Welcome! Completing year 12 is an exciting time in your life, but it can also be stressful and confusing for many. Some may not get into the university course they want, or are still unsure of what to do next. This year’s Careers and Education magazine explores the different options available to you once you have finished school. You may choose to continue your studies through university or TAFE, start an apprenticeship, defer your university placement or have a gap year and work, or join the Australian Defence Force. Just remember, whatever you decide will not determine the rest of your life. Career development is a lifelong journey. Your career is larger than a job or an occupation, it’s the variety of experiences of learning and work (unpaid and paid) you undertake throughout your lifetime.

Maddison McSwain (right).

Thinking of deferring? In the middle of her first-year of university, former Moama Anglican Grammar dux Maddison McSwain has no regrets about deferring. After graduating from year 12 in 2011, Maddison decided to defer her offer to study professional communication at Melbourne’s RMIT University. “I chose to defer because I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do,” she said. “I thought it would be a great idea for me at the time and I don’t regret it for a second.” Maddison said the deferment process was easy, as she just had to complete a form and lodge it with the university by the required date. During her gap year, she worked in the hospitality industry in Echuca. “I made lots of new friends and spent a lot of time hanging out with them, as well as keeping in touch with my other friends who had moved away,” she said. She admitted seeing many of her school friends move away to university, as well as having to work for a living, were downsides to deferring, but there were many advantages, including having a break from study, meeting new people, making new friends, travelling, earning money and simply enjoying life. “It was awesome having a break from school and doing whatever I wanted to do,” she said. Maddison said her first year of university was going really well, although stressful at times.

The deferral process What is deferment?

“That’s the life of a uni student. We all get stressed,” she said. “However, I could not be happier with my decision. I love uni and the college where I live. I love RMIT and I love the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made. It’s been an amazing experience. “A lot of people might think having a gap year means you won’t end up going to uni at all. I don’t agree with that. If you really want to go to uni, you will. “Taking a year off doesn’t mean you will definitely change your mind. You might decide uni wasn’t what you wanted to do after all, but at the same time it gives you the option to consider all the possibilities and then make the right decision for you. After all, it’s your future. “I would recommend deferring to anyone. If you’re not sure what you want to do, whether that be undertaking study at a tertiary institution such as a university or TAFE, or looking for a job, or even taking time off to relax from study, or travel. “The world is your oyster. So take a step back, breathe and look at the big picture. There is no rush. Just do what you want. Ultimately, you will make the right decision.”

Deferment means that you’ve received an offer to enrol in a course but have been given permission by the institution to delay the start of the course for a fixed period, which is usually six months or one year.

For most institutions, you need to re-apply directly to them and courses may change from year to year. Some institutions charge a fee when you defer. If you need to re-apply through UAC to your deferred course, you must pay the relevant UAC processing charge and late fees.

WHERE IS THE WORK?

Planning your career Making a decision about what type of career you want can be hard, especially if you are new to the workforce or looking to change your career. Below are some simple steps to help you through the decision-making process.

Step 1—self assessment To find a job that will interest you and keep you motivated and challenged, it’s important to understand your own interests, abilities and values.

Your interests • What do you enjoy doing? • What inspires and motivates you? • Skills and abilities you have developed • Education. • Previous employment or work experience.

• Voluntary or charity work.

Step 2—career assessment

• Extracurricular activities (e.g. sport, music, social clubs)

Once you have thought about a few different career paths that may interest you, do some industry research to find out what each career involves.

Values and influences • What aspects of work are important to you? (eg respect, recognition, security, achievement, status, money, gaining or improving skills). • What influences are important to your decision making? (health, family, community). • What working conditions are suitable for your lifestyle? (shift work, local or interstate). • Do you have health issues to consider when planning your career path?

Job outlook • What are the employment prospects? • What are the predictions for the future of the industry? Will the industry grow? • Can you further develop and progress in the career?

The greatest number of new jobs in Victoria is expected to be in health care, social assistance, construction, education and training, according to the Australian Jobs 2011 outlook. The report, on yourcareerguide.com.au, found the three largest employing industries are retail trade, health care and social assistance and manufacturing. Kick start a career CAMPASPE COHUNA LOCAL LEARNING AND EMPLOYMENT NETWORK (CCLLEN) School-based apprenticeships/traineeships are a great pathway into a career. These apprenticeships are undertaken by students who are completing their senior school certificate and combining paid employment as an apprentice or a trainee with off-the-job vocational training. Employers can help students gain hands-on industry experience while meeting skill shortages and planning for future staffing. A number of working hours need to be met as part of the apprenticeship and schedules can be negotiated between the employer, school and student. Undertaking a school-based apprenticeship contributes to a student’s Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) final results.

KENISHA EDWARDS St Joseph’s College year 12 student Kennisha Edwards is in her second year as a school-based apprentice with the Echuca ANZ Bank.

Kennisha said working with customers and other bank staff had greatly improved her people skills and she loved learning about the banking industry. Branch manager Sheryl Campbell said it was great to have a young person on board. “While the staff can offer a lot to Kennisha to support her education, she gives back to them in many ways,” she said.

JAKE BULLOCK Echuca College year 12 student Jake Bullock is completing a certificate 3 in automotive as a school-based apprentice with Haeusler’s Echuca. Jake works one day a week and is at school for the other four days. Jake said he loved the hands-on work opportunity and had been offered a full-time apprenticeship once he completed his VCE at the end of the year. Haeusler’s service manager Michael Bullock said the school-based apprenticeship had provided Jake with many practical skills and a real head start on his chosen career.

She is completing a certificate 2 in business and works at the bank every Wednesday and some school holidays.

gap year A gap year is the year between finishing school and starting further study or training.

You might choose to take a gap year if:  you’re not sure what you want to do in the future;  you don’t get into the course you really want to do;  you want to take a break from studying;  you want to gain skills and experience to get into a course; or  you want to make some money before going to uni/TAFE. There are plenty of things that you can do with yourself during a gap year, including: Travel This could be your chance to take that round-the-world trip you’ve always dreamed about. Visiting other countries and seeing how other people live is a life-changing experience. Just keep in mind that a year-long holiday might be frowned upon by future employers. If you need to explain what you were doing that year, try to describe it in terms of gaining experience and developing new skills. Work Work placements can give you valuable skills and experience. A combination of formal study and on-the-job training looks really good on your resume. If you want to do a degree in fine arts you might first do a short course and then spend some time creating pieces for your folio. If you want to make it big in business you could organise work experience with some successful companies. Volunteer Volunteering is a great way for you to learn new skills while making a positive contribution to the community. You can volunteer on projects close to home or on the other side of the world. You can volunteer by yourself or as part of a team and there are both short-term and long-term placements available, including building homes in Vietnam or preserving Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. Train with the Australian Defence Force The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Gap Year program provides an opportunity for young Australians, who have finished year 12 (or equivalent) within the previous two years, to experience continuous military training and lifestyle before going on to study or a selected career. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime ‘one-year work experience’ program in the Navy or Army, rather than a ‘career’ for life.
