The 15-tonne behemoth has been a threemonth project and will serve as the Whitten Racing Brothers mobile workshop at each of the motocross and supercross rounds staged across Australia. It will also represent a new chapter in WBR’s brief but spectacularly promising history. Kawasaki Motors Australia has jumped on board and signed up Echuca’s own motocross outfit for the 2015 season.

year but then Kawasaki came to us wanting to support a national MX2 team and now we find ourselves with new bikes, new parts – and a budget.’’ It’s a quantum leap for WBR.
‘‘It was more of a passion project, I wasn’t racing as much so instead of spending money on myself I thought why not put it back into WBR,’’ Travis Whitten said.
A regionally-based team with humble beginnings as a self-backed and self-operating racing team focused predominantly on its junior program.
‘‘We achieved some results, mainly through our juniors but not so much our senior team.
A program which got Tasmanian-based Hugh McKay to runner-up at the Australian Junior MX Championship.

Suddenly WBR will now be operating under the ProFormance Kawasaki Race Team guise, and move from the fringe of the sport to centre stage.
“It will definitely give us more recognition, we might not be solely racing under the WBR banner but our brand will still be there,” Whitten said. ‘‘Sometimes I sit back and think ‘what are we getting ourselves into?’ but it’s an amazing opportunity for us and will be an exciting ride. ‘‘Before our riders were responsible for getting

“Now everything will be taken care of and with the truck everything’s gone to a whole new level logistically.’’
The national motocross circuit begins in Horsham on March 29 while, for the first time, Shepparton will host a round (July 19), which will give the boys somewhat of a home ground advantage.
Riders Matt Ryan (Kyabram), Dylan Leary (Tasmania) and Alex Morris (Mornington Peninsula) will put theory into practice during the season with Morris filling in for Ryan, who’s

LATISHA PAINTER spends a lot of time with her blood rushing to her brain.
Probably more time than she spends on her feet.
In order to curb their energetic child, Painter’s mother Lauren took her daughter down to Palmer’s and the rest, as they say, was history.
Because you can’t make it as a national tumbling champion if you are afraid of throwing your body through the air.
‘‘I first went to check out a gym locally and they told me I was much too advanced for their classes,’’ Painter said.
Over and over again.
‘‘So they sent me to Palmer’s and they said they wanted to take me on board.’’
But only because she spends a lot of time upside down.
Tumbling isn’t exactly a high-profile sport. Even curling made the Olympics before tumbling bounced through the doors and onto the program. However, for 17-year-old Painter it’s a demanding discipline she only knows too well. Painter has been making waves, not only at state level but also on the national circuit and will be jumping for joy if she fulfils her dream of representing Australia at the world gymnastics championships. She trains at Palmer’s Gym in Bendigo, but only one night a week – or a good 30 hours less than most national competitors. But with a 25m trampoline in her Bamawm backyard Painter is living proof you don’t need to spend your life in a gym to make it. ‘‘Now I’ve turned 17 I’m also competing in the open division at competitions,’’ she said. ‘‘While the girls have more experience than me they are also training more. “And they are all so much older, most of them reaching their 30s.” But Painter is always right up there with the national winners; she even claimed a national title as an 11-year-old. Although she admits she was hooked before she reached that feat. When she was six Painter’s parents showed her a Cirque du Soleil video and soon after she was inspired to do handstands and flips all around the house.
A shattering last-minute exit at the nationals in Melbourne last year was the most heartbreaking moment of Painter’s young career – but she is ready to create new memories in its place. Painter sustained a rolled ankle while attempting a specific skill during her warm-up and was forced to withdraw just minutes before the Moama Anglican Grammar student was due to perform. ‘‘I came out of a skill badly and knew I’d landed funnily but I still pushed off into the next skill and I tore everything,’’ she said.
Painter said the Chinese and British tumblers are among the world’s best, a level she has now made her own benchmark.
After five weeks off the tramp Painter was back on track and well on her way to full recovery.
For the next three months Painter will be finetuning her passes for the 2015 nationals at Melbourne’s Hisense arena.
‘‘I couldn’t help myself,’’ she said. ‘‘Mum caught be doing one legged backward saults and was so furious.
‘‘You can perform a five or eight skill pass,’’ she said.
‘‘I just couldn’t keep off the tramp for very long, it was killing me.’’
‘‘I can do the eight but I prefer the five because sometimes it’s more exciting to watch.
Painter has won numerous state titles including one in Tasmania last year, and has been competing nationally since she was 10.
“It really shows off your skills I think. But if I did an eight I’d earn bonus points so it’s hard to make the decision.”
Yet nothing can trump a masterclass with the world’s best tumblers.
Painter will attempt two passes at the nationals, with a routine consisting of a roundoff, double-tuck, whip, whip and double-tuck or round-off, full-twist, full-twist, double-twist.
‘‘I was invited to a training session in Sydney with the national team,’’ she said.
Palmer’s Gym in Bendigo will also host the national club championships during the September school holidays this year.
‘‘And the best tumblers from Shanghai came down to give us a showcase. I’ve never seen anything like it, the skills they have are just incredible. “But then again they have a school specifically for tumbling. It’s all they do.”
Painter will compete in the level seven classifications (international level) at the competition.

