximum precision and offers the operator the very best in handling and maneuverability. The flow rate of the pump decreases the hydraulic flow, when the controls are not in use, to reduce fuel consumption. The fuel efficient, Yanmar 4TNV98 engine provides proven, reliable power. This engine is electronically controlled for

optimum fuel to air ratio and clean, efficient combustion and provides low noise, anti-restart features. All control devices are arranged for higher productivity and improved operator comfort. Efficient and ergonomic controls allow an operator to control the machine in any working environment. A safety lever on the left-side console is provided to prevent exiting the cabin while hydraulic controls are live. The advanced hydraulic system includes an arm flow summation system, boom holding system and a swing parking brake

for smooth and fine control. Other valuable features include a hydraulic damper in the travel pedal, and a hydraulically lubricated swing reducer with a leak-free grease chamber. The shift function of the main arm is designed to increase efficiency in residential and urban areas. The tail swing radius allows the operator to work within narrow spaces. Increased swing ensures higher performance for applications on the slopes. This machine is well suited to working within the earthquake zone.

As a Government Company with capital funding certainty over five years, our supply chain has the confidence to invest in the people to make them capable of delivering what is a huge amount of work." making their show debut. In terms of size and exhibitor numbers the 2017 show has exceeded the 2015 exhibition event and the Plantworx team is expecting the show to be a ‘sell out’ - making this event the hottest ticket in town and a spectacular action packed 3-days! JCB has sights set on new market JCB has its sights set on a new market after launching a range of branded prescription safety glasses with leading high street retailer Specsavers.

JCB already licences around 50 leading companies which sell millions of products from batteries, tools and toys bearing the JCB name each year. Now the company has teamed up with Specsavers Corporate Eyecare to launch the safety eye wear – with great success. Senior JCB Licensing Manager Paul Tudor, who is based at JCB’s World HQ, in Rocester, Staffordshire, said: “The reaction to the launch has been fantastic with thousands of pairs of the JCB safety glasses sold already. We worked very closely with Specsavers on the designs and we are delighted with the results.” A total of 20 JCB frames are being made available in men’s, women’s and unisex

designs under the licensing agreement between the two companies. They are available from Specsavers’ UK stores with metal and polycarbonate frames with a wide choice of lenses suitable for a range of industrial settings. They come complete with side shields bearing the famous JCB logo. By the end of the year all 1,700-plus Specsavers stores globally will offer the JCB range. Specsavers Corporate Eyecare Director of Strategic Alliances Jim Lythgow said: “We have subjected more than 440 pairs of prescription safety glasses to extremely rigorous tests. Land & Water’s Environmental Winning Streak Over the past few days the UK’s largest inland waterway and marine environmental engineers, Land & Water has scooped two major framework contracts.

Land & Water landed the multimillionpound Canal & River Trust National Dredging Contract, making them dredging suppliers to the Trust for the next 10 years. This substantial award came just days after won a place on all 4 lots of the Environment Agency’s South East Region minor works framework. Achieving these major wins represents a triumph for the waterway contactor and is a testament to their commitment to innovation, environmental consideration and collaborative advantage. The dredging tenders were supported by Land & Water’s overarching environmental strategy. A major and forward thinking part of this strategy includes the construction a series of improved wildlife habitats across the UK. These habitats will be formed by reusing dredged sediments and other soils to re-engineer a string of redundant waste sites, turning wasteland into beautiful and much needed wildlife havens. It is the vision of James Maclean CEO of Land & Water that these wildlife havens will eventually be stepping stone habitats throughout the UK’s waterway network. The sites will allow Land & Water to reclaim and reuse silt and other materials from dredging and associated infrastructure projects thus contributing to their commitment to work towards a less than 10% disposal policy. Steelwrist is broadening its portfolio of quick couplers and tiltrotators Swedish tiltrotator and work tool manufacturer Steelwrist continue to broaden its product portfolio. At the international product launch on April 26 in Sollentuna, Sweden, Steelwrist launched a number of new products. The tiltrotator program is increased with an X14 size tiltrotator for 10 to 14 ton excavators and backhoe loaders and a range of S30 couplers for mini excavators. Steelwrist has a tiltrotator program that covers excavators from 2 -33 ton in eight

different sizes. The X14 tiltrotator is aimed at the increasingly important 10-13 to segment where S50 size couplers can be used. Also the larger articulated back-hoes is the target segment for the new X14 tiltrotator. Additionally Steelwrist is adding a range of S30 couplers for mini-excavators to its product range. Deliveries of the new products will start in June 2017.

Gold star for JCB as machines take a bow in cult film

Image: 20th Century Fox A fleet of more than 20 JCB machines is playing a starring role in a cult film following the biggest product placement project in the company’s history. Skid steers loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers and JS excavators were supplied to 20th Century Fox for the making of the new Alien Covenant film which hits UK cinema screens on Friday. They star alongside Michael Fassbender and Katherine Waterston wrapped in stunning gold – the idea of British film director and producer Ridley Scott designed to give them a futuristic look. Apprentices build one-of-akind JCB Loadall

A JCB Loadall telescopic handler built entirely by the company’s 68 apprentices is going on show to celebrate national training opportunities for young people.

