FROM THE EDITOR IN 2020 COVID-19 CREATED CHAOS FOR COUPLES PLANNING WEDDINGS, FOR WEDDING PLANNERS, DRESSMAKERS, CHURCHES, RECEPTION VENUES, FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND THE PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO WOULD RECORD IT ALL.
Twelve months down the track and COVID-19 considerations are fast becoming part of our daily routines — albeit a really annoying part. But with vaccinations now sweeping the country the signs are finally there that we can see some light at the end of the tunnel and start planning weddings with a little more confidence (and awareness of the need for Plans B, C and possibly D). Just getting this important annual publication together is a big enough challenge but that pales in comparison with the emotional investment that goes into planning a wedding and, yes, let’s admit it, the stress too. I’ve been through some of that — not as the bride but close enough that I knew exactly what had gone into the fixed smiles on the wedding party’s faces as they gathered before their celebrant. Fortunately once you have got that far those fixed smiles quickly widen into grins once the ‘I do’ part is done. At its core the wedding day is all about the couple’s life together which traditionally begins on that day — and what could be better to celebrate? And even though they all arrive at that ‘I do’ moment, the way wedding couples arrive there is as varied as the people themselves. Long gone is the time-honoured 12-month engagement; eloping is trending for couples of all ages, with friends and family first getting the good news via social media before a celebration event some time after the runaway bride (and groom) get home. In this issue of Bride & Groom we take a look at the venues on offer at the destination wedding location, the photography considerations you didn’t know you needed to make and how timing is everything when it comes to caring for you skin. We also dive into a few real weddings hosted this year in the area. These brides went through the difficulties of delaying their ‘I dos’ — a decision many of you would be dealing with now. We hope by sharing their stories it helps you deal with a few delay-driven curveballs of your own. Eight years on, the spark is still alive and well, flickering through a global pandemic and a postponed wedding. After having their original spring wedding shifted to summer because of COVID-19 restrictions at the time, the couple got to say ‘I do’ under the glow of the afternoon sun on the Port of Echuca, with native gums lining the Murray River as a backdrop. While they were flexible about some aspects of the big day, Marni said there were a few non-negotiables when it came to fulfilling her rustic theme. One of those was the reception venue — Radcliffe’s. “If we had to change the date to suit their availability I would have, there was no way I was giving it up,” she said. The conservatory garden of Radcliffe’s, covered floor to ceiling in verdant vines sheltered by a transparent roof, surrounded the guests with an aura of nature. Enhancing
the native tones, fairy lights twinkled across the room, complementing the ‘The Harrys’ neon sign gifted by the bridal party. Long wooden tables were a welcome addition, encouraging guests to mingle and celebrate the day together. “No matter where you are on long tables, you’re in on the action. You get to sit across from so many people, but also with so many people,” Marni said. “If you didn’t know people, you got to know them.” From the very start, Marni had a secret wish for her day: to see Lewis cry as she walked down the aisle. Making the grand entrance with her father by her side, the bride felt overwhelmed with emotion, but she wasn’t the only one. “I looked up at Lewis, and I could literally see his bottom lip drop and quiver. We got to the end of the aisle, and the way he hugged my dad was so lovely. Everyone just cried,”
Marni said. The couple was framed by a gold hexagonal bower while they made their vows, seamlessly fitting with the theme of soft burgundies, rusts and oranges used throughout the day. With 135 guests, the wedding fell in a sweet spot between lockdowns, in a time where the gratitude of seeing loved ones was at an all-time high. “We were all just overcome with emotions,” Marni said. “The main thing that stands out is the love that filled the room. “Being allowed out, celebrating together, everyone (had been) locked in for so long. Everybody just appreciated it so much. “It was such an emotional day.”

LOVE IS CERTAIN. THE REST, NOT SO MUCH WHEN MY PARTNER GOT DOWN ON ONE KNEE IN THE SURREAL LANDSCAPE OF STRATHMERTON’S CACTUS COUNTRY IN MAY, I WAS SO SURPRISED I FELT A BIT SICK.
