All ages and experience

“We love the fact that our race weekend is a favourite of triathletes of all abilities,” Challenge Shepparton event manager Kelvin Maude said. “We’re ‘beginner-friendly’ because of our lake freshwater swim, flat bike course and gently undulating run course on our wonderful riverside and lakeside footpaths. “At the other end of the spectrum, the pros love the welcoming, supportive and appreciative crowds, the relaxed rural aspect, and the vibe of the event.” There is a 19-year history of triathlon in the city; Challenge Shepparton began in 2014, and preceding that was a long-course triathlon delivered by Shepparton Triathlon Club for 16 years. Today’s Challenge Shepparton features a 1.9 km swim in Victoria Park Lake, a 90 km bike ride through Toolamba and Mooroopna, and a scenic 21.1 km run along the Goulburn River. The event attracts many well-known professionals, such as Ironman World Championship Kona triathlete Luke Bell.

It was a slow start to the year for Challenge Shepparton 2015 champion Luke Bell.

Sam Betten is a former two-time ITU Australian Junior Elite Champion who has made the successful transition to long-course racing.

2015 Challenge Shepparton ambassador Brad Kahlefeldt never took to the Shepparton long course last year after an accident on his bike left him too injured to compete. Having recovered, Brad is looking to hit the ground running in 2016.

The 37-year-old fractured his pelvis on January 5 in a bike accident, which resulted in two months of rest and a slow process rebuilding his strength. With more than 50 major podiums to his name and 20 first-place finishes over the half distance and a being course record holder in Shepparton at the Kialla Lakes course, the Victorian is at “home on the Challenge Shepparton race track.

In the past three consecutive years Sam has achieved top-10 performances at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships along with finishing third at the recent Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships. Having finished runner-up at the 2015 Challenge Shepparton event with the fastest run spilt of the day, Sam is looking to climb one step higher on the podium in 2016.

National talent competes in Shepparton Racing his first triathlon as a boy, and growing up watching the Ironman World Championship on television, it is no surprise Luke Bell went on to great success. Bell was last year’s Challenge Shepparton male champion and is back to compete this year. “The Shepparton community has played a major role in my triathlon career and love of the sport,” Bell said. “It was one of my first ever triathlons, racing against Olympian Simon Thompson, to holding the Kialla Lakes course record for so many years and winning Challenge Shepparton last year. “The memories range from racing, supporting and watching the iconic triathlon. The Shepparton event is one that is truly a part of Victorian triathlon history and tradition.” After Bell was encouraged to compete in his first triathlon as a child, it turned into a lifelong passion — which he dabbled in while finishing a university degree and pursued more steadily after completion of the degree. Bell decided the best time to do an ironman was between finishing his degree and entering the workforce full-time — which proved a worthwhile

move. He finished in the top 10 of Ironman Australia and qualified for Kona, where he placed 16th. By the time Bell was 24, he had achieved a career-best placing of fifth at Kona. He also placed first at Ironman Australia 2013, and in Ironman North American Champion 2013 — setting a new course record. The 37-year-old, who grew up in Portland, Victoria — about five hours away from Shepparton — has been representing Australia in triathlon since 1995 and professionally since 2002. Today, Bell calls Melbourne home, and he also travels to the United States to train — to San Diego in California, and Boulder in Colorado. Bell’s coach from 2012 until today is Matt Dixon. Sport is truly in Bell’s blood, and he has completed a Bachelor in Applied Sciences Physical Education degree.

Challenge Shepparton 2015 male champion Luke Bell.

Local opportunity for national triathlete qualification The national spotlight is shining on Challenge Shepparton, which is the only half-distance world championship qualifying event for triathlon in Victoria. This means that Challenge Shepparton will provide the opportunity for Elite, Under 23 and Age Group triathletes to earn points towards the 2017 International Triathlon Union (ITU) Age Group World Championships to be held in Penticton, Canada. “After three years establishing Challenge Shepparton, this now places our much loved race on the national and international triathlon stage,” Challenge Shepparton event manager Kelvin Maude said. “A chance to win points to secure a place on the Australian

green and gold team is a dream of many athletes.” Challenge Shepparton is the feature 113 km long course race for Victoria in Triathlon Australia’s national calendar of events for 2016–17. The calendar consists of the Australian National Championship events and the Australian Age Group World Qualifying events, and was designed to span all states to promote and create fair and equal opportunities for Triathlon Australia members to participate, Mr Maude said. “The national calendar sets out to showpiece some of the best triathlon and multisport events Australia has to offer,” Triathlon Australia chief executive officer Miles Stewart said. “Not only are the events a unique experience, but our race directors delivering them are world-class.”