The stylish machine was unveiled today in the visitor centre at the JCB World HQ during National Apprenticeship Week. Learners from JCB sites across the country have played their part in building the iconic Loadall, a machine which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and which revolutionised the lifting and placing of loads on farms and construction sites when it was introduced. Over 200,000 Loadalls have been sold since its launch in 1977, but none as unique as this one, which will eventually be

auctioned off for charity. Co-ordinated by JCB Training, apprentices from the World HQ in Rocester, Staffs, and as far afield as JCB Transmissions in Wrexham and JCB Power Systems in Derbyshire all played their part. JCB Transmissions manufactured the axles and gearbox; JCB Power Systems manufactured and built the engine; the Hydraulics Business Unit (HBU) built the lift, extension, tilt and displacement rams; JCB Cab Systems in Rugeley supplied the cab and JCB Marketing came up with the colour scheme and promoted the initiative at various events. All parts were assembled at the JCB World HQ to build the Loadall Agri Pro machine. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, who himself completed an engineering apprenticeship before joining JCB in 1964, said: “As an engineer and former apprentice with manufacturing running through my blood, I'm delighted and very proud of what JCB's apprentices have achieved with this project. They have shown vividly that team work

delivers wonderful results and most of all highlighted what empowering young people on apprenticeships can deliver.” Chris Morris, of JCB Training, led the project and said it was a great way to promote the company’s commitment during the National Apprenticeship Week. He said: “Going on show in the main reception will also give potential new customers an insight into how well JCB apprentices work together. The project also highlights the work the JCB Academy does in providing excellent training to our apprentices, which gives them the skills and academic achievement to help them move their careers forward.” Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service said: “A remarkable amount of skill and dedication has gone into this project over the past six months and all the apprentices involved should feel immensely proud. They have shown what it is possible to achieve through an apprenticeship and it’s great that they have been able to take part in this project to help celebrate the 40th year of the Loadall Division. “Apprenticeships play a vital role in the economy and JCB are demonstrating their commitment to this by putting their apprentices in the spotlight with events like today. It’s a fantastic event to be holding during National Apprenticeship Week; a massive well done to everyone who has been involved.” Apprentices who took part in the project, from across JCB’s factories, all spoke of the development of skills and boost to confidence building the Loadall had given them. Dan Malbon, 21, of Cheadle, Staffordshire, who works in the Loadall Division, said: “The project has been an excellent way to showcase what apprentices can do. It has also given me the abilities and confidence to take on bigger and more difficult challenges within my career at JCB.”

Offering a 45.2-ton (41-tonne) rated payload capacity, the new Cat® 745 articulated truck features a world-class cab design, completely re-engineered from the insideout using global operator feedback to advance comfort and ease of operation. The new external “spinal” ROPS structure boasts bonded rear quarter glass that eliminates the structural pillar to give the operator a dramatic improvement in visibility from the cab. Upon cab entry, the new “wake up” feature initiates machine displays as soon as the door is opened, while the lighter/stronger cab door offers shut assist for improved sealing against dust infiltration. The quieter cab design lowers inside sound levels by 5 dB at the operator’s ear. New infrared glass reduces solar heating inside the cab, while left- and right-hand sliding windows increase ventilation and improve external communication with workers and the loading vehicle. More vents positioned above and behind the operator enables the new automatic climate control (HVAC) system to more efficiently heat and cool the cab. Innovative Machine Controls Inside the cab, a new combined transmission and hoist lever gives operators efficient single-lever control over truck speed and body hoisting functions to minimize operator effort and automate repetitive operations. At the flick of a switch, operators can choose between manual or fully automatic assisted hoisting control, which automatically applies the Waiting Brake, sets the transmission in neutral and hoists the body to maximum angle at high RPM. A new push-button lever control allows the operator to easily set the machine speed and select transmission hold/waiting brake. Directional gear shifting protection on the new 745 articulated truck now protects the powertrain by bringing the machine safely to a stop when transitioning from forward to reverse and vise-versa. Further improving operator safety, the machine incorporates the new Cat Detect with Stability Assist system. This system audibly and visibly warns the operator if tractor or trailer unit has reached an angle threshold where it is in risk of tipping over. The class leading fully Advanced Automatic Traction Control is improved by technology that will proactively apply the differential locks prior to any wheel spin. Terrain-based throttle smoothing prevents the new truck from surging when an operator is traveling over extremely rough terrain and is unable to keep steady pressure on the accelerator pedal. The new 745 truck’s touchscreen display with revised menus offer intuitive navigation through the screens for simple machine

