HARVEST FEST 2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE MAXIMISE YOUR VEGIE GARDEN AS WE EMBRACE THE TREND OF GROWING OUR OWN PRODUCE, GREENHOUSES HAVE INCREASINGLY BECOME A FIXTURE IN AUSTRALIAN BACKYARDS. For Rae Grant, manager of Geelongbased business Grow-Fresh Greenhouses — which offers a range of poly carbonate greenhouses and glasshouses — the benefits of a greenhouse are endless. “Greenhouses will allow you to grow things out of seasons, extend growing seasons and let you get an early start,” she said. “Our greenhouses are UK design, so they’re designed for harsh conditions and are really good in high winds and bad weather.”

Whether its tomatoes, herbs or capsicums, Rae said the quality of home-grown produce was evident in the final product and that more awareness regarding pesticides and stored produce had prompted people to grow their own fruits and vegetables. No matter the motivation behind purchasing a greenhouse, Rae said there were a number of options. “We have everything from small backyard ones up to greenhouses for the bigger hobby farmers, so there’s a range for everyone,” she said.

HARDY BREED ON SHOW

Four breeders have joined forces to present information on behalf of the Australian Wiltshire Horn Sheepbreeders’ Association, which has membership almost Australiawide.

South Gippsland breeder Jill Noble said sheep, lambs and rams would be on display in undercover pens. Visitors will have the chance to pat the animals, information and brochures about the breed and association will be available, and some sheep will be for sale. Jill said the easy-care breed shed its wool, was hardy and highly resistant to worms and was suitable for hilly and wet terrain.

FOOD-FRESH AND ENVIRO-FRIENDLY Little Bumble’s beeswax food wraps keep food fresh for longer and reduce household plastic waste. While on maternity leave, business director Laura Eddington came up with the ingenious idea to create the beeswax wraps, stemming from her farming upbringing. “While on maternity leave from science teaching, I became frustrated at the food wastage and plastic pollution that was occurring in my home,” she said. “Being raised on land and always striving to be more sustainable, I began to research an alternative to plastic wrap, snap lock bags and plastic containers. “After investing in the beeswax food wraps already on the market I was very disappointed by their performance. FOR A GREAT DAY OUT!

The Centre of Drone Excellence is an initiative of Lardner Park — home of Harvest Fest — and The Institute for Drone Technology, and will conduct two drone demonstrations at 11 am on Saturday, November 10 and Sunday, November 11. The centre’s base at Lardner Park is a permanently located hub for drone technology in the Asia Pacific region and its role is to champion the future of the drone industry. The centre aims to create best practices in drone technology, education and commercial application and circulate these to the public, business, academia and international communities.

New advancements in technology are seeing drones impacting the way organisations conduct business and drones can help drastically improve the efficiency and safety in day-to-day operations across numerous sectors including infrastructure, maritime, agriculture, construction and mining. Drones can assist with surveying; confined space inspections; provide real-time aerial footage and 3D maps of sites; help inspect overhead cranes, towers and roofs of tall buildings; improve road safety on sites by monitoring traffic, road conditions and hazards; and in various agriculture applications such as crop analysis and weed detection. A CURE FOR KITCHEN BOREDOM Delectable cured meats will be on the menu at Harvest Fest, with cooking demonstrations showcasing how to bring the technique into the home kitchen. Delivered by String and Salt’s Dave Cann, who owns the business with his wife Michelle, the demonstrations will take crowds through the whole curing process, from start to finish. Having opened the business in 2014, the couple’s cooking school has focused on giving home cooks the confidence to try new techniques at home.

NOSE-TO-TAIL APPROACH The ever-trendy nose-to-tail approach of cooking will be highlighted by West Gippsland chef Trevor Perkins, who is a feature chef at Harvest Fest. He is the chef-owner of Hogget Kitchen, a warm and inviting restaurant set in a beautiful rural location which provides “a very sharing and enjoyable dining experience eating produce grown on the farm”. “At Harvest Fest we will be focusing on beef, lamb and pork (for the cooking demonstrations) and we will talk about the animal, how we process it and how we cook it, even the way it is broken down with that nose-totail approach,” Trevor said. “It’s actually a lengthy process breaking the animal down, and with all the parts of the animal you can use it can take four to six weeks as we move through the different cuts, so it is great to give people insight into this.” Trevor said West Gippsland had some fantastic produce and he was looking forward to showcasing this through his demonstrations. “(At Hogget Kitchen) we change the menu every day prior to service so it is all completely seasonal,” he said. “Everything is grown and sourced locally so it really represents our region.” Chef Trevor Perkins will provide cooking demonstrations on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm.

“We’ll show everything from the cleaning of the whole muscle and preparation to the curing process and how to go about packing and netting for curing and storage,” Dave said. “It’ll be good, simple techniques that can be implemented at home. Hopefully it will show everyone that curing is something not to be scared of.” With a rise in curing meats including salami-making driving interest in the technique, curiosity in other cured meats including prosciutto, pancetta and copicola had also increased. “The dry curing process is certainly growing, there’s been quite a substantial increase in interest,” Dave said. “The concept of making things from scratch at home is always fantastic and hopefully we’ll show some things that people can put in place.” Providing meat curing demonstrations is Dave Cann on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.

