A full range of food and refreshments is available throughout the site, at 10 locations.

• Refuse entry to any persons deemed to be intoxicated and/or disorderly or likely to cause a breach of the peace. • Remove persons causing disturbances, breaching the peace or refusing to comply with requests from the EFD. Persons entering the site must adhere to Occupational Health & Safety legislation.

Special care should be taken at all times to protect yourself and others against any loss or injury. Welcome President’s Report Well it’s that time again! Spring has sprung and it’s time to go to the best part of October (in my opinion!) the Elmore Field Days. Of course, I am a tad biased but all jokes aside our committee is very proud of the standing our event has within the agricultural fraternity. Like all the different agricultural sectors we service, we too feel the wrath of Mother Nature from time to time. In 2015 we were scorched and dusty and in a cruel twist the next Field Days (2016) we copped the wettest September on record and massive rains the weekend before our event. It tested the resolve of all our exhibitors, committee and patrons but we got through it, albeit ﬂat, and now we are back ready to put our best foot forward to showcase the tremendous agricultural industry that we are all part of. At the time of writing, the season has turned the corner locally and we are looking at a promising year ahead. This has reﬂected in our exhibitors returning in their

droves. The speed at which all the applications for sites this year came in was truly amazing. We have a great array of new models and machines lined up for this year along with our regular popular features such as our in-paddock demonstrations, sheep demonstrations, livestock exhibits, ag art and general interest areas as well as the over 700 static sites. Our committee is very conscious that our Field Days falls in the school holidays this year and that the mums and dads attending this year will have a few “apprentice” farmers in tow. While the next generation of future farmers love to look at all the great gear and services that mum and dad want, they also love to see some good old fashion kids’

entertainment. We have worked with local companies and exhibitors to source some great entertainment such as face painting, jumping castle and live entrainment for all. Of course, when us adults need time out we have the usual great array of food and drinks in the catering areas to recharge our batteries. The 16 local organisations that run the catering for us have worked incredibly hard this year to get the best range and quality of yummy food and drinks at the Field Days. Who knows, you may even be at the catering site that our guest entertainer Jemma Beech will be playing at, as she will be in attendance the three days. Finally, welcome to you all, have a great time and may your visit to our area and Field Days be enjoying and enlightening. Happy farming. A taste of yesteryear The Vintage Tractor Parade is one of the most popular events on the Elmore Field Days calendar. People of all ages enjoy checking out the old style machines that are still in working order. The Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex will have at least eight tractors on display at the three-day event. President Joe Chappel said one of the oldest was a HV McKay 5ft Harvester built in Sunshine in 1910. “It was pulled by four to six horses,” Mr Chappel said. “10 acres could be harvested in a good day.” There will three American built tractors, a 1924 John Deere D 15–27 spoker 15 drawbar HP with two speed transmission, a 1951 John Deere D 40 hp with three speed transmission and a 1935 McCormick Deering W30. Family-friendly agriculture event There will be fun for the whole family at the 54th annual Elmore Field Days, which falls in the school holiday period for the ﬁrst time in years. The annual three-day event begins on October 3, bringing together the best of agriculture in an inspiring, informative and demonstrationpacked event. More than 700 exhibitors will display their products and expertise at the Elmore Events Centre this year; including tools and hardware, pools, machinery plants, steel yards, cattle crushes and more. There will be plenty for the littlies too with jumping castles, face painting and entertainment by Quirky Tales performer Narelle Stone — ensuring children of all ages enjoy the day. Public relations officer John Giffin said with hundreds of exhibitors and the general interest pavilions, attendees would be spoilt for choice. “It’s basically a one-stop shop for all your farming needs. If we haven’t got an exhibitor there that has what you’re after, they’ll certainly know what direction to head you in,” he said. “It is really an event for the whole

family, there’s plenty of general interest and recreation exhibitors covering everything from ﬁshing and camping.” A wide range of machinery will be on show at the event, and in-paddock demonstrations give onlookers a chance to see the machines in action. “The big machinery is the key attraction for the bigger kids; you don’t have to be a little kid to enjoy hopping into the big machinery,” Mr Giffin said. The famed Ag Arts Wear competition will also return for another year, with crowds treated to a masterclass on turning everyday farm materials into intricate and incredible fashion with parades showing off the wonderful creations twice a day. Elmore Field Days will be held from October 3 to 5, from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, at the Elmore Events Centre at 48 Rosaia Rd, Elmore. Tickets are available at the gate priced at $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 years and over, with

