Education Future 2020 THE education sector has been an education in itself this year with coronavirus emptying every school in the country.

And with millions of schoolchildren being home schooled — albeit temporarily — the unprecedented challenges have also highlighted the schools that had the best systems in place, the most !exible staff and the most determination to ensure their students kept up. Coronavirus this year may have put an end to the traditional education week but many of those schools delivering education at the cutting edge have joined forces to present Education Future in the Riverine Herald. By embracing the technology that has kept our ‘home schoolers’ going,

it affords parents and students the opportunity to still ‘visit’ the schools they are considering. Schools where they can access scholarship opportunities, boarding options and assess the range of subjects and extra-curricular activities that are available to provide each student with a holistic approach to education, making them more rounded and better equipped citizens of the future. This can be done via virtual tours and online enrolments, courses and boarding choices. The schools participating in Education Future are schools which have been pioneering the future of their students for, in some cases, for more than 150 years. But others, newer, have had the advantage of their own assessment of the true needs of students circa 2020 and bring tailored programs

and facilities to the mix. The schools bringing you Education Future are St Catherine’s, St Joseph’s College Echuca, Bendigo TAFE Echuca, Assumption College, Scotch College, River City Christian College, Echuca College, Moama Public School, St Mary’s Primary School, Moama Anglican Grammar, Presbyterian Ladies College, St Patrick’s Primary School Tongala, Echuca East Primary School, Echuca Twin Rivers School, 208 Echuca Primary School and Echuca Specialist School. Each one of these institutions has an established reputation; many of them as independent schools but there are also the standout government schools providing a low-cost local option and the versatility to give every student the chance to excel and become the best they can be.

Even as Education Future is launched, Canberra and our State Governments are winding back the restrictions we have all been living with and across the twin towns and region students are beginning to go back to mainstream education in increasingly larger numbers. Provided this national — and international — easing of lockdowns succeeds schools, students and families will be able to resume something of a more routine life. But routine does not alter the fact that decisions parents and students make this year about which school, or schools, they are considering will have a much longer-term impact on their future. That is the essence of this feature, education is our future and the young students of today — your children — will need that education to better create their own futures.

St Catherine’s Boarders shine during online learning transition When it comes to education and learning, the current COVID-19 pandemic has challenged schools across the globe. St Catherine’s School in Toorak, Melbourne is no different. During this unprecedented time, the spirit of the School Community, its strength in diversity, and extensive planning has allowed the School to navigate relatively smoothly to their Learn@Home Program. Well supported by ICT staff, teachers undertook immense training to maximise the use of Microsoft Teams, and other portals placing students’ learning and wellbeing as the priority. “In my thirty years of working in education, and presented with no other alternative, I have never seen such dedication, commitment and willingness than from the St Catherine’s staff as they prepared for teaching in a new landscape,” says School Principal, Mrs Michelle Carroll. Stumbling blocks were minimised prior to the start of Term 2 as a result of forward planning. “The school has, over the last few years, invested heavily in developing online platforms that support delivery of the teaching and learning program. Teachers and students are displaying great creativity to ensure our highquality lessons are not compromised,” declares Mr Robert Marshall Deputy

Principal, Teaching and Learning. Sarah and Annabelle Green, sisters from Albury, have been boarding at Illawara, the School’s Boarding House since 2018. Their smooth transition to online learning has been combined with missing their friends. “The transition to online learning has been quite simple. The school had been prepping us with online learning weeks prior to isolation,” says Annabelle, Year 10. Sarah, completing Year 12 agrees. “I have found the transition to online learning very smooth. Microsoft teams was working efficiently so there weren’t that many problems when we started the term from home.” “The School is mindful of reducing screen time as much as possible. We have created a ‘no classes’ on Wednesday afternoons. Our senior girls take over and organise a range of wellbeing activities,” says Mr Marshall. “My friends and I have been adapting through online group chats and the School has implemented House activities that allow us to work together for a fun task,” says Annabelle. The School prides its self with being a caring School which caters to the individual emphasises Mr Marshall. “Our girls have shown

Annabelle Green

Sarah Green maturity, independence and a spirit of can do, embracing learning online with enthusiasm. Teachers are commenting that the Learn@Home process enables greater differentiation in the classroom.” Boarding at St Catherine’s is about developing independence, resilience and the confidence to try different things. Navigating COVID-19 has

certainly challenged our Boarders to do just that. Prospective students and families are invited to visit www.stcatherines.net.au for virtual tours of the School and Boarding House. Education Week

St. Joseph’s College Echuca looks to the future Brigidine Catholic Education at St. Joseph’s College continues to go from strength to strength, with students and sta bene!ting from the genuinely contemporary and challenging programs available. Catholic education has a rich tradition of educating the whole person: intellectually, spiritually, physically, and emotionally and an innovative and carefully planned curriculum is central to achieving this. At St. Joseph’s College the curriculum is designed to provide every student with opportunities that will help them discover their strengths, master new skills, and build strong self-esteem, con!dence and creativity. Specialised programs develop the capabilities that underpin "exible and analytical thinking and a capacity to work with others. Each student participates in a variety of courses and activities that are integral parts of our rich Catholic Brigidine tradition such as Religious Education classes, Social Justice activities, an ethics course at Year 12, prayer, liturgy and the study of scripture. Another key to student success is the strong tradition of working closely with families. St. Joseph’s College utilises the Parent Access Module (PAM) software, which gives parents real-time online access to their

child’s academic progress. PAM makes this relationship even closer and more successful. Everything from upcoming work, homework and assignments, to current results and even attendance is available to parents at the click of a button. The strength of this has been well and truly proven this term as our learning community responded in an outstandingly positive and resilient way to the sudden change to "exible and remote learning caused by the COVID — 19 crisis. Sta , students and parents made an amazing paradigm shift in a very short time frame, no doubt helped by their prior experience with systems such as PAM and the College Intranet SIMON. While St. Joseph’s College has over 900 students, there is a real sense of community. The vertical House structure gives students a place in a small community within the larger College community. Learning Mentors and House Leaders are constants in a student’s life during their time at the College. “Families choose St. Joseph’s College because they know we have the values based systems in place to care for their son or daughter, and educate them well in a community that is grounded in over 130 years of Brigidine Catholic tradition … a tradition that we are committed to continuing and enhancing!”

