BRADY THRELFALL

THE KEY IS

MOTIVATION By Geordie Cowan

Long-distance running is a challenging pursuit, pushing an individual’s physical and mental boundaries. It is not easy even for those who are used to it, like Echuca’s Brady Threlfall.

located in Bendigo... and there’s probably only two opportunities I get to race here a year,’’ Threlfall said.

The key to going through with the training, even when it’s cold, dark and wet, and to have goals, he said.

‘‘But at the same time I like that because I really get to listen to my body to decide how hard I’ll train.’’

‘‘When I go off in the morning you don’t want to do it, but then you remind yourself what your goals are and these are the things you need to do to achieve your goals,’’ he said.

Weather was always a hard one, but Threlfall said it could be overcome pretty quickly.

‘‘And at the same time I always remind myself that no-one is making me do it. ‘‘It’s a decision that I’ve made to do long-distance running and commit the hours and sometimes gruelling training into it.’’ Threlfall, 26, has gradually moved up through the ranks in the past few years and is now vying for titles at national level, predominantly at 10km and halfmarathon distances. Living in Echuca is another challenge for the primary school teacher, but it also gives him some advantages. ‘‘I don’t have any training partners here, my coach is

‘‘It’s a bit of a challenge, but once you get out the door and get going it disappears pretty quick,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s so many nights where you’ll be sitting on the couch and you just want to stay there, have a tub of ice-cream, stay under a blanket and watch the news, but then you get out there and you get wet in the first minute, but skin’s pretty waterproof and you don’t get any wetter and it doesn’t get any harder. ‘‘Every step you’re a step closer to coming home again. ‘‘So often I’ll go out the driveway hating running, but then you run back in the driveway and you’ve got a bit of a buzz and on a bit of a runner’s high, so it’s good.’’

“THERE ARE TIMES AS WELL WHEN YOUR MIND SAYS TO YOU, ‘THIS IS HARD’, OR ‘PULL OUT AND START WALKING’...” Threlfall, who averages more than 160km each week, said he focused on a range of things while running, depending on its purpose. An 8km ‘wake-up run’ is about getting it into his legs and will be accompanied by a podcast like Hamish and Andy. ‘‘(Then) I try not to think about running at all,’’ he said. ‘‘I often listen to podcasts where they’re interviewing good runners or nutritionists so I can learn while I’m running. ‘‘Sometimes I want to be totally distracted and not think about running at all, but then when we do the hard sessions... that’s when I’ll be totally pushing the pace and focusing on time. ‘‘There are times as well when your mind says to you, ‘this is hard’, or ‘pull out and start walking’, but you’ve got to put that to the side and just focus on getting to the next tree or the next corner, or pushing the next lap if you’re out at Moama oval.

‘‘It’s one of those sports where you know that if you have a crack, you will have a stage where your body’s squealing and your legs are yelling at you to just stop what you’re doing because it’s not fun.’’ Going into a race prepared plays a big part in overcoming those mental hurdles, Threlfall said. ‘‘So I know when these voices come in my head that my legs can back it up and I know I’m fit enough,’’ he said. ‘‘You remember the training you’ve done, the early nights you’ve had, the massages, all those people that have supported you along the way — just trying to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.’’ Threlfall also has some advice for those people who are preparing for a longdistance run. ‘‘Not to overthink it,’’ he said.

things, but you should just think about doing the little things that all add up to the big thing. ‘‘Everyone’s got a voice in their head that tries to shut them down, but you’ve just got to get rid of that and replace it with positive thoughts.’’ It was also important to maintain a balance and keep things in perspective, Threlfall said. ‘‘If you have to walk a bit in a fun run, it’s not the end of the world,’’ he said. ‘‘I think people hate it because they think they’ve got to go hard and get their heart rate up, sweating and they can’t breathe. ‘‘No wonder they don’t want to do it the next day. ‘‘Have fun with it. Go with your friends, get your kids on the bike.’’

