Photography by Tess Follett.
We had previously dealt with Glenn at Mensland and had a great experience, so of course we chose him to dress our groomsmen. We could not have made a better choice! Our theme was black-tie so the men were in dinner suits and bow tie. Glenn dressed Samuel and his four groomsmen and Georgina’s father and brothers. We had some specific requests for the suits and Glenn was more than accommodating for this. Glenn was a complete professional. He was able to give the men a modern look in their traditional suits which looked incredible on the day. Most importantly for us, he made the entire experience fun and simple for the men. We are so thankful for Glenn’s help and cannot recommend him and the team at Mensland more highly. — Georgina and Samuel Prentice

From the moment you announce your engagement, well-wishers may ask questions about your wedding preparations. Some people may offer some helpful pearls of wisdom or advice that is distracting or confusing. Don’t panic. Everything will fall into place. I know this because it is the reccuring advice that flows through the bridal submissions which inundate the Bride and Groom desk. Here’s my tip: enjoy your planning and stay true to yourselves. You are getting married because you and your soul mate want to formally commit to spending the rest of your lives together — and that is cause for celebration. www.facebook.com/ gvbrideandgroom Bridal submissions: Visit www.mmg.com.au/ bride-and-groom and click on the bridal submissions link in the right-hand column or email corinna.boldiston@ sheppnews.com.au for details
How you celebrate will be a reflection of your personalities as a couple, your cultural and social background, life values and budget. And that’s what I love about this issue’s brides from the Goulburn and Murray regions. Their weddings vary from intimate ceremonies with just three witnesses and a pet dog to relaxed garden ceremonies, traditional church weddings, and a mini-music festival where the guests helped with almost every aspect of the event — and then camped overnight. Every wedding is unique and special, every bride is radiant and the joy of each couple shines in the beautiful images throughout this edition. There is so much inspiration throughout these pages, from bridal fashion to flower trends and tips on how to help your photographer capture the most beautiful images of your day. Whether you are laid-back in your decision making or want to organise things to the finest detail, enjoy your planning and I wish you a wonderful wedding day.

Marriage creates
BRIDE & GROOM 11
T
he marriage of Laura Johnston and Mark Pollard was more than the joining of two people as husband and wife; it was also a celebration of the creation of a new family. The couple, with three children from previous relationships, Owen, 7, Alirah, 6 and Marli, 3, was married at King River Estate Wines, Edi on Saturday, April 18, 2015. A special ceremony, where the couple and each child poured different coloured sand from individual containers into one combined vessel, signified the formation of the new family. “It was beautiful and the kids felt very special to be able to be involved and pour the sand, they were in awe of the whole day, it was amazing,” Laura said. A navy and orange theme and rustic-inspired decorations included hessian table runners, flower-filled timber boxes as centrepieces, an archway trimmed with wooden love hearts and a wine barrel doubling as a cake table. “Don’t be afraid to take a few risks with doing things yourself such as decorations; it saved us money and was beautiful as it was exactly what we wanted, we had fun planning how things would be,” Laura said. The bridal party arrived in three trucks, polished for the occasion and was a special touch despite the bride being a little nervous navigating the steps in her wedding gown and high heels. Goulburn Valley bridal suppliers included Leticia Lopes Photography, Shepparton; Man to Man, Shepparton; Rambling Rose Florist and Home Wares, Benalla; Hair Manor, Benalla and Lavish Skin Therapy Clinic, Benalla.

Reading for the family’s sand ceremony The gathering of this new family will have a deep influence upon them. We realise that in order for the home to be a happy one, it is essential that there be love and understanding between the children and the adults being married. As you each hold your sand, the separate containers of sand represent your lives to this moment; individual and unique. As you now combine your sand together, your lives also join together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured together in individual containers, so will your marriage and family be.

