Running on stronger than ever The 2015 Challenge Shepparton triathlon event is set to be even better than last year with about 1000 competitors from across the state expected to make their way to the Goulburn Valley. The longest and toughest race over the two-day multisport festival, Challenge Shepparton involves a 1.9 km swim at Victoria Park Lake, 90 km bike ride through Toolamba and Mooroopna, and a scenic 21.1 km run along the Goulburn River. Challenge Shepparton is a joint initiative of McPherson Media Group, Greater Shepparton City Council, Challenge Australia and SuperSprint, and it developed from the Shepparton triathlon event presented by Shepparton Tri Club for 16 years. McPherson Media Group events general manager Kelvin Maude said even though last year’s event was a huge success and received a terrific response from athletes, enhancements had been made to the 2015 program. “The good thing about going into the second year is that we have identified things that we can do better,” Maude said.

He said the revival of the Hexman sprint event, developed by Shepparton Tri Club, was the most significant improvement to the program and he expected the event to attract more people, especially locals, to the multi-sport festival.

provided a ‘fast and flat’ course attracting triathletes looking to achieve a personal best time.

“Hexman is a much loved event and is unique to Shepparton,” Maude said.

“We provide a big city triathlon with country hospitality,” Connick said.

He said other major improvements to the 2015 program included two fun runs on the Challenge Shepparton triathlon course and the trikids junior triathlon at Victoria Park Lake precinct, which would make competitors feel closer to the real triathlon experience.

She said council played an important role in supporting the event not only financially but in organising major road closures to ensure the safety of all participants and visitors, preparing the lake, grounds and pathways, and assisting with licences and permits.

Out of the Challenge races in Australia, Challenge Shepparton provided the best swim course for competitors thanks to its clear and calm conditions, Maude said.

Injury cruels ambitions Professional triathlete and champion of last year’s Challenge Shepparton Josh Amberger was looking forward to competing in this year’s Challenge Shepparton however a leg injury has forced him to take some time off.

and although training with his girlfriend, also a professional triathlete, keeps him driven, the sport itself is motivation enough.

“I’m pretty disappointed. I’ve had it on my schedule for most of the year,” Amberger said.

“I really enjoy the small town feel to it and the way the community gets behind the event.”

“You’re out there in the pool, on the roads and on the running tracks — it’s just a great atmosphere to be outdoors.”

The twenty-six-year-old from Brisbane has trained as a professional triathlete for seven years and holds an impressive résumé.

The bushland and the lake views of Shepparton are the aspects Amberger enjoys most and he said the course itself was fantastic.

The main goal for Amberger in the 2016 season is to compete in the Ironman 70.3 championships on the Sunshine Coast.

Amberger has travelled to the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, America, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Austria this year but said Shepparton was still one of his favourite places to race in the world.

Last year, in the space of five weeks, Amberger was crowned champion of Challenge Shepparton and the Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie and Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney.

Amberger’s advice to Challenge Shepparton competitors this year was to be prepared for any weather conditions and just enjoy the experience.

While 2014 was a highly successful year for Amberger, he said this year had been tough with injuries affecting his performance in competitions.

“The course is quite scenic and there is always something to focus on.

Amberger loves the triathlon lifestyle

– Emma Carinci

“I enjoy flying down to Melbourne and I love the two-hour drive to the countryside — it gives a nice tone to the weekend.

“Athletes should remember that they compete for enjoyment.”

Shepparton News photographer Julie Mercer captured Josh Amberger’s celebrations as he crossed the line first at Challenge Shepparton 2014. The stein of beer represents Roth, in Germany, the birthplace of the first Challenge race. Mercer won the Best Sports Photograph Award for the image at the 2015 state Rural Press Club Awards.

Challenge ambassadors Three-time Challenge Roth champion Yvonne van Vlerken and Australia’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Brad Kahlefeldt have been appointed Challenge Shepparton ambassadors for 2015. Dutch-born van Vlerken, 36, has carved out an impressive career including five long-course wins in her 15 years of triathlon competition. Widely known as the ‘flying blonde Dutch girl’ van Vlerken is a multiple champion over half and full-distance triathlons and under the guidance of coach Siri Lindley comes to Shepparton in top form. Career highlights for the eight-times Dutch champion include twice winning Challenge Kraichgau, first in the 2012 Ironman Florida, fourth in the 2013 Ironman World Championships and first in 2015 Challenge Batemans Bay. Brad Kahlefeldt’s impressive competitions résumé features appearances at the world’s highest profile sporting events, the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games. gold medallist.

