ECHUCA MOAMA TRI CLUB
T S U J R O , D R A TRI H B U L C I R T H T I FUN, W Triathlon is a booming business in the twin towns, with local enthusiasts building national reputations, so SOPHIE BALDWIN dropped in to see what all the excitement is about.
THE Echuca Moama Tri Club supports athletes from beginners through to elite, the very young and even the not so young. Last year the club passed 120 members and they are hoping to increase on that figure this year. Based on the ethos of fitness, family and fun, the club places particular emphasis on encouraging young people into the sport. President Steve Loader said the club offers a timed training course for juniors every Wednesday night — a 200 m sandy river bank supervised swim (close to sand bar), 3.5 km marshalled ride course (no open roads) and a 1.5 km run course. “Juniors must be capable of swimming 200m, own a BMX or mountain bike with working brakes and a helmet. 6 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2016–17
“It’s great fun, the kids have a ball and we would love to encourage anyone along who would like to give it a go,” Steve said. While the club is all about participation it has also tasted some real success with local members doing well on the Australian scene. Campbell Gray placed 11th in the 2016 School Sport Australia Triathlon Championships in Hervey Bay, while four current members Lauren Dehne, Connor and Matilda Terry and Tim Fitzpatrick have been selected to represent Australia at the 2016 Snowy Mountains International Triathlon Union Cross Triathlon
World Championships later in November. Matilda was also crowned world champion at the cross triathlon championships in Sardinia last year, only three short years after taking up the sport. The club’s season kicks off in October with a few sessions at the Echuca pool before moving out to Winbi and runs right through until the end of March.
The senior course length at Winbi includes a 300 m swim, 12.5 km ride and a 2.4 km run. Steve is proud of the fact the club provides the perfect pathway for people to come along as beginners, learn the sport, improve fitness and achieve their personal goals, while also supporting those amongst the group who take the sport a little more seriously.
HAVE B
“There is nothing more rewarding as a club than to see people come along, start from scratch and work their way up to a level of fitness that allows them to compete in a triathlon, or even a half or full ironman, even if it takes a couple of years to get there.” The club trains once a week and after all the sweaty stuff of training there’s a get together afterwards for social events. The club hosts a state series triathlon in January and last year more than 300 people entered, many having a go for the first time. The race weekend also includes a junior triathlon, a fun run and a 3 km wharf to winery swim.
The club is also hosting a training day for beginner and intermediate members on October 8 and will host an elite event later in the year. Weather permitting a group of female members also meets on a Sunday for an open water swim in Kilkerrin Lakes for additional practice. “We just want to encourage as many people as we can to come along try the sport and get involved. Triathlon is a fantastic family friendly sport and we run a very inclusive club,” Loader said.
7 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2016–17
The club is always looking at ways to improve things and last year they introduced an award for the fastest club member over the line in both the junior and senior categories — and are considering a wave start for the swim next year.

Nestled amongst the horses, roosters and cattle in the countryside a few minutes east of Echuca is the charming Echuca Village Tennis Club. You will struggle to find a more tranquil and idyllic setting for country tennis although you may be forgiven for taking your eye off the ball when a frisky horse bolts past the side fence. Although we might not be the biggest tennis club in the region we have a welcoming new hall and a passionate, fun loving and friendly atmosphere that will make you understand why tennis starts with love. We are hoping to recruit and develop our talent and build on our finals results in the Campaspe Tennis Association from the last few years. We proudly have new uniform sponsors, in the Moama RSL this year, and we are looking forward to great times ahead. No matter what your age, gender and competitive spirit, Echuca Village Tennis Club will have you sending down the aces is no time. There is also ladies social tennis on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 pm. During daylight savings play commences at 9 am. The social ladies contact is Joy Hooper on 5482 2649. We welcome all new comers and returning members in the 2016–17 season, with practise starting in September. IT’S A TOUGH — AND OCCASIONALLY PAINFUL — BUSINESS Edie Haley might have had the occasional prang but she gets right back on her bike and is keeping the dream alive as she tells SOPHIE BALDWIN she is about to make the hyper leap from juniors to open class.