Trial: Ewes for the Future Come and see how electronic ID technology ca n be used to captur e individual ﬂeec e information in the shearing shed

New trial 2015–2020

Ewes for the future — fertility, lambs and wool The new trial at the Elmore Field Days started in January 2015. The design is similar to the previous trial, but the breed groups are different. In this second trial three crossbred ewe types will be compared with

three Merino types. This trial emphasis is on ‘fertility’. The six breed types were each randomly selected from 3 properties, 14 ewe lambs per property, for a total of 252 ewe lambs.

The ewe lambs were joined to White Suffolk rams in late February 2015. The results on lambing percentage, lamb growth, wool and easy care characters will all be released as they progressively become available.

The most common prime lamb mother in the Elmore and northern districts.

MULTIMEAT X MERINO CROSS

Multimeats are a composite breed based on White Suffolk and Border Leicester genetics. They supply rams that are DNA tested to carry 2 copies of the Booroola fertility gene. These rams breed ﬁrst-cross ewes from Merinos. The ﬁrst-cross lambs carry one copy of the gene. Multimeat breeders claim these ewes consistently rear 30% more lambs than normal crossbreds.

CASHMORE-OAKLEA PERFORMANCE MATERNALS (COMPOSITES)

Cashmore-Oaklea Performance Maternals (Composites) have bred sheep from the following breeds: Coopworth, East Friesian, Finn, Border Leicester, Prime SAMM, Texel, Poll Dorset, White Suffolk, Merino, Corriedale, NZ Romney and Perendale. They have achieved a reputation for good lambing percentages, assisted by the hybrid vigour between the various breeds.

Avant garde fashion with a farming twist will again hit the runway at Elmore Field Days. Eye-catching outﬁts, designed and made from everyday materials, are set to create a stir in the ever popular Ag Art Wear competition. Lorraine Trewick, brainchild behind the competition and Elmore Field Days’ general interest chairperson, said the idea was to create a wearable outﬁt made from materials found on a farm. “It’s amazing what they come up with every year,” Mrs Trewick said. “It just blows you away.” Mrs Trewick said these unique garments are paraded down the catwalk and they never ceased to impress the audience. “The top designers are always looking for something innovative,” she said. “They use animal bones, a lot of different bail twines, tractor tyre tubes, parts of machinery like spark plugs, wire, dust masks and frost cloth. 16

“There was one competitor, one year she lacquered sheep manure and it just looked like beads.” Mrs Trewick said the competition was always hotly contested. “We have some very good designers and the standard keeps going up,” she said. “It has to be original, imaginative and easy to put on.

“If they have accessories, like shoes, jewellery and hats, they must also be made.” The creations are judged by a panel of three with points deducted for any commercially used materials. There are four sections: Avant Garde, Designer, 18 Years and Under and Hats — with the top six designs in each category qualifying as ﬁnalists. Parades will run twice a day, at 11 am and 2 pm in the auditorium, and the ﬁnalists will be announced on the Thursday at 2 pm.

Young talent live at Elmore After taking a shine to playing the guitar and singing at just three years of age, country music artist Jemma Beech has never looked back. The now 24-year-old is bringing her two decades of passion for music to Elmore Field Days. Ms Beech has been playing at gigs since she was 16 years old, but it will be the ﬁrst time she has appeared at the annual ﬁeld days and the NSW resident said she was excited about the opportunity. “I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s all about … and driving seven hours down the highway where there is fresh air and a country lifestyle,” she said.