If you are a visiting athlete, clubby or pro, a first-timer or a frequent participant at Shepparton, thank you for choosing our event. Your participation provides a major economic benefit to Shepparton and surrounds, and ensures significant contributions to our volunteer organisations. The day wraps up with the not-to-bemissed fast and furious criterium cycling around the venue.

Kelvin Maude

Sunday is showtime! The Challenge Shepparton international half-distance long course and sprint-distance triathlon kick off at 6 am. We have assembled a brilliant pro field with no less than 17 men and 11 women including Luke Bell, returning to defend his title, and Annabel Luxford back to attempt to re-gain her 2014 title. I’d like to thank our presenting partners Greater Shepparton City Council and the Shepparton News. Thanks to our major sponsors McDonald’s Shepparton and Mooroopna, Shepparton Show Me and the Victorian Government, which delivered Challenge Shepparton vital funding through its Significant Sporting Events Program. I would also like to thank our category partners, sponsors and supporters. Challenge Shepparton would not be possible without the contribution of our generous business community, the volunteering clubs, schools and associations, and the people of Greater Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley. Good luck to all our participants and we hope you enjoy the Challenge Shepparton weekend for 2016. Kelvin Maude Challenge Shepparton event manager

WIN A SPOT AT ROTH Challenge Shepparton is offering the chance to win five double passes to ROTH. The world class triathlon is already sold out so each double pass will secure two spots at ROTH, allowing participants to then pay to enter the event. There are two ways to enter this giveaway. Two double passes will be randomly drawn and given to tri clubs that have participated in this year’s Shepparton Renault Club Row. Three double passes will also be randomly drawn; to enter, put your name in the registration barrel located at the registration area. Prize recipients will be announced on Sunday, November 13.

Champion back at Challenge Shepparton’s Miah Franzmann was not thrilled with her time in last year’s Challenge Shepparton, yet the triathlete still managed to place first in her age group. Franzmann, 51, is no stranger to triathlons, having competed in about eight in Shepparton, including Ironman 70.3. The full-time high school teacher will aim to improve on her time from last year’s race after an injury affected her performance. “I got an injury two days before the race so I was a bit anxious about it,” Franzmann said. “It was not my best time, but I won my age group (50–54).” Franzmann’s triathlon passion was born when she was in her thirties after a group of friends encouraged her to get involved in a team event. “I came from a running background doing marathons so I thought I’d take up the triathlon challenge — but I had to learn how to ride and swim.

“There was a triathlon being held in Swan Hill and my friends coerced me into it. I didn’t think I could make the distance, but when I finished it I was so happy. “After you do it once, you’re addicted.” Since then, Franzmann has been something of a triathlon star having competed in World Championship triathlons. More than two months ago, Franzmann completed the Ironman 70.3 on the Sunshine Coast, finishing 10th in her age group. Her impressive time of four hours, 53 minutes 37 seconds was not achieved without a lot of hard work. “Leading into world championships, I probably do two hours most days during the week.

“On the weekend I’ll usually do a long run, long ride and a longer swim session.” Franzmann said organisation was key to managing her training regime with other commitments. “I work full time and have two kids as well — you have to be pretty organised.” Despite their mother’s aptitude, Ms Franzmann said her children were not into the triathlons. “I think the kids are over triathletes … maybe they’re just sick of me running around all the time,” she said. “But Hannah, my 18-year-old daughter might have a go one day.” Franzmann was looking forward to completing her next triathlon goal at Challenge Shepparton. “I like doing Challenge Shepparton because my friends who aren’t into triathlon come down and see me in action.”

Miah Franzmann has competed in several world championship triathlons.

We challenge you to sprint Beginner athletes or those seeking a less challenging event will enjoy the Challenge Shepparton Sprint. Recently rebranded from the former title of Shepparton Hexman Triathlon, the Challenge Shepparton Sprint features a 700 m swim, 30 km bike ride, and a 7 km run.

Challenge Shepparton for continuing to develop the event into a first class multisport weekend, offering different outlets for participation.