A successful career on the International Triathlon Union circuit also saw him claim another two World Championship medals, six Australian titles and four Oceania Championship titles. Kahlefeldt has served his apprenticeship on the longer course since 2012 and medalled several times before his breakthrough Challenge win at Batemans Bay in 2014. He finished third in Ironman Melbourne in 2015 and, after being edged out of first place at the inaugural Challenge Shepparton in 2014, is keen to go one better in November.

From Germany to Shepparton A legendary triathlon, Challenge Roth was born in the German city of Roth thanks to the Challenge Family. After infiltrating iconic destinations in 21 countries around the world since 2002, the fastest growing global longdistance triathlon series made its way to Shepparton last year. DATEV Challenge Roth is now the world’s largest long-distance race, attracting more than 5000 triathletes, with places selling out in minutes. Triathlete Detlef Kühnel was one of the first Germans to take on the Hawaiian Ironman challenge in Kona and after enjoying the triathlon so much, he started a triathlon series in Roth, hence the city became the birthplace of triathlon sport in Europe. In 2001 after issues with the World Triathlon Corporation, Kühnel terminated the contract

and gave the Ironman licence to Frankfurt, however, the triathlon event in Roth survived. The following year, Kühnel’s successor Herbert Walchshöfer broke away from the Ironman brand establishing the Challenge Family and, along with his team, ran a highly successful first Challenge race in Roth. The legacy of the late Walchshöfer is being continued by his wife and two children, and the Challenge Family now has more than 60 000 athletes in 40 races on four continents.

The Challenge Family events have gained international popularity and esteem and all Challenge races are held at locations which offer unique courses and vibrant communities. Triathlons may not be considered a ‘spectator-friendly’ sport but Roth is a town that is especially passionate about triathlons and the unique Challenge Roth race draws crowds of more than 210 000 spectators every year. A Challenge Family triathlon is called the ‘race of a lifetime’ and allows spectators and participants of all ages and abilities to experience the excitement and emotion of the sport — this year’s Challenge Shepparton will be no exception.

From Roth to Shepparton with Iron He was just over halfway into the 180 km bike leg, participating in one of the oldest and most renowned triathlon events in the world in Germany, when Duncan Paterson crashed into a ditch travelling at 35 km/h. Despite the mishap, which left the athlete and his bike unharmed, 51-year-old Paterson from Melbourne said Challenge Roth was an amazing experience and the race could not have gone better. Paterson continued the race, finishing 9th in his age group. “The whole thing was just amazing,” Paterson said. “Roth was a great town and the whole area embraces the race.” After competing in Challenge Shepparton last year, Paterson won a spot to participate in Challenge Roth 2015. Although he had been participating in half distances since taking up triathlon training 13 years ago, Paterson was prepared to take on the full-distance challenge for Roth and was training for about 12 hours a week in the three months leading up to the event. “It’s considered the best triathlon in the world so you

don’t pass up the opportunity.” “I never planned on doing an ironman distance but if I was going to do it, this would be the one.” He said the atmosphere was incredible and gave him all the motivation he needed as he powered through the 42 km run. “There were more than 240 000 spectators on the day. . . when you wanted to stop you just couldn’t because of all the people cheering you on.” Paterson placed seventh in his age group at last year’s Challenge Shepparton and is aiming to improve at this year’s Challenge Shepparton. The minor incident at Roth did not faze Paterson and he still enjoys the bike ride the most. “The bike is a nice leg — I can motor along and feel quite happy.” – Emma Carinci

Duncan Paterson achieved impressive results at Challenge Roth this year and at last year’s Challenge Shepparton placing 7th in his age group. Paterson aims to improve on that result in this year’s race.

WIN an entry to Challenge Roth 2016 The Challenge Family has given Challenge Shepparton 10 entries to DATEV Challenge Roth 2016 to give away to athletes. One double pass (two entries) to Challenge Roth 2016 was won by Shepparton’s Con Giatrakos. There are eight places still up for grabs. For more information, visit www.challengeshepparton.com.au/ news Last year’s Roth spot winner Duncan Paterson (below) competed at the world-renowned event in July.

