FROM THE EDITOR WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK BRIDE AND GROOM MAGAZINE.

We’ve had a little facelift but within these pages you’ll find the same great content — real weddings, planning advice and fashion features. For me it is my first edition as editor and a merging of two passions. While the other boys and girls dreamed of becoming firefighters and vets, when I grew up, I wanted to be a wedding dress designer. I think I can blame watching The Parent Trap on repeat for that. That childhood dream faded and I turned to journalism but I’ve always had a soft spot for weddings. My Year 8 textiles teacher will be glad to hear the closest I’ll ever get to designing a gown is organising a bride and groom photoshoot — get prepared to be blown away with what our creative team has put together from pages 22 and 53. You’ll also find 14 real weddings including our cover couple Sarah Terry and Alistair Jacka which you can read from page 109. Each time a submission lands in my inbox I get a little excited. I love hearing your stories, pouring over the photos and getting to share them with our readers. We have also put together a guide to hosting a wedding at home like Georgia Odgers and Tom Vibert on page 82. Or if you’re looking for something further afield flick to page 87 for our destination wedding feature.

Jessica Ball Editor P.S. After you’ve used this mag to plan your dream wedding don’t forget to submit it for a chance to be featured: bit.ly/brideandgroomsubmissions

THE TREND EDIT

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Photography: Lisa Nardella Photography

Diamonds aren’t always a girl’s best friend. Craig Blizzard from Blizzards Fine Jewellers in Shepparton said while diamonds were by far the best choice for an everyday piece that could be passed down from generation to generation, there were other options for those wanting something a little unique. Coloured diamonds are available but you might have to sell your house to buy an Argyle pink diamond; instead, he suggested a precious gem. “Corundum which is sapphire, ruby – remember you can get yellow sapphires, green sapphires and different shades of rubies,” Craig said. “You can also do different shades of topaz but you might want to do a bezel setting that covers it in.” Craig suggested staying clear from semi-precious stones which simply do not have the durability to live up to day-to-day wear.

FLAT OUT COMFORT Enough blood, sweat and tears have usually been invested in the planning of the all-important day; could this be the reason why some brides are defying the dress code and taking heels out of the equation? It is well known there is a price to pay in the comfort department where heels are concerned. And although heels have been something of a bridal staple for most of history, some brides are challenging the conventional footwear mould and opting for flats. But is it simply a case of comfort over style?

Practicality plays a big factor in the decision, as spending seven hours hiding pain is no longer an expectation for brides. Tan Brewer from Evans Shoes in Shepparton said the choice was usually a case of comfort, however, some customers have another reason altogether. “A few brides-to-be that I have talked to have mentioned that they want a shoe that they can wear more than once,” Tan said. “They don’t just want a glitzy heel that gets thrown to the back of the closet, never to be seen again.”

Photography: The Art of Zowie Photography

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS They’re big and they’re bold and floral installations are the latest wedding statement. Lauren Kiss from Simply Stems Boutique Florist in Shepparton said large arrangements were very popular. “Couples in general are wanting to make flowers the feature decoration, so yes, this coming year you will see more installations and statement pieces.”

NICOLE TAYLOR AND ANDREW CLEAVE SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2018 // MERRIJIG

bride and groom // 11

12 // bride and groom

IT WAS A LOVE STORY THAT BEGAN 35 YEARS AGO.

It was a fun, wild time of life but eventually Nicole Taylor and Andrew Cleave went their separate ways and pursued different lives; until a chance encounter 20 years later brought them back together. When Andrew proposed on Hamilton Island in January 2015, it was no surprise. “He was so nervous I wouldn’t like the ring that he picked me up from work one day and said he really needed to show me something,” Nicole said. “He pulled out the design sketch from Blizzards and said I could open it and wait and see. “I opened it — it was amazing — he did good.” Wedding planning ensued but then Andrew was diagnosed with two life-threatening heart defects and underwent open heart surgery. “Anything wedding stopped and we focused on health,” Nicole said. “It was serious business and came with a

lot of risk. He had some setbacks but came good.” A week after Christmas 2017, one month after surgery, they counted their blessings, and in the following 10 weeks planned the wedding from start to finish. “We said let’s just do it now. However it turns out it’s supposed to be,” Nicole said. Deliberately choosing a long weekend to make the most of their time with their loved ones, the couple curated a relaxed, intimate gathering by the Delatite River that felt as if they were in their own backyard. “A lot of people turned up on the Friday night and had a big dinner together and on the Sunday morning after the wedding everyone met again for a big barbecue breakfast and the after party continued all day and throughout the night,” Nicole said.

There were no pretenses, just raw emotions as Nicole’s son Zachary Taylor who had flown in from New York walked her down the aisle, their oldest children and friends shared powerful readings and they exchanged personal vows. After so many years and so many challenges, there was a lot to say. Post ceremony, friends and family surprised the newlyweds with a helicopter flight to Craig’s Hut – a breathtaking backdrop for their photo session. Despite the tight timeframe, the setting reflected Nicole’s styling flare with hired velvet lounges, items from home, plus a few cheeky purchases coming together to create opulent vintage vibes with a modern twist. The backyard atmosphere was continued with help yourself catering including a DIY taco and slider bar followed by a gourmet barbecue and roving bite-sized desserts.

THE GREAT CAKE DEBATE TRADITIONAL WEDDING CAKES ARE CERTAINLY NOT A THING OF THE PAST, BUT A WAVE OF DELICIOUS CREATIONS ARE TAKING ITS PLACE.

Jenaya Bell from One Sweet Baker said there was an increasing demand for custom desserts such as macarons, cheesecakes, cookies and cake popsicles. With that in mind, here are some wedding cake alternatives that won’t fail to deliver a delightful kick to the taste buds. JENAYA’S CREATIONS

Macarons: The ‘king of French pastries’ has seen a meteoric rise in popularity over the past few years with every boutique bakery and kiosk stocking the mini meringues. The visual appeal in the array of beautiful pastel colours they come in means a technicolour line-up of the light and airy treats is sure to catch the eye of your guests. Cake popsicles: Although it may sound like a fusion of two of the most delectable desserts out there, in essence it is a costeffective, charming way to satisfy your guests. Cake crumbs are mixed with icing and the resulting mixture is shaped into balls. The end product is a no-fuss, low-mess treat that is both mouth-watering and practical. Churros: Ever since coffee has made the

14 // bride and groom

switch from a high frequency bean juice to garnering all sorts of aesthetically pleasing associations, their delicious counterpart has up-scaled in style as well. The Portuguese rendition of a doughnut is a far cry from the traditional tiered cake but will certainly not fail to satisfy guests’ sweet tooths. Cupcakes: The perfect substitute for heavier wedding cakes. The beauty of cupcakes is that they can be baked in different colours and flavours to match any theme. As well as their flexibility in flavour, they can be a great alternative for those with dietary requirements. OTHER IDEAS

‘Cheese cake’: If sweets aren’t your thing, a savoury centrepiece can provide more of a rustic feel if that is what you are searching for. An assortment of fine cheeses assembled in a layered fashion accompanied by crackers and fruit is setting the trend for modern weddings of late. And the kicker for this is they aren’t especially tricky to make, so you can even do it yourself.

Sweet/savoury fondue: While the chocolate fountain scene from Bridesmaids may not inspire much confidence in this idea, it is a fun way to engage guests with the Swiss tradition that is both cultured and delicious. It simply elevates your gathering. Gelato cart: While ice-cream is always hard to beat as a sweet treat, gelato is the fashionable older brother with less fat and more flavour. Whether it is the refreshing kick of a lemon sorbet or the smooth notes of a salted caramel, nothing instantly improves a hot summer day like savouring a scoop or two of gelato. Accompanied with a stylish artisan service cart it can really add panache to your reception. Grazing table: And if you simply cannot come to a conclusion on the ‘sweet or savoury’ debate, why not provide guests with a wide selection of both? A banquet table dressed with fresh fruit, appetisers and cheeseboard essentials are a great way to keep the picky eaters content.

SOMETHING SWEET CAKE MAY BE GREAT BUT WHY NOT TREAT YOUR GUESTS TO A SMORGASBORD OF PETITE DESSERTS?