This sprint-distance triathlon is a shorter alternative to the full-distance Challenge triathlon, which it will precede, allowing people to enjoy the fun of a triathlon without the heavy training schedule.

“It’s extremely important for us to work with all our events to help promote the sport and offer opportunities for every athlete to be part of this great sport,” Mr Stewart said.

Challenge Shepparton event manager Kelvin Maude said the sprint distance triathlon was just one of the many events the Challenge Shepparton weekend offered. “We’re very excited; it (sprint-distance triathlon) is a further extension on the value that Challenge brings to triathlon and an ideal pathway to what most triathletes cover as the longer course triathlons,” he said. Luke Whitmore was greeted by his children Oscar and Mischa at the finish line of last year’s Men’s Hexman (now called Challenge Shepparton Sprint).

10 Challenge Shepparton 2016

“It is much more accessible to the athlete that is progressing in their triathlon career.” Triathlon Australia chief executive officer Miles Stewart said triathlon was an “every person sport”. He applauded

The triathlon was successfully relaunched in 2015 following a five-year hiatus. Upon its return to Shepparton, the race, which is one-sixth of a full distance triathlon, had more than 100 participating entrants, Mr Maude said. Entries for the Challenge Shepparton Sprint are still open and cost $140 per person and $180 for team entries. Entry includes one medal, Challenge towel and stubby holder per individual and per team entry. Sprint T-shirts are available.

Ready to hit the water With the support of her friends and family Layla Trevaskis is gearing up to complete her second McDonald’s trikids race. The 10-year-old joined Shepparton Tri Club about a year ago after some of her friends who were in the club convinced her to get involved. Layla’s mum Tanya Trevaskis said her daughter had always been active, but she was still surprised when Layla expressed a desire to join the club. “She was really keen to get down here and give it a go,” she said. “It’s very welcoming, very organised and a really positive environment for the kids.” A keen netballer and swimmer, Layla quickly took to the multi-faceted sport but found getting used to swimming in the lake the most challenging part. “I probably still like the pool, it’s a bit weedy (in the lake),” Layla said. Already a regular swimmer at Aquamoves, Layla’s favourite leg of the trikids race is the swim, which this year will take place in the 50 m outdoor pool at the lakeside aquatic facility. This year, Layla has set herself a goal to complete the run leg without stopping to walk. “I get stitches,” she said.

Club training sessions have improved Layla’s fitness, and this was proven earlier in the year when she completed the 3 km kids’ Mad Cow Mud Run course. Completing races with her friends is one of Layla’s favourite parts of being a member of the club. So far, since joining 12 months ago, Layla has completed four triathlon events with her friends and said she had made improvements on her finish time each race. Layla has been working hard every Monday night at the club shed, training for each leg of the McDonald’s trikids race which will kick off at 4 pm on Saturday, November 12. Online entries close at 5 pm Thursday, at sheppmultisportfestival.com.au. Last minute entries will be taken from 3 pm on race day, Saturday, November 12.

Layla Trevaskis is looking forward to competing in the McDonald’s trikids race during the Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival.

After-party: Athletes and spectators will celebrate the Challenge weekend on Sunday night at Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton.

Lakeside celebration The excitement of the Challenge Shepparton triathlon will continue on Sunday night when the after-party kicks off at Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake. In previous years the party has been hosted at other locations but this year it will be celebrated at the event venue, where the athletes’ recovery tent will be converted into a party space. Athletes, their family members, friends, supporters and the public are welcome to join in the celebrations beginning at 3.30 pm. “To hold the function somewhere else was very disjointed, that’s why we decided to convert the athlete recovery into

the after-party zone so everyone can join in,” Challenge Shepparton event co-ordinator Liz Connick said.

Music will be pumping throughout the afternoon and into the evening from the Red Bull DJ rig, while giant games including Jenga, Scrabble and Connect Four will keep young ones entertained.

“We wanted to capture the excitement and invite volunteers, supporters, the pro athletes and everyone involved to celebrate. As there are still athletes coming across the finish line, we wanted to hold it at the lake.”

Food will be available to purchase and Challenge Shepparton entertainment partner the Aussie Hotel will be transporting its bar to the lake foreshore for the event.

Ms Connick said the online response to the change in location had been positive with athletes expressing their excitement and approval.

Ms Connick said the after-party was a celebration of athletes’ achievements, die-hard supporters and hard-working event volunteers.