Tower Run and activities Con Giatrakos has been busy training every day for this year’s Challenge Shepparton and DATEV Challenge Roth 2016. Picture: Julie Mercer

Up for the biggest Challenge A typical work day for Con Giatrakos from Shepparton starts between 5 am and 6 am and finishes after 8 pm — and some of those hours have nothing to do with his job. Owning takeaway fish and chip shops in two locations and a catering business demands long hours but this has not stopped Giatrakos from completing triathlon training twice daily, before and after work, in preparation for Challenge Shepparton and for one of the biggest triathlons in the world, DATEV Challenge Roth in Germany. The 35-year-old has received a spot for himself and a friend at Challenge Roth in July through the Roth Rewards Program offered by Challenge Shepparton. “When I got the news that I was going to Roth, I ramped up the training,” Giatrakos said. A lucky best friend, Matthew Cox of Shepparton, will accompany Giatrakos to Germany and participate alongside him in the triathlon. It is too early to predict who will outperform the other but Giatrakos admits that Cox is stronger in the running department while he is better at the swim.

Although he has only been involved in triathlons for a year, Giatrakos is serious about training and has hired a personal coach. He is looking forward to Challenge Roth but knows it will be huge test. “It’s like asking just anyone to play in the AFL grand final next year,” he said. Nonetheless, Giatrakos is not one to shy away from a challenge and said one of the best parts of triathlons was that athletes could always push themselves to a higher level and gain a sense of personal achievement. “It’s amazing what the body can do when it’s forced to do something. “You know that you’re not an elite racer but you just do it to prove to yourself that you can.” To sponsor Con Giatrakos on his trip to Roth or to find out more about his training, phone his shop on 5821 3534. – Emma Carinci

Challenge Shepparton’s multi-sport festival will expand into the Shepparton central business district on Friday, November 13, for the Telstra Tower Run. The event will kick-off at 4 pm with participants timed during their run up and walk down the Maude St Mall Telstra Tower. The fastest competitors across multiple categories will take home a prize. Event co-ordinator Liz Connick said entrants who wanted to scale the tower without running are invited to participate in a half-hour open session. “From 7 pm to 7.30 pm we will open the tower up for walkers, all abilities and younger children,” Connick said. Registration will be open on the day at a cost of $5 per person; those wishing to participate in the open session will also have to pay.

All proceeds from the Telstra Tower run will be donated to the child and adolescent unit at GV Health. Earlier this year the Zaidee’s Tower Run saw a new fastest record time of 1:28 min by Shepparton man Tong Tong. Free activities will be provided by Activities in the Park during the Telstra tower run in the CBD. “We hope that by bringing activities into the mall it will activate the space in a positive way and encourage people to be physically active,” Active Living project manager Belinda Conna said. “We are proud to partner with Challenge Shepparton to bring the multi-sport festival to residents and visitors to encourage people to get outdoors, try a new sport and meet new people.“

Hexman back in 2015 After a five-year break, the Hexman sprint will be returning on Sunday, November 15 as part of Challenge Shepparton. The course is one-sixth (‘hex’ used to abbreviate hexagon) of a full-distance triathlon — with a 633 m swim, 32 km bike ride and 7 km run — and was originally held by Shepparton Tri Club. Shepparton Tri Club president Steve Ayton said the event had always been popular and was a great way to encourage shorter-distance runners and beginners as well as professional athletes and teams. After some logistical challenges with the growth of the

long-course event, Ayton said Shepparton Tri Club was pleased the event was returning this year. Ayton said triathlons were a family sport and therefore having an event that was suitable for a range of ages and abilities was important. “We want partners, for example, to have something to do if they don’t want to take on the full distance,” Ayton said. Entries for the Hexman event are now open with an early bird entry fee of $120 limited to the first 100 entries. Full price entry is $150 and team entry is $180. Participants must be above 15 years of age to enter.