For the ﬁrst time in years, the threeday event falls in the school holiday period — allowing more families to enjoy the array of fun on offer. Quirky Tales with Narelle Stone will be back due to popular demand. Ms Stone, who is a well-known amateur actress and is regarded as one of Victoria’s most popular librarians, will delight children with her animal story-time and plenty of audience involvement. “I tell a couple of stories to the 20

DIY=DIE when it comes to electrical work Two Victorian farmers have died after being electrocuted doing their own electrical maintenance work. In late 2015, a 75-year-old man was electrocuted while trying to ﬁx a submersible pump on a property at Moorabool near Geelong. In January 2016 a 21-year-old farmer from Yarroweyah in northern Victoria was electrocuted while attending to a pump in a drainage pit. These tragic, preventable deaths highlight the problem of farmers and rural workers performing electrical work they are not qualiﬁed to do. Doing your own electrical work is not only illegal — it can also be fatal. Electrical work must always be done by a licensed electrician. Energy Safe Victoria has launched a new campaign called DIY=DIE to urge farmers and rural workers to never perform their own electrical work. The message is simple: don’t die trying to be an electrician.

Energy Safe Victoria is aware that ﬁnancial pressures can mean many farmers work long hours or potentially cut corners with maintenance. We know that farmers are adept at a range of things but when it comes to electrical work it is just not worth the risk.

Farmers are being urged to call in a licensed electrician, no matter how remote the property or how simple the job appears to be.

WiSA’s automated irrigation systems make life easier For 21 years WiSA Irrigation Solutions has been making a difference for irrigators around the World with the WiSA irrigation system.

WiSA Irrigation Solutions will be at the 2017 Elmore Field Days.

The automated control system has helped to improve the operation and efficiency of all types of irrigation, including sprinkler, sub-surface, pipe and riser, border-check, pivot, lateral drip, micro-sprinkler systems and flood. WiSA’s automated irrigation system means irrigators have greater control and flexibility over their irrigation management. Real-time data is collected through soil moisture probes and other sensors and sent from WiSA field units back to a computer. Using the WiSA AquaLink software the information is collected then used to make essential decisions on how, when and how much to irrigate. Plus it all can be remotely controlled from any smartphone or tablet. What is rice bran? Rice bran is the outer layer of the grain removed by polishing brown rice to become white rice. It is a highly nutritious product, being a rich source of energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and ﬁbre. By comparison, rice hulls — the outer covering of the grain removed during the de-hulling process — contain a high level of ﬁbre and have limited feed value.

Research has proven that feeding additional energy in the form of fat increases the concentration of cholesterol, fat and progesterone in the blood. Rice bran also contains up to 15 per cent protein. The amino acid proﬁle of rice bran is well-balanced and compares favourably with other cereal bran.

A long history of fertiliser Eastern Spreaders Pty Ltd is celebrating its 28th year of distributing Marshall Multispread fertiliser spreaders through the eastern states of Australia. The Marshall Multispread was developed when the proprietor, Albert Freeman managed a gypsum mining company in 1981. That company had a fleet of imported spreaders which handled the ‘puggy’ gypsum quite well but were too small for Australian broadacre farming. During the spring and summer of 1981-82 the prototype Multispread was developed in consultation with Marshall and Roesner Pty Ltd from Western Australia and modified. It spread approximately 15 000 tonnes of gypsum in that first season. The Marshall Multispread went into full-scale production in 1982 and soon accounted for about 80 per cent of the belt-type spreader market. It was originally designed to spread heavy rates of gypsum, lime and organic material, but had the ability to handle fertiliser and seed at very light rates such as canola and lucerne seed as low as 4 kg/ha.

In November 1989 Albert and Joan Freeman began Eastern Spreaders which continues to market and service the Marshall throughout Eastern Australia. Demand for larger units has seen the range increased to include models up to 16 tonne (12.5 cubic metres) and has been developed to spread to up to 36 metres in urea and fertiliser.

Vertical Cutter/Mixer/Feeders in 2000 and is the Australian distributor for these very efficient and well received machines, both in dairy and feedlot situations.

A recent addition to Eastern Spreaders’ range of equipment is the Keltec Bale Slice which easily slices bales upwards from the bottom when loading into balefeeders or mixers and ﬁrmly holds and removes the wrap to avoid contamination of the feed. Eastern Spreaders will be located at Site 668 at The Elmore Field Days.

