Not every venue we play this time around can be exactly like that, but it’s the feeling I want to create – to take the show back to its roots.” The show is not a cut-and-paste biography of Lennon or an emulation of the original recordings. On stage, with shadows from the lighting arrangement fluttering over his face as he explores the essence of the man through song and spoken word, Waters becomes synonymous with Lennon. He shies away from imitating the artist, but so emotive is his performance, it lulls the audience into believing anything is possible. It’s part concert and part biog-

n 1992, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta took to the small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Sydney with their debut production of “Looking Through A Glass Onion”. What was initially a one week booking quickly sold out and extended into a six week, sell out season. Thus the original seed of “Looking For A Glass Onion” was born. Fast forward, after a massive 137-date tour in 2010/2011/2012, John and Stewart are returning with their “up close and personal” two man show in 2014 while gearing up toward launching the production off Broadway in New York. Looking Through A Glass Onion will feature at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, February 8, 2014. “It began its life as a small venue piece with just Stewart D’Arrietta and myself on stage at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney. I made my entrance from a kitchen and climbed over patron’s laps to scramble onto a tiny raised platform in the corner of the room,” Waters said. “The audience and I were inescapably intimate with each other from

raphy, though it doesn’t seek to tell the full story of Lennon’s life. “Rather than to impersonate, I wanted to evoke his honesty, bitter-sweet humour, self criticism and disdain for pretentiousness and pomposity,” said Waters. “The song Glass Onion was John Lennon’s postscript to The Beatles. It had such a strong image of crystal ball-gazing and peeling away the layers that it inspired the format for this show – a kaleidoscope collage of song, word, emotion and image,” said D’Arrietta. For the audience this is either an emotional trip down memory lane or a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icons of our time. With 31 songs performed including to name a few, ‘A Day in the Life’, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds’, ‘Woman’, ‘Jealous Guy’, ‘Imagine’ and more, this is a show for all ages. Looking Through A Glass Onion will feature at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 8pm. Tickets are now on sale, adults $55, concession $50, student (16-25 with valid ID) $50. For more information or to buy tickets go to www.wangaratta pac. com.au

ased on the real-life relationship of composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, a wisecracking composer finds a new, off-beat lyricist. When Vernon Gersch invites Sonia Walsk to his luxury Manhattan apartment the meeting uncovers two very different personalities. He is aloof and focused, while she is disorganised and distracted – but Vernon has already written music to one of Sonia's lyrics, so they decide to forge ahead. To get to know each other better on a professional level, Vernon and Sonia go out to dinner. But, hearing one of their songs played at the venue that night, the couple admit to their deeper feelings and embark on a relationship. After living and working together, the romance soon hits trouble. They're Playing Our Song features two star characters (played by husband and wife Scott Irwin and Danielle Barnes) singing such memorable songs as I Still Believe in Love, If He Really Knew Me, They’re Playing Our Song and Fallin’, making this romantic comedy an unforgettable evening of stellar

Chasing the mighty Murray Cod
With Murray Cod season kicking off on December 1, many anglers will be taking to the water to try their luck.
T
he summer months will see fishermen and women from near and far take to the banks and the water of the Murray River to try to snare one of the elusive beauties. Of all of Australia's freshwater fish the Murray Cod remains one of the most challenging. Murray Cod are the largest freshwater fish in Australia and one of the largest in the world, the record Murray Cod recorded was over 1.8 metres (6ft) and weighed approximately 113 kilograms (250lb). Murray cod populations have declined severely since European colonisation of Australia due to a number of causes including severe overfishing including large commercial operations, the introduction of
European Carp, river regulation and habitat degradation and are now a listed threatened species. Strict fishing regulations including bag limits, closed seasons and a greater emphasis on catch and release by anglers have seen their numbers remain steady in recent years which augurs well for future generations yet to experience these mighty predators. Lake Mulwala is recognised as one of the best locations to catch a Murray Cod and from December 1 at the opening of the season until August 31 when the season closes there is a steady stream of anglers testing their skills from the bank or in a tinny hopeful they too can have their picture taken with a mighty Murray Cod. Fishing the Murray River The Murray River is all New South Wales water and NSW regulations apply. A NSW fishing licence is required when fishing in the river, even if the angler is standing on the Victorian bank.

Am I ever gonna see your face again? The Angels will celebrate their 40th anniversary at the Mulwala Water Ski Club’s Red Hot Summer Tour in January. And yes, I heard that collective gasp. Forty years.
australia day weekend
T
heir time together spans two generations and it is a testament to the band that their music is as relevant today as it was in the early 70s. The Angels is an Australian rock band that was formed in Adelaide in 1974 by two brothers John and Rick Brewster and Belfast-born Bernard ‘Doc’ Neeson and in 1975, on the recommendation of Bon Scott and Malcolm Young from AC/DC, the band was offered a recording deal with the Albert label. The Angels' first single, Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, was released in April 1976 and amazingly did not even enter the charts – it is now considered one of the iconic Australian rock songs. The Yarrawonga Chronicle spoke with founding band member John Brewster on The Angels past, present and future and the origins of the chant that is synonymous with the band’s first single. “The band cannot wait to begin the Red Hot Summer Tour,” John said. “We were in Mulwala years ago and it will be great to finally get back there and see if anything has changed.” Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets will be fronting for The Angels, in place of Doc Neeson who was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in January of this year. “Dave has been with us for a while now and he is a terrific guy,” John said. “He is well and truly part of the band and has a huge musical talent. “His vocals suit all our old repertoire and he has made a fantastic contribution to our new music. “However Doc is always in our thoughts, on stage and off.” The Angels will be releasing a new album, Talk the Talk, in January 2014 and will throw in some of their new songs during the Red Hot Summer Tour. “Don’t worry though, we will still play all our old hits, we love them just as much as the audience,” John said.
The Angels featuring Dave Gleeson.
John’s son Sam is playing bass guitar, taking over the mantle when longtime band member Chris Bailey died of cancer in April this year. “It was a huge blow to all of us when Chris died. “Thankfully he was well enough to play on five tracks of our new album and the album will be dedicated to him,” John said. Bands including Guns ‘n’ Roses, Pearl Jam and Nirvana have cited The Angels as a huge influence on their musical styles. “Performing in the USA was massive for us and we were very popular in Seattle in particular,” John said. “It is humbling to know that we have influenced such great musical talent. “In our early years we played with Chuck Berry and toured with David Bowie, two incredibly different performers. “Chuck had no rehearsals and we just had to show up and watch
his left foot which stamped when he wanted us to start playing and stamped again when he wanted us to stop. “David Bowie was a different experience altogether. “He was an absolute gentleman and we had dinner with him before the show each night. “During a break in the tour The Angels did a gig on our own and halfway through we saw David standing in the audience, he had come to hear us perform, it was amazing.” And the origins of the chant – no way, get f*****, f*** off? “The first time we heard it was in Mt Isa,” John said. “We had stopped playing the song for a couple of years and at this particular gig there had been a number of encores and we were running out of things to play so we decided to play Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again.
“It was amazing to hear the audience yell the chant back to us, at first we didn’t know what was going on. “Then, in a time when there was no Youtube, Facebook or internet, somehow, everywhere we went, when we played that song, the audience would chant that response. “The bush telegraph must have been working pretty well.” The Angels will be appearing live at the Mulwala Water Ski Club’s Red Hot Summer Tour, along with
Suzi Quatro, The Black Sorrows, Russell Morris and Shannon Noll on Australia Day weekend 2014. General admission tickets for the Red Hot Summer Tour at Mulwala
Water Ski Club are now on sale for $79.90 plus booking fee for
