Welcome back to Elmore Field Days in 2022! It is such a fantastic statement to be able to say after two unpredictable years. We are excited to see our committee members, sponsors, community, volunteers, exhibitors and the public back to the Elmore Field Days site in October 2022. If anyone had told you before the coronavirus pandemic was announced that it would shut down the world, the Australian states would shut their borders to each other, we would all be locked up in our homes and schools would be shut and all learning would be online, you would have laughed and said “that would never happen”. What an interesting time it has been to live through. The unfortunate decision was made in July 2020 that the 2020 Elmore Field Days would not go ahead due to the ongoing pandemic and the continued restrictions within Victoria. We had high hopes for the 2021 Elmore Field Days to go ahead, however the tough decision was made by the committee to cancel the event in August 2021 due to the ongoing changes in restrictions within Victoria.
In March this year, the Elmore Events Centre hosted the Elmore Tractor Pull in association with St Joseph’s Primary School in Rochester. The event was a huge success, and we are looking forward to hosting it again in March 2023. Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors — without you this event would not have gone ahead. To the Down Under Modified Tractor Pulling Association, a special thank you for putting on a fantastic display and show.

On Tuesday at 10 am in the auditorium, Jane Bunn will be speaking about understanding Victorian rainfall now and into the future. Other activities to see around the site are Snake Safe Victoria, Peter Hodge Camels, Heritage Draft Horses and Bendigo Marketplace hosting kids’ Duringactivities.thepast two years we have been able to improve the Elmore Event Centre site with increased rainwater storage facilities on-site to more than one million litres, and potable water and waste points on the southern end of the site. This will lead to further opportunities in the future to expand the range of events held at the Elmore Event Centre.
A highlight of this year’s Elmore Field Days is the 20-year celebration of the Ag Art Wear competition. This year will be a walk down memory lane with a parade showcasing garments from the past 19 years of competition. These garments are made from materials found on farms, such as silage wrap, chicken wire and cattle tags. Make sure you get down to the auditorium in the General Interest Pavilion to have a look.
We were fortunate enough to host the Victorian Scout Jamboree in December 2021/January 2022, (rather than the National Scout Jamboree as originally planned due to restrictions), and it was great to see the Elmore Field Days site being used once again. Over the 10 days, we saw about 7000 Scouts, volunteers and leaders pass through the site. It was a great effort and commitment from all those involved in running such a large event during these times.

The first Australian modified tractor pull was held at the Elmore Field Days in 1976, and this year the Elmore Events Centre was excited to bring the tractor pull back to where it all began.

The Elmore Field Days Committee, St Joseph’s Primary School in Rochester and Down Under Modified Tractor Pulling Association (Down Under MTPA) partnered together to present this event, which was a Whatgreat success.isatractor pull? A modified tractor pulls a weighted sled along an 11 m wide, 100 m long dirt track and, as the tractor pulls the sled further, the more forward the weight goes on the sled — causing the sled to get harder to pull. When the tractor ‘pulls’ the whole 100 m this is called a ‘full pull’. Tractor pulling is known as most powerful motorsport due to some tractors having more than one engine with some of them being over 1000 hp.

To celebrate the 20th and final year of the Ag Art Wear competition, this year’s parade will showcase garments from the past 19 years of Thecompetition.paradewill feature the imaginative, unique and artistic outfits made from agricultural materials found on farms.
Some of the materials used included chicken wire, pinecones, silage mesh, stockfeed bags, wall/ roof installation, cattle tags and hay “Eachband.year it was exciting to see the entries coming through and what new materials the designers had thought to incorporate,” Ag Art Wear Committee chair Lorraine Trewick said. “It was amazing seeing a ball gownstyle dress be made from weed mat, flywire, orange safety mesh, cord, washers and poly pipe.” This year the Ag Art Wear Committee is excited to bring the showcase together at the field days, being able to see the range of the entries over the years. “It is amazing to see where we first started to where we are now,” Lorraine said. “The quality of the garments has increased each year, with lots of the designers having entered for many years. They want to outdo their last garment, so the standard has lifted each year.”
The Ag Art Wear competition started in 2001 at the Elmore Field Days, after the committee was approached by the chief executive officer of the New Zealand Ag Art Wear competition to be its Australian partner. Every garment was unique, as it was up to the imagination of the designer and what they could pull together from the different materials they found on the farm.
Head along to the showcase, which will be held in the auditorium in the General Interest Pavilion at 11 am and 2 pm daily, with the final parade being held on Thursday at 2pm.

Background: Merino sheep have normally been shorn once a year for the past 200 years in Australia, but now the tradition is no longer the normal on some Shearingfarms.adult Merino sheep more than once a year is slowly becoming a more common practice as sheep are becoming larger, grow heavier fleeces and have longer staple Somelengths.farming operations now shear adult sheep every six months, while others may shear at eight-monthly intervals, or three times in two years.

The2019.first breed type was a medium Peppin from the Riverina with a good emphasis on wool, the second being tested is a larger-framed and plainer-bodied dual-purpose type from northern Victoria. The wethers are being run together as one mob for three years. Interim results indicate a late spring shearing as lambs did not increase body weight relative to those first shorn in autumn, but the first shearing as lambs in autumn increased the body weight by around 1.5kg and increased clean wool production by about five per cent. As adults, there seems to be no body weight difference — the sixmonth shearing has to date not increased sheep weights relative to the annual shearing.

