A rewarding career with children Nurturing the next generation is “rewarding and fulfilling” says City of Greater Shepparton Children’s Services team leader Jackie Vibert. “I enjoy coming into work and going out to visit the children and educators in the services, being greeted by the children’s warm, friendly, happy faces that are so eager to learn,” said Ms Vibert, who has worked for council in Early Childhood Services since 1998. Greater Shepparton City Council employs about 130 permanent educators and 23 maternal and child health nurses, plus on-call relief educators and administration and leadership support for all services. With linkages between Maternal and Child Health, playgroup, pre-kinder, kindergarten and long daycare facilities, council has every aspect of children’s early years covered. “I have watched children grow and develop in every aspect and it really is rewarding to know that I have been part of that,” Ms Vibert said.
“Knowing that each and every day, everything that I do supports the children to learn and continue to develop to be the best they can be.” The families and children that attend council facilities are greeted with warm and welcoming professionalism in a secure, friendly and caring environment. The learning environment allows children to explore, have fun and be stimulated in all aspects of learning and childhood development including physical health and wellbeing, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills, communication skills and general knowledge of the world around them. “The early years are crucial in every child’s development, as in the first five years a child’s brain develops connections faster than any other time in their lives,” Ms Vibert said.
“I have seen some amazing progression by our services, providing innovative learning and wellbeing support through programs such as yoga, meditation and autonomy skills as well as building on their communication talents through Auslan and Makaton programs.” These positive impacts and influences help children develop and grow, supporting and nurturing developmental needs to enable them to fulfil their dreams and foster their imaginations. “I would recommend anyone who enjoys working with children and having a positive influence to a child’s education and care to come and join our team,” Ms Vibert said. McLovin’ a career at Maccas McDonald’s success is primarily linked to the successful hiring, development and retention of employees, which is why the organisation is proud of the development and career opportunities available to its people. Mooroopna McDonald’s restaurant manager Melek Karslioglu says leading and training people is what she loves about her role. “It’s awesome that I get to hire people; sometimes it’s their very first job,” she said. “I can help coach and develop them with skills to help them grow in our organisation or they can take with them into their next career role.” Mrs Karslioglu started out with Maccas as a crew member in 2012, rapidly climbing the ranks by taking advantage of the in-house leadership training available and eventually taking on a management position after completing a Certificate III. After taking a hiatus of a few years after the birth of her daughter, Mrs Karslioglu has continued to grow her professional career with Maccas without missing
a beat, and has achieved her goal of running her own store. “I’ve always had a passion for McDonald’s … like they say ‘ketchup in the veins’, I’ve always wanted to move up in the ranks,” she said. McDonald’s understands that its people have busy lives and families to take care of, which is why the company offers flexibility to team members to maintain a sustainable work-life balance while developing their careers. “At McDonald’s Mooroopna and all our Shepparton restaurants we aim to provide much more than just a job for our employees,” people and culture manager Cheryl Tapscott said. “We want to offer an enriching and varied employment experience while providing exciting long-term career prospects for everyone.”

Local job opportunities looking bright A bright future for careers in the Shepparton District With an abundance of career possibilities and a stateof-the art education plan, the Shepparton district has a positive future ahead for those entering the workforce or changing careers. We have a diverse range of skilled jobs to choose from right on our doorstep and an education system that
equips jobseekers with the skills and knowledge they need to confidently step into these positions and thrive right here in the Goulburn Valley. We have gone through some tough years in many industries and we still have a way to go before we meet the labour demands of the agricultural sector, but our recovery has been impressive with unemployment figures falling in February this year.
The final stage of the Shepparton Education Plan will play a vital component in upskilling our younger workers. It will help school leavers explore pathways into further education and training. The plan will ensure our local tertiary education options reflect our community’s needs and the established and emerging industries in our region. Once the Shepparton Education Plan’s final stage is delivered, we will see more course options available locally from entry level certificate courses through to degree and post-graduate levels.

