Beechworth Bakery apprentices Ethan Cootes and Kyla Wagner.

Young bakers are on a roll Echuca’s budding young bakers Kyla Wagner and Ethan Cootes gained valuable experience when they took on the industry’s best at the WorldSkills national championships in Sydney, in June. Australia’s most prestigious trade and skills competition attracts apprentices from around the country and across an amazing spectrum of industries. The three-day championships represented more than 60 trades and saw more than 20,000 spectators, 300 judges, 120 volunteers and $10 million worth of materials and equipment descend into the NSW capital. Then across a hectic round of demonstrations competitors spent up to 20 hours battling it out with the nation’s best tradies. Neither Kyla nor Ethan placed, but they have both come away with a wealth of experience to take their careers forward in the future. For Kyla, baking is in her DNA; she comes from a WORDS Sophie Baldwin ADVERTISING Kerry Vevers P: 5482 1111 E: kerry.vevers@riverineherald.com.au GRAPHIC DESIGN Stacey Taylor COVER PHOTO Beechworth Bakery’s Kyla Wagner Photo: Luke Hemer

There was a steep learning curve for pastry but I have always enjoyed the challenge.” Kyla said she really benefited from meeting so many different people, and seeing so many other skills in action and had practiced hard herself to perfect her technique.

Ethan said he hadn’t even been sure what he wanted to do with himself after he finished at school — and that’s when he discovered baking. The 22-year-old had never considered baking for a career — although he was experienced from the customer side of the counter — but said he hasn’t looked back since he started. “I saw it come up, chucked my resume in and here I am,” he said.

“I felt pretty nervous about it all, but the practice we put in made us as ready as we could be,” she said.

“I needed a job so I thought I would give this a go. I’ve really enjoyed it and picked up the skills without too much trouble.

“I already had some experience with competitions but this was an incredibly big event — and opportunity — and in that way provided a good

CVGT AUSTRALIA

Filling the Jobs Gap Established in 1983 in Bendigo, CVGT Australia has been providing employment services for over 30 years. Initially responding to a local governments’ survey which identified a need for employment services for young people looking for apprenticeships in regional Victoria, the business has grown from strength to strength and now employs over 280 people across a diverse range of employment programs and specialties. With offices and consultants across Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales, CVGT Australia is still growing its team of experienced staff and its range of employment services, and the Echuca office is no exception. Craig Canham, local regional manager, explains: “We’ve been in Echuca now for 20+ years. We deliver programs such as Disability Employment Services, Group Training, jobactive, ParentsNext and Transition to Work. We help young people find apprenticeships and traineeships; we help parents get back to work; we assist the unemployed to become job – ready and find employment; we support applicants with a disability, injury or illness in finding and keeping work”. As well as providing services for those seeking work, CVGT actively supports local businesses too. “Many business owners are too busy running their business to come and see us, so Kate Mills, our vacancy officer, visits businesses from Echuca – Moama to Cohuna, Kyabram, Rochester, Deniliquin and surrounding areas to find out more about their business and to list vacancies for them. Kate handles the listings, shortlists the applicants, presents the employer 6

with the top five candidates and even contacts the unsuccessful applicants too,” says Craig. At a time when many businesses seem to be scaling back their regional presence, CVGT Australia is creating more jobs, opening more locations and assisting more regional businesses than ever before. For job seekers, CVGT regularly has vacancies for a variety of roles, accessible via their website or via the local office job board. Tristan Nevin, Echuca branch manager and his team are conveniently located at 216 Darling Street, Echuca — opposite Coles. The office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm and job seekers can drop by any time during business hours to view the job board or to speak with a team member, without the need for an appointment. Employers interested in listing a vacancy through CVGT can give Kate a call on 0447 100 793 or by calling 13 CVGT (13 2848) and asking for the Echuca-Moama office. Kate will make a time to visit you, find out more about your business and staffing needs and help you fast – track your employment process.

CAREERS, EDUCATION & TRAINING 2018

Did you know? CVGT Australia has significantly expanded its Disability Employment Services (DES) since July 1, 2018. They’re now able to offer more specialised consultants, more one-on-one support and link more potential employees with employers. If you think you, or someone you know, may qualify for DES, get in touch with the Echuca-Moama team today. Employers interested in employing someone with disability may be eligible for some great incentives. Ask the team how today. Employment is an essential part of life for most of us. Holding down a job gives us a reason to get up every morning, it puts food on our tables, enables our children to participate in sports, allows us luxuries like travel, technology and entertainment, but most of all it has the ability to really strengthen our sense of self-worth — something we’re not always aware of until it’s taken away. A good job gives us challenges to overcome, responsibility and, if we’re lucky, a sense of community as well. Whether you’re returning to work, starting out, or need an extra pair of hands, take the first step in filling the gap in your life. If you, or someone you know, is looking for work (or for workers) give CVGT a go – in the last financial year they’ve worked for 7,800 people, they might just work for you too!

