President’s welcome For the past 21 years the streets of Alexandra have been filled with vehicles of all shapes and sizes for the annual Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show — and this year is no exception.

What started as a small community event has flourished to become the event that we know and love today, marking the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and acting as a celebration of community and industry.

With a booming trucking industry in the heart of Melbourne and surrounding suburbs, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest years for the truck show, with trucks from across the state lining up on Alexandra’s main street.

Driven by a thriving community of dedicated volunteers and community groups, the day out provides something for everyone with mini trucks, woodchop competitions and entertainment for both young and old.

A family-friendly atmosphere will be at the heart of this year’s event, with the streets of Alexandra an alcohol-free zone — but feel free to stop in at one of the town’s wonderful pubs and enjoy a beer with the locals!

Another jam-packed year

Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show is returning to the streets of Alexandra for its 22nd year, with thousands expected to descend on the town for the two-day event.

Show president Ayden Embling is anticipating another strong year for the event, with crowds expected to turn out in droves for the Queen’s Birthday weekend event.

“It’s getting bigger and better each year.

We’re always expanding,” he said.

“We’re hoping for 10 000 to 12 000 people over the weekend.”

Since its inception 22 years ago, the event has evolved from showcasing trucks to include boats, hot rods and utes in the mix, ensuring there’s something for everyone across the long weekend.

With more than 150 trucks expected to be on display, visitors are sure to find something to enjoy.

A Saturday service will again be held at the Victorian Truck Drivers’ Memorial Wall to remember those across the trucking industry who have lost their lives.

Music lovers will be able to take in the show’s annual concert, with ARIA Awardnominated artist Jasmine Rae performing alongside the Melbourne-based Iain Archibald Band and Wodonga brothersister duo Zac and Eliza Spaulding.

The traditional sponsors’ dinner will be revamped, with a new and more relaxed cocktail-style event to be introduced, ensuring the event will deliver something for everyone.

With local community groups, sponsors and organisations on hand to provide the food and drink, raffle and auction, Mr Embling said the roots of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show continued to be in the local community.

“All the money goes back to the local community and goes back into running more events and helping the community,” he said.

As with previous years, the woodchop will be returning to captivate crowds with displays of sheer athleticism and strength, as competitors take part in a number of state final competitions including the 300 mm standing block championships and the Victorian treefelling championship.

With more than 50 competitors expected to take part in the 12-event competition, it’s something not to be missed on the Sunday afternoon.

Woodchop competition set to wow Swinging axes, splitting logs and jawdropping strength will be on show when the woodchop competition comes to Alexandra.

In the biggest Victorian woodchop event outside of the Royal Melbourne Show, organisers are expecting a high quality of entertainment as woodchoppers from across the country descend on Alexandra to compete.

With more than 50 competitors expected across the 12-event competition, committee member Gordon Simpson said crowds could expect a good show.

“This year we’ll have the 300 mm standing block championships and the Victorian tree felling championship,” he said.

“A lot of people get around it … people just love coming to this event.”

Juniors will also get a chance to shine, with the Under 18 Standing Block Victorian Championships and Junior Chop taking place.

The Hot Chainsaw Race and Two-Man Combination events are sure to add

some extra theatre to the day, with fierce competition to see who can split the VicForests-donated logs first.

The woodchop events will begin on Sunday, June 10 from 10 am near the Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial on Vickery St.

Little trucks make a big impact A selection of miniature trucks will complement the usual large trucks on display at the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show.

For the fifth year running, husband and wife team Nigel and Renee Lowe will be returning to organise the miniature trucks display at the show, with models and displays taking centre stage.

The event continues to be a crowd favourite as visitors marvel at the workmanship and detail of the meticulously crafted miniature trucks, which come from across the region.

“We usually have 80 to 90 entries,” Mr Lowe said.

“Anyone is welcome; they might have a model they’ve built in the past or are building at the moment and continuing to work on.”

The miniature trucks are hand-built using plastic-kits and extra resin parts such as wheels and mudguards.

Spectators have the chance to vote for their favourite miniature truck model.

“Come along and see just how accurate they can be,” Mr Lowe said.

The Lowes started their business Auslowe Model Accessories in 1992 and, after 26 years in the business, Mr Lowe

said it was truly something built from passion.

“I just started out (making models) when I was quite young, I got a kit as a Christmas present when I was nine or 10,” he said.