Although I had no hesitation saying yes, a sense of joy and excitement didn’t bubble up until I realised it didn’t matter that we couldn’t plan the wedding or any other aspect of our future yet. Rigel and I have been together for six years, and we spent most of 2020 holed up in a Melbourne apartment; it was just the two of us for days, then weeks, then months on end, working and studying in what we realised was a very poorly insulated building. The experience made us closer, fortunately. We often spoke about the fact we might never get to spend so much quality time together again, once the world reopened and we returned to busy, conflicting schedules. 10 // bride and groom
Living through a catastrophic time in global history also forced us to think about the kind of future we wanted, as individuals and as a couple. We realised that in order to follow our own dreams we would have to spend time apart. So when I packed up about a year ago and moved interstate to pursue a career in journalism we felt prepared and I had Rigel’s full support. Regular border closures meant we often had no idea when we’d next be able to see one another. Video chats are better than a phone call, but nothing can replace ‘real life’. Things became a little easier when I moved back to Victoria, cutting the drive-time to see one another from seven to two hours.
But we still spend more time apart than together, and we have no idea when that will change. Budding journos are trained to ask five questions: what, when, where, why and how? When Rigel asked me to marry him I only knew the answer to one of those questions. The why was clear, but the rest were — and still are — impossible to answer. But that’s okay. Approaching the end of the second year of the pandemic, I’m getting better at accepting ambiguity, uncertainty and big twists and turns in my path. The world will keep turning and we will still love each other no matter what, when, where and how our wedding happens.

READY TO WELCOME YOU MOAMA RSL’S NEW FUNCTION ROOM IS WAITING PATIENTLY TO HOST WEDDING CELEBRATIONS.
“COVID has certainly affected weddings and functions as a whole,” Moama RSL functions manager Sharon Freer said. The Poppies on Merool function room was opened last year, and while it has hosted a number of corporate events, the new space has yet to welcome newlyweds and their loved ones. “It’s just a beautiful new space with a gorgeous bar,” Sharon said. The room can host 200 guests for a sit-down reception or up to 320 people for a relaxed cocktail function. The main feature of the function room is the long stone bar that runs across on side of the room. Along with the dance floor and stage, Poppies on Merool has the perfect foundations for a wonderful night. “When you walk into the Poppies space, it’s so bright and airy,” Sharon said. “You can do anything with it, really, you can make it your own.”
With a combination of the club’s wedding decorations for hire and the couple’s own supplies, Poppies on Merool can be transformed to suit any aesthetic. Add a few wine barrels and native flowers to create a rustic, country atmosphere; or, classic lilies or roses complementing delicate draping fabric and fairy lights can create a beautiful white wedding in the space. The club’s wedding packages and catering options are also tailored to suit the bride and groom. Food-wise, formal three-course meals, casual canapés and grazing platters are among the options. “If there’s something specific our guests want, our chefs are amazing so they can cater to anything that anyone needs,” Sharon said. According to Sharon, Moama RSL’s ability to cater to all requests sets it apart from other venues. The team members pride themselves on their service experience with large
functions, and their flexibility when it comes to hosting weddings. “We’re happy to work with what the bride and groom want specifically,” she said. “It’s their day; what they need and what they require is the most important thing.” Moama RSL’s flexibility also extends to bookings, especially during the uncertainty of COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns. If circumstances change, the RSL offers full refunds or can reschedule to a new date. Sharon sympathises with those couples struggling to find a date. “We’ve had to move our wedding, so I totally understand what it’s like to be in this situation,” she said. UNIQUE AMBIENCE ADDS TO THE EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF ECHUCA, RADCLIFFE’S IS THE EXPERT AT CELEBRATING LOVE
From enchanting affairs to intimate gatherings, owner and functions co‑ordinator for the venue Rebecca Mitchell said there were two things that set Radcliffe’s apart from the rest when it came to hosting weddings. One of them is the conservatory; the other is its central location. “Our conservatory is a very unique spot,” Rebecca said. Unique is a good way to put it. The conservatory’s glass roof means the live vines in the room bring the outside in, giving the room a fairytale feel. The vines begin growing in August and are in their prime until March or April. “That’s when they start to change their colours into the autumn colours,” Rebecca said. “It adds a whole different atmosphere to the room.” Atmosphere is important for any good soiree, which is why the optimally located venue is ideal for weddings — guests spending a couple of days in the area will
find themselves within walking distance from everything in town. “They can walk to the ceremony, walk to the reception here at Radcliffe’s, and walk back to their accommodation,” Rebecca said. Together with her husband Adam, Rebecca has run the business for almost a decade — including managing the Port 53 restaurant, hosting functions in their dedicated spaces and catering for events at other locations — meaning they can offer a range of services on a couple’s special day. “If you have another venue, then we can bring the food to anywhere, really,” Rebecca said. Radcliffe’s offers three main catering options for weddings: three-course meal; buffet; and canapes. If you’re planning a low-key reception, the finger-food option is always popular. “Our chefs hand make all of the fingerfood so everything is made from scratch,” Rebecca said. “Guests can mingle a little bit more as the staff have roaming canapes.”
