8 | DON MAGAZINE Shane Sali might be the new mayor of Greater Shepparton, but he says the top job isn’t going to stop him from keeping it “as real as possible”.
“I need to keep things as simple as possible so I can maintain my commitment to community, commitment to our businesses and, most importantly, commitment to my family,” the 34-year-old said. Family, community and footy — which he plays for Shepparton United Football Club — are the three priorities Shane learned growing up in Shepparton. Now he and his wife Lirie are raising their two young boys, Jacob and Lachlan, and baby daughter Chelsea, in the town he loves. Football is an integral part of Shane’s life, and his boys have inherited his passion for Shepparton United.“Iget so much enjoyment of going to a game on Saturday and playing and having my sons come and chat to me at the quarter-time breaks and half-time breaks and when we’re running around, doing our warm-up pre-game, they get amongst it,” he said. >>

“I’m playing sport for myself but I’m also doing it to ensure that my kids are involved in seeing their father active as well.”Everyone thought he would give up footy when he was elected mayor, but Shane says the game keeps him grounded — literally, sometimes.
“Local government can have a big impact on facilitating residential and industrial land growth and commercial land“Onegrowth.thing that we can do is work as hard and as efficiently as we possibly can to ensure there is enough availability for us to grow our residential land, which then provides opportunities to entice people to come here because we’ve got job opportunities.”Aswellashis mayoral duties, Shane is operation manager at his family’s three Shepparton businesses — Shop 221, Traffik and Arcade Fashions. He juggles between his two professions with ease and grace, even if he has to give more of his time to the community at the moment.“Myphysical presence in our businesses has taken a step back,” he said.
“It gives me the sanity, you know, three times a week — throughout the whole year — to be connected to a group of people that aren’t interested necessarily in local government or business.” Like any team player, Shane says the most important part of his job as mayor is to bring key members of the community together to solve the issues facing Greater Shepparton.“I’mnotgoing to pretend that I know everything because I don’t, but what I do know is how to bring people together, that have skill sets to work with each other to achieve good outcomes in our commu nity,” he “Councilsaid.don’t have to do everything. Just connect the right people with each other and they will get things done for us. “We just facilitate that, that’s my role — council just need to be there to facili tate good outcomes. “I need to be able to deliver on that and set things up so I can go and advocate for the important things that matter for our region.”Onthe issues that Greater Shepparton City Council does have significant control over, like the housing crisis, is where his “keep it real” mentality will come to the fore.“We need to open up land and fast track that development as much as we possibly“Therecan.are many pieces to the puzzle, and council is arguably the biggest piece.

“Plus my parents are still active within the businesses.“Almost three months in it’s working well. I’m still across everything, just a lot more phone calls and email.

As long as you do that effectively, the rest of the show will keep moving as well. Are you keeping all the balls in the air when it comes to juggling your life? TYLER MAHER is finding it a challenge, but at least he’s managing to keep those balls from all crashing to the ground at once.
In a digital age where the world never sleeps, how can we balance work, family, relationships and health both mental and physical and somehow not spontaneously combust in theIfprocess?youfind the answer, please let me know. But in all seriousness, there is an expec tation in these modern times that we can keep all of the juggling balls of life in the air at one time. I wouldn’t say it is impossible to do so, but it is certainly impossible to do so for any extended period of time. I’m not exactly the shining light when it comes to the balancing act of life. I work in an industry that never stops and have two children that don’t either. My gym membership pings out of my bank account like a faraway dot on a submarine radar, shouting all it can at me in the seconds of attention it garners from the notification until the dial turns once more.Mostofmy family live on the other side of the country and I don’t call them nearly enough although they do hear plenty about my fantasy sport teams. And my wife I’m still gleefully getting used to that term Grace and I have as many date nights as hens have teeth. But what I have learned over the jour ney is that, rather than looking at juggling as the act of keeping all of the balls in the air, you have to see it for what it really is. It really is the act of not letting any ball hit the Thinkground.about it. Picture yourself juggling. Yes, at some points, all of the balls might be in the air. But never are they all at the apex of their curve in fact, half of the time they land safely in yourYouhands.haveto apply that logic to all of the tasks of life.
Sometimes, you’ll be fielding a work call with one hand, feeding the dog with the other and all the while watching your toddler try and climb onto the couch just so they can hurl themselves back off it in other words, all of the balls are in the air.But on other occasions, like when your children are safely tucked into bed and you and your spouse are relaxing on the couch binge-watching your latest favourite show, it might just feel like the momentum of a few of those juggling balls has slowed to a near-stop. To cut through the waffle, it can some times be as simple as this dedicate most of your focus to the aspect of your day that most needs it at any one time and remember to rotate accordingly.

