BACK HOME ON THE Olympian giving unique attraction its best ‘shot’

Thanks to Australia’s well received vaccination role out many local tourism businesses are brushing the Covid pandemic dust off their shoulders, rolling up their sleeves and opening up their doors to visitors. Once such business is a unique custom built shooting range just out of Mulwala owned and run by local dual Olympian and word champion James Willett. Since his return from the Tokyo Olympics James has set his sights on turning his world class shooting range into a unique tourism drawcard.

Back home on the range Olympian giving unique attraction its best ‘shot’ Since his return from the Tokyo Olympics local World Champion shooter James Willett has set his sights on turning his world class shooting range into a unique tourism drawcard. The Shelford Shooting range is world class and is arguably the best facility of its kind in Australia and since returning from Tokyo Willett has started hosting more visitors and groups to the range. The range, situated just 10-minute drive out of Mulwala alongside Lake Mulwala, was upgraded just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and as a result has been unable to reach its potential of attracting visitors and groups. “It was a brilliant project taking five months to complete and we had lot of support, but then COVID hit, and we couldn’t open the facility to the public,” Willett said. The silver lining for the world champion was he was able to continue on his preparation for the Olympics at the custom-built range designed to attract professional athletes in the sport from all over Australia to train. “I have had top line competitors and fellow Olympians use the range and they have all praised it but it’s time to further share my experience and

require a licence, you just have to be over the age of 12. “I also offer coaching to help new shooters practise and train in clay target shooting, I intend to run some coaching events on the range also,” Willett said.

SILO ART AND FARM GATE TRAIL

A passion for fine wines The north-east Victorian region boasts consistent seasonal rainfalls and temperatures bringing with it an abundance of farm gate businesses with a passion of delivering fresh produce from paddock to plate. One such business is Monichino Estate Wines which forms a big part of Sun Country Farm Gate Trail (see map on next pages). Founder Carlo Monichino was a true pioneer of winemaking in the Gouburn Valley Wine Region. He first migrated to Australia from the renowned wine growing region of Piedmonte in the Asti region form Northern Italy in 1949, when he was just 18 years old. In 1962, his dream came to fruition at a property in Katunga where Carlo developed not only a vineyard, but a winery as well and created his well-known brand of unique Goulburn Valley Wines. After years of hard work and dedication Carlo and Margaret opened the original cellar door and over the years they continued to grow new varieties and innovate. Monichino Estate Wines now has 25 hectares under vines and currently produces approximately 10,000 dozen wines and in 2000 the winery had expanded enough to open a new cellar door big enough to hold the 27 varieties of wine made at the winery. The Winery is very much a family business with Anna Sergi (pictured) managing the sales and marketing with brother Terry as the Chief Winemaker.

The hidden treasures within Urana Courthouse Museum Nothing quite beats a museum with a mystery and that is exactly what the historic Urana Courthouse offers. Built in 1879, the original courtroom is impressive in size and retains many features from its days as a court. Also located inside are many displays of local history and culture, from prefederation to today. Learn about the fascinating story of Urana’s own Freddie Fox who made 350 hats for the Queen over 35 years, and also for many members of the royal family. A number of his hats are on display inside the museum. One of the most intriguing features in the museum is the Samurai coat of armour found in a Morundah tip and given to the museum to display. Dated between 1600-1868, no one quite knows how the armour ended up in regional NSW. The charming town of Urana is an easy drive from several regional centres including Albury Wodonga

Chrystie’s Classics and Collectables Museum Tocumwal Car enthusiasts are sure to love the lifetime collection of amazing treasures at Chrystie’s Classics and Collectables Museum.

From an old logging truck to working vintage cars, farming equipment, classic caravans, and collectables, George Chrystie has one of the finest collections in the Riverina. The oldest car is a 1922 T model Ford, unrestored with its original key, which has a 1930 caravan that goes on the back. The museum also includes 80 chainsaws, with the earliest dating to 1926, as well as fuel bowsers, kitchen memorabilia and crockery, including a dinner set for Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1897.

Burke Museum Beechworth Originally built as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857, the museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke, the famous explorer and former Beechworth Superintendent of Police.

Yarrawonga-Mulwala Pioneer Museum The Pioneer Museum features one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibits of early pioneering days in Australia. From flying machines to wool presses, to bicycles, homewares and trinkets of yesteryear, there is something for everyone to enjoy. A highlight of the museum’s collection is a biplane built by local pioneer aviator Douglas Sloane in 1913. It is one of very few designs from the early period of aviation in Australia to have survived to the present day.