A photographer’s tips SHEPPARTON PHOTOGRAPHER LETICIA LOPES HAS LOTS OF EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE LENS AT WEDDINGS.
BRIDE AND GROOM ASKED HER TO SHARE TIPS ON HOW COUPLES CAN HELP THEIR PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURE THE BEST IMAGES POSSIBLE.
Do your research
Surprise, surprise!
Visit, or “stalk”, all wedding photographer websites. Whose photos do you like best? Make a shortlist and then organise a time to meet your favourite photographers.
Planning a special surprise during the speeches? A performer? Fireworks? Please let the photographer know so they can be prepared when the moment comes.
Meet with a photographer face to face
Keep it simple
It’s a good idea to meet your photographer before making a booking. You want to make sure you “click” with the photographer. You are going to spend a lot of time with them on one of the most important days of your life. If you have a particular idea, feel free to discuss it with your photographer. Just bear in mind that if you are getting married in winter, no photographer will be able to recreate those summer photos you’ve pinned on your Pinterest board.
Let your wedding day be as simple as it can be. Do not let yourself be influenced by unforeseen events because they will happen. Keep an open mind and be ready for changes.
Consider your wedding location Lighting! I say this to clients a lot! Sometimes a location is beautiful, but if it has bad lighting the photos won’t look good. If you’re booking a church, make sure you’re allowed to take pictures inside and check if there are any other restrictions. Some churches don’t allow flash photography, so please ask the church so you can let your photographer know.
Time is of the essence To organise the timeline for your wedding day, ask your hairdresser and make-up artist an estimated time for their work. Then add at least another 30 minutes extra — just to be sure.
Family portraits I always recommend taking pictures of family or groups (parents, grandparents or friends) immediately after the ceremony. I recommend making a pre-made list of all family photo combinations that need to be taken to speed-up the process and to make sure no-one is missing. As a rule of thumb, I usually allow five minutes per group.
Creative portraits These are the photographs you will want to frame, give to friends and use as thankyou cards. Be sure to allow at least 40 minutes to an hour — the more time you give to these photographs, the better the results will be. It’s important to remember these portraits require a little patience and sometimes an adventurous spirit. If possible, it would be great if the photographer could get in the car with the bride and groom before the ceremony, after the ceremony, or on the way to the reception. This way, the photographer can capture some of the most intimate moments.
Dance the night away Some couples can be a bit shy when it comes to the first dance. I know it can be daunting when everyone is watching — but it shouldn’t be. Enjoy the moment. Stare into each other’s eye and give your husband a hug. If you nervously shuffle around or talk all the way through it then your first dance photos will not be the best they can be.
Relax Relax and enjoy your day. Remember to smile and have a great time and you will have beautiful photographs.
“Unplug” or “device-free” Are your guests there to take photos or to be part of a beautiful day and enjoy the love between the people getting married? With the digital age, everyone owns a camera or at least a smart phone that takes photos. I find guests are often watching a wedding through their device’s screen instead of enjoying the moment and giving the professional photographer room to capture the images the couple are paying for. There is a growing trend for ‘unplugged’ weddings where a sign is placed at the door asking guests to turn off their phones, relax and enjoy the day while the photographer captures the ceremony and formal photos. If couples are uncomfortable with asking people to stay ‘device-free’, you may like to have your celebrant advice guests at the start of the ceremony to respect the photographer’s working space. This will avoid guests getting in the way when the bride is walking down the aisle or the couple is exchanging vows. People will often jump in the middle of the aisle to photograph the bride and the professional photographer can completely miss a beautiful shot because the back of someone’s head is all they can see. Too many times I have had to run down the aisle and ask people to move.
After the ceremony Normally family and friends that aren’t in the photos stay to either side of the professional photographer snapping. But it gets very confusing to the people being photographed because they don’t know where to look, so photographers can end up with lots of photos with people looking at different cameras. A wedding day is very rushed and guests might be making our job harder and taking precious photography time from the couple.
Let the photographer do what they do best Another thing that happens a lot is guests suggesting photos and poses to the photographer. I have my style of photography; the couple hired me because they like it. I am polite and try to make the suggestion happen, but I could have missed an important moment while trying to create a photo that will most likely be deleted. BRIDE & GROOM 31

Lauren Willmott and Anthony Murphy February 7, 2015 Wedding season has been in full swing for the Willmott family, with Lauren Willmott marrying just four months after one of her sisters. Lauren and Anthony Murphy had known each other as family friends since they were nine years old but romance didn’t blossom until they were 15. They married after dating for 10 years. SUNSET PROPOSAL: Anthony took Lauren to Sydney for a weekend in the middle of her university exams and proposed during a stroll along Bondi Beach. “It was sunset and because it was October we had the beach almost to ourselves,” Lauren said. VINTAGE INSPIRED: The invitation design was inspired by a vintage floral painting and was the springboard for the wedding’s relaxed, vintage theme. “We had a typewriter for a guestbook and Polaroid cameras,” Lauren said. FAMILY TIES: Pictures of parents and grandparents on their wedding days were placed on the mantelpiece at the reception. The display honoured the family ties which were special to the couple.
STRING QUARTET: Lauren walked down the aisle to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri which was performed by her uncle Peter Read and his string quartet. While Lauren surprised Anthony with her entrance song, the couple chose Ellie Goulding’s How Long Will I Love You for their bridal dance.
SPECIAL MEMORIES: “The entire day from start to finish was amazing,” Lauren said. “We were married and had a room full of our closest friends and family all together, in one place.” BRIDE’ S ADVICE: “Don’t stress. I know everyone says it, but it is one day. It is going to be perfect no matter what, so enjoy it. It is so much fun. Things may go wrong on the day but to be honest I was not worried, even the 37-degree-heat didn’t bother us.”
Cat Lagana and James Armstrong March 21, 2015 Cat Lagana and James Armstrong planned their wedding in just two months and were fortunate to be able to secure everything they wanted to make their dream day a reality. “Plan your wedding to be a reflection of your personalities, involve family and friends in this planning where possible,” Cat said. “On the day all of your planning will come together, giving you a sense of satisfaction and you can relax and enjoy every second of your wedding day.” Bride’s parents: Frank and Franca Lagana | Groom’s parents: Julie Stone and Murray Armstrong Service: Hurlstone Homestead, Grahamvale | Reception: Olivehouse Event and Function Centre, Kialla West, south of Shepparton Photographer: Tamara Cadd Photography, Moama Bride’s dress: Bernadette Couture, Armadale | Bridesmaids’ dress: Swish, Melbourne Suits: Calibre, South Yarra and O’Keeffe Mensland, Shepparton | Flowers: Renato’s Florist, Shepparton Cake: The Cake-up Artist, Kyabram | Hair: Tony Reynolds, Melbourne | Make-up: Wellsprings Day Spa, Shepparton 36 BRIDE & GROOM