control. The display enables the operator to monitor machine functions and personalize a variety of options. A new emergency stop brake switch next to the display offers a further level of operating safety in the unlikely event of incurring issues with both the main and secondary brake circuits. Steelwrist launch a new range of Powered Work Tools - Hydraulic compactors, Multi-grapples and Sorting-grapples Swedish tiltrotator and work tool manufacturer Steelwrist continue to broaden its product portfolio. At the international product launch on April 26 in Sollentuna, Sweden, Steelwrist launched a number of new products. Steelwrist powered work tools include screening buckets launched 2016 and now also compactors and stone/sorting- and multi-grapples. The demand for environmentally friendly recycling solutions and work site material handling is growing. Rising fuel costs and landfill fees make it expensive for builders to transport unscreened material out and to bring in fill and topsoil material as replacement. The screening bucket solves this problem and with the new range of hydraulic compactors the portfolio is expanded to make the compaction job more efficient than ever before. With a Steelwrist OQadaptor on top of the work tools the change-over process is done in seconds. The hydraulic compactors comes in four sizes covering excavators from 2 to 30 ton. Main features include off-center adaptor position for efficient reach, optimized compaction force-distribution, and pressure- and flow rate-control for overload protection.

Simultaneously two ranges of grapples are introduced to the market. The Multi grapple (MG-line) is a general purpose construction and log grapple. Application areas include heavy lifting, stone laying and timber handling. Wide opening, Hardox 500 materials, high clamping force and mechanical end stops safeguard a long lifespan. By choosing high grade steel we reduce the overall weight which in turn increase the lifting capacity and lower the fuel consumption of the excavator. Four sizes are available from the MG20 for 3-6 ton excavators to the MG55 for 18-26 ton excavators. The Stone and Sorting grapple (SG-line) will also be a complete product range with four sizes covering excavators from 6 to 32 ton. Lighthouse Construction industry Charity and Considerate Constructors scheme launch new initiative to support mental health agenda The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and the Considerate Constructors Scheme have launched a new initiative to help support the mental health agenda in the construction industry.

The Construction Industry Charity

Considerate Constructors Scheme registered sites, companies and suppliers can now provide their workforce with handy wallet-sized Construction Industry Helpline cards, as well as displaying posters to advertise the services. Even if you don’t have a CCS registered site you can still access obtain posters and cards. The Construction Industry Helpline provides a free 24x7 confidential employee assistance programme for all of the construction workforce and their families in the UK. From highway and railway construction to office buildings and homes, from steel fixer, plant operator and ground worker to architect and surveyor, the Helpline is there to deliver mental health and wellbeing, financial assistance, legal advice and support on education and training. The Helpline is operated by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity (also known as the Lighthouse Club) and is funded by the charitable generosity of the construction industry. With the crucial support of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, the Helpline has launched a new range of packs which are available to purchase. Each pack contains wallet sized Helpline cards for distribution to the workforce and A2 posters to promote the Helpline on site.

There are nine packs in total, which are suitable for sites, companies and suppliers of different contract values and annual turnover. By purchasing a pack, the site, company or supplier is also making a commitment to undertake a ‘Lighthouse Day’, which can be any event or any day in the calendar year that a company chooses to raise muchneeded funds for the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity Chief Executive Bill Hill said: “As well as delivering emergency financial aid to those in our industry suffering hardship, we have augmented our Helpline services to support callers suffering from anxiety, stress, addictive behaviours and depression in support of the recent research into the mental health of the industry. Every year there are around 40 fatalities on UK construction sites and more than 2,000 major injuries that leave workers incapacitated. There were more suicides in construction than in any other profession in the first half of this decade and almost half of reported occupational cancer cases relate to workers in this industry. It is now imperative that we put the Helpline Card in the hands of every construction worker in the industry, so they will always have a safety net to catch

them at their time of need. The Considerate Constructors Scheme has fully embraced this initiative right from the start and we cannot thank them enough for their enthusiastic support.” Considerate Constructors Scheme Chief Executive Edward Hardy said: “The Helpline provides invaluable support for workers and their families during times of difficulty and hardship and has already made a huge difference to the lives of many people. We are urging as many sites and businesses to purchase the packs and pledge to hold a “Lighthouse Day” to raise funds for the charity. There is no pressure to raise a target amount – just as much as you can on the day to make a difference.” The Scheme has been supporting the Construction Industry Helpline ever since it officially partnered with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity in 2014, when the Helpline was launched. To better understand some of the subject matter CITA will focus on please find a guide to some of the areas: BIM Building Information Modelling is a process that helps support and inform decision-making in the design, construction and management of a building or built asset. The Building Information Modelling (BIM) process, technologies and collaborative behaviors hold the key to unlock new more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle. Ultimately BIM Level 2 defines what, when and how information should be created, shared and managed. The Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BIM mandate has accelerated change in the industry leading to the adoption of new technologies and processes along with more collaborative working. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT MACHINE CONTROL The UK is slowly catching up with machine and the way it can greatly reduce costs on the site and reduce potential plant operative interaction and accidents.

