Love (and great deals) in the air at the Travis Exchange this Valentine’s Day

Army & Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — The Travis Exchange is helping military families share the love on Valentine’s Day with candy, gifts and flowers at the Exchange, Express stores and ShopMyExchange.com.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend nearly $26 billion on Valentine’s Day, with 2023 predicted to be one of the highest spending years on record. Shopping the Exchange for loved ones this Valentine’s Day can help alleviate those costs.

Military shoppers as of this past Monday can find fresh Designer’s Choice and Fantasy Farms flowers at participating Exchanges and Expresses. Rose bouquets can also be delivered directly to shoppers’ loved ones when ordered from ShopMyExchange.com.

Shoppers looking for that special gift for their special someone can visit the Valentine’s Day gift guide for a Valentine’s Day gift guide featuring jewelry, watches, fragrances, handbags, lingerie, gift baskets, candy and more. Additionally, shoppers using their Military Star card can save 10% on select jewelry, watches, fragrances, handbags and beauty products.

Shoppers at the Exchange and Express can pick from a variety of chocolate and candy sets. The Exchange also offers other Valentine’s Day-related essentials such as gifts, greeting cards and décor.

“Showing your love shouldn’t break the bank,” Travis Exchange General Manager Cathie Byrns said in a press release.

DYESS AIR FORCE

BASE,

Texas (AFNS) — As Maj. Lauren Olme, 77th Weapons Squadron assistant director of operations, fires up the engines of a B-1 Lancer on Dyess Air Force Base, she is living out her lifelong dream of being a pilot.

In addition to that dream, she achieved a new feat that will affect future generations of servicewomen: Flying while pregnant.

Olme garnered her passion for flying by watching her father fly as a pilot in the Air Force.

“My dad flew (F-15C Eagles), so I instantly fell in love with flying and the Air Force culture at a pretty young age,” Olme said. “There was never really a time that I officially decided I wanted to join the Air Force; it was just something I always wanted to do.”

Lauren met her husband, Maj. Mark Olme, 7th Operations Support Squadron bomb wing weapons officer, while attending the Air Force Academy. They became fast friends and started dating in November 2011, eventually getting married seven months after graduation.

“We were navigating being newlyweds while both going through Undergraduate Pilot Training,” Lauren Olme said. “Both of our flight commanders were B-1 pilots, and the bomber community combined a lot of aspects that we both wanted out of flying. We were extremely fortunate to both get assigned the B-1 out of UPT and haven’t regretted it for a second.”

After completing training at Dyess Air

Force Base, the Olmes moved to Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, and over the next few years journeyed to several assignments together. They deployed on a Bomber Task Force to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, multiple times at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and a combat deployment to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. In 2020 they completed the Air Force’s version of “Top Gun,” the U.S. Air Force Weapons School course.

“Lauren and I have been very blessed with the opportunity to be stationed together, deploy together and go on

multiple monthlong exercises together,” Mark Olme said. “The aviation world is stressful enough, then add competing with your wife, who is better than you, for everything. However, we have got to share some special moments together because of it.”

The couple found out in August they would be adding one more member to their family.

“I was honestly shocked when we found out I was pregnant,” Lauren Olme said. “We had been trying for a few

Air Force Recruiting Service

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas

(AFNS) — Air Force Recruiting Service launched an expanded, redesigned version of airforce. com on Monday as a new, onestop destination introducing potential recruits to the total force opportunities available in the Air Force – whether full time or part time, in or out of uniform.

The new site is be an all-inone destination for any prospect interested in serving in the Air Force.

Airforce.com has always served as a hub for the Air Force’s engagement efforts, providing inspirational and functional content to a wide spectrum of target audiences – including youth, specialized officer candidates, current and prior service airmen, parents, influencers and the American public. The total force evolution of airforce.com makes it simple to understand the many options and pathways available to become an airman.