With enough food for seconds and the option to pick and choose your meal, the buffet is also a firm favourite and will ensure no-one goes hungry on the night. “It’s not like they get one plate of food in front of them and that’s what they’re stuck with for the night,” Rebecca said. “Guests can choose what they want, and how much they want of it.” The entire venue can hold up to 400 people, ideal for couples with big families unable to make their guest list any shorter. As a result, Radcliffe’s has catered for many big weddings, including various traditions and entertainment. “We’ve had Greek weddings, where they’ve been smashing plates,” Rebecca said. “We’ve had another wedding with a big, big family and they had pyrotechnics here. “They had fireworks and smoke machines and all that sort of stuff inside the building, which was quite special.” Visit radcliffes.com.au for more information about its wedding packages. bride and groom // 15

GOT IT COVERED, RAIN OR SHINE RAIN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY IS STILL WIDELY VIEWED AS A GOOD SIGN AND THE BEGINNING OF A STRONG MARRIAGE. BUT FOR SOME, WET WEATHER CAN WASH OUT ALL PLANS FOR AN OUTDOOR CEREMONY.
With this in mind, Kalli Crump and her partner Adam Smith have mastered the art of improvisation when it comes to outdoor weddings at the Timbercutter restaurant in Mathoura. “The area inside and on the deck is so big that if everything needed to be moved, it’s an easy transition,” Kalli said. The restaurant overlooks the junction of the Murray and Edward rivers. Kalli and Adam wanted to celebrate the timber industry that built the Mathoura area, and the surroundings. “We love the timber industry and what it’s done for the region,” Kalli said. Kalli and Adam bought the 323 hectare property bordered by the rivers more than 20 years ago. After a family member suggested that the area would be perfect for a venue, they 16 // bride and groom
decided to build the restaurant. “Mum joked that we should put a café or something down there because it’s such a lovely spot,” Kalli said. The Timbercutter has a permanent wooden arbour that stands close to the river junction, surrounded by tall gum trees. If inclement weather threatens, the celebration can just as easily take place on the red gum deck at the back of the venue. “It’s still just as picturesque, but we don’t have any issues with organising shelter to go up over the arbour area either,” Kalli said. However, they’ve only had to relocate a wedding to the deck once in the eight years since the venue opened its doors. If the weather forecast isn’t looking good, Kalli just suggests guests bring their umbrellas. “We’ve had one wedding where they all had
umbrellas, and the photos were just fabulous,” she said. After the ceremony, the reception can take place at the restaurant and bar. The venue can seat about 150 guests inside and can accommodate even more out on the deck. “We feel very lucky that people choose here to have such a significant event in their life,” Kalli said. “We love to be able to share it with them and make it as special as we can.” Scheduling your outdoor wedding in the warmer seasons, when it’s less likely to be rained out, is the top tip for planning a wedding at the Timbercutter. The venue is closed to the public for a few months over winter but things get up and running again in August. First established in the 19th century, the Junction has a rich history of hospitality in the Twin Towns. Appropriately named, the Junction sits at the intersection between the Murray and Campaspe rivers. What began as the humble Junction Inn is now the union of “timeless elegance and modern sophistication”. “He’s always super-excited about a challenge and is constantly coming up with these new concepts,” Marie-Claire said. Richard’s newest venture is ‘High Cheese’, a fromage-filled take on the Junction’s classic high tea catering option. A selection of cheeses and accompaniments replace the traditional finger sandwiches, scones, and sweet treats — sure to satisfy any turophile. Junction’s “epic” selection of T2 teas and a glass of sparkling wine on arrival are included in both. Junction hosts these refined meals in the circular lounge, a stunning function room fit to cater for 28 people in a sit-down function or up to 40 for a cocktail party, and boasts elegance befitting royalty. The high tea or high cheese (whichever you prefer) is a sophisticated choice for a classic upcoming wedding celebration. Marie-Claire said she had been organising the popular high teas for bridal showers since Junction first began crafting the delicate finger food.