When we decided to develop part of our property (The Lemon Tree Stud), where we have lived for 43 years, we quickly realised undertaking a residential development was going to be daunting and certainly overwhelming. Due to those negatives, we came to the conclusion we were out of our depth and needed assistance, so we approached Development Edge’s Peter Mintern and Michael Lewis to undertake the subdivision totally themselves. They were in the process of developing Seven Creeks Estate which adjoined our property. With their extensive expertise, networks, knowledge and experience we were able to structure a contract of sale that resulted in the development of our land. From our first meeting with Peter and Michael we both felt instantly comfortable with them undertaking this project. We were impressed with their open communication, attention to detail and professionalism. When Development Edge became involved, the project was expedited and all the blocks sold extremely quickly. They took care of everything. We couldn’t be happier as we would not have achieved the final positive outcome ourselves. We are extremely proud of the finished product, Sevens View in the Seven Creek Estate.

Eildon has plenty of accommodation options, including some great campgrounds.
The Jerusalem Creek Campground lies on the southern edge of Lake Eildon. It’s the perfect place to swim or launch a canoe, kayak or boat from the nearby boat ramp. If you’re an avid angler, both rainbow and brown trout are plentiful throughout the lake system and the occasional Murray cod can be seen jumping from the water. Jerusalem Creek is for tents only, so is suited for a seasoned camper, but offers a more serene and peaceful experience.
If you’re looking to go camping and fishing, head one-and-a-half hours south of Shepparton for a weekend at Lake Eildon. The Murray cod population is booming right now, and monsters larger than 110 cm are being caught every week. But be quick — cod season closes on August 31 and the iconic fish will be off limits until December 1. But there’s also a lot of big, fat trout choking the waterways of Victoria’s largest freshwater lake.

Men living in regional or rural areas of Australia have a 24 per cent higher rate of dying from prostate cancer than their urban counterparts.
“There was a delay in men presenting to their GPs for screening due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” GV Health prostate cancer specialist nurse Sonia Strachan said. “This in turn delayed further investigations required to confirm a diagnosis.
“Men with no family history and no symptoms should discuss their risks with a GP and consider testing at least from the age of “Men50.need to be having regular health checks every year. And part of that is having a discussion with their GP about prostate cancer awareness, and PSA testing.”Thecurrent screening guidelines recommend discussing your prostate cancer risk with your GP and if you wish to screen, undergo a PSA test every two years from age 50, or, if you have a family history of

prostate cancer, consider testing every two years from the age of 40.
22 | DON MAGAZINE W ith the increase of men presenting with advanced prostate cancer at Goulburn Valley Health, front line healthcare providers are urging men to make their health a priority.
“It’s very important that we detect prostate cancer before it spreads outside the prostate to other areas of the body, which makes the cancer much harder to manage and treat over the long term.”
“We’re already seeing an increase in men presenting with advanced disease rather than localised disease.” If prostate cancer is caught earlier while it is localised within the prostate, men have a much higher chance of survival.“Currently, men diagnosed with prostate cancer have a 95 per cent chance of surviving five years, however, this chance lessens the later the cancer is diagnosed,” Sonia said.
There are a range of factors that account for the difference, with evidence to suggest the distance to treatment can be a major barrier.“It’svital for men with a family history of prostate cancer to talk to their GP about PSA testing from an earlier age, starting at around 40,” Sonia said.
Sonia said a regular health check screens for more than just cancer, it checks for all the major health risks.
Don’t put off until tomorrow what you should do today when it comes to an important men’s health check.
“I want to see men encourage one another to have all health checks.
GV Health prostate cancer specialist nurse Sonia Strachan says if caught early, prostate cancer is less likely to impact men’s health in the long term.

