Welcome

THE FESTIVE CHEER IS PALPABLE AND THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT IS ALIVE IN ECHUCA MOAMA. December is a month of exploration and discovery in the Campaspe Shire. With my trusty selfie stick in hand, I’ll be embarking on a journey to capture the ultimate Christmas insta shot at the Illumination Stations in Echuca, Kyabram and Rochester. But the adventure doesn’t stop there. I’ll be seeking out the community-led Christmas light displays and selfie spots in Colbinabbin, Girgarre, Gunbower, Lockington, Nanneella, Rushworth, Stanhope and Tongala, each offering an enchanting experience. On New Year’s Eve, the whole family is invited to catch the free shuttle bus to the Echuca Racing Club’s Kids and Family Day. This special event is designed to entertain the whole family with live music and a plethora of free kids’ activities. On New Year’s Eve, head to the Rich River Golf Club for music, food, drinks and a midnight fireworks spectacular. If you can swim, run or ride a bike, the action-packed Echuca Moama Tri Club multi-sports weekend is for you. I’ll settle in to watch from the banks and join everyone at Morrison’s Winery at the end of the Wharf to Winery swim. For a random chance to win a boat, I’m throwing a line in the Edward Kolety River at Deniliquin for the annual fishing challenge. The Riverboat Music Festival, a highlight of the summer, brings the sounds of the best Australian music to town. This year, the festival promises an unforgettable experience with performances from Ian Moss, The Cruel Sea, John Butler and many more acts. A dedicated group of artists has gathered for the first time in 2025, opening their studios and community art galleries for the Campaspe Artist Studio Trail. This is chance to take a look around the studios and get a glimpse into the art scene. To round out the summer, River Daze 25 will have us all rockin’ out to the Baby Animals on the banks of the Murray River in Barham Koondrook on March 1. Merry Christmas, and have a safe and happy summer holiday.

Hot tribute show rocks

MATCHBOX TWENTY AND ITS FRONTMAN ROB THOMAS HAVE BEEN WEAVING SOUL, POP AND ROCK TOGETHER INTO A TAPESTRY OF EMOTIONAL RESONANCE FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS WITH SONGS LIKE PUSH, 3AM AND SMOOTH. And now they are coming to the Rich River Golf Club, not the actual band, but the Matchbox Twenty and Rob Thomas Tribute Show. The backbone of the band is Ronny on bass, Tim on guitar and Paul on drums, who have been playing the hits together for 18 years. “We do our absolute best to play the songs as people would recognise them on the radio,” Ronny said. “We don’t try to do live versions or our own interpretation of the music. “We have modelled everything very much on the Matchbox Twenty albums. “So, when people hear us play, they will recognise it as what they have listened to over the years.” Over many years, the tribute members have painstakingly worked to replicate Matchbox Twenty as accurately as possible. “There are a lot of instruments that we don’t play, like horns, synths and Hammond organ and all that kind of stuff,” Ronny said. 12

What’s On

“We have created our own backing tracks to go with the songs. “Part of that process is painstakingly for hours upon end, listening to the same track repeatedly, trying to pick out the individual instrument to find out what it is doing and how it sounds and how you can replicate that on a backing track. “A lot of work over the years has gone into that, but the whole point is to make it an authentic, recognisable Matchbox Twenty.” Ronny’s favourite Matchbox Twenty track to play is 3AM, as it lifts up the audience towards the end of the night and is fun to play. Recently, the tribute band onboarded a new singer, Sean Black, who is a solo performer in his own right. “Sean’s band actually supported Rob Thomas and shared a stage in the past, so it is a pretty cool thing to boast about,” Ronny said. ‘Now, give me your heart, make it real or else forget about it,’ at the free Matchbox Twenty and Rob Thomas Tribute Show at Rich River Golf Club on December 14.

over the weekend, with record numbers for attendance expected. Echuca-Moama Tri Club president Sarah Mulkearns said the club was excited about the weekend and how the events continued to grow every year. “We had 250 at our sprint triathlon, 50 juniors at their event, and we had nearly 200 at the Wharf to Winery last year, so the event is building up every year, which is great,” she said. “There is lots of excitement for our multi-sport weekend, we had a record number of people in the sprint triathlon last year, and we had our biggest numbers for the Wharf to Winery as well, so everyone is really keen to get out into the water in January.”

