Matt Templeton awaits judging in the IDW ring with Avonlea Reginald Jacobonia.

Jacobonia aids a return to form T

here are many ways to describe a good show. For Matt and Nicola Templeton, taking out grand champion cow with Avonlea Reginald Jacobonia is certainly one of them. Add to that a second place in Holstein senior 2 class and first place win and best udder in the intermediate red and white show with Cairnsdale Absolute Red Delight — Red, a class win and honourable mention in senior 3 with Coomboona Pety Satin, a third place in a strong senior

4 //

Holstein milk class with Burn — Brae Samuelo Peachy and a class win and best udder in the senior jersey class with Adadale Tequila Primrose 7 and you would have to agree with Matt when he says it was a ‘pretty awesome’ result. “Everything just came together this year for us,” Matt said. Success for the couple has come off the back of a pretty tough year that saw Matt receive some intensive treatment for cancer; his beloved cows were always a huge driver for recovery.

ALL BREEDS DAIRY JOURNAL VOLUME 66 MARCH 2020 – MAY 2020

“I would think about Jacobonia and Satin and even though we don’t make a great living out of them, they are definitely a driver to get me out of bed every day,” Matt said. Unable to show at IDW last year due to sickness, Matt was walking around the sheds looking at cows when he came across Jacobonia in the Avonlea string. “I saw her standing there and I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I rang John to see if he would sell and he came back to me a day later and said yes,” Matt said.

IDW’s Grand Champion Cow for 2020 is Avonlea Reginald Jacoboina owned by the Templeton family from Tarwin.

“I have some nice young cows coming through and even though it is great to buy some good cow in, I am looking forward to breeding my own and seeing where that will take us.”

Matt said Jacobonia hasn’t skipped a beat since. “Jacobonia is a great cow to work with — she has such balance and dairy quality and she is no fuss. She is one of those cows that looks good but also pays her way and she even runs with the other cows in the herd some of the time.” Holstein judge Brent Walker said Jacobonia was one of those good cows the world was trying to breed. “She certainly fits the new mould. You don’t need a great big tall cow, width is where it matters, and great feet and legs to walk to the dairy and she was just it for me,” Brent said. Matt said he bought Pety Satin from the Coomboona dispersal sale 18 months ago. “She is a cow with a very bright future. Her frame and the way she is made are faultless and I don’t think I have ever had a young cow as good as her before,” he said. Matt said he showed the aged cow Samuelo Peachy for his parents — a cow purchased from the Mackie brothers at Meeniyan. “Dad is always giving me a hard time about showing but he secretly likes it and for her to stand third in a strong mature class was a great achievement,” he said.

“Peachy was also a favourite standing in the stalls when people came to look at our line, everyone was commenting on how much they liked her.” Matt said the success with Primrose 7 was a great thrill for the Paulger family (Nicola’s maiden name) because Nicola bought the cow down to Victoria from her family home in Queensland. Absolute Red Delight is owned in partnership with Stuart Menzies. “Stuart and I have owned and bred cattle together for the past 12 years and for her to stand first place red and white intermediate was great.” Matt laughs as he says he will try and do it all again next year. “I have some nice young cows coming through and even though it is great to buy some good cow in, I am looking forward to breeding my own and seeing where that will take us.” Matt has his fingers crossed the string is pregnant but if not, he might leave Jacobonia and flush her. “We have a few cows calving at the moment that haven’t been shown before and hopefully they will find their way to the Winter Fair.”

t was another great Holstein show for the Elmar team from Leitchville. intermediate interbreed win. The two-year-old in milk class was once again a strong line-up and the team was delighted when Elmar Crush Lulu-ET placed second. Steve and Deanne Hore said the twoyear old class was always strong and it was great to go one and two and even better to see their boys Marty and Brady standing side by side in the ring. “Jessica five is probably one of the most correct young cows we have ever bred,” Steve said. “She is more developed than her mother Jessica 11, who was Grand Champion cow and supreme Holstein at IDW in 2018.” Steve said it was also great to have a win with a cow they hadn’t shown before. “There is always a sense of expectation when we show the Jessica family because there is always a lot of interest in the line and it was great to see Jessica 5 go well this year,” Deanne said. Elmar also took home a third in senior three-year-old in milk with Kaarmona Goldwyn Marigold 12 VG88, a sixth in four-year-old with Elmar Firstclass Jessica VG87, a fifth in five-year-old class with Elmar Goldendream Serenade EX91 1E, a third in pen of three females and third in two daughters of the same dam (Jessica 11).

Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7- the grand champion jersey and reserve interbreed champion for 2020.