MUSTANGS: As a surprise, Cat organised three black Mustang convertibles to transport the bridal party to the ceremony. “Watching the nervous excitement on James’ face as we arrived at the gardens in Mustangs made the surprise so special. The emotion on the day was incredible and so special to us both,” Cat said.
PEONY ROSES: Cat had her heart set on carrying a bouquet of peony roses but as they only bloom for a short period each year was told by several florists it wasn’t possible. “Sam from Renato’s Florist went to extreme efforts to import my bridal bouquet from Holland, a massive task that he managed to achieve. I just couldn’t imagine carrying anything else on my wedding day,” Cat said.
STRING QUARTET: Guests at the ceremony were treated to an amazing performance by string quartet Alto Strings which has performed with artists as diverse as Katy Perry and Luciano Pavarotti in venues from The Proms in London to the Sydney Opera House. The quartet played an instrumental version of U2’s All I Want Is You as the bride walked down the aisle. MAN OF HONOUR: Instead of having a maid of honour Cat asked her best friend of 10 years to act as the man of honour, with a female friend as bridesmaid. Cat said in this instance she dispensed with tradition and chose a male friend as her first attendant in recognition of their long-standing friendship. BRIDE & GROOM 37
Kasi Buckworth and Tim Kelly February 28, 2015 While mutual friends introduced the pair, Kasi’s teenage brother Luke already knew Tim as one of his favourite school teachers. After dating for two years, Tim secretly asked Kasi’s parents for permission to marry their daughter and a week later got down on bended knee to propose. Bride’s parents: Michael and Naomi Buckworth | Groom’s parents: Danny and Cathy Kelly Service: St Brendan’s Catholic Church, Shepparton | Reception: Sherbourne Terrace, Shepparton Photographer: Leticia Lopes Photography, Shepparton Bride’s dress and bridesmaids’ dresses: Michele’s Bridal and Formal Wear, Shepparton Suits: Identity, Shepparton | Flowers: Bonnie Weidenbach Floristry, Murchison Cake: friend Hannah Chasemore | Hair: Lavish Hair, Shepparton | Make-up: Makeup Design by Dee, Shepparton 38 BRIDE & GROOM
The hue of your bridesmaids’ dresses can be the inspiration for the rest of your colour theming.
RELAXED APPROACH: Kasi describes herself as a “pretty laid-back person” and had no preference towards themes or colours until she found her bridesmaid dresses. “I based everything around the colours of their dresses — soft, pretty, elegant — and everything seemed to tie-in nicely together,” the bride said. The reception theme continued the soft colours, with pearl-coloured balloons used as centrepieces.
MULTIPLE CELEBRATIONS: As well as toasting the newlyweds, there were other occasions to celebrate during the day. Among these were extended family being together and Kasi’s best friend and bridesmaid Marissa Kerr’s 21st birthday.
BRIDE’S ADVICE: “Take it all in. Everybody told me how quick it would go and they were right. Don’t forget to eat throughout the day; you will be so busy getting ready and it is a long day.”
SONGS OF PROMISE: Kasi walked down the aisle to the modern and fun song Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. The couple’s first dance to Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us by Starship was the result of a childhood vow made by the bride. “My mum played this song when I was younger and I loved it. When I was about 12 years old I told her that it would be my wedding song. Lucky for me, Tim loves it too. Funnily enough it was the same song Tim’s uncle and aunty danced to for their bridal dance in 1988. They were so surprised to hear it.”

More than half of the guests camped the night — some staying up to witness the sunrise — and the following day helped pack up after sharing breakfast together. “Our wedding truly was a mini festival . . . laid back, relaxed and all about the love,” Jamie said. “Everyone contributed in some way; we were blessed with our generous family and friends and we hope they experienced our day rather than felt like just a spectator.” Groom’s parents: Mo and Dougy Boyle Service and reception: Private property owned by Paul and Catherine Huckett near Numurkah. VILLAGE WEDDING: Jamie and Allan enlisted their circle of family and friends to help organise their wedding day. “Everyone who came to our day made it a little more special in their own way, whether they helped with craft afternoons in the weeks leading up to it, or helped set up or pack down or even brought a plate of food to share. Nothing was too much trouble and thanks to our little village our wedding came together, shortly after Christmas and with a new baby,” Jamie said. CEREMONY: Beautiful trees provided some shade and respite from the 40-degree heat and added to the enchantment of the evening when a cooling breeze rustled through their leaves. “The ceremony was the most memorable part, surrounded by all those we love, including our two-month old daughter Dempsey; standing beside old friends and hearing our musical friends’ beautiful music flowing around us will never be forgotten,” Jamie said. SCOTTISH HERITAGE: The groom and his groomsmen wore kilts as their Scottish heritage dictated and the bride’s lace-trimmed wedding gown was lovingly hand-made by her grandmother Chris Farrah.