Barmah

Explore Yorta Yorta heritage GAKA YAWAL NGULLA — YENBENA YORTA YORTA WOKA — COME WALK WITH US, THE PEOPLE ON YORTA YORTA COUNTRY. Traditional Yorta Yorta lands lie on both sides of the Murray River, roughly from Cohuna to Wodonga, stretching north to Jerilderie and south to Euroa. They include towns such as Echuca, Shepparton, Benalla, Corowa and Wangaratta

THE DHARNYA CENTRE The Dharnya Centre, in Barmah National Park, is the cultural hub of the Yorta Yorta People. This special place gives the Yorta Yorta People a place to share their knowledge, teach others, celebrate and heal country. Unfortunately, the centre was damaged in the 2022 floods and has not been open to the public since then. This will hopefully change with renovations completed and an expected opening date before the end of 2024. Starting from the Dharnya Centre, take any of the three designated walking trails through the Barmah Forest. The Yamyabuc Trail includes numerous information boards that tell some of the story of Barmah National Park as a leisurely 45 to 60-minute walk on a designated walking track. The Lake Loop Walk heads north from the Dharnya Centre, through the forest and then cuts back to the lake, over about 4.5 km. When you go out on that walk, it is like you are the only person in the world at that time, and it is just that tranquil. Since the 2022 flood event, the forest has flourished, the return of the kangaroos, emus and the bird life is just amazing, and there is a reasonable chance to see them on a walk. There is also the Broken Creek Loop track, which heads south from the Dharnya Centre and picks up the Broken Creek, where you follow the creek

back to Rice’s Bridge and then back to the Dharnya Centre via Sand Ridge Track, a walk of about 3.5 km. If you want a unique perspective, you can book a Yamyabuc Trail Cultural Guided Walk with one of the Yorta Yorta guides, who will share their cultural knowledge of the lands, plants and animals.

KINGFISHER RIVER CRUISES On board the Kingfisher, take in the Yorta Yorta People’s past, present and future with a 90-minute cruise along the Murray River. From the comfort of the Kingfisher River Cruiser, you can enjoy the cultural commentary and witness the abundant wildlife that calls these waterways and forests home.

BIRD WATCHING The Barmah Lakes wetlands and Barmah National Park are Ramsar-recognised sites, home to over 200 bird species. You can follow the designated trails to witness the forest birds or walk along the edge of the Barmah Lakes and see the many and varied water bird species that frequent this majestic place. You could see the endangered superb parrot and many other beautiful birds, including parrots, thornbills, honeyeaters and wrens. For more information about the Dharnya Centre, including opening times, workshops, guided walking tours, bird watching and Kingfisher River Cruises, see dharnyacentre.com.au/ What’s On

On Saturday, February 15, acclaimed Aussie icons The Cruel Sea will hit the festival stage alongside powerhouse singer-songwriter Dan Sultan, recently reformed Little Birdy, indie folk rockers Pierce Brothers and Grace Cummings, enchanting First Nations singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara and Ballarat’s favourite son Skyscraper Stan & The Commission Flats. Then, on Sunday, February 16, Riverboats is thrilled to welcome roots icon John Butler to the festival stage, alongside NZ Hall of Fame superstar Bic Runga, Afro-futurists Owelu Dreamhouse, Dan Kelly’s Regional Crisis and alt-country duo Hana & Jessie-Lee’s Bad Habits. The festival’s legendary paddle steamer sideshows are also set to return in 2025. A true highlight of any Riverboats weekend and guaranteed to sell out once again, music fans are invited on a one-hour jaunt down the Murray aboard the historic PS Pevensey while enjoying performances by Emily Wurramara, Pierce Brothers, Skyscraper Stan & The Commission Flats and The Pleasures. With its single stage under a canopy of towering river red gums, Riverboats is widely considered one of the most laid-back and family-friendly festivals on the summer calendar. Tickets are on sale at riverboatsmusic.com.au 26