BLENDING THEIR INDIAN AND AUSTRALIAN HERITAGES CAITLYN SCHULZ AND JOEL PRATHIPATY OPTED TO HAVE NOT ONE BUT TWO WEDDING DAYS.

A year after they were married in the groom’s home town of Guntur in India they celebrated a second ceremony at Noorilim Estate in Murchison. “It was important for us to follow in his family’s traditions but we didn’t want people to feel obligated to travel,” Caitlyn said. “My immediate family made the big trip to witness the marriage, it was a new and beautiful experience for all. “They wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” The first wedding was celebrated in traditional Indian style with more than 900 guests, Caitlyn wore a white lace sari and the couple incorporated cultural customs. In a wedding eve tradition, married loved ones rubbed turmeric on their faces and hands as a symbol of good luck while both families made symbolic gestures during the ceremony to show their support of the marriage.

“It was a bit more intense,” Caitlyn said. “Joel tied a thaali (a yellow cord) around my neck and that represented that I was now his bride. “His parents gave me a rose garland which represented them accepting me as their daughter-in-law.” To mark their one-year anniversary they did it all again but this time in front of 110 guests. “We wanted to celebrate one wedding anniversary and it gave us time to plan,” she said. “Renewing our vows in front of our closest family and friends, it was like we were given this amazing second chance to re-live the emotions of our wedding day while reflecting on our first year as husband and wife.” For the reception the laidback couple created a relaxed festival vibe. All set up in a paddock with open marquee, outdoor dance floor surround by wine

barrels, lounges and food trucks they partied underneath the stars and festoon lighting. Opting out of many formalities for the second wedding their pair chose a romanticturned-fun mash-up for their choreographed first dance. “It started with our original wedding song, Perfect by Ed Sheeran and ended with the famous Carlton Dance and The Sugarhill Gang’s Apache song,” she said. “The idea was to surprise everyone and get our gests involved, which they did and everyone began to get loose and party.” While to incorporate their Indian wedding, 50 of their favioute photos were displayed while beautiful blooms in tones of deep moody burgundies with dusty pink roses, green ivy, peppercorn and gum tied into the natural landscape.

NICOLE BRAY AND MITCHELL TOMASINO WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2018 // LANCASTER

There’s no doubt Nicole Bray and Mitchell Tomasino planned a wedding to the beat of their own drum. An important date set an unconventional plan in motion, with Nicole and Mitchell married on their eighth anniversary, a Wednesday, and the reception celebrated 10 days later. “We started dating on the 10th of the 10th, 2010 — we wanted to keep that date because it was so special,” Nicole said. “We ended up having an extremely intimate ceremony with only immediate family and four of our closest friends, and then having a big, fun party a week later and celebrating with everyone important to us.”

Instead of walking down the aisle, they chose to stand united at their ceremony spot — a tree wrapped with fairy lights and baby’s breath flowers on Nicole’s family property — as their 18 guests walked towards them and took their seats. “We both hate being the centre of attention, so we changed a lot of the formalities so that we could stay out of the limelight as much as possible,” Nicole said. “I remember saying to Mitch I didn’t want to walk down the aisle and he said we needed to think of a cool way to do it and that’s what we came up with. “It was perfect, it was us.” The offbeat bride wore a blue dress with

lace top overlay paired with Vans sneakers. “I found a pair in a beige satin with ribbons for laces — they were much more my style, I’m not a heels person,” she said. A no social media rule ensured the statement gown was kept a surprise for the Melbourne reception, where rather than making a formal entrance as husband and wife they welcomed in each of their guests as they arrived. “The spotlight wasn’t on us at the reception it was just one big party,” Nicole said. “The only formality we kept at the reception were the speeches.”

FLOWERS FOR EVERY SEASON IN YEARS GONE BY PEOPLE KNEW WHICH FLOWERS WERE IN SEASON BY WHAT THEY SAW IN GARDENS, BUT NOW THAT PEOPLE ARE LOOKING TO THE INTERNET FOR INSPIRATION FOR THEIR FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS EXPECTATIONS HAVE CHANGED.

bride and groom chatted to florist Nicole Henderson, from Flowers on Melville in Numurkah, about which flowers are available in each season and how the internet has changed the way brides-to be plan the flowers for their wedding. “The popularity of flowers and designs on social media, and sites such as Pinterest, drives the fashion in bridal flowers,” Nicole said. “Most flowers are now available for longer periods due to artificial growing conditions and the ability to have flowers flown in from around the world if necessary.” Chrysanthemums, roses and carnations are available year-round and come in a huge variety of colours to complete any arrangement. SUMMER

Brides planning a summer wedding can choose tuberoses and dahlias, though the season for dahlias is quite short and can vary by about two weeks from year to year

depending on the weather. Hydrangeas are also in season but they can be prone to wilt if the weather is very hot. Smoke bush, snowberries, delphiniums and goldenrod can offer interesting texture and colour. AUTUMN

Many people prefer to hold their wedding in autumn when they can expect milder weather. Nerines come into season about April. These elegant flowers come in a wide variety of colours and are great for creating colour accents. Traditional daffodils, erlicheer, hyacinths and jonquils come into season in the following months. Popular peony roses can be imported from the Northern Hemisphere summer. WINTER

graceful form and beautiful perfume. They are available throughout winter and into spring. Anemones are a winter flower that can create a bold splash of colour, and poppies, available at this season, have a different but equally eye-catching colour palette. SPRING

Spring is traditionally a favourite time for weddings. Old-fashioned cottage garden blooms such as delphiniums, foxgloves, lilac, lavender and lily of the valley all come into flower at this time of year if a bride is aiming for a traditional look. Copper beech is available through November and December and can add a bold splash of colour or combine well with other foliage and blooms to create a rustic-looking bouquet.

Freesias have always been popular in winter wedding bouquets, for their range of colours, bride and groom // 33

LAURYN BLAKE AND LIAM HERNAN SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2018 // DOOKIE

bride and groom // 35

36 // bride and groom

AS A SELF-CONFESSED TRADITIONALIST THE LAST THING LAURYN BLAKE EXPECTED TO DO ON HER WEDDING DAY WAS WALK DOWN THE AISLE WEARING A BOLD, FLORAL-PATTERNED GOWN.

But that’s exactly what this modern bride did, when she married Liam Hernan in St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dookie. “When I started looking for a wedding dress, this was the one thing I didn’t go in expecting to buy,” Lauryn said. “It was from the Wendy Makin couture range, and couldn’t be bought in store, you had to buy direct from them. Luckily Michelle from Michele’s Bridal was able to pull a few strings and had it shipped to Shepparton for me to try on. “Once the dress caught my eye on Instagram I couldn’t get it out of my head, I tried on others but my mum said my smile was the biggest when I had this one on.” With her decision finalised Lauryn had to rethink her choice for the bridesmaids’ dresses, opting for ivory creations from Shona Joy, instead of the planned navy.

“Liam said he had an inkling I would wear something different, how I don’t know, because not even I knew, he said it was ‘very me’ though,” Lauryn said. Liam and Lauryn, who own their own property, describe the theme of their special day as ‘agri-chic’, with DIY elements giving hints of their farm life. Rousey, the couple’s four-year-old border collie, had a special role to play, walking down the aisle with one of the bridesmaids, with the wedding rings attached to his collar. Lauryn was able to indulge her love for crafts, planning handmade table centrepieces of sticks and origami flowers, printed placemats to replicate wool bags and stained timber signage. “We also had a photo board at the reception, with our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos, we got so

many great comments,” Lauryn said. The cocktail-style reception allowed guests to mingle and indulge Lauryn and Liam’s love of good food with a selection of fine dining finger-food and small plate options. On the menu were cold canapes such as Peking duck pancake, rare roast beef on melba toast with bush tomato chutney, hot canapes including salt and pepper calamari, basil pesto arancini with tomato ragout, Moroccan lamb meatballs, Thai chicken satay skewers, bocconcini sundried tomato pizette, lamb and rosemary gourmet pie, and small plates of hokkien mee and Mediterranean risotto. “We love food, so the food had to be good, we also found it a good way to accommodate any dietary requirements our guests had, and tailor the menu to them so they didn’t feel singled out,” Lauryn said.