“It’s lovely, lush with plenty of food, sparkling bubbles, and a lot of laughter.” The antipasto grazing table is another popular option for wedding parties, serving different cheeses, meats, nuts, and various other hors-d’oeuvres. “It’s such a great centre-piece,” MarieClaire said. “People can graze on it throughout the night, it’s such a great focal point.” Accompanying the extensive menu is, of course, a long beverage list. Along with the classic beers and spirits comes a plethora of locally sourced wines and house-made cocktails. Venue manager Sean Funston has strong experience and expertise in wine. His position has seen all the staff at Junction undergo wine training to provide the best experience for guests. “The wine list he’s put together at the moment is really new and exciting,” MarieClaire said.

“He knows his wine inside-out and upsidedown.” Many of the wines on the list showcase the region’s best “complemented by the world’s premium spirits”. Junction’s food and wine experience is all provided in its picturesque venue by the Murray. The unique collection of function rooms are as elegant as their descriptions sound, and can cater for weddings with up to 300 guests. The venue’s licensing means it can only welcome guests over the age of 18. As a result, the Junction is best suited to host the engagement party or rehearsal dinner. Even, Marie-Claire says, the dinner to introduce the parents to each other. “It was the first time his parents were meeting her parents,” she explained of a dinner catered for by the Junction. “They came in, had a beautiful dinner, a few laughs, got the cocktails going.
“By the end, everyone left best friends.” Along with the circular lounge, the wine room offers an intimate setting for a small reception hosting up to 80 guests. For larger parties, there’s the upper level with its own bar. For summer events, there’s also the deck that can be included when hosting from the upper level or the circular lounge. “We’re just in such a gorgeous, beautiful setting,” Marie-Claire said. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can even take advantage of the Junction’s in-house DJs to deliver the soundtrack Junction is renowned for. “You’re almost getting a free DJ, really,” Marie-Claire said. “They play that sort of cool, funky background music that we are so well known for.” Junction has catered for many weddings, both traditional and less so. One ceremony for the marriage of a couple in their 80s was very moving for the staff at the venue.
“It was just the most beautiful, sweet thing I’ve ever seen,” Marie-Claire said. “There was just so much love in the room.” At another wedding at Junction, the bride’s magnificent dress was so voluminous, it didn’t fit behind the bridal table. Marie-Claire said that after a few moments of panic, they managed to “tame the dress”. “This dress was just epic, it had layers upon layers,” she said. CAPTURING THE MAGIC MOMENTS WEDDINGS ARE ALL ABOUT THE TIMING.
