Local MARKETS
Ask any visitor information volunteer in a small community and they will tell you one of the most common questions they are asked is ‘what markets do you have?’. In the Southern Riverina, community and farmers’ markets are filled with locally made and grown items that showcase our region and the talented people within them.
Saturday of each month is the Naponda Farmer’s Market, and on the fourth Saturday is the Deniliquin Lions Community Market.
Deniliquin
The Naponda Farmer’s Market is run by the Naponda Hospital Auxilliary in Deniliquin’s CBD. It presents an opportunity to purchase the region’s finest produce and handmade crafts, with stallholders offering fresh fruit, jams and relishes, artisan bread, locally grown potatoes, gourmet goods, handmade wood chopping boards and much more. Summer dates are December 12, January 9 and February 13 from 8am until noon.
Deniliquin hosts two great markets every month. On the second
The Lions Market is also held in the heart of the CBD and often features
You will find fresh produce, home baked goods, arts and crafts, jewellery, beauty products made with local produce, and even home decor and clothing. Here we summarise some of the best markets in our region for you. Please note, some events may be impacted by COVID-19 regulations.
clothing, plants, fishing gear, jewellery, fresh produce and other arts and crafts. The first market of summer is planned for Monday, December 28 (instead of Boxing Day) and others are to be on January 23 and February 27 from 8.30am to noon.
Moama The Moama Market is a big, popular market hosted at the Moama Soundshell Gardens. There is fresh produce, lollies and snacks, hot food, clothing, books, bric-à-brac, art, activities for the children and live music. Markets run from 8am to 2pm, and summer markets are scheduled