Flying solo Physical education teacher at Shepparton’s McGuire College, Michael Frizzell is happy to dedicate a lot of his time to working with teenagers, but his regular exercise routine is purely his own personal time and is not something he is willing to give up. Frizzell, 59, of Shepparton, is looking forward to participating in the Hexman sprint event on Sunday, November 15 and said his regular training was not just about preparing for triathlons but about having his own time. “I get more of thinking time during training,” Frizzell said. Motivation for competitive training often comes from training groups and support from like-minded friends however this is not the case for Frizzell. “It’s quite individual for me and I rarely train with anybody else.” Seldom lacking in motivation, exercise is far from a chore for Frizzell and he enjoys the competitive aspect of triathlons. He has taught physical education since 1978, spending his first 10 years teaching in Melbourne where he participated in his first triathlon. Michael Frizzell is ready and raring to go for the return of the Hexman race.

10

Challenge Shepparton 2015

“There was a triathlon down at Frankston — it was early days for triathlons in Melbourne — and I was into general fitness at the time and was bit of a runner, so I thought I’d give it a go.” Since then, Frizzell has participated, intermittently, in half triathlons and worked the training in to his regular exercise regime. He believes the shorter distances and half triathlons are ideal because there is less training involved and most people can better fit it in to busy life schedules. “If you want to do a triathlon for the first time, the Hexman is quite suitable.” He participated in the last Hexman sprint event in 2010 and is aiming to place in the top 5 of his age group this year.

Lake precinct perfect for sport spectacle Welcome athletes and supporters to Greater Shepparton for the second Challenge Shepparton event. We are excited to be hosting Challenge Shepparton for the second time and again showcase our fabulous Victoria Park Lake. Our picturesque lake not only provides excellent water quality for the triathletes but is a family friendly environment and the ideal spot to catch all the race action. Greater Shepparton City Council is proud to be part of this event. We congratulate the Challenge Family, McPherson Media and SuperSprint in bringing the race to fruition and are excited for Challenge Shepparton to be part of our annual sporting events calendar. This event is also part of Greater Shepparton’s 51 Days of Major Sporting Events, with state, national and international sporting events which runs until December. This further emphasises our reputation as a major regional sporting events’ destination and shows our commitment to attracting the biggest and best events to Greater Shepparton. With about 1500 competitors, the multi-sport festival is expected to inject more than $3.5 million into the Greater Shepparton economy through accommodation bookings, retail shopping, dining and visiting tourist attractions around the region and we hope that the athletes and their supporters enjoy the fantastic experiences Greater Shepparton has to offer. I would also like to thank our 400-plus volunteers who have given their time to ensure the smooth running of this event. There is no doubt that without your involvement, this event wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful.

A few ‘niggling injuries’ are a reminder to Frizzell that he will not be able to compete in triathlons forever but until then his exercise routine is business as usual.

I wish all competitors the best of luck on race day. We thank you for coming to Greater Shepparton to support the Challenge Shepparton event. We hope that you enjoy our hospitality and all we have to offer.

“I’ll do what I can for as long as I can.”

Team ready to Up the Ann-te Anne Maclean will participate in this weekend’s Challenge Shepparton Triathlon in her first team entry. Maclean will race the running leg of her team Up the Ann-te with Colin Gleeson and Fiona Le Gassick making up the swim and bike legs respectively. Originally entered as an individual, Maclean said she struggled to find the time to train so changed her entry to a team. “I wanted to participate on the day, but I realised I was not going to get the training done,” she said. Maclean aimed high when approaching members for her team and managed to lock-in professional cyclist Steve Fairless for the bike leg. Due to an operation Fairless had to withdraw from the team. Maclean said she approached Le Gassick who was also originally training as an individual entrant but swapped to Maclean’s team due to time constraints. “I was too busy to fit training in. Anne is my tri coach and so she asked me to fill in for Steve,” Le Gassick said. Up the Ann-te team members Anne Maclean, Colin Gleeson and Fiona Le Gassick.

