Show me more action

A third rodeo event has been added to the Deniliquin events calendar.

The newest is a Rodeo Services Australia amateur bull ride competition, which will be held on the opening night of the Deniliquin Show on March 1.

The Deniliquin Pastoral & Agricultural Society has partnered with Woodall Rodeo Promotions to host the competition. It is the same company which runs the Bull Ride Spectacular at the Deniliquin Ute Muster.

Deniliquin is also home to the Deniliquin Easter Saturday Rodeo Under the Stars, which is a larger Australian Pro Rodeo Association event including saddle bronc, barrel racing, rope and tie and steer wrestling events. This rodeo is run by the Deniliquin Rodeo Committee, and is an official Australia Pro Rodeo Event incorporate stock from Garry McPhee. Read more on page 11.

The Deniliquin Show will this year run from March 1 to 3, and the bull ride is only one part of an action packed schedule.

“We wanted to add even more entertainment for the Friday night,” P&A Society vice president Trudy Fanning said.

“We’ve been working to slowly grow the show, and we’re now at a point when we can add a bit more of a spectacle.

“Our aim is always to put on as much as we can, but to keep the show cost effective.”

Starting at 5.30pm, the Deni Show bull ride offers a prize of $5000 in the open competition and $2000 in the second division.

Saturday at the show will be highlighted by another high octane event - the Deni Show Demolition Derby.

In this competition, $2000 is up for grabs for first place, $800 for second and $500 for third.

Also new to the show this year is the addition of stock horse classes in the equestrian arena, in partnership with the Deniliquin branch of the Australia Stock Horse Society. This adds to an equestrian schedule already so full it runs over three days.

The Deniliquin Yard Dog Association is back with its Deni Yard Dog Trials, as is the Riverina Quick Shear, the Riverina Shearing Championships and the Saturday night fireworks display.

Each complements an already action-packed traditional rural show schedule, which includes livestock judging (sheep and beef and dairy cattle) and wool and poultry pavilions.

The traditional junior judging competition - most commonly referred to as the tiny tots competition, but for babies right through to teenagers - is also still a very popular part of the Deni Show.

Pair this with a colourful pavilion of local arts, crafts and cookery, a vibrant sideshow alley and more around the grounds entertainment, and you’re on to a winner for a top weekend of family entertainment.

The Deniliquin Show is hosted at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park showgrounds. Admission for the full duration of the show is $20 for adults, $5 for children aged five to 18 and free for children under five attending with an appropriate adult. Music on the plains

The band with the best 2023 rock album in Australia will take over the Deniliquin Festival Site stage for Play on the Plains on March 9.

ARIA award winners King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will headline an amazing showcase of talented musicians which also includes Baker Boy, Northeast Party House, Alex Lahey, Kita Alexander, and The Carp Factory.

Between sets, some of the best up and coming bands from across the country will get their chance to shine in the Battle of the Bands competition.

They will compete in primary school, open age and solo artists sections.

Other entertainment available at the Deniliquin Festival Site – which is also home to the Deni Ute Muster held each NSW Labour Day long weekend – will include beach volleyball, a silent disco and fireworks.

There will be licensed bars, food vans, camping and plenty of free on-site parking, so get your tickets and get ready for a sensational day and night of music on the plains.

Camping is open from noon on Saturday, March 9 until 11am on Sunday, March 10. Bring your swags, tents, caravans, station wagons or campervans and have yourself a long weekend to remember.

Local bus company Dyson Group will be operating charter buses from various local regions including Hay, Cobram, Strathmerton, Barooga, Tocumwal, Finley, Blighty, Koondrook, Barham, Wakool, Kialla, Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Yarrawonga and Mulwala.

There will also be shuttle buses to and from various locations around the Deniliquin town centre. Tickets to Play on the Plains 2024 are just $120 (plus booking fee) and are on sale through Oztix. Tickets for children under 13 are only $20 (plus booking fee).

Easter art showcase

The talents of district artists has been a centrepiece of Easter in Deniliquin for more than three decades.

The Deniliquin Easter Art Show showcases hundreds of regional artists across a range of mediums over five days, and is delivered by the Edward River Art Society and the Rotary Club of Deniliquin.

The works are carefully curated to fill the Deni Multi Arts Centre and Multi Arts Hall - both beautiful buildings with historical significance to the community - right in the heart of the Deniliquin CBD.

The art show opens with a gala on Thursday, March 28, which is your first chance to see the entries and who the judges have selected as winners.

It’s also a chance to spend an evening with likeminded art lovers over canapes and drinks.