FIRST DANCE: A patchwork banner featuring the lyrics of the classic Beatles song All You Need Is Love was the perfect stage backdrop for the newlyweds’ first dance to the same music. Friends took to the stage during the celebrations performing a mix of music; there was even an impromptu reunion of Jamie’s original band with her taking lead vocals.

Monica Veal and Joe’l Flückiger April 17, 2015 Snow in the Swiss alps was the majestic winter backdrop for Monica Veal and Joe’l Flückiger’s engagement, while their wedding was celebrated across the globe in Shepparton. The Australian-Swiss marriage was always going to be a festive mix of cultures for Monica and Joe’l.

The intimacy of the couple’s long-awaited moment alone captured in this image at Kirwans Bridge.
SNOW PROPOSAL: Joe’l proposed to Monica after a three-hour walk through the forest and snow to watch the sun rise over the picturesque ski village Zermatt. As the sunrise reached the top of the famous Matterhorn, Joe’l revealed the most beautiful ring Monica had ever seen and asked her to marry him. DRESS DESIRES: Monica chose her wedding dress during her first shopping excursion. “One shop, three dresses and I was done — I love my dress,” she said. “If you love the first or third dress you try on, buy it. Don’t shop around; you’ll go crazy and chances are you’ll end up back at the first store.”
SIMPLE ELEGANCE: Monica had no colours in mind which she said added to her ease of making theming decisions. Fairy lights at the reception created an intimate and fairytale atmosphere. “We kept it simple with candles and flowers for the tables. Flowers do their own thing, so you really don’t need much,” Monica said. “My sisters created little jars of flowers to hang off the church pews.”
A lace bodice is an elegant statement in bridal style.
CAR CHATS: Monica loved the drive to the church in the old family car with her parents and her next car journey with her husband to Kirwans Bridge for photos. “Joe’l and I hadn’t had time to ourselves for nearly four months, since he only arrived in Australia one week before our wedding. So for just the two of us to be together was really special.”
CULTURAL MIX: Guests travelled from Joe’l’s home country Switzerland and a hymn was sung at the reception in English, German and French. It’s not tradition to have bridesmaids and groomsmen in Switzerland so Joe’l’s brothers enjoyed the novelty of being groomsmen.
LUCKY RAIN: Wet weather added to the atmosphere of the day, Monica said. “I loved it! It made for even more creative photos and it looks great in the wedding film. “It didn’t disturb us at all, besides, it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day.” BRIDE & GROOM 45

MEANINGFUL LYRICS: The lyrics of James Blunt’s Bonfire Heart had special significance for Melissa and Daniel and was their choice for the bride’s entrance song. “People like us — we don’t need that much, just some. The lyrics rang so very true to us,” Melissa said.
TIMELY PAUSE: The marriage celebrant advised the bride to pause part way down the aisle and take in the scene. “I’m so glad Dad remembered just before we got to our guests because it’s that moment now I’m so thankful for,” Melissa said. DREAM STYLING: “We have watched family and friends get married and after 10 years of being together it was finally our turn. Daniel is Italian but we didn’t do the traditional Italian wedding most expected,” Melissa said. “We wanted a soft, intimate garden wedding. I had some Pinterest ideas and Pelle’s Events was able to make our dream ceremony and reception come to life.” BRIDE & GROOM 47

NEW YEAR PROPOSAL: When they first met, Soofia was living in Perth and Matt in the mining town of Chinchilla, Queensland. At their second meeting the pair realised they were made for one another and a long-distance romance ensued, culminating with a marriage proposal around New Year, 2015. “Our New Year became more special for us as we were both excited for making our future (together) and reaching our dreams,” Soofia said. “My beautiful mum walked me down the aisle. It was such a special and proud moment for us. “I will never forget the feeling when I saw Jamie’s face as I began walking down the aisle. I had such a sense of calm and happiness.” Echuca musician Tyler Hudson performed Keith Urban’s Only You Can Love Me This Way for the bride’s entrance. The couple’s first dance as husband and wife was to I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz.
COCKTAIL RECEPTION: There were no formal seating arrangements which allowed the newlyweds to spend more time with their guests. “It created a fun and relaxed atmosphere which we loved,” Alicia said.
GARDEN GLORY: The beautiful garden at Hurlstone Homestead was the styling point and hero of Alicia and Jamie’s ceremony and reception. “We kept the styling simple with pastel pinks and creams to keep with the rustic, garden feel,” Alicia said. As the sun set, guests chatted around vintage wine barrels or white tables adorned with flower arrangements in jars decorated with hessian and lace. They also played quoits in the garden while waiting for the bridal party to arrive for the reception.