“Today’s recruiting landscape

is more challenging than ever before and we want the American public to understand that there are many different ways to become an airman,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air Force Recruiting Service commander. “The new total force airforce.com website will help us support our active, Guard and Reserve front-line recruiters by better showcasing the unique strengths, opportunities –and importantly, the flexibilities –of each component in one place as one team within one fully integrated Air Force. Operationally, this shift helps to improve our digital efficiency, collaboration and coordination across the total force, freeing us from recruiting in narrow lanes.”

The new total force version of airforce.com consolidates three websites (airforce.com, goang. com and afreserve.com) into one cohesive web experience that emphasizes the total force mission while creating clear, distinct destinations for active, Guard and Reserve components throughout the site. The site introduces an updated navigation that’s

intuitive and all encompassing, debuting new sections that highlight the different ways to serve and their specific benefits and requirements, while maintaining existing content that’s relevant across all three components.

New sections include Ways to Serve, an entry point that allows visitors to dive deeper into their options within the Air Force’s active component, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, a new Benefits section that outlines the benefits provided by each, a redesigned interactive Locations

page that showcases the breadth of total force locations across the United States and overseas, and a new How to Join section that informs enlisted, officer and priorservice prospects about specific qualifications and requirements.

Because all Air Force components share a common mission, history and vision, and the careers and Air Force Specialty Codes are shared across the service, this information largely mirrors what was previously provided. The total force airforce. com provides an opportunity to

consolidate the information that’s true for all three components and spotlight the differences for visitors – all in one location.

“We know from independent research and our own experiences in the field that most of the general public, and specifically American youth, aren’t really aware of the differences between active duty, Guard and Reserve service paths in the Air Force,” said Barry Dickey, Air Force Recruiting Service Marketing

Largest private-public collaboration in DoD history reflects commitment to clean energy

412th Test Wing Public Affairs

EDWARDS AIR FORCE

BASE (AFNS) — The 412th Test Wing unveiled a new solar facility on the northwest corner of Edwards Air Force Base, Feb. 2. The facility, built in collaboration with Terra-Gen LLC, is a result of the Edwards Solar Enhance Use Lease Project. The novel land management agreement marks the largest private-public partnership within the Department of Defense.

“The Edwards Air Force Base Solar Project is a triple win –it’s good for resilience, it’s good for energy security, and it’s good for the economy,” said Andrew Mayock, White House federal chief sustainability officer. “We commend the U.S. Air Force for its leadership and for showing what’s possible when we invest in our nation’s clean energy future.”

Other speakers at the ceremony included Nancy J. Balkus,

deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Infrastructure; Jim Pagano, Terra-Gen LLC chief executive officer; and Daniel L. Johnson, Mortenson CEO.

The facility, which has almost 2 million solar panels installed, can produce up to 1,300 megawatts of power to the California Independent System Operator grid. This grid is estimated to power more than 238,000 homes, displacing more than 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The solar array itself is the largest project of its kind in U.S. Air Force history.

“The Air Force needs resiliency, reliability and readiness with our energy systems,” said Brig. Gen. William H. Kale III, Air Force Civil Engineer Center commander. “We must enhance mission assurance, and we can’t do it without energy assurance. I don’t care if it’s a small modular reactor that we put up in Alaska,

geothermal in Wyoming, solar power in New Jersey, or wind power in Massachusetts.”

In addition, the solar array aims to lower electricity costs for the civilian workforce, Edwards residents and surrounding communities while providing power grid stability to the local community. The Air Force estimates the project could yield cash rent consideration up to $75.8 million throughout the expected 35-year lease.

Terra-Gen LLC, the partnering renewable energy developer, completed pre-construction due diligence activities that supported Kern County design reviews and project permitting. The Air Force and Terra-Gen’s special purpose entities also executed the first of multiple site development leases authorizing project construction in early 2021.