Serious and casual art lovers can then peruse the art at their own leisure from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

This popular annual event attracts an enthusiastic audience of art buyers and appreciators across the Easter long weekend.

In 2024, entries will fit into one of eight art categories - works on paper, oils, acrylics, mixed medium,

miniature and small paintings, 3D art works, black and white photography and colour photography.

There will also be three acquisitive prizes, a prize for best local scene, best local artist and best young artist.

And every guest will have the chance to vote for who they want to see win the people’s choice prize.

Easter sports action

Don’t spend your Easter glued to the television watching the footy.

Get out and explore country NSW and northern Victoria with some live games of good old country football and netball.

The two main leagues operating in the Southern Riverina district are the Murray Football Netball League and the Picola District Football Netball League. Clubs in both leagues field multiple football and netball sides, from under-11s right up to the seniors. It means you can be assured a full day of action as local rivalries heat up for the opening rounds.

Junior grades usually kick off the matches in the morning, leading up to A-grade netball and senior football rivalries in the afternoons. This may change if you happen to encounter a twilight match.

Getting in a full day of sporting action is a breeze, with each sporting venue offering a canteen and bar to keep you fed and refreshed and there is often a coffee van to keep you caffeinated.

Both the Murray and Picola Leagues kick off the 2024 seasons with round one at Easter.

The opening round for Picola offers two blockbuster games. Neighbouring Southern Riverina-based clubs Tocumwal and Berrigan will do battle in a Good Friday clash on March 29.

The Tocumwal Bloods will host the Saints for the local derby. It’s expected to be an exciting one, with Tocumwal re-joining the league after a year in the Murray League in 2023.

On Easter Saturday, the Picola League action will be hosted at Mathoura. Known as the Timbercutters due to the town’s historic economic pursuits, Mathoura will host Picola United.

Most of the Murray League action will be hosted on Good Friday, with 10 clubs playing across the league footprint that day.

One of them is the traditional Good Friday clash between the Deni Rams and the Finley Cats - it’s one of the fiercest rivalries in the league. The senior football match will be held under lights Deni will play in Finley under lights at the Hardinge St Oval. Both times the neighbouring clubs met in 2023 it was Finley who came out on top.

The traditional Good Friday match between the two clubs was a close affair, with the Cats only hanging on by one claw to win by one point - 8.14 (62) to

Deni’s 9.7 (61), at the Cats’ home ground. When they met again in round 11, Finley was more dominant claiming the win by 16 points. But as always, it was still a competitive game as shown by the low scoresFinley 10.5 (65) defeated Deni 7.7 (49).

Bolstering the Rams strength this season will be the return of AFL star Sam Lloyd to his childhood club at Deniliquin. A guest star when his AFL playing schedule allowed in other seasons, Lloyd has committed to a full season with the Rams in 2024. And coming along for the ride with him will be mate Hamish Shepheard, who spent three years in the AFL with Fremantle.

The Deni versus Finley results were reversed on the courts in 2023, with the Deniliquin Rams A-grade netballers far to strong for Finley in both rounds last year. On Good Friday, the Deni Rams A-grade came away with a 61-6 win.

Other Good Friday games will see Mulwala host Congupna, Tongala host Nathalia, Moama host Echuca United and Numurkah host Rumbalara. The lone Easter Saturday clash for round one will be held at Cobram, when the Tigers take on border community neighbours Barooga.

A jousting demonstration has been added to the already action packed Deniliquin Rodeo Under the Stars schedule on Easter Saturday, March 30.

Marisma Equine Entertainment will be providing the half-time entertainment at the popular event.

Co-owner Renae Marisma and another lady knight will go head-to-head in a realistic jousting demonstration.

“Jousting is done at a canter, which is one of the fastest gaits for a horse,” Renae explained.

“Depending on the horse, it means speeds of us to 27km and hour, which is quite fast.

“The goal is to break your lance on your opponent’s shield.

“We wear full armour custom made for us, which weigh between 35kg and 45kg, and have specialised saddles.

Medieval and thrills spectacular

If you’ve only ever seen jousting on the TV or in the movies, that’s about to change.

“It is all historically accurate, and while it is gaining momentum, it is still an uncommon sport in Australia particularly.”

The jousting will complement a full schedule of the thrills and spills we’ve come to expect from the Deni Rodeo.

The rodeo is an Australian Pro Rodeo registered event that will draw the best professional riders and competitors nationwide.

They will compete in open and second division bull riding, bareback bronc and saddle bronc competitions.