Discover artists’ studio trail

CAMPASPE ARTISTS STUDIO TRAIL WILL BECOME AN ANNUAL WEEKEND OF OPEN STUDIOS THROUGHOUT THE CAMPASPE SHIRE. In the heart of Campaspe Shire, a hidden artistic community is poised to step into the spotlight.

Three community art spaces — Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, Rushworth Art Depot, and the Foundry Arts Space in Echuca — will participate for those without a publicly accessible space.

The Campaspe Artists Studio Trail, scheduled for February 22 and 23, 2025, is set to showcase the region’s creative talent in a distinctive and personal manner, making it a must-see event.

“The studio trail offers a unique art engagement experience,” Dey said.

Event organiser Dey Alexander moved to Kyabram a decade ago and stumbled upon a thriving creative community.

“Unlike a gallery, it attracts people who might not consider themselves art enthusiasts or feel intimidated by traditional exhibitions.

“The studio trail’s concept was born from a desire to bring our community’s hidden creativity to the forefront,” Dey said.

“We’re aiming for a friendly event where people can meet the artists face-to-face.”

While studio trails aren’t groundbreaking, they typically flourish in areas renowned for their artistic communities. “In our area, it’s a bit more concealed,” Dey said. “I simply wanted to make it more visible to people.” The event is expected to feature at least 25 artists opening their studios across Campaspe Shire. 28

What’s On

Visitors will be able to observe artists at work, ask questions, and potentially ignite their creative spark. “We’re hoping most artists will demonstrate their techniques, allowing people to witness the artmaking process first-hand,” Dey said. December 14 | Moulamein

Action on track IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR QUINTESSENTIAL COUNTRY RACING, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN 2024 MOULAMEIN RACES. Moulamein Racing Club’s annual meet is on Saturday, December 14 at Centenary Reserve in Moulamein, with the first jump at 11 am. The day includes a six race program run on a dirt track, the 100 m straight is lined with private, trackside and fully catered marquees. General admission is $25.

Moulamein Racing Club president Alison Glenn emphasised the enormity of the annual race day for the town of Moulamein, particularly as it has been running for 143 years. “Having our annual race meet is a massive deal for our town, it’s a lot of work but the committee we have is great, and it’s always an exciting day,” she said.

The crowd’s attire is everything from relaxed country to high country race fashions, all chasing the highly prized title of queen of Fashions on the Field.

“This is our 143rd race meeting, which is a big celebration, last year it was a great event after returning from a couple of missed years due to COVID.

There are several food vans to satisfy a range of appetites with plenty of free entertainment for the kids, including face-painting, jumping castles, magicians and a musician playing all day.

“We are a small community who comes together to get this event up and running, we get beyond 1000 people to our meeting every year, which is a big thing for us.”

There will be courtesy buses running throughout the day, with the entire event organised and executed by volunteers.

Rochester | February 21-22

It’s showtime at Rochester

THE ROCHESTER AGRICULTURE SHOW IS BACK BIGGER AND BETTER OVER TWO DAYS AT THE ROCHESTER RECREATION RESERVE, WITH EVERYTHING YOU LOVE ABOUT A GOOD OLD COUNTRY SHOW. Rochester A & P Association Inc. secretary Maxine Weigand wants to make the Rochester Agriculture Show all about bringing the country to the city, or in Rochester’s case, the town. “Even growing up in a small country town, the town kids may know nothing about what goes on on a farm and I want to promote that going forward,” Maxine said. “On Saturday, there is kids’ entertainment to keep them occupied, but we also have things like working dogs, so people can see these fantastic dogs rounding up sheep and how they work. “We hope to have a Clydesdale with a cart that will ride around to connect all the areas. “We have food vendors, one in particular being gelati, from a dairy farm and the farmers who actually make it.