Joining the team for the swim leg will be Colin Gleeson, who initially took an interest in training and triathlons due to health concerns. “I was overweight and in a stressful job, I was a recipe for a heart attack,” Gleeson said. “I was challenged to get fit that’s how I started.” Maclean said participating as a group was a great way to still race while taking a small step back. “I’ve had my time where I’ve trained hard for triathlons, but it’s still nice that I can be involved in the sport,” she said. “That’s what’s good about the team event; you can still be involved in a small way but still be a part of the large event.” Maclean said the best part about participating in triathlons was competing against yourself to beat a previous time or to work on a discipline. She said while competitors always had a best discipline but there was always room for improvement. – Taylah Burrows

SHEPPARTON MULTI-SPORT FESTIVAL PROGRAM

Short and long fun Two fun runs at the Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival mean people of all running abilities can be involved on Saturday, November 14. A new 10 km run will accompany the original 5 km event which made its debut last year. Shepparton Runners Club spokesman Steven Trevaskis said last year’s 5 km fun run was such a success that the club decided to add a longer option. “We had about 60 people turn out last year so we’re hoping for more this year because word will have gotten out about the success and fun,” Trevaskis said. The fun run’s length was originally 7 km but was shortened when it made its debut at Challenge Shepparton last year. “When it was 7 km it was a bit of an odd distance. There aren’t really any 7 km runs around and people don’t want to know their 7 km time,” Trevaskis said. He said registering in the fun run was a great opportunity to keep active and participate at Challenge Shepparton, without the long distances.

“In most sports there is a running element, so it will help people who are active but also those people who aren’t into long-distance running or triathlons — they can run at their own pace,” Trevaskis said. The events will start and finish at Victoria Park Lake and will take a different course to last year. The track will run further into the bush with one lap around the lake in the 5 km, and two laps for the 10 km. Unlike last year’s fun run, children younger than 12 will be able to participate as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Registration costs $25 per person and is available before the event at Victoria Park Lake on Saturday, November 14. Race briefings start at 7.50 am with the 10 km run kicking off at 8 am and the 5 km at 8.15 am. – Taylah Burrows

All about the kids Young athletes have been gearing up for the 2015 McDonald’s trikids junior triathlon, an event which has been growing in popularity since it was started by the Shepparton Tri Club about eight years ago. Shepparton Tri Club president Steve Ayton said the event has grown steadily since it started. “With the advent of the Challenge race and holding the event at Victoria Park Lake, it was an opportunity to get kids in amongst the atmosphere,” Ayton said.

summer and winter triathlon series.

Ayton said the junior triathlon focused on participation more than competition and the kids especially loved running through the finish chute.

The Shepparton Tri Club runs regular training sessions every Monday night for club members, almost a third of which are junior athletes.

“It’s all about throwing your hands up in the air and crossing that line,” he said.

Ayton said the main changes to this year’s trikids junior triathlon course were time and location — the race will commence at 4 pm and the swimming leg will take place in the lake.

Ten-year-old Bailey White from Finley is looking forward to participating in this year’s McDonald’s trikids junior triathlon for the first time. Bailey has competed in five triathlons hosted by the Shepparton Tri Club, winning one race and finishing second in the others. He cycles three times a week, swims once a week and prefers to spend his recess breaks at school racing against his friends to practise his running. As a member of the Cobram Barooga Cycling Club, Bailey is especially passionate about cycling and has his own trainer. “My favourite (leg) is the bike because I can speed away from people,” Bailey said.

Bailey White loves his bike and enjoys competing in bike races.

Two age groups, seven to nine years and 10 to 15 years, will tackle a 25 m swim, 2 km bike ride and 400 m run and 50 m swim, 4 km bike ride and 800 m run respectively. Ayton acknowledged the sponsors Shepparton and Mooroopna McDonald’s for helping support the event. “They are wonderful and go out of their way to ensure the kids have a great time.” Ayton is expecting strong participation in this year’s junior triathlon and said the event aimed to get the whole family involved and promote a friendly atmosphere.

Bailey loves triathlons and even though his little brother Jaidyn, 6, is too young to compete, he is also involved in training.

“The main focus of the event is to do something for the kids so they can experience what it’s like on the ‘big stage’.”