Other competition sections include the bareback saddle bronc, rope and tie, steer wrestling, team roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing.

Another popular event at Deniliquin is the Pub Steer Ride Challenge, where amateur riders represent local sponsor venues.

The trophy is the Pretty Pine Hotel’s to lose in 2024. The professional and amateur riders will be paired with stock from legendary rodeo stock contractor Gary McPhee, making for a real spectacle.

Food stalls, trade sites, around the grounds entertainment and a licensed bar (no BYO allowed) add to the evening.

The family friendly entertainment gets under way in the afternoon with heats and live music from 3.45pm. Also entertaining the crowd will be the Conargo Whipcrackers, who will perform just before the twilight action kicks off at 5pm.

Get fit while having fun

The world-wide phenomenon of Parkrun is well and truly alive in Deniliquin.

Parkrun started in the UK in 2004, as a means of encouraging people to be active, with a focus on inclusion and wellbeing.

It spread to Australia in 2011, and to Deniliquin via the McLean Beach Parkrun in 2021.

It is a free, timed 5km walk or run held Saturday mornings, with all abilities welcome.

The events are not competitive and are open to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

“You will never finish last, as we have a tail walker who walks at the end of the group,” founding member Lynda Barclay said.

“The event is run by volunteers who ensure everyone has a fun time and whom provide lots of encouragement.”

Walkers are just as welcome as runners, and children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dogs are also welcome, but the rule is one dog per person on a hand-held, non-retractable lead.

The McLean Beach Parkrun starts at 8am and takes place at the start of the Beach to Beach walk, at the end of the McLean Beach car park.

A volunteer welcomes first-timers and introduces them to the event 10 minutes prior to each run.

“Parkrun is very inclusive because it’s free, it’s every Saturday, and there are lots of different ways to be involved,” Mrs Barclay said.

“We have families taking part together, friends walking and talking their way around the 5k course.

“Parkrun is all about having fun and taking part in a way that’s comfortable for you.

“Some of our regulars take part most weeks, but the beauty of Parkrun is that it doesn’t require any commitment.

“You register once for free on the Parkrun website and then you can come along to any parkrun in the world on any Saturday morning if you feel like it.”

You don’t have to be a runner or walker to benefit from Parkrun.

People are welcome to watch the event and have a chat, and everyone is invited for coffee afterwards at The Crossing Café.

Country racing on Anzac Day

One of two country race meetings held in Deniliquin, the Deniliquin Racing Club will present the Anzac Day Races on Monday, April 25.

The races start after the local Anzac Day services. General admission tickets are available, or if you want to experience the races in true style, you should consider upgrading to a The Peppercorn Enclosure ticket. You get food and drinks provided until 5pm, live music, plus your entry and race guide.

Whether you select an enclosure marquee or general admission tickets, a free town bus will pick up and drop off from various clubs, pubs and motels.

The $16,000 Digger’s Cup is the feature event on a five-race card, and there will be on-site bookmakers and TAB facilities available.

National race meets will also televised during the afternoon.

Trackside on race day, there is fun for the whole family with kids’ entertainment, live music and the popular Fashions on the Field.

Get your finest autumn racing outfits organised, and enter on the day to win some fantastic prizes.

A bar will operate, and there will also be catering on site.

Two-up will be played after the final race, with all proceeds donated to Legacy. Two-up will continue that evening at the White Lion Hotel.

The Deniliquin Racing Club is one of the oldest clubs in the district, this year celebrating 152 years since formation.

Over the years some top class horses have had their initiation racing in Deniliquin, amongst them:

Craftsman, Paignton, Commission Red, Sir Boom, to name a few.

As well as the Anzac Day Races, the club hosts the Caulfield Cup Day Races in October.

On Anzac Day, the gates will open at Deniliquin Racecourse from noon.

Deniliquin Golf Club hosts one of the most picturesque courses in the region.

You can enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature.

At its best, Deniliquin golf course with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway, and are nestled among bushland.

Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty of those available too.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the veranda adjacent the pro shop. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome. If you want to practise your game, the club has an under-cover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are on its website. These include a Saturday medley, ladies 9 holes on Tuesday, and medley events on Wednesday and Thursday. Keep an eye out for special charity days and tournaments which are held throughout the year, all listed on the club’s website.

Mathoura Bra Fence

The Bra Fence Mathoura has become an iconic attraction in the town, with thousands of bras hanging on the fence as a moving tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer. Visitors can add their own bras to the fence, creating an emotional and empowering experience. Additionally, there is a donation tin attached to the fence where visitors can contribute a dollar or two. The funds raised are used to provide petrol and food vouchers for locals undergoing cancer treatment, offering support and comfort throughout their journey. The Bra Fence Mathoura is a year-round attraction, welcoming visitors at any time of the day.

In River Country along the Murray River, there are plenty of options to enjoy the mild weather and see the leaves fall and change colour in a range of beautiful locations.

River Council encompasses the communities of Barham-Koondrook, Echuca-Moama, Mathoura and Picnic Point, Murray Downs, Swan Hill and Tooleybuc.

You can explore majestic river red gums and Ramsarlisted wetlands, and go birdwatching, fishing, bike riding and kayaking in what is part of the largest continuous red gum forest in the world.

Visit historical sites from 100 and 1000 and even 10,000 years ago. Or just kick back riverside and take in the majesty of the Australian bush.

Murray Valley National and Regional Parks

The Murray Valley National and Regional Parks stretch along the length of the NSW and Victorian border. It is an important, unique ecosystem where waterways teem with wildlife, and tracks and rivers are aching to be explored. This particular stretch of forest offers beauty even beyond that of the magnificent river red gums that adorn its banks.

Sites of interest include:

Gulpa Creek Walk (Mathoura) - an easy path to walk along with your dog and is great for birdwatching, or to go canoeing or kayaking.

Edward River Bridge Campground (near Mathoura)free camping, good facilities and dogs are welcome.

Autumn is a lovely time to explore the great outdoors of the Southern Riverina region.

Benarca Campground (15km from Moama) - provides bush camps and is an ideal spot to fish along the Murray River.

Five Mile Picnic Area (Moama) - With good facilities right by the river, this is the perfect place for a riverside picnic, with plenty of spots for fishing and places to launch your boat, kayak or canoe.

Five Mile Mountain Bike Trail (Moama) - offers 7km of purpose built mountain bike trails in beautiful bushland by the river and wetlands. The trails are suitable for all skill levels and its one of the best places for biking in the region.

Yanga National Park

Off the Stuart Highway near Balranald, Yanga National Park is one of NSW’s newest national parks. The park is where campers come to unwind and enjoy a choice of natural settings complemented by new visitor facilities. There’s ample free camping for tents, RVs and caravans, and visitors can enjoy fabulous fishing in the Murrumbidgee River or bird watching just off the highway at Yanga Lake.

Yanga Station was one of the oldest and largest properties in the Riverina, established in the 1840s. These days, as a national park, it celebrates both its pastoral history and natural wonders.

Sites of interest include the willows campground, Yanga historic refrigeration shed, Yanga homestead, the Yanga Lake walking track and viewing deck, and the Yanga Lake red gum bird hide.

Let there be light

You can see one of Moama’s popular parks in a new light this winter.

Moama Lights is an immersive sound and light trail sharing stories from across the region through stateof-the-art installations, projections and cutting edge moving light technology.

It will illuminate Horseshoe Lagoon – part of Moama’s wetland and floodplain reserve - from July 5 to 28.

The area includes a horseshoe-shaped lagoon and a billabong, which provide a home to native birds, animals, plants and fish.

It’s a place where you can wander along the boardwalks, indulge in some wildlife spotting

and learn about the importance of wetlands and floodplains along the mighty Murray River.

Add an impressive light show in the mix, and you have an experience like no other.

Produced by the world-class design studio Mandylights, the 2024 event promises to guide visitors through a new experience, celebrating the enchantment of the bush after dark.

It will take delight in the lagoon and red gum floodplains, transforming nature’s wonderland into a vibrant spectacle that emerges as darkness falls.

Moama Lights will run over four weekends, from Thursday to Sunday, with tickets sold for specific session times.

Adult tickets are $22 and children aged 3-16 are $11. Children under three can attend for free, and all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Family tickets are available, with the cost of $55 for two children and two adults.

River Daze

Picnic in the Park International Women’s Day Barham

The 2024 Rich River Rod Run - Show and Shine will be held at Jack Eddy Oval on Sunday, March 17 with live music, children’s entertainment, trade stands, displays and food stalls.

Ride the Murray

The Echuca Moama Mountain bike club is pleased to host the Ride the Murray event, which will include an urban XC event. Echuca Moama may not be known for its elevation but still has the trails to challenge new and old riders. Bringing the race to the people as an urban event will provide a fantastic spectating opportunity along Murray River’s edge. Together with support by Aus Cycling as a gold event, this will see high quality racing but maintaining new riders to the sport.