‘‘So many people get scared if they’re running 10km... they compare it to

RYAN KERVIN

3 X IRONMAN By Luke McManus

Ironman triathlons are Ryan Kervin’s new-found passion. The euphoria experienced after finishing the gruelling 3.8 kilometre swim, 180 kilometre ride and 42 kilometre marathon motivates Kervin to sign up for the next one instantly.

‘‘For me, it was a stepping stone. Once I ticked the half (Ironman) off, the full distance would be the next goal.’’

Since the 2013 Melbourne Ironman, Kervin has ticked off another two races this year (Melbourne and Cairns) and remains hungry for more.

Ironman hopefuls are paid up and committed 12 months in advance, providing the athlete with a generous cooling off period and enough time to train.

Call him a glutton for punishment or just plain mad, Kervin’s desire to continue will see a fourth Ironman conquered in the not-so-distant future.

‘‘I think about it every day,’’ Kervin said.

Local Sport sat down with the 35-year-old to uncover why the endurance machine keeps going back for more. The trigger Kervin has always been an athlete.

The preparation

‘‘And once you start telling people about it, they’ll hold you to it and I’m too proud to back out.’’ Kervin’s preparation involves shorter but continuous week-long training blocks, consisting of three kilometres in the pool, about 100 kilometres on the bike and up to 30 kilometres on foot.

The “freak out” during the swim, the bash and crash from other swimmers, the threat of punctures and race-ending crashes during the ride are all behind him. Nothing pushes Kervin through the pain barrier more than hearing the bells, whistles and cheers from “everyone, not just your own supporters” along the run leg. Then the trackside commentators chime in: “Ryan Kervin, you’re just 40 minutes away from becoming an Ironman!” “Every step is painful and the brain is telling you to stop,” Kervin added. “I’ve waited 12 months for this so another forty minutes isn’t that bad.”

Running was (and still is) the discipline of choice within the former country footballer’s daily exercise routine.

There is almost a science behind Kervin’s approach: “recovery is more important than pushing yourself too much and having to sacrifice training the day after.’’

‘‘I can’t handle not exercising,’’ Kervin said.

The race

Kervin would not be a three-time Ironman triathlete without the vital support received from friends and family.

After hanging up the boots, Kervin longed for something to ‘‘work towards’’ and committed to a marathon.

Kervin longs for the security of the run because everything is in Kervin’s control and “I know nothing’s going to break down”

In particularly wife, Michelle, who always sheds a tear for her husband during races, and brother, Shane, who also competes.

That was soon achieved so Kervin tackled a Half Ironman, before his setting sights on the sport’s ultimate distance.

There is no lasting effect from the sleepless night before, nutrition and essentials are packed and the pre-race nerves are gone.

Kervin said that support, mixed with the “side-byside” camaraderie shared with his fellow competitors, was the key to going back for more above all else.

The support

BEHIND THE NEWS Meet two of the people bringing you your dose of local sport. Erin Lyons

A Carlton tragic since the day my dad took me to the 1997 M&M game between the Blues and Adelaide, I graduated from La Trobe University in March this year after completing a Bachelor of Journalism (Sport) degree. Previously I had completed work experience at the Herald and Weekly Times in Melbourne and was a freelance journalist for a music website.

Before landing this great role at the Riv in July, I was busy saving for my future with work in the retail and hospitality industries. I love all sports and apart from the mighty Blues am an enthusiastic follower of the Melbourne Vixens in the Trans Tasman Cup.

As a country boy born and bred I have been playing football since I could tie up my own boots. The only problem with covering EchucaMoama is there is so much happening I have not yet had the chance to join a local team. But I have high hopes of rolling my arm over this summer if there is a team that has a gap for an enthusiastic part timer who has to work weekends as well. I came to the Riv via a Media and Communications degree at Swinburne

University and many hours of work experience at media outlets such as 1116 SEN, Melbourne Stars T20 team, Nine News, the Herald Sun and Weekly Times newspapers. I’d also like to add I’m a passionate Collingwood supporter – isn’t everyone? – who has really enjoyed his first 12 months as a sports writer in this region, meeting a lot of great people.

