GRADUATING C L ASSES OF 2023
Shepparton Christian College Year 12 students Maddie King and Christiaan Buys.
Life after secondary school Graduation is a time of celebration and reflection of previous school years. Your Year 12 cohort becomes your family, with those bonds lasting a lifetime. That sentiment is especially true for the 12, Year 12 students at Shepparton Christian College. Maddie King and Christiaan Buys have been at the school since they were in Prep, and now, in their final two weeks of classes, they are gearing up for a life outside their little school. “I’m excited for a new chapter, to close this one and open a new one,” Maddie said. This year, she has been completing a Cert 3 at GOTAFE in make-up as part of her VCE Vocational Major requirements. Instead of completing exams, she will finish her course requirements within the next two weeks. “Next year, I’ll be moving to Melbourne, and I’ll be a dancer,” she said.

GRADUATION November 2023
“I’ll be doing a professional dance course at Transit Dance, which I’ll finish with an elite performance diploma.”
After graduation, Christiaan is planning to do biomedicine, hopefully at La Trobe University in Bendigo.
One of her favourite moments from this year was their school concert.
“I feel accomplished. I did everything that I wanted to do,” he said.
“We did a Disney mash-up and there were five Year 12s who joined in,” she said.
“All I need to do now is graduate and do my exams.”
“I think that’s the first time we have actually done something together at the school concert.” Christiaan has kept a very busy schedule this year as the school captain, alongside a full load of subjects, including his favourite maths methods. With exams on the horizon, he feels prepared to take on this final challenge. “It’s pretty daunting,” he said. “They hold so much weight these exams for your school years, but I think I’ve been pretty smart and consistent throughout the year.”
After the exam period, Christiaan is excited to relax and take a break. “My time at school has been very humble and simple,” he said. “Growing up in such a small school, you find that the connections and the relationships you make really matter.” Maddie is excited to start the rest of her life, but will still miss her little family at the Christian College. She also shared her advice for next year’s cohort. “Enjoy it, because it’s gonna be over before you know it,” she said.
GRADUATES OF GRADUATES OF Building a positive and vibrant school culture
2023
Building on the success of our first year at GSSC was the aim in 2023 and our senior students’ contribution to that goal cannot be underestimated. While much of our first year was spent establishing ourselves as a school for community, our second year has seen us go from strength-to-strength in developing an inclusive learning environment and a sense of belonging for every student. Much of this can be attributed to our 2023 Year 12 cohort, who have introduced events that encourage connectedness across year levels, including GSSC’s got Talent and Spirit Week. I am sure these will become an annual feature on the GSSC calendar and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for our third year. Thank you to our 2023 Year 12s, for the way in which you have conducted yourselves, represented your school with pride and supported each other and your peers along the journey. You should be proud of your efforts, as we are of you. We know you all have a bright future ahead.
- Executive Principal Barbara O’Brien
Writing another page of the GSSC story Our Year 12 experience has been one that has been enriched by the privilege to be Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s 2023 College Captains. As leaders, we have carried on old traditions and built new ones that we hope will live on at GSSC. A key goal among our team this year has been to bring everyone together and to establish a positive and vibrant school community where everyone is welcomed, respected and valued. Year on year we write another page of the GSSC story and strengthen our foundations to pave the way for the next generation. We feel honoured to have been part of the 2023 story and through the responsibility of Captaincy, we hope we have had positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people here - our friends, our peers and our future leaders.

My plans for the future consist of taking a gap year and learning the mechanics side of my family business, before heading into a business and accounting course at La Trobe, Bendigo. The most memorable day of my year 12 year was the day my math methods class finished with content, and we had a period where we played Mario kart (I won). My only advice for year 12 is I know that’s it’s tough, both mentally and physically draining, but this is your last year you’ll ever have at high school, give it your all, but also don’t forget to just have fun.
Next year I plan to begin a Bachelor of Nursing. There have been many memorable moments, but I would say that it was the simple moments that were my favourite, such as recess & lunchtimes with my friends, my double studio class on Friday mornings and the multiple events that were held for us. Upcoming year 12s, while it’s important that you dedicate yourself to your studies don’t let it consume you! My biggest piece of advice for you is to look after yourself. Don’t cut out the things you enjoy, balance is key. Things can be really tough at some points throughout the year so never hesitate to reach out to someone if you’re struggling. Remember to take each day as it comes. And believe me, the year will go past very quickly, so enjoy it while you can.
Aspiration • Integrity • Respect • Responsibility

GRADUATING C L ASSES OF 2023
Goodbye, high school, hello university As classes come to an end and exam seasons go into full swing, many Year 12 students are thinking towards the future and what their lives will be like outside of the school gates. At Greater Shepparton Secondary College, Year 12 students Rajbir Gakhal and Nida Bangash are in the final stretch, with exams about to begin and graduation on the horizon. Rajbir says he’s ready to take on the exam season. “I’ve been constantly flat out studying to prepare for my exams,” he said. “It’s been stressful, yeah, but I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully, everything goes as planned.” Nida feels nervous about moving on from the school, but is still excited to see it through. “It’s scary, but at the same time, we have been preparing since Year 7 for it, so it’s kind of scary and exciting at the same time,” she said.
Greater Shepparton College Year 12 student Rajbir Gakhal.
This year, both Rajbir and Nida took on an extra leadership roles as house captains, with Rajbir leading Goulburn house. “I was also involved in the leadership team as well, so I’ve gone to a lot of meetings, a few with the principal Mrs O’Brien,” Rajbir said. “It was a good way to connect with different people, getting to know different people and just connecting with all of them. “And then, of course, being able to add in my own ideas, being able to pull up ideas of mine, my friends, like other people from the school, it was great. Nida loved being the house captain for Loddon house as well. “Like making friends with all the other house captains and all the other people who had positions in school leadership positions. It was a fun experience,” Nida said. After exams are done and dusted, Rajbir said he planned to study a Bachelor of Law, with his top choices being Monash University and La Trobe University, while Nida is tossing up between undertaking a teaching degree here at La Trobe University Shepparton or taking a gap year. Both students are excited to take the next step and start their adult lives, but will also miss the school they’ve called home. “I’m pretty excited. Like, of course, it was what, 13 years of my life in school, getting out of the cycle that’s going to change a lot, but yeah, I’m looking forward to it,” Rajbir said. “I love it here. It’s kind of like exciting, but at the same time, I don’t want to leave,” Nida said.

Congratulations to the class of 2023! I commend students, teachers and parents for their hard work and commitment to learning. Graduating school is an exciting time and is the start of a new chapter filled with adventure. I encourage students to pick up a copy of my School Leavers Guide available on my website or at my office. The guide covers a range of easy-to-read information including education and training opportunities, financial assistance options, mental health support as well as helpful material like how to apply for a Medicare card.
Wishing you all the best for what lies ahead.