With the advent of GPS technology and precision farming a need arose for seeding and fertilising equipment to be compatible with Variable Rate Technology (VRT). During the past two years Matt Roesner has been developing the Marshall Door Control (MDC) unit which can be ﬁtted to existing Marshall spreaders. The MDC was released at Mallee Field Days in 2016 and has now been successfully used by clients from all around the country. The MDC can be retroﬁtted to Marshall spreaders and is controlled by an iPad which does not require

In-Paddock Demonstrations

Machinery on show The in-paddock demonstrations at Elmore Field Days will allow exhibitors to show off their machinery in action. Bringing together everything from tillage and haymaking equipment to spraying and sowing machinery, the day will provide visitors with insight into a variety of agricultural equipment.

The demonstrations will run throughout the three-day event, and senior vice-president and demonstration committee chairman Andrew Holmberg said they were a great way to show off the machinery.

“It gives the exhibitors the opportunity to display their wares in real-life situations where it is actually working out in the ﬁeld, more so than a static display,” he said. The overall event attracts a variety of patrons including prospective buyers, families with young children and people interested in learning more about the world of agriculture.

“People who live in towns aren’t so closely related to farming and they really just don’t see the modern equipment at work. They get to come and have a look and it really is an eye-opener, the machines are incredible,” Mr Holmberg said. The demonstrations will start each day from 11 am on the east side of Elmore Field Days site.

DeLaval to launch new milking system DeLaval has announced it will reveal a new rotary milking system designed speciﬁcally for grassland farming, at Elmore Field Days. “We’ve taken everything we know globally and distilled that into a system for farmers on a pasturebased production model,” DeLaval’s Oceania sales director Justin Thompson said. “We’re incredibly excited to reveal a system that meets the local needs of farmers who are milking two or three hours twice a day over a seasonal curve. “These are not farms with 20 000 cows milking around the clock like our customers in China and Europe. “What we’ve done is put the farmer in the middle of the picture. “Throughout this whole process, we have kept asking ourselves, what sort of system will measurably improve their animal welfare, farm

profitability, worker efficiency and milk quality?” This new system has been kept under wraps on a test farm, where a 500-cow herd was the first to put the system through its paces over the 2016–2017 season. “For us, cow comfort comes first and I’ve never seen animals so calm in a cowshed,” farm owner Jack Scheres said. “We’d never worked with DeLaval before. “We had always thought they imported their technology from Europe, so we’ve been pleasantly surprised to see this system developed in Oceania for our dairy conditions.”

DeLaval will launch a new milking system at Elmore Field Days. “It identiﬁes the cow as she comes in, it tells me milk production or milk loss, and it will automatically draft any cow based on parameters I set,” sharemilker Chap Zweirs said. “Any cowshed will do the basic job, so the inbuilt technology was the deciding factor for us to go ahead

Dig smart Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) is a not-for-proﬁt memberbased organisation that puts excavators planning to dig in contact with the owners of underground infrastructure. It is free for an excavator (digger) to lodge an inquiry. You can lodge an inquiry through the mobile-compatible website, www.1100.com.au or phone 1100 during business hours. You tell DBYD where you plan to dig and all the affected underground infrastructure owners will send their plans back to you by email. It is important to follow the instructions from all the asset owners to locate each asset.

Committed to the community

Colbinabbin’s Shane Ryan was one of many volunteers lending a hand at last year’s Elmore Field Days.

Elmore Field Days is determined to see the town of Elmore flourish. This commitment sees a portion of profits put straight back into the community through local organisations and grants. Elmore Field Days Committee president Derek Shotton said the event was important for the tightknit, small community. “Most of us are third, fourth or fifth generation community members and we want to make sure our town stays relevant and grows,” Mr Shotton said. “By doing our little bit I think we are a lot better off than other little towns.” Mr Shotton said there were multiple ways for community groups to raise all-important funds to help keep the town alive. He said each year 16 different organisations served up food at the three-day event. “We supply the facilities for them and they do the catering,” he said.

“All the proﬁts get split between the 16 organisations.” Volunteers are a key part of Elmore Field Days’ success, helping with parking, traffic control and other aspects of the day-to-day running of the event. Mr Shotton said these volunteers selected a local group they wanted to be recognised for their work. “We have a lot of volunteers who come out every day and some nominate a different organisation every day and others are passionate about a certain one,” he said. “At the end of each ﬁeld days and depending on the gate takings we work out an hourly rate which goes straight to the organisation.” Mr Shotton said a parcel pick-up system, run by a number of local groups, was introduced a couple of years ago.