DAMIEN COCKS

GREAT ALLROUNDER

By Geordie Cowan

You don’t have to know Damien Cocks well to understand that he loves sport. Damien has been involved in sport since a young age and he loves the camaraderie and sense of belonging he gains from being part of a team and a club.

On the field he has enjoyed playing with the EchucaMoama Rockets team this year and also plays with Echuca Cricket Club’s D grade team.

‘‘I just like to make new friends, helping out and being part of the club,’’ he said.

Those games helped in his second consecutive selection for a Special Olympics Victoria cricket team which competed at a national event in Adelaide.

Turning 38 in mid-September, Damien has enjoyed an active career and he is looking forward to it continuing as long as he can. He has been a fixture at Echuca Football-Netball Club on game days for almost 10 years, helping to set up the netball court and football oval, boundary umpiring the earlier football matches and also running water.

12 | Echuca Moama LOCAL SPORT 2014-15

‘‘I’m just an active terror. I love it,’’ Damien said. But it is in the Special Olympics arena where he has really flourished. Damien will compete at his fifth consecutive Special Olympics Australia National Games next month — a record that spans from 1998.

It will be the third separate sport he has been selected in for Victoria after competing in aquatics in the first national titles, before moving to athletics for the next three events. It was during this period that Damien went on to represent Australia at the 2007 Summer World Games in Shanghai, where he was also the face of the national team’s campaign. He was selected in the ten-pin bowling team for the October nationals and will compete at Point Cook. Damien is certainly not showing any signs of slowing down and he is sure to be a part of the district sporting scene for many years yet to come.

ECHUCA CRICKET CLUB GMC CHAMPION CLUB

Echuca Cricket Club

The Echuca Cricket Club was established in 1991 and has its home ground at Echuca’s main sporting venue, Victoria Park in Crofton Street. Season 2014/15 will see the club fielding senior teams in A, B, C and D grade, with junior teams in the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 competition. The club also runs the popular In2 Cricket program under the supervision of experienced senior cricketers. All senior teams made the finals last season with B, C and D grade all taking out their respective premierships, and we also won the T20 competition. Echuca achieved high levels of individual success across the club, with strong representation across all senior and junior representative sides as well as Taylor Beard winning the prestigious A grade cricketer of the year award. The club now boasts a top notch training facility, with 4 new synthetic nets, improved centre wicket area and an electronic scoreboard for playing days. Brendan Prendergast has been reappointed as senior coach for another season. There is very good mixture of youth and experience at the club and we look forward to another strong season on and off the field. The club is affiliated with Cricket Victoria and Cricket NSW which provides its members with pathways in both states.

CRICKET . .. G N I M O C S I N O S A E S The curators have emerged from hibernation, the rollers are out in full force and players from around the district are bleaching their grass-stained whites, airing out their cricket bags and oiling their brand new willow. Welcome to the 2014-15 Goulburn Murray Cricket season. Where has the time gone? It only seems like yesterday Kyabram Fire Brigade claimed GMC’s ultimate prize at Moama Recreation Reserve.

finals matches will be shortened to the same number of overs seen in the home and away season.

On the back of an impressive 2013-14 competition, the Flames will enter the new season as favourites. Despite some changes in personnel, the reigning premier has filled its losses and welcomed another international to the fold.

Budding young cricketers will also benefit from an extra junior grade. An under 10 tier will run under the Cricket Australia endorsed T20 Blast format. Players outside GMC can become involved, with teams of eight taking part in about half a dozen games run on the same day at the same venue.

