Rich Glen Celebrates Farmgate Anniversary

Our Farmgate Store

From little things big things grow Located 7 kilometres west of Yarrawonga along the Murray Valley Highway is a bustling award winning farm gate business known as Rich Glen Olive Oil. Visiting this impressive farm gate attraction you would be surprised to discover that without the farm gate store this impressive olive farm may have taken a different course.

How it began Situated across 1000 acres Rich Glen Estate was first created when owner Franc Vodusek purchased two neighbouring properties, Rich Fields in 1982 and Glen Loft in 1984. Franc had great vision for the property and in 1998-99 along with youngest son Daimien planted more than 35,000 olive trees after identifying there was a shortage of olive oil supply in the domestic market. Soon after he built a state-of-art processing facility so the oil could be freshly pressed immediately after it was harvested. However, eight years ago Franc and son Daimien seriously contemplated selling the farm even pulling out all the trees due to the extremely competitive bulk olive oil market. With foreign imports flooding the market it was becoming increasing harder to sell the

Daimien and wife Ros knew that they needed to get serious about value adding, and so they turned one of their kids bedrooms into a "little" shop and started "creating". The business was getting one or two customers per week initially, “but gradually it grew and we began to realise its potential,” Ros said. Initially employing three part time staff the business went from strength to strength and within five years the little shop was bursting at the seams, so they grew with it and moved the business into their home.

The vision

To make the business more viable and to keep customers coming back Ros and Daimien started

diversifying into new products such as olive oil salad dressings, jams, dukkahs, herbal teas, skin care products and much more. They then decided to transform the 100 year old home into a much bigger farm gate store featuring a garden area for families and groups to enjoy and relax. “We wanted to turn it into an attraction, an experience for people to enjoy,” Ros said. “It’s now been 12 months since the home was completely transformed into a farm gate store and the results are amazing. “We now have 150 products, all made on the property. We've incorporated a café with gorgeous coffee and homemade cakes as well as offering a light lunch which includes a hearty ‘Soup of the Day’, and yummy toasted focaccias all part of our new Winter Menu. Do yourself a favour and visit this wonderful family business. Relax and soak up the warm atmosphere in the beautifully renovated homestead, bush tucker garden and vegetable maze with amazing metal artefacts and the store’s friendly and informative staff. Rich Glen Estate has truly become a famous attraction on the Farm Gate Trail.

JUNE 24-28

With the assistance of a mysterious figure known only as Jewel, her path will converge with Chip’s - and transform the way we look at our shared future. The Motion of Light in Water is inspired by Delany’s autobiography of the same name, as well as his novels Babel-17 and Empire

P

resented by Hothouse Theatre and Elbow Room in association with Theatre Works the story celebrates the strength we find through our differences. It is a thrilling journey into the imaginative possibilities of science fiction, inspired by the life and work of a truly original subversive figure, Samuel R Delaney. In the early 1960s, Chip and Marilyn – born in a violent New York City – support one another in their struggles against intolerance and poverty. But for Chip, the only way he’s allowed to publish the truth about his subterranean identity – both racial and sexual – is in books with spaceships on the cover. Far in their future, in a world threatened by the mysterious Invaders, poet Rydra Wong discovers an alien language - Babel-17 - and sets out on a quest that will either save civilisation, or destroy it.

The market has plenty to offer keen bargain hunters

There’s nothing nicer on a Sunday morning than a stroll through the stalls of the Rotary Community Market.

W

hether you’re in search of something in particular or just keen to browse, the market offers a variety of stalls for market lovers. The Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala Community Market is held on the third Sunday of each month at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds. The market was established in 1989, initially at the old drive-in theatre Yarrawonga before a move to a temporary home in a Belmore Street car park and then to the grounds of the Yarrawonga Primary School.

Held at the school until 2000, the market was then moved to its present home at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds which provides ample space, facilities and parking to accommodate the popular event. The market features upward of 120 stalls including clothes, fruit and vegies, jocks and socks, preserves, craft work, toys, plants, tools, homewares, fishing gear, bric a brac, second-hand gear and garden ornaments. There’s also plenty of goodies to eat and drink and entertainment for the kids. The market runs from 8am to midday, the third Sunday of each month. Entry by gold coin donation and ample parking through the Gilmore Street and Dunlop Street entrance.

Matt’s musical marathon Yarrawonga-born ABC Shepparton breakfast radio host, Matt Dowling is preparing for the role of his life, as Professor Henry Higgins, in Shepparton Theatre Arts Group’s production of My Fair Lady.

A

s the leading man, Dowling is on stage for 11 of the 18 scenes of the Lerner and Loewe musical and for the past three months he’s been busy learning six songs and memorizing hundreds of lines. “I’ve never trained for a marathon but in terms of intensity it feels like much the same sort of preparation,” Dowling says “It’s hours and hours of work, day in and day out and you really have to absorb yourself in what you are doing. “On the positive side it’s also a lot of fun and a huge learning curve for me.” Dowling was born in Yarrawonga and spent his early years Yarrawonga’s Matt Dowling will take to the stage for the Shepparton Theatre Arts on the family farm between Savernake and Berrigan. parents, Bill and Marj Dowling, now live in Yarrawonga. A career in journalism, including eight years with National Nine News, curtailed Dowling’s early theatrical pursuits, but in recent years he has returned to the stage with STAG and last year won a Georgy Theatre Award for best male actor for his role in the play A Village Wooing. His co-star in that play, Nicky Pummeroy, a four-time Georgy winner, will play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. My Fair Lady features a cast and ensemble of more than 40 performers who’ll perform such timeless classics as Wouldn’t It Be Luverley, I Could Have Danced All Night and Get Me To The Church On Time. My Fair Lady will be performed at WestSide Performing Arts Centre, Mooroopna from 4 – 12 July. The season includes five evening performances and three matinees.