“Then it went from a hobby to a full-time business — it’s a hobby gone mad!”

The display will be held in the Landmark Embling building on Sunday, with an Auslowe Model Accessories display with parts and kits for sale.

There are four categories for entry into the display: best bob tail, best open goods, best closed goods and best logger.

Entry is free and winners of each category will receive a trophy to be presented when the major truck show winners are presented.

Wealth of talent is sure to entertain Music is set to flow through the streets of Alexandra, with award-winning artists taking to the stage for a concert on Sunday, June 10.

The Melbourne-based Iain Archibald Band will take to the stage, with the four-piece bringing its special sound of hometown Aussie rock with a touch of modern American country music to the main street of Alexandra.

Comprising brothers Iain and Cameron Archibald, Luke Noack and Jon Lemer, the band is returning to the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show once again after performing at the 2016 event.

Fresh off a recent tour of Victoria and NSW, the band has racked up more than 100 shows across the past three years and travelled more than 25 000 km.

Having performed at the Deni Ute Muster, Tamworth Country Music Festival

and Whittlesea Country Music Festival, the band is well versed in commanding the attention of a crowd and is sure to entertain well into the night.

Three-time Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Award-nominated artist Jasmine Rae will bring her electrifying and engaging live performance to the stage, with her dynamite soul-flavoured and heart-wrenching vocals sure to bring down the house.

Jasmine has also been recognised internationally, winning the 2013 Country Music Association’s Global Artist of the Year award and being named a 2016 International Songwriting Competition finalist.

Brother-sister duo Zac and Eliza Spaulding will also appear on stage to entertain the crowd with their signature country sound.

After taking out Best Performance at the 2018 Aussie Bush Idol competition at the Man From Snowy River Bush Festival in Corryong, the Wodonga teens are sure to impress with their immense talent.

Remembering lost friends Eight names will be added to the Victorian Truck Drivers’ Memorial Wall in Alexandra this year at a service on Saturday, June 9.

The CFA’s new ultra-heavy tanker will be on display.

Firefighting history creates interest A comprehensive history of the Country Fire Authority’s arsenal of firefighting equipment will be on display at the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show.

Gordon Simpson, a CFA volunteer for more than 40 years and a former captain of the Alexandra brigade, said old vehicles and pumps would be showcased alongside the latest additions to the fleet.

A new concept big-fill trailer,

fitted with a powerful pump to rapidly refill tankers, will travel to Alexandra from its Mansfield base and the CFA’s state-of-theart 9000 litre ultra-heavy tanker will also be on show.

Mr Simpson said the annual display gave people an opportunity to see the latest in firefighting capabilities, as well as gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the many hours volunteers contribute to fire-response training and protecting the community.

“The CFA and volunteering is a vital part of our community,” he said.

“The CFA is an important organisation, not only for the emergency response in the area, but also for the show. Members help set up displays and signs early on the day of the show.”

Forest Fire Management Victoria, which also offers fire protection to Alexandra and the greater region, will have a number of its vehicles on show alongside the CFA display.

Following its creation in 2014, the memorial wall has become an important part of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show, giving families and friends a place to visit and pay their respects to Victorian truck drivers who have lost their lives on Australian roads.

The annual memorial service will see Alexandra locals Phil and Merv Shaw commemorated with a plaque on the wall after both lost their lives while working on the road.

Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show committee member Damien Gallagher said the memorial was an opportunity for the trucking industry to gather and remember lost friends and family and share their experiences.

“This year it’s a little bit special as we’re having a convoy of trucks coming from Yarck. It’s a chance to raise a little bit of awareness for the memorial,” he said.

The memorial service will feature transport company TOLL

Group’s senior chaplain Ruth Oakden and 15-year-old Chevon Parker as speakers.

Chevon was just five years old when she was involved in a vehicle accident with her father David and was thrown from the truck.

Mr Gallagher said more than a decade after the accident Chevon was now in a position where she could share her story during what he said would be a “really special” speech.

Previous services have drawn hundreds to the Grant St site, with hundreds more visiting the memorial wall throughout the weekend and across each year to remember loved ones.

An initiative of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show and GriefWork, the memorial has been maintained with the support of the CMV Group Foundation — which has contributed $4000 towards the running and upkeep of the wall.