FOOTBALL AIDYN JOHNSON
KICK STARTING
THE AFL DREAM
By Luke McManus
TWELVE MONTHS from now Aidyn Johnson’s dream of playing AFL football could be within his grasp.
But as exciting as the thought might be this level-headed 18-year-old is to stay focused on the next step, not the ultimate one. It’s been a life-long ambition of Johnson’s to ‘‘do what I love and be paid for it’’ ever since the Moama dasher first picked up a football.
Under the guidance of newly-appointed Echucabased coach Brett Henderson, the Pioneers should be the trio’s springboard to the AFL. Left frustrated after an injury-riddled 2014, Johnson is focusing on conditioning the body with a full pre-season at the Pioneers and
‘‘I had a slow start to the season last year,’’ Johnson admitted. ‘‘I didn’t get a full pre-season into me so I was injured a lot of the time.
Johnson certainly looks destined to do that after earning a spot in the AFL Academy, a program which provides potential draftees with more than just specialised training.
‘‘Getting in good nick is just one goal I’m setting myself.’’ Another goal is to find a happy balance between football and schooling. The Scotch College student is going into year 12, which will just add to the workload, and the pressure, as he targets his do-or-die football season. ‘‘It’s pretty important,’’ Johnson said on balancing work and play. ‘‘Because if footy doesn’t work out then I’ll need something to fall back on. ‘‘I have to do everything right and sacrifice a few things to make that happen.
Johnson spent a week in December at Essendon Football Club training with the entire squad under the eagle eye of coach James Hird. The experience gave the Moama under 17s premiership player an exciting and invaluable taste for the top level. ‘‘It gave me a good insight into what you have to do to make it,’’ Johnson said. If that time comes Johnson will be more than ready, but for now the on-baller will be working hard to get fit for the 2015 and stay focused on the schoolbooks. Play on.
Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2015
First there’s laying it all on the line in this year’s TAC Cup competition with the Bendigo Pioneers, where fellow Magpies Lachie Schultz and Jamarrah Firebrace are also chasing the AFL dream.
“Although I have no idea what I want to do — apart from play footy.’’
13
But there’s still plenty of water to pass under the bridge first before Johnson can start thinking about the bright lights of the MCG.
within the AFL/AIS Academy to ensure he is in ideal shape before round one.

