he Lux Radio Theatre will recreate those days, through distinguished actors playing multiple roles, creating live sound effects and presenting the vintage soap commercials, with a special performance of The Phantom of the Opera at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on May 12. This intriguing romance has fascinated readers for a hundred years; it has been made into twelve films and two musicals. It’s the story of young singer Christine Daae who makes a big success at the Paris Opera. What nobody knows is that she has been receiving lessons from an unknown tutor; what even she doesn’t know is that he is in fact the man known as the Opera Ghost. When Christine meets her childhood friend Raoul, the Ghost goes into a jealous rage. This show promises to give you an experience like you have never had before. The performance takes inspiration from the original Lux Radio Theatre, a long-running classic radio anthology series broadcast from New York. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand – hence the terminology “soap operas”. The Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre show starts at 10.30am and is followed by a complimentary morning tea and the opportunity to meet the performers. All tickets are $20 (including morning tea) and are available from www.wangarattapac. com.au or by calling the Box Office on 03 5722 8105.

The Kiwis vs the Aussies

Lake Mulwala provides a beautiful backdrop for high-powered racing action.

The trans-Tasman battle for the 2016 EC Griffith Cup hits Lake Mulwala on April 29, 30 and May 1.

T

he 103rd running of the cup will see the Kiwis do battle with the Aussies for on-water supremacy, presented by the Victorian Speed Boat Club (VSBC) and Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism. Three days of fast-paced, high-powered boat racing action will be offered absolutely free to spectators. The EC Griffith Cup gets its name from the trophy’s donor, Earnest Charles Griffith, who, in 1910, presented a hand-beaten solid silver trophy for the Australasian Championship. Each year the cup is held on the waters of last year’s winner, meaning there’s more up for grabs than just the cup itself. Boats can be of any design to contest the EC Griffith Cup, as long as they are inboard and powered by a single automotive engine. The event is generally the domain of the Grand Prix Hydroplanes, the world’s fastest circuit race boats which roar across the water surface at speeds in excess of 280kms per hour. Australia’s Grant Harrison, the current holder of the EC Griffith Cup, is excited at the prospect of racing the Kiwis on Lake Mulwala again. He is determined to defend the cup, securing a ‘threepeat’ for himself and GP1 and at the same time ensuring the 104th event is held in Australia in 2017.

Don’t miss the roaring, fast-paced action of the EC Griffith Cup.

Grant Harrison in action on Lake Mulwala in 2010.

Grant has a long association with Yarrawonga Mulwala, loves racing on Lake Mulwala and is a huge supporter of the lake as a boat racing venue. “I am Lake Mulwala’s official ambassador when it comes to the high octane sport of power boat racing,” he said. “The Yarrawonga foreshore is perfect for the viewing public and the proximity to Belmore Street makes the location second to none.” Not to be outdone, New Zealander Jack Lupton is bringing the full contingent of Lupton Boats to Lake Mulwala for the EC Griffith Cup – four in total - determined to bring the event and the trophy back to his homeland.

The race weekend also plays host to the Les Spears Memorial for Unlimited Displacements and the Jack Kavanagh Memorial for 6 Litre Displacements. Both races are sought after prizes within the respective race class. YMT Executive Officer Noel Wright said the EC Griffith Cup promised to be a great event for Yarrawonga and Mulwala. “The EC Griffith Cup is a free entry event which will result in a large number of visitors to our towns over the weekend,” Mr Wright said. “We have a variety of food stall holders organised for the event and kids jumping castles and slides on the foreshore, however, with free entry the boat racing fraternity and

spectator base will have no barrier to the migration into Belmore Street for shopping excursions during the festivities. “The economic impact of the EC Griffith Cup is estimate to be in excess of $2 million into our community.” In addition to some heart pumping on-water racing, the Satellite City Street Rod Club will be hosting a Show ‘n’ Shine with 100 cars on the foreshore within the EC Griffith Cup event on April 30. This display will add another dimension to the festivities and is great opportunity to get up close and personal with some impressive machinery of another kind.

L

ast year saw Anzac Day mark 100 years since the landing at Gallipoli, this year, marks 100 years since the devastating, bloody battles of the Western Front. The Australian War Memorial timeline looks back at the war effort in 1916; After the evacuation of all British, New Zealand and Australian troops from Anzac Cove in December, 1915, Australian forces had sustained 26,000 casualties of which 8000 were killed in action or died of wounds or disease. In July, 2016, Anzac troops arrived in France in the build-up to the battle of the Somme, a major British offensive orchestrated by General Sir Douglas Haig in conjunction with the French. The plan coincided with several other offensives being planned in other theatres intended to create a rupture in the German line which could then be exploited with a decisive blow. Alongside the British 61st Division, the Australian 5th Division attacked the German positions near Fromelles. The intention was to make a demonstration in

For the Australians, the action was a costly and unsuccessful introduction to the war on the Western Front, with the 5th Division suffering 5,533 casualties in less than 24 hours. July 23-September 3 – The Battle of Poziéres. Anzac troops were assigned the task of capturing Poziéres village and moving the line North. The successful capture of the Germanoccupied village Mouquet Farm pushed a bulge in the British line, allowing German artillery to relentlessly shell the Australian positions from multiple sides. The 1st Division suffered 5,285 casualties over five days. The 2nd and 4th Anzac Divisions also rotated in and out of the line, suffering heavy casualties but ultimately failing to take the farm. The mounted troops were able to turn the flank of the attacking enemy, who were ultimately forced to withdraw. T

he Savernake School of Arts Hall Committee is hosting the event to bring generations together and celebrate all things local with a special presentation from guest speaker, and author of ‘From Bihar to Berkeley – The Extraordinary Life of Plum Rutherford Haet’, Andrea Palmer. Andrea Palmer was born in Phoenix, Arizona to an artist father and an opera singer mother. Thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship awarded to her mother, the family spent three years in Germany when Andrea was a toddler. Returning to Phoenix, Andrea attended All Saint’s Episcopal Day School on an academic scholarship and later earned a Degree in Economics at the University of California, San Diego. While working for ATM Service Corporation in San Francisco, she had the pleasure of meeting Plum Rutherford Haet in 1982. A couple of decades later she encouraged Plum to consider allowing a biography to be written. Plum could not imagine that anyone could be interested in her life although she was happy to provide many anecdotes. “From Bihar to Berkeley – The Extraordinary Life of Plum Rutherford Haet” conveys the fascinating true story of the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat and her escapades serving in the Burmese Army, travelling the world during the 1950’s and joining the student body at UC Berkeley to study Russian. The event will also feature two ‘homegrown’ published poets in Audrey Duncan author of ‘Reflections’, from Yarrawonga and Mary Dowling author of ‘The Fabric of Life’, formerly from Savernake, now residing in Mulwala. Both ladies will recite poems with a regional flavour. The hall committee has had huge support from the younger members of the community in organising the event and as part of the afternoon will be