To start bringing the animals to the show a day earlier, there will be a ‘beef spectacular’ on Friday night. Then, on Saturday, February 22 it will be all about the animals from 9 am to 3 pm, with free entry for the day.

“It is a real from the cow-to-the-plate kind of scenario.”

On Saturday, there will also be all the traditional show items you would expect, including show bags, rides, fairy floss and children’s entertainment.

The Rochester Agriculture Show starts on Friday, February 21, 2025, with an evening carnival from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Saturday will heavily feature animals with a dog show, working dogs, horses, both dairy and beef cattle, goats and chickens.

The Rochester Recreation Reserve will come alive with entertainment, live music, food, drinks, mechanical bull riding, maybe the dunk tank and the 9 pm fireworks extravaganza.

The craft pavilion will run a full schedule of categories, including food, arts and crafts.

January 1 | Echuca

Harness racing celebrations RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A PACKED CARD OF HARNESS RACING WILL ONCE AGAIN BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY IN ECHUCA MOAMA THIS JANUARY 1. The Frank Ryan Raceway will play host to Echuca Harness Racing Club’s biggest meeting of the year, with the Echuca Pacing Cup and Echuca Trotters Cup both up for grabs. “It’s our biggest meeting of the year, and it’s probably one of the biggest attended harness meetings throughout the state for the year,” club president Shane Gloury said. “It’ll be a similar type of format to what we had last year, but we’re going to have fireworks after the last race on the card.” “We think that will be really well received, particularly by the visitors and families in attendance, and we’re hopeful that we get a good strong crowd on course.”

Club will let race-goers take their mind off the form guide and focus on a great night on and off the track. For more information, visit echucaharnessracingclub.com or phone 5482 2036. Just weeks earlier, Lords Raceway in Bendigo will be in the spotlight for the Elmore Pacing and Trotters Cup. This year’s edition is scheduled for Wednesday, December 18 with a nine-race card set to be contested, highlighted by the eponymous Elmore Pacing Cup, boasting a winners purse of $10,000.

Along with the addition of fireworks, off-track activities are set to return with entertainment, food and refreshments all to be on tap for the meet.

Race-goers will be spoilt for choice in the holiday season as Gunbower will also hold its flagship harness meeting, the Gunbower Pacing Cup on Sunday, December 8.

Punters will be well-supported with TAB on site and, for those so inclined, the popular $10 Punters

Uncover Echuca’s rich history

Echuca

THE PORT OF ECHUCA, AN HISTORIC GEM NESTLED ALONG THE MURRAY RIVER, INVITES VISITORS ON A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY THROUGH AUSTRALIA’S INLAND RIVER SYSTEM AND PADDLE STEAMER TRADE HISTORY. The interpretative centre, a beacon of knowledge, starts the experience by showcasing audiovisual models, displays and special exhibits that breathe life into the past and enlighten visitors about the region’s rich history. You may stumble upon an engineer in the Kevin Hutchinson Steam Shed, eager to chat about steam power while stoking the boiler. This unique encounter offers a peek into the paddle steamers’ mechanical heart, making you feel part of the historical narrative. The Port of Echuca’s largest vessel, PS Pevensey, offers hour-long Murray River cruises. The authentic PS Pevensey is unique because it is still powered up and down the river with its original steam engine. Passengers can enjoy the summer breeze on the deck as they cruise the river, enjoying a cool drink from the onboard licensed bar and galley.

The wharf offers some of the Murray River’s most stunning views. The historic wharf was 332 metres long at its longest, but sadly, only a quarter of its original length remains. The cargo shed above and below the wharf is a haven for families. It houses a kids’ space, ensuring fun for all ages and making you feel welcome. Kids’ adventure tours will run during the summer holidays, including a special take-home Port of Echuca after-dark gift with each child’s ticket. The kids get to dress up and go into areas by torchlight that are not usually frequented at night, including along the Murray esplanade, the cargo shed, and underneath the Echuca Wharf, sharing stories about life back in the 1800s with tales of murder, mud pirates, smugglers and pickpockets. Port After Dark tours are for everyone to journey back in time and discover the secrets of the past by lantern.