NEVER TOO OLD WHY NOT JOIN...? Echuca Masters Football Club EMUs Every Wednesday evening from 6:00pm the ‘old fellas’ get together for a light run and follow it up with a dinner, beverage or two and a yarn about stories of old … “Nah, we’re not that old, some of us are only 35ish!” ... times down at Echuca South Recreation Reserve. Although based from the clubrooms at United, the colours for the team were constructed to support the major sponsor the Echuca Workers & Services Club who have sponsored us for more than 10 years and are keen followers. In 2014, with the introduction of a second team (over 35s and over 45s), it has led to the further expansion of the player base and requirement of more followers, assistants and players. Success in Geelong at the 2013 Australian Masters Games, after amalgamating with Albury Wodonga’s Murray Crays Superules side in both 35s and 45s divisions (45s won gold and 35s silver) proved the champions in the club. With the club originally developed in the mid 80’s (Kyabram - Tongala), it was important to follow the AFL Masters Code of “Footy for Fun” and rules to look after players. The league (Vic Country) is now looking to introduce further teams in 2015-16 with clubs likely to form in Maryborough, Blighty, Horsham and possibly Phillip Island. Current teams from Geelong and Gippsland are the furthest to travel to. Depending on the draw, with usually 10 rounds plus a couple of practice matches (played fortnightly), it allows for plenty of rest and recovery between games. The club is looking to source players from “retiring” senior/reserve players from local clubs that are still looking to keeping active and fit. First-time players can also join as the culture is to support and encourage. No matter the skill level the club members are patient and supportive with development of members. With state and national carnivals where catching up for a kick and a beverage is a high priority, the ability to go further with your game is a personal option. Some events are held internationally, including a Bali Nines event and two Melbourne metro leagues where it is not uncommon for there to be some former AFL players on the club lists. With a great camaraderie culture, the Echuca Masters is a great place to meet new people and keep fit with some members coming from as far as Benalla and Mooroopna to play. There is a social calendar of activities with many members also associated with other local clubs, which is encouraged to build relationships. SOCCER JESSICA PITTS
GETTING A KICK
OUT OF LIFE By Erin Lyons
IF YOU want to know what it feels like to kick a goal for Australia, in the heart of a 30,000-seat stadium, catch up with Jessica Pitts. Because she can tell you all about it. This 18-year-old was born to play soccer, but there’s still a lot to consider before the former Echuca-Moama Border Raider puts it all on the line and turns professional.
18 Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2015
For a start she needs to get her driving licence, needs to pass her VCE and achieve an ATAR high enough for entry into the degree she wants. And when she isn’t studying and isn’t on the soccer pitch she also needs to find some time to sleep. Most people her age are just juggling whether they will go to university or to work. This incredibly talented footballer is still tossing up between studying physiotherapy or becoming
a paramedic — and still there is the sporting decision to be made.
country, there really is no better feeling than that,” she said.
But the dashing mid-fielder genuinely believes she can break into the realm of elite sport.
Playing in Jiangning District Sports Centre Stadium in Nanjing, she “was lucky enough to kick a goal for Australia against Bahrain”.
‘‘I’ve always been a hard worker and very determined to do my best,’’ she said ‘‘I just love the sport and am absolutely devoted to playing soccer.’’ Pitts had always dreamed of wearing the green and the gold, and recently that dream became a reality when she was selected for the Mini Matilda’s under 17 Australian girls’ soccer team. She spent time in Vietnam and China, where she lived her most memorable soccer moment – to date. “Playing overseas and representing your
“It might have been a bit of a fluke but I’ll take it. It was so cool.” Selection in the Melbourne Victory squad is the next major goal Pitts wants to achieve after completing her studies, but for now she is nose deep in her maths text book. “I’ve been in a few development programs just below the W-league so it’s definitely achievable after VCE,’’ Pitts said. ‘‘But to play for the actual Matildas is the ultimate dream.’’
Being listed in the top 44 under 20 women soccer players in the Australia was another feat Pitts can add to her already impressive resume. She trains more than most people sleep. And recently she even added tri-weekly journeys to Melbourne to train and play with Bundoora United in the FFV metropolitan premiership league to her busy schedule. ‘‘I can’t wait to get back down to Melbourne to play soccer,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s a big commitment. I’ve thrown myself into a lot of things this year but I’m confident it will all be worth it.’’ Like many athletes her age, the soccer tragic
has a desire to succeed and is blessed with the talent to do it. Under Joseph Montemurro’s wing (her coach during the National Training Centre program) Pitts reckons she has a good chance of breaking through with the sport. ‘‘Joe is one of Australia’s most sought-after soccer coaches,’’ Pitts said. ‘‘He could coach anyone he wanted but he chooses to focus on the development of women’s soccer. ‘‘Hopefully one day there will be even more opportunities for young girls in the same position as me.’’

young U-12 side only missing out by a point of making the finals. The club provides a clear pathway for our junior players to progress from our Border Raiders Saturday Junior program is something the club strongly believes in, this also resulted in a very young U-16 squad competing successfully for the first time for several years in the Country Leagues Championships at Ballarat and the club will again send representative teams to Albury in April this year.
The club has also developed a successful Kinder Kick program for 3 / 4 yr olds with short term programs offered. Border Raiders prides itself on ensuring players at all levels have fun especially at the younger age groups and enjoy the experience. Players are encouraged to attend Tuesday training sessions delivered by qualified coaches. ALL players are required to be registered with Football Federation Victoria.
The club this year is confident that with several players returning and the inclusion of players from Deniliquin which worked effectively in 2014, we will be able to be more competitive at all levels of this great game.