See feature butcher Joel Young in action.

SHARING THEIR PADDOCK-TO-PLATE PHILOSOPHY Award-winning sausages will be on show at Harvest Fest, as Traralgon butchery 3Js Butchers displays its paddock-to-plate culinary talents. Started by Joel Young and John Hardman seven years ago, the butchers pride themselves on working with local farmers to deliver quality produce. “We are truly paddock-to-plate, which means everything is taken from a whole carcase,” Joel said. “We work with local farmers, the closest just 15 minutes down the road and the furthest about 40 minutes away.” Priding themselves on their sausages, the butchers have been recognised with a number of awards throughout the years. Awarded the best lamb sausages in Australia and Gippsland’s best beef sausages and pork sausages, Joel said there would be no shortage of tasty treats to sample on the day. Putting their paddock-to-plate approach at the forefront through Harvest Fest, Joel said they would be showcasing the process of breaking down a carcase and turning it into sausages each day of the three-day event, with lamb, beef and pork the proteins of choice. Joel Young will provide butchery demonstrations on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 am and sausage making demonstrations on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at noon. HARVEST FEST 2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE HAVE YOU GOT YOUR QUAD BIKE ROLLOVER REBATE? More than 4000 employers have taken advantage of the Victorian Government’s quad bike safety rebate and fitted rollover protection to their quad bike, or purchased a more terrainappropriate vehicle. Rollover protection devices (RPDs) are designed to save lives. It’s indisputable that quad bikes are involved in more deaths on Australian farms than any other piece of machinery, mostly due to quad bikes rolling over, crushing or asphyxiating the rider. According to Safe Work Australia, there have been 10 quad bike-related fatalities last year alone. A rollover can happen suddenly and in seemingly harmless conditions — even for experienced farmers. Many farmers work in isolation so quad bike incidents can go unnoticed for hours, or days — by

which time help may be too late. The most tragic part is that quad bike deaths are preventable. It starts with assessing your risk of rollover and taking active steps to prevent it. ASSESS YOUR RISK OF ROLLOVER WorkSafe has created an online risk assessment tool to help employers assess the risk of quad bike rollover on their farms. The tool looks at common tasks and the different types of farming terrain in order to determine the level of risk. Where there is a risk, WorkSafe requires employers to control the risk so far as is reasonably practicable; this usually means fitting rollover protection, eliminating the task or using an alternative vehicle. Otherwise they may be issued with an improvement notice

for breaching the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Who? Eligible employers need to:

If you are considering controlling the risk by installing rollover protection or buying an alternative vehicle, you can apply for the rebate to help offset the cost.

HARVEST FEST 2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE ESSENTIAL SHEEP FACTS Part-time farmers Jill Noble and Gary Tie will outline their experiences with establishing their flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep on their 62 ha South Gippsland property, at Harvest Fest. Hallston Valley Farm has been developed by the couple in the past three years and is home to a flock of 120 sheep, along with chooks, a largescale vegetable garden and orchard of 80 fruit trees. Jill said the information session would cover the essentials they had learned to help fast-track the process for others looking to own and keep sheep. The broad overview will include a hoof

trimming demonstration, an explanation of the life cycle of sheep and information about pasture management and rotational grazing to support not only the health of the animal, but soil structure and fertility. Jill said the couple’s agricultural background prompted them to expand from their Melbourne base and develop the property, which sells cut and packed meat direct to consumers, and stud sheep to commercial and hobby farmers. An information session will be provided by Jill Noble and Gary Tie on Friday at 2 pm.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF NATIVE PLANTS AND FOODS Native plants and native food plants can be easily incorporated into a kitchen garden with the right knowledge. Julie Weatherhead will provide expert information on this as a guest speaker for Harvest Fest. The owner of Peppermint Ridge Farm in West Gippsland, which provides Australian native food experiences, and author of Australian Native Food Harvest — a guide for the passionate cook and gardener — is well versed on the topic and also brings with her 20 years of experience as an environmental scientist and ecologist. “Most people don’t realise that native plants and food plants can fit in beautifully with existing gardens, that edible native plants can provide many 14

health benefits, that (the combination of natives and non-natives) can provide a natural pest control, and it can lead to increased habitat for native animals,” Julie said. WASTE WARRIOR SHARES HER MESSAGE With the top four plastic pollution items on beaches and oceans being disposable coffee cups, plastic bags, water bottles and straws, blogger Tammy Logan was equal parts disgusted by this fact and inspired to do something to change it. After watching a presentation at work about the global plastic problem, Tammy participated in the Plastic Free July Challenge in 2015 and the following year started her highly successful blog Gippsland Unwrapped, which is committed to the pursuit of plastic-free and waste-free living, and highlights how sustainable living can result in a more meaningful life and can be a strong force for positive change. Tammy — who is now a full-time blogger, sustainability educator, consultant and

