Employment and Training 2020

Regional Australia to lead economic recovery Australian Bureau of Statistics data outlining the increased rate of unemployment in the Shepparton region, due mainly to the coronavirus pandemic, is a worrying trend. The number of people employed dropped by 4500 in the month to June with youth employment (15 to 24) hardest hit with figures showing the region’s unemployment rate sitting at about 30 per cent — the highest in regional Victoria. Job seekers are now being forced to step outside of their comfort zones and despite the frustration of losing employment, or working reduced hours, people are applying for work in alternative industries or seeking out training opportunities to upskill or re-skill. Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum said regional Australia would play a vital role in rebuilding the economy in the post-COVID recovery period.

“In May, nearly 30,000 jobs were advertised in regional Australia, showing the foundation of our country’s economic recovery will be built in our regions,” Mr Drum said. “When the jobs return, our communities will benefit first.” He said the Federal Government’s $1 billion JobTrainer fund would provide access to free or low-cost training places in the areas the economy needed most, delivering more than 88,000 places in Victoria and boosting training and jobs in communities across the Nicholls electorate. “Supporting people to upskill and reskill will give them the best chance of getting a job and will help businesses

get the skilled workers they need,” Mr Drum said. “When we finally emerge from COVID-19, Australia will have a highly skilled and appropriately trained workforce to drive the economic recovery and future growth.” A national directory of vocational education and training organisations and courses has been developed to assist prospective students to search for and compare VET courses and training providers.

Furthermore, Mr Drum said the government was committed to the regions being “front and centre” of the nation’s recovery from COVID-19 and has made an additional $400 million investment to increase opportunities for regional, rural and remote students to get a world-class education, and to support regional university campuses. From student to trainer Steve Cranage’s new role as an IT trainer and assessor at GOTAFE is the perfect fit. The 46-year-old Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri man has been employed in various industries but his latest job — to engage students with learning — combines all skills learnt from previous workplaces. A former Telstra call centre operator, IT supervisor for a local medical clinic and residential accommodation support worker for University of Melbourne’s Academy of Sport, Health and Education, Mr Cranage became a fulltime student about 18 months ago. In between stints caring for his ill father and elderly mother Mr Cranage twice started Certificate IV in

Information Technology studies but for various reasons never finished. “I decided at the start of last year to go back and finish it, but that course no longer existed,” Mr Cranage said. Instead Certificate IV in Cyber Security was on the Free-TAFE list. “Cyber security has always interested me, and I actually thought about being a cyber security analyst,” Mr Cranage said. Encouraged to also study Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology, Mr Cranage was identified by his trainers as a potential future trainer so added Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to his workload. On July 20 he went from student to trainer and is implementing different

strategies to the virtual classroom to mentor and engage students and foster learning. Last year Mr Cranage received the GOTAFE Business and IT Department Outstanding Student of the Year Award and has been nominated for the Victorian Training Awards’ Koorie Student of the Year Award. The Victorian Government has recently injected $163 million to expand the Free-TAFE program to assist people

to upskill and retrain for a new career in sectors desperate for skilled workers. The funding is part of the state’s skillsled strategy to drive economic recovery following the coronavirus pandemic. GOTAFE chief executive officer Travis Heeney said since the program’s inception in 2019, the organisation had enrolled more than 2000 students in Free-TAFE courses. Upwards of 50 courses are available on the Free-TAFE program.

Remote Learning

Once again, we find ourselves in Stage Three lockdown measures with students learning from home. The Class of 2020 is a unique cohort, pioneering remote and flexible learning techniques that no doubt will benefit us for years to come.

Thank you to all the parents, carers, students and school staff managing this herculean undertaking. You are all contributing to the very valuable task of saving lives and ensuring that the education of our students continues.

Stay safe. Stay home.

We help our employees make the most of their time with us and provide an unmatched opportunity for people to learn skills that they can apply throughout their working lives. As such we see that our success as a business is linked to the development of local talent.

Working for the community

Tanayah Cranage is combining further study and employment.