Fire Brigade isn’t the only team calling on the services of overseas talent with at least 10 players expected to join the district competition. Kyabram Fire Brigade, Stanhope, Cooma, Tongala, BLU and Moama are all leading the charge. “I think it’s exciting to have so many overseas players coming,” GMC chairman Jon Varcoe said. “With that talent, the standard of the competition should lift and attract some more interest and give those clubs a boost. “We’re all about growing the game, making it more exciting and attracting kids to play. It’s a great thing for cricket in this area.” Ahead of its third season, the now shortened GMC competition (October 11 start) will look slightly different with the B grade format changed from two-day to one-day cricket while

Thursday night games and Sunday doubleheaders will headline the senior T20 competition, which will run from mid-November to midDecember. Semi-finals will be eradicated; with preliminary rounds leading straight into a final. Stemming from the C grade final controversy, GMC has thrown out the existing rule and applied the Duckworth–Lewis method. When games are rain affected, officials can calculate the game’s proceedings with a phone app to eliminate human error which marred the Echuca v Girgarre grand final. Varcoe also confirmed no change to the GMC board. Brayden Carey has come on board as the association’s new administrator and will oversee all the day-to-day formalities including scoring, meeting minutes, agenda and sponsorship liaison while running the MyCricket website.

BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD

REGAN MORE

By Geordie Cowan

Young Echuca tennis player is looking forward to seeing how far his sport can take him. Completing his year 12 studies at Echuca College this year, More plans to take a gap year in 2015 and play at various tournaments across Australia and possibly overseas. Recovering from a wrist injury sustained earlier this year, the 18-year-old said he had not found it too difficult to rise in the rankings in the past but that it would be a whole different challenge next year. ‘‘I find that I’m always climbing the rankings, but it’s always been gradual,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve always had mum with me (at every competition), so it’s not too independent, but next year it will be because I would just be alone. ‘‘It’s pretty hard on you, but I need to do it. ‘‘That’s what tennis is all about. It’s about yourself.’’ Staying injury-free may be an obvious answer when determining what he needs to do to advance further in the sport, but it is a poignant one for More. ‘‘A lot of sessions in Melbourne have talked about needing to do more strength and conditioning work at gym, to prevent myself from getting

injured,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve just got to manage everything well and not play at too many tournaments.’’

More determines what he wants to do before the start of each point and then tries to follow it through.

More used to train everyday, but due to injuries, he now has limited but intense sessions.

‘‘Personally I’d rather just attack their backhand or their weakness until they make a mistake or run off the court,’’ he said.

Echuca’s Andrew Crossman is his main coach, but sometimes he goes to Shepparton to train with Luke Dixon.

‘‘Just play really aggressive to get a jump on them as well.’’

‘‘He (Dixon) does more tactical stuff, while Andrew is more technical, which he’s really good at,’’ More said. The best parts of the teenager’s game are his serve and his forehand. ‘‘I try to run around my backhand a bit because it’s not as good,’’ he said. ‘‘But I can hit shots from anywhere on my forehand, while I can serve at over 200(km/h).’’ However he was finding more confidence in his backhand shots as he returned to training. But with tennis, being a successful competitor is as much to do with the mental battle as the physical capabilities.

But when matches start to become tighter and closer at the end of a tournament, it is not as easy to attack all the time. ‘‘I probably would encourage myself to play as naturally as possible, but it’s very hard once the nerves come into play,’’ More said. ‘‘You have to think about your shot a lot more, because usually as a tennis player everything’s autonomous, but in a tight situation you’ve got to think about bending (your knees), racquet back, (following through to get the racquet) over your shoulder, don’t look up.’’ More hoped to return to competitive tennis at a ‘‘pretty strong’’ Bendigo tournament, which has quite a bit of prizemoney and was then targeting a spot in an ITF Challenger in Sydney.

ANDREW BRIGGS

CLUB COMMITMENT By Luke McManus

Echuca coach Andrew Briggs missed a fair chunk of the Murray Bombers’ 2013-14 pre-

season campaign. Not ideal when you’re a newly appointed coach of a club searching for answers on the back of a combined five wins in two Goulburn Valley Football League seasons.

