The GMCU Allianz Campaspe Murray Business Awards are about celebrating the best in the business! They support, honour and celebrate our best local businesses from the smallest to the largest, our best local business owners, their best staff, our best young entrepreneurs and our best community organisations. Local businesses are more than just important to our economy – they are central to the fabric of our community. The Awards recognise the important social contributions made by organisations through service excellence, inclusive and ethical behaviour and environmental sustainability. They also provide the opportunity and stimulus for businesses to review their own performance and to measure themselves against the best in class amongst their peers. The finalists are evaluated via a number of established award categories. Each category is assigned two independent judges who are tasked with reviewing the finalists’ applications followed by a series of interviews with each finalist covering a range of benchmarked business areas. The judges then compare their scores and observations to determine the winner in each category.

We would therefore like to extend our sincere thanks to the judges for the time, effort and thought they have contributed to this process. This year many of the judges have commented how impressed they have been by the overall standard of the finalists
in many of the categories and indeed what a pleasure it has been to learn more about these exceptional businesses in the Campaspe and Murray area. Many thanks must also go to the wonderful sponsors of the 2015 Awards with a special thanks to GMCU and Allianz who have supported our Awards this year as the major sponsors. Their generous support and that of the individual category sponsors enables these awards to take place and demonstrates their willingness to encourage and promote local businesses and their achievements. For the full coverage of the Gala Awards Presentation Evening be sure to get your copy of the Riverine Herald on Friday 16 October, the Campaspe News on Tuesday 20 October and the Kyabram Free Press on Wednesday 21 October 2015. Employee of the Year This award recognises the excellence of an individual employee. ‘Dawes & Vary Riordan Lawyers employ over 75 people throughout the Goulburn Valley. Our employees, like most businesses, are our best asset and are the reason we are able to deliver competent and efficient legal services to our clients. We are proud to sponsor this year’s Employee of the Year category for the Campaspe Murray Business Awards and wish all nominees the best of luck.’ - Dawes & Vary Riordan Director, Hugh Melville.
Finalists Belinda Slater – Naughtons Pools and Spas Belinda Slater is our shop manager and one of our most experienced water analysis technicians. She joined the team at Naughtons Pools and Spas in November 2005 and therefore is approaching her ten year anniversary. This in itself is an achievement these days as people don’t tend to stay with the same employer for that amount of time. One of Belinda’s most outstanding attributes is her customer service, she is always so happy, bright and bubbly to our customer’s, regardless of the type of day she is having. As soon as she steps into the shop her personality shines through. Belinda would greet the
majority of our customers by name and we all know the warm and fuzzy feeling that gives you when you are recognised. Another of Belinda’s attributes is her product knowledge; she is our spa “guru” and knows just about everything there is to know about our pool chemicals. Also, if she doesn’t know she will then research and endeavour to find out any curly questions she may be asked. Belinda’s product knowledge of all the individual components of all of the different swimming pools, including those we don’t stock, is immense and this knowledge is such a bonus to our business.
Jenn Rendle - Echuca Moama Visitor Information Centre Jenn Rendle manages the accommodation reservation service at the Echuca Moama Visitor Information Centre. Being able to share it with visitors to Echuca Moama is very satisfying”

she said. Echuca Moama Tourism CEO Tom Smith commented: “Generating over $600,000 annually in accommodation sales is a brilliant performance and when you combine this with her leadership and customer service skills it’s not hard to see why she is an outstanding team member. Jenn is a true asset to the EMT team and a worthy finalist in these awards”.