Ensuring speed, performance, precision and productivity and Technology that allows faster digging and grading without loss of precision at higher speeds, dramatically increasing machine utilisation and productivity. Excavators can now take on even more fine grading jobs, allowing contractors to complete their work with fewer machines and helping them to finish their projects ahead of schedule and under budget. GEO SPATIAL The Geospatial Industry is witnessing its biggest ever change. In the digital world, a precise understanding of the physical is essential. It allows us to better understand, plan, predict, and deliver. The storage and transfer of imagery together with the development of associated digital software, maps, and data sets on socioeconomic and environmental phenomena, collectively called geographic information systems (GIS). Greater access and analysis of data provides insight that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t possible years ago, and can help solve some of the many challenges we find in the built environment. Advances in this area are spawning high-efficiency methods for construction and operations. These include: Remote Sensing: imagery and data collected from space or airborne camera and sensor platforms. Some commercial satellite image providers now offer images showing details of one-meter or smaller, making these images appropriate for monitoring humanitarian needs and human rights abuses. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): a suite of software tools for mapping and analyzing data which is georeferenced (assigned a specific location on the surface of the Earth, otherwise known as geospatial

data). GIS can be used to detect geographic patterns in other data, such as disease clusters resulting from toxins, sub-optimal water access, etc. Global Positioning System (GPS): a network of global Department of Defense satellites which can give precise coordinate locations to civilian and military users with proper receiving equipment. Internet Mapping Technologies: software programs like Google Earth and web features like Microsoft Virtual Earth are changing the way geospatial data is viewed and shared. The developments in user interface are also making such technologies available to a wider audience whereas traditional GIS has been reserved for specialists and those who invest time in learning complex software programs. Over the next few years, this will expand to take a wider and deeper place in the construction and operation of buildings and facilities. They will further unlock the opportunities for autonomous vehicles, the future of transport networks and will be pivotal against the backdrop of smart cities and the Internet of Things. SMART BUILDINGS The term Smart Building can be designed as the application of interconnected technologies that help make

buildings more intelligent and responsive, ultimately improving their performance. Truly smart buildings deliver better environmental, social and economic conditions for their users and the people around them. They reduce energy consumption, improve occupant productivity and wellbeing. They create built assets that are more efficient to operate and maintain and ultimately more pro table to manage. INDUSTRY 4.0 Industry 4.0 represents a new way of delivering a better, more efficient and ultimately profitable construction process. Clearing things up with Ardent tide The changes to Tax and employment laws has seen great debate within the Construction industry and especially all those self-employed operatives who work within it. We have seen recently some significant changes to employment and tax rules and the effects this has had on everyday operatives who have been used to working under CIS for some years now.

UK Plant Operators are receiving daily questions with regards to status and operatives are saying they feel slightly in the dark when it comes to how these changes will affect them. This debate on self-employment and the right to be self-employed is particularly relevant to the construction industry where traditionally the industry has needed flexibility to respond to the dramatic changes in the level of activity A Recent survey by the Nationwide Federation of Plant and Equipment Operators (NFPEO) and UK Plant Operators saw some 10,000 respondents with 83% of operatives wanting to remain self-employed for several reasons. At the last NFPEO meeting in Dartford a debate was had about the changes where a number of self-employed operatives were moved to employment contracts. The mood was one of despair as operators who previously enjoyed the flexibility selfemployment gave them aired their views.

Duncan Jones Operator for 25 years Said “Everyman has the right to be selfemployed – the country has been built on shopkeepers or self-employed SME’s.” “I want to set the rate I feel I am worth and what I believe the market is at the time, as a small business I expect to be able to choose the type of work I want to do and where I do it, I don’t expect to have a constant battle with an employer about what I will be doing tomorrow and by the way there is no work so please sweep the yard!!” If there is no work – fine I except that but I am free to find other work with whoever I want.” Dale O’Hara another Operator of over 20 years said “being self-employed doesn’t really put much more in your pocket, this is a myth really, you still should put some away for your time off and other thing like accounts and workwear, but the benefits are the flexibility it gives you” So with a few questions to hand UK Plant operators decided to attend a recently

held seminar at the Institute of Civil Engineers held by Ardent Tide and find some answers for our readers. Ardent Tide are industry leader in Compliance, Tax, Audit and Payroll for Construction Businesses. The event was well attended by companies throughout the various construction sectors. Dermot O’Grady from Ardent Tide moderated the event and explained the purpose of the event was to discuss the current workforce challenges facing construction companies. Matt Boddington of Chatergates discussed employment status and recent high profile cases around employment status like Uber, City Sprint & Pimlico Plumbers. Matt reported that recent media reports regarding Pimlico Plumbers did not mention the fact that the worker, Mr. Smith, actually lost his claim for employee status. The Employment Tribunal found that the operative, Mr. Smith, was a worker as they felt he had to provide his services