Happy staff mean happy customers From humble beginnings in 1999, local family-owned business Trans Tank International (TTi) has enjoyed rapid expansion and strong product demand for many years with a proud reputation as a vibrant and happy workplace. “Solid growth is a direct result of the great work that our team does each and every day to produce products that are considered benchmark leaders in the transportable tank industry,” general manager Ross Buchner said. “A lot of businesses say it’s all about the customer, and in one sense that’s right, but on the other hand it can’t be at the expense of our employees,” he said. “We say that if our staff are happy then they will keep our customers happy. That’s why our people are integral to our ongoing success.” TTi’s manufacturing hub is here to stay in Nathalia, dedicated to providing jobs and contributing to the local economy. “We regard ourselves as a world class business operating in a small rural area
committed to providing stable and progressive job opportunities that are not often available in regional areas,” Mr Buchner said. Built for the rugged Australian landscape and exported across the world, the Nathalia and Sunshine North sites design, develop and manufacture water cartage tanks, diesel tanks, firefighting equipment, civil water carts and spray equipment for agriculture and civil industries. The company still has employees that began working at TTi back in 1999, and more than 50 per cent of employees have been with the company for more than five years. Thanks to this dedication and hard work, the TTi brand is now distributed nationally through a dealer network of more than 200 stores.
Trans Tank International wouldn’t be where it is today without its people.
“TTi takes pride in its company culture,” human resources manager Carissa Marino said. “We promote care, respect, collaboration and inclusion; each
employee is treated as an integral part of the business — not a number.” TTi has an exciting future and is constantly looking for passionate staff to join the growing team.
The importance of your first job It is so beneficial for young people to gain experience in the workforce via their schools or as a casual/part-time job. BY LISA KERR, GMLLEN PROJECT CO‑ORDINATOR This was highlighted even further in Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network’s recent intern-led research: ‘How Work Works — getting young people employment in our growing industries’. GMLLEN’s research found employers want younger employees to ensure their future. Many of these industries’ workforces are ageing and they are trying to attract young people to rejuvenate their workforces. GMLLEN is running a pilot mentor program this year called Link2Learn, aimed at supporting 15 young people to navigate their next career or education pathway, with the support of local community leaders. You can find out more here: www.gmllen.com.au/mentor-program/ The benefits of getting out in the workplace earlier allows students to trial different careers and environments, which in turn assists them with navigating their next career or education pathway. Work experiences and casual/parttime work also look fantastic on a resume. Employers love to see that young people have been out there ‘giving it a go’. The ‘How Work Works’ report can be read at: www.gmllen.com.au/howwork-works/

HELPING YOU BEGIN AND FURTHER YOUR HEALTHCARE CAREER With a $229 million upgrade under way at GV Health’s Graham Street campus, it is an exciting time to join the health service. Currently the team is seeking to recruit and retain a workforce capable of meeting the demands of a growing region. Strong partnerships with local education providers are vital to attract people looking to begin and continue their healthcare career. GV Health has seen an increase in its transition to practice programs, with the addition of La Trobe University nursing third-year undergraduates now onsite, second and third-year students employed as registered undergraduate students of nursing, established enrolled nursing graduate programs and an increase in the
registered nurse and midwife graduate program. “Our retention rate remains stable at 85 per cent reflecting our strong support towards our new employees,” GV Health director of nursing and midwifery education Cathy Scott said. Building on this, well-planned clinical rotations in addition to graduate and postgraduate experience offered in a variety of settings has seen a significant investment from the community in scholarships for staff. “With the primary aim to provide optimal
care for all our patients, post-graduate study into speciality areas has been a priority,” Ms Scott said. “We have established pathways into several local programs for critical care, emergency nursing, midwifery, neonatal care, paediatric nursing, palliative care and oncology nursing with La Trobe University and the University of Melbourne.” Distant study opportunities are also available with Deakin University, University of Tasmania and Monash University for perioperative nursing, haemodialysis and aged care.
“GOTAFE and La Trobe University have worked together to assist mapping of the curriculum to support the learner as they advance through their study if entering nursing via TAFE,” Ms Scott said. This enables a student to transition into undergraduate study after completing their diploma. An employment model of the assistant in nursing program has also been established with GOTAFE and has become a strong part of our workforce supporting patient care.
SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE REGION
LOCAL TRAINING PATHWAYS A PRIORITY Dr Rajlaxmi Khopade and Dr Shiromi Karunaratne’s training journeys represent just what is possible at GV Health, and what is to come. After nine years and five years of training respectively, Dr Khopade and Dr Karunaratne marked a milestone in GV Health’s training programs as they were the first to complete their entire specialist training in psychiatry by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) locally. This was something that had not been done in the decade since GV Health became accredited to provide the training in 2012. This success story is one which GV Health director of medical services Dr Junyi Shi hopes will be the first of many across a number of disciplines. “Primarily, people need to go through a large centre such as Melbourne to get that kind of training experience and to become a specialist,” he said.
There are a number of opportunities for secondary school students to begin their healthcare career at GV Health.
established, which allows students to be onsite in GV Health’s practical lab gaining experience through simulated procedures.
Through partnerships with secondary schools across the Goulburn Valley, GV Health offers week-long work experience placements to Year 10 students.
Students can obtain a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance at the completion of the two-year program, which provides students with clinical placement opportunities within the allied health field.
Students have the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a nurse, an allied health professional or a tradesperson, or experience the numerous administration, IT and support services roles that exist within the health service. Due to COVID-19 restraints this program was temporarily halted. However programs are being re-established and should take place in the latter half of 2022. Additionally, GV Health also offers VET in School (VETis) programs which support Year 11 and 12 students to experience a career in the health service in a structured and supported environment. Recently, a codesigned program with La Trobe University and Notre Dame College was
Another successful pathway between education and employment has been the GAP year program.
“What we are seeing now is more of an interest in larger regional centres such as Shepparton because the presentations are becoming increasingly complex. “And that is true of all regional centres, meaning we are able to provide a more sophisticated training program for our doctors.” Additionally, universities are placing more of an emphasis on regional training pathways and rural settings. “Being regional, our junior doctors get exposed to a wide gamut of conditions which walk in to our Emergency Department on a daily basis,” Dr Shi said. “It’s fantastic from a training perspective as it allows our training doctors to have a wider experience of conditions.”
This is available to Year 12 graduates who are interested in pursuing a career at GV Health. The participants work at the health service while they complete their studies throughout the 12-month program. In 2022, GV Health offered five GAP year positions across allied health and nursing. GV Health is also partnering with GOTAFE to offer opportunities for current staff at GV Health to develop into the future, with some staff currently completing a Certificate IV in Health Administration and Certificate III in Food Services.

No need to go away to study
Alexa Mori is studying for a Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education at La Trobe University in Shepparton.
Alexa Mori says the best thing about studying regionally is the welcoming community feeling around campus. “Class sizes are generally smaller, so you’re able to really get to know the people you’re studying alongside,” she said. “The best part about studying regionally is that the campus is smaller and it is easier to find your way around. “You can also find parking nearby as it is not as congested as city campuses.” La Trobe University’s Shepparton campus offered the degree that Alexa wanted to pursue — a Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education — while allowing her to stay close to her family and friends. “It was a comfort knowing that I didn’t have to travel to attend university and have to worry about organising extra things such as
accommodation and employment in a new place,” she said. “The Shepparton campus is also in a central location in Fryers St which is convenient.” Since commencing her studies at La Trobe, Alexa has been offered the opportunity to become a Student Ambassador employed by the university. “Which was an honour and rewarding to be involved in,” she said. Alexa can’t wait to get out into the workforce and see what opportunities the future holds. “I want to teach in a primary school as I really enjoy working with young children. I will remain open to opportunities to teach in kindergartens and for further study.”