Under the Air Force’s Enhanced Use Lease program, special purpose entities managed by private developers such as

Terra-Gen LLC incrementally leased and developed the property in exchange for cash or inkind consideration at or above fair market value. The new Enhanced Use Lease area comprises up to 4,000 acres of non-excess underutilized property at Edwards and surrounding private property. The Air Force Civil Engineer Center, a primary subordinate unit of the Air Force

Installation and Mission Support Center, managed the program. The United States Air Force with this project seeks to modernize infrastructure and facilities by investing in climate-ready and resilient air and space installations. This project also aligned with broader goals to transition toward clean energy and reduce reliance on carbon energy sources.

Travis military communities enjoy self-serve convenience with exchange micro markets

Army & Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Airmen without easy access to the Exchange or Express can still fuel up with better-for-you meals and snacks at the Travis Exchange’s Service’s eight micro markets. Micro markets are fully automated self-serve stores located near airmen and Department of Defense civilians working unusual hours or in high-traffic or out-of-the-way areas.

“The Travis Exchange is all in to offer more convenience for the military community,” Travis Exchange General Manager Cathie Byrns said in a press release. “Micro markets are another example of the Exchange’s longstanding commitment to provide for military members wherever they are called to serve.”

First introduced in 2014, micro markets are a fast-growing segment with about 80 new locations opened in 2022. About 80 locations are planned throughout the continental United States in 2023. Micro markets offer a wider product assortment compared with traditional vending machines. Offerings vary by location, with most offering fresh salads, fruit and other better-for-you items. The healthy food offerings are part of the Exchange’s Be Fit 360 program that focuses on holistic wellness and a healthy lifestyle. Select micro market locations also offer over-the-counter medicines, personal hygiene items and other sundries.

Two more micro markets are planned to open at Travis Air Force Base in 2023, including locations at Building 803 and at the Airmen and Family Readiness Center.

DAF announces overseas spouse direct-hire authority pilot program

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Civilian spouses of service members assigned outside the U.S. may now have an easier time finding employment.

The Department of the Air Force has implemented a directhire authority pilot program for locations outside the U.S. authorized by the National Defense

Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2022. This authority enables officials to quickly hire qualifying spouses for certain positions on a temporary basis. The pilot program is available for overseas positions as determined by the hiring officials; previously, military spouses could only be selected from competitive hiring procedures.

Direct-hire authority enables an agency to hire any qualified

applicant through an expedited hiring process that eliminates many of the traditional steps, including consideration of competitive rankings and ratings.

“We recognize that spouse employment is a fundamental quality of life issue for our airmen and guardians, especially for families in overseas locations,” said John Carbone, director of civilian force management, Air Force Manpower, Personnel and Services. “We’re hoping having access to this new hiring authority will open up greater employment opportunities for spouses, which in turn will positively impact military retention, the financial

well-being of the family, and Department of the Air Force readiness.”

The positions must be permanently located overseas, under the general schedule or federal wage system, and GS-15 and below and equivalent.

Spouses must be on the service member’s permanent change of duty station orders at government expense, within the local community area of the duty location, and reside with the service member.

The initial employment appointment will not exceed two years and can be extended in twoyear increments for no more than

a total of six years. The appointments will end when the service member transfers back to the U.S. or to another overseas assignment. They may also end due to divorce, death of the sponsor or upon the sponsor’s retirement or separation from active duty.

Spouses interested in applying for civil service employment may visit the Air Force Civilian Service site at https://afciviliancareers.com/find-a-job/ to search for jobs being filled using the direct-hire authority process. Local civilian personnel offices can also provide assistance and information.

Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

months and I somewhat expected another negative test. I tested right before work and after finding out it was positive, holding that secret from Mark all day was torture, but I wanted to tell him in person.”

Despite being pregnant, Lauren Olme still longed to fly.