personally given that the contract did not allow Mr. Smith to provide a substitute. He is now able to pursue claims for disability discrimination, holiday pay and unlawful deductions from wages. Recent activity in the construction sector in West London exposed over 800 illegal workers. Some were found in high risk areas like Airports and previous sweeps have found abuse in Nuclear and sensitive infrastructure projects. Since 2015 there were about 7000 enforcement operations resulting in 2500 civil penalties against employers and collections of over ÂŁ12.5m in fines. Finally, Henry Hathaway from Silver Shemmings reminded us that Employers can be found vicariously liable when engaging illegal workers. If an illegal worker has an accident or other event resulting in an insurance claim while the insurer will pay out there are now cases where the insurer sued the construction company to recover those funds. So what did we learn from the event which we can pass on to the followers of UK Plant Operators? Along with a better understanding of the pitfalls companies face when engaging employees or sub-contractors, there are many benefits in using a reputable payroll company to ensure that things are done

compliantly. That the benefits seem clear of being a self-employed worker, with flexibility and freedom tends to be the main reason why more and more people tend to be moving towards self-employment. Typically, selfemployed tend to have the opportunity to earn more. Understanding what the basic rules which make you employed and selfemployed are important to know. Employment status is not a choice, it is a question of fact. Paying subcontractors any part of their payments without tax deduction Many people are unaware that you must tax everything when it comes to subcontractors, except expenses for qualifying materials. Unlike employees, subcontractors don’t qualify for expenses to be paid without a tax deduction, even for such things as reimbursement of fuel and hotel/B&B costs. Automatically assuming the deduction rate will be 20% All payments made to subcontractors are subject to the relevant rate of tax which is confirmed when you verify them with HMRC be it: 30% 20% or Gross. Assuming a Limited Company can automatically be paid Gross A sub-contractor who is registered as a Ltd company must have CIS deducted unless they have registered for and have been confirmed and verified by HMRC, to have ‘Gross status’. Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) Many construction companies engage workers on a self-employed basis: Cleaners, Estimators, Consultants, Quantity Surveyors etc. Knowing which work falls outside of CIS, isn’t always as easy as you think and getting it wrong will cost you the 20% you didn’t deduct! Incorrect apportionment of materials A common mistake is to accept the subcontractors charge for materials. As the onus is on the paying company, it is important to note that it is the actual cost of the materials to the subcontractor and not their charge-out for the materials that is important for CIS. What is Machine Control?

WHAT IS MACHINE CONTROL? ‘Machine Control involves the integration of survey positioning equipment onto earthmoving machines’ It can be fitted to just about any earthmoving machine, typically larger dozers & excavators, but it can also be fitted to graders, pavers, rollers, DROTT’s, etc… The survey positioning part of the equation breaks down into, 3D GPS, 3D total station or 2D laser and this is what is used to ‘guide’ the machine. 3D refers to a complex 3-dimensional model whereas 2D is a more basic level of grade. HOW DOES MACHINE CONTROL WORK? For 3D GPS systems, GPS receivers are mounted on the machine which in conjunction with a GPS base station tells the system its position accurately. The 3D

model is loaded onto the system so the machine knows where it needs to be to achieve the required design. The system combines these 2 sets of data so the operator can dig the difference. A 3D total station system works exactly the same as above. Except the GPS receivers and base station are replaced with a prism and a total station. For 2D systems, laser receivers are mounted on the machine and use the laser beam from an external rotating laser to indicate where the required level or grade is. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON BRANDS? The most common brands available from three leading survey equipment manufacturers are; Leica, Topcon & Trimble. With each manufacturer providing a full range of Machine Control Solutions.

Although each manufacturer provides solutions in different ways, each system will include the same basic components for each type of machine. For a typical 3D GPS dozer installation, there will be a cab mounted control box screen that provides the operator with real-time grade information and control as well as being the interface for loading data files. There will be a controller mounted elsewhere in/on the machine that processes the GPS & radio data. Then there will be 1 or 2 GPS receivers mounted externally, usually on the blade or counterweight that picks up the satellite signals. An excavator will have the same components as a dozer but will also have tilt sensors mounted on the body, boom, stick & dog bone which are used to calculate the position of the tip. A 2D system is a simpler system, usually

One last key component, which many people still overlook, is the actual survey equipment itself. This will usually either be a GPS base station, Robotic total station, or Dual grade laser. We must remember that although the hardware and software may look different – we have the apple/android situation. All of these systems are working to the same levels etc. on the model provided for the site although, each manufacturer provides added features on their systems which may provide an extra benefit to the customer.