1: Speak to a fitness professional
4: Have fun! Believe it or not, you can have fun and get fit at the same time! Work out with a mate, listen to music that pumps you up, play sports, or even attend a fun group fitness class. If you enjoy what you’re doing it won’t get boring and you will keep turning up!
Five tips to start your fitness journey with Joe and Scotty from Aquamoves
There will be times where even the best plans don’t pan out. Work gets busy, family commitments pop up and you’re not able to exercise as often as you like. This is absolutely normal and the key is not to quit completely. You might find small moments during the day to be more active until you are able to return to your regular fitness schedule. Some exercise is always better than no exercise. SOME exercise is always better than NO exercise.
3: Add strength training to your lifestyle
These people are trained to motivate you, give you exercises specific to your needs and help keep you accountable. Fitness professionals can work with you to make a plan that fits your lifestyle and help set goals to keep you pushing ahead. A chat with a fitness professional could change your life.
Walking is great, but strength training is vital for every day fitness as well. Strength training improves the body’s muscular strength and tone, which helps protect joints from injury. It also increases flexibility and improves balance. You don’t have to lift huge weights to get these results! Start easy with help from a fitness professional and you will soon experience the benefits.

It is easy to underestimate the value of a good dad when you have one. I recently lost mine. Parkinson’s weakened him and then the flu took him from us, but before then he had 83 years to influence this earth to the better. We were lucky, for he was a thoroughly good man.I’mone of the projects he worked on, but never quite finished.
MURRAY SILBY says he was lucky to have a special dad to show him how to be a good dad to his own
Having lived through a period of transformational change in the world, my dad was a little bit old school and a little bit new school. Any man can be a father, but it takes something special to be a dad.
As a journalist, you come across plenty of examples of bad dads, the news is full of them, so sometimes the good ones fly under the radar. But when you lose them, it brings into sharp focus all the great lessons, laughter and love they gave you.

A young Murray Silby being helped by his dad Gil to feed a seal back in the 1970s.
Some say Dad and I looked alike — he was lucky like that.
As a dad, it is sometimes difficult to know whether you should be striving for peace or victory.
As we rush from commitment to commitment, work and social, shopping and gardening, I try to ask myself, “Did the boys and I wrestle today?”.
I do not claim that I was good at being a stay-at-home dad, and my dad would probably have done it better, had his evolution continued on the trajectory it was on, but I loved it and would not hesitate to do it all again.

