Keeping kids active is key By Tyler Maher
After being isolated from their friends and teammates for large periods of last year, children across the region are keen to get back out on the ovals and courts this winter. Capturing that enthusiasm is a large focus for local clubs like Mooroopna Football Netball Club. Every player loves to sing the team song after a big win, but even more important than that is enjoying every minute of the season after not being able to participate in one last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. “Keeping kids active in sport is the most important part of what we do as football and netball clubs,” Mooroopna president Bill Dowling said. “We facilitate only part of the process but all clubs and community groups play a big part in providing a great environment and selection for whatever kids would like to do. “It is important to keep them active — and team sports are a great way to meet new friends, for both

Get involved: The Goulburn Valley Hockey Association welcomes players of all skill levels.
There has never been better time to hook into hockey. A year off the turf has brought about a stir in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association, with president Cameron Druitt hopeful of seeing participation soar in 2021. “Numbers are looking positive in the junior grades and we are returning to similar levels in the seniors,” he said. “That is not to say we don’t want to grow.” McEwen Reserve’s ‘Smurf turf’ — the sport’s home in Shepparton — is a fit-out as good as any in the state. The facility’s premium spectator shelter and seating has been bolstered by the recent addition of an audio system which is sure to build the competition’s atmosphere this season. “We think we offer a really welcoming environment at
. . . WE OFFER A FUN AND ENJOYABLE PLAYER EXPERIENCE — CAMERON DRUITT the Shepparton complex,” Druitt said. “People have missed community sport, and we offer a fun and enjoyable player experience.” Fun is at the heart of what the association strives to provide. According to Druitt, two unfair stigmas hang over hockey — that the sport is expensive and dangerous. Both are being extinguished at GVHA. “It is a safe sport. There is a perception that hockey is dangerous, which it isn’t,” he said. “We can help with providing equipment, there is no need for players to have a stick and shin guards right away. The purchase of a mouthguard is probably the only prerequisite.
“And expense-wise, we think we offer competitive fees compared to other sports. “All clubs are welcoming of new players at any age level — to play locally you don’t have to have playing experience necessarily.” As well as club level, the association’s representative pathway makes stepping up extremely accessible, especially for juniors. “The GVHA also offers representative opportunities which are open to anyone willing to try their hand,” Druitt said. “We’ve had first-year players come in and within a few months they are representing the association. “It can be a really significant and rewarding experience.”

Surely a hit By Aydin Payne
No matter your age or ability, tennis is the sport for you. That is the key message from Shepparton Junior Tennis Association president Geoff Akers after another successful summer of action. “There are so many benefits from playing tennis, but one of the key reasons is no matter your age or ability you can hit the court and play,” Akers said. “And it’s also a fairly simple and easy sport to play. All you need to have is a racquet and someone to play against. “You can play at all different standards and you don’t have to be a champion to enjoy it.” The SJTA runs eight competitions for players aged 17 and under, and the season begins in October and finishes up in March. Teams compete on Saturday mornings, however there is the odd occasion for Friday night tennis under lights. And if competing against budding juniors from other associations sounds enticing, there is the prospect of featuring in inter-regional matches.
Having a ball: Alex Whitlock.
Fenil Dom, Shepparton.
Last season there were 60 teams across all grades — and with 11 clubs in the association, ranging from Katandra West to Tatura, there is bound to be a place for new faces to join in. Akers encouraged any juniors and their parents who wanted to get involved to contact a local SJTA outfit. “For any youngsters looking to play, the best thing to do is get out and have a go,” he said. “And the best place to start is at your local club in the region. Get in contact with them and they will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.” Despite the season ending earlier this month, there will still be plenty of action on the
court throughout the winter months. Akers highlighted that development coaches would be available for juniors to further master their skills. “Although we have entered our off-season, we have a number of development coaches that will still provide coaching for juniors in winter,” he said. “These sessions are open for everyone and it doesn’t matter if you are just picking up a racquet for the first time or wanting to develop your skills for next season. “We are really lucky to have coaches like Luke Dixon, Mark Mills and Bruce Ferguson available for our local juniors. They have the best knowledge and are excellent teachers.”

want to play, some just want to give it a go,” he said. “It's quite a COVID-safe sport and it's indoors so we can play in any weather. “We can lend out 20 racquets to players who don't have one. “The association covers the cost of (the) night to give people the opportunity to try before you buy.” Mr Sumner encouraged parents to bring their kids down to have a crack, so SBA could get an idea of past experience, to help them fit players in the correct teams and competi-
tions. “The first Friday back after school holidays we get started again, the first night of competition,” he said. “We run through 19 rounds, going until almost the end of term three. “We don't run through school holidays.” Mr Sumner said the great thing about Friday night competitions, for parents, was it freed up the weekend. “It's very affordable, only $85, which covers registration with Badminton Victoria, court fees and shuttle use,” he said.

A new dawn is breaking with Goulburn Valley Suns. While it is still only in its f ledgling stages, success stories are being written like there’s no tomorrow at the region’s representative football club — a testament to its constantly evolving model aimed at giving players the best shot at reward. “The talent at the club is definitely there — take the Kuol brothers moving into the A-League as an example,” technical director Billy Marshall said. “For us, it is about making sure we have the tools available to get players to that level. “Looking at other clubs that have been around for a lot longer than us, we want to improvise off what they’ve done successfully and make ours a more successful model.” While the male presence is evident, the lack of women’s team could be misconstrued as a roadblock for the club. However, Marshall said introducing a female elite pathway was a gradual pro-
“We are definitely planning things — at the moment we have a committee on board looking at really driving women’s football forward in the region first, then looking at providing that elite pathway.” If the prestige of representing the region wasn’t enough, McEwen Reserve’s emerald green playing surfaces are a massive drawcard. “We are very lucky to have these facilities, and council does a fantastic job of keeping the fields preserved and ready to go,” Marshall said. “As a kid I grew up playing with jumpers for goals — and don’t get me wrong, I loved it — but the difference is chalk and cheese.” Away from football, the Suns’ culture is carefully manicured to teach its players values and life skills to assist them off the field. “Our motto is about when someone departs the club, they leave a better player and also a better person.” ● The Suns are looking for expressions of interest for players during its midseason intake, with signings welcome throughout April and May.

JUNIOR S P O R T Players welcome
By Tyler Maher The next stage of the junior sports season is right around the corner and ready to knock on the door. But leagues and teams across the AFL Goulburn Murray region are still searching for players to come forward and take part in proceedings. With team lists being finalised, now is the perfect time to join a club, even if that means looking a little further afield. Some clubs with an influx of potential junior football and netball players now have the unfortunate task of turning away players and their families because they are unable to accommodate the unexpectedly large numbers wanting to play. At the other end of the scale, some teams in the junior leagues are desperate for more players to ensure teams for all age levels are up and running when football and netball returns in 2021. With eight leagues encompassing over 70 clubs in the region offering junior competitions, there is no

Correct shoe fit important By Max Stainkamph