STEPHENS JEWELLERS FINE DIAMONDS, ADVICE AND JEWELLERY DESIGN SPECIALISTS Why do some diamonds sparkle more than others? I’m sure at this point you’ve either been told about the 4Cs or read about them online. Ultimately the sparkle of each diamond is a unique outcome of the cutter’s ability to optimise the brilliance of the diamond crystal paying attention to all of the 4Cs. The finer the grade or ‘make’ of the stone the brighter it will shine and the higher its value. Pop into your local Stephens Jewellers and we can easily demonstrate this for you. We also have a terrific booklet available to help better understand diamond quality and value. Our goal is always to provide the best quality to suit any budget.

I want to surprise my partner with an engagement ring, I know the styles she likes but not sure about her finger size how can I keep it a surprise but not get it all wrong? Rest assured, we are very used to keeping a secret and will always be able help fine tune your surprise purchase with you and your partner once you’ve given the ring. Our experienced consultants are here to help bring your thoughts on design to reality without concerns

I would love to incorporate my Gran’s engagement ring and anniversary band into my engagement ring, it means so much to me, is this possible and does it cost more to do this? We understand the importance a family heirloom brings to a couples wedding and engagement celebration and regularly restore original designs to their former beauty or integrate them into a new modern design. The starting point is an inspection of the goods to determine what condition the stones and metals ae in and from there we work with you on the best options available.

I’ve been looking for my perfect ring for ages but can’t really find exactly what I’m looking for what should I do? Buying an engagement ring is a very personal expression of love and everyone wants something a little unique. Once we understand the design elements that are important to you and your partner we can work through the selection process. Often we will have the design you’re looking for in store and simply need to make a few customisation adjustments. Alternatively our design selection images will help stimulate the process but ultimately our experienced diamond consultants will listen carefully to your needs and help bring your dream design to reality

We found the perfect ring design online but it looks pretty expensive can we still achieve this look to match our budget? Stephens Jewellers design team can bring your dream ring design to life at a very affordable price range. Often ring designs found online or admired on celebrities will feature large or unique centre stones. Once we understand the look you want achieve and your budget we can access the best value diamonds or coloured stones both within Australia and our global diamond supply network.

We want to shop locally but we also want to create something a bit different and be confident we are getting good value. The diamond market has changed a lot over recent years, we source diamonds direct from international diamond merchants, so great value is guaranteed. Making an appointment in our Shepparton or Echuca consulting suit is a great way to manage your privacy. Our buying power and custom design services ensure you have access to exceptional value and the very latest in jewellery design trends. Confidentiality is guaranteed and we support each ring design with an independent valuation.

We bought this engagement ring whilst on holidays overseas, can you design a wedding band to suit? The majority of our jewellery repair and manufacturing is completed in our Shepparton facility and generally speaking we can adjust ring sizes or create complimentary wedding band designs without too much difficulty. If you are thinking of buying a design overseas it’s always important to keep it simple especially shoulder work as the more complex the higher the risk in years to come.

There are so many men’s wedding band designs out there I’m confused and don’t know where to start. We understand your situation, it’s fantastic just how many options are available for men’s engagement and wedding bands now compared to only five years ago. Our suggestion is to start by working out whether his ring will be worn every day or due to work situations only on special occasions. There are many very durable metal choices available and we can create the same design in various metals. We have access to all men’s wedding band collections with simple digital tools in store to browse, so a consultation with one of our specialist consultants is a great starting point.

BRIDGETTE DEANE AND SAM ROBERTSON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2018 // NUMURKAH

bride and groom // 41

42 // bride and groom

A LOVE STORY, WHICH BEGAN AFTER A CHANCE MEETING IN SHEPPARTON 12 YEARS AGO, HAD ITS NEXT CHAPTER WRITTEN ON A BALMY SUMMER EVENING WHEN BRIDGETTE DEANE AND SAM ROBERTSON EXCHANGED VOWS.

Historic Dubuque Bed & Breakfast in Numurkah, with its expansive lawns and landscaped gardens, was the perfect space for the relaxed, elegant vibe the couple wished to create. “It was so important to both Sam and I that our guests were treated to a relaxing, enjoyable evening surrounded by good food, drinks and company,” Bridgette said. “We achieved this by selecting a venue where our guests didn’t need to change locations nor kill any time between the ceremony and reception, and also by creating a really chilled-out space with a delicious grazing table and live music by Brianna Lee to set the tone for the remainder of the evening.” An eclectic mix of seating, upholstered lounges, wine barrels and market umbrellas, arranged under a canopy of festoon lighting, allowed the intimate gathering of 60 guests to mingle and share the special occasion.

Native flowers adorned three rustic rings suspended from a tree branch and decorated the timber trestle tables, which were crafted from old floorboards and arranged in a single line for a casual dining experience. For Bridgette and Sam, their special day was all about them and their family; celebrant Mary Rose Hookey, the couple’s neighbour and friend, helped honour the memory of the bride’s late father Brian and sister Stephanie with a touching candle-lighting ceremony. “We also chose not to have any attendants, our main focus was our family, we wanted the day to be just about us and our kids,” Bridgette said. With two young children to care for, son Lewis and daughter Georgie, Bridgette turned to social media for inspiration and planning. “It’s amazing what you can organise via email and Facebook, it’s just so convenient. I used Instagram to communicate to my

suppliers exactly what I had in mind,” she said. “Except for one thing, I was too sceptical to buy my dress online.” In November, with the wedding date only weeks away, Bridgette made the trip to designer Rachel Gilbert’s Armadale salon with her heart set on a dress that turned out was no longer available. “But as soon as I tried this one on, it was so comfortable and fit me perfectly. It hung so well and made me feel good,” Bridgette said. The elegant, slim-line, ivory crepe dress had structured cross-over back detail and was complemented by an over-sized bouquet with a central king protea as the standout feature. Dispensing with tradition the couple didn’t have a cake, instead using that part of the wedding budget to treat guests to a mix of cocktails including espresso martinis, cosmopolitans and mojitos.

FORGING NEW TRADITIONS TRADITION MAY DICTATE IT’S THE FATHER-OF-THE-BRIDE’S ROLE TO ACCOMPANY THE BRIDE DOWN THE AISLE, BUT COUPLES TODAY ARE REWRITING THE RULES.

The time-honoured tradition is being reinterpreted for modern marriages and, depending upon their circumstances, brides are opting to ask other significant people in their lives to fulfil this all-important task. And while the custom is often tweaked, it still remains an honour for the person, or people, asked to accompany the bride. When Sarah Dempster married Brodie Garth in an intimate ceremony at Mitchelton Wines in October, both her parents Dianne Evely and Neil Dempster escorted her to the waiting groom. “Mum and Dad separated when I was quite young, and originally I was going to walk down the aisle on my own,” Sarah said. “Dad lives in Western Australia, and Mum had so much to do with planning the wedding, I thought having them both walk down the aisle with me was a good way to include them both.” With two children of their own, Bridgette Deane and Sam Robertson dispensed with many traditions for their summer wedding. The couple got ready together, with son Lewis and daughter Georgie, at Dubuque Bed & Breakfast in Numurkah and as Bridgette’s father Brian had passed away, the bride chose to walk down the aisle on her own. “I guess my decision was based on the fact that I wouldn’t want anyone other than my dad to give me away,” Bridgette said. “And my mum is undergoing chemo so I didn’t want to place any pressure on her in case she wasn’t feeling well. “I originally planned for Georgie, my daughter, to walk with me but she’d had enough by 5 pm and just played in the background,” she said. Having been raised by a single mother, Emily Edwards didn’t hesitate to have her mum Virginia accompany her for her marriage to Brad Sanderson on the banks of the Murray River at Moama. “Our family means the world to us, each of our closest members had their own special part on our day,” Emily said. “Being raised by only my mother, it was an absolute pleasure to have her walk me down the aisle.”

Sarah Dempster asked both her parents Dianne Evely and Neil Dempster to walk her down the aisle. Photography: Goldsmith & Co

PURDEYS JEWELLERS MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN DIAMOND CUTTING TECHNOLOGIES LEADS TO A SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL DIAMOND.