“You pay $2 and the parcel pickup pick it up and take it to the nominated car park,” he said. “The organisations keep the $2 charge.” Throughout the year the Elmore Field Days Committee also funds important community programs such as ﬁre trucks, sporting

facilities and a road safety program through the secondary school. “One of the ﬁrst things we put money towards was a humidicrib for the Elmore Hospital,” he said. “Anything we can see giving a meaningful beneﬁt to our community, we support.”

Life in Wesley College’s Learning in Residence boarding community From her remote hometown of Finley in country NSW, Year 10 student and aspiring athlete Leia Varley made the move to Melbourne to become a full-time boarder at Wesley’s Learning in Residence last year. The New Holland portable tablet interface enables the user to start the machine and send it on its task autonomously.

A series of products from New Holland’s extensive line-up will be on display at this year’s Elmore Field Days. Showcasing several key features, the brand will highlight its focus on product evolution and customer satisfaction. Of considerable interest will be New Holland’s NH Drive concept autonomous tractor, a driverless machine, which can perform a wide range of farming tasks day and night. The Australian market is well known for its early adoption of innovation so at this year’s field days attendees will get a first glimpse of this innovative new technology. For the first time New Holland will also be displaying PLM universal run lines. The New Holland guidance system is now able to directly import

mapping and guidance lines from competitive systems. By using a USB stick, users can simply plug and go without any requirement to load software or manipulate ﬁles. Part of this exciting new technology update is referred to as Intelliturn, where the guidance system calculates and performs end-of-row turning. The turn is optimised according to speed, implement and conditions and can be programmed to skip

rows, be activated by fence line, end of swath or other identiﬁed boundaries. Not to be missed is New Holland’s new big square baler, the BigBaler PLUS 1290 with IntelliBale.

Balers are ready for a challenge Case IH has unveiled its new series of large square balers to the Australian market, designed for the toughest crop types in the most challenging of conditions. The Case IH LB434 XL series retains the features and adaptability of the current LB434 units, while introducing a range of new attributes to get the job done more efficiently. Available in two models, the LB434S XL standard and LB434R XL rotor cut, the new balers feature an 80 cm longer bale chamber, wider panel widths to reduce material accumulation behind twine boxes, upgraded platform and hand railings, and new active bale eject system, while retaining 48 plunger strokes per minute, wide pick-ups and six double-tie knotters. Case IH hay and harvest product manager Tim Slater said the unit was perfectly designed for large-scale hay and forage operations with a lot of ground to cover. In lengthening the bale chamber, bale density has increased by up to 10 per cent from previous models with a more stable bale density in various operating conditions, and better bale shape.

The longer bale chamber also means bales exit the bale chute closer to the ground for a more gentle drop, minimising the risk of twine breakages. “Greater density means more crop per bale, decreasing bale count as well as reduced handling, wrapping and transportation costs, helping producers economically reach new markets,” Mr Slater said. Structurally, the LB434 XL series has been strengthened to accommodate the additional weight to the rear from the extended bale chamber, and the plunger has been upgraded to handle the higher anticipated loads from the increased density.

“Folding handrails have been redesigned to allow for more comfortable and safer access to the whole service area, and the new railings project further to the front of the machine to offer safer access to this area.” The new models also feature an active bale ejection system with full and partial bale eject, which replaces the previous passive system. In the new model, when the bale eject is operated the 10 bale eject

teeth are driven into the bale, ensuring all teeth are fully engaged to drive the bale out of the chamber. “These new balers are not only generating heavier bales with a greater density, but also providing the technology producers require to more efficiently harvest each crop at its peak nutritional value,” Mr Slater said. The Case IG LB434 XL series will be on display at this year’s Elmore Field Days at Site 771.

The increased space between the side frame and the twine boxes helps to reduce crop accumulation and provides more space on the maintenance platform. “Continual safety upgrades also remain a priority for Case IH and these new LB434 XL large square balers reﬂect that,” Mr Slater said.

what their requirements were and priorities,” Greg said. “We came up with multiple options which met their requirements as well as additional suggestions. “From here the details were ﬁnalised in terms of the exact dimensions of doors and clearance heights and we were able to draw the line between what the client required and their budget constraints.”