over a wood fire in 40-degree heat all while a man told me I had it too good and that I should not vote.
It does not matter if you earn the most money, are able to build a gazebo onto the back of the house or even if your billy cart rolls your kids just want to be loved, hugged and for you to chase them around the house or yard before they then wrestle you to the ground like a wildebeest being taken down by a pride of lions during migration.I’mloath to give advice because I am sure I am no better than any other dad I am just muddling through but given I have been asked to put some thoughts down, there is a lesson I try to live by as a father, stay-at-home or not.
My dad’s life and death has taught me, an aspiring good dad, something key to my role, and my time as a stay-at-home dad reinforced this.
The lessons I learned from my dad, that I noted most of all, were to help people if you can, work hard, enjoy life and be positive.Theyare hard to fault. I might also add, in this time we live, that as the father of boys, I have a role in helping them to also become thoroughly good men.
There were days when I begged a child to sleep during the day, simply so I could.
After all, when a child himself, his dad worked the paddocks with a horse-drawn plough, and by the time my dad died, space tourism was within sight and selfpropelled tractors guided by GPS did the tilling.Hestarted out with the view that a woman’s place was in the home, and finished up carrying the greater share of the washing up and ironing for my mum, who found it hard to stand. Much of my dad’s evolution can be put down to extensive efforts to re-train him by my mum, who was a working mother untilThankfullyretirement.for my wife, I am almost perfectly trained.
There were days when my wife walked in the door from work and I handed her one, or multiple, children as soon as she stepped inside, and then promptly left the house not to be seen for a few hours.
And, there were days, blissful days, when we got a cleaner-come-babysitter in.
No doubt my sons will value some of my methods and eschew others, like I did my dad’s, but that is fine too.
My dad was a hands-on type of dad. He was involved in the discipline, read us books and gave us ‘elephant rides’ on his back. He took us up the paddock on the tractor, to sport, attended school events, and it was a rite of passage when his sons could wrestle him to the ground. His culinary skills were slower to advance, with his repertoire almost entirely limited to fried sausages and eggs. Although, again later in life, he did try to ease the burden on my mum a lot more in this field as well, expanding to include vegetables.ItookDad’s evolution as a father from old school to new school to another stage, though, by becoming a stay-at-home dad when our boys were young. It was not a difficult decision at the time as I had reached a professional plateau, my wife earned more than me and, fortunately, that was enough for us to choose that path. I had no problem with the concept and nor did my wife, but I was not ready for the workload and the fatigue, and perhaps, the irony of sometimes feeling my work was undervalued or under-appreciated.
We have a problem in society with some of our men and their treatment of women and vulnerable minority groups. We all need to continue to change our society for the better and I need to play my role.
Being a stay-at-home dad taught me a new appreciation for the role women have played in our society for thousands of years, and I did not have to do it in a long dress with multiple petticoats or slaving
Now a father myself, like every father’s son, I’m borrowing a bit from my dad and working in my own theories to the mix. After all, there was much we disagreed upon, although he always let us air our views. It’sone of the great lessons he taught me, that my opinion was valued. We did not have to agree, but we had to be fair and respectful to all, and there’s always more to learn.
There were days when we bickered over whether I was achieving my KPIs or not.

Heart disease can occur when there are abnormalities of the blood vessels, pump chambers or electrical system of the heart. While most people are aware of the term ‘heart attack’, there is often some confusion over the di erent terms used to describe heartedisease.mostimportant heart conditions to be aware of are:
• Fresh fruits and vegetables.

When this happens, the heart muscle supplied by that artery is starved of oxygen – which leads to damage and formation of scar tissue. Symptoms of a heart attack can include pain in the chest, jaw, shoulders, back or arms, chest tightness or burning, breathlessness, sweating or nausea.
• Heart failure: Occurs when the heart muscle is weakened or sti ened, leading to problems supplying the body with enough blood and vital oxygen. ere are many causes of heart failure, including heart attacks, problems with the heart muscle or valves, and high blood pressure.

Looking after your heart health
• Atrial brillation: Is an irregular rhythm of the heart, coming from the upper chambers (atria). is abnormal rhythm can cause a racing heartbeat and shortness of breath but can sometimes occur without any symptoms. e rhythm leads to the top chambers of the heart quivering and can lead to clot formation and strokes.
Around 1.2 million people (6.2 per cent of the adult population) suffer from one or more heart or vascular conditions in Australia. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, cardiovascular disease is the cause of 27 per cent of deaths in Australia. While his paintings hold a signature look with prominent line work and mastery, Tom began as a portrait artist with a focus on realism and abstract styles, although always putting “an Indigenous lens across somewhere”.

Along with the title, he also gained his start as an artist. “People say the journey has been rapid or meteoric but I’ve been doing this for well, I’m 41 years old now, so I’ve pursued it in some way, shape or form for a long time,” Tom said.