The trip, a five-week holiday to the United States, was pre-planned and given the green light by the Murray Bombers’ committee at the time Briggs put pen to paper.

record, anything to “gain that one or two per cent” on the season before.

Briggs, who was still living in Melbourne at the time, was introduced to the squad briefly before jet setting across the Pacific in December.

Baylor boats a sports program ranked among America’s best and enjoys “eyeopening” facilities, which includes a newly built $250 million stadium that houses Baylor’s football team, the Bears.

“It wasn’t a great start for a footy club to see your coach once a week and then not at all for five weeks,” Briggs conceded.

The itinerary featured a visit to Baylor University, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institution located in Waco, Texas.

“But saying that I didn’t miss many sessions and I was in contact the whole time.”

Briggs’ interest focused on the college’s football program, which has helped the Bears rise to prominence within the NCAA in the past two seasons under head coach Art Briles.

Despite the absence, the 32-year-old remained committed to the season ahead.

After visiting Richmond Football Club in 2013, Briggs wanted to compare the two organisations, in particularly the expenditure.

Orders were barked over the phone, training schedules and documents sent via email and game plans tweaked at many a hotel room.

Fair to say there was a significant difference.

Briggs’ handpicked the coaching group of senior assistant Matt Barden, development coach Andrew Thomson, rehab expert Ross Evans and fitness guru Darren Carmody.

Lucrative sponsorship, multi-million dollar fundraising efforts and donations from alumni contributes to a college endowment tipping $1.1 billion.

Any player absenteeism was reported back to the coach.

The Bears have a purpose-built indoor training facility equipped with a “thumping sound system” to prepare players for the opposition’s boisterous crowds.

Briggs made the most of his time away preparing and devising a plan which he hoped would see the Murray Bombers eclipse last year’s 1-17 win-loss

One coach is assigned to every 10 players on the roster to review “every single play” on a projector screen inside their own individual meeting rooms.

22 | Echuca Moama LOCAL SPORT 2014-15

Briggs also had a tour of the gym. “To put it in perspective, Richmond had two squat racks in the gym, Baylor has 12.”. Baylor’s grandeur is a far cry from the rawness of Victoria Park and Briggs knows that. What the 2001 premiership player took away from the experience was on a much smaller and simpler scale, but just as important. Briggs gained an insight into player management at the professional level and Baylor’s systematic approach to preparation, training and rehabilitation. “It (was) really interesting to see how they look after players, I’m trying to (implement) some of that back here,” Briggs said. “Obviously we don’t have the money, but it was the little things and like how we look after players that can go a long way in helping us improve. “Things like getting the players to use (stretching and resistance) bands and foam rollers to help prevent hamstring and other soft-tissue injuries. “We have a lot of young guys at the club who might not know how to train properly, they don’t realise how much control they can have on their own training. “It’s about educating them and, from our part, spending the time to monitor them.” From educational to aesthetic, a look around Baylor’s change rooms triggered another idea. “We need to adapt to our limits so a simple lick of paint or a few (motivational) words posted up around the place can sometimes help remind the players who and what they’re playing for.” Briggs’ philosophy and approach yielded plenty of promising signs in season 2014, with key personnel signing on and a throng of younger talent propping up Echuca’s immediate future. As the coach prepares for the 2015 season, this time on Australian soil, expect more changes to be introduced. Not to the heights and expectations set at Baylor, but changes which will help Echuca bounce back to GVFL prominence.