PRESBYTERIAN LADIES’ COLLEGE

Offering girls a home away from home Abbey Weise has been boarding at Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Melbourne (PLC) for four years. Abbey grew up on a farm in a rural area where the closest school was an hour away. She and her parents felt that boarding would provide her with a wider range of opportunities. Together they decided on PLC because of the school’s emphasis on the performing arts, a passion of Abbey’s, as well as its diverse sports program. Abbey began attending PLC in Year 7 and says boarding has made the process of schooling and life at school much easier. She and her friends work, help each other and spend time together after school and on weekends.

School counsellors are on hand to provide emotional support for the girls and regularly check in with new boarders to see how they’re adjusting. Activities and day trips are organised at the beginning of each year, allowing boarders to get to know each other, and a leadership committee of students helps guide how the Boarding House is run. Stuart Manderson, PLC’s head of boarding, says there are over 80 girls boarding at the school. “The advantage of having all girls is that the girls can be a bit less inhibited and willing to try new things,” he says.

“If you need help, usually you’ve got a friend somewhere else doing the exact same thing, so you can just go up to them,” she says. Boarding has also enabled Abbey to develop life skills and gain a sense of independence. Abbey is a member of PLC’s rowing crew, involved in the up-coming school production of Daisy Pulls It Off and being a boarder has enriched these and so many other experiences in a variety of ways. “I love it,” she says. “It’s like you’ve got so many sisters you can turn to, and you come home from school and you’ve always got your friends there.” The boarders also enjoy pizza nights and movies together on weekends, as well as co-curricular programs and sports matches. If they want to go out, they get a permission slip and are free to undertake activities such as visiting friends, shopping, and seeing exhibitions.

Boarding life at PLC Boarding at PLC offers country girls a place to live, learn and be inspired all within a safe and supportive Christian community. Come join us!

A career with sesame seeds on top environment for prospective employees.

For many young people in Echuca-Moama working at McDonald’s is a handy part time job.

been before and a lot of that comes down to the training the company has offered me.”

But for one of them, it has become far more than just pocket money.

With more than 900 outlets Australia-wide McDonald’s said they were always looking for motivated and passionate people to join their crews.

For Cameron Hay McDonald’s has become a career. He was one of the last people to be employed by the franchise at 14 years and 9 months (the age is now 15) and nine years later he is still there, although he worked his way up from his original role as a crew member.

“We have a lot of young kids coming through,” he said.

Cameron said McDonald’s offered a very flexible work

“McDonald’s is great because it is flexible with sport and schooling. “We even have university students who come back and work with us over the holidays.”

Today Cameron is the store manager and his job description includes payroll, weekly results, labour and service quality. Not knowing what he wanted to do when he initially finished school, Cameron jumped at the chance of a fulltime role at the Echuca store. “I had planned a gap year because I had no idea what I actually wanted to do,” he said. “So when McDonald’s offered me a full time crew position, well that took the worry out of finding a job and since I started the opportunities have kept coming for me and I am still here today.” Cameron said working for McDonald’s has provided him with a rewarding workplace and plenty of new skills through on-the-job training. “Over the years I have been to many different courses and I have been able to work on improving my presentation skills,” he added. “I am certainly more confident today than I ever have

endigo TAFE’s Echuca campus on the corner of Hare and Darling Streets offers students a modern facility close to home.

Bendigo TAFE has a proud history of providing education and training for local people and preparing them for local jobs. With an emphasis on practical training, industry projects and work placements, students gain real experience and the latest industry knowledge. Hands-on practical training and classroom learning combine to ensure that graduates have the skills that employers are looking for.

Bendigo TAFE has established a vast network of industry partners and a strong reputation with employers across Echuca and regional Victoria. By developing courses in consultation with industry, Bendigo TAFE ensures students can gain the most current and up-to-date skills. Strong relationships with local businesses allow Bendigo TAFE to offer work placements, which often lead to ongoing employment upon graduation.

INvEsTINg IN THE skIlls OF THE FUTURE

During the past six-months, a $477,000 funding boost from the State Government has enabled campus upgrades as well as the lowering of some tuition fees to train the next generation of builders, plumbers and electricians within the Echuca region. Bendigo TAFE CEO Trevor Schwenke welcomed the new funding for Echuca by saying: “Investment in local training delivery also benefits Echuca employers by providing access to locally based trade training and Bendigo TAFE graduates”.