It’s about time he proposed. Then it’s about what time of year you want the wedding. Finally, of course, you’ve got to get to the church on time (and/or the venue of your choice). And no-one gets this timing travail better than your wedding photographer — just ask Love By Shae Photography’s Monica McQuitty. She has been able to break wedding photo times down to a very simple choice of two — the golden hour or the blue hour. Monica says the golden hour comes just before sunset — the sun low in the sky, bathing the wedding party in its warm light. It’s a brief opportunity, but one that can be timed almost down to the second, which the professionals behind the lens call ‘the magic moment’. Blue hour, Monica explains, comes hot on the heels of the golden hour, when the sun has slipped below the horizon — its last fingers of light creating the perfect backdrop for silhouette settings, and that indirect blue light which will bathe the scene in the softest of natural lights. “Both occasions come and go very quickly and you have to be ready to go the second the light begins to change or you might just miss it,” Monica says. 24 // bride and groom
“It’s not actually an hour, that’s a bit of photography’s version of poetic licence. “So just like the rest of the occasion, timing is everything. “When I help my couples plan their wedding day timelines, I always consider how the light (and daylight saving) might impact their wedding photos — even the time of year and your geographic location will impact that.” As you would expect in the digital era, Monica has an app that tells her months in advance what time the sun will set on each client’s wedding day, and when the golden and blue hours will appear. Knowing well in advance when the light will change is integral to making sure couples aren’t racing through the day just to make sure they aren’t up against the light. “I’m obsessed with capturing the memories that mean the most to my couples and turning them into beautiful images they can re-live (and re-love) forever,” Monica says. “If my couples decide to have a later ceremony, say at 4 pm or 5 pm, then I would always check to see if a ‘first look’ may be an option due to having enough light for their photos (especially outside daylight saving hours when the sun sets earlier). “The first look is where a couple plan to see each other before the ceremony — which
allows them to share a special moment together in a more private setting. “Traditionally, most couples waited until the ceremony for that; but the private prequel is becoming more popular, particularly outside of daylight saving.” Monica says the third timing option, which not many have on their agenda before she meets with the couple, is night photography — where technology, not the sun or moon, makes the difference and she says it has some serious “wow factor”. “They are always impressive, and all my couples fall in love with them.” Monica also believes engaging a professional makes the whole day easier — letting you plan it the way you want and letting the photographer build a plan around the couple’s wishes. She says couples deserve to be taken care of by an experienced wedding photography professional to minimise any stress or interruptions to a day that is all about them. “Capturing all those memories has been elevated to an artform by professional photographers — a skill only acquired after years of experience — and that’s why getting a professional is an investment, not an expense; because you only get one shot at it and a professional photographer always gets the shot.”

HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS KAYLA AND LUKE DIDN’T LET A RECENTLY HEALED ANKLE GET IN THE WAY OF CELEBRATING THEIR LOVE — OR PERFORMING THE DANCE ROUTINE FROM THE MOVIE DIRTY DANCING.
“The day was literally perfect,” Kayla said. “We kind of went off tradition and we did whatever we felt we wanted to do.” Their stunning outdoor ceremony at Echuca’s Aquatic Reserve was followed by an equally magical reception at Radcliffe’s. “I didn’t really have a specific thing to stick to, it was just super ‘us’,” Kayla said. The altar was defined by a wooden arbour made for the occasion, adorned with flowers that perfectly matched the bohemian theme. “We had vintage, mix-matched chairs, and rugs down the aisle,” she said. The ceremony was a real family affair. Kayla’s dad officiated the wedding while her father-in-law walked her down the aisle. Luke and Kayla’s two children were both part of the wedding party as well. Six-year-old Seth was the ringbearer, and two-year-old Mia was the flower girl, but she brought her favourite bunny rabbit down the aisle instead. “It was just nice to have the kids involved,”
Kayla said. At the reception, the couple took the chance to perform a decoy first dance, before surprising their family and friends later in the night with a routine to The Time of My Life from the film Dirty Dancing. The steps did have to be somewhat modified with the help of Excell Dance Centre in Shepparton after Kayla broke her ankle at her hen’s party. She spent the weeks leading up to the big day strapped in a moonboot, and Luke was left to perfect the routine himself while she recovered. “Luke pretty much had to do eight lessons mostly by himself, and I had four,” Kayla said. “We drunkenly practised the lift the week before and the night before the wedding.” The lift wasn’t exactly like the movie, but Luke went all out with his portrayal of Patrick Swayze. “He did his little Swayze solo, which was
adorable,” Kayla said. The couple wasn’t ready for the night to end when the reception did, and organised an afterparty for those who wanted to continue the celebrations. It’s something Kayla recommends to those planning their wedding now. “I’d suggest to everyone to do that, because 11.30 is a bit too early,” she said. “It just made the wedding go that little bit longer.” For Kayla and Luke, it was the small details that made their wedding special, including the small mishaps. “Everyone always says their wedding’s the best, but that’s just how I feel,” Kayla said with a laugh.