No end to Dawn’s winning streak W

indy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7 has an unbeatable record at IDW. She won junior 2 in 2018, intermediate Jersey champion 2019 and grand champion Jersey and reserve interbreed in 2020 — she has never been beaten in her class. Part-owner Frank Walsh from Windy Ways Tongala said he has grown to expect the four-year old to perform in the ring. “She stood up well in the ring again this year and if we can keep getting her back to IDW, I think she can keep

8 //

winning — she just gets better and better each year.” Frank laughed. There is no denying Dawn has had a good year in the ring, taking out champion cow and interbreed champion at Sydney. She is also doing well in the herd with current production sitting about 30 litres, making her one of the top-producing cows in the herd. Currently classified EX 93, up from EX90, Frank said she was a special cow that has stood out from the start. A chrome heifer calf she had last year is looking like following in her footsteps, with

Frank saying she is a standout amongst the 100 calves. Frank purchased the foundation cow of the Dawn family 20 years ago. The greatgrandmother to Dawn 7 was purchased for $1400 and went on to produce 496 kgs of butterfat in a 296-day lactation — a trait she has passed on down the generations. Frank said the win did bring a few tears to his eyes and has given him the inspiration to keep going for a few years longer. “My grandson Mitchell is doing a great job and the farm is in pretty good hands.”

Campbells finish up on a high W

hen Trevor and Julie Campbell decided to sell their Jimann Jersey herd it was the culmination of 53 years of breeding. While it was time for the couple to move on from the dairy industry and enjoy a much-deserved retirement, there were two cows they couldn’t quite part with. One of them was IDW’s intermediate Jersey champion, best udder and interbreed reserve champion Jimann Tequila Maree. It has been a great year for the senior three-year-old in milk, winning intermediate champion at Rochester and the northern Victorian On-Farm Challenge, coming third overall in the state final. Maree spent six weeks with Brad and Jess Gavenlock in preparation for the show — Brad said she was just one of those cows that found that extra 10 per cent on show day and looked amazing. Trevor and Julie were happy with a class win, excited by a champion win and

ecstatic with a reserve interbreed. “The win feels like a pinnacle,” Julie said. “There were two things we always wanted to achieve, a win in the Great Southern Challenge and an IDW broad ribbon and now we have done both — we just thought a class ribbon was a great achievement.” Trevor said that when they sold their herd, Maree was just too good to get lost in the system. He can remember buying the foundation cows of the Jimann herd when he was a 16-year-old kid. “I bought 11 yearlings for $60 in the late 1960s,” Trevor said. Julie added that it must have been a lot of money back then because they were still paying the loan off when they got married a few years later. “Mandy 3 was a cow that lived to 22 years old — she was a 90-point cow back in 1974 and a lot of good cows descend from her,” Trevor said.

UDSON Jennings from Chapple Vale can’t ask too much more of Rusty Red Liner Georgie-RED — his best

cow. Not only has she given him six, sexedsemen calves, the seven-year old is now champion red and white and grand champion red and white for 2020. A fitting way to end her show career and enter retirement. The fact she didn’t make it to IDW last year because she had been sick with mastitis made her return even more special. “I didn’t think I would get her quarter back,” Judson said. Rusty Red has always held her own standing top 10 amongst the black and whites — this is the first time she has shown in a red and white show. “The judge said he loved her frame and openness “She is a friendly giant but very bossy as the people who worked with her at the show found out. She likes to give you a head butt every now and then if you get too close to her,” he said. Judson said he can’t fault his best cow

who just keeps getting in calf year after year. “I am unsure of the plans for her future, but I am over the moon with how she went this year. I will retire the old girl now; she deserves a rest. She is in calf to sexed Unstoppable and I can’t believe how she holds to sexed semen first go.” Rusty Red had two daughters at the show — Reserve Junior Champion Red and White Rusty Red Jordy George-RED who went on to receive Honourable Mention in the Holstein class. Jordy George is owned in partnership with Mal Nikora. “She placed first in her class overall against the black and whites and we were very happy with that.” Two-year-old Rusty Red Diamond Becky-ET-RED, owned by Ricky Nelson, Zac Anderson and Judson, was honourable mention intermediate red and white champion. “It was a really good red and white show this year. Entries and quality were up, and I think anyone would be happy to take home any of the cows on show this year and milk them in their herds.”

Heidi takes title at tenth attempt I

t doesn’t matter how many times you attend Dairy Week and it doesn’t matter how much success you have had previously, there are always nerves — even when you are Ben Govett from Tandara Brown Swiss. Ben is no stranger to IDW success amongst the breed, having won grand champion cow six years in a row, but this year with his mature cow team, he says for some reason he was unusually nervous. “I don’t know why but leading up to this show I was the least confident I have felt in a while,” Ben said. Not that he should have worried — Tandara owned or bred animals featured in the top three in every class except for

12 //

honourable mention junior champion. Ben said he was particularly pleased with Tandara Etvei Heidi 217 winning grand champion Brown Swiss exhibit — this was the 10th show for the IDW veteran and her first grand champion win. In her nine previous IDW shows, she had never placed lower than second in her class and she had gone on to win reserve intermediate champion, reserve champion and best udder of show. Heidi is in her seventh lactation and has produced more than 70,000 litres of milk. “As far as a milking cow goes, she has been trouble-free, having only every had mastitis and foot rot once in her life — she is a super dairy cow, trouble-free and has a pretty good udder,” Ben said.

ALL BREEDS DAIRY JOURNAL VOLUME 66 MARCH 2020 – MAY 2020

It has taken 10 shows but finally Tandara Etvei Heidi was crowned champion Brown Swiss exhibit. Ben is pictured with partner Michaela Shrimpton and son Cooper.