Michael Kearney H.R.D. Antwerp Qualified Diamond Grader, Jewellery Designer & Aurora Diamond expert.

NO DIAMOND HAS EVER BEEN CUT LIKE THIS BEFORE A diamond’s value and prestige is of course defined by the world famous four Cs. Colour, Clarity, Carat and Cut. However the most important of these Cs is the cut, and that’s why the Aurora Diamond is a major breakthrough. Advances in diamond design delivers the brightest diamond ever. Most round brilliant diamonds have 58 facets — the Aurora has 73. This maximises light performance, producing a visibly and measurably more beautiful diamond. You can visually see the difference.

MORE BRILLIANT

MORE BEAUTIFUL

The Aurora Diamond is handcrafted with a unique, patented faceting arrangement.

Beauty maybe in the eyes of the beholder, but when it comes to the Aurora Diamond, we can scientifically prove it.

73 strategically placed facets designed to maximise the return of light and brilliance, revealing the diamonds beauty. Brilliance is what we admire most in a diamond. Brilliant diamonds explode with light, catching the eye and sparkling with life.

World renowned Sarine Technologies have certified the Aurora Diamond to be cut with precision to increase brilliance, fire, sparkle and light symmetry. Only diamonds awarded the grade of Ultimate 1 and above are eligible to become an Aurora Diamond.

The ‘return of light’ can be measured four ways: BRILLIANCE

FIRE

The intense white light that radiates from the diamond.

Vivid flashes of colour as the light bends inside the diamond.

S PA R K L E

LIGHT SYMMETRY

Dramatic pin-points of light that occur as a diamond moves.

The even distribution of light from within the diamond.

Also diamonds 0.40cts and above are independently certified by the International Gemmological Institute (IGI), guaranteeing their excellence according to the 4 C’s (Cut, Clarity, Carat and Colour).

REBEKAH RIORDAN AND TOM BUZZA SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2018 // STRATHMERTON

bride and groom // 47

48 // bride and groom

FAST FORWARD 11 WEEKS FROM THE MOMENT HE PROPOSED, TOM BUZZA AND REBEKAH RIORDAN WERE PRONOUNCED HUSBAND AND WIFE.

With a baby on the way and football season around the corner they didn’t want to put their marriage on hold. Within three days, they had ticked off the date, the venue, the photographer and the entertainment. “We just picked a date and everything just fell into place,” Rebekah said. “It all came together as we had hoped and more. “I don’t know how we did it.” The next thing on the list was the bridesmaids’ dresses. Rebekah immediately fell in love and the Shona Joy design formed the wedding’s rustic yet glamorous style. Choosing vintage furniture, earthy tones and a big dose of fun with personalised wine

bottles, it came together at lightning pace and made Cactus Country in Strathmerton the perfect backdrop for photos. But finding a dress for herself and her growing bump was a little more difficult. Putting her trust in Grace Loves Lace, Rebekah sent off her measurements and they estimated how much she would grow before saying ‘I do’ at 28 weeks. Purchased sight unseen, the bride couldn’t have been happier when the lace gown arrived. It was perfect. With the big day approaching fast, there was no need for an engagement party but the pair still found time to celebrate hen’s and buck’s parties. It was then her friends gifted the brideto-be a beautiful denim jacket embroidered

with ‘Mrs Buzza’ on the back. The tight timeframe allowed the couple to focus on what a wedding day really is about — marriage. It was a poignant moment when they exchanged personalised vows with Rebekah’s then three-and-a-half-year-old daughter Lola by their side. “There was a lot to say to each other,” she said. “Tom also wrote vows directly for Lola as her step-dad. “He made everyone cry and he presented her with a locket as a promise. “For all of my family they were really moved by it.” And now the couple has welcomed a second little girl, Hilde into the family.

WINE

WITH PHILLIPS CELLARS AND REGIONAL WINE CENTRE

Photography: Prue Peters Photography

RAISE A GLASS PERFECTING THE DRINKS LIST IS A FINE ART, BUT IF YOU FOLLOW PAUL PHILLIPS FROM PHILLIPS CELLARS AND REGIONAL WINE CENTRE’S ADVICE IT’S A SIMPLE MATHEMATICAL EQUATION. THE BASICS

The guest list is the starting point for many wedding decisions and the wine and beer list is no exception. Paul recommends first doing the numbers and taking the time of year into consideration. “If it’s during the warmer months you’re going to be drinking more beer, bubbles and white wine, and the opposite in the winter months — more reds and less beer,” Paul said. THE LIST

A wedding is a celebration, and a celebration calls for sparkling wine. “You need bubbles, a sparkling white which can also be a prosecco — nice light, dry and fruity — they tend to go down well with the crowd,” he said. For the rest of the wine list you’ll need a selection of white and red varieties. For the whites, Paul suggests sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and riesling and when it comes to the red choose a shiraz and maybe a merlot, but more shiraz than merlot. With beer it’s best to stick to something 50 // bride and groom

mainstream like Carlton Draft, Carlton Dry, Great Northern, Peroni, Becks or Corona. Cider is also a great addition to bar on a hot day — lean towards an apple rather than a pear. “That will cover 65 to 70 per cent of the people who are drinking and then you should top up with little bits and pieces of what people you know who are attending like to drink whether it’s a moscato, a cabernet,” he said. DO THE MATHS

Now that you’ve worked out what type of drinks to add to the list, it’s time to work out how much is needed to stock the bar. But don’t worry, it’s not hard with Paul’s simple equation. Allow four stubbies of beer per male guest, one bottle of white including the bubbles per female guest and one glass of red wine per person. Whatever that number is, up it by 10 per cent. However, Paul also said it is important to consider your guests — are they big drinkers or not? — they are your friends and family after all. And if it’s set to be a hot one, add on a few extra cartons of beer.

LESS IS NOT MORE

There is nothing worse than the bar running dry. It is better to over-cater than to undercater — not only will it put the couple at ease but Paul said anything left over could be returned. “We can pack it up and deliver it to the venue cold ready to go and we can go back two days later and collect and credit off what’s not been used and give the person the bill,” he said. KEEP IT SIMPLE

No matter what you decide to serve, don’t over-complicate it. “If you get caught up in too much detail, you’ll find you have an array of wine that not everyone is going to drink and you’re creating too much work for yourself to do the catering,” Paul said. “You’ll find most people will drink what’s on offer anyway.”

MICHELE’S BRIDAL & FORMAL WEAR SOMETHING FOR EVERY BRIDE FROM STUNNING GOWNS TO GORGEOUS BRIDESMAID DRESSES. When should I start shopping for a wedding dress?

What happens if I lose or gain weight before the wedding?

Around 12 months ahead of time is absolutely perfect timing.

It’s very rare for anyone to put on weight before their wedding but we all handle stress differently (I like few Tim Tams to keep me grounded) but in any case most gowns have a variety of alterations options which can be quite quickly if need be.

It allows for a decision to not be rushed and ample time for delivery which can be up to nine months for some designers. Most designers take around three to six months though so if you are already on the countdown there’s nothing to worry about. Do I need to make an appointment? Absolutely! This means we are able to spend more time with you one on one to help find the perfect dress. Without an appointment we cannot guarantee that there will be a fitting room free. We normally book out on Saturdays around two to three weeks in advance so booking ahead of time is also a good idea. How do I know what style will suit me? It’s all trial and error. Everybody’s body shape is unique and we will help to find a balance of feeling incredible as well as looking amazing.

Do you do fittings in-house or do I need to go somewhere else? All of our alterations occur in-store. Once your dress arrives here she doesn’t leave until leaves with you ready to be worn on the big day. I’m dreaming of a boho wedding, what style of gown would you recommend? Boho has a different definition to everyone so it’s hard to pinpoint an exact style but the current boho trend is lots of lace with darker undertones from bronzes right through to blush pinks all tied in from there with flowers, accessories and hair and makeup.

When starting dress shopping it’s best to come in with an open mind because all the dresses look so much better with a real body in them compared to on the hanger.

I want a high neck dress, what accessories do you suggest?