Kie Markey is the owner of Black Crown Tattoo in Shepparton, where he creates masterpieces on living canvases. Kie specialises in black and grey realism, and exclusively larger pieces. Since he started tattooing, he’s seen a lot more young people willing to sit under the needle for up to six hours on end.Not doing a tattoo under A4 size, Kie sees mainly male clients who are interested in his iconic animal and face-portrait pieces. “I say no to people two or three times a week,” he said. Black Crown Tattoo doesn’t do walkins, so Kie hasn’t had to say no to a client who’s had a few drinks and made an impulse decision. “I only tattoo my own designs on people. So, if it’s not an idea that I’m going to get creative with, and I can’t do it justice, then I won’t do it.” Clients who want to get inked at Black Crown Tattoo by Kie or the other full-time artist, Bree, need to book an appointment via email. Like most service businesses in Shepparton, Black Crown Tattoo had to close during the COVID-19 lock downs, leaving the tattoo artists with a two-year backlog of appointments that they only caught up with six months ago.Now Kie’s flat out again, booked three months in advance. When a client reaches out to Black Crown Tattoo, the artists usually ask them to have a look online for a style that they’re passionate about to start them in the right direction of the design they want. “I feel like a lot of people have a picture in their head, and it’s not (always) going to be like that,” Kie said.“A tattoo might have to be a certain size, otherwise the lines will run together, and an experienced artist will be able to make sure that the best quality tattoo is inked into your skin forever. “You’ve just got to trust the artist, because you’ve picked them because you like their work.” You can book an Tattoowith a BlackappointmentCrownartistvia: crowntattoo@gmail.comblack Find out more online at: @blackcrowntattoo@blackcrowntattooaucom.auwww.blackcrowntattoo.orvisitFacebook:orInstagram: Tattoos are a work of art and skin a blank canvas for a Shepparton tattooist who has a three-month waiting list for his stunning designs.

“This is a good option to rebuild the pelvic floor strength and increase blood flow, to stop the dribbling that you get after you have your prostate removed.

In 30 minutes, EMSELLA can induce more than 11,000 contrac tions resulting in pelvic muscle strengthening, helping reduce or eliminate incontinence in both men and woman, but also improving their intimate health.

The HIFEM treatment is delivered by an EMSELLA, which is basically a chair with a magnet in it. The electromagnetic energy is channelled through the EMSELLA chair and stimulates the pelvic muscles to produce contractions doing kegel exercises. However, EMSELLA bypasses the nervous system to contract harder and faster than you can by yourself which greatly speeds up the restoration of the pelvic floor.
Prostate removal can have an ongoing impact on a man’s life.
HIFEM can help with erectile dysfunction, if it is pelvic floor-related.“Bystrengthening the pelvic floor and increasing blood flow to those areas, it can benefit people with erectile dysfunction,” Monique said.“A lot of people joke about erectile dysfunction, but it’s actually quite a debilitating issue physically and emotionally for men “If there’s a way to fix it, that’s non-invasive and not using medica tion that has its own side effects of drugs like Viagra.

“Because there’s a difference between knowing and living. That’s called knowl edge and wisdom.”
And for the past six years, James has spoken to the groups of warrior men at the end of their 13 weeks with Talking Straight. Many of the participants in Talking Straight confess they probably would have taken their own lives without the support of their fellow warriors.
“My daughters were right in front of me, there’s my wife, I had an amazing family, my life was amazing and yet my perception was everything I did brought pain to those I loved, and I couldn’t step a foot right.
“I had to go. It’s the only thing I could do.” Then he remembered something his father, who was a veteran of the Vietnam War, had told him when he was growing up on a farm near Seymour.
Six years ago, through pure chance, Dale and Sidie came across James’s work, and after reaching out have become fastfriends in their shared purpose to save men from suicide.
“One day, feeding a bunch of Angus on the back of a ute, and Dad’s looking off into the bush he said, ‘there’s my god’,” James said.

“The shame and the guilt that I felt just pressed down so heavily on me.” But his training as a major in the Army had taught him to internalise the trauma he had experienced, with the stoic silence of a soldier.
“Now the day I nearly took my own life, I remembered that story and I realised my journey isn’t done yet.” After reaching the lowest point a man can experience, the veteran now trains men to be warriors not the old-school stoicism, but to understand real mascu linity and build personal and family resilience.
“That’s actually what has drawn more and more people to me is because I don’t mind being open any more.”
“Helping people simply understand themselves and then have the courage to actually live it.

When you see a gorgeous old car rumbling past on a Sunday, does it inspire fantasies of starting your own project and building your own dream car?
You might also run into a beauty by pure coincidence while driving.

Once you’ve got your car, you need to decide how far you want to go, and how much time and money you’re willing to invest in your project.

But your time is money, so sometimes it’s better to pay a little bit extra at the wreckers and have them take it off for you.
Restoring old cars is an art, and Cam Scorey has a few tips for you.