Obviously not all sites are set up perfectly and the system is quite complex so if, an operator has a good working knowledge of the limitations of the components or of common faults, then if there are any issues they can be resolved quickly rather than having the machine stood down. WHAT IS USUALLY EXPECTED FROM THE ENGINEERS ON SITE? One of the most common misconceptions with Machine Control is that people believe that it will do the Engineering works for them automatically and therefore they can save money on employing an Engineer. The Engineer will still need to complete the usual site set up works but rather than spending time going around site banging pegs in the ground and putting up batters to guide the operator they can rely on the

system to guide the Operator and concentrate on more productive tasks. Simply put from an Engineers point of view the machine becomes the rover so rather than walking around site marking out the design the machine can track around levelling, grading or digging to the design automatically. This then allows the engineer to carry out “dip checks” to check the accuracy of the work against the design. WHERE CAN AN OPERATOR GET ADVICE ON USING THE SYSTEM? What is Thames Tideway? The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal River Thames from pollution. London's sewerage system is no longer fit for purpose and spills millions of tonnes of sewage into the tidal section of the river every year. Tideway is building the tunnel to tackle the problem of overflows from the capital's Victorian sewers for at least the next 100 years, and enable the UK to meet European environmental standards.

Tideway are upgrading London's sewerage system to cope with the demands of the city well into the 22nd century. After years of study, construction work for the new 25 kilometre interception, storage and transfer tunnel running up to 65 metres below the river, known as the Thames Tideway Tunnel, started in 2016. Starting in west London, the main tunnel generally follows the route of the River Thames to Limehouse, where it then continues north-east to Abbey Mills Pumping Station near Stratford. There it will be connected to the Lee Tunnel, which will transfer the sewage to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. Overflows of untreated sewage into the tidal River Thames add up to tens of millions of tonnes every year. This is unacceptable and the Thames Tideway Tunnel will clean up one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s iconic rivers. At 25 kilometres long, up to 65 metres deep, and more than seven metres in diameter, the Thames Tideway Tunnel will

be the biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the UK water industry. It will generally follow the route of the River Thames to enable it to connect to the combined sewer overflows (CSOs) that are located along the riverbanks, passing underneath all other infrastructure in London and through a variety of different ground conditions. Tideway has signed up a team of worldclass contractors to offer sustainable and cost-effective methods of construction. There will be three main 'drive sites' where tunnel boring machines are lowered in to the ground and driven below the river bed to construct the tunnel from the east, west and central locations. Innovative engineering in the design phase has already reduced the tunnel from the initial 32 kilometres proposed, down to 25 kilometres, and reduced the number of construction sites needed from 45 to 24. What is a tunnel boring machine? A tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavates a circular tunnel using a rotating

cutterhead, while simultaneously creating a tunnel wall using concrete segments. As it excavates it also transports material from behind the machine via a conveyor belt or pump, which is progressively extended as the machine. About the organisation Tideway is the organisation delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel, on behalf of its owners at Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd. Tideway employs more than 400 highly experienced professionals to deliver the 25 kilometre sewer tunnel needed to prevent an average 20 million tonnes each year of untreated sewage discharging into the tidal River Thames in London. Tideway is independent of Thames Water, and its revenues are determined via a separate licence for Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd, from Ofwat. Bill payments for the tunnel will be collected via Thames Water. Thames Water will continue to provide water and wastewater services to its customers as it does now. Project legacy The tunnel will not only improve the environment, ecology, public health, appearance and reputation of London, but it will also give a much-needed and immediate boost to the economy by offering thousands of skilled jobs and hundreds of apprenticeships.

Any well run business is constantly trying to find ways to save money and contractors in the heavy construction industry are no exception. With equipment costs in the millions, every dollar counts; the presence of a strong relationship with a construction equipment dealer can provide savings many times what might normally be seen in the difference of a purchase price. A strong relationship with a construction equipment dealer matters for the following reasons: Better Pricing - Simply put, a long-term relationship will lead to better pricing in construction equipment purchases. While the most important aspect to any equipment purchase is total cost of ownership, an establish relationship will enable a dealer to "sharpen its pencil" when it comes to dealing with contractors that have established a regular purchase history. An Understanding of the Contractor's Business - The nature of any relationship is the understanding that each party has about the other; the purchase of construction equipment operates in the same way. An equipment dealer familiar with a regular customer simply has a much better understanding of the customer's business versus another company without that knowledge. Using that history, the dealer-

ship is in a strong position to suggest equipment, recommend useful features and provide guidance to satisfy the contractor's need. Dependability - Having already established a relationship with a construction equipment supplier, a contractor has an established track record on which to rely. With multiple construction projects to manage, contractors are on tight deadlines and having a dependable vendor can mean the difference between a well-timed, profitable job and a reputation-damaging headache. Preferential Treatment - A strong relationship offers the contractor preferential treatment, which can take many forms, such as access to limited inventory, priority given to a service request and a faster response time, but there are many others. When a piece of critical construction equipment is down, a desperate contractor can rely on the relationships developed with equipment and parts vendors to save the day.