GIRL POWER By Luke McManus

Pathways and opportunities in women’s football are driving participation levels skyward. About 169,000 girls and women played football around Australia in 2013, while the number of female-only teams and competitions has tripled since 2011. Victoria houses 188 teams, welcoming an extra 43 in season 2014 alone, all spread across the junior, youth (under 18) and senior level. The Victorian Women’s Football League has 31 clubs which boast many of the nation’s best talent. The echelon, including 2013 number one draft pick Daisy Pearce, have taken centre stage in the AFL’s annual Melbourne verse Western Bulldogs exhibition match. All but two teams are located in metropolitan Melbourne, with Bendigo and Redan (Ballarat) providing the link between country footballers and the senior competition. Opportunities at Bendigo Thunder have been created and utilized by one of the powerhouses of the district’s youth girls competition, Echuca. Echuca Youth Girls’ Alyx Glanville was one of the first to take a spot on the Thunder’s list, gaining a taste for the top level against the undefeated Darebin. Glanville, who represented Victoria Country at the youth girls national championships earlier this year, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the talent arising from the Dave Pearson-coached Murray Bombers. Kelly Shotton also donned the ‘Big V’ while Kiara Cooper, along with former teammate and 2013 premiership player Dede Atkinson, represented the

Woomeras (all-indigenous team). Eight players from Echuca received an interleague honour last year and six — Glanville, Shotton, Alana Long, Rebecca Kennedy, Sophie Douglas and Alyssa Clark — featured in the Subway Shield, the girls’ equivalent to the boys’ V/Line Cup. Those names encouraged Echuca’s new crop of players who, in turn, will have a similar part to play over the coming seasons “Because we’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of talented girls, those girls attract new players,” Pearson said. “Next year we’ll lose Kiara Cooper and Krystal Lloyd who have been exceptional. “We’ll probably come back a little bit, which will help the competition, but we’ll still be pretty strong.” Pearson has been overwhelmed with the level of commitment shown by both old and new in season 2014. While there has been no dramatic rise in participation, the consistency of numbers at training and on game day is stronger than 12 months ago. ‘‘We fell short of fielding 15 many times last season, at times we could only field the required 11 players,’’ Pearson said. ‘‘This year has been great and we have rarely had that problem. ‘‘We still need to grow it, but we’re building.” Pearson aimed to work closely with the district’s schools next season to establish a better recruiting base.

Right now, the growth is steady and strong enough to see the Murray Bombers undefeated and primed to win a second-straight premiership. What the Shepparton and District Football League needs now is for other clubs to follow suit as the competition looks to expand and keep its momentum ticking along. ‘‘We’re looking at starting teams in Tatura and Nathalia and there’s also plans for a Sheppartonbased academy, a girls version of the Murray Bushrangers,’’ Pearson said. The buzz coming out of Shepparton, with a VWFL team also a possibility, would provide further opportunity for the likes of Glanville, Shotton and Long, who were all part of the Melbourne-based Calder Cannons academy this year. Travel time would be cut in half, meaning more time on the park and less hassle for player (and family), almost eliminating one of the main stumbling blocks facing regional footballers. Former Echuca local Sarah Baldwin had already moved to Bendigo before Echuca Youth Girls was formed. Baldwin was awarded the Thunder’s vice-captaincy this season and reached a club-high 50-game milestone in July. Provided with the same opportunities and pathways seen now, maybe Baldwin’s development would have been fast-tracked and we could have seen Baldwin’s name, instead of Pearce’s name, called out as the inaugural number one draft pick.