Special thanks to businesses and organisations who took up the challenge and entered the inaugural ‘Community Team Challenge’ You are now a champion in your community, as 50% of your entry plus extra funds raised go directly to The Community Fund Goulburn Valley.

ENTRIES ARE OPEN UNTIL 12 NOON, FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER. Good luck on race day and what’s raised here stays here! 14 Challenge Shepparton 2016

Greater Shepparton City Council chief executive officer Peter Harriott.

Get mooving at Victoria Park Lake Be involved in the excitement of Challenge Shepparton with a range of pop-up activities happening across the Victoria Park Lake precinct on Saturday, November 12. Part of the Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival, the pop-up activities are an opportunity for Challenge spectators to ‘get mooving’. During the day numerous organisations will host a range of activities to get the heart racing. Throughout the day giant games including Jenga, Scrabble and Connect Four will be available to entertain the whole family. The Shepparton Golf Club is hosting a SNAG golf clinic from 10 am to noon for juniors and beginner adults. SNAG gold is a development program that contains all the elements of golf in a modified form, making it easy and fun for children and adults to learn and play, all while under the watchful eyes of Shepparton Golf Club’s PGA professionals. Participants are asked to be sun-smart and bring a bottle of water. Ready Steady Go Kids will host two clinics — from 11 am to noon, and 1 pm to 2 pm — for children aged 2½ to six years old. The clinics are designed to introduce preschoolers to the fundamentals of 10 different sports (soccer, tennis, basketball, hockey, golf, AFL, rugby, athletics, cricket and T-ball) in a fun and non-competitive environment. Any child who wants to participate must wear comfy clothes, sports shoes and bring a bottle of water. AFL Goulburn Murray will have its

18 Challenge Shepparton 2016

inflatable equipment at the lake from noon to 2 pm for children of all ages. The play zone will consist of a giant jumping pillow shaped like the MCG with a slide and inflatable goals, as well as the ‘cube’ which has goals to kick at, a ballmarking side, and a handball target. Any children wanting to have a go in the AFL Goulburn Murray play zone need to wear running shoes with socks.

The Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival has a range of pop-up activities for people of different ages and abilities available on Saturday.

Playball Goulburn Valley will have an obstacle course at the lake from 2 pm to 3 pm for children aged two to eight years old. The obstacle course will challenge children to run, jump and balance, testing their accuracy. Children who want to complete the obstacle course will need to wear closedtoe shoes or running shoes and a hat for sun protection. They will also need to bring a bottle of water. Get Into Cardio Tennis will host fun, social tennis-based games during the pop-up activities for those aged 12 and older from 3 pm to 4 pm. The games will help participants develop their tennis skills, and is a come-and-try session because the program will continue to run for four weeks. Anyone wanting to get involved in the tennis session should come ready in active wear and running shoes. Information regarding the session will be available at Victoria Park Lake from 10 am.

Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival program All abilities, different distances and assorted activities — that’s what the Shepparton Multi-Sport Festival is all about. Challenge Shepparton event co-ordinator Liz Connick said the Multi-Sport Festival was a chance to get everyone involved. “The festival enables the local community to get involved in a race activity,” Ms Connick said. “It also provides other options for visitors when partners or friends are perhaps competing in the big triathlon event — the visitors then have something to try out.” Watch all the action of the festival live from Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, to support the efforts of the athletes giving it their all.

New length for swim race Swimmers will compete for the first Aqua Shop Lake Dash champion title in the inaugural race on Saturday, November 12. The race, which is 650 m in length, is an addition to the already popular 1.2 km and 1.9 km open-water swims being held during the Multi-Sport Festival.

The swim courses are marked for sighting with each swimmer receiving a swimming cap and timing chip as part of their $25 entry fee.

Starting at the southern end of Victoria Park Lake, the lake dash swimmers will hit the water following a race briefing at 1 pm.

Ms Connick said the open-water swims, especially the lake dash, were an opportunity to experience something new.

Challenge Shepparton event co-ordinator Liz Connick said the lake dash was an attainable race for an everyday swimmer. “The 650 m distance is achievable with a small amount of training,” she said.

OFFICIAL ENTERTAINMENT PARTNER

A briefing for the long-course swims at 1.30 pm will be followed by the start of the 1.2 km race at 1.35 pm and the start of the 1.9 km race at 1.40 pm — all kicking off from the north end of the lake.