And for those tying the knot in 2021, it’s time to kiss goodbye the ‘casual affair’ of chinos and sports jackets and wave hello to the elegant future of the classic tailored suit and tie. The return to a more traditional wedding suit is part of a swing in the trend cycle from the casual look from a few years ago. Joe Paul Menswear co‑owner Joe Care said most grooms who visited the store did their research (or their fiancée did) before they arrived. “Whether it’s heavily influenced by their partners, I don’t know,” he said with a laugh. “I think a lot of guys just tend to Google and see what the latest trends are.” Two years ago, a combination of tan chinos, white shirt, with a blue sports jacket was the choice “eight out of 10 times”. Now, blue suits are the overwhelming trend for the groom and groomsmen.
“In one weekend we booked in six wedding parties for October,” Joe said. “And they’ve all been suits, which I was really surprised about.” The colour palette has been following traditional seasonal trends. Blues and navy are popular choices during the cooler months, matched with tan shoes and a tan belt to tie the outfit together. For spring and summer weddings, Joe said the preference was for greys and other lighter colours. “I tend to find greys are more for your summer, and then blues are pretty much all year round,” he said. These colours tend to be paired with brown or tan shoes. For blue and navy, brown can brighten up the outfit. For lighter colours, the footwear adds definition to the look. “Black shoes we tend to normally sell with a black suit,” Joe said.
“But if you’re doing a blue suit, you always accessorise with a tan or brown pair of shoes and a matching belt.” Accessories like ties, cufflinks and pocket squares are where the groom adds the finishing touches to the suit. Ties are still the most popular choice among men to finish their classic look and is the point of difference between the groom and groomsmen. “If you’re a little bit more braver, you’ll do your bow-tie,” Joe said. “Groomsmen attire complements the bridesmaid dresses, and then normally the groom will try and work with the bride.” Tie bars or cufflinks are common gifts for the groomsmen, and they add some personality to the outfits. “(The gift) kind of resonates with the groom,” Joe said. bride and groom // 45

But we have to forgive women for overlooking this most important of pre-wedding steps. With a schedule as long as a pre-COVID-19 guest list, it’s near-on impossible to remember a skin care routine — especially since, when it’s done right, that routine can begin six and sometimes even 12 months before the bride says “I do”. So why not put the stress of planning into someone else’s hands? Enter Endota Spa, Echuca. The team on High St has been providing skin care recommendations for so long, it’s second nature. But manager Jacinta Cannon said it was more than just handing over creams, or booking in facials. “We take clients on a journey,” she said. “We have a lot of brides that start working on their skin six to 12 months out from their wedding. “It starts with looking at someone’s skin, doing a consult then determining what it is they are trying to achieve. “Then we take them on a journey.” Jacinta said Endota Spa offered a range of treatments for every skin type, starting with enriching facials, as well as LED therapy, hydro-microdermabrasion and electro-mesotherapy. “But the most important thing anybody can do, is do the work at home,” Jacinta said. “We might see them every six weeks, but they’re working on their skin every day at home.” Jacinta said her team also offered skin analysis to give clients exactly what a bride’s skin was craving. From there, the team gives advice on products and treatments. “We pop you in a skin scanner, which takes photos at all different levels,” Jacinta said. “That allows us to see what’s going on underneath.” She said a popular treatment was electro-mesotherapy, which plumped skin cells to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. And the best part is it only takes 30 minutes. “It’s a really good hack to make sure the skin is at its best for the day of the wedding,” Jacinta said. Failing that, there’s always a massage or body treatment to calm the nerves. “Get a body treatment, have a nice infusing wrap,” Jacinta said. “Anything that’s going to help relax and feel great is ultimately going to be a good result.” The rest, Jacinta said, would be written all over the bride’s face when she walked down the aisle — cool and calm, with a perfect complexion. 46 // bride and groom

PANDEMIC CHANGES WEDDING PERSPECTIVE WHEN GRACE ANGEL IMAGINES HER WEDDING, WHICH IS TWO WEEKS AWAY, THERE ARE ONLY TWO PEOPLE SHE KNOWS WILL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT — HERSELF AND HER SOON-TO-BE HUSBAND, TODD CURTIS.