10 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2016–17
EDIE Haley is made of pretty tough stuff. After all she has been hit by a car. Then in another spill split her head and knee open. And came off her bike and had her skin stripped from her face and body. Oh, yes, and when she was down and not quite out, and a cyclist rode over her head. But Edie has taken it all on the chin, sometimes literally, in the pursuit of her dream to make it as a cyclist. You have to admire the physical and mental toughness of this quiet 16-year-old girl — but then Edie’s mantra of ‘if you fall you just have to get back up and keep going’ is serving her well. Cycling runs in the family. Edie’s dad Dermot Finnegan rode for the Irish Federation Cycling team, competed in the Herald Sun Tour and just missed out on a place in Ireland’s Sydney Olympic team in 2000. He may have got Edie started back in 2010, but it is her own determination and desire that is keeping her going now. “It was dad’s dream at the start and many people have been surprised that I have kept going after some of the crashes I have had, but I do love it,” Edie said. “There have been a few times where I have cracked it and I think yeah, I will do something else, but I always end up coming back, the key is to stay motivated.
Cycling star Edie Haley. Sports mad she wouldn’t mind one day getting involved in sports engineering or prosthetics.
She also has a nutritionist and is learning the importance of food pre- and post-racing.
Edie’s next cycling goal is trying for a spot in the national road series team — a foot in that door will enable her to take the next step.
She follows a specific six week training plan in the lead-up to events, which includes four weeks of hard work, one week of easing up and a week of rest.
She has also made the decision to swap cycling clubs and now trains in Bendigo because there are more female riders for her to compete and train against.
This will be the last year she competes in the junior nationals.
While she is involved in track, road and mountain bike racing she is the first to admit she isn’t a sprinter. She prefers the challenge of long distance racing.
“One day I would love to be able to represent Australia at a Commonwealth Games or an Olympics but I have to be realistic. “In a 35 km road race we might have surges of speed up to 45–50 km/h but we never race at the one “It is a dangerous sport and I have to have a backup speed,” she said. plan in case I get hurt or injured.” The backup plan for Edie includes enrolling in SEDA (a school which combines sporting and academia) in Bendigo. She will be able to train and work on her sport, while also getting a level of education that will allow her to fulfil her other dream of life after cycling.
“It’s fairly tactical and if you are any further back then fifth place, well it’s pretty hard to win from there.” Edie is currently involved in the north east development team in Albury-Wodonga and is coached by former Australian women’s cycling coach Lyn Heritage.
The high point of Edie’s career to date was winning her division in the Austral (the oldest continuous bike race in Australia) earlier this year. “I was really lucky to come away with a win at that, which was an honour, and I was over the moon. “I couldn’t wait to get off the track and ring my coach, it was a big surprise.” Edie is also one of two Victorian recipients of the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin medal — it seems she is heading in the right direction to achieve her dreams.

SPORTSTAR OF THE YEAR
THE SECRET STAR BEHIND OUR SPORTSTAR AWARDS Jenny Dwyer has devoted 20 years to the successful running — and growth — of the annual Sportstar of the Year awards and SOPHIE BALDWIN caught up with her to see what happens behind the scenes. THE Sportstar of the Year Awards have been a familiar part of the Echuca-Moama sporting scene for the past three decades. Instigated by former Riverine Herald general manager Geoff Kelly in 1987, the awards originated as a way of recognising the breadth of sports and the achievements of local sporting stars across the Riverine Herald circulation area. Sportstars are nominated monthly in either the junior or senior category and a judging panel made up of five representatives, picks a monthly winner, who then goes on to compete for the overall title. But for the past 20 years the cornerstone of their success has been the Riv’s Jenny Dwyer.
“It is really touching to see them grow and watch their sporting careers unfold over the coming years,” Jenny said. “We have had great winners from many different sports and while it seems we are dominated by football, we have had winners from so many different sports, it’s just great.” she said. Nominees have included stars of table tennis, body
Local identity Brett Sands is the only star to win the top award three times and rule changes in the early 2000s have meant this feat will never be achieved again, the maximum any one person can now win is twice. “Brett has been a worthy winner and he is still out there supporting youth and giving back to the community,” Jenny said. “He has also been one of my favourite guest speakers we have had, along with Olympic cyclist Scott McGory and, of course, Australian netball coach Lisa Alexander.” The awards are held every year in February at the Moama Bowling Club and have evolved over the years to include Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and Spirit of Sport. These awards recognise the role of those people involved in sport behind the scenes, those who dedicate a lot of time and effort into their chosen sport. “We have had great nominations and great winners throughout the years and the Special Achievement Award is designed to recognise people who have significantly contributed to their chosen sport over a period of many years,” Jenny added. “There have only been 10 winners of this prestigious award since its inception.” Jenny estimates to date there have been more than 300 junior and 250 senior nominations over the course of the awards. “It’s not getting any smaller and because we have such great partnerships with Echuca Travel Centre and the Moama Bowling Club it makes for the smooth running of this event.