As the paddle steamer meanders along the river, passengers can soak in the scenic landscape and tune into the captain’s commentary on points of interest.

The interpretative centre and wharf are open daily from 9am to 5pm, with extended hours during peak seasons.

The cruise highlights steam power’s pivotal role in the Port of Echuca’s development.

The Port of Echuca will be closed on Christmas Day, the only day it is closed for the year.

The nationally heritage-listed Echuca Wharf, the precinct’s centrepiece, allows visitors to explore a true-blue Aussie icon.

Entry is free, welcoming visitors and locals alike.

Daily guided tours dish out insights and amusing tales about the area’s pre-federation history.

What’s on the bite? PEOPLE LOVE TO CHASE FISH, AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO FIND THE BEST LOCAL FISHING SPOTS THAN TO ASK A LOCAL. Rochester and District Angling Club secretary Tom Reid has been chasing the fish around the district for a while now. Tom thinks it is important to be in the right place at the right time for a catch. The only thing is, sometimes, he still doesn’t know where and when that is. “You just travel up and down the river until you find somewhere,” he said. “You might try for 10 minutes in one spot and nothing happens, so you just keep moving along. “I will sit out on the boat all day and if I don’t get a bite, so what? It doesn’t worry me.” Tom finds that Murray cod likes fast-flowing water in areas with debris, whereas the yellow belly (golden perch) likes slower water. Personally, Tom chases the red fin perch as they are good eating. “I find fishing in fast-flowing water where they seem to like it better, with the water flowing around snags,” Tom said. “But you will lose a lot of bait, and a lot of tackle. “You can fish off the beach, but it is fairly snaggy and you snag quite a bit. “I have caught cod off the beach, too. “If they are within the correct size, I will keep them, bring them home, and have a feed.” When asked what to do if you catch a carp, Tom said, “to bang it on the head,” as they are an invasive, widespread pest in the MurrayDarling Basin. Tom’s recommendations to chase the fish are up at Mathoura on the Murray River and the Edward River. According to the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the legal size of the fish you can catch in any freshwater area of the state is 55 to 75 cm, with a bag limit of 56

two per day for Murray cod and 30 cm with a bag limit of five for golden perch. If you catch a threatened species of trout cod in the Murray River, it must be returned to the water alive. From September to November, all fishing is prohibited in the Murray River and its tributaries between Yarrawonga Weir and the Tocumwal Rd Bridge to protect breeding populations. The Murray River is in NSW, so even if you are standing on the shoreline in Victoria and throw in a line, you will require a NSW fishing licence. Girgarre | January 8-12

Be a ‘muso’ for a day THE TOWN OF GIRGARRE IS NOT JUST A STOP, BUT A UNIQUE DESTINATION FOR COMMUNITY MUSIC LOVERS. In the heart of a small community, the Girgarre Moosic Muster has become a beacon of artistic expression and community spirit.

“Half a dozen of you have to go out and learn to play a song together, then they perform it in front of everybody,” she said.

For over two decades, this annual event has brought together music enthusiasts from all walks of life, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere.

The inclusive nature of the event is a point of pride for organisers.