After being forced to cancel their wedding twice in the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Echuca couple has decided to get married on their third chosen date — November 1 — regardless of whether they’re allowed to have guests. Depending on the rules in place at the time, the wedding reception might be an intimate gathering of no more than 10, a joyous party of 80 people on the dancefloor, or simply the bride and groom savouring their first few hours of married life alone. “At one stage we actually sat down and said, ‘What do we want in a wedding?’,” Grace says, recalling a conversation in March 2020. “I said, ‘I want my family and friends, I want to be in my dress — ideally without wearing a mask — and I want to dance.’ “Now I’m like, you know what? That’s the least of my worries.” It’s not that Grace no longer wants those things — she seriously wants to hit the dancefloor with her bridal party on her special day. But she’s more concerned about the safety and health of her friends, family and community. 48 // bride and groom
“Now I just want everyone to be vaccinated, ideally,” she says. Grace jokes that Todd might end up getting his dream wedding, which is a bit quieter than the big party she hopes for. “Todd, however, is the opposite to me — he said, ‘I want my family and friends, I want beer, and I want you to be happy — I just want you to have a good time’,” Grace says. Todd proposed to Grace in late 2019, and the excited couple managed to squeeze in an engagement party in March 2020 before the world went into hibernation due to COVID-19. “We had a massive party,” Grace says, recalling the special night. Grace says there’s one part of her that wishes she and Todd had just been married on the spot — they had no idea how badly the virus would affect their ability to gather loved ones together again. “If I had known, we would have just been married there and then,” she says. Soon after Todd got down on one knee Grace was in wedding planner mode, booking an initial date of November 2, 2020, at Mitchelton Winery near Nagambie.
“I got really excited,” she says. Grace was 31 years old at the time, and she imagined she and Todd would start their family shortly after the wedding. The 2020 wedding couldn’t go ahead, and neither did their back-up plan of marrying in March 2021. “It’s been nearly two years since we got engaged — I haven’t been able to get married, I haven’t been able to have the baby I planned,” she said. Despite the heartache, she says the pandemic has made her priorities clear. In a normal year it would be easy for Grace to get caught up in the thrill of planning the day she ties the knot down to the finest detail. But three months before the big day, Grace and Todd hadn’t even been able to send out invitations yet — they still didn’t have enough certainty that the wedding would go ahead. Grace has learned valuable lessons as she and the love of her life navigate choppy, uncharted waters. “It’s about resilience and what’s most important — it’s that you’ve found the partner that you love,” she says.

AFTER MORE THAN A DOZEN YEARS TOGETHER, RACHELLE AND JIMMY’S ROMANCE IS ONE FOR THE AGES.
Engaged in December 2019 in a scene reminiscent of a modern-day rom-com, Rachelle looks back on Jimmy’s proposal fondly. “I was just working on my computer when he wandered in and proposed,” she said. He was so casual, Rachelle “laughed at him” thinking he was joking. But Jimmy was serious, and Rachelle said yes. And in March the couple said ‘I do’ at Billabong Ranch in Echuca, with their wedding day exactly as they had imagined it. From the perfect weather during their outdoor ceremony to the casual country atmosphere and wooden décor of the ranch, the day oozed rustic chic, pulled together by
the classic navy of Rachelle’s bridesmaids’ dresses. After changing their original venue in Moama to Billabong Ranch a few weeks out from the big day, Rachelle said she “took a bit of a chill pill” and hoped for the best. “As soon as we got engaged, I tried to plan everything straight away and it became really stressful,” she said. “It got to the point where I just kept wanting more and more, and it was just getting out of control. “Then we had to move it for COVID, and we were like ‘what’s going to be is going to be’.” The reception continued with the same laid-back spirit of the ceremony and included
a fun-filled first dance along with lots of laughter. Once Rachelle had taken that step back, she was able to enjoy her day. Rachelle’s daughter walked down the aisle before her own “nerve-wracking” entrance, which is now one of the most memorable moments for the couple and their family. “My daughter’s fairly shy and reserved, and she definitely put her big girl shoes on,” Rachelle said. Her one piece of advice for future brides is: enjoy the planning. “I think you just have to relax and take your time.” bride and groom // 51