“There have also been a number of judges over the years who have contributed to the success of the awards which is not an easy job and we are thankful for all that support. “I am very proud of my involvement and I look forward to it every year,” Jenny said. Managing Director of Echuca Travel Centre Allison Yeates has been involved with the Sportstar of the Year for 20 years, aside from her love of travel it is her next favourite thing. “The Award is a celebration of everything sport does for our community and it is a pleasure and an honour to be involved as a sponsor and to also be partnered with the Moama Bowling Club and the Riverine Herald who continue to provide a framework for Sportstar to be prestigious in its recognition of the sportspeople of our community,” Allison said.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY Y R O T S I H N I D E P E E T S Echuca’s Taylor Beard
Whichever way you look at it, Echuca Cricket Club has a great story to tell and DAVID CHAPMAN looked into the club’s latest anniversary.
18 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2016–17
ECHUCA Cricket Club has only been around for 25 years but owns a history stretching back more than a century. With the mergers and changes being forced on all country sport ECC is its most recent incarnation — but no name change has slowed down the team in its success on the field. And a quick glance at its records lets them do all the talking. Seven A-grade pennants, nine in B-grade, three in C and one in D — while the under-16 team has won four grand finals. Add to that it has won the prestigious club champions award in the Campaspe Cricket Association/Goulburn Murray Cricket Association 13 times. Club treasurer Rob Owen has been there from the start. He was with the Echuca East club, which was successful in its own right, before it merged with Womboota to form the Echuca Cricket Club. It all began after a decision was made to merge the Echuca and Rochester cricket associations. “Both associations had lost clubs over the years and it was thought a merger would strengthen cricket in the area,” Owen said. “It was looked upon with enthusiasm that it would be the saviour of everything.” And so the Campaspe Cricket Association was born. In its inaugural season of 1991–92 in the new association, Echuca fielded senior teams in A-, Band C-grades. Now the club has teams in A-, B-, C-, and D-grades, one under-16 side, two under-14 teams, and four under-12 teams. The club also runs the popular In2Cricket program and T20 Blast under the supervision of experienced senior cricketers. But its most exciting recent development was last season’s launch of an all-girl cricket side, which will take the field again in the 2016–17 season. The club is equally proud of its junior development, with more than half the A-grade side having played juniors at the club. Club stalwart Jason Harling said it had always been a motto of the club to provide enough teams for everyone who wanted to play a game of cricket. “We don’t turn anyone away. Everyone gets a go.
We don’t care how many sides it takes, we’ll do it,” he said. “The association has put a limit of two internationals per club but if we did that it would mean two kids would miss out. “When you look at it, half your kids who have come through the juniors go off to uni and you don’t see them again, but the other half hang around and they make your club.” Echuca East and Womboota shared the Victoria Park ground and it’s where the current Echuca club has its base. The club offers great training facilities with four synthetic nets, improved centre wicket area and an electronic scoreboard for playing days. Echuca now plays in the Goulburn Murray Cricket Association, which was formed a few years ago following the amalgamation of the Campaspe and Kyabram competitions. Echuca won its first A-grade pennant in 1993–94, the same season in which David Jackson scored the team’s (still) record score of 210 not out. Last season the power hitting all-rounder Taylor Beard came so close to breaking that record, falling just nine runs short with 201. Another of the club’s top bats was Barry Findlay, who played at Eaglehawk and also spent time at Premier Cricket club Footscray-Edgewater. Findlay made 194 in 1998–99 and still heads the club’s A-grade batting averages with an impressive 56.56. The best bowling figures came last season when Taylor Beard snared 8–45 against Rochester Tigers. Prior to that Jason Carlisle claimed a remarkable 7–15 against Echuca South in 2008–09. The club’s 25-year history is peppered with similarly impressive records. Simon Maddox has played the most games of 224 and with 353 has also taken the most wickets. Not surprisingly he has also collected the most fivewicket hauls of 11. Steve Tonkin holds the honour of appearing in the most premiership sides with a total of nine to his name. Even Harling himself has several notable figures to his name, including 7–83 in a grand final win over Mathoura in 1997–98. That pennant was part of a golden era for the club and came in the middle of a hat-trick of premierships for the A-grade side, having won the pennant the previous season and again in 1998–99. Owen believes the formation of the Echuca Cricket Club has been a good thing for cricket in the region as it has developed a healthy rivalry between
themselves and Echuca South and Moama. The club’s history continues as it prepares for what promises to be another competitive season in 2016–17. Last season the club’s A-, B-, C- and D-grade senior teams made the finals with C-grade reaching the grand final but missed out on securing the pennant. Brendan Prendergast is back again as the A-grade coach and his philosophy to the game was epitomised in words he penned in the club’s handbook three years ago. “It is my role to ensure that the Echuca Cricket Club is an environment where everyone can communicate with each other and discover ways to improve their game on an individual, team and club level,” Prendergast said. “We will strive to develop high performing individuals both on and off the field and that everyone who comes to the club leaves it a better cricketer and person than when they entered. “I find this is best achieved when people are enjoying their participation and to this end there will be plenty of fun to be had. “After all, cricket is a game to be enjoyed.” Celebrations for the club’s 25th anniversary will be finalised during the course of the season.