STAYING TOGETHER: A Mercedes Benz van, supplied by In The Go Limos transported the bridal party for the day. “We wanted all of the bridal party to be able to fit in one car so we could enjoy the day all together,” Stephanie said. CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL: A Christmas morning marriage proposal was the perfect start to Stephanie and Nathan’s life together. “It was a lovely day to get engaged as we were able to celebrate with family all day,” Stephanie said. MUSIC: An upbeat song choice, Kelly Rowland’s When Love Takes Over welcomed the newlyweds to their reception to get the celebrations started. Nathan chose Everything by Michael Buble for their first dance as a married couple. “It was very special and had meaning for both of us,” Stephanie said.

SPONGE CAKE: Layers of sponge cake filled with jam and cream and served with berries was a simple yet well-received wedding cake. “Our local bakery made the cake and I ran out of time to decorate it. Jam and cream oozed out of the layers and we had so many positive comments from our guests. The cake was huge and the whole thing was eaten,” Sheridan said.

DIY BRIDE: A distinct DIY theme for the wedding saw family and friends join forces to make wedding invitations, bottle fruit for the bonbonniere and decorate the garden and marquee for the celebrations. Cherries sourced from Bunbartha and apricots from Invergordon were gorgeous keepsakes for guests, while wheat, harvested from the family farm in December and used in the decorations, added a rustic touch. “The day before the wedding I had family members from both sides as well as bridal party and friends helping us decorate the marquee and garden,” Julia said. “It was really special to have all those people involved in making our day so wonderful. And it made the whole wedding experience last longer.” PICNIC SURPRISE: Craig’s surprise marriage proposal was on AFL grand final day, 2014 following a picnic lunch atop a hill overlooking paddocks of lush green wheat and yellow flowering canola. Julia’s homemade engagement ring, crafted from fencing wire and a shiny pebble, was later replaced with a diamond ring from Purdey’s Jewellers. “However I also wore the ‘real’ one from Craig on our wedding day,” Julia said.
MARQUEE MAGIC: A marquee reception followed the marriage ceremony, with Goulburn Valley Party Hire supplying everything to create the beautiful, relaxed atmosphere Julia and Craig wanted to achieve. “Along with family and friends we sewed over 100 m of bright floral bunting for decorating the marquee and garden. We were really happy with the look and feel that we created,” Julia said.
MEMORIES: “I think for both of us the most memorable part was seeing how happy our families were, in particular our parents. It was so special to have all our families together at the same time, as well as our dearest friends from all parts of our life, there to help celebrate,” Julia said. “When I remember our wedding day, I remember the happiness and enjoyment that the people we love most took from the day.” Photography: Leticia Lopes Photography, Shepparton

HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS: Olivia and Chris met as teens and dated for seven years before Chris dropped to his knee to propose during a weekend away. An elegant high-tea bridal shower was held in the bride’s family garden, the same venue chosen for the couple’s classic-themed wedding. “We wanted it to be timeless and simple,” Olivia said. “We chose to put a lot of effort into planning the ceremony as we felt that was definitely the most important part.” AISLE OF FLOWERS: A string quartet added to the amazing the
atmosphere at the ceremony, which was styled by Pelle’s Events with urns of flowers, an aisle of flower petals and chiffon-draped altar backdrop.
MEMORIES UNVEILED: Olivia treasures the moment she first saw Chris at the end of the aisle. “It was everything I had ever imagined. Another vision I often think about was when Chris lifted my veil and I finally saw him clearly — now as my husband.” COCKTAIL RECEPTION: The couple opted for a cocktail reception in contrast to their traditional wedding ceremony. “We still kept many of the traditions but took the formal feeling out of the night. It was one big party,” Olivia said. BRIDE’S ADVICE: “Never forget what you are actually doing. It is very easy to get caught up in all the beautiful things that come with a wedding, but the most important part is that you are marrying the love of your life. To theme or not to theme? A high tea can be kept simple and elegant, or incorporate a theme. Themes could include: • Colours or styling that tie into the wedding. • A theme that relates to the bride — perhaps something to do with her occupation, hobbies or lifestyle interests. • Shabby chic — think ruffles, bunting, lace and ribbons. • Floral — decorate high-society style, or hang flowers in jars from trees, and allow guests to take bunches of flowers home as gifts. The floral styling can be pretty, classic, or focus on the bride’s favourite flower. The options are endless. • The bride’s favourite charity. Centre the theme around the charity and support the cause by buying some of their fundraising items for decor, favours, game supplies and prizes. • Bring the outdoors indoors — bring in potted plants and an outdoor seat for an atrium-themed setting. • Silverware, matching or mis-matched china, teapots and tablecloths all add to the sense of occasion. • Teas of the world — think hot tea, iced tea, flavoured teas, and tea hampers as prizes for games or gifts for the guests.
“
WHO SAID A HIGH TEA WAS STRICTLY FOR A BRIDAL SHOWER? CHELSEA CRAWFORD’S BRIDESMAIDS TRANSLATED THE ELEGANT THEME TO A HENS’ DAY. My four bridesmaids organised a high tea for my hens’ day at The Connection. The venue was lovely and the food was great. The Connection made delicious scones, sandwiches and pastries. My bridesmaids surprised me with a mad-hatter theme and had made some novelty mad-hatter style cakes. I really liked the high tea and mad-hatter theme, it was something quite different for a hens’ day. We are expecting our second child in September. I wanted a low-key hens’ day. Our wedding will be between Christmas and New Year when my sister is home from America and Daniel’s sister from Darwin. Chelsea will marry Daniel Natalizio at St Brendan’s Catholic Church, Shepparton followed by a reception at Olivehouse Event and Function Venue, Kialla West, south of Shepparton.