speaker — is providing two talks on the Sunday of Harvest Fest as part of the Learning Series. She utilises her background working in the area of community engagement around sustainability issues and natural resource management, along with her Bachelor of Science, Conservation, Biology and Ecology and her knowledge from growing up on a dairy farm. After beginning her research on plasticfree living in 2015 she was inspired by the many benefits for the environment and also some additional side effect benefits of a more environmentallyfriendly way of life. “I didn’t want to be working so much all the time at the expense of my family and friends, I wanted more time

to focus on what is meaningful like relationships and the experiences — the things in life that make us really happy, not just being stuck on the hamster wheel,” she said. Tammy is looking forward to providing information to Harvest Fest visitors on why plastic usage and general waste is a problem and how people can make positive changes in their own lives. “I want to show people some examples of what I do so they can go home with concrete actions they can try themselves,” she said.

HARVEST FEST 2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE WEED CONTROL MAT THAT ALLOWS WATER AND AIR THROUGH BUT NOT WEEDS Weed control matting has come a long way, since the only option available was black plastic sheeting. The introduction of new fabric manufacturing techniques has enabled us to develop a weed control matting that will let the water and air pass through to the soil below, will last in Australia climatic conditions, while still stopping weed growth. For more than 16 years Weed Gunnel has been providing Australian farmers with a cost and labour efficient method of weed control. Weed Gunnel is a degradable and permeable weed mat, which has been specially treated to allow water and air

to pass through the matting, to keep the soil below healthy and aerobic. Weed Gunnel is also UV stabilised, to extend its lifespan. Weed Gunnel will last up to three years in the full sun, but with a covering of mulch will last up to eight years. The breakdown process does not leave any heavy metals or harmful trace elements in the soil and therefore is a Registered Allowed Input for organic growers (ACO452AI). We can also pre cut slits into Weed Gunnel matting, to make planting quicker and easier. The slits are cut to your specifications, to suit the crops you are growing. Now we would like to introduce our

customers to our range of Horticultural Fleece, which is an excellent ally for farmers in the defence against damage to crops from frost and weather extremes as well as against attack from insects. As Horticultural Fleece is available in different thickness, it can be used as a floating row cover or over tunnel structures. The fleece provides a physical barrier between the plants and the environment, protecting plants and dramatically reducing damage to crops, from temperature fluctuation, frost and insects. Using Horticultural Fleece helps to increase the quality and yield production, while at the same time

promoting stronger plant growth, earlier harvest and prolonging growing seasons. When used in conjunction with Weed Gunnel, you can minimize or even eliminate the use of chemicals on crops, whilst promoting stronger and cleaner crop yields, adding value to your produce. www.weedgunnel.com.au info@weedgunnel.com.au

HARVEST FEST 2018 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE A Federation Training ConservationLand-Management course in action.

TRAINING AND CAREERS IN GIPPSLAND In the lush rural region of Gippsland, careers in horticulture, agriculture, conservation and land management are plentiful — and Federation Training will shine a spotlight onto some of the training and career opportunities available locally. The business will have a stall at Harvest Fest to discuss the training opportunities it can offer, and by teaming up with GippsDairy and Flavorite Tomatoes can also discuss some related career opportunities that may arise for course graduates. While Federation Training offers more

than 100 courses, the most relevant to careers in Gippsland industries will be highlighted to provide more targeted information to patrons.

JOUSTING DISPLAY WILL THRILL AUDIENCE

“We also want to draw particular attention to free TAFE courses we can offer. Some of our horticulture and agriculture courses are being offered as part of a free government initiative,” Federation Training events co-ordinator Amy Oates said.

TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME TO MEDIEVAL DAYS AND ENJOY THE EXCITEMENT AND THRILL OF A JOUSTING COMPETITION. Hear the thunder of hooves and see wooden lances splinter as four armoured warriors face-off on their mighty steeds and battle it out for glory.

“The government is offering funding to cover the cost of course fees for some courses in 2019 for eligible students.”

Tournament X director Andrew McKinnon, who has been jousting for more than 10 years, said crowds would be left amazed by the spectacular display.

Your Local TAFE

“Jousting doesn’t happen every week … I think the average person is pretty amazed because it’s just incredible to see in person,” he said.

“Some people find it quite overwhelming. It’s just so unique, so evocative and very interesting.”

With current world jousting champion Phil Leitch and former world champions competing, the contest is expected to be fierce. While plenty of eyes would be on the main event, Andrew said there would also be plenty of time for spectators to get an up close look at the jousting equipment, with a tent displaying armour and lances. “We’ll be there to talk to people and answer questions,” he said. The jousting demonstration will take place on Saturday, November 10 at 1 pm, with the medieval tent open throughout Harvest Fest.