Echuca Cricket Club might have only been established in 1991 but it was born out of a century of sporting commitment — first with the Echuca Cricket Association, then Campaspe and today as an integral part of the Goulburn Murray Cricket Association. And through all that change the club has been headquartered at Victoria Park, traditionally Echuca’s main sporting venue. This season the club will field senior teams in A-, B-, C- and D-grade and juniors in under-12, 14 and 16. Echuca Cricket Club also runs the popular In2Cricket program and the hugelysuccessful T20 Blast — all under the supervision of experienced senior cricketers. The 2016–17 season will also be our second year fielding an all-girl cricket side. Its establishment last season was a major turning point for our club as the girls have proved a success from the word go. And looking back over the 25 years of our club in its present incarnation it is a remarkable story of success — we have been club champions 13 times, seen the A-grade win seven grand finals; B-grade win nine; C-grade three and D-grade one. In the juniors the 16s have won four.
Last season all senior teams made the finals, C-grade reached the grand final. This season the club is planning to field teams in all grades and is always looking for new players to join our proud, successful and friendly ranks — and hopefully be part of another winning grand final. We have great training facilities, including four synthetic nets, an improved centre wicket area and an electronic scoreboard for match days. Brendan Prendergast has been reappointed as senior coach for another season and he will be steering an exciting mixture of youth and experience at the club.

Rising from the ashes of senseless vandalism at its Moama headquarters the local cycling club is back on track and looking for new members reports SOPHIE BALDWIN. 22 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2016–17
THE Echuca-Moama Cycling Club provides a great start for young riders looking to learn the skills of track cycling in a safe and supportive way. President Chris Eddy has been involved in the club for the past four years and he reckons track cycling is a great sport. “We have a safe venue, a supportive environment and we offer kids a great introduction to the sport. We start off with basic bike skills and introduce racing formats as they progress,” Chris said. “All you need to bring along is a bike helmet, sneakers to start off with, shorts and a shirt with sleeves.
“There are a few skills to learn about track riding, such as riding close to people, but we provide all of that in a safe environment,” he said. The season kicks off in October and this year the club will offer a Monday night skill focused session, followed by a Tuesday night which sees kids split up into ability/experience groups and enjoy some track racing. Sessions start from 5.30 pm and will run for a couple of hours. “We are a pretty social group and we usually have a barbecue afterwards. We encourage parents to come along and get involved.” The club is looking forward to the future after a terrible start to the year, where vandals destroyed the clubrooms and set fire to the bike shed, destroying thousands of dollars’ worth of bikes. “We have got 14 brand new bikes ready to go now and we will get a few more down the track. The bikes cater for kids up to about 14 years of age.” The club has fostered some serious talent on the
track with Pat Eddy currently leading the under-15 age group. He took top spot in the 2016 under-15 aggregate junior series, finishing first in all three races across the event and ending 160-points ahead of the competition. Training around seven to nine hours a week, Pat said the social aspect of cycling is what he enjoys most. “It’s pretty good that the whole family can go on rides together on holidays and things like that. We also all go to the same events; which makes things easier,” Pat said. Fellow cyclist Kayden Jeffreys has also tasted success. He was the first under-19 across the line in the 30th Annual Wagga to Albury John Woodman Memorial cycling classic (135 km) in July. Cycling is a priority for Kayden who commits 10–12 hours a week towards the sport. “I’ve been involved in racing for three years now and have been riding for four,” Kayden said. “My biggest support has been my family and the local bike shop (Ash Hall Cycles),” he said. Kayden competed in the nationals last year and came 44th out of 100, and most recently finished a close second at Midlands Zone that saw him qualify for state finals.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and acknowledge our major sponsors, The Moama Bowling Club, Long’s Echuca Moama, Toshiba Air Conditioning, The Cal, The Echuca Hotel, The Star Hotel and the Riverine Herald for their ongoing and generous support of our club. Our 2017 season will commence with preseason training in November to prepare for a successful new year in the Goulburn Valley Football and Netball Leagues.