Two Greater Shepparton City Council staff members have embraced further education to pursue their careers of choice and work to better the community, but in very different settings. Proud Aboriginal woman Tanayah Cranage is motivated to create opportunities for positive change and providing support for community members while Aimee Stannard is helping to beautify the towns we call home. Since commencing with council in January 2019, Miss Cranage — holder

of a Certificate IV in Community Services — has worked in several temporary and secondment roles before being appointed to her present community development officer position earlier this year. The job entails fostering close relationships with community groups and agencies, local leaders,

neighbourhood houses and volunteers, identifying issues relevant to them and planning and implementing strategies to manage their concerns. Miss Cranage said her role aimed to strengthen the links between the community and council and she is also studying a Bachelor in Human Services specialising in Indigenous Australian Welfare. “In the future I hope to compete my degree, and continue to work with community members in particular with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. “I am passionate about my culture and our young people, and because of that I hope to be able to provide a program with a focus on cultural, educational and wellbeing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth,” she said. Horticultural services officer Aimee Stannard is a self-confessed “outdoors person” so her transition from working in the gaming and hospitality industry to council’s parks and gardens team was a perfect fit. At age 25, Mrs Stannard started a mature age apprenticeship with council and attained Certificate III in Parks and Gardens at Wodonga TAFE. That was five years ago and since then has balanced completing her studies with becoming a first-time mum and, in April 2019, securing a full-time role with her qualification.

Aimee Stannard joined council’s parks and gardens team as a mature-age apprentice.

Mrs Stannard is part of the team that maintains the council gardens in Mooroopna, Tatura, Undera and Murchison. A fortnightly program involves weeding, mulching and planting out garden beds, as well as having input to garden design. “I really enjoy being outside, and I loved learning about all aspects of gardening, now I get to put that knowledge into practice,” Mrs Stannard said. One of the positives of working for an organisation such as council was the opportunity for career progression, and support from colleagues to achieve that.

Wide range of career pathways at SPC

Head of manufacturing David Frizzell says there are many opportunities at SPC.

Maintaining SPC’s position as a global agribusiness is underpinned by the collective input from management and staff — a diverse range of people with a broad variety of skills and expertise.

The food producer offers roles for between 500 and 750 seasonal workers each year and has a people strategy focused on developing an entrepreneurial culture, which encourages its team to embrace careerprogression opportunities, further study and training. Labour co‑ordinator Laura Cormick transitioned into her full-time role two years ago after four seasons as a seasonal employee. “I started my career journey with SPC when I finished high school, at the time I was only going to do a season while I tried to figure out what university course I wanted to study,” Miss Cormick said. “However, I ended up working for four seasons with SPC as a seasonal employee as I loved the work and I loved the people that I worked with.” With no two days ever the same, Miss Cormick said new opportunities were constantly presented to expand her knowledge and further develop

her skills. “SPC has helped my career in many ways, not only with the opportunity for full-time work, but the great support, training and encouragement to grow personally and professionally. “They are always creating new ways for me to expand my role and responsibility, challenging me to be more strategic or efficient, and allowing me to contribute to project management.” Head of manufacturing David Frizzell is a long-term employee who said the fast-moving consumer goods industry was dynamic, and in the case of SPC provided Australian consumers with a locally manufactured product. The company has allowed Mr Frizzell time to undertake degree studies as well as receive scholarship opportunities. “There is a continuous pipeline of new and interesting challenges; don’t underestimate the wide range

of options available to you.” He said SPC was not just about the factory work, instead procurement, accounting, legal, engineering, maintenance, sales and marketing, planning, quality, safety, environment, research and development and logistics all offered career pathway options.

GV Health Talent Acquisition Manager Samantha Fraser said these opportunities were important to staff and GV Health aimed to provide flexible, self-directed and contemporary learning pathways. “Whether it’s learning in a clinical-teaching environment, aspiring to build management capabilities or skill development through clinical simulation, we work together to help create opportunities to meet individual development goals and support the needs of our health service,” she said. “We have strong affiliations with leading tertiary partners including the University

of Melbourne, LaTrobe University and Goulburn Ovens TAFE and we work together to create local and evidence-based learning pathways relevant for our people.” GV Health employs around 2,500 people and Ms Fraser said the range of career pathways at the health service included medical, nursing and midwifery to various allied health, corporate support, maintenance and mental health opportunities. Ms Fraser also said it was currently an exciting time to join GV Health. “We are currently in the midst of an extensive redevelopment and once completed, the $229 million state-of-the-art facility will further enhance our acute care

service delivery,” she said. Ms Fraser also highlighted the fact that working in a regional setting not only provided a desirable lifestyle, but also the chance to work across many different areas within GV Health. “Our busy regional health service provides exposure to challenging and stimulating work on a daily basis,” she said. “Whether it’s complex clinical presentations, a diverse case-mix, or opportunities to work across different settings, such as rehabilitation, consulting suites and community care, we believe these experiences help to shape and develop fulfilling careers.”

She said that working in the Goulburn Valley ensured the charm of a regional lifestyle with an extensive range of opportunities such as education and affordable housing. “There is so much on offer for families, couples and individuals,” Ms Fraser said. Ms Fraser said it was not just the lifestyle that made working in a regional setting desirable. “Working and living in the Goulburn Valley means that our people’s lived experience of receiving direct patient care or being part of their loved one’s patient journey is often a regular occurrence and therefore supporting and serving our local community is at the forefront of everything we do,” she said.