“Ever looked out at our beautiful lake and thought ‘imagine swimming a lap of that’?” she said. “Open water swimming is a different experience because you don’t have lanes to follow. (The swims) are the one time of the year the lake is open for swim races.” Ms Connick said organisers were expecting the weather to contribute to mild water temperatures, making wetsuits optional for the race.

Jane Anderson competing at this year’s Shepparton Running Festival.

After a long break, Toolleen’s Jane Anderson was back into triathlon last year with the Shepparton Hexman Triathlon. This year, she is returning to take on the full distance at Challenge Shepparton. Although the training has not been a walk in the park, Ms Anderson has found it a bit easier than last year. “Last year had been 25 years since my last triathlon … I needed to drastically get myself fit and lose a lot of weight,” Ms Anderson said. The 48-year-old had stopped triathlons because of the overwhelming nature of family priorities and work commitments. Then, with the help of a coach, Ms Anderson was back into swimming, cycling, running and a healthy diet as of February last year. “I thought if I was going to do all that, I may as well get back into triathlons,” she said. The inspiration for getting back into triathlons came after Ms Anderson was diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

SHEPPARTON & MOOROOPNA

“I love it and I think it’s really important for our health going forward that middleaged women such as me need to put the running shoes back on and get riding again.

Although running was her weakest leg in triathlons, Ms Anderson’s attitude was one of improvement and in order to correct this, she has competed in seven marathons in the past four months. “It’s a huge commitment — when I look at how much work I have to put into training every day and every week, I just need to take it one day at a time.” Most days, Ms Anderson gets up at 5.30 am and trains before work, in the middle of the day and after work.

“I had a huge sensitivity to carbs, so by cutting carbs I got my insulin levels under control and took myself off the diabetes path,” she said.

Her commitment is so unwavering Ms Anderson even competed in a half marathon on her honeymoon last month on the Italian Riviera.

In addition to this, her son went to university, so Ms Anderson had a little more time for herself.

Challenge Shepparton is part of Ms Anderson’s preparation for the 2017 Ironman challenge.

Community fund to benefit Half of all Challenge Shepparton 2016 Community Team Challenge entry fees will be donated to The Community Fund Goulburn Valley thanks to an exciting new partnership. The Community Team Challenge is a sprint-distance race designed for groups not quite ready to take on the full length of the Challenge Shepparton course. Challenge Shepparton event manager Kelvin Maude said the new ties between

Challenge Shepparton and The Community Fund Goulburn Valley were an ideal way and platform to get companies, clubs and groups together to do some fundraising for the fund. Mr Maude said, in the spirit of fundraising,

the 50 per cent entry fee donation seemed like an ideal split. “We’re delighted to be partnering with The Community Fund,” he said. “We wanted to share as much as possible of the revenue; we wanted to make a significant contribution to the charity.” Community Fund Goulburn Valley chief executive officer Cheryl Hammer said

McPherson Media Group had been a longtime loyal and generous supporter of the fund, and it was great the two groups had been able to find a way to partner again. “The Challenge event has been a fantastic thing since The News has taken over and we’re just thrilled to be able to partner with them to encourage people to participate,” Ms Hammer said.

Inspired to contribute Two teams from SPIIRE are preparing to battle it out on the Community Team Challenge course for office bragging rights and glory. For the past month the SPIIRE teams have been fundraising their entry fees for the race with morning teas and weekly raffles. Office manager Jeramy Blight said after missing out on involvement opportunities for Challenge Shepparton in 2015, SPIIRE was looking for ways to be involved this year and got in touch with Community Fund Goulburn Valley chief executive officer Cheryl Hammer. “SPIIRE likes to try and participate in community activities. Generally individuals do the triathlon but we thought, ‘let’s put some teams together and contribute to a good cause’,” Mr Blight said. “We live in the community and our business contributes a lot to shaping Shepparton. Our involvement in that is why we want to contribute back to the community we live in.” Administration officer Lauren Blizzard said the Community Fund Goulburn Valley was a good cause to get behind because the money stayed local for local people and any donation made would help the area. Swimming for team one is construction engineer Alan Tonks who will be followed by director Michael Lewis on the cycle leg and Ms Blizzard on the run leg. Civil engineer Lloyd Harriott will kick off the swim for team two, with Mr Blight taking up the cycle leg and planner Briana Barnes finishing the race with the run. Office banter has become more and more prevalent as the

competition between the two teams intensifies and non-team members pledge their support. “There will be a betting competition going on. Most will come down and have a look,” Mr Blight said. “They’re all very supportive,” Miss Blizzard said.