Cam can give a new life to old four-wheeled marvels.
This beautiful old lady needs a bit of TLC to stay in a mint condition. Holden that was a six cylinder, and you want a V8, well you can go and buy a brand new V8 (engine) and drop it off to the mechanic and go ‘right, make this work’,” Cam said. ‘After market’ basically means that it’s not installed at the factory. Checking the back of car magazines, Facebook groups and online trading posts are a great places to start looking for after market parts. “If you’ve gone and bought an XY Falcon there’ll be a Facebook group for XY Falcon owners in Victoria, Australia. And you can join in there and you can post off and go ‘hey, guys, just looking for an engine builder, who can people recommend?’,” Cam said. But by far the best place to find parts for your project car is at swap meets or theSwapwreckers.meets can have rare and hard-tofind parts, and are a great research trip to see what’s available for your project car. And at the wreckers, the car may be written off, but the parts you’re looking for may still be intact. It’s a great place to get your parts cheap — if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty. “There’s been a write-off, or something happened and the insurance company just dumps it with them,” Cam said. “They can say, ‘brand new that part could be $190, but if you come out here and take it off yourself you can have it for $80’. (The wreckers) aren’t $100 invested into the part, so they don’t have to put 30 per cent on top of that.”
“You might say ‘hey, I need I need a lefthand front door power window motor’,” Cam“Andsaid.then they’ll say, ‘look, it’s this much, or if we take it out for you, it’s an extra 30 “Sometimesbucks’. it’s just the time and money; brand new parts are $250 and they want $60 or an extra $35 to pull it out — $90 bucks is still cheaper.”

MINI-GOLF DAY
Let’s be honest, golf kinda sucks. It takes too long, it’s too outdoors and just a bit much. However, what if I told you that you could capture the fun bits of golf (putting, hanging out with friends) without the bad bits (walking, watching your ball fly 150 m in the wrong direction)? Well, do I have news for you! Besides, you can still dress up in awful pants and all turn up in a gaudy BMW at mini-golf.
What better way to seal your brotherly bond than waiting for the full moon, stripping to the waist, covering your torso in blood and howling at the moon as you hunt the creatures of the night?
KIDS’PARTYBIRTHDAY Re-capture the joy of being a small child for one more time before the groom is snatched away forever. Head to a Rebound or a Fun Planet, book the place out and everyone gets to be an eight-year-old for a day. You wanna play dodgeball? Play dodgeball. Spend an hour on the arcade? You got it, kid. Want to order plates of chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs? In the words of Bob the Builder: Yes. We. Can.
Maybe the hen party is a bit too out there and racy for you — perhaps your groom would be more suited to a garden party. Dress thyself in Victorian-era hats and coattails, whip out the monocles and spend the afternoon in the garden drinking tea, eating cucumber sandwiches and discussing the latest revolution in France. Then, you can put on your jackets with padded elbows and retire to the smoking room for a pipe of tobacco and a glass of cognac as you discuss the merits of Lord Pitt the Younger’s taxation proposals.
HOWL AT THE MOON
In an inclusive 21st-century world, the old ways of bucks’ parties are falling by the wayside. Here are some cool, new bucks’ parties ideas for you, your groomsmen and all the rest of your friends that everyone can enjoy — and you can even feel safe inviting your grandmother along, too!
BIRTHDAY
BOWLING Keep it simple! A night out with the lads and ladies at the bowling alley is a safe, fun activity for the whole family, and is good for younger children or teenagers who might not be ready for the full-on nature of a traditional bucks’ party or big night out. GOLF DAY Similar to bowling, a golf day — or golf weekend — could be a good way to escape from the realities of life, get out in the great outdoors and hang out with your mates.
BUCK THE TREND
Many butchers sell blood, and some will provide you with werewolf blood if you ask nicely and get them when it’s in stock. Vampires are often in season from September through to December, while dragons migrate during autumn and make good hunting. Be careful of their claws!
COMMUNE WITH THE DEAD A bucks’ party is a chance to let loose a little, and what could be looser than communing with The Other Side through a ouija board? Ask a spirit to play a prank on the best man or get a poltergeist to terrorise the boundtheAthethroughthegetMakemother-in-law-to-be.sureyoudon’ttooclose,lestoneofgroomsmenbesuckedthebreachandintorealmoftheundead.tripacrosstheRiverStyxnightbeforeaweddingistoendintears.
TEA PARTY
Bucks’ parties often raise expectations of wild nights out, blurring the line of legality, and risk finishing with you waking up in a trashed Las Vegas hotel room with a baby in the wardrobe and a tiger in the bedroom. But MAX STAINKAMPH says there is another way.
HEN PARTY
Here’s a modern twist if you still want something a bit saucy — you take the traditional hen party and just take the bridal party out and replace it with the groom’s gang. Leave everything else exactly the same — the prosecco, the charcuterie boards, the big human-sized cut-out of the groom, the scantily-clad male servers, the life drawing. This is fun and silly for when your groom is marrying another man, and even funnier and sillier if they’re straight. Lean into the absurdity!