PROUDLY TAFE. Registered Training Organisation No. 3077. Some or all of this training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.

The funding was provided under the Regional and Specialist Training Fund, part of the government’s Skills First initiative. Skills First is about delivering training that responds to industryled demand for specific skills and specialist areas that are not currently being met in the training market. With expected residential growth throughout the Echuca region, there will be an increased demand for skilled plumbers, builders and electricians.

Bendigo TAFE is working with the support of local businesses to help ensure there are enough apprentices to meet this demand. The funding is helping to address this need by providing increased pre-apprenticeship training provision within the Certificate II in Building and Construction (22216VIC), Certificate II in Plumbing (22304VIC) and Certificate II in Electrotechnology Studies (22261VIC) programs. The funding has also gone towards the purchase of industry related tools and equipment along with the development of new, flexible training resources and assessment materials specifically for the Echuca campus. In addition, the State Government has also increased its subsidy for these courses, meaning lower tuition fees for students.

Study areas include animal studies, health and community, culinary, trades, indigenous studies, Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP), teacher training, work health and safety, foundations and pathways including Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). A purpose-built restaurant and commercial kitchen provide the perfect hands-on environment for learning the practical skills required for commercial cookery, hospitality, travel and tourism. Specialist trade training facilities, complete with the latest equipment prepares building and construction pre-apprentices with the practical hands-on experience and the knowledge needed to gain a valuable head start when they move into a carpentry apprenticeship. With a strong focus on Indigenous education, Bendigo TAFE aim to offer a range of culturally appropriate courses and training pathways for Indigenous people and communities in a supportive manner to ensure that each student has the best possible educational experience. Indigenous Engagement and Capacity Building Officers are locally based and able to assist and refer students to appropriate networks across the region. An alternative to secondary schooling with a pathway to employment or further study, VCAL has a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, while also providing

MOAMA ANGLICAN GRAMMAR

A classy career MOAMA Anglican Grammar School offers timetabled careers classes and participation in the Echuca Moama Beacon Foundation and its events at Year 9. Initial lessons focus on students developing a greater awareness and understanding of themselves as they identify their strengths, skills and abilities. Students are also asked to assess the various influences on their life and consider their goals for the future. We then continue lessons to help students prepare for the Beacon events and provide an opportunity to reflect on how these activities can inform their career development. In May this year students attended the Beacon Careers Expo with more than 50 local businesses and organisations represented. In early August we take our students through the Beacon mock interview process, relying on volunteers from the local business community in co-operation with the Campaspe Cohuna Local Learning and Employment Network (CCLLEN). This is an opportunity for each Year 9 student to experience an interview situation and receive feedback to help them develop these skills further. Beacon and CCLLEN with volunteers and our staff

provide students with essential preparation and feedback through the interview sessions. After this introduction to the world of employment the focus of lessons changes and becomes focused on individual career exploration using information gained from the mock interview, the Beacon leadership program and the Careers Expo – as well as the information they gain from parents and family members. Our students are encouraged to explore and investigate as many options and pathways as possible – nothing is impossible. The focus in Year 10 and beyond moves to individual students as they begin to make plans

and choices for their futures. This is achieved through a range of strategies including an individual career assessment program which provides a specific report for each student making suggestions about possible pathways and choices. Year 10s also participate in a four-day careers camp in Melbourne; visiting university campuses and developing an understanding of tertiary study – including the demands of living away from home. For Year 10 the careers program culminates in work experience at the end of the year, an opportunity to ‘test drive’ their choices at this stage.

BYFORD EQUIPMENT

An employment opportunity that keeps on growing BYFORD Equipment has been employing a large cross section of the Echuca-Moama community for almost 15 years. From humble beginnings in a farm shed in 1975, when founders Gary and Irene Byford began repairing milk tankers for Kraft Foods as a sideline to their dairy business, the company has grown to include a move from Strathmerton to Moama and a shed to a 6 ha site employing more than 100 people. As an industry-leader in innovative solutions for transport, Byfords work closely with operators to design, fabricate and repair tankers, silos and vessels for some of Australia’s leading names in the food, wine and chemicals industries. National sales and compliance manager Chris Nisbet said the company offered great opportunities for prospective employees.

“As a company we are very focused on training and improvement,” Chris said.

Innovation is deeply ingrained in the company’s corporate DNA and they are always changing the game with every new product release.

computer controlled retractable hose reels, which has changed the game and set the innovation bar high. Chris said a company of their size required diversity in employees from administration staff and engineers through to painters and truck detailers. “We are a diverse operation and we have many different fields on offer for our existing staff and future employees,” he added. “We take pride in our workplace and the products we produce and we are a great place to start, or continue, a career.”