REBECCA CARNE
Erna Gobbo – Kyabram Club Erna’s role within the Club is “Bistro Hostess” and therefore she is at the forefront of the Club’s direct liaison and representation to the customer. Erna has a leadership role amongst the front-of-house bistro staff and is responsible for the on-floor service delivery. Erna’s attention to detail with customer service ensures many customers are habitual patrons who feel really appreciated and valued by Erna’s individual attention. Erna is attuned to the comfort and needs of the customer, and holds a constant alertness to such ambience features as room temperature, background music, the cleanliness and presentation of dining room facilities – Erna is constantly striving for that customer satisfaction and her role within the business is to train,
lead and nurture the less experienced bistro staff to follow her leadership and example. Erna invests time into her staff, training them to a high level of not only customer service but also customer interaction. Erna is clear with her expectations of staff and endeavours to ensure all staff are encouraged, encompassed and included. Outside of her working hours Erna is proactive in her social interaction with staff and holds a strong, respectful social bond with her colleagues. Erna commenced at the Club on a casual basis in 2010 and when the Club took charge of the catering operation internally in 2013 Erna was placed into a permanent part-time position until eventually being appointed full-time.
Peter Connally – Nichol Trading Peter Connally, better known to most as ‘Hock’ is almost deemed a transport icon in the industry. Starting his driving career 42 years ago, he has been working at Nichol Trading almost 10 years. Peter’s primary role within the business is as a B-double operator, however he easily steps into other areas of the business when required, including operations manager. The long term business relationships he has formed in the industry were imperative in Nichol Trading’s fleet surviving the drought. During this period fertiliser sales slowed. Peter took it upon
himself using his extensive industry contacts to source alternative freight to keep Nichol’s fleet working. Brian and Glenda feel Peter is not only an employee, but a friend and a great role model to all. Younger drivers often ring him for directions and to get them out of sticky situations calling on his extensive knowledge of Australian roads that is second to none. He is extremely dedicated in all areas of the business, including mentoring new staff and cares for the business and the equipment he operates as if it was his own.

The Splendid Word The Splendid Word was established in 2011 by Christy O’Brien and Leonie Canham following discussions with local businesses about their lack of time and skill to properly tell their story and sell their message. As journalists, they use their combined media skill set and shared love of language to provide a high-class communications service to clients across the region. Their portfolio includes writing communication strategies for corporate organisations; online blogs and website content; corporate style guides; email etiquette guides; script writing for radio and television advertising; speeches; media releases; and annual reports. The Splendid Word prides itself on using positive words to spread the ‘good stuff’ about business and organisations - large or small. Christy and Leonie are
natural storytellers and are passionate supporters and champions of businesses dedicated to leaving a positive imprint on their communities and are loud and proud advocates of the doers, dreamers and believers who use their skills, knowledge and qualifications for good. Their biggest achievement is dreaming big and following their passion to establish a sustainable and niche business which is family friendly and works around their busy lives. They were thrilled to achieve recognition at the 2013 business awards for their unique business model, prompting award organisers to establish a new ‘home-based’ category and they are huge supporters of those who choose to run a professional and specialist consultancy from their homes.

A message from the 2013 Business of the Year winner Being crowned Campaspe Murray Business of the Year in 2013 has opened new doors for Moama on Murray Resort, says director John Nunan. “We promoted our Business of the Year 2013 Award by branding and using the winning logo on emails and letterheads, which has given people increased confidence in our business,” he said. “People want to be involved with successful organisations. With credibility and longevity comes a degree of respect which can assist in getting people to help you get where you want to go to further improve.” Drawing from his own experience, Mr Nunan encouraged other businesses in the district to throw their hat in the ring and nominate for the awards. “When you take the time to examine your business and get input from others with experience, it often highlights areas you are doing well in and areas you need improvement in,” he said. “Winning an award such as this demonstrates our business is healthy as is the motivation of the people who have helped achieve it.”
According to Mr Nunan, some of the benefits of winning the award include: • It helps instil a level of pride in the people who work at the resort and have been responsible for its success. It tells them they are on the right track and to continue to strive for excellence. Every award gained gives a business a little more credibility and bargaining power. It also helps us put things in perspective. On those days when things do not go well, we can remind ourselves we are on track and doing the best we can – and we have a prestigious award to prove it. • It helps promote the business. We have used the achievement through making it known to our guests and people who can further assist us to drive the resort further. It draws attention to the positives of the business. • It helps in motivating us to go further. It energises people, inspires improvement and acknowledges the hard work everyone puts in together as a team to produce a great outcome. It lets people know we are serious about what we are doing and we are constantly driving improvement within our business.