Assume Responsibility, Seek Unity, Restore Reason

Challenging students to be creative and critical thinkers who act with strength and kindliness in the Gospel tradition.

St. Joseph’s College has been serving the families of the Echuca-Moama region for over 130 years. We are a modern, gospel values based family-centred place of learning where: • Students acquire lifelong learning skills • There is an excellent Pastoral care program • A strong non-bullying culture exists • Each student has their own Apple Laptop • Students participate in a wide range of sports and extra-curricular activities • Our low ‘all inclusive’ annual fee gives families !nancial con!dence • Limited spaces at some year levels available for 2020

SUPPORTING STUDENTS TO SUCCEED Are you looking to reskill, upskill or start studying something you love? Bendigo TAFE’s Echuca campus offers a broad range of courses you can study locally with supported online, remote and practical training. Combined with our passionate teachers, strong community and industry partnerships, we are beside you every step of the way. Offering additional support from our Reconnect team and Indigenous Engagement and Capacity Building Officers to ensure you are bound to succeed.

Strong Community Partnerships Tegan Hartshorn is the Community Partnerships Co-ordinator at the campus and is passionate about delivering vocational training to all students. One of the things that Tegan loves most about the campus is its connection to local community. ‘It’s so great being able to help people to get the skills they need to work and give back to our local community.’ ‘We get a variety of students from young people reengaging back into education through our VCAL program, people starting their apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery as well as people kicking off their career in Early Childhood or Ageing Home Community. We regularly see students coming to us for a complete career change. It’s so rewarding watching

all of these people achieving their learning goals, whatever they may be.”

Passionate Teachers Our highly qualified educators like Matt Rolfe and Heather Jeffreys, bring a wealth of knowledge and commitment to seeing their students succeed. Helping students gain better outcomes is the real driver in why Matt loves teaching Learning Support and Preparation for Study. Matt’s passion for students being given the opportunity to develop their confidence and succeed in life, clearly shows. ‘They might be older people who haven’t been at school in a long time, or early school leavers who need help with their literacy and numeracy skills. I love seeing them slowly developing more confidence, and making friends.’

‘We work with local services including Reconnect and the Skills and Jobs Centre to support our students to take the next step to find meaningful work that they love’. Echuca local, Heather has been teaching VCAL at the campus since 2009. ‘Every year the students who come into our VCAL classes are very different. They are wonderful students who have struggled in the school system, then come across to our VCAL program and have just thrived. The parents are amazed and the students love it.’ ‘Our small class sizes mean that our students get the help that they need. We can see if a student is having a bit of trouble, and we can go and offer help. Then they get used to asking for help, and develop their confidence to ask us for help.’

Reconnect Program ‘Reconnect is a fantastic free service that can provide personalised support and course related financial assistance to people who haven’t completed Year 12 or equivalent. It really is brilliant’ says Farran Priest, a Reconnect Case Manager. ‘During my time as the Echuca Reconnect Case Manager, I have seen some great outcomes. These have included seeing long term disengaged clients completing courses and at times even moving on to work.’ ‘The Reconnect service really works with your own strengths and individual learning goals to help you successfully return to education and training. It is a completely personalised service and I encourage anyone who thinks they may need our support to be in touch.’ For more information call 1300 976 977 or visit bendigotafe.edu.au/Echuca

Assumption College enrolled its !rst boarding student in 1901. Since then, it has developed a unique boarding program committed to providing Catholic families living in remote and regional areas with an affordable and high quality opportunity for their children. Family spirit is a hallmark of Marist education and is truly evident in our coeducational boarding community. Living in a boarding community instils a strong bond amongst boarders. Each of the three houses is staffed by a resident head of house and an assistant who look after the pastoral needs of students. Unlike many other boarding schools, each house accommodates students from years 7 to 12, modelling the family spirit of which the Assumption College community is so proud, with boarders offered the chance to flourish in such a welcoming environment. An extension of the commitment to remote and regional families, and in addition to the traditional seven-day boarding program, Assumption College also offers a five-day academic boarding program for families eager to provide their son or daughter with an enhanced learning opportunity. The Academic Boarding Scholarship (ABS) program offers students the chance to board at the school five days a week, allowing them to take advantage of the additional tutoring and study support available to college boarders which can be tailored to the specific needs of each student.

We come together as a community valuing the uniqueness, gifts and personalities of all individuals. We encourage and promote respectful relationships between staff, students and parents. Our campus is an extensive and beautiful environment that offers students access to specialist facilities and plenty of space to play and enjoy themselves. The curriculum offered throughout primary is about the development of the whole child and includes creative subjects of Art and Music, Italian, Physical Development and sport for all children. At particular stages of Primary there are also special programs such as the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden in years 3 and 4 and specialist Science and Technology in years 5 and 6.