Girgarre Development Group Inc president Jan Smith reminisces about the muster’s humble beginnings. “It was just one little idea that a person I had known over the years had,” she said. “I got him to get some music for the first market, and that is how the Moosic Muster grew.” What began as a simple addition to a monthly produce and craft market has blossomed into a full-fledged music festival. “I asked them all back 12 months later, just to see what they helped to create as the market had blossomed,” Jan said. “Then that night, they said, ‘We ought to have a music festival here’.” Participants can camp on-site or stay nearby, immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere. One of the muster’s unique features is the ‘Hat Band’. Jan describes it as a beaut thing where you put your name in a hat, your name is pulled out randomly. 74

What’s On

“At Moosic Muster, everyone gets the joy of performing,” Jan said. “It’s an amazing experience that pulls everyone along, from seasoned musicians to learners, the energy is always high, and the performances are always beaut.” The 2025 Moosic Muster is on Wednesday, January 8 to Sunday, January 12 and promises to be another exciting event. It will feature a focus on dance, including an Indonesian music and dance group performing with traditional instruments. On Wednesday night, there is a free family-friendly bush dance in the Girgarre Memorial Hall. Free concerts will be held at the soundshell in the Gargarro Botanic Gardens on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, in the Girgarre Memorial Hall, what everyone has learned at the ukulele workshop will be strumming on the stage, with a free concert. Get hooked at fishing comp

THE KOONDROOK BARHAM FISHING COMPETITION IS A GREAT WEEKEND OF CHASING THE CATCH, FEBRUARY 21 TO 23, 2025. The area of the Murray River that the Barham Koondrook Fishing Competition runs from the Barham Lakes Caravan Park to the Little Murray.

“If at the stage, I get to the end of October and I don’t have those 300 coming, I advertise on Facebook.

Categories for juniors and adults include the largest cod, yellow belly, and carp, with an additional champion angler prize.

“The spots go pretty quick.”

The champion angler is the person who catches the most legal-size fish over the weekend. The competition emphasises catch and release for native fish, except for carp. “Most folks that go to fishing comps know what the prizes and the comp is about,” Barham Koondrook Fishing Competition co‑ordinator Julie Sleep said.

As part of the entry fee for the fishing comp, dinner on Friday and Saturday night, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday are supplied. If you are not a fishing comp entrant, but are there with your family or want to be part of the community fun, people can buy a meal voucher for the weekend. Run on behalf of the River Raiders, the Koondrook Barham Football and Netball Club, the fishing competition helps raise funds for the club.

“When people catch a fish, they take a photo of the fish on a brag mat, and it is their choice whether to put the fish back or keep it.

“We will ask the club, ‘What do you need? What do you want to develop? And they give us an idea,” Julie said.

“We suggest releasing it.”

“At the moment, they are saving for an outdoor rotunda, so that is where the funds are going this year.”

Each year, the Koondrook Barham Fishing Competition is limited to 300 adult entries, with unlimited junior competition spots. “Entries are limited to 300 spots, and they are open to the 300 that came the year before,” Julie said.

Catch-and-release challenge is on THE EDWARD KOLETY FISHING CHALLENGE IS AN ANNUAL EVENT HELD ON THE EDWARD RIVER, FEBRUARY 7 TO 9, 2025. Kolety is the Indigenous name for the Edward River. The fishing challenge focuses on catch-and-release fishing for Murray cod and yellow belly. The event is capped at 300 entrants, with 100 sponsors and up to 100 kids participating. The event has a proven track record of success, having raised an impressive $30,000 in the past two years. This money has been used for river restocking and community projects, making a tangible difference in the local area. Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge event co‑ordinator Andrew Jefferies is proud the event has helped bring back the eel-tailed catfish to the local waters. “Fish aren’t breeding in the river naturally and coming down through the natural breeding course from Menindee Lakes through the Darling and into our river system,” he said. “There are so many weirs, locks and blockades in the way now. “So, we are trying to rejuvenate and boost the numbers. “We are probably focusing on yellow belly this year. “We have put about 36,000 yellow belly in two years and about 12,000 catfish back into the river in the last couple of years. “Hopefully, we have brought eel-tailed catfish back from extinction. “They are breeding locally again, which they haven’t been because of the stinking carp, but we are getting back on top of it.” The challenge is a catch-and-release event. Entrants take a photo of the legal native fish they 78

If you don’t want to fish but would like to come along, everyone is welcome to come to Deniliquin Memorial Park on Friday night, participate in the festivities, buy a raffle ticket and join in on the family fun.