NEVER TOO OLD WHY NOT JOIN...? Echuca Masters Football Club

Every Wednesday evening from 6:00pm the ‘old fellas’ get together for a light run and follow it up with a dinner, beverage or two and a yarn about stories of old … “Nah, we’re not that old, some of us are only 35ish!” ... times down at Echuca South Recreation Reserve. Although based from the clubrooms at United, the colours for the team were constructed to support the major sponsor the Echuca Workers & Services Club who have sponsored us for more than 10 years and are keen followers. In 2014, with the introduction of a second team (over 35s and over 45s), it has led to the further expansion of the player base and requirement of more followers, assistants and players. Success in Geelong at the 2013 Australian Masters Games, after amalgamating with Albury Wodonga’s Murray Crays Superules side in both 35s and 45s divisions (45s won gold and 35s silver) proved the champions in the club. With the club originally developed in the mid 80’s (Kyabram - Tongala), it was important to follow the AFL Masters Code of “Footy for Fun” and rules to look after players. The league (Vic Country) is now looking to introduce further teams in 2015-16 with clubs likely to form in Maryborough, Blighty, Horsham and possibly Phillip Island. Current teams from Geelong and Gippsland are the furthest to travel to. Depending on the draw, with usually 10 rounds plus a couple of practice matches (played fortnightly), it allows for plenty of rest and recovery between games. The club is looking to source players from “retiring” senior/reserve players from local clubs that are still looking to keeping active and fit. First-time players can also join as the culture is to support and encourage. No matter the skill level the club members are patient and supportive with development of members. With state and national carnivals where catching up for a kick and a beverage is a high priority, the ability to go further with your game is a personal option. Some events are held internationally, including a Bali Nines event and two Melbourne metro leagues where it is not uncommon for there to be some former AFL players on the club lists. With a great camaraderie culture, the Echuca Masters is a great place to meet new people and keep fit with some members coming from as far as Benalla and Mooroopna to play. There is a social calendar of activities with many members also associated with other local clubs, which is encouraged to build relationships. To get involved, check out our Facebook page www.facebook.com/EchucaMasters or call Toby McCoy 0429 176 298 or Paul Lavars 0400 683 676.

CAITLYN STRACHAN

FROM VIXEN TO FIREBIRD By Luke McManus

Caitlyn Strachan revealed more nerves talking to media in 2014 than when she did stepping out for ANZ Championship powerhouse Melbourne Vixens. The unease was a surprise given the netballer’s two years in the trans-Tasman system and broad experience in public speaking, running junior clinics and ambassadorial work with Netball Victoria. Surely a light-hearted chat with a star-struck journalist would also never compare to debuting in front of 8000 screaming fans inside Melbourne’s Hisense Arena. ‘‘I’m not really good at this,’’ Strachan said. The 27-year-old’s modest nature brings about the nerves. Strachan never sidesteps the questioning; she is simply taken aback by the interest surrounding her professional career. The attention is treated with plenty of care, much like her premiership medallion and the memories the Vixens’ grand final triumph. ‘‘It’s something pretty special,’’ Strachan said on the Vixens’ 11-goal win against Queensland Firebirds. ‘‘The feeling is really difficult to describe...it was quite overwhelming. “I will definitely cherish those memories forever.’’ Few sportspeople can boast a championship after

just one full season at elite level. But boasting is not the mid-courter’s style and rather than rest on her laurels, Strachan planned to use the experience to help transition from Vixen to Firebird ahead of the 2015 season. An offer to join the Queensland Firebirds in July was too good for Strachan to pass up, with more opportunities on the horizon after just four games with the Vixens this season. Constantly overlooked for the Vixens’ starting seven, Strachan was constrained to the bench for most of the season as fellow debutant Liz Watson dominated. Undeterred and admirably resolute, Strachan prepared week after week both mentally and physically to ensure any opportunity which came her way was seized. ‘‘Of course I wanted to play more than I did,’’ Strachan said. ‘‘I trained as hard as I possibly could, I had great relationships and combinations with the girls on court, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. ‘‘I always had a positive mindset. If I wasn’t prepared then it would have reflected in a bad performance when I was called up.

‘‘I’m quite happy with the amount of court time this season. It has given me a lot of confidence going into next year.’’ Strachan will see out the rest of the Australian Netball League season with Victorian Fury, vicecaptaining the reigning premier to a potential backto-back title. Strachan will then, with a wedding and honeymoon in between, say goodbye to Victoria in December to begin a new chapter. “It was extremely difficult decision,” Strachan said on leaving the Vixens. “I’ve come through the Netball Victoria pathway and I had a really enjoyable season with the Vixens. “But I see a little more opportunity on court moving up north and I’m really excited to see what the move might bring.” A move will mean more travel (and a renewed Foxtel subscription) for the Strachan family, who managed to attend every Vixens home game and most away games this season. Family support has never been too far away, with brother Ben already based in Brisbane.