for December 13 and 27, January 3, 17 and 24, and February 7 and 21.
Tocumwal The Tocumwal Foreshore Markets showcase a diverse range of products each market, with up to 200 stallholder sites. Products range from fishing and sporting goods, ladies fashion, fashion accessories, jewellery and cosmetics, fresh fruit and veggies, artisan glassware, toys and bubbles, tools, sunglasses, plants and seedlings, fresh coffee, snacks for an early breakfast and more. Markets run from 8am to 1pm, and summer dates are January 2, 9 and 23 from 8am until about 1pm.
Escape to Deni
Deniliquin, better-known as ‘Deni’, is the perfect place to get away from the fast pace of modern life and take it easy. Whether you’re chasing full-throttle flips behind a motorboat, peaceful paddling among the gum trees, or just a relaxing riverside break with family, Deni should be on your radar.
for a nature-filled long weekend
Head out for a paddle Dip an oar in and glide beneath river red gums, a stunning eucalypt species that’s often found along the banks of inland rivers, and plays host to native birdlife and marsupials. Upstream of McLean Beach is the perfect spot to drop in, as waterskiing is only allowed downstream from here so you’ll be left to enjoy your peaceful paddle. Kayaks and canoes can be rented in town if you don’t have your own.
With a rich and ancient history, this riverside town is the perfect combination of natural wonders, gorgeous town gardens and a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to explore.
Hit the trails
Walk along the water
Situated on flat plains, Deniliquin and its surrounds are ideal for exploring by pedal power. Deni has a great 30km road cycling loop for keen cyclists. Head out down Hay Road, down Wandook Road and come back in on Conargo Road. If you’re looking to step things up a notch, head to the Murray Valley Regional Park and test out the Mountain Bike Trails. The trails are handlebar width and will quickly have you hooting and hollering as you blast round the fast and flowy crosscountry route. If you don’t want to bring your own wheels, pick some up from the Visitor Information Centre in George Street. Mountain bike hire is free, just call ahead on 1800 650 712.
Strolling alongside the Edward River is a brilliant way to experience the native birdlife, become immersed in the pockets of bushland along its shores and learn about Deniliquin’s history. The popular Beach to Beach walk meanders from McLean Beach to Willoughby’s Beach in the Murray Valley Regional park. At only 1.4km, the Lagoons to River Walk is great for a slow-paced family stroll.
Head to visitdeni.com.au to start planning your next weekend away. What’s On Summer 2020-21 4
From camping to glamping For prime positions and a bit of comfort, try one of Deni’s award-winning riverside parks – there’s choices to suit every style.
A stroll through history Take time out when you’re in Deniliquin to learn about the town’s rich and long history, and how it has developed over the years. One of the best ways to do this is on Deniliquin’s historic and touring walks and routes. The Town Walk takes about 60 to 90 minutes. It’s a 2.5km round trip of easy walking, highlighting historic landmarks throughout the town centre. It starts at the The Peppin Heritage Centre, which houses the former Deniliquin Public School from 1879 to 1972. The walk continues into Napier St, Cressy St and others which make up the CBD, stopping at historic hotels, Deniliquin’s war memorials, former banks, the post office, Deniliquin Town Hall, former Conargo Council Chambers, Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre, Deniliquin Court House, several churches and other historic buildings.
You will then pass by Deniliquin Hospital to the famed Ute on a Pole before coming to the site of original Punt Crossing and former Edward River swimming pool.
You will have the chance to visit the Deniliquin Airport, Deniliquin cemeteries, Lawson Syphons, Stevens Weir and the iconic Deni Ute Muster gates.
Continue by the Deniliquin fire station, through the Deniliquin Island Sanctuary and in to Memorial Park, where you will find the town’s original water tower and chimney stack.
And there a number of small townships around Deniliquin, all of which are great to visit — Pretty Pine, Conargo, Wanganella, Booroorban, Blighty and Mayrung.
To see the historical highlights outside of the Deniliquin town centre, jump in the car and take the ‘Greater Deniliquin’ route.
A brochure and walking trails maps can be collected from the Deniliquin Visitors Information Centre in George St, Deniliquin.
It ends in Deniliquin’s widely acclaimed Waring Gardens, named after the towns first town clerk John Waring, which was established in 1880 and is currently receiving a modern makeover. If you enjoyed that, give the Beach to Beach Walk a go. It is a 40 minute walk, stretching 3km and linking McLean Beach in Deniliquin’s west, the Deniliquin CBD and Willoughby’s Beach in the east. An all abilities walking and cycling track, you can join and exit it at various points along the way. There are also historical markers along the walk, and takes you to some of Deniliquin’s most iconic historic sites. In the west you will find The Deniliquin & District Historical Society Museum, which is the former Police Inspector’s Residence and has multiple displays on the region’s history.
COD SEASON OPEN The 2020 cod season is officially open. Cod season was only closed for three months but not casting those big surface lures and my favourite diving lures around took its toll.
I resorted to watching many cod fishing videos, sorting out my lures maybe on more than one occasion, replacing old fishing line with the new, upgrading blunt hooks with new, so come the start of cod season, I was ready to do battle with the mighty Murray Cod. I can’t wait. Here are a few tips that might help.
Where to fish? When targeting Murray cod look out for good flowing water with plenty of cover. Murray cod are an ambush predator, this means they will wait for their prey to come to them instead of going in search of their food. Casting your lures hard up against fallen timber and snag piles will give you the best chance of catching some quality fish. Sometimes it pays to try and think ‘if I were a fish where would be the best place to get an easy feed with minimal effort?’. Take the time when you’re on the water or even walking the banks to look out for structures and potential fish holding areas, make a mental note of these areas and plan for your next outing. What’s On Summer 2020-21 5
Fishing gear and supplies For all your fishing needs and information call in and see Pete at Betta Electrical in George St. If you’re after some great quality fishing gear and lures, here you will find a great range of surface lures, diving lures, spinnerbaits, rods and reels. When it comes to surface lures, swimbaits, hardbodies and spinnerbaits, I’d choose something that is easy to cast, makes plenty of noise and that is suited to your rod. Some surface lures and swimbaits can be quite heavy, meaning if you want to cast out large lures you might need to upgrade your rod and reel. This will also apply to the larger diving lures, I like to have a few rods that are set up for the lures I cast, be that small, medium and large.

Picturesque
GOLF COURSE Deniliquin is one of the most picturesque of the famous golf courses that stretch along the mighty Murray River and its tributaries. Enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature. With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses. It is also in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deniliquin Golf Leisure Resort has you covered with a range of two and three night packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation, which includes breakfast and organising your round of golf. Its partnership with the Deniliquin Golf Club also offers discounted golf rates within the stay and play packages. Weekend bookings will also receive a discount voucher for the golf club bistro on Friday night. The leisure resort is in a quiet location just 30m to the first tee and next door to a bushwalking track.
The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round. By modern standards the course is not long – 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition. A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities. The clubhouse is open Wednesday to Sunday with Friday nights a speciality, when there are meat raffles, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome.