Two days before the show she was also announced as the Victorian winner of the On-Farm Challenge by judge Brian Leslie. “Heidi has been reserve champion a few times so it was really great for her to win after 10 years,” Ben said. Ben said Heidi’s only fault was her distaste for the wash bay. “She doesn’t love the show life like the other cows, I think she prefers life on the farm,” Ben laughed. Judge Kevin Ziemba said he could have given the senior champion ribbon to any one of the three great cows — Etvei Heidi 217, Mobby Sarajevo 101 or Miss Payssli Lola. “I was proud of the fact we presented such a strong line,” Ben said.

T

here is always a story behind every cow at International Dairy Week, including Brown Swiss Bridge View

Lola. The 23-month-old heifer was the only animal to win a broad ribbon in the Brown Swiss show that was not Tandara Brown Swiss owned or bred. Bridge View Lola, owned by Damien Doecke and fiancé Candice Kole from Woods Point, South Australia, was named honourable mention junior champion. “We call her Lady Lola, and my fiancé and I have had a lot of fun with her,” Damien said. Lady Lola won class 4 — dry heifer born 1/1/18–30/06/18. “We are thrilled with her class win and honourable mention because we didn’t have any huge expectations for her,” Damien said. “The judge described her as a strong powerful heifer and that is exactly what she is, although she might have been a little too fat at IDW,” he laughed. Her weight issue might come from the fact she spends her days in and around the house garden as a family pet. Having said that, Lady Lola did place fourth in the interbreed show at Royal Adelaide last year. “Hopefully she will have a good future ahead of her and I can’t wait to see what happens once she calves — I am not sure if she will end up in the dairy though, Candice seems to think she might stay with us and get milked as a house cow,” Damien said. The Doecke family are no strangers to showing success with their Springvale Illawarra stud (Springvale Pride 29 is the 2020 reserve champion Illawarra) but considering they only have six Brown Swiss amongst their 300 Illawarras, Lady Lola’s

success is even more special. Lady Lola is the daughter of a cow the family purchased from Robbie Raddle from Mountainview Brown Swiss. “We were buying some Illawarras and ended up with a few Brown Swiss, one of which is Lady Lola’s mum,” Damien said. “We have had a lot of Illawarra breeders hang it on us with Lady Lola, but she really has been a lot of fun for us. She has been a great way for Candice, who is not from a farming background, to find her way in the dairy industry and she did a lot of the work clipping and preparing her for IDW.” Candice moved to the farm two years ago where she first met Lady Lola as a calf. “I fell in love with her straight away and my first thought was she’s so pretty; as I’m a hairdresser that’s what came to mind,” Candice said. Candice said Lady Lola has always been treated like a pet. “We developed a bond where we play chasey around the chicken pen and became best friends — meeting Lola has opened me to love this breed and now the passion to grow,” she said. Candice spent five months disciplining Lola to learn to lead, along with herself as she was a complete beginner — Lady Lola might have been the only Brown Swiss at her first show at Adelaide, but Candice said she led her with love. A fourth intermediate placing gave the couple the inspiration to take Lady Lola to IDW. “We didn’t know what to expect at IDW, but we are extremely happy with her result — we must give credit to Damien’s father Warren Doecke for helping with the breeding and genetics on the farm,” Candice said.

Grand Champion Ayrshire Hillcrest Ambush Bangle.

Bangle’s road to success G

reg and Kim Wilson only purchased Hillcrest Ambush Bangle in October 2019, but the Ayrshire has already had a pretty busy schedule. Travelling from Queensland down to her new home at Irrewillipe in south-west Victoria, across to Tallygaroopna for preparations for IDW, to Tatura and then back home again — all within four months. The travel has all been worth it after the seven-year-old Ayrshire won her in milk class, best udder, champion cow and grand champion Ayrshire exhibit. Greg said it had always been a family dream to own a cow from the famed Bangle family after his dad and brother saw Rockvale Conn Bangle win supreme champion exhibit at IDW in 2013. “Conn Bangle is the grandmother of Ambush Bangle and that is the reason we bid on her at the Hillcrest dispersal sale,”

14 //

Greg said. The family also bought a Bangle yearling and another older cow from Hillcrest, bringing their Ayrshire grand total to four, amongst 1000 Holstein and cross-bred cows. There are firm plans of increasing Ayrshire numbers and after flushing Bangle and receiving seven eggs, they are well on the way. Greg said buying Bangle and trucking her down to Victoria did come with some risks, but they all went unfounded. “We really didn’t know how Bangle would go but she hit the ground running and integrated into the herd with no worries at all,” he said. Shortly after, she entered the Western District Ayrshire Cattle Club on-farm challenge, which she won, and went on to win champion cow.