MARTIAL ARTS MATT WICKHAM
YOU SAY KARATE;
I SAY JIU JITSU By Luke McManus
WHEN PUSH came to shove Matt Wickham went above and beyond to earn his purple belt in jiu jitsu. The 45-year-old one-man band – he is the owner, operator and teacher – at Wickham’s Martial Arts Centre was involved in a biking accident only a week before grading, sustaining a knock to his neck and scapula. The two-hour sparring session alone would be enough to flatten the best of them, in the best of condition, but dealing with his injuries required a serious amount of true grit. Fortunately Wickham was able to channel the pain and remain focused to achieve the ultimate prize. Which begs two questions: How and why? ‘‘Through my own teachings and experience,’’ Wickham said, admitting he’s still feeling the effects of the grading and fall. What Wickham has been able to put into practice at the elite level is exactly what his dojo has worked hard to pass onto students since its humble beginnings inside the Bamawm Extension Hall 25 years ago.
‘‘Helping them tick off goals step-by-step and grow in confidence — that’s what keeps me going.’’ Wickham doesn’t deal exclusively with kids but opens the door to all ages looking to learn an
Despite ‘‘not getting any younger’’ Wickham remains committed to teaching Echuca-Moama about the benefits of martial arts – physically and mentally. The fulltime builder wants to eventually expand to accommodate more disciplines, classes and students. Part of that growth will be attract more international martial artists for coaching visits, send more pupils to big-stage competitions and give more back to the community through public demonstrations and come-and-try expos similar to the free self-defence program put on following the assault of an Echuca woman in June last year. ‘‘There’s a bit to do before we reach that stage but we’re getting there,’’ Wickham said. ‘‘I’ve still got so much to learn and put in place first.’’ With the help of members and the centre’s own, including Victor Rosa and Zachary CullyBonsack, Wickham plans to someday step back and let the business thrive without having to dedicate so much time and injury to the cause. Because at the end of the day as much as Wickham loves guiding a student’s transformation, there’s only so many accidental kicks to the crotch a man can take.
Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT 2015
‘‘I get an enjoyment in seeing the kids progress and learn,’’ Wickham said, who also holds a seventh degree black belt in Zen Do Kai (freestyle karate).

CAN ANYONE SINK
THE RIVER RATS? By Erin Lyons
THE MEN’S A grade Rats side have won back-to-back premierships in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association and they don’t look like slowing down anytime soon. A change of regime, new facilities, consistent training sessions and a helping hand from one of Australia’s most wanted hockey coaches might have had something to do with their success. Jai Singhota, who moved from Sydney in 2013 to take an IT job at the Shire of Campaspe, is a well-credentialed coach whose CV includes an
assistant coaching position with the Australian men’s hockey country team. He has also coached premier-league sides and NSW country teams. River Rats men’s coach and former president Mick Gulson said Singhota has been heavily involved in their pre-season training sessions where he predominantly focused on skill
development. ‘‘The outside knowledge he brought to the club has paid dividends,’’ Gulson said. ‘‘He brought something to the club we’d never had before. It was very different to anything I have ever experienced.’’ The River Rats thumped SYC 5-0 in the 2014

grand final, which was just the icing on the cake following a stellar season of 10 wins and two draws. But their success last year was just a catalyst of what is expected to be another standout season. With the 2015 competition due to start after Easter, Gulson said it left plenty of time for district hockey players to train and prepare. ‘‘The past couple of years have been really close, so we’ve been very fortunate,’’ Gulson said. ‘‘I’m looking forward to the new season though,
hopefully we can shake up the competition a little bit.’’ Gulson, who has been involved at the club since 1989, has experienced many ups and downs, he’s seen a number of players come and go and he’s watched young kids make the transition into hockey stars — including his son Jayden who played for the Australia’s under 23 country team in Malaysia and Indonesia last month. There’s no doubt the men have been blitzing their competition. But the women haven’t been so fortunate. Having lost the previous [five] A grade women’s grand finals in heartbreaking fashion, a 2-5 loss
to SYC was the most recent setback, ladies veteran Renee Thompson is eager to go one better this season. ‘‘The depth we have at the club is absolutely incredible,’’ she said. ‘‘Hopefully we can adopt a bit of a new structure this year.’’ Thompson said the club has welcomed the most players they’ve ever had at a summer pre-season. ‘‘We’ve already recruited six new women so it’s looking good,’’ she said.