Business Intelligence - Equipment dealers interact with a number of construction contractors; a good relationship with an equipment dealer can provide information that wouldn't be available to a casual customer. Whether it's leads on upcoming projects, industry leading practices that the dealer's other customers use or simply rumors from "around the water cooler," relationships prove to be valuable. Purchasing construction equipment can be a costly endeavor, however the development of a long-term relationship between a construction equipment dealer and contractor can pay substantial dividends. While the benefits are many, a focus on the long-term is necessary. More trainees needed to work in booming construction industry Plant operators are backing a construction careers day in Cambridge next month designed to find the skills needed to support the region’s booming economy. The £1.5 billion A14 upgrade programme, along with major construction growth, has created a need for more workers in the industry, particularly in plant operations. Cambridge Regional College, which has launched new apprenticeships in plant operations and plant maintenance to help fill the skills gap, is working with large employers to support the growth in the region. The day, organised by major companies in partnership with the college, is backed by leading industry employers including Flannery Plant Hire and Lynch Plant Hire, and builds on the success of a similar day in January which attracted over 400 jobseekers. The hands-on event, with heavy plant on show, included major regional and national employers. Patrick Flannery, of Flannery Plant Hire, said apprentices could go a long way towards filling the skills gap in the industry. “In the East of England there is a big shortage of plant operators and we see apprenticeships as the way forward to fill the skills gap. It’s an excellent time to retrain through an apprenticeship or start your career as a plant operator,” he said. “Cambridge is a real hotspot for work and

there’s a big need for construction workers.” CRC’s director of employer engagement Paul Skitt said the college was working closely with businesses to fill the construction skills gap. “The June construction day will build on the success of a similar day in January, with well over 400 visitors attending and registering interest for specific apprenticeship jobs or courses,” he said. “We are engaging closely with businesses

UK plant operators at thames tideway project London Potentially a UK first, three plant training simulators running simultaneously across London. UK Plant Operators supplied three simulators across three regions simultaneously each day for a week. Thames Tideway project London were holding a safety awareness week across all regions of the massive sewer regeneration project currently taking over the city of London, this included toolbox talks, general heath related challenges and wellbeing courses as well as some fun sport team building activities. We were invited to take part with our state of the art plant training simulators, but not just one region, we were asked to cover all regions at the same time, with such a massive task ahead the UKPO team pulled out the stops to meet the deadline, after a few sleepless nights and some help from Simon Hogg of Tenstar simulation, we managed to get the plan in place and coordinate the setup of simulators to

complete the mammoth task ahead. With a massive team of FORS Registered couriers armed with simulators galore we headed for the Capital with the team including Dale, Wayne, Tim. All worked their socks off to deliver the plant machinery awareness for all staff on each project which involved groups of staff having a safety briefing on how to act around machinery, also including time on the simulators to try and understand the view that an operator gets and actually how hard it is to operate a machine in a tight environment such as the tunnel or shafts around the tunnel, this combined with a bit of fun on the loading a lorry while timed and ADT driving course, most of the employees walked away with more knowl-

edge about machinery and the most popular comment of the event was â&#x20AC;&#x153; I did not think it would be that hard to operate a machine, total respect to the operators who make it look easy. â&#x20AC;&#x153; We would like to give a massive thanks to Thames tideway and the staff who made this happen and were so welcoming to our team during the set up and planning of this event.

UK plant operators simulator training with topcon ie at CQMs show UK Plant Operators were very excited to be invited to take part in the CQMS plant and machinery show in Tullamore Ireland in April this year and what a great show it was too, with the sun shining and some really great stands from some of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s industry leading suppliers and manufacturers. We were in attendance on the TOPCON stand with our state of the art plant machinery training simulator to help in the demonstration of Topcon machine control systems for potential and existing customers, which we have attached to our simulator for machine control awareness courses we run for companies who are looking to introduce machine control to their sites all over the UK and Ireland, The show was held over 2 days and Topcon had one of the most attractive looking stands on the whole site it must be said, with plenty of their state of the art equipment on display along with catering

and seating areas for potential customers to discuss the products. The simulator went down a storm with over 320 individual challenges being run during the event, these ranged from the old classic of loading a truck while timed to the more technical challenges like uploading the dig files and changing attachments to

All you need to know about DEMOLITION EXPO 2017 June 22nd through to the 24th will see the third Demo Expo event hosted jointly by the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and the Institute of Demolition Engineers. Following on from the success of 2015â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event, the show has now gained an extra day on the Thursday and has moved to a new location, this year at the picturesque Herts Showground in Hertfordshire.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event has seen an increase in exhibitor enquiries with many large names in the demolition, recycling earthmoving industries already having signed up for the event. The first two days of the event will be aimed specifically at the business side of the industry with the NFDC and IDE hosting business meetings whilst Saturday will be a family oriented day with fun and games for children of all ages. Various demonstration areas will see attachment manufacturers able to show of the abilities of their products whether it will be processing concrete or cutting steel. Inmalo will again be present at the show displaying a wide range of attachments on static display and in the demonstration area. The Winchester based company will have examples from their very popular and highly effective dust suppression range of