“I asked a couple of people if they thought she could go to IDW,” Greg said. “Brad from Cherrylock Cattle Co came down and had a look at her and he thought she had potential, so we sent her up to him in December.” Greg said Ambush Bangle was a great cow with qualities you would like in any cow breed. “She walks well and in a herd of 1000, that’s essential. She has good capacity, is a long cow and is all dairy, she is real quality.” Greg and Kim made the trip up to watch her in the ring on the Tuesday and returned to see her perform again in the interbreed on Thursday. “She looked really good on Tuesday and even thought I thought she had no chance on the Thursday in interbreed, it was magnificent to see her out there and she really held her own.”

he crowning of champion intermediate Ayrshire Hillcrest Jumper Lorette VG88 might have come as a surprise in some ways for Boldview Farms Scott Braendler after purchasing the three-year old from the Hillcrest dispersal sale in Queensland last October. Scott said Lorette was well grown for her age, had an awesome udder and was correct all the way through; he needn’t have worried about her depth of body for age in comparison to her size (which he thought could have been an issue) — judge Francois Beaudry thought she ticked all the boxes. Boldview paid a breed-high price of $21,000 for Lorette after missing out on her dam Hillcrest Hammer Lorette, EX 92, 4E in the Hillcrest sale. “We love the udder and all roundness of this family, which was a real push for us to get some of these characteristics into our herd,” Scott said. Scott said that to have a win in such a strong show was fantastic and in his role as Ayrshire president, he was extremely

proud of the show that exhibitors put together for feature breed this year. He praised all exhibitors, including those from NSW and northern Victoria who have been experiencing one of the toughest seasons on record, and yet still managed to send quality cattle to the show. “Exhibitors made a special effort to get their best cows to Tatura and it was a big show full of quality cows,” he said. “It was great to have the Ayrshire World Conference come to Australia and see such a strong line-up of cattle — everybody was blown away by the quality and there has been no negative feedback at all.” Scott said the Ayrshire breed was gaining popularity and a show as outstanding as this year’s IDW was a credit to the breed. He said the sale was also well supported, with top-priced Geelunga Burdette Dea selling for $10,000.00. The 20 sale lots averaged a record $4437.50 while embryo lots found their way to countries all over the world.

Freda finds winning form

Zoe and Tony Hayes (left) from Llandovery Illawarra celebrate Llandovery Guses Freda junior champion and interbreed win with reserve interbreed Jersey Philmar FC Upto Mischief, Andy Cullen.

nternational Dairy Week just got better and better for Illawarra Llandovery Guses Freda. Owned by the Hayes family from Girgarre, she was good enough to win Illawarra junior champion on Tuesday and then turn around on Thursday and take out interbreed junior champion. It was Freda’s first show and while the family thought she looked handy; they had no idea she would do so well. “As the week progressed, she just got better and better and as she settled into the show, she looked the best she ever has,” Zoe said. Zoe said on the day of interbreed judging she got someone to ring her dad who was home working on the farm. “I thought maybe Freda had a shot at reserve and I wanted dad to be there, but when we won champion interbreed it was very exciting. That was the first time we had ever had an interbreed win,” Zoe said. Zoe said Freda doesn’t come from one of their more typical show families but rather an old foundation family. “Freda’s mum placed third in her class as a heifer, but we sold her, and she went to Queensland. Freda has those modern dairy characteristics that everyone is looking

18 //

for — she is dairy right through but still has the strength to make up a very good cow.” Zoe said it is exciting for the breed in general to see an Illawarra animal compete so well in the ring and win top spot. Reserve junior champion Llandovery Foremans Betty is another new member of the show team the Hayes family are looking forward to working with. “She has had two class wins at IDW and it was good for her to win reserve,” she said. Reserve Intermediate Champion Llandovery Foremans Betty is owned by the Hayes family and their worker Charlie Lloyd. “It was great for him as an up-andcoming young breeder to have some show success and it was exciting for us.” Zoe said IDW 2020 was full of ups and downs — cows they thought would perform might not have done so well while others did. “It was a show of mixed emotions but overall we are happy with the result and it was another great week.” On a personal note Zoe said she was excited to win the state judging which will see her go on to compete at the National final in New Zealand in October.

hen Shane Bourke and Matt Henry visited IDW last year they took the opportunity to take a trip out to Whorouly to take a peek at the famed Ovensdale herd of Robert and Maree Newton. The family were holding a complete dispersal sale of their Illawarra herd and standing out in the paddock, Ovensdale Pearl took their eye. “She was the best ‘type’ cow in the paddock,” Shane said. Tough times in the Queensland dairy industry had already seen the mates buy a couple of cows together and they decided to add Pearl to their syndicate. It was a fortuitous move. The six-year-old is now IDW grand champion Illawarra exhibit for 2020. Shane and Matt purchased Pearl in March last year and by the end of April she had found her way to Queensland, calved, had a bull who will most likely be collected, and settled into life in the sunshine state. “We entered Pearl in the Gatton show where she won the Illawarra show and supreme all breed and best udder,” Shane said. As time went on Pearl continued to hold form and the boys decided to bring her down to Tatura — an 18-hour oneway trip. “We stopped overnight at the Forbes show ground, milked her there and then spent the lead up to the show with the Hayes family at Girgarre. “Pearl is a great traveller and she didn’t miss a beat. She doesn’t stop and if you keep the feed up to her, she will just keep eating,” he said. Getting Pearl up and ready to walk the ring at IDW might have been a long haul but the mates said they would do it all again if they had a cow that was good enough. Interestingly Pearl alternates between Matt’s farm and Shane’s — Matt has a herringbone and Shane has a rotary, but she doesn’t seem to care which shed or herd she is miked in. “She doesn’t hesitate to get on the rotary as long as there is food in front of her, she is happy,” he said.

Significant dairy industry contributors and Bette Hall award winners Jenny Gray, Pam Malcolm, Trish McGraw (2020 winner) Lisa Broad and Lyn Boyd.

McGraw honoured with Bette Hall award

E

very year, IDW celebrates a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the dairy industry through the Bette Hall Power of Women in Dairy Award for Excellence. In 2020 Trish McGraw joined former winners Lisa Broad, Pam Malcolm, Jenny Gray and Lyn Boyd. Trish grew up at Nirranda South in the Western District on her parents’ Lincrest Jersey and Charmwoods Guernsey Studs. Her earliest childhood memories involve exhibiting cattle at Melbourne Royal, ensuring her love of showing and good cattle was developed from a very young age. In the late ‘70s/early ‘80s as a single mother she wanted her children to have the same great experience showing cattle as she had growing up, so she developed a very successful red poll stud that saw her crowned most successful exhibitor at Melbourne Royal nine times. In 1986 she teamed up with husband Stuart McGraw and settled in Gippsland

20 //

where together they developed the very successful Glen Afton Ayrshire stud. The couple milked 100 cows through a walk-through. Trish was very hands-on and heavily involved in all of the breeding decisions. She loved studying pedigrees and wasn’t afraid to invest in the best, purchasing Brookfield Belle Star for $7500 at Merv Burgmann’s dispersal, an Australian record at the time. Trish laughs as she said Stuart’s eyes got bigger and bigger as the price for Belle Star crept up and up. The Glen Afton Stud soon became the third highest Ayrshire production herd in the country as their success in the show ring continued to rise. The couple dominated Melbourne Royal’s Ayrshire Show in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, with best udder, champion cow, intermediate and junior champion awards. In the centenary year of the Ayrshire Society (1991), they bred and owned champion cow Glen Afton Lucy Patsy.

ALL BREEDS DAIRY JOURNAL VOLUME 66 MARCH 2020 – MAY 2020

In the mid-’90s the world Ayrshire Conference was held in the US and a call was put out for embryos — Brookfield Belle Star was selected to represent Australia and the McGraw’s became the first stud to export Ayrshire embryos to America. Trish has always been involved in her local Ayrshire club and loves to promote the breed. She has always been passionate about helping youth and has been involved with VASV, organising and providing cows for junior judging competitions at local and state level. In 1993 she drove kids up to Hurlstone Ag School (near Sydney) to participate in an Ayrshire youth camp, where she stayed and helped the whole week — the following year she started up her own at Lang Lang, which was a huge success. Now 80-years-young she is just as passionate about the Ayrshire Breed as she was years ago and continues to promote and develop the cows and breed she so very much loves.

Cherrylock hits the spots at IDW B

rad and Jessica Gavenlock from Cherrylock Cattle Co, Tallygaroopna, are still smiling after IDW 2020 became their best show ever. It’s a huge achievement to just take a team of 41 head to Tatura let alone have every single animal finish top 10. Add to that 13 class wins, 26 top three finishes, 13 championships and 7 best udders in class and no wonder Brad describes the week simply as amazing. “December 5 to January 25 is just a

22 //

blur for us,” Brad said. “It is pretty full on as preparation consumes our life and it was just a huge relief to get 41 animals out in the ring and on time.” The show began with a bang for Cherrylock when Hillcrest Ambush Bangle owned by Greg and Kim Wilson from Irrewillipe was crowned champion cow and grand champion Ayrshire exhibit in a strong field. “Greg and Kim hadn’t shown before and it took a lot of work to get Bangle ready for

ALL BREEDS DAIRY JOURNAL VOLUME 66 MARCH 2020 – MAY 2020

the show, which made her win even more rewarding for us all,” Brad said. Winning junior champion Brown Swiss with Tandara Superstar Sarajevo 146 and the Drop Bear syndicate was another highlight. “We bought her at our Fast Track to Success sale when Jessica fell in love with her. I was lukewarm on the idea until I heard the name of our syndicate and then I was in. It was a bit of fun with a few friends and it was great to have that win,” he said.

Feature // The syndicate now has plans of taking the nine-month old to Sydney in April. Brad said a personal highlight for the couple was Panorama Angeline 48 taking out intermediate champion. “That is her fourth championship in a row, and she has never been beaten at IDW,” Brad said. The fact the couple ended up with Angeline at all was a miracle in itself. “I bought Angeline as a birthday present for Jess from Keith Dorries. I had the pick of the herd but when I selected her Keith had already donated her for a raffle prize,” Brad said.

“I got into Holsteins to prove a mate wrong and we have had some pretty good ones since.” In a fortuitous turn for the Gavenlock’s, the lady who won the raffle didn’t like the colour of the heifer and chose a different animal, leaving Brad and Jessica with Angeline. The win of grand champion Jersey exhibit Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7, owned by Cherrylock and Frank Walsh from Tongala was another highlight. “Dawn is one of those cows that could just show herself, she is that good. She has never been beaten at IDW either,” Brad said. Brad said one of the surprise wins of the show came with intermediate champion Jimann Tequila Maree, owned by Trevor and Julie Campbell from Rochester. “She was one of those cows that found that extra 10 per cent and chose the right day to peak,” he said. “It was no surprise when we got her out in the ring because she looked great out there, but if you had of said to me a week before she was going to be intermediate champion I would have been surprised.” Brad said up until eight years ago he never even owned a Holstein. “I got into Holsteins to prove a mate wrong and we have had some pretty good ones since.” Cherrylock Chassity Innocence backed up her Winter Fair win in 2019 with the same at IDW taking out junior champion Holstein Heifer. “We also bred the reserve junior champion Cherrylock BH Apple Cider-Red who was sold to a syndicate and that felt pretty good too,” Brad said. Cherrylock have quite a few of their Holsteins calving. Brad said it took a lot of hard work to breed a good cow and having genetics from some of the best cow families in the country certainly helped. “In the Brown Swiss we have the Sarajevo family while for the Illawarras we have the Angelines — both these families can be traced back to decades of great cows,” he said.

Rockmar Miami Graceful owned by Mark and Roxanne Shae.

Twice as nice for Rockmar I

t was double the victory for Mark and Roxanne Shae from Rockmar Guernseys from Bacchus Marsh with Rockmar Pilot Madison winning junior champion and Rockmar Miami Graceful winning best udder and senior champion cow. Considering the dairy herd consists of just 20 milkers, quality is obviously not an issue in the Shae herd. Mark said Pilot Madison was all-breed heifer at Geelong last October and her mother Rockmar Crosby Graceful was reserve champion at IDW in 2016. “She always showed potential as a young calf and is looking like a good heifer,” Mark said. When six-year-old Rockmar Miami Graceful calved down, Mark also thought she was looking the goods for another run at IDW. His intuition was on the money when judge Grant Liebelt pronounced her champion Guernsey. Miami Graceful is no stranger to having

a ribbon hanging around her neck; in 2017 she was reserve intermediate Guernsey, 2018 champion Guernsey and in 2019 reserve champion. The VG88 cow has only given the Shae’s one heifer — Rockmar Lexus Graceful, she was intermediate champion at the Geelong Show last year. Mark is the third generation of the Shae family to show the Guernsey breed. The family may no longer milk commercially, but they have been able to turn their love for the Guernsey breed into a hobby and the 20-odd milkers are certainly enough to keep them on their toes. Up until IDW, Darby Norris only had one Guernsey but she was a good one — intermediate champion Gilbert Sigrid 20. The 2.5-year-old heifer was also named best udder in class prompting Darby to label the show fantastic. “Sigrid has a wonderful frame. I purchased her with Digby Gribble from

the UK in a 2018 sale because we liked her body, longevity and production of the cow family, which is always important,” Digby said. Sigrid is currently producing 40 litres a day after her first calving. “She certainly knows how to milk,” he said. Darby said it was exciting to have his grandkids and daughter at the show to witness the success of Sigrid. Daughter Sarah Powles is the fourth generation of the family to be involved with Guernseys, with Darby’s grandfather first becoming involved with the breed back in the 1930s. Darby decided to add to his Guernsey herd with the purchase of Donny Brook Geobruce Sweetpea for $6000 at the IDW Guernsey sale. “She is a very good bodied heifer, in calf and looks like the type of animal I could bring back to the show in the future,” he said.

Paul Douglas, NHIA director, presents the award to genomic services officer, Miranda Clark.

The late Laurie Wells has been honoured with the naming of meritorious service award.

A

pioneering legend within herd improvement has been honoured with the naming of an annual award by the National Herd Improvement Association. The late George Laurence Wells will be remembered with the Laurie Wells Meritorious Service Award. The first awardees were announced at a special dinner held during International Dairy Week in January in Shepparton. Laurie grew up on a dairy farm on the outskirts of Bacchus Marsh. From a young age he was devoted to dairy cows as evidenced by his annual holiday funded by pocket money and taken at the Royal Melbourne Show, watching dairy cow judging from front row seats. At the age of 30, Laurie decided to move from the home farm and purchase a dairy farm at Narre Warren. Laurie had befriended several leading breeders at Royal Melbourne showing cows, in particular Bob Marshall, founder of Paringa Holsteins and father of Pam Malcolm and he decided a move east was best. After farming for several years, he encountered one of the wettest seasons on record and with much of the herd suffering from lameness, he decided it was time to sell up. Pondering his future over a cup of tea with Don Leslie, father of dairy auctioneer Brian Leslie, an advert in the Weekly Times for a job at the Victorian Artificial Breeders for a farm hand was pointed out.

Honouring dairy legend He got the job and had a career spanning several decades. Laurie started as a farm hand working with the bulls of the day and developed a reputation for handling problematic young progeny test bulls. He also developed a photographic memory and knowledge of dairy cows that was put to good use by a move into the office. This led to the establishment of what was probably Australia’s first mating service — the VAB Herd Evaluation Service [HES]. This work took him to commercial dairy herds around Australia where his annual visit was eagerly awaited. His cow scores and mating suggestions were all handwritten, long before computer mating and recording. After visiting the Leslie herd in Gippsland, Laurie came back to VAB with an audio cassette of a young Brian Leslie who had recorded a mock auction using VAB sire catalogues. Laurie was most impressed and was sure the kid was going to make it as a top auctioneer. Laurie followed Brian’s career with great pride, and they remained close friends until his passing. Jacqui Biddulph milks around 600 cows on Cowaramup in Western Australia with her husband Bob. Jacqui was grateful for Laurie’s support early in her career. Jacqui moved to VAB after graduating Longrenong Agricultural College without a dairy background and became the first

