Art and culture

Benalla has long been recognised as north east Victoria’s leading arts and cultural centre. Housed in a striking modernist building that overlooks Lake Benalla, the Benalla Art Gallery is one of Victoria’s pre-eminent regional art galleries. The gallery features some of Australia’s greatest artists including Roberts, Von Guerard, Arkley, Arthur Streeton and Sidney Nolan’s ‘Siege at Glenrowan’ tapestry. Across the bridge from Lake Benalla lies the iconic Ceramic Mural, which was originally inspired by the Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, although its creation went on to include contributions from some of Australia’s leading artists including Thancoupie, Michael Leunig, Sam Jinks, Judy Lorraine and many others. Next to it is the Benalla Costume and Kelly Museum and Visitor Information Centre that houses a costume collection dating from 1770, local historical artefacts, war services room and a permanent Ned Kelly story display. Stroll down Bridge St and be mesmerized by the local talents as you discover North East Artisans. NEA provides studio space for artisans, art and craft workshops as well as a gallery shop.

Street Art Benalla’s world-famous street art festival, Wall to Wall, was the idea of the local community and heading into its fifth year, is building a trail of amazing artworks. Within six months of the idea for a streetart festival beginning back in 2015, the community raised the funds and local, national and international artists started to paint as part of the inaugural event. Thirteen artists worked for just four days transforming the town into a giant artwork. Since then a further three Wall to Wall 14 enjoybenalla.com.au

Festivals have been held with the variety of art and footprint of the event growing year on year. In 2018 international artists such as Elle, George Rose and Malaysian Mural Expert Leonard Siaw transformed some of the town’s most prominent walls. As well as more recent artworks some Wall to Wall favourites like Adnate’s ‘Sophia’ at the Goorambat Church, and Julian Clavijo’s ‘Baby with rainbow afro’ on Carrier St remain a favourite for many visitors.

1. GOORAMBAT SILO The Goorambat community is very proud to have Jimmy Dvate’s artwork adorn the silos. Jimmy is passionate about conservation and is particularly keen to highlight the plight of endangered species. The Barking Owl is the most threatened owl in Victoria with Northeast Victoria a remaining stronghold for wild populations.

2. ‘SOPHIA’ OF GOORAMBAT ‘Sophia’ came into being during the 2017 Wall to Wall Festival. Artist Adnate created this stunning mural to depict the female aspect of the Holy Spirit. Sophia by nature is wise, nurturing, comforting, inspirational and ever present.

3. DEVENISH SILO This artwork, by renowned artist Cam Scale, is a visual tribute to the men and women of the Devenish community who have enlisted in military service. The GrainCorp Devenish silos have long been a symbol of the prosperity of local grain production. That they now depict an aspect of military service provided by the community is a fitting link between the two.

4. TUNGAMAH SILO Western Australian street artist Sobrane Simcock was commissioned to paint the privately owned Tungamah Silos in 2018. This was the first silo to be painted in north-east Victoria, beginning this Silo Art Trail. Sobrane was the first Australian female silo artist.

5. WINTON WETLAND’S WATER TANK This stunning visual tribute was created during the 2016 Wall to Wall Festival by renowned street artist Guide Van Helten. The commission saw Guido incorporate portraits of three local volunteers, Colin Hooke from Chesney Vale Fire Brigade, Robert Green of Taminick Fire Brigade and Danielle Spokes of Winton Fire Brigade.