Demolition attachments from the Mantovanibenne range and Montabert hydraulic hammer range will also be on display with the team available to offer their expert advice to visitors over the three days. Worsley Plant will also be back for the third time showing off their range of demolition attachments. The Dutch manufactured range of Rotar attachments will be at the show on the static and demonstration stands along with the new, Generation 2 Lehnhoff fully automatic hydraulic coupler. The Generation 2 Lehnhoff will be shown on a customer machine along with a static display model. Worsley will also have the Lehnhoff Lehmatic safety control system on display. Examples of the popular and productive Remu and MB crushing and screening buckets will also be present on the stand.

BPH Attachments will be displaying their range of Prodem demolition attachments including a new range of shears and wood waste rotating grabs. In the demonstration area, BPH will be displaying their ProQuick fully hydraulic hitch system. Capable of picking up standard attachments thanks to the cleverly designed valve blocks, the ProQuick cuts the cost of adapting attachments to suit specific hitch types. JCB Sales will be on hand over the three days to show visitors their range of heavy duty demolition and recycling equipment. Examples of their XD range of excavators will be on show along with the popular wheeled loader range in full material handling guise. Of particular interest will be the latest innovation of their compact skid steer range; the Teleskid. With more than a 60% increase in forward reach and 8% lift height increase over its nearest

competitor, the Teleskid will certainly expand the possibilities of this type of popular machine within the demolition industry. Komatsu will come to the show in force with an example of their award winning PC390HRD-11 high reach excavator. The show will also see a PC290LCD-11 in full demolition spec and a Hybrid PC365LC-3. The company also plans to show a WA3808 wheeled loader. Liebherr Great Britain will this year show an example of their fuel efficient range of X Power wheeled loaders. The Hydrostatic machine is claimed to be over 10% more efficient than the outgoing models. An example of a refurbished used machine will be on display to highlight the detail the Biggleswade based dealer goes to in giving used machines a new lease of life. An example of the 6 series demolition specified excavators will also be on display along with a specially decorated version of an LH40 wheeled material handler. For those interested in crushing and screening, the show ill not disappoint. Sandvik, Kleemann and Mccloskey will all be showing examples from their ranges.

Volvo Construction Equipment premier new live-demo event format for companies & operators

For the first time, Volvo Construction Equipment have invited operators and customers to test-drive their popular machines and trucks at two ground-breaking live-demo events in the UK Called ‘Live it. Dig it’, the events took place across two weekends in March 2017, firstly in Alloa, Scotland, followed by a repeat event in Birmingham. Explains David Munns, Sales Director of Volvo, “We wanted to give companies, customers and operators a unique way of experiencing the full range of machines we produce – from excavators to haulers and also Volvo trucks, and also showcase our largest excavator, the EC750E. It’s an opportunity for them to speak to the experts, share experiences and just have a great day out. Over 400 people attended across the four days – and what was unique was that most people stayed for the whole day for the opportunity of driving every machine they could.” The Live It. Dig it. campaign since the end of 2016, was invited to be part of the demonstrator team on the EC220E, saying, “Operators mentioned it was not always possible to get on machines at plant shows to check things like balance and sturdiness in various substrate conditions, and that it was helpful to get proper advice on attachments and buckets, as well as operating issues. We even had some hauler drivers try excavators, and vice versa.” Ag-Con was also represented at the event showcasing the Steelwrist tilt-rotator which was fitted to the EW60E, EW160E and EC140E excavators, proving popular with those new to the product wanting to give it a try, as well as seasoned users who enjoyed talking with like-minded people about the benefits of this increasingly popular equipment.

CQMS’17: The place to do business – ‘No track kickers’

CQMS’17 has been pronounced a major success by exhibitors and visitors alike. The show which took place at Molloy’s Quarry near Tullamore, Co. Offaly on 21st and 22nd April drew a significant proportion of Ireland’s construction and quarry industry on Friday’s Trade Day and huge crowds from the trade and the general public on the Saturday. Visitor numbers were up by over 3,500 on the figures from the 2015 to 7,809 over the two days with 1,668 trade visitors and 6,141 paying at the gate. 200 exhibitors were at the show, 80 more than at the 2015 event. Many exhibitors complemented the organization of the show saying it was a very well run, highly professional event with over Euro 90 million worth of equipment on show from the major plant dealers. Many of the visitors are likely to make plant purchases on the basis of what they saw and the contacts they made at the show. “CQMS rivals the best of its kind internationally. It was a resounding success. It is a must-attend event for everyone who has anything to do with quarrying and construction. There was serious interest shown by those attending with hardly a track-kicker amongst them.” - Michael McHale, managing director, McHale Plant Sales. “It’s a good show, we sold four machines. We are very happy with the quality and caliber of the visitors,”