The award-winning museum boasts a fascinating and historically significant collection of more than 30,000 individual items, many dating back more than 150 years. The collection includes the significant R.E. Johns collection of Aboriginal weapons and tools, a large collection of 19th Century native animal and birdlife taxidermy, significant Gold Rush era artefacts, as well as a new section of the museum, the Ned Kelly Vault. The Ned Kelly collection is the most comprehensive of its type in regional Australia and includes the original death mask of Ned Kelly and numerous original items relating to the bushranger and his gang.

Children’s treasure hunt activities are available with some hands-on items to try out as well. They can have a go at gold panning and keep any gold that they discover.

Numurkah Society Museum Located in the old bank building on Melville Street, Numurkah Society Museum exhibits an array everything from the early settlers to the town’s sporting legends. Explore the old police cells, historic isolation ward, railway station and old machinery exhibits. As the southern gateway to the region known as Sun Country on the Murray, Numurkah and the surrounding district enjoys one of the best temperate climates Australia has to offer with a thriving agricultural area, as well as a food lovers’ paradise. Open Wednesday and Sunday afternoon, or by appointment (03) 5862 1768.

El Dorado Museum A short drive from Wangaratta or Beechworth, the El Dorado Museum offers an opportunity to step back in time to view life as it was from the time of discovery of gold. With displays of mining, farming and social history of the region, the museum holds an interesting and diverse collection reflecting the life and times of the region from 1850s to the 1950s.

Waterfalls

The regions best hidden gems The northeast, although not swimming in a vast amount of waterfalls, has a number of spectacular sites for visitors and locals alike to explore. Start over in Beechworth before making your way to Yackandandah then head over to Cheshunt and Warby Ovens National Park to view some of the breathtaking water views our region has to offer.

The regions best hidden gems Baranduda Waterfall This waterfall which is located off Ewarts Road Yackandandah is a beautiful little waterfall that you can get right up close to. After rain particularly it is known to look spectacular and is around 20 metres from the road however it is not visible from it. In an amazing location and only a short walk from where you will park your car, make sure to bring decent shoes as it is a little slippery under foot and good shoes are needed to get to the top.

Woolshed Falls, just out of Beechworth is a spectacular stream with many visitors all throughout the year. Photo: Explore Beechworth.

Woolshed Falls

Paradise Falls

Woolshed Falls is a popular destination for visitors and locals to the region alike.

This waterfall situated on Paradise Falls Road Cheshunt is absolutely stunning with many reviews preparing people to be amazed.

A ten-minute drive north from Beechworth, you can view the cascading falls, enjoy a picnic or take a walk around the gold workings. There is also an observation deck which provides you full views of the falls as well as the valley below. There are also shallow rock pools that you can dip your feet into but be very careful on the rocks as they are slippery all year round. No matter the time of year, Woolshed Falls is a gorgeous waterfall to visit in a beautiful location which is great for a family walk/exploration and rock scrambling whilst also taking several photos amongst the rocks.

The Baranduda Waterfall is one of the north east’s best kept secrets with visitors able to get close to the water. Photo: Stu McQuade.

The falls, although often only a trickle of water falling down except after heavy rainfalls, it is worth the drive just for the experience alone. The falls which come down from the cliff of a large wave like cave structure is a very peaceful and interesting place with lovely views and a nice hike to reach the main aspect.

Briens Gorge and Pine Gully Falls – Warby-Ovens National Park Both the Briens Gorge and Pine Gully Falls are situated in the Warby – Ovens National Park, located between the Victorian Alps and the Murray Valley.

Not a vast amount of water trickles along here however it does look spectacular with a deep gorge.

Mount Buffalo Mount Buffalo has a number of picturesque waterfalls that are part of the mountain’s most popular attractions.

Briens Gorge is one of the most interesting waterfalls with the water leading from the base to underground. Photo: Ben Appleford. The surroundings of Briens Gorge are lovely with interesting rocks and the water is unique, mysterious and enchanting as no stream of water leads from the base as it goes underground. The Gorge is an easy place to get to.

Crystal Brook Falls is one of the most well-known and visited as it falls around 200 metres from The Gorge rim and can be viewed from a section of the Gorge Heritage walking track. Ladies Bath Falls which is at the base of Mount Buffalo is also a favourite location to cool off on a hot summers day with Eurobin Falls also following the track past the Ladies Bath pool. Eurobin Falls has viewing areas to see bother the lower and upper part of the falls.

The water can be seen running between the rocks.

Approximately 10km up the Mount Buffalo Road on the right is the the Rollason’s Falls track which is a beautiful walk down to the two waterfalls. At the bottom you will be able to admire or have a swim in the two deep and cool pools at the base of each waterfall.

Pine Gully Falls, a short distance away is a nice nature walk with great views and plenty of wildlife.

The last of the water areas is Dickson’s Falls which is located on the eastern side of Buffalo.

Although no water streaming, it can be seen running between the rocks. This is a picturesque place to unwind, get in touch with nature, explore and enjoy scenery.