Ride the Port - Saturday, March 23 - Urban XC mountain bike racing in the Historic Echuca Port precinct. Short course race.

Ride the Track - Sunday, March 24 - Moama Five Mile Mountain Bike Park will see the XCO format race.

In its 25th year, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow aims to roll out the best stand up, sketch, and satire across venues in all corners of the nation. It will be held on May 18.

Saddle up for an Easter rodeo

Some of the best cowboys and cowgirls from across the country will take to the Finley Rodeo Arena in Tongs St from 5pm on Easter Sunday, March 31.

Competitors come from everywhere for the chance to test the stock supplied by Garry McPhee, and to win some great prizes.

An Australian Pro Rodeo Association event, points will be up for grabs for the best competitors.

It will feature all eight standard events in rodeo, classified as roughstock and timed events.

The three roughstock events are saddle bronc, bareback bronc and bull riding.

These events are scored independently by two judges. Up to 25 points are awarded to the animal by each judge for its bucking action, strength and degree of difficulty and a further possible 25 points to the contestant for his ‘style’.

The scores of the judges are added to give a score out of 100.

All roughstock events are scored over eight seconds, taken from when the animal clears the chutes. The cowboy needs to stay on board for the full eight seconds to make a qualifying ride.

The five timed events are steer wrestling, rope and tie, team roping, barrel racing and breakaway roping. There are two common elements in all timed events, except the barrel race.

The animals are given a head start or ‘score’ into the arena from a special time event chute. The mounted contestant starts from behind a rope barrier, automatically tripped by the animal as it reaches the score release point.

The second element, subject to a number of time event penalties for faults, is that the fastest time in the event wins. In all time events, there is a 10 second penalty if the barrier is broken before the animal reaches the score line.

The contestant will also be disqualified for rough treatment of an animal in a time event.

The gates to the Finley Rodeo arena will open at 5pm, with action continuing through until about 11pm.

Children’s entertainment, a bar and food will be available.

Tickets are $40 for adults, $25 for aged pensioners, $10 for children ages 7-17, and free younger children accompanied by an adult.

Leisure and history collide

Blessed with copious amounts of sunshine during all seasons, the Berrigan and Moira shires region is affectionately known as Sun Country on the Murray.

Whatever it is you like to do, you will find an attraction or activity to suit. Golf, water sports, adventure, fun, relaxing, art, fine food, wine and nature at its best, it’s all here.

Berrigan Shire is on the NSW side of the Murray River and incorporates the communities of Barooga, Berrigan, Finley and Tocumwal.

Tocumwal is one of the region’s most popular destinations for lovers of the great outdoorsboasting a swag of entertainment opportunities including camping, the mighty Murray River, water sports, bushwalking and aerobatic adventures. It is one of few towns nestled along the Murray River that has its main street truly orientated along the

river, without a twin-town based on the Victorian side of the border.

But Toc also has a history to explore, especially the role the town and its airport played in World War II. The character-filled main street and historic building facades date back to the 1860s, and Toc was home to what was the largest military aerodrome in the Southern Hemisphere during the 1940s.

Through the strong connection with aviation, the township has become a renowned worldwide destination for gliding and the airfield hosts many aerobatic events throughout the calendar year.

Things to do in Tocumwal

• Visit the beaches: The main Tocumwal Beach is a popular sandy spot on a gentle Murray River bend. Just 10 minutes’ walk from the main street of Tocumwal, the camping area welcomes all comers at a very low nightly rate. Not far west of Tocumwal is Pump Beach. It’s not far off the Tuppal Rd, but is rarely crowded, despite the large number of camp spots. A place to relax and enjoy at any time of the year.

• The Tocumwal Aviation Museum is a tourism experience where visitors can learn about the unique and significant aviation history and heritage of Tocumwal, with a particular focus on Tocumwal’s wartime contribution. The Tocumwal Aviation Museum combines historic imagery and film with informative boards, memorabilia, and artefacts.

• The Tocumwal skatepark is situated in Deniliquin St, Tocumwal. The skatepark is perfect for those wishing to perfect their scooter and skateboarding skills. It offers plenty of space to practise your drop ins, jumps and other tricks. The skatepark is part of a larger lawned area known as Apex Park. It has some seating available and there is also a concrete space with a basketball ring for those wishing to shoot some hoops.

• The Tocumwal Spalshpark is situated on the Tocumwal Foreshore. It is themed to celebrate Tocumwal’s Aviation and Agricultural history and provides hours of water play fun for all ages.