Both teams are confident they will finish the race, however Miss Blizzard said the focus was on who finished first and claimed bragging rights in the office. “Everyone’s really excited and looking forward to it,” she said.

Staff members rise to the challenge Commonwealth Bank Shepparton staff members Will Ford, Ben Ruscoe and Julia Thomas will compete in this weekend’s Community Team Challenge.

Helping the community with its finances is no foreign task to the Commonwealth Bank Australia’s High St branch’s Community Team Challenge group entrants.

Participating in the event was a natural progression for the team members, who said they had been talking about participating in some kind of triathlon race for years when they caught word of the Community Team Challenge and its fundraising benefits. “We know the funds stay local, it’s a locally-based organisation, and our clients are local,” Mrs Thomas said. The CBA encourages its staff to be involved in wellbeing programs and Mr Ruscoe said he thought the race would be a great event for the office to be involved in at a community level. “It’s important for the Commonwealth Bank that we’re involved in community events,” he said. The team had plans to fundraise most of its entry fee with a branch morning tea and other team events.

“We don’t do things by half in this office,” Mr Ruscoe said. The team members have some professional and recreational experience in their respective race legs, which they hope will help them during the race. In the past Mr Ruscoe has competed in full-length triathlons but is now focusing on cycling, training on his bike three to four mornings a week. An annual competitor in the Pier to Pub event in Lorne, Mrs Thomas said she did not usually train much for the ocean swim but had been swimming twice a week in preparation for the Community Team Challenge. Mr Ford has only begun running recreationally in recent months following a knee injury in July this year. He said while he was currently untested on the length of his leg, he could not wait for the race. The team’s goal is to finish the race, preferably not in last place. “We’re looking for a good time and just to participate,” Mrs Thomas said.

Manning the hydration station The Toolamba water station for the cycle leg of Challenge Shepparton will be dutifully manned by the recently merged Murchison-Toolamba Football Club. Manning the station last year was the Murchison under-18 team, however following the merger of the Murchison club with the Toolamba club this year the merged-club president Craig Thompson said Murchison-Toolamba Football Club aimed to have more members involved. “All day (last year) we had 30 volunteers just handing drink bottles to the cyclists as they came through on their loop,” Mr Thompson said. “The under 18s had a ball on the drink station. They had a little bit of a water fight to finish the day off. “This year it won’t just be the under-18s involved, there will be some senior players and netball players too.” Mr Thompson said last year’s volunteer effort was a great off-season program for the club. “It was a good team-building day and it

was a good opportunity to see some elite athletes in the local community,” he said. “I’d done it with the previous footy club I was involved in and I thought it was a good opportunity for our club to be involved in, with where it operates.” On top of running the drink station again, Mr Thompson said the club had also volunteered to do some marshalling along the roads. “Hopefully this year we’ll have some more volunteers ready to help out to make it more of a fun day.” Mr Thompson said volunteering with Challenge Shepparton was a great opportunity to be involved in a great community event. “Challenge brings a lot of people to Shepparton and in the rural areas in the cycle loop we get to see these people come through,” he said.

CHALLENGE SHEPPARTON

The Swimming Specialists

we aretriathlon !

Sharyn and Charlie White and their sons (front) Bailey, 11, and Jaidyn, 7, are all gearing up to compete this Challenge Shepparton weekend.

Family-friendly sport A Finley family of four will rise to the challenge during this year’s sprint-distance triathlon. Sharyn White, her husband Charlie, and their two sons Bailey, 11, and Jaidyn, 7, have been competing in triathlons for three years.

Mrs White’s favourite leg of the triathlon often changes. This year she said she was swimming better and was a bit slower in the other two legs.

The family began its triathlon journey by joining the family-oriented Shepparton Tri Club.

“I would like to beat my time from last year, but from last year’s event for the next seven months I didn’t train. I’m only getting back into it now, so I’m not sure if it’s a realistic expectation to beat that time.”