The Stanhope group has expanded its role to include fundraising for worthy local projects and selling some of its projects to raise money for the shed. On the day Don called in, the very comfortable (and warm) kitchen was deserted and everyone was on the job, working the saws, drills and hand tools. “Wednesday is usually a busy day,” Des said.“Friday we tend to have a few around for coffee and tea.” Men’s Sheds developed as a meeting place for retired men who were wanting to
“It works well for both of us,” Des said. “They get rid of the waste and we get to use the timber.” They have racks of recovered timber in the shed yard, and they have even built a lock-up storage shed out of re-used packing material.
According to the Australian Men’s Shed Association: “Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. And, importantly, there is no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for.”

When you enter the building and see a forklift parked in the corner, you know this Men’s Shed means business. “We’re not really tinkerers,” founding member Des Crichton said about the Stanhope Men’s Shed. “Things happen here more on an industrialThscale.”emembers tend to be oriented towards projects, like the old grey Fergy tractor they are restoring, or the timber tables they are working on.
There are more than 1200 Men’s Sheds in towns and suburbs across Australia. Some are more serious than others, as GEOFF ADAMS discovered in the small dairy community of Stanhope.

Negotiating the highs and lows of fatherhood takes hard work and patience. And lots of love. Even for someone whose job it was to look after young people.
Ordinary things like taking his kids to their sporting commitments on the weekends, coaching their team, providing an inspirational half-time speech when the chips are down, and cheering them on no matter how far behind they are on the scoreboard.“There’salways going to be disappointments, but it’s how you manage that and how you get around it. If you can teach them that, they’ll be better off for it.” These simple everyday things galvanised his relationship with his sons, who know they can rely on him no matter what.
AND
No father is truly qualified, or prepared, for the job of raising sons. But Dale taught Tom, now 19, and Xavier, 16, the best way he knew how.
DON The moment Dale Janke’s eldest son Tom was born changed his life forever.
His eldest has left home, and his youngest isn’t far behind — but his boys know that the rock they could rely on to take them to footy on the weekend is always on the other end of the phone for the highs and the lows.
The Janke family (from left) Xavier, Dale, Helen and Tom.
“I remember the midwife picking up Tom,” Dale said. “He looked straight at me and I looked straight at him and the connection right there was just magical. “I felt nine feet tall and bulletproof and just felt very proud.” Dale used to be a youth worker, which would see him working all kinds of strange hours. But when he realised he was missing the best moments of his sons’ childhoods, he had to reassess what was best for his young family, eventually deciding to take a job as a landscape gardener at Notre Dame College in Shepparton. “I think when I was single, or without a family, I could give my work 100 per cent,” Dale said. SONS
“You do tend to think about it — am I doing enough as a dad, giving them the right upbringing, am I being a good role model?” he said. “Have I provided enough, have I been there enough for my children? “All you want for your sons is for them to grow up and be good men.”
FATHERS
Being a father is more than just being a provider for Dale — it’s being there for his children whenever they need him.
“But then along comes a family and you just sort of need to stop and sort of be at home and be focused at home rather than thinking about work while with family.”