The playground features rope courses, a ‘hobbit’ cave, a meandering river course and mud play area using materials sympathetic to the natural setting in the gardens. And kids just love it! HECTOR MACDONALD LAWS (HEC) WALLER: DSO AND BAR, RAN Hailed as ‘one of the finest captains who ever sailed the seas’, Hec Waller had a distinguished naval career that culminated in him being lost at sea in 1942. The youngest of 10 children, Hec Waller was born on April 4, 1900 in Benalla. He was educated at Benalla East and No. 31 state schools, later attending Benalla High School. Hec joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1913, was awarded the King’s Medal in 1917, and rose through the ranks to captain at the start

Despite destroying at least four transports and a minesweeper, both the HMAS Perth and the USS Houston were sunk by the Japanese in the early hours of March 1, 1942. A lasting memorial to Hec Waller was unveiled in March 2010, featuring a granite base with a

bronze swirl, depicting the disturbance made by a ship after sinking below the water. A brass sailor’s and captain’s cap are partially submerged in the rock with remembrance poppies, in honour of not only Captain Waller, but of others lost at sea.

HISTORY

Costume and Kelly Museum Benalla is named after an Aboriginal Tribe who once lived in the area. During the goldrush of the 1850’s gold seekers travelling to Beechworth made Benalla an important supply stop and mining also began in the local Reef Hills. In 1969 the first edition of the North East Ensign – now the Benalla Ensign – was published. The railway arrived in Benalla in 1873 and a recreational reserve - now the Botanical gardens - was created that same year. In 1965 Benalla would be proclaimed a city.

Benalla’s rich history, with a focus on notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, can be experienced at the Kelly and Costume Museum. Including Kelly’s prison cell and parts of the old Benalla courtroom, the museum is a must for all Ned Kelly enthusiasts and historians. It also houses a range of exhibits which tell the story of Benalla’s history. Located in Mair St the Kelly and Costume Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4.30 pm and on weekends from 10 am to 3.30 pm.

HISTORY

Benalla Migrant Camp After World War II the former RAAF pilot training base at Benalla Airport was turned into a migrant holding centre to house displaced persons from Europe, who came to Australia as part of the Assisted Migration Programme. Benalla Migrant Camp was commonly referred to as the ‘Balt Camp’. Before it was largely demolished in the 1990s, the camp infrastructure was extensive including four school buildings, a hospital, kindergarten and crèche, chapel, shop, a cinema hall and youth recreation centre as well as several administration and staff buildings. At full

capacity the camp was able to house and feed, 500 individuals. Over the 18 years of its operation (1949– 1967) 60,000 migrants made the camp their home, many for several years. In May 2015 the nine remaining huts on the former camp site as well as its original entrance gates and roads, received state heritage listing as a result of a community-driven campaign, in recognition of its significance in showcasing an important part of Victoria’s cultural and social history.

Ned Kelly TOURING ROUTE

It was in Benalla that Ned Kelly had his first encounters with the law, hiding from police in the Old Boot shop in Arundel Street and having his fate sealed at the Old Courthouse across the road.

in Bridge St. Following the shooting of three policemen at Stringybark in 1878, the Kelly Gang were declared outlaws and a special police taskforce set up its headquarters at the Commercial Hotel in Benalla to co-ordinate the manhunt for the Kelly gang. The next stop is the Old Courthouse (now the Anglican Church and Parish) in Arundel Street. Built in 1864, the Courthouse was the venue for several of the Kelly family trials. The cell, in which Ned was once held, is still in its original state. Diagonally opposite is a small timber shop that used to be the old Bootmaker’s shop — a real Kelly relic. It was here in 1877 that Ned Kelly burst into the shop having escaped police custody while en route to the courthouse. He was recaptured in the shop after a violent struggle with police. The Benalla Cemetery, in Cemetery Road is where many of Ned’s family are buried there as well as Joe Byrne, Kelly’s lieutenant. No visit is complete without taking the journey to Stringybark Creek Historic Reserve and historical walk. Stringybark Creek Historical Reserve is located 50 kilometres south from Benalla, and is where the infamous shootout between police and the Kelly Gang took place on 26 October, 1878.

A visit to the Visitor Information Centre and Museum in Mair Street is a great starting point on your trip through Kelly country.

The Gang surprised the police at their camp and, in the ensuing gun battle, three policeman were killed.