My parents’ home is my favourite place in the world; it’s always somewhere I imagined having my bridal shower. I didn’t want any gifts so instead I asked guests to bring a plate of sweet or savoury food to share; it was a great way to involve everyone. My great grandmother’s lace tablecloth was used and many of the cups and saucers belong to my grandmother. My mum hung the bridal horseshoes she was given on her wedding day around as decorations. Making wedding dresses out of toilet paper, and funny questionnaires were some of the games organised by my bridesmaids. It was a beautiful, relaxed day for my family and friends of all ages and I was given some wonderful advice from the married ladies. See Olivia’s wedding on page 61.

How to The positioning of a bridal veil is very much about personal choice and is influenced by how you wear your hair, the style of the veil and your gown. If you’re trying to achieve the full veil, princess look, wear the veil at the top of your head, if you love the idea of a veil but don’t want it to detract too much from your gown wearing it towards the back of your head may be an option. Often your hairdresser will position the veil for you once you have had your hair done or explain to your attendants how to fix it firmly in place. Variations of the following three styles are most commonly worn by Australian brides.
High on the head Full veils, worn high on the head, are best anchored in a swept-up hairstyle although long, flowing curls or a sleek style will also accommodate this veil. This will achieve a princess-style effect – think Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton – and the more tiers your veil has the greater the volume of shimmering fabric around your face. Veils of medium fullness can also be worn high on the head, giving some fullness in an understated manner.
Towards the back of the head A veil worn towards the back of the head can still be seen, giving you the bridal look without being too dominant. Veils of medium fullness can be worn with up and down hairstyles towards the back of the head. Worn with a flowing, down hairstyle single tier veils look great positioned at the back of the head. This is also a good place to wear a tiered veil when you want to wear a blusher over your face, keeping the longer tiers away from your face allowing the detail of your gown bodice to stand out.
Low at the back of the head Single tiered veils tucked under a stylish up do will give you a sleek, uncluttered look. Crystals or pearls scattered through your hair or fresh flowers are the perfect accompaniment to veils worn low at the back of the head. Informal weddings or when the bride doesn’t wish to wear a veil over their face is where you will most often see veils worn in this manner. 66 BRIDE & GROOM
Birdcage veils or bridal fascinators are increasing in popularity and team lace, crystals and pearls with diamond shaped netting for an elegant option.
Cathedral veils suit traditional gowns and are generally custom-made to the same length as the gown’s train. These veils can also be worn with floorlength gowns to add formality.
Unveiling THE TRADITION OF VEILING BRIDES MAY HAVE ITS ORIGINS FROM CENTURIES AGO BUT MODERN WOMEN CONTINUE TO EMBRACE THE TIMELESS PRACTICE. SHEPPARTON BUSINESS MICHELE’S BRIDAL AND FORMAL WEAR PROPRIETOR MICHELLE PENNISI SAID THERE WERE ENDLESS OPTIONS FOR BRIDES WHEN CHOOSING THE VEIL TO COMPLEMENT THEIR DREAM WEDDING GOWN.
BRIDE AND GROOM ASKED MICHELLE FOR SOME TIPS. Q. Are veils still relevant for modern brides? A. Definitely. Your wedding day is probably the only time in your life you will have the opportunity to wear a veil, it signifies a special event.
Q. What are veils made from? A. Veils are made from soft bridal tulle, which is lighter than the traditional tulle dress fabric. Veils can be custom-made to any length, to complement any style of wedding gown and can be simple in design or embellished with lace, crystals, pearls or Russian braid.
Fingertip-length veils are perhaps the most popular and complement gowns with or without a train. They are ideal for gowns with embellished skirts as the veil ends before the decoration begins.
Q. Should you choose your veil or hairstyle first? A. Brides should probably consult their hairdresser first as certain styles won’t suit a veil; although most hairstyles can be adapted to accommodate a veil.
Q. Is the tradition of wearing a veil over the face still followed? A. The majority of my brides don’t wear a veil over their face, but depending on the style of the wedding, some do. We have singletier veils for brides who don’t want their faces covered or we have tiered veils on separate clips so tiers can be easily removed after the ceremony.
Q. Should brides consider how long they will wear the veil for? A. Heavily embellished veils can be quite heavy for all day wear, if you’re planning to wear the veil the entire day it’s better to opt for a lighter veil. If you have a veil that is very special to you, perhaps a family heirloom, you would probably want to wear it all day.
Shoulder-length or slightly longer veils work well with tea-length gowns to create a stylish, classic look, perfect for a morning or informal outdoor wedding.
Q. Are bridal veils usually worn with decorative hair pieces? A. Veils are often worn with ornamental hair pieces or fresh flowers, so even if the veil is removed during the day the hair glamour is retained. BRIDE & GROOM 67