VIRTUAL FISHING CLASSIC One of Deniliquin’s premier annual events — the Deniliquin Fishing Classic — will be a little bit different in its 24th year. The 2021 event — to be held February 20 and 21 — has been altered to allow people from all over Australia to enter virtually. You don’t even have to leave your hometown, and any eligible fish caught in your local waterway will be accepted.
Australian bass, carp and bream will all be eligible catches.
All registered entrants will receive an entry tag with a unique identification number, and a brag mat. When you catch your target species, simply lay the live fish on your brag mat. The nose must be in line with the ‘0’ measurement. The entire length of the fish, and your ID number, must be visible in the photo.
Photos must be uploaded to the Fishing Classic website by 7am AEDT, Monday, March 16. Any photographs uploaded after this time will not be accepted.
Any photograph that shows a fish not alive or damaged will not be accepted, and any photo which has undergone digital manipulation will be disqualified. Fresh and saltwater species like barramundi, trevally, flathead, whiting, Murray cod, golden perch, ocean perch, snapper, emperor, tuna, salmon, tailor,
Anglers can start fishing at 7am local time in their state or territory on Saturday, February 20, with fishing open until 5pm, Sunday, February 21.
The virtual Fishing Classic has been developed in response to COVID-19 restrictions, which have forced the Deniliquin Fishing Club to cancel its traditional in person events. In a ‘normal’ year, the club would host a Prizearama raffle draw, family fun night and presentation afternoon. Instead, winners will be announced on the Fishing Club’s website on February 22. There are cash prizes for first and second place entrants in each of the 15 junior and senior competition categories. What’s On Summer 2020-21 9
A boat prize will also still be up for grabs, with 1000 raffle tickets available at $10 each. If all tickets have been sold it will be drawn during the Fishing Classic weekend, otherwise drawn as soon as all tickets are sold after the event. Pre-entry for the Fishing Classic is open now. Visit www.denifishingclassic.com.au for more information.

BOAT RAMPS IN THE SOUTHERn RIVERINA
Fun on the
EDWARD RIVER Deniliquin’s beautiful river scenery is one of this community’s biggest draw cards, and it’s easy to see why. The Edward River isn’t just nice to look at, it offers so many opportunities to relax, have fun and explore this region. The easiest way to experience the Edward River is by throwing on your swimmers and heading for one of its sandy beaches. McLean Beach in the town’s west is a popular spot for locals and visitors. For the young ones, there is a dedicated swimming area. This beach is also popular with boaters and skiers, with a boat ramp situated right next to the beach. Other facilities here include a barbecue area, toilet facilities and plenty of car parking. The kiosk at the adjacent McLean Beach Caravan Park is a short walk away if you need a few extra supplies, or a special treat. McLean Beach also offers a gateway to the Beach to Beach Walk, which
will lead you through the town to Willoughby’s Beach in the east.
current take you downstream to McLean Beach.
This beach area is unimproved, and situated in the Murray Valley Regional Park behind the Memorial Park showgrounds.
For those looking for something extra to get the adrenaline pumping, the Edward is a haven for watersports. With a wide river, some great bends and brilliant summer weather, young and old give water skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing a go.
It is a great location for swimming, fishing and camping in the forest, all while giving you the opportunity to watch the sun rise and set on the river. You will find plenty of areas to camp, perfect for those wanting a bit of privacy, and there are also larger areas for the whole family and your friends. If you want to experience the Edward River like the locals, Willoughby’s Beach is where you can start your river float. Set aside a few hours, jump in the water with your floating device and supplies, and let the
Whichever way you choose to enjoy the river, don’t forget to capture those memories on camera. The Edward makes for breathtaking photos, especially in the early morning or late in the evening. Whether it is a group or family photo, or a shot of the scenery and wildlife, it is sure to look fantastic. Then you can take the Edward River with you everywhere.