female sales representative working in the AI industry. She described him as a patient teacher, willing to impart his dairy cow knowledge. Genetics Australia export manager Rob Derksen said he owes a great deal to Laurie. “Laurie taught me so much about what to look for in a dairy cow. Laurie would inspect daughters of progeny test bulls and identify which we should take paddock photographs for use in bull catalogues. “It is of no surprise the majority of the daughters he said should be photographed were by bulls that would end up graduating as proven bulls,” Rob said. Laurie was a pioneer in mating services in Australia but his ability to evaluate and recognise good dairy cows received worldwide recognition in 1987. He was awarded first place in the Hoard’s Dairyman Cow Judging photographic contest where he placed ahead of over 80,000 entries from 37 countries. Laurie toured the US and Canada on several occasions with cows always the focus of each visit. He was also responsible along with Peter Williams, then Genetics Australia’s sire analyst, to import a young bull from the USA called Caernarvon Cleitus JUDGE — a bull that ended up having a significant impact on the dairy industry in Australia for many years.

The Dee Family (L-R) Adam, Mandy, Mark, Ryan, Hannah, Adrian and Colin.

Sundae gives the show ring a good shake W

hen you have been breeding quality cows for as long as the Dee family, from Clydevale Holsteins at Macorna, it’s probably hard to find a favourite — there have been many great cows, over many, many years. And while it is hard for the family to nominate a favourite, Hullabaloo Bolton Sundae EX93 2E 1xM, 1xP comes close. Producing more than 67,000 litres of milk and five tonnes of solids in her lifetime, Sundae has won numerous shows and the All Australian Competition. It all began for Sundae at the Kerang Feature show where, as a two-year-old, she won honourable mention intermediate champion. On her second lactation she won champion cow at the Rochester Holstein Feature Show. The following year she would be champion cow at the Cohuna Feature Show and then go on to be champion cow and supreme udder at the 2017 NHD Victorian Winter Fair. Sundae then also won the honourable mention five-year-old in the 2016–17 All Australian Competition. Her most recent outing saw her place 6th in the mature cow class at IDW in 2019 and then go on to win the All Australian Mature Cow. Getting Sundae to that particular show was not easy after giving birth to mixed twins in October.

30 //

H ullabaloo Bolton Sundae EX 93 2E 1xM, 1xP.

But after surviving a long hot summer Sundae looked great at IDW, where Brad Cullen took her winning photo. Two weeks later she had bad mastitis and nearly died. Sundae recovered and went on to be the top PI cow in the herd of over 400 and produced 12,723 litres and 853 kg solids in her 305-day lactation — she averaged 41.7 litres over her lactation and her will to survive and thrive was phenomenal. While Clydevale love Sundae they give breeding credit to Murray Varcoe from Kyabram after buying her as a pregnant heifer at the North West Stars of the Future Sale. Murray still owns Sundae’s mother, Burn-Brae FC Sundae VG89 (by Finalcut), which he bought as a young cow from Andrew and Stuart Mackie from Meeniyan. They bred the family down from the well known Wranhi Marquis Sunspot VG87 whose third dam came from Paringa Holsteins and traces back to Craigmore Holsteins. Sundae’s progeny are exciting, with daughters by Solomon and Aftershock and granddaughters by Rambo, King Doc, Racer and Clydevale Contrast Piston (ex C, Mr Sam Pisa EX91 2E). Her grand daughter Clydevale Piston Sunsmart was crowned youth show champion at the 2019 NHD Victorian Winter Fair and she’s a daughter of Clydevale Solomon Sunspot GP.

ALL BREEDS DAIRY JOURNAL VOLUME 66 MARCH 2020 – MAY 2020

The family is also milking Clydevale Solomon Sunset VG85, ranked third out of 26 entries in the North West Semex On Farm Challenge and she has a nice King Doc heifer. They also have Clydevale Solomon Sunkist GP83 and she also has a nice daughter by Clydevale Contrast Piston. Another daughter of Sundae, Clydevale Solomon Sunbeam GP84 2yo, placed third senior 2yo in the 2018 On Farm Challenge. Sadly, Sunbeam was down with an injury for eight weeks last year and she eventually gave birth to a healthy heifer calf, Clydevale Rambo Survivor. The will of Sunbeam to live was unbelievable but unfortunately, she did not make it and is now buried on the farm. Sundae will also leave her mark on their herd through her sons. The maiden heifers are AI to sexed semen and then run with a bull. Clydevale Fever Sundance produced 15 daughters and over a couple of years Clydevale Solomon Stark has produced 63 daughters who look like Sundae — black heifers with dairy strength. The family are looking forward to milking the Starks as the Sundance heifers have calved in very nicely. Sundae has given the Dee family many enjoyable and rewarding times and they can’t wait to see what happens with her next lactation.

hen I last wrote my first column in November the paddocks were mostly bare dirt, now it is a sea of green. It has only been ten days since the storms started and the pasture still looks better from a distance, but we now have hope that we will receive decent rainfall this summer. I know we are not out of the woods yet, with dams and springs needing much more rain before they are replenished but we have hope. The rain appears to be fairly widespread and by the time you read this report, I hope you have all received good falls. In November I judged the On Farm Challenge in Tasmania and Victoria. It was a terrific experience for me to see so much beautiful country, some with lots of grass, meet up with many members and judge beautiful Guernsey cows. Congratulations to all who entered and special congratulations to the winners. My thanks to the organisers and to Michael Smith and the Semex representatives who escorted me around the farms. Last week I attended IDW and again saw a wonderful display of Guernsey cattle. Congratulations to all exhibitors, and to those who presented cattle for the Guernsey sale. The results demonstrate that our breed

has a real place in our industry and the need to continually present the Guernsey breed in a positive light to the wider dairy community. Many thanks go to Josh Smith and his team, in planning and preparing the cattle for the sale. I have spoken of the need to upgrade our web site and I am now pleased to report that the new site is up and running. There is still a lot of work to do but thanks to the efforts of Amy Cleggett it is a reality. Whilst I hear there was a bit of swearing involved, which I thoroughly understand (my computer treats me with disdain) we now have the base to which we can add contacts, information and news. It could take twelve months before we achieve our objective of becoming an information hub for both members and those seeking to breed cows producing the World’s Finest Milk. When you have the chance check it out we are open to suggestions of the content you would like to see there, but remember it is still a work in progress. The Federal Executive meets monthly and if there are ideas you wish discussed please contact me or our Secretary Joyce. Laurie Dunne President

Guernsey youth give it a good go A

N ENTHUSIASTIC Guernsey youth team competed in this year’s International Dairy Week youth challenge. The 10 team members were broken down into three different groups; judging, handlers and clipping, with each section individually scored by three different judges. Our team consisted of some very eager young members to some who have been in the team for many years. We may not have placed in the top three,

but every team member left with a smile and laugh, what more could you ask for. Special thanks to Michael Smith for all his help and support of the team and thank you to all the members who donated equipment, animals and time to support this year’s challenge team. Thank you Semex for your sponsorship of our team. Frances Hayden, Youth Co-ordinator

Youth camp inspires next generation I

t was another successful Western District Dairy Youth Camp in the books for organisers and attendees of the 2020 event. Held January 7–9, the three-day camp was filled with fun and showing practicalities for the 40-odd young people who travelled from South Australia, Northern Victoria, NSW and locally. Committee member Donna Edge said the focus of the camp was to encourage team work and build relationships amongst participants. “The kids come along with a calf of their own, or they are allocated one to care for, for the three days they are here,” Donna said. “It is just like preparing for a show where they are placed in teams and practice the usual skills of showing, judging, handling and clipping.” This year’s event culminated in an entertaining ‘mock’ auction, with the kids working together in teams to present the best animal. “The kids had to research pedigrees and each member of the team had a job to do, whether it was to lead the animal, auction it, or act as a bid spotter,” Donna said. “A local auctioneer came down to help coach the kids and it ended up being quite funny and entertaining – everyone was in hysterics by the end.” This year, organisers decided to take a different track when it came to speakers, calling on Essendon footballer and Noorat local Zac Merrett along with Ben Harkin, who was born without arms, to speak to the kids. “Both speakers were really motivational, and it was great for the kids to hear their stories and what they had to say,” Donna said. Other highlights of the camp included halter making with Geoff Bolch while photographer Brad Cullen helped the kids with a few tips and pointers when taking photos of cows and calves. “We are fortunate the timing of the camp coincides with the UK Holstein exchange,” Donna said. “They came along to the camp and pitched in to help with the kids and share their knowledge and stories of dairying in the United Kingdom.”

Geoff Bolch shares the skill of halter making.

President’s message

A

S WE said goodbye to 2019, we thought with drought, fires, lack of irrigation water and lack of fodder how much worse could it get? Then came the Victorian and NSW bushfires, which had a devastating impact on farms, towns and communities. Many dairy farms and families were severely impacted and loved ones were lost. We all hope these families, farms and communities can recover. Some regions have had useful rains of late and I hope good follow up rains come to relieve pressure on drought and fodder. This year’s International Dairy Week brought with it some very favorable weather conditions, which exhibitors and cattle would have appreciated. The Illawarra show was judged by Greg English from Eachamvale stud at Malanda, Queensland with a very impressive lineup of heifers and in milk cows on display from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

I thought the highlight of the show was the junior, intermediate and senior champion line up of high-quality cattle. To all of those who exhibited I say thank you for your commitment and effort. Congratulations to all prize winners and champions. We had the pleasure of hosting several American Milking Shorthorn visitors during and after I.D.W. I hope that they enjoyed their time here at IDW and visiting Illawarra studs. It is very important to share breeding ideas with the shorthorn breeds worldwide. As mentioned in previous issues I encourage all members to take advantage of the discounted price of $7.70 (including GST) for female registrations, this offer will return to our normal pricing after June 30, 2020. Let us all hope the dairy industry continues to improve and farmers receive a realistic price for farm gate milk and hopefully we can all enjoy a very good season in 2020. President Ian Mueller