The memorial wall has also previously been supported and developed with the assistance of the Hallam Truck Centre and Larsen’s Truck Sales.

The service will be held in Rotary Park at 2 pm on Saturday, June 9.

Celebrating show’s success Food, drinks and entertainment will be on the cards when the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show hosts its annual sponsors evening.

More than 70 items will go under the hammer at the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show’s annual auction, with plenty of quality items on offer.

Hand crafted chopping boards will be up for auction, with several opportunities to purchase one of the thoughtfully crafted pieces.

There’ll be plenty of trucking gear up for grabs with jackets from everyone’s favourite trucking companies, Blundstone boots, truck steer tyres and 20-litre containers of truck cleaner among the items available for bids.

Renowned potatoes grown by fourth generation potato farmer Geoff Dobson at his Acheron farm, 7 km south of Alexandra, will also go up for auction, giving punters a chance to enjoy the produce which is revered by some of Australia’s top restaurants.

Celebrating its 21st birthday, the long-running event will take place at the Alexandra Golf Club on Saturday, June 9, giving the organising committee a chance to celebrate this year’s show.

Having transitioned from the traditional sit-down dinner to this year’s cocktail-style event, Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show committee member Gordon Simpson said it was a great opportunity to celebrate those that make the event possible.

“It’s a way to thank the sponsors for being involved. Not only sponsors but people that donate things in kind and really support the truck show,” Mr Simpson said.

“It’s a great opportunity for everybody on the committee to get to know the sponsors and those that help out with the event.”

With entertainment, food and drinks on offer, the evening is sure to be the perfect way to kick-start the weekend’s festivities and celebrate another year of the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show.

New truck shines at show A Werribee vegetable-farming family scooped the pool at last year’s Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show, taking out several major awards for its new truck, at its first official show outing.

The 2016 Kenworth T909, the pride of the Patsuris family business, won the trophies for Best Truck in the Show and the coveted Telstra People’s Choice Award.

Patsuris Premium Produce is a fourthgeneration, family-owned business operated by father and son team Paul and Nick Patsuris, that grows green, red and savoy cabbage, cauliflower and several niche vegetable varieties.

Five days a week the immaculatelymaintained truck transports vegetables from

the Patsuris’ 16 ha farm to the wholesale market at Epping.

Nick Patsuris said the new prime mover replaced an old tray truck that had been in use since the 1980s, and had generated plenty of interest, both on the road and at the market.

“When we first bought the truck we didn’t expect it to be as nice as it was or to get the recognition that it has. We get people on the CB radio saying what a nice truck it is and people taking photos,” Mr Patsuris said.

The family worked with Klos custom trucks in Geelong to create the showpiece; the burgundy and cream colour scheme reflects the business’ brand and stainless trims add wow-factor.

“The Klos boys took photos and put them on their Facebook page; they said they had more than 1500 likes in one morning, they’d never had even half that number on any other truck,” Mr Patsuris said.

The award-winning truck has been displayed at several charity and trade shows

but its outing to Alexandra last year was its first foray into the show world.

“People told us if we were going to show it, Alexandra was the place to go. And being held on a long weekend, we made a weekend of it. It was amazing, for a small country town there was so much going on,” Mr Patsuris said.

“We noticed that a lot of the nicer trucks going around were family owned or part of a small fleet, people had real pride in their trucks and what they do.”

Barbecue helps serve up funds for community Whether it’s a snag on the barbie or an ice-cold beverage, the community of Alexandra will be on hand to make sure no show-goer goes hungry.

From football and netball clubs to kindergartens and local schools, organisations will be out in force to bring community spirit to the main street

Alexandra Kindergarten and St Mary’s Primary School community members will be among those lending a hand to keep the stalls running; and since the event’s inception in 1997, members of the Alexandra Football Netball Club (AFNC) have been found, tongs-in-hand, behind the barbecue, cooking sausages and burgers to keep the crowds happy.

Funds raised by the sporting club have previously gone towards a four-stage upgrade to the Alexandra Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.

The first stage of the project, which included the construction of two netball courts at a cost of $270 000, was completed last year.

Committee member Gordon Simpson encouraged everyone to support the local

organisations on the day.

“All funds that they make during the day go back into the town and help those organisations to run over the year,” he said.

“Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for the town with this event; it’s a great money raiser.

“They support us and we support them.”