Find your Sanctuary In the heart of Deniliquin is the natural wonder that is the Island Sanctuary. The picturesque sanctuary features a number of trees, grasses and animal life which are sure to intrigue anyone who enters the gates. The sanctuary has historically been accessible by a long walk bridge off Cressy St, but structural concerns lead to its removal in 2019. Instead, a new gateway entrance has been created off Memorial Park Drive in Deniliquin’s east. It formally links the attraction to the Beach to Beach walk trail which begins at Willoughby’s Beach at the end of Memorial Park Drive and follows the Edward River to McLean Beach in the west. You will emerge from the Island Sanctuary at the end of Edwardes St, which will lead you to the Deniliquin CBD for shopping, or you can continue along the river, along the all abilities access boardwalk. The predominant tree on the island is the river redgum which is complemented by black box and concentrations of young redgums where seeds have been deposited by heavy rains and flooding. Grasses such as river cooch and kikuya are dominant and provide excellent coverage.
Wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies and nocturnal animals take refuge in the island and more than 100 species of bird can be found within the sanctuary, with water birds most common. A vast majority of the animals found in the Island Sanctuary have been bred there including additional wildlife such as water rats, tortoises, skinks, lizards and snakes. Wildlife, however, is not the only attraction of the area, which is steeped in history and folklore. Near the Tarangle Creek is a tree now called Jack’s Tree, which is recorded as the marking point of the grave of notorious bushranger Old Jack of the Melville Gang. The Island Sanctuary, which covers an area of about 16 hectares, is also the perfect destination for a quiet picnic. An isolated sheltered area provides barbecue facilities for a get-together and there are plenty of picnic table areas located around the reserve near the river. For a map and more information on the Island, visit the Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre in George St or call 1800 650 712. What’s On Summer 2020-21 13

COLEAMBALLY
If you are looking for a relaxing way to pass the time in the Southern Riverina, finding a peaceful spot in a park or by the water to get lost in your favourite book is a must. Read to your heart’s content in the rotunda at Waring Gardens, Deniliquin, sit by the Murray River at Thompson’s Beach in Cobram or relax at Hayes Park in Berrigan under the trees. Need some reading material? There are plenty of places to get your hands on some classics and the latest reads. Berrigan Book Shop has you covered with 50,000 books on offer. The shop has a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction and children’s books from old and new authors. If you have an old book lying around, the shop is happy to take donations or even accept a trade in for a $2 store credit (depending on the quality of the book). Pop in and speak with Cristina and Carla at 43-45 Chanter St, Berrigan. It is open Thursday to Monday, from 10am to 4.30pm. You will also find a book exchange at Berrigan Lions Park, which is the entry to Berrigan Caravan Park. At Chrissie’s Book Lounge, located at 44 Deniliquin St, Tocumwal, the walls are lined with a large variety of second hands books to browse through and purchase. It’s also a coffee shop — a perfect pairing for a relaxing read. The airconditioner will help make it an escape this summer, and there’s a cubby house and play area for the kids.
In Deniliquin, book exchange cupboards can be found in three locations. One is located in Hodgkins St, off Davidson St beside Deniliquin Bakery. It has quickly become a popular hotspot for bookworms. There are also book exchanges found on Wood St and Finley Rd. Anyone is welcome to leave a book and take another, or borrow and return from the large collection of novels. Visitors to Cobram will find a book exchange at Cobram Florist. This service started when florist owner Jaclyn Tickell noticed a surplus of books in her nana’s flat earlier this year. She decided to turn her trash into someone else’s treasure. Readers are able to swap books or, provided they are returned, borrow a book to read during their stay. Book lovers in the Darlington Point area can pop in to River Walk Coffee & Books for their literary escape. As the name suggests, this cafe is a great place to stop when you’re out enjoying the natural wonders of the region. Delight in the tasty treats and light meals, enjoy a hot cuppa or a chilled milkshake and feel free to pluck a book from the shelf as you enjoy the atmosphere. You can purchase a book for $2, or arrange a fair exchange for one of your own. River Walk Coffee & Books is located at 14 Bridge St, Darlington Point. Happy reading, and happy exploring.

Taste your way Situated close to Coleambally is Yarrow Park, a vineyard and olive grove which is a destination for anyone who loves fine produce.
The vineyard and olive grove were established in 2005, by the fourth generation of the Dalgliesh family. The family, which originated from Scotland, has been farming in the Coleambally region since the late 1800s.
The olive grove plantings chosen to produce extra virgin olive oil consist of Leccino, Coratina, Manzanilla, Picual, Arbequina, Frantoio.
Yarrow Park is dedicated to the production of quality table olives and extra virgin olive oil, which you can sample when you stop by.
The principal variety for table olives is Manzanilla, together with Leccino, Arbequina and Kalamata. Fruit for table olives is picked by hand to ensure that only beautiful, undamaged fruit is processed.
An extra virgin olive oil can be chosen to suit your taste and requirements.
As a boutique producer, Yarrow Park’s single estate extra virgin olive oil is produced using a selection of Italian and Spanish varieties.
The boutique wines are also varietal and include Durif, Shiraz, Merlot,
Chardonnay and Rose, as well as a Tawny and a white fortified.

TOP 10 Places to cool down
What’s On Summer 2020-21 22
Summers in the Riverina boast plenty of sunfilled days that allow to you explore from early in the morning until late in the evening, thanks to Daylight Saving time. But on those days you wish to just relax, or escape the dry summer heat, each of the communities in this district feature an array of ways to cool down. We explore some of those for you in this season’s ‘Top 10’ list.
1
Tocumwal
Visitors and locals alike flock the Murray River, and particularly Town Beach, when they are in Tocumwal. But if you’re looking for something a little different, or your little ones are not a fan of the sand, the splash park on the Tocumwal Foreshore is the place to be. The features are designed to reflect Tocumwal’s proud WWII history as a US and Royal Australian Airforce Base. A B24-style dumper bucket take pride of place, and there are water cannons, ‘propeller’ showers and more than 100 other water features. The town pool is also a short distance from the splash park, and both are located near the CBD.
2
Jerilderie
Almost $2 million in upgrades have been completed at the Jerilderie Swimming Pool, just in time for summer. A new 25m, 6 lane lap and recreational pool and new shaded wader’s pool with water fountains were part of the works, as well as a new amenities block, lighting and shade sails. You’ll also find a 25m lap and recreational pool, shaded medium pool, change rooms, shaded seating and a barbecue. The pool is located at 119 Jerilderie St, Jerilderie and thanks to a Murrumbidgee Council subsidy entry is free in the 2020/21 swim season.
3
Deniliquin
You’re spoiled for choice with places to cool down in Deniliquin. If you’re not enjoying McLean or Willoughby’s Beach (see page 11) the Deniliquin Swim Centre’s three outdoor pools and splash park is the place to be. The splash park features sunflower showers, water guns and a dump bucket. There’s also toddler friendly elements including a leaf race and bucket filler. The splash park offers sun protection for its users with two shade sails sheltering the equipment. While it’s not likely to be your first pick over the summer months, the Deniliquin Swim Centre also has a heated hydrotherapy pool. Newly updated facilities are also available at the pool, which is located in Poictiers St and right next door to the Scott’s Park Adventure Playground.
4
Barooga
Part of the ever-expanding Barooga Adventure Park, the toddler-friendly water play zone alongside Bullanginya Lagoon includes a gentle water slide and splash pad designed with younger children in mind. There’s also a spray loop, and interactive ground sprays. The Adventure Park area is a winner with older kids too, with four individual trampolines, two flying foxes and a huge climbing frame keeping everyone busy for hours. It is located on Golf Course Rd.
5
Berrigan Shire
Located within 15 minutes of each other are the Berrigan and Finley Memorial Pools. Berrigan’s pool was renovated at the end of 2019, with new facilities to compliment the large and children’s-size pools. It also has multiple shaded areas and enough grassed area for the children to enjoy. It is located on Momalong St, Berrigan. The Finley Memorial Pool reopens this summer with new facilities too. The new modern, fit-for-purpose building incorporates change rooms and toilets tailored for families and the disabled, as well as a new kiosk area. The large L-shaped adult pool has enough room for all families and a shallow pool is also available for the younger kids. It is located on the Newell Highway, just north of Finley’s CBD.
6
Hay
Entry to the John Houston Memorial Pool is free, thanks to Hay Shire Council. There are three pools in total — an Olympic size swimming pool, a ‘medium’ pool, and the toddler’s pool, which is completely under cover. Surrounding the pools is an extensive, wellmaintained lawn and numerous shade structures. There is also a barbecue and volleyball net, both of which are free to use. The usual swimming season is November through to March, and the pool is open seven days a week.
7
Moama
Moama boasts two perfect spots to camp and cool off this summer. Moama Beach offers visitors one of the best places to access to the Murray River for swimming and recreation. Access to the area is found at the end of Blair St, Moama. Betts Beach also offers a chance to relax and take a dip, with access via Simmie Rd in Echuca. Here you can swim in the shadow of the iconic bridge that links NSW and Victoria. Relax in the water with views of the beautiful scenery, Echuca Wharf and wave to the historic paddle steamers chugging past.