Open water swim remains buoyant The 1.9 km open water swim will continue this year after a successful debut at Challenge Shepparton last year. The longer course was an addition to the already popular 1.2 km swim which, prior to Challenge Shepparton, was held each year during the Shepparton Half Iron Man competition. The event will be held on Saturday, November 14 in the early afternoon and will see competitors swim a course set out by Shepparton Rowing Club at Victoria Park Lake. Shepparton Swimming Club will again present the event; club president Phillip Guthrie said the club was excited to see swimming in the heart of Shepparton. “We’re rapt to be involved and to see swimming become so popular,” Guthrie said. Event organisers believe this year will see even larger crowds than last year

turn out to watch competitors swim for glory. Last-minute registrations will be taken up until noon at Victoria Park Lake on Saturday, November 14 at a cost of $25 per person. All competent swimmers are invited to participate with a minimum entry age of 14 years. Entrants will be provided with a swimming cap and timing chip prior to the race. Prizes provided by the Aqua Shop are up for grabs for male and female first, second and third-place winners. Race briefings start at 1.25 pm with the 1.2 km race kicking off at 1.30 pm and the 1.9 km at 1.45 pm.

The official

Cycling event powering on Round two of Shepparton Cycling Club’s criterium will return to Challenge Shepparton this year. The five-series event will see cyclists compete in a 45-minute twilight race following the day’s main triathlon event.

“People can come down once they’ve finished work or what they’ve been doing that day,” Mathieson said.

Jon Mathieson from Shepparton Cycling Club said there was no question whether to return to Challenge Shepparton after last year’s success.

The race will mimic conditions cyclists experience in their early morning training, ensuring the heat and pressure is off.

“Last year was massive, we had about 138 riders turn out to compete,” Mathieson said. He said that while the criterium didn’t usually receive many riders from the tri event, the race was more about giving competitors and spectators something to watch. “It’s about enhancing the weekend and the spectacle,” Mathieson said. The course will remain the same this year, starting and finishing on Wyndham St after circling Victoria Park Lake. The twilight race is expected to increase the spectators arriving at Victoria Park Lake to enjoy events once the sun lowers.

Entrant numbers were down during this year’s first race on Saturday, October 10, but are set to spike to around 120 to 140 competitors at the Challenge Shepparton race on Saturday, November 14. Competitors to keep an eye on this year include last year’s winners Benjamin Hill, Ryan Kilpatrick, Nick Barrett and Stephen Merrylees. The race is open to the public; however non Cycling Australia licence holders need to purchase a one-race permit if they wish to be involved. The remaining three criterium events will take place on Saturday, January 16, Saturday, February 13, and Saturday, March 12.

Safety on the water Three community organisations have joined forces to ensure safety on Victoria Park Lake during the water events at Challenge Shepparton and the multi-sport festival. Shepparton Rowing Club, Shepparton Canoe Club and Shepparton Search and Rescue will contribute equipment and time to provide a safe swimming environment and assistance to competitors.

then continue on, that’s within the rules.”

Search and rescue president Mick D’Elia said members scanned the water with sonar equipment for obstructions, checked the buoys were in place and had ‘spotters’ placed at strategic vantage points around the lake monitoring swimmers who got into difficulty or veered off course.

As well as being utilised during the swim leg of the triathlon, the open water swim and the tri-kids event, the buoy course is used throughout the year at rowing regattas and sprint canoeing events.

Two boats, an inflatable rescue boat and aluminium tinny, will be in the water at all times, the operators maintaining radio contact with the ‘spotters’ along with canoes from the canoe club.

Rowing club finance manager Geoff Withers said the group was approached by Greater Shepparton City Council last year to develop, install and monitor the buoys for the 1.9 km swim course.

Withers said in addition to installing the buoy system, about 20 members of the rowing club volunteered as marshals on the running course for Challenge Shepparton. Canoe club president Barry Bell said the club’s role was to shadow the swimmers and watch for competitors who tire.

“We work closely with the canoe club, their paddle skis are able to get closer to the swimmers than the boats at times,” D’Elia said.

“Our canoes are ideal for this type of event, they have no propellers so can easily move within a group of swimmers without risking any injury,” Bell said.

“If a swimmer gets into difficulty or needs a rest they are able to stop and hold onto the side of the boat or paddle ski. As long as we don’t provide any forward movement they can rest and

The students love it, they get such a buzz from being amongst the elite athletes,” Zampaglione said. “The competitors are wonderful; they always take the time to thank the kids and they tell them that without volunteers events like this wouldn’t go ahead.” Zampaglione said in return for assisting at the triathlon the school received a donation from Challenge Shepparton, but its commitment wasn’t driven by the financial reward. “It’s great to promote the importance

MaccaX for Challenge Shepparton Just last year, Challenge Shepparton was accepted as part of the Challenge Family global event series, the fastest growing global long-distance triathlon series in 21 countries. Challenge ambassador and Australian professional triathlete Chris “Macca” McCormack established the MaccaX training programs less than 12 months ago. McCormack won the 1997 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships, was the two-time winner of the Ironman World Championship in 2007 and 2010, and the winner of the 1997 ITU World Cup Series and 2012 Long Distance

Of the 25 000 users, there are 850 paying members who receive additional benefits such as camps, exclusive content and sponsor discounts. A demand from triathletes sparked the creation of the MaccaX training programs.