Last year, a new Air Force policy stated air crew members may

voluntarily request to fly during pregnancy and no waiver is required to fly in the second trimester with an uncomplicated pregnancy in a non-ejection seat aircraft if all flight safety criteria are met. All pregnant air crew members are also authorized to apply for a waiver regardless of trimester, aircraft or flight profile.

“I can’t overexpress how amazing it is that pregnant women now have the opportunity to fly in all types of aircraft,” Lauren Olme said. “It’s a very personal

decision that Mark and I made together because there are risks involved in flying the B-1 while pregnant but after conferring with Air Force and civilian medical doctors, we felt comfortable with me flying for a few weeks.”

Air crew members who wish to fly while pregnant are informed of the risks to themselves, the fetus, the safety of flight and mission, consistent with all medical conditions. The approval is granted through joint consent of the aviator, obstetrics provider, flight surgeon and commander.

“This policy is a huge benefit to the Air Force. They have deliberately made a change that provides female air crew members the same opportunities as male air crew members,” Lt. Col. Charles Armstrong, 77th Weapons Squadron commander, said.

“This allows female aviators to continue building up their qualifications and flight hours to progress in their career field through pregnancy. It was based on years of analysis and research from air crew physiologists both in the Air Force and outside agencies

to make the determination that it is safe and acceptable for women to fly a longer period than they have done in the past.”

This allows the member to weigh out the pros and cons, ultimately deciding for themselves whether they want to fly or not.

“One of my biggest reservations about getting pregnant while being on a flying assignment was the time away from the cockpit, so having the opportunity to continue to fly and not take

as much time out of the jet is a great thing,” Lauren Olme said. “The policy allows for aviators to fly up to 28 weeks, but for various reasons my medical team decided it best to stop around the 22week point, so that is all the flying I’ll do with our baby.”

Baby Olme, who is expected to arrive in April, has become one of the first babies in the Defense Department to clock 9.2 hours in a supersonic aircraft.

“Lauren is an amazing lady, deploying a unit, developing a schedule, creating exercise scenarios, being a great pilot and leader, all while building a

Division director. “Reframing airforce.com as a total force website helps demystify that difference. The Air Force isn’t a onesize-fits-all organization. We’re a diverse force, and there’s more than one way to protect and defend our country within the Air Force, whether you’re in the active component, Guard, Reserve, or working as a civilian.”

The total force airforce.com also standardizes the initial application process across all components. The new application explains the overall process, directs all applicants to one simplified, secure form to select which component they’re most interested in, and follows a few simple steps to capture necessary information for recruiters. This information is immediately transmitted to the Air Force Recruiting Service’s integrated Lead Refinement Center, which already handles total force recruiting for the Air Force’s active component, Reserve and Air National Guard, as well as the U.S. Space Force.

human,” Mark Olme said. “I am not sure how she does it all, and with poise and grace. I am extremely proud of her, and I can’t wait to tell our child they got to fly supersonic in formation with mommy and daddy.”

Lauren Olme expressed her excitement at being one of the first women to experience this new policy and shared her admiration for the aviation trailblazers before her.

“I’m honored to be one of the first to fly in an ejection seat aircraft while pregnant,” Lauren Olme said. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it if women in the Air Force didn’t advocate for these types of policy changes, so to live out a policy change that other women worked so hard to enact is truly an honor.”

Because the total force airforce.com consolidates the information previously provided on the separate goang.com and afreserve.com domains, these websites were shut down after the new site launched. Redirects have been put in place for all URLs from these two legacy sites to ensure visitors searching for information about the Guard and Reserve are directed to where that information now resides on the total force airforce.com.

Moving forward, all updates for the recruiting audience about the Air Force’s active component, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve will be made to the total force airforce.com, providing one consistent, coordinated recruiting message on a single website. This consolidation effort was informed by discovery interviews, strategy insights, analytics research, website traffic behavior, and recommendations on how best to represent and consolidate this information from the field.

Airforce.com is an ever-evolving destination for information about the Air Force. With this total force upgrade, its scope has never been wider.