The Costume and Kelly Museum has an impressive collection of Ned Kelly memorabilia, including the blood-stained green silk sash worn by Ned during the Glenrowan siege and the portable police cell in which he was imprisoned. The museum also screens a video, which tells the story of the Kelly legend.

Re-live the Kelly story and visit the many significant sites in and around Benalla as part of the Ned Kelly touring route. www.nedkellytouringroute.com.au or follow them on Facebook.

Benalla Airport Benalla Airport has an intriguing and interesting past. It is a former RAAF training centre used extensively in WWII which would later become home to a migrant camp for post-war refugees. In recent years it has been established as a regional airport which is home to the Gliding Club of Victoria, an Aviation Museum, a series of exhibits commemorating its migrant history and a hub for recreational adventure flights. The ‘Winjeel’ is an Australian designed military plane used to Air-Force, Navy, add Army pilots from the late 1950s through to the mid-1970s. It’s a sturdy workhorse powered by an American ‘radial’ engine. It can carry a pilot and two passengers. The ‘Nanchang’ is a sleek plane designed in China to train pilots of the People’s Liberation Army and Navy during the Cold War. Pilot and passenger are accommodated in a ‘fighter-style’ cockpit, and its retractable landing gear and ‘radial’ engine give it great performance. Explore the history of flying in Australia by touring the Museum, Take time to look through the collection of historic memorabilia and see some of the worlds classic aircraft up close. The Gliding Club of Victoria (GCV) is the largest club of its type in Australia, attracting pilots from around the globe to experience the area’s world-renowned flying conditions. The club offers great facilities for its members, visiting pilots both national and internationally, and the general public. GCV has the ability to host both national and regional competitions which run between one and two weeks, typically attracting up to 60 glider pilots and a similar number of crew members. In January 2017 GCV hosted the World Gliding Championships attracting hundreds of competitors and fans to Benalla. ENJOY GOORAMBAT AND DEVENISH DEVENISH

TC TREWIN AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM A shed was built in 1987 with the aid of a Government Grant to preserve local agricultural machinery of the older generation of farmers. The significant collection of well labelled items, include a HV McKay binder, a Big E Harvester, Sunshine No 6 header, Lennon’s Winnower and a 1930s Bedford truck. Today’s modern machinery is in stark contrast to the exhibits which are well worth a look at this museum in Devenish.

ANNIS AND GEORGE BILLS HORSE TROUGH Donated in memory of the horses that did not return from WWI. Bill’s horse watering troughs were manufactured in Australia and installed to provide relief for working horses in the first half of the twentieth century. A trust fund through the will of George Bills financed around 700 troughs in Australia and 50 overseas. The Bill’s trough at Devenish is special because it has an attached dog watering trough. At the end of WWI Australian’s had 1300 surplus horses not able to return home. The majority of these horses were sold and became remounts for the British Army in India. Only one returned to Australia.

GOORAMBAT It’s been described as the small town with the big art — but it’s much more than that. Goorambat is a town steeped in history. In 1954 it was chosen by the Queen for an overnight stay. It is also home to mechanical royalty, a classic 1960s tractor, with an intriguing back story. Purchased by Cooper Bros from Wisconsin, it arrived in town in pieces before being

assembled and ultimately sold to local man Colin Davis who took it to Esperance. Many years later he would return, bringing the tractor with him. It was subsequently sold and donated to the Goorambat Community Group who have taken care of it ever since. It is currently on display for the enjoyment of the general public. enjoybenalla.com.au 47

Enjoy Swanpool

Just outside Benalla lies the idyllic country community of Swanpool.

A traditional Victorian town close to stunning waterfalls, tracks and gorgeous views. The General Store has an extensive menu and wine selections with a rustic beer garden. The front fence flaunts murals each side — one depicting the history of the town and the other a historic account of infamous bushranger Ned Kelly’s travels. In the heart of town there’s the ‘Swan Pavilion’ with a new park with native plantings. If wineries are more your scene, just head east for a five-minute drive from Swanpool to Kooyonga Creek Wines, a family owned boutique winery. For garden lovers Samaria farm is just down the road. Featuring 3000 Damask roses, the farm is stunning to visit in summer. The farm features a café serving all-day breakfasts and home cooked lunches and treats, using veggies and eggs straight from the garden.

The distillery produces high quality essential oils and hydrosols with products for personal and home use incorporating rose, lemon and lime – all handpicked and hand bottled on the farm. Purchase from the farm’s produce store. Open to the public on weekends from 8 am to 4 pm, group bookings are also available on any day by appointment. The real hidden gem of Swanpool is the marvelous cinema in the original town hall. It’s one of the few cinemas that still has the old carbon arc glass advertising slides and 16 and 35 mm projectors. Today though it screens the best of contemporary arthouse and quality movies. Matinees, fundraisers and private functions are all catered for. Enjoy a picnic and barbeque in the park before the screenings. Call 0498 007 988, www.swanpoolcinema.com.au.

Enjoy Glenrowan

Historic Glenrowan is a short drive from Benalla on the Hume Freeway and is best known for being the place where Ned Kelly made his notorious ‘Last Stand’. Glenrowan was named after farmers James and George Rowan who ran farms in the area between 1846 and 1858. The township was settled in the late 1860s, the Post Office opening on February 22, 1870.

town, catering for those wishing to see the place where Ned Kelly made his famous ‘Last Stand’ or to re-live the excitement of the siege at the Computerised Animated Theatre.

Glenrowan was a quiet little stop-over and coach staging point between Benalla and Wangaratta until the events of June, 1880, blazed its name and that of Ned Kelly across the world.

On entering the town, Australia’s most famous bushranger stands tall and imposing as a six-metre statue in the main street where the seige occurred on June 28, 1880.

The Glenrowan siege was Australia’s first widely reported and photographed criminal drama. Telegraphy and outdoor photography were new, and news from Glenrowan via Benalla and Wangaratta telegraph operators, appeared in special newspaper editions almost as it happened.

You can also visit the actual sites of the Kelly gang’s last stand as part of the Ned Kelly Touring Route.

Today, Glenrowan is a thriving tourist

Other places of interest include Kate’s Cottage Museum and Homestead — why not pick up a souvenir while there? Stop and enjoy: Drop in to the Glenrowan Hotel. enjoybenalla.com.au 49

Enjoy Glenrowan wine region A relaxing drive to Glenrowan would not be complete without a visit to the region’s award-winning wineries and the brewery Located on the edge of the Warby Ovens National Park in North East Victoria, the beauty of the Glenrowan Wine Region and the natural vistas will captivate. The old established vineyards nestled on the western foothills of the Warby Range have wide views over the valley across to Winton Wetlands while on the eastern slopes the panoramic spectacle from cellar door of the Victorian Alps beyond is breathtaking.

the Old Block Café. Coffee and cake are available daily at the cellar door. At Booths Taminick Cellars visitors can taste a wide selection of full-flavoured reds, refreshing whites and luscious fortified wines. With aged vines planted in 1919 and a family winemaking history spanning four generations, the winery also offers bed and breakfast accommodation in a self-contained cottage. Casual lunches from the wood fired pizza oven are available on select weekends.

Whilst Shiraz is the signature wine of the region all the wineries are producing interesting blends and styles from other varieties.

Try the craft beers of Black Dog Brewery which are brewed on premise at Booths. There is sure to be something on the brewer’s list to please the palate with four core beers in the range and specialty brews created for the hop and malt connoisseur.

Situated just 2 kilometres from the Glenrowan township, the wine, winery and cellar door at Morrisons delights visitors. Enjoy a seasonal tasting platter with a glass of Tempranillo, Durif, Rosé or Fiano in a secluded garden spot or from an elevated platform to take in the views.

Glenrowan Wine Region hosts Trails, Tastings & Tales Food and Wine Festival on the June long weekend and the Glenrowan Winemakers Weekend in October.