Since then, the family has competed in about 15 triathlons, as well as duathlons in the colder seasons. Mr and Mrs White now train about five nights a week, while their children complete varying levels of training. “We have to travel to a pool at this time of year, so we’re trying to swim two times a week,” Mrs White said. “Sometimes we do the park run in Cobram and for cycling we’re members of the Cobram Barooga Cycling Club.” Training and competing has become so much a part of the White family’s way of life that Mrs White said her sons had begun to think everyone participated in triathlons. “They think it’s normal and that everyone does it,” Mrs White said. Spending time with her family and watching her children compete is Mrs White’s favourite part about triathlons and she said she would not enjoy competing without them. “We have gone to a Shepparton Tri Club event on a Victorian public holiday and left our kids at school (in NSW) and it was not the same without them,” she said.

When it comes to competing, Mrs White said her husband was definitely the most competitive but all four family members had a competitive nature. Mr White said having his wife training and competing alongside him definitely pushed him to try harder and stay ahead of her. “(It’s) great to be doing it as a family, and training regularly with my wife,” he said. This year’s Challenge sprint-distance triathlon will be youngest White family member Jaidyn’s first Challenge triathlon. He said his favourite leg of the competition was the bike ride, and his goal was to try to get on the podium. Bailey, who competed in the same event last year, said it was fun to compete in triathlons and he wanted to train really hard to be really good at it. Watching her children compete on the Saturday is something Mrs White said she was really looking forward to during the Challenge Shepparton weekend. “I will love watching Bailey compete and Jaidyn compete for the first time.”

Nunawading returns to club row

Aquamoves’ back gates will open this Challenge Shepparton weekend as the triathlon event coincides with the season opening of the centre’s outdoor pool and leisure park.

The atmosphere of the Challenge Shepparton weekend is heightened by a city of tents that appears at Victoria Park Lake as part of Shepparton Renault Club Row.

Centre manager Marcus Cook said visitors would be able to access all of Aquamoves’ facilities, including the gymnasium, indoor pools, spas and sauna, group fitness classes, and the outdoor pools.

Nunawading Triathlon Club is just one of many clubs that travel far and wide to compete in the event, pitching a tent for its participants to use as a home base.

Mr Bonacci said Challenge Shepparton was a well-run event and is his personal favourite event on the Victorian triathlon calendar.

Club president Angelo Bonacci said the club had been travelling to Shepparton since he joined as a member six years ago.

“It is the event I look forward to attending the most. Out club gets behind it massively ever year, we have just as many supporters there as we do participants Mr Bonacci said.

“All our pools will be life-guarded, the cafe will be open for business and the main centre will be open as usual with the water slide, Rapid River and Tarzan rope,” Mr Cook said. The main drawcard of the weekend will be the outdoor pools where Mr Cook said families and friends were welcome to come and watch competitors participate in the triathlon, while enjoying the giant inflatables on the 50 m pool. “We want to absolutely welcome and encourage visitors to the region to pack their bathers and visit,” Mr Cook said. “You can stand in the splash park and watch competitions go past. People can

28 Challenge Shepparton 2016

sit on the deck, enjoy the sun and watch the race.” Aquamoves will again host the swim leg of the Trikids event in its outdoor 50 m pool this year following the event’s oneyear stint in Victoria Park Lake. “We are super-excited to have the kids’ tri back in the pool. It provides a much safer environment for kids and beginners,” he said. Mr Cook said Challenge Shepparton participants would be able to complete their warm-up in the 50 m pool, and then use the centre’s change rooms and showers following their events. “Aquamoves will be an extension of the Challenge atmosphere,” he said. “We are excited to support the premier event in town. We think it’s fantastic for the town and the centre wants to be part of it.”

“We bring our tent from Melbourne on the Saturday prior to the race. It’s basically used by our club members as a facility to get changed and leave their bag. Any supporters can base themselves at the tent as they view the participants run around the course,” Mr Bonacci said. “We also have a massage table and a physio in there who gives our participants a massage after the race.” The amount of club members who travel to Shepparton each year varies, however about 30 are expected to make the trek this year to compete as individuals and in teams.

“If you’re there and racing you’re almost treated like a rock star for a day, with the amount of supporters we have.” Nunawading Triathlon Club has a good record in the event, with members regularly winning their race groups. Mr Bonacci said the club was also the most active and supportive of the Challenge Shepparton after party, which they are looking forward to again this year. “It’s a fantastic weekend and we really enjoy getting up there,” he said.