Olivia Beesley

Interim Supply Manager

After joining the team at GV Health more than three years ago, Olivia Beesley said she had enjoyed the chance to develop her career. Ms Beesley said she had always wanted to work in healthcare after growing up in Albury in regional New South Wales. “I studied disability services at TAFE and I worked in that sector for a while,” she said. Ms Beesley then went on to study Occupational Therapy at university in Albury before picking up a graduate position at GV Health. “It was my first job out of uni and the team were just so supportive,” she said. “We have such a well-rounded team who work really well together.” Ms Beesley said she had also received incredible support when it came to her professional development.

Justine James described his journey at GV Health as “unusual”. Mr James said he had originally worked overseas as a teacher before moving to Australia in 2011. “I started working at GV Health as a stock person,” he said. But when there was a change in the ordering systems, Mr James said he was given an opportunity to train staff. “They then put me on the backend of the system and from then on I started working in supply.” Mr James said he had been working on the floor for some time when he became the systems warehouse manager. “It was after the resignation of the supply manager that I was given the opportunity to fill the interim position,” he said.

She also said working as an OT provided a range of different opportunities as well.

Mr James said he has now been in the role for two years, in the process of moving to a permanent position.

“I think there’s great opportunities to work across a range of different settings,” she said.

“At GV Health, I strongly believe they truly support everyone if you have the skills,” he said.

“In this region there’s lots of good opportunities.”

“If you have the skills, you will have the chance to grow.”

Coming from a regional area originally, Ms Beesley said living in Shepparton had been great as it was not too different to where she was from. “I’ve made some really beautiful friends here in Shepparton,” she said. “It’s only a couple of hours to get home to Albury and a couple of hours to go to Melbourne as well which is great. “I feel really lucky to have stepped into my role here at GV Health.”

Mr James said one of the things he enjoyed most about working at GV Health was his team in supply. “Everyone works together, and I have an opportunity to lead the team and that’s the most important thing,” he said. Mr James also recommended the regional lifestyle offered in Shepparton. “It is a multicultural city,” he said. “We have everything we need here in Shepparton; there’s all the facilities that are available in Melbourne without all the hassle of traffic,” he said.

Lyn Brett

Charles Oguntade

Transition to Practice Coordinator After starting her career as a hospital-trained state enrolled nurse during the 1990s, Lyn Brett has come a long way at GV Health. Ms Brett said she initially moved away after completing her training, working in other hospitals. But it was when she decided to do her bachelor’s degree in nursing with the University of Melbourne that she came back to the Goulburn Valley. During the 15 years since, Ms Brett said she has taken on a range of educational roles, starting off as a clinical support nurse. “That was my first role in education,” she said. “That role had me floating around different wards and areas offering handson support to new staff, new graduates, students and so forth; we’d pop around and make sure everyone was okay.” Ms Brett said she went on to take on some project-based roles as well as establishing training programs at GV Health. “I’ve loved working at GV Health because of variety of things I’ve been able to do,” she said. “I’ve had a huge variety of different opportunities to work with different people.” Ms Brett said staff were lucky to be exposed to such variety at GV Health as opposed to staff who work in the metropolitan setting. “Our surgical ward, for example, is a general ward, so in our surgery you get exposure to a whole range of different procedures,” she said. She said one of the most important values in her role at GV Health was teamwork. “There’s not one person that works here that’s any more important than anyone else,” she said. Ms Brett, who lives in Seymour, said she would recommend working at GV Health to anyone. “I’ve been travelling for a long time to work here,” she said. “If you want to come and progress your career, there’s opportunities for that. “No two days are ever the same at GV Health.”

GV Health People & Culture team members Arzu Ozturk and Tess Canty.

Forensic Clinical Specialist, Adult Community Mental Health Charles Oguntade has an incredibly unique role with GV Health. “I’m the Forensic Chemical Specialist for the Mental Health Department,” he said. “I provide support for the whole department and I also support the Corrections Department, the court and local police.” Mr Oguntade said the idea behind the role was to embed a specialist into the local area to interface with the justice department. Mr Oguntade explained he had been working at GV Health for 15 years in mental health when he found out about the role. “I’ve always worked in mental health,” he said. “I did my Bachelor training in West Africa and also did postgraduate studies in Mental Health back there,” he said. “At that point I decided I needed change of scene and I registered with board in Australia and relocated.” After working in Melbourne briefly, Mr Oguntade did not enjoy the busy lifestyle and began looking for a position in the regions. After finding a position at GV Health and travelling to Shepparton, Mr Oguntade decided this was the place for him. “Shepparton is a unique place; it’s like the United Nations of Australia,” he said. “It’s a melting pot of races but despite that, they live harmoniously.” Mr Oguntade soon moved from his role on the wards to a department manager before moving into several different mental health roles including a community case manager, clinical manager and working in triage. He said GV Health supported him to undertake the three-month training for his current position. “The amount of support that I get is quite encouraging…your career progression is unlimited,” he said. “The support for career development and career progression has been quite enormous.”