“We offer free training plans for all the Challenge races around the world so it’s very global,” Franklin said.

“Everyone would ask Chris, ‘What type of training sessions do you do to get so good?’ So we recorded and bundled up all his favourite training sessions.”

“One of the great things about it is along with the plan we offer many opportunities for our users to interact with others training

Britt was back into training and back in the water within a week of being released from hospital. “I came back next season and worked my way through the mini-sprint distances.” Despite the scary experience occurring in his initial years of training and participating, Britt maintains that triathlons are safe and, like most sports, any danger involved is simply inherent and manageable.

many of his sessions and allow everyone to know exactly how and when to do the sessions in the build-up to a race.

and going to the same race.”

This year is the second time Britt will be involved in Challenge Shepparton and he has been training hard, especially after winning the 16-week MaccaX training program subscription. He is running, swimming and cycling three to four times a week each and aims to complete the Challenge Shepparton triathlon in less than six hours. The MaccaX program is a structured, full-time commitment and Britt has tried to follow the personalised plan as precisely as possible. “It is preferable that you do it as scheduled and I can see why because they are targeting different muscle groups and allows for recovery time.”

Britt’s lucky streak has continued, also winning a specialised training program for the Ironman challenge next year. “I will get started on that program after Challenge Shepparton.” Some may wonder how Britt mustered up the courage to get back into triathlons after such an unpleasant incident all those years ago, but his love and passion for triathlons has kept him going and he plans to continue training and beating personal bests in the future. “I guess most people would like to choose a way of leaving a sport and that’s not how I wanted to exit triathlons,” he said. “I still have a few years of improvement left in me.”

From starfish to a star Swimming was not a strong suit for Kristine Hopkins, 36, of Melbourne, who recalled being assigned to the ‘starfish’ squad during swimming lessons in her school days. “Eventually I realised why I was not in the ‘shark’ or ‘dolphin’ group — I was not a good swimmer,” Hopkins said. “I always avoided swimming carnivals and would go to squad with flippers on.” Televised triathlon events prompted a keen interest in the sport and since buying a bike, learning how to swim and starting serious training, Hopkins has not looked back. “I was inspired by how cool it looked to be able to do three sports at once.” Now, she has been taking part in triathlons for about 12 years. After socialising at a triathlon event years ago, Hopkins started dating a professional triathlete, Peter Robertson, who inspired her when she watched triathlon events on television. Robertson was recently inducted in the International Triathlon Union Hall of Fame and the two have remained friends. Hopkins is participating in Challenge Shepparton for the first time this year and was one of the winners of the 16-week MaccaX training program. She said it is a great program and she loved the swim training component in particular. “It’s really different to anything I’ve had before — it’s quite intense,” she said.

Kristine with her third place medal in the 35-39 age group at Portarlington Gatorade Triathlon in 2014.

The MaccaX schedule currently requires her to train for 14 hours per week and although a sore foot has impacted on her progress, Hopkins has persevered with the program. The running leg is Hopkins’ favourite part of triathlons because it encourages complete freedom. “With the run, you just throw your shoes on and go. . . it is all up to you.” As a litigation lawyer running her own firm, Hopkins keeps busy but said competing in triathlons helped to ‘balance the stress’ which she sometimes encountered in her job. Hopkins credits friends from her training group for her motivation and said triathlons were as much about selfimprovement as they were about the enjoyment. “Triathlons are a lifestyle choice and I’ll probably do it forever.” While she cannot say for sure whether she would now make the cut for ‘shark’ squad, Hopkins is certainly a highly competent swimmer and enjoys every aspect of the triathlon sport. “I can’t see myself not swimming, riding and running.” – Emma Carinci