How long does the dress process take from start to finish?

Hair style is a also a major influence on what accessories will the look too.

Once your dress is ordered and on the way she will take anywhere three to nine months depending on the designer; then after that the alterations process begins around three to four weeks before the wedding with most brides picking up their dress only a few days before hand to ensure it’s the perfect fit and freshly ironed.

With any dress it’s best to look at your overall look not just the neckline.

We normally suggest to our brides to have a hair trial then come in and try on accessories with your dress to see what compliments the overall look the best. You may have noticed that I call the gowns by she - its because they are all my ladies, I give them all names too just give them their own personalities. I’m a crazy dress lady!

How many fittings will I need? Most brides require two to three fittings which are normally spaced out over two to three weeks.

GET THE PARTY STARTED MODERN BRIDES ARE TAKING INSPIRATION FROM PAST GENERATIONS WHEN PLANNING THEIR PRE-WEDDING GIRL-TRIBE GATHERINGS.

Photography: Jenna Brunner

66 // bride and groom

High teas featuring tables laden with elegant crockery, sweet and savoury delicacies and sparkling wine are fast becoming the go-to events for brides-to-be. But these days girls can have it all, so organising a high tea doesn’t mean forgoing a night out with drinks and dancing. One of our brides, Rhiannon Nicholas, was guest of honour at an all-day event prior to her marriage to David Geddes in September. A month before the wedding a daytime event, hosted by Rhiannon’s bridesmaid Tayla Tenace and catered by cousin Eliza Brunner, brought together aunts, cousins, mothers and friends for an afternoon of fun, laughter and chat. With a wall of colourful pink-toned balloons behind them and fresh flowers lining the table the scene was set for part one of a day of celebration. “Having two events on the same day was great, the high tea allowed my aunties and mum to be involved, and then those that wanted to hopped on the bus for a night out on the town,” Rhiannon said. “It was the perfect way to include everyone. “Having the day a month before the wedding was good too; things weren’t so rushed so I could relax and enjoy it.”

CHEERS TO THE BRIDE-TO-BE

PRE-WEDDING RITUALS ARE A RITE OF PASSAGE.

2 3 4 5

But where do you even start? Planning a hen’s party or bridal shower is one of a bridesmaid’s most important yet daunting duties, but if you’re worried about the event being thrown in your honour, there is no reason the bride-to-be can’t take the reins. No matter who is doing the organising, it’s all about celebrating the future bride. Don’t worry about what the norm is or the expectations of others; plan an event that is tailored to the guest of honour. Maybe you’re a hen’s party type of girl — looking forward to a last hurrah — a night out with friends complete with dancing, 68 // bride and groom

games and maybe even some entertainment. Or maybe your partying ‘til dawn days are long gone and a more relaxing bridal shower is in order. But why not have both? This is a great way to involve all the important people in your life — from Grandma and your future mother-in-law to your nieces and nephews. You could start the day with a morning tea for all and then finish the day with a night on the town with friends, or host two completely separate events. Whatever you choose, gather the tribe and put your own spin on it.

Kitchen tea: Host a morning or afternoon tea, ask guests to bring a favourite recipe as a gift and organise some family-friendly games. Dinner and drinks: If you’re after a no-fuss approach, make a booking at a fancy restaurant, sit back and enjoy. Yoga retreat: For the health conscious, drinking might not be high on the priority list but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Go glamping: There are plenty of places that have jumped on the glamping bandwagon, and this style of accommodation is perfect for an old-school sleepover.

6

A cocktail making class: Learn how to mix your own cocktails and enjoy the fruits of your labour later.

7

Pole dancing classes: This idea may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s sure to be hilarious.

8 Photography: Jenna Brunner

Wine tour: Hire a bus (and a driver) and set out for a day in the vineyards. Pop into a few local wineries for tastings or even a long lunch.

9 10 11 12

High tea: For a classic alternative organise a high tea complete with sparkling wine and three-tier platters full of scones, sweet treats and finger sandwiches. Pamper day: Head to a day spa or even hire the professionals to come to you for a day of relaxation. Flower crown workshop: Find a florist happy to share their trade secrets. Weekend away: Book a house for the weekend with your gals. Check out the local hot spots or enjoy the festivities indoors. Pop-up picnic: Inside or out, a picnic with homemade goodies or grazing platters is a great relaxing option.

MARRYING YOUR SUMMER CRUSH MAY SOUND LIKE A MOVIE ENDING, BUT FOR SAM LIVINGSTON AND ROB PROSENIK IT’S A TRUE LOVE STORY.

First meeting while holidaying in Echuca, they started dating a few summers later at 15, before Rob popped the question in their happy place. It was no surprise the couple chose Tindarra Resort on the banks of the Murray River as their wedding venue. “We started dating there, we got engaged there, we got married there and a few weeks ago we picked up a puppy there,” Sam said. The pair threw out the tradition book, opting for meaningful inclusions against formalities — with a big dose of fun. “We didn’t care what anyone thought,” Sam said.

“We just wanted it to be a big party.” What started as friendly jesting ended up setting the tone of their wedding day with Rob’s best friend from kindergarten Corey Whelan as acting celebrant. He officiated the ceremony, except for when the real deal stepped in to make the marriage official. “When we started dating he would always say ‘you two should get married’ and Rob said ‘only if you marry us’,” Sam said. “Neither of us had heard what he was going to say — he kept it a secret. “He was so good I wouldn’t change it for the world.

“Everyone laughed, everyone cried, it really encapsulated us because he knows us so well.” They continued kicking tradition to the kerb with a man of honour, flats for comfort (and so Sam wasn’t taller than Rob), playsuits for the bridesmaids, wreath bouquets and boutonniere, a dress change and ditching the cake in favour of a champagne tower. For Sam, the only part of the day that made her nervous was pouring a magnum over a tower of old-school champagne glasses.

When should I start getting facials/using skincare if I have an event coming up? We suggest allowing 4 – 6 months to get your skin right, depending on your concern! Sometimes we don’t have this time frame but it is best to start as soon as possible due to the skin renewal cycle being an average of 28 days.

I am not sure which product I need? We have a really loyal, growing number of customers and we work hard to keep them! So it’s absolutely vital you use a product that is right for your skin’s needs, and we are very happy to help you in this respect. We suggest coming in for a quick mini facial so we can take a detailed personal history, find our your skin concerns, and see the skin when it is completely clean; so we can make recommendations on the right home-care routine and treatment plan for your skin

Get your skin

When should you start using an Eye Product? The eye area is finer and more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face, and the eyes therefore tend to be the first to show expression lines, fine lines and later on in life, deeper wrinkles. Generally we would advise starting to use an eye product from the age of 25 – 30. A good eye product will not only help correct — but prevent the formation of fine lines.

GET CONNECTED WITH A CELEBRANT IT’S THE CELEBRANT WHO MAKES THE MAGIC HAPPEN ON A WEDDING DAY. BRIDE AND GROOM SPOKE TO PROFESSIONALS JEN BROADBENT AND KATRINA KIM-WORLEY WHO SHARED THEIR ADVICE TO HELP FIND THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB. BE PREPARED

A celebrant will need a birth certificate, proof of identity and, in the instance of prior marriage, they will require a record of divorce before a legal marriage can happen. Couples are advised to be aware of the Marriage Act, and to fully understand the process involved before getting in touch with a celebrant. COVER YOUR BASES

It is best to have questions ready to ask when confirming the specific details for the day. How much is their fee and what is included like travel or insurance? Jen said there were plenty of factors to consider when booking. “They need to know what they want,” Jen said. “Obviously availability, experience and the fee included are all essential things to ask about. “As well as that, they can ask what else is provided. For instance I have a PA system that I can provide as well as a back-up celebrant who I can call on if anything should happen.”

GET IN QUICK

No matter how much time you think you have, always contact a celebrant as soon as the date is confirmed. Jen said it was a case of acting fast when it came to booking a celebrant. “We require a completed Notice of Intended Marriage form at least one month before the wedding. You can give it to your celebrant up to 18 months beforehand,” she said. DON’T RUSH

There is certain level of trust in the relationship between a celebrant and a couple. Katrina advises not to act with haste. “You need to all get along; if there is no connection I will not get offended if someone says that I am not quite right for their wedding,” Katrina said. “You just need to keep shopping until you find the right celebrant.”

GEORGIA ODGERS AND TOM VIBERT SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2018 // ARDMONA

bride and groom // 79

80 // bride and groom

A ROMANTIC SUNSET PHOTO SHOOT GAVE NEWLYWEDS GEORGIA ODGERS AND TOM VIBERT IMPORTANT TIME TO REFLECT ON THEIR SPECIAL DAY, ON THEIR OWN.

They managed to slip away from their reception and the busy-ness of the day to spend some time together, to talk and take in the magic of the occasion. “You spend so much of the day catching up with your guests and getting ready for the day that it was important to take a short amount of time away from everything together,” Georgia said. Georgia’s event management skills and firsthand experience with various suppliers helped realise the couple’s vision for a unique and personal celebration on the bride’s parents’ property Lagoona Farm at Ardmona. “We were really aware of ensuring the styling fit in with the surroundings of the farm,” Georgia said.

“Neither of us likes a lot of attention, so we just wanted to create an atmosphere where everyone felt relaxed, along with us, so we could enjoy the day.” Natural furnishings crafted from timber, native flowers and fabric-topped hay bales, arranged as seating for the ceremony, embraced the relaxed vibe and having the ceremony and reception at the same place allowed guests to mingle, instead of moving from one venue to another. Pops of navy, to match the bridesmaids’ dresses, were reflected in numerous styling elements such as the invitations, seating plan, menus and table napkins. Georgia and Tom, who met at a Tatura sporting function in 2014, loved the idea

of their home-based wedding, for both practicality and for enabling family and friends to celebrate long into the star-filled night. “Having the ceremony and reception in the same location made the set-up and pack-up a lot easier, and our suppliers loved the fact that everything and everyone was in the same spot,” Georgia said. “And as we didn’t have to be ‘kicked out’ of a venue, our guests could party into the early hours, and so did we!” When Bendigo-based band The Knots finished playing at 12.30 am a prepared playlist took over and kept revellers entertained until the bride and groom exited two hours later.

HOME SWEET HOME WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE, THERE REALLY IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

While there is a common misconception that a flick of a wand will transform a paddock into a palace, anyone who has tied the knot in their own backyard will tell you the truth. bride and groom spoke to Russell Orchard from Goulburn Valley Party Hire in Shepparton to put together a guide to planning your nuptials at home. THE ESSENTIALS

Photography: Mickala Thomas – Pure Mac Photography

Shelter: A must-have, no matter the setting. With the right amount of styling a welldressed marquee can look really special. And it is always handy to have a back-up plan in regards to covering your guests in the event of a sudden downpour. Power: No matter how bohemian your outlook is, guests much prefer being able to see the first dance without squinting or hear the MC without a cupped hand to the ear. The average household is not equipped to power a marquee for hours at a time, so a generator is always a safe bet. Toilets: This is an absolute necessity. Make sure there is a surplus of facilities for the guests as this is one part of the day that you don’t want to trip up on. Parking: Unless your guest list does not surpass single digits, it is fundamental that you have a good-sized area marked out for people to park their cars. Consider the scale; it may be a good idea to hire a valet. Dance floor: While a dance floor may not be at the top of your list, you want people to have fun at your wedding and usually it is the focal point of most of the festivities. Also, the first dance is a lot more pleasant for the crowd if they don’t have to witness any rolled ankles during Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. STYLING

At some point in time you may need to call in the big guns to get your location looking the part. Professional stylists like Mack + Mills Event Style and Hire from Barham work their magic with rustic furniture, recycled timber and floral arrangements to take your setting from drab to fab. They will sit down with the couple and take them through the dos and don’ts when it comes to adding elements of style and elegance to the party. 82 // bride and groom

ENTERTAINMENT

As charming as it is having your 12-year-old niece belt out her rendition of Skinny Love, that’s not likely to keep the guests on their feet for hours. The choice of a band or DJ is essential to setting the mood of a wedding and failing to provide an adequate source of entertainment can leave a lasting impression on your guests. THE BAR

While you don’t need running shoes to run it certainly helps. And that same rule applies to having fun at a wedding. A succinct range of beer and wine are the perfect complement to a meal. A caravan bar like ‘Peggy’ from Mack + Mills Event Style and Hire is not only a practical solution but a great styling element to any property wedding. The fully functional bar on wheels that comes equipped with glassware and staff on hand to serve, all the hosts have to do is supply the alcohol and ‘Peggy’ and crew take care of the rest.

CATERING

Unless you can channel your inner Martha Stewart whenever you please, a catering company is the safe option to alleviate any stress or concerns surrounding the food for the occasion. Be aware that chefs will need access to a suitable kitchen area to prepare the meals, unless you only intend to serve finger food at the event. There a lot of factors to consider, including dietary requirements so it’s best to give the experts a bit of forewarning and provide clear instructions on what you want your guests to be served on the day. It may seem daunting, but with the right amount of thought and strategic planning you can tailor your special day exactly how you imagine it to be.

DESTINATION WEDDING

HIT THE ROAD IT’S NOT HARD TO SEE THE ALLURE OF GETTING HITCHED IN AN EXOTIC LOCATION.

It may take some organisation but a destination wedding can make for a more intimate affair, allow real bonding time with loved ones, and is a great opportunity to explore a new corner of the globe. But that doesn’t have to mean jetsetting half-way around the world. Adventure awaits closer to home. Choosing a destination within a few hours’ drive or a short flight can take away some barriers for guests — cost, time off work and difficulties traveling — especially for older guests or those with young children. Whether you’re dreaming of a beach wedding like local couple Nicole Goggin and Warren (Fred) Batey or are on the search for a destination within the Goulburn Valley like Hannah Peters and David Westaway; a destination wedding is a great way to extend a wedding day to a multi-day celebration.

NICOLE GOGGIN AND WARREN (FRED) BATEY SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2018 // CABARITA BEACH AND CASUARINA

It was a given the beach would be central to Nicole Goggin and Warren (Fred) Batey’s wedding day. Initial thoughts involved a trip with their five children, but plans quickly morphed into an intimate destination wedding on the NSW north coast. It was during a long weekend trip Nicole scouted the perfect ceremony spot — The Cove at Cabarita Beach. “It has that combination of the beach and the ocean but also these big beautiful rocks,” Nicole said. While much of the planning was done more than 1500 km away, the process allowed them to enjoy some mini getaways in the lead-up, and Nicole said Brisbane-based wedding planner and stylist Coco & Confetti helped shape the day of their dreams. “That was my back-up to make sure it

wasn’t too much stress for me,” she said. “We wanted our guests to feel relaxed. We wanted the atmosphere to be beautifully styled, but effortlessly.” The result was a bohemian beachside ceremony, with a crisp white tepee arbour, white peacock chairs, bench seats and parasol umbrellas for the guests — all set against the backdrop of the crystal blue ocean, rock face and greenery. “As a surprise to Fred, I organised a gelato cart,” Nicole said. “They set up at the top of the staircase, overlooking the most magical view of the beach. “It was a big hit with everyone and a muchneeded refreshment on such a hot day.” While at the reception, colourful rugs and cushions, lawn games, flowers and candles set the romantic boho vibe.

For Nicole and Fred it was important to spend this happy time with daughters Tori and Madi Goggin and Coco Batey, and sons Diesel Batey and Enrique Goggin, and their 57 guests consisting of only immediate family and their closest friends. With the ‘save-the-date’ sent out far in advance, the couple gave guests a chance to turn the wedding into a holiday. Travelling up a week before the big day and continuing with a week-long ‘family moon’, they didn’t just have a single day of celebrations. “We had a barefoot bowls day planned for the day before but the weather was horrid so we didn’t make it outside to play but we had drinks and platters,” Nicole said. “It was really great having people around to catch up.”

HANNAH PETERS AND DAVID WESTAWAY SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2018 // MURCHISON

On a mission of wanderlust, Frankston’s Hannah Peters and David Westaway ventured out of the city in search of the perfect wedding venue. The hunt was cut short when they stumbled across Byrchendale in Murchison. Just a few hours up the highway, the pair had found the best of both worlds; the adventure of a destination wedding without a lot of the hassle. It ticked all the boxes: it wasn’t too far for guests to travel (they even organised buses to pick up and drop off at their accommodation), David could go for a prewedding jetski on Lake Nagambie and they had the freedom to style the venue in the days leading up to the wedding. And days they needed.

Arriving with two trailers of DIY and collected décor, the couple transformed the rustic venue with an earthy palette, lashings of greenery, fresh florals and accents of modern metallics. “I wanted to do the styling and decorations myself,” Hannah said. “I spent millions of hours cutting, glueing and painting our MDF zigzagged gold table centres.” Along with 150 handmade blush napkins, concrete-look plates from Kmart, gold cutlery, terrariums, laser-cut place cards and acrylic signage it came together like a dream. While the natural vines covering the chapel created a magical ceremony setting, with the help of Simply Stems Boutique Florist this continued into the reception with a hanging

greenery installation the centrepiece of the barn. With plans for a massive South American honeymoon on hold, the couple decided to take advantage of the destination wedding, inviting the bridal party and their partners for a ‘mini mates moon’. “We spent a week wake boarding, water skiing, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and partying the rest of the week away,” Hannah said. “With everyone buzzing off all the good vibes made it feel like one huge wedding week. “We never had that ‘it’s all over so quick’ moment because it didn’t feel like it was.”

BOBBIE-JO NASH AND IAN WRIGHT MONDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2018 // LAS VEGAS

Less than two weeks before they were set to fly out for the United States, Bobbie-Jo Nash and Ian Wright made a split-second decision. Engaged for a year, the couple had made no wedding plans but talk of the overseas trip had friends and family joking about a Las Vegas elopement. The seed was planted and on a Sunday drive they turned to each other and decided to do it. “People had mentioned it as a joke and we thought why not,” Bobbie-Jo said. “We called the venue and booked it in.” With a stop in Vegas already planned for New Year’s Eve the date was locked in. In the week leading up, Bobbie-Jo and Ian let their family and closest friends in on

the secret and the bride-to-be borrowed a suitcase-friendly yet intricate white gown from a friend. “It was important that Dad was okay with it and he thought it was a great idea,” she said. Having arrived in Las Vegas the day before, Bobbie-Jo and Ian woke up together on their wedding day. There was no need to hide the dress, no need for drinks with the bridesmaids to calm the nerves, no need for a first look, just them. “We did only what we wanted to do on the day for ourselves and enjoying each other’s company,” she said. “It was nice to get ready together, we didn’t have to stress about anything.” After arriving in a limo at The Little White

Wedding Chapel, the most memorable part of the day was being announced husband and wife and they then brought in the new year as a married couple. The next day they shared the news with those back home with an Instagram and Facebook post and while everyone went crazy, Bobbie-Jo said the elopement wasn’t unexpected. And they continued on their travels  — now a honeymoon — and headed to New York City.

REAL WEDDING

STORY: JACQUELINE SHANDLEY PHOTOGRAPHER: PRUE PETERS PHOTOGRAPHY

TARA SAVAGE AND SEAN MURPHY SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2018 // MERRIGUM

As if planning a wedding wasn’t stressful enough, Tara Savage did it all in secret, so she could give her long-time love the gift he wanted most in the world. “It was the greatest gift I could give him because he had always wanted us to get married and I was the one that said no,” Tara said. “It was the best way I could show him how much I loved him.” The couple originally paid the deposit for an April wedding on the Echuca wharf in 2007, after a quick romance and a riverside proposal the year before — but Tara fell pregnant with their first child and they put the wedding off. Eleven years later and Tara could have forgone the formality, except it was too important to Sean. “I really wasn’t one for marriage and we already had the car, the house, the kids — to me it was just a bit of paper,” she said.

“But for Sean it was important, he said he wanted to be able to call me his wife.” The first trick was getting Sean to sign the necessary Notice of Intented Marriage form, even though they were not ‘planning’ a wedding. “I just said we’d get married the next time we went on a cruise, we love our cruises,” Tara said. “It took ages to find a celebrant who was willing to go along with the surprise, but I finally found Sheila and she was awesome, she was in on the joke. “I knew deep in my heart that he would never have said no, but the celebrants were not so sure.” So how did Tara pull off the ultimate in romantic subterfuge? With lots of white lies, some stealthy moves including buying her wedding dress and marquee as eBay bargains, using her annual Christmas

lights party as camouflage — and a whole lot of help from her friends. “I had an excuse for everything, we have a Christmas lights party every year, but he wanted to know why suddenly I wanted to have it catered and he wanted to know why we suddenly needed a marquee — I would just get emotional and he would stop asking,” she said. “If I had to do it again I’m not sure I would do it as a surprise, it was really difficult not to be able to talk to Sean when I was stressed about things to do with the wedding.” But Tara did have some special friends to help her along the way. Her photographs were done by her old school friend, her cake was done by another girlfriend, another did the hors d’oeuvres and someone else painted her toenails while her mum had spent considerable time collecting rose petals from other friends’ gardens.

They added their own flair to a romantic space at Moama on Murray Resort, with a mix of boldly coloured protea, hydrangea and vibrant roses, and re-purposed blocks of firewood, topped with vases of flowers, to create a rustic aisle. “When you get married by the river, you don’t want to take away from the view, and I love flowers so we used those to brighten everything up,” Emily said. Two white peacock chairs and three chandeliers crafted from foliage added to the boho vibe, while a quirky cake topper of a bride and groom with a fishing rod represented the fun-loving couple’s first date. “Brad and I grew up in the same area, and always knew of each other; we went fishing on the Goulburn River for our first date and have been inseparable ever since,” Emily said.

With family being so important to them, Emily and Brad each chose those they were closest to for special roles. “Our family means the world to us,” she said. “Being raised by my mother it was an absolute pleasure to have her walk me down the aisle, and have my brother Jake as ‘brides-man’ and his son Phoenix as our page boy. “Brad also had his brother Luke as his groomsman. We could not have imagined getting married without our two brothers by our sides, who we have grown with and will forever be best friends.” As a hairdresser Emily had a choice of hairstyles at her disposal and opted for an elegant ponytail that perfectly complemented her white slim-line gown.

“I actually had two dresses; one was a boho-style and this one,” she said. “I only decided half-an-hour before the ceremony which one I was going to wear; I decided on this one because it was so comfortable.” The couple said hosting the ceremony and reception at the same place was perfect, from both a planning and practical perspective. “Only having to set up in the one place saved us time and allowed us to spend more time with our guests on the day,” Emily said. “If I could change one thing on my wedding day, after having a 4 pm ceremony, it would be to get married as early in the day as possible. “There is never enough time to enjoy this one magical day surrounded by the most amazing people you love. Make every second count.”

HONEYMOONS

WITH LYN MCNAUGHT TRAVEL

TAKE AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY AFTER THE STRESS, EXCITEMENT AND JOY OF THEIR WEDDING, MOST NEWLYWEDS LOOK FORWARD TO SPENDING THEIR HONEYMOON SOMEWHERE SPECIAL. THERE ARE AS MANY OPTIONS FOR HOW TO SPEND A HONEYMOON AS THERE ARE NEWLY MARRIED COUPLES, SO BRIDE AND GROOM SPOKE TO LYN MCNAUGHT OF LYN MCNAUGHT TRAVEL IN MOOROOPNA ABOUT SOME POPULAR AND DIFFERENT DESTINATIONS.