Free service to secure harvest labour Matching employers with job seekers is essential to the efficient operation of Australia’s on-farm food industry. Among the many services offered by MADEC, which has an office in Shepparton, is a skilled team that provides a year-round service to meet seasonal labour market needs. And, on another positive front, the harvest trail service is free. Local harvest officer Brandon Coughlan said Goulburn Valley and Murray Valley growers could leave the recruitment process to MADEC, in turn leaving them more time to concentrate

12

on the all-important task of running their business. “Our team refer workers who meet the grower’s requirements,” Mr Coughlan said. He said feedback from growers, who traditionally sourced their own labour, was that the harvest trail model helped streamline their operation by removing the time-consuming task of finding suitable labour from their daily workload. The MADEC team liaises with growers, industry leaders and associations to keep up with regional trends and industry needs and taps into established relationships with potential labour sources including universities,

backpacker hostels and community groups. “From single placements through to large workforces, the MADEC harvest trail team sources workers with legal work rights, when and where employers need them,” Mr Coughlan said. Identifying seasonal workforce needs and actively promoting employment vacancies, both locally and nationally, was key to maintaining the continuity

of reliable workers at critical times on the harvest calendar. Mr Coughlan said the team advised workers about local accommodation options and access to transport, as well as providing ongoing support throughout the season. In addition, all workers undergo crop-specific safety induction covering any potential hazards, risks and control measures relating to specific crop types.

Since then she has been promoted to crew coach and then area leader before completing a Certificate III in Retail. Finding the right person for the job Employing the person that is the right ‘fit’ for a business and not necessarily the most experienced or qualified candidate, can have a positive impact on the workplace. Superior People recruitment agency founder Graham Wynn has built his own business on exactly that principal. He offers to streamline the employment process by getting a feel for the culture, environment and people of the workplace before identifying suitable new team members. “If the person is the right fit you can train them in other areas; employing the right person for your business is not about ticking boxes, but looking outside of what the resume says,” Mr Wynn said.

16

The recruitment agency, which operates Australia-wide and has an office in New Zealand, has recently opened a branch in Shepparton at the Greater Shepparton Business Centre on New Dookie Rd. Superior People was formed in 2008, the culmination of Mr Wynn’s previous experience in management, consulting and financial roles, including as general manager of two companies, which he grew by investing in the right people. The privately-owned boutique agency is a generalist recruitment agency, finding people for senior management roles through to dog groomers, and everything in between. Mr Wynn said once an employer came to him with an employee request he takes a detailed description of the role, and the type of person sought, before utilising the agency’s data base, networks and social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, to identify candidates.

“We filter through sometimes 300 or 400 resumes, conduct preliminary interviews and then present the employer with the best two or three candidates for them to finalise the process,” Mr Wynn said. He said his business model, which is geared to support small and medium-sized enterprises, differs from competitors by offering a six-month guarantee and flat fee structure. “If a person doesn’t work out or leaves of their own accord within a six-month period, we replace the staff member at no additional cost,” Mr Wynn said. “Our success rate is nearly double the industry standard; over 70 per cent of people we place are still there 12 months after their appointment.” Job seekers can also register their details on the Superior People website. Mr Wynn has regular talkback radio segments nationally on Triple M and SouthernFM Community Radio and

offers free training sessions for job seekers in resume writing and interview techniques. He talks to students about job markets and what employers in various industries are looking for, and donates a percentage of profits to the Edgar’s Mission animal sanctuary. “Having an impact on people’s lives, by helping them find a job, or the right person for their business is so rewarding,” he said.

The Liberal-National Government is investing significantly in a skills package for economic recovery and growth. JobTrainer will deliver around 88,000 places in Victoria and 340,000 across Australia, which will boost training and jobs in our community here in Nicholls.

It will ensure more Australians have the chance to reskill or upskill to fill jobs on the other side of this crisis. We are also expanding and extending the Supporting Apprentices and Trainees wage subsidy with an additional $1.5 billion in funding. Eligibility for the subsidy will be increased to include medium-sized businesses which had an apprentice in place on July 1, 2020. The expanded subsidy will support almost 90,000 businesses which employ around 180,000 apprentices