Pipe-and-riser systems have a leaky problem, but a Numurkah invention has solved it.
Business rises to the occasion
Mick Hogan Excavations and Poly Irrigation has been working with irrigators for a long time and designed its own riser after seeing leakage problems from riser seal failures. The Numurkah business now sells the only riser on the market that works with the water pressure to hold the water seal against the Thissealing seat.meansthe stronger the pressure, the stronger the seal, as it’s the pressure which holds the seal in place until the irrigator wants it open. Less plastic with new wrap
Less plastic is the big new thing for Tama Australia.
The baling net wrap product, called TamaNet Royal, cuts down on plastic by baling high-density cereal crops and heavy-duty bales with less ‘wraps’. According to Tama, each bale wrapped in TamaNet Royal only requires 2.5 wraps, compared to the traditional four wraps. This means there’s up to 45 per cent less plastic used for each bale, or up to one kilometre less plastic for every 100 bales.

Throughout the three days, Snake Safe Victoria will be conducting half-hour demonstrations — one will be on venomous snakes and snake safety and the second is a wildlife show featuring snakes, crocodiles, wallabies, goannas, lizards, dingoes and more. The 2022 Elmore Field Days is set to be bigger and better than ever, with plenty to see and do for our upcoming generation of farmers. The committee has made sure there are plenty of activities for the kids – ranging from machinery exhibits (so they can get up close with the big tractors) to an animal farm and wildlife display.
Auditorium. Narelle is one of Victoria’s favourite librarians who delights in entertaining children with her stories. There will be plenty of animals around the site to keep the kids entertained. In the shearing shed they can watch the blade shearing, while outside the heritage horses will demonstrate past agricultural practices, and they can even ride a Snakecamel.Safe Victoria will have a display featuring a range of Australian wildlife, with demonstrations every half-hour and photo opportunities to get up close and personal for amazing wildlife encounters.

Look up and avoid tragedy

• Move — relocate large delivery storage sites to a safe area away from powerlines.
• Observe the No Go Zones — rules and distances for safety clearances near overhead powerlines.
• Always be aware of what is above you, and use a spotter.
The simple act of looking up before starting work can save your life or the life of a co-worker. During the past two years the state’s safety regulator, Energy Safe Victoria, has seen a worrying increase in powerline-related incidents, especially in regional Inareas.the first two months of 2022 there were 58 powerline-related incidents in Victoria, including one Andfatality.inMay, a Bendigo farmer was hospitalised after the sprayer he was operating contacted overhead high voltage powerlines. In 2021, ESV recorded 141 incidents involving contact with overhead Powerlinespowerlines. are part of the landscape, but sometimes, when operating heavy machinery it’s easy to forget they are there. With the sun in your eyes, trees in your line of vision or if your attention is on something else, you may not see how close you are to them. Powerlines are also more difficult to see at dawn and dusk. You don’t have to make contact with a powerline for it to be fatal — electricity can jump gaps. Be extra aware in rural areas as overhead powerlines are predominantly single conductor lines that are difficult to see and easy to forget. Don’t expect a warning. STOP. Look Up and Live ESV’s Look up and Live campaign raises awareness of the dangers of vehicles, such as tipper trucks, augers, cranes and tractors operating too close to powerlines with the threat of electrical shock or a fatal electrocution, a very real risk. Everyone working on farms and involved in the delivery of materials has a duty of care to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Avoid hitting powerlines with these tips•Whenarriving or working at a site, STOP. Look up. Identify where the powerlines are — and don’t get closer than 6.4 m to them.

The chance to sit in a police car is always popular with children, and adults are fascinated to see all the equipment that officers have at their Atdisposal.thisyear’s field days, a command post bus will be on show and visitors will be able to have a look inside and see all the equipment available to officers when they are conducting operations out of their usual offices, from complex communications equipment to remotely monitored Leadingcameras.Senior Constable Shane Bourke at Elmore police station, said there would be highway patrol cars as well as the command post bus and they were hoping to get a police motorbike as well.
Police presentations will be held daily in the auditorium at 1.30 pm for half an hour. Presentations will be on police assistance line, farm safety and thefts and prevention. It is expected that members from the proactive policing units, such as loss prevention, firearms safety, school safety and youth liaison will be on hand, but that of course depends on what incidents they get called to. Police officers will be available each day to answer questions from the public, be they how to deal with nuisance and scam phone calls, how to join police ranks or how to increase farm security. out the police vehicles is always a popular past time. Sunny outlook for farm businesses
Residents of Victoria’s sunny north are leading the state’s clean energy charge, with Mildura, Shepparton, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Wallan the top five regional postcodes for solar uptake. And with energy costs continuing to rise, there has never been a better time to join nearly 215,000 Victorians who are reaping the savings benefits of solar. The Heritage Draught Horse Club will be at Elmore Field Days again this year with their magnificent animals, showing how the land used to be worked before tractors were Heritageintroduced.Draught
The aim of the club is to promote all aspects of the uses of the draught horse in bygone days and to encourage their use in today’s activities, be it on the land, in the bush or for tourism purposes.
Horse Club secretary John Bramley said club members would demonstrate how the horses were harnessed and the implements hitched up, and the horses would work with scarifiers or harrows, singly, in pairs, in a four and even all at once. The club was formed several years ago by people who are enthusiastic about draught horses and working them on the land. The members work the horses on their properties.

They also might not make time for a yearly skin cancer check. “It is important to showcase what exceptional services we do have access to in a rural area,” Max said.
The Elmore Field Days Committee knows with farmers as members, they often prioritise work over their health. That’s why it is so important to offer these services when people are already walking past. “It can be difficult finding the time to get away from the farm and go to the doctor,” committee member and local farmer Max Williams said. “It is great being able to attend the field days, see the machinery, but also get my yearly skin cancer check.”