// AFRICA Although Africa is not the first place most people think of when planning a honeymoon, the continent offers so much diversity every couple could find a perfect honeymoon experience there. Wildlife is usually first on the ‘must see’ list in Africa and a safari is sure to provide many unforgettable moments. Different parts of the continent offer vastly different scenery and wildlife so visitors need to decide which animals are top of their wish-list and plan their trip accordingly. The plains and hills of the Masai Mara in Kenya are home to elephants, zebra, big cats and hippos. The wetlands of the Okavango delta in Botswana also have hyena, giraffe, antelope and rhino, and can be explored on a boat safari. For a gorilla trek, Uganda or Rwanda are the places to go, and Namibia has stunning desert scenery and savannah lands where big cats, elephants, giraffe and zebra roam. For keen photographers and happysnappers alike the photo opportunities are endless, not just the encounters with

wildlife, but the colourful local people, amazing sunsets and breathtaking scenery such as Victoria Falls or Mt Kilimanjaro. There is accommodation to suit every visitor, from historic lodges and custombuilt resorts to glamping and camping. For some chill time to relax, a few days in Zanzibar or on the island of Mauritius would make a great ending to a fabulous honeymoon. As well as idyllic white sand beaches, Zanzibar offers historic Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar City. Its tall buildings and narrow streets are now a World Heritage site. Mauritius is a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean and boasts fabulous beaches, coral reefs and lush subtropical forest. Most hotels and resorts offer a wide range of entertainment from waterskiing and parasailing to snorkelling. Lyn’s tip: Check with your doctor well in advance whether you will need any vaccinations or medication to prevent malaria.

// COOK ISLANDS Sprinkled in the Pacific Ocean about eight hours’ flying time from Australia, the Cook Islands are remote, unspoilt, exotic and enjoy glorious weather yearround. The pristine white sand beaches and clear blue lagoons make this an ideal destination for couples looking for sea, sun and relaxation. When visitors are ready for a change from lying on the beach or slipping in and out of the pool, the main island of Rarotonga offers cycle tours, inland safaris, deep sea fishing, quad bike adventures and cultural tours. Cars, scooters and bikes are available to hire for those who prefer to explore in their own time. The major resorts have sailboards, paddleboats and all kinds of water sports available. There are plenty of great cafés and restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine, idyllic settings and great views. To experience the local food and hospitality visitors can take a progressive dinner tour, enjoying three courses with three different families in their island-

style homes. The island of Aitutaki is a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga and has a lagoon fringed with uninhabited sand islands. Visitors can hire a canoe and paddle out to have an entire beach or even island to themselves. Aitutaki offers some of the best diving in the world with the chance to see moray eels, green turtles, Napoleon wrasses and schools of spotted eagle rays, and to explore coral gardens, caves and drop-offs. The slightly less adventurous can enjoy a snorkelling safari, visiting several of the small islands to swim among colourful tropical fish in the crystral-clear water and see giant clams and sea turtles. The islands have a wide variety of accommodation options: beach bungalows, luxury villas, tiny guest houses and resorts, some offering adultonly accommodation for visitors wanting quiet and seclusion. Lyn’s tip: Forget your watch but be sure to pack your bathers and sunscreen.

// HAWAII Hawaii is one of the world’s top honeymoon destinations and offers beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, lots of opportunities for adventure and great night-life for anyone in the mood to party. Flights from Melbourne land at Honolulu on the island of O’ahu, site of Waikiki beach and Pearl Harbor. Waikiki is a vibrant city with lots of beach-front resorts, a wide range of dining options and Hawaiian entertainment. The famous beach is a great place to learn to surf and even offers couples’ surfing lessons. Honolulu itself is the place to go for shopping, with lots of great boutiques and one of the United States’ largest outdoor shopping malls. There are many different ways to explore the island and lots to see and experience. A helicopter ride gives a great view of the island’s rainforests, beaches, reefs and cliffs. Bus tours of the island operate daily, visiting the North Shore surfing beaches where the pro-surfers ride the waves, historic temples, the cultural town of Waimanalo and Nu’uanu Pali Lookout with its panoramic views. A horseback adventure at Kualoa 106 // bride and groom

Ranch takes visitors to see where more than 50 Hollywood TV shows and blockbuster movies were filmed. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Centre offers a chance to learn about the effect the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor had on the course of World War II and on recent history. Visitors can take a guided tour of the battleship Missouri and the USS Arizona memorial. The island of Hawaii, affectionately referred to as ‘the big island’, has the spectacular Volcanoes National Park, where visitors can see molten lava flows and steam vents. There are also white sand beaches with clear water ideal for snorkelling and rainforests with lush vegetation and waterfalls. Historic towns and villages offer great opportunities to buy local art and drink great coffee while soaking in the island’s history and culture. The other islands offer more idyllic beaches and great snorkelling opportunities, plus unique national parks preserving the natural beauty of this fascinating place. Lyn’s tip: Being a US state you will need a visa to visit Hawaii; your travel agent can arrange that.

HONEYMOONS

// NEW YORK AND LAS VEGAS New York is one of the world’s most iconic cities and couples often choose to honeymoon there, as it is somewhere that both people want to visit. ‘The Big Apple’ is a city that doesn’t sleep, and offers many great experiences — taking the Ellis Island ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty, exploring Central Park, enjoying a Broadway show, eating pizza in Brooklyn or just standing in Time Square people-watching and soaking up the atmosphere. New York is also home to many great museums and galleries: Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan and numerous smaller museums for special interests.

There are also many places accessible on a day tour from New York city. A flight to upstate New York gives visitors the chance to see the breathtaking Niagara Falls. A bus trip to Philadelphia takes in the Liberty Bell and a tour of an Amish community. Or visit Washington DC to see the White House, Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln and Washington memorials. Another iconic American city is Las Vegas. In the Mojave Desert in Nevada, Vegas is one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations and many honeymooning couples like to spend a few days there.

Famous for its casinos and lavish entertainment venues, Vegas offers the opportunity to see some of the most famous singers, comedians and magic shows in the world. A day trip to the Grand Canyon is a popular excursion from Vegas and there are many options for this unforgettable excursion. Enjoy a scenic flight over the canyon in a light plane, take a hummer tour around the national park or enjoy a champagne picnic on the banks of the Colorado River when your helicopter lands on the floor of the canyon. Lyn’s tip: As health care costs in the US are astronomical, make sure you have appropriate travel insurance.

REAL WEDDING

STORY: SHARON WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY: JESSICA ROSE LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY

SARAH TERRY AND ALISTAIR JACKA SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2018 // KOONOOMOO

bride and groom // 109

110 // bride and groom

CELEBRATING THEIR SPECIAL DAY WITH NO TIME LIMITS OR RESTRICTIONS WAS SARAH TERRY AND ALISTAIR JACKA’S GOAL SO THEY HAD TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE SQUARE TO COME UP WITH A VENUE TO SUIT.

Enter the helpful team at Time Out Resort, Koonoomoo, who made it possible for Sarah and Alistair to have the waterfront wedding of their dreams and a relaxed party atmosphere long into the night. “We spent a lot of time talking about the sort of wedding we wanted, and one of the main things was not being regulated and being given a finish time,” Sarah said. “You spend so much money and guests make the effort to travel so far, we didn’t want to be told what time to finish up. The beauty of having it there was that guests could go to bed when they wanted or stay and celebrate.” Just shy of the two-year anniversary of their first meeting the couple said ‘I do’ on a sandy beach on the banks of the Murray River. Amidst the backdrop of towering red gums a simple green, white and teal colour theme

and minimalist decorating style reflected the couple’s love of the river and bush setting and desire for a relaxed, fun day. Opting to go barefoot for the beach ceremony the bride and groom invited their guests to ditch their shoes, designating a large patch of turf and signage for just that purpose. The savvy bride bought her dress from a second-hand online store, falling in love with the sheer lace and tan underlay creation, which was paired, at the last minute, with a simple flower crown. Sarah’s grand entrance, on the back of her dad’s imported Boss Hoss motorbike, gave guests the hint that this wedding day would be a little different. “The ceremony was at 3.30 pm and because it was daylight savings we wanted to have our

photos taken at dusk, so we stayed with our guests until about 6 pm and then re-joined them for dinner at 8,” Sarah said. Games, activities, a photo booth, cocktail hour and pontoon boat cruises along the river kept everyone entertained until the evening marquee reception got under way. Sarah said their wedding day was like a festival with the collective village of family and friends supplying platters, cob loaves and fruit and helping to serve the meat and salads. Fireworks lit up the night sky following the speeches, the seven-minute pyrotechnic show a surprise for guests, and the next morning most of the wedding-goers gathered for breakfast to round out a weekend of celebrations.