TAKE A LAKESIDE STROLL Situated on the banks of the Murray River and with the added water frontage of Lake Mulwala, the twin towns of Yarrawonga Mulwala are a hive of waterways, farm gates and golf courses. Playing an instrumental role on the region’s irrigation systems, Yarrawonga Mulwala is well known for its delicious and varied produce. And for those who love to get out and explore on foot or on a bike, there’s a range of trails which will take you to some of the best attractions in the twin towns — including places where you can taste and purchase some of that produce the region is famous for.
The Two Bridges – Yarrawonga Weir & Main Traffic Bridge (2.8km) This walking/cycle track starts at the Visitor Information Centre at 1 Irvine Parade, Yarrawonga and crosses the traffic bridge into NSW and taking in the views of Lake Mulwala. The walk continues on to Gulai Rd, heading past the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort before crossing the weir bridge back into Victoria. The view down the river from the weir bridge is worth the walk alone. Crossing the canal bridge and following Irvine Parade back to the Visitor Information Centre for a full loop.
Yarrawonga Foreshore to Chinaman’s Island Wetlands (up to 6.2km) The foreshore track also starts at the Visitor Information Centre and follows picturesque Lake Mulwala to the Yarrawonga Yacht Club. You could follow the same path back to the visitor centre (4.2km), or you could continue on to the Chinaman’s Island Wetlands walk. The wetlands walk is a fauna and flora extravaganza and measures about 2km on its own. The two tracks combined is 6.2km return.
Yarrawonga Regional Park (3.5km) Starting at the downstream end of the Yarrawonga Holiday Park, this walking trail takes you into a typical red gum forest with its magnificent birdlife and statuesque trees which line the banks of the mighty Murray. Keep a lookout for one of the Koalas released here in 1995. In the park itself you will find a boat ramp, campsites, picnic tables, and a pit toilet. What’s On Summer 2020-21 25
Green Patch Loop (3.5km) Located inside the Yarrawonga Regional Park, this loop track is great for cyclists and walkers. It is a nature trail set out by Parks Victoria, following the river down through the red gum forest before looping back through the forest and returning to the bottom end of the river walk/cycle track. The loop itself is 3.5km and both tracks together is 6.7km in length.
Mulwala Foreshore Walk to Kyffins Reserve (2km) This walk starts at ‘Canoe Tree’ at the east end of the Owens Bridge Park in Mulwala. Take the time to look at the tree prior to beginning the walk as you will see an example of how the Aboriginal people made canoes for transportation by carving the canoe out of the living tree. The walk follows the lake foreshore in NSW as you exit Mulwala along the Corowa Rd and highlights the abundant wildlife in the area.

MASTERS GAMES In February each year, the population of Barellan swells with athletes and sports lovers from across the country. They flock to the Riverina town, 56km north of Narrandera on the Burley Griffin Way, for the Barellan Masters Games. With a motto that ‘‘it’s never too late to participate’’, the youngest competitors are 30 and there is no upper age limit. In 2020, an 86 year-old golfer got in on the action.
Proceeds from the $25 entry fee and additional sport levies are donated back in to the community, which has seen almost $100,000 invested since 2009. While you’re in Barellan, make sure to take a look around at some of the other great attractions.
It is always held in the last weekend of February, which in 2021 will be February 27 and 28. The games follow the tradition of the Australian Masters Games, which is also held in small communities across Australia.
There’s a notable emphasis on tennis here, given tennis great Evonne Goolagong-Cawley grew up and learned to play tennis in Barellan. The hitting wall where she practiced still remains, and the town is also home to the Big Tennis Racquet.
Sports played can vary from year to year, with Barellan intending to host nine different sports in 2021. They include golf, tennis, walking, basketball, six-a-side cricket, softball, lawn bowls, triathlon and netball.
The tennis theme continues at the Barellan Museum, were you may be able to purchase a signed Evonne Goolagong-Cawley tennis ball. The museum is also a treasure trove of artefacts and the history of Barellan and the surrounding district, with a number of memorable displays that take you on a journey that will keep the country spirit alive.
The games are designed specifically to cater for people of all fitness levels and ages, and handicaps come in to play for particular events as required. Much like an Olympics or Commonwealth Games, there are presentations for bronze, silver and gold medallists in each sport.

BURRAmine might seem an unassuming country town in Victoria, but is home to quite a special historic landmark. Byramine Homestead is significant for its association with explorer Hamilton Hume, who managed the property on behalf of his sister-in-law Elizabeth Hume.
Once you have finished exploring, take time to enjoy a bite to eat. The light lunch and Devonshire tea options change with the seasons.
Their association with the property began just a few years after her husband John Kennedy Hume was murdered by bushrangers near Gunning, NSW in 1840, with the homestead thought to have been built in 1842.
Popular choices include the Ploughman’s Platter or vegetable slice, or succumb to the decadence of the chocolate fudge cake.
In more recent years, the homestead was excised from the pastoral property and runs as a functions venue and tourist attraction. The homestead was classified by the National Trust because of its unique design, featuring octagonal rooms. The central room, known as the fortress room, allowed a clear view from all angles in case of attack. A beautiful garden was established around the homestead, and the Elm trees planted by Elizabeth there are the oldest in Victoria.
Many of the dishes come with a side serve of the chutney made on site, which can also be sampled in the brewery. Lager, ales, and stouts all with their own unique flavours are made in the Byramine Brewery & Cider House, along with three ciders and an alcoholic ginger beer. There’s also a range of in-house boutique wines produced at Byramine. The homestead is located at 1436 Murray Valley Hwy, Byramine, located between Cobram and Yarrawonga. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. The cafe closes at 3pm.

Night time beauty
Want to enjoy the natural wonders Hay has to offer but also avoid the heat of a Riverina summer? It can be quite easy, because this region is just as beautiful at night as it is during the day. Hay is located in one of the flattest parts of this region — they don’t call them the Hay Plains for nothing — so it is renowned for its sunsets and stargazing opportunities. As the sun prepares to set, there are some great vantage points from which you can watch the summer skies transform with shades of yellow, red, pink, mauve and blue. Combined with the contrasting aspects of light and shadow, it provides wonderful photographic opportunities. Hay has its own unique Sunset Viewing Area which is located 16km north of Hay, on the Cobb Highway toward Booligal. If this popular spot is full on the night you go along, you can pull up anywhere along the Cobb Highway
between Hay and Wanganella to take advantage of the views. Just make sure you’ve stopped in a safe

Sandy, shady spot Majestic river red gums tower over the white beaches at Hay’s Sandy Point, making it the ideal sport to relax on a hot summer’s day. Just one of the region’s recreational areas, it’s a great place to take a swim in the Murrumbidgee River, put in a boat or throw in a fishing line. There is a sandy beach with a safe family swimming area, and the shade of those majestic red gums are a great place to enjoy a picnic or to dry off after a swim. What’s On Summer 2020-21 31
Bring along a picnic rug and set yourself up on the sand, or take advantage of the picnic table shelters. Complimentary barbecues are also provided so you can cook up a feast for friends and family. There are two entries to Sandy Point — one via Brunker St adjacent the Hay skate park and another at the western end of Water St.

Plenty TO SEE in FINLEY The Finley district is renowned for its eateries, and there’s plenty of shops which can easily turn your quick shopping trip into an expedition lasting a few hours. Finley is uniquely situated as an interstate link at the junction of the busy Newell and Riverina Highways. It is in the perfect location to escape the busy bustle at the NSW and Victorian border, but close enough for a day trip to the Tocumwal beaches. Finley is an integral part of the famed Riverina food bowl. The district hosts a diverse range of cropping and agricultural enterprises, while a man-made lake offers a stop-over for barbecues, picnics, sailing, water skiing and fishing. Finley is also renowned for its sporting and leisure facilities, with a well rated golf course, bowling club, squash courts, grassed playing fields and three licensed clubs. Visitors to Finley can explore items from the past that tell the story of its rich farming heritage to a modern day world. The incredibly well preserved Finley Railway Station is one of the few pioneer stations still standing, and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the on site railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s. The museum is located in Endeavour St, Finley. To pre-arrange a tour, call (03) 5883 1543.
The story of Finley is also told in a series of large scale murals, all accessible by an easily walkable art trail.
The wall of Boomerang Motors facing Railway Park
The two biggest murals are located at the corner of Riverina and Newell Highways at the Finley Bowling Club.
including start times, visit www.finley.org.au.
Continue along the Riverina Highway and take a left into Coree St to see the next illustration, which is at St Joseph’s Primary School. Further along Coree St you will come across Pinnuck St, and after taking a left you will find the Tuppal Hotel at the Murray St intersection. The large ram mural is the first sight that will greet you at this hotel, and inside you’ll find some more artistic surprises. When you’re done inspecting the art at the Tuppal, head north along Murray St to Finley Quality Meats where you will find an artistic rendition of the businesses log as a mural. Cross the road and head to the laneway located to the right of the Finley Pharmacy where you will find yet another well-presented mural featuring a Finley streetscape. Continue past the laneway mural until you reach Endeavour St, and after turning right you will come across the last of the murals created so far. What’s On Summer 2020-21 33

Manufacturing history explored More than 120 years of one local family’s innovations can be found in one Southern Riverina location — the Finley Foundry Museum. The museum, which opened in October 2019, is a celebration of the long association local business JT & EN Close has had with the district community. The exhibit has been developed from family archives, foundry equipment and products, some of which have remained on site since the very early days of the foundry’s operations. Display items include a wagon and sulky manufactured at the foundry, wagon wheel parts, moulds and a patented One Way Disc. The equipment used to forge the items are also on show, as well as the furnace and belt driven machinery such as drills, bandsaws and other historical items dating back more than 127 years. The museum is dedicated to the original founder and owner JT Close, for the work he did establishing the business and the impact he had on the district. It has been established by his great grandson Graeme Close, who still operates the foundry under the name JT & EN Close Engineering and Steel Fabrication. John Thomas Close’s Foundry was the main source of employment in
the town in the early 1900s, after initially opening in 1893. Quite a large number of men, mainly tradesmen, were permanently employed there. The business kept growing and JT’s business interests expanded into grain and fodder stores and saddlery and harness making, while he continued with manufacturing farm implements, wagons, drays, sulkies, watercarts, spike rollers and oneway discs. There was a special paint room for painting, varnishing and drying jinkers, an area for painting and drying the wagons (all by hand), a moulding room for disc bearing, water cart ends, spike roller sections, a furnace for melting the cast and a special section for cutting and fitting the steel tyres to the table top wagons, carts and jinkers. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, oxyacetylene and arc welding began to replace the old methods of joining metal. This was the beginning of the end for forges, and meant further changes in equipment and techniques had to be accepted by the business.
During the 1930s the irrigation scheme began and JT made changes in his foundry to manufacture different implements needed for grading and construction of ditches for irrigation layouts. He also launched multiple building projects to house all of his additional workers, and was contracted to build Finley’s Roman Catholic Church, the School of Arts, the Masonic Temple, Presbyterian Church and the Bush Nursing Hospital.
Today the business designs and manufactures cement moulds, aluminium screw lift doors and slides for irrigation, sheep and cattle feeders and making trays and canopies for work and leisure utilities, as well as repairs and general day to day manufacturing. The museum is located at 4852 Wollamai Street, Finley and is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and at other times by appointment. Entry is free to the public.

NED KELLY TRAIL The town of Jerilderie is best known as the site of one of the most infamous and daring raids of bushranger Ned Kelly. Ned, his brother Dan and their friends Steve Hart and Joe Bryce arrived in Jerilderie on Saturday February 8, 1879, where they captured two local policemen and locked them in their own cells.
Ned handed over the written account of his life actions to Edward Living, the bank teller, who promised to pass it on to Gill, a promise he never kept.
On February 10, 1879 Kelly and his Gang stole £2140 from the Bank of NSW and destroyed a number of mortgage documents.
The letter didn’t become public until 100 years after the Jerilderie holdup.
The wires to the telegraph office were cut to stop news of the Kelly Gang’s actions being transmitted. The original post and telegraph office remains largely unchanged in its Powell St location. It is believed that the true purpose of the Gang’s visit to Jerilderie was to have printed Ned’s side of the story that led he and his Gang along the path of outlawry. Samuel Gill, editor of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette was, by this time, aware of the Gang’s presence in Jerilderie and had left on foot for Carrah Homestead from where information could be sent on to the Deniliquin police.
The Printing Office of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette has been restored by Murrumbidgee Council, and houses The Bolt Exhibition — an exhibition of convicts and bushrangers. Ned’s original missive, known as The Jerilderie Letter, is held at the State Library of Victoria. Murrumbidgee Council is a member of the Ned Kelly Touring Route, which explores the legend of Ned Kelly through the historical sites of Melbourne, North East Victoria and Southern New South Wales. Further information on the Ned Kelly Touring Route can be found at www.nedkellytouringroute.com.au. What’s On Summer 2020-21 39

After leaving Jerilderie (a keystone in the Ned Kelly story), the Kidman Way heads north through the productive farming town of Coleambally, past the largest solar farm in Australia and onto Darlington Point on the Murrumbidgee River; learn about the history of the punt and bridge.
Bird Trails of the Riverina Collectively The Rock Reserve, Galore Hill, Brookong State Forest, Mundawaddery Travelling Stock Reserve & Cemetery, Milbrulong School Forest, Tootool Wetlands and Pleasant Hills are recognised as Bird Trails of the Riverina. What’s On Summer 2020-21 41