edding cakes can be remarkable works of art reflective of the bridal couple’s personalities, style and sense of tradition. The cutting of the cake by the bride and groom, usually at the wedding reception, is a symbolic gesture and almost as well photographed as the first kiss as husband and wife. There are no rules when it comes to style or design; wedding cakes range from individual cupcakes to single-tiered cakes dressed with fresh flowers to multi-layered, gold-dusted towers of edible delight. The wedding cake is usually sliced and packaged in small bags for guests to take home. Alternatively, the cake can be served during the dessert course or with coffee later in the evening. Tradition dictates you keep the top tier of your cake to celebrate your first wedding anniversary or the birth of your first child, but as with all things modern, this may no longer be relevant to some couples.
Cake trends and tips Shape: Classic round cakes are making a comeback this year. A popular trend is to have tiers of varying heights instead of standard-sized layers. Similar decoration ties the different tiers together and creates an almost whimsical, unstructured cake. Flavour: Traditional fruit cake is still popular with brides, particularly if a layer of the cake is to be kept beyond the wedding day, but the season can also dictate the cake flavour. Consider light lemon or sponge cake for spring and summer weddings and rich, decadent chocolate for cooler seasons. Better yet, indulge yourself by having different flavours for different layers. Texture: Smooth iced cakes were the only option a generation ago but now soft-textured butter-cream icings can be applied to give a romantic, ruffled effect to your cake. Again the combination of contrasting icing finishes on different cake layers can be very effective. Colour: Traditionally a wedding cake is iced in white with fresh, silk or edible flowers, piping, ribbon and other adornments reflecting the signature colour scheme of the wedding. If colour matching is important to you, take a sample of your bridesmaids’ dress fabric or photos of your bouquet flowers when you meet with your cake decorator. Alternatively, cake layers can be decorated in varying shades from the same colour palette. Unfrosted: Unfrosted or ‘naked’ wedding cakes fit well with the rustic style wedding theme. Layers of cake joined with cream and fresh fruit and decorated with masses of seasonal flowers and foliage can be a great choice for the bride who has a family member or friend volunteer to make the cake. Metallic: The rise in popularity of metallic embellishments continues. Lustrous gold and silver tones identify the cake as a special occasion piece, perfect for a wedding celebration. Ribbon, edible paints, piped icing and gold dust can add a shimmering finish to your cake.

eautiful blooms are an important element on your wedding day and the colour and style of your flowers reflects the formality and theme of the occasion. From the simplest romantic beach-side ceremony to an elegant, traditional exchange of marriage vows in a church, the bridal bouquet and floral decorations allow brides to express their individuality. With endless options available, Shepparton business Simply Stems’ floral stylists Nicole Henderson and Amy Wallace offer the following advice when planning your dream displays.
Luxurious Modern brides are being influenced by celebrity weddings that feature luxurious floral creations. Statement floral installations, such as flower walls and arbours create beautiful visual displays for the ceremony and reception. Cost is obviously a consideration, but today’s brides are allocating more of their budget to floral decorations as well as bridal party bouquets and boutonnieres. Desired flowers that may be out of season or expensive can often be interchanged with more affordable varieties that still allow the vision to be achieved.
Colour From invitations to place settings, bridesmaids’ dresses and flowers, your signature colour can be the one common thread that ties all elements of the day together. Simply Stems’ staff suggest choosing your specific colour theme first to help streamline planning. The 2015 Pantone color of the year marsala is a wine tone reflected in carnations, roses, alstroemeria and leucadendron, which complements many colour schemes from soft grey through to various shades of pink. If you opt for a classic neutral bouquet, stem wrapping can introduce your individual colour choice.
Trends Trends are important and give brides inspiration while allowing them to have their own input to personalise their wedding day. The rustic trend of recent years is shifting to a more classic, refined styling of flowers and metallic wrap and ribbon, to finish the stems, is gaining in popularity to match the use of copper, brass or silver vases and flower holders. Wrist posies for bridesmaids (see page 99) and flower girls are practical and fit with a vintage look. Spray roses, orchids and lisianthus are suitable flowers for wrist posies. element of sentimentality attached to them. A certain flower or foliage can represent a significant person in the bridal couple’s lives or an intimate reminder of an important occasion. Pieces of jewellery, fabric or photo frame charms, encasing precious memories are just some of the commemorative items that can be woven into bouquets.

BOUQUET STYLES Classic posy The traditional classic posy is a structured creation best formed by roses, peony roses, David Austin roses and lisianthus.
Cascade A cascade arrangement is a modern take on the teardrop bouquet and utilises foliage including gum, fern and tropical leaves as a backdrop for larger flowers such as lilies, orchids and lisianthus.
Sheath Sheaths of flowers often comprise the same variety of flower en masse. Long-stem roses, calla lillies, orchids and foliage are arranged to be carried resting along the bride’s arm.
Relaxed The relaxed bouquet is a loose collection of romantic flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, lisianthus, waxflowers and gypsophila.

Wedding NAIL IT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY WITH BEAUTIFULLY MANICURED FINGERTIPS.
BRIDE AND GROOM SPOKE TO BEAUTY THERAPIST JESS BRUCE FROM GLOSS HAIR AND BEAUTY BOUTIQUE, SHEPPARTON, FOR TIPS ON HOW TO LOOK POLISHED FROM YOUR THUMB TO YOUR TOE. Acrylic nails Jess believed acrylic nails had lost popularity. “In my opinion it’s fading out,” she said. “I think it is very harmful for the nail.” “Even one application of acrylic nails can destroy the nail bed,” she said. “To repair itself it can take six months for the nail to reach the fresh root of the nail.”
Gel nails Jess uses Bio Sculpture Gel on her clients, which is a formula designed to go on the natural nail. “The fantastic thing of the gel is that it naturally bends and grows with the nails,” she said. “There are different gels for different nail beds such as short nails, long nail or weak nails. It’s great for when a client is trying to grow or strengthen their nails.” She recommended brides who had short or weak nails who wanted to grow and strengthen them to start gel applications six months prior to the wedding date. “It’s not a one application fix — it’s a period of six months to get the natural nail where you want it to be,” she said. “It’s like your hair or your skin when you start treating your hair or start getting facials.”
Shellac nails Jess said shellac was introduced after gel and is a gel-based polish. “It’s the same sort of procedure — we have to cure it under a lamp,” she said. “Shellac is like a gel, you put it on the natural nail and you do not do tips. “It’s not as expensive so it would be good for a bride on a budget.” She said shellac was also a good option for a bride who was already happy with their natural nails. “Shellac can’t be built up and made thicker as we could with gels,” she said. “But overall, both options are great and we have a lot of colours to choose from.”
Trends Jess said the current colour trend for brides was nude and avoiding bright colours such as red or purple. She advised against long nails and traditional French nails. “French nails have always been a bridal nail but I don’t find that as popular these days,” she said. “If I do a French, I might do a little bit of glitter to make it a bit more modern. “I love jazzing it up a bit with some gold foil, sequins, diamanties — but I don’t go overboard.” Jess said while some brides have a bit of fun with nails, most brides chose a conservative look for their wedding day.
Preparation tips •
• • • •
If you want to strengthen and grow your nails but a six-month gel procedure is out of your budget, use a nail hardener (Jess’ favourite is Dr Lewinn’s). A nail hardener is also recommended when you have an occupation that doesn’t allow gel or polish. Use a cuticle oil every day or as often as you can, Jess recommends twice a day. Watch what you do at home — wash the dishes with gloves and watch what chemicals are on your hands. Get the look you want for your wedding day one or two days prior. BRIDE & GROOM 81

– who pays for what? THE EXCITEMENT OF BEING NEWLY ENGAGED AND PLANNING YOUR LIVES TOGETHER CAN QUICKLY BE TEMPERED BY THE FINANCIAL REALITY OF ORGANISING YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
R
esearch suggests the average Australian wedding costs between $30 000 and $40 000 and for couples who already have monetary obligations such as a mortgage or HECS debt, or who have a low income or are on one income, adjustments will need to be made. Tradition dictates the bride’s family pays for the bulk of the wedding expenses, but with the majority of couples marrying in 2015 being financially independent of their families, this scenario may no longer be applicable. The total cost will depend on the style of wedding you want. A casual outdoor ceremony at home followed by a cocktail-style function at a small restaurant will be significantly more affordable than a five-course sit-down dinner for 200 guests at a formal reception venue. Communication is the key, between the bridal couple and their families, bearing in mind at all times that the wedding day is a celebration of love and no-one should be forced to contribute more than they can afford. Once you’ve set your total budget you can start obtaining quotes; you may have to settle for less expensive alternatives in order to afford the items that are so important you will not compromise on. Sharing wedding costs between the couple and both families is becoming increasingly common. Listed are several options modern couples are using: • Work out a price per head for the total wedding cost or wedding reception and suggest each side pay for the guests they invite. In this instance no party should feel they have over contributed. • If the couple pays for their own wedding each family could offer to pay for a specific item as a gift; the bride’s family might pay for her wedding gown and the groom’s family for the honeymoon. • The couple’s families share the cost of the wedding reception and the bride and groom pay all other expenses. • Costs are calculated and split equally three ways between the soonto-be-wed couple, the bride’s family and the groom’s family. If you are fortunate enough to have the traditional approach offered, the general expenses incurred by each family are:
