Not many teenage girls are veteran mixed martial arts students but SOPHIE BALDWIN caught up with one of them who has been immersing herself in the sport for the past eight years MUAY THAI may not be considered a traditional sport for women, let alone teenage girls, but Echuca’s Chloe Wickham just loves it. And at 15 she is already a seven-year veteran of the discipline — her love affair with Muay Thai beginning on the sidelines, from where she watched her father Matt teach others. “It just looked like so much fun and I thought it was something I could do so I just decided to give it a go. I have been surprised by how much I love it, I really do and it is a huge part of my life now,” Chloe said.
“I love that I can take my own time to learn things. It certainly helps with your fitness and I enjoy practicing my technique, especially pad work— I love hitting the pads.” Chloe’s other love is teaching and she gets a lot of enjoyment out of taking the 6–10-year-old class. “I love how amazing the kids can be — they are so funny and they have so much energy. Once I get a bit older I will definitely teach some more classes.” >>>

>>> Because there are not many girls Chloe’s age involved in Muay Thai (something she would also like to see changed) she spends most of her time training with older women. “It’s awesome to train with them and they are great. The gym is a great place to go, it is so encouraging and welcoming and we are all like one big family.” Chloe has participated in three fights so far and she said stepping into the ring to fight might be a strange feeling, but it is something she enjoys. “It is a different environment once you get in the ring, but it is good and heaps of fun. “You have to concentrate and of course you are bound to get hit but that’s all part of it and it is no different to playing netball or football where people get hit all the time — although I am lucky I haven’t suffered any major injuries other than a sore leg.” Chloe said she liked the fact she can physically look after herself and she often passes on self-defense tips to her female schoolmates. “I am glad I have the skills to defend myself and I feel like I could really help myself if I ever get caught in a bad situation,” Chloe said. “I have learnt self-defense and I often teach my friends because it’s such a good skill to have.”

Erik Holt-Crossman is gearing up to launch himself onto the pro tennis circuit but conceded to SOPHIE BALDWIN he still has a lot of balls left to hit before he will reach the minimum standard to succeed
ERIK HOLT-CROSSMAN knows what it takes to make it big on the world tennis stage and he is prepared to put the time in during the next five years to give it a red hot go. “It has always been my dream to become a professional and I just want to do everything I can to make it, I don’t want to come away and have any regrets,” Erik said. Part of that commitment has seen Erik move to Melbourne, find himself a new coach and balance work life with his training schedule. “I work three days a week to earn some money and spend the rest of my time training.” After attending the International Tennis Federation futures tournaments in Turkey and Kazakhstan the 20-year-old has come back with plenty of things to work on to take his game to the next level. “The biggest thing this experience has taught me is that in terms of ability there is not much difference,
we can all hit the ball,” Erik said. “The difference is the mental strength and when you hit this level nobody gives up — there are no free points. “These men play the big points much better than me and I have a lot of tactics to learn.” Back on home soil Erik spends up to five hours a day training, which includes sessions in the gym, fitness work, practice and Pilates. “I play competition every Saturday, which is considered part of my match practice. “The last time I looked I think I was ranked about 90 in Australia and I am yet to get an international ranking — that won’t happen until I win through the qualifying rounds of the ITF Futures tournament and get through at least the first round in the main draw.” Erik said he has the love for the sport and the
desire to achieve and improve himself as an athlete. “Working on my fitness is very important. “As I said, we can all hit the ball, it’s just that the really good players can do it for hours and hours and I can’t match it with them physically yet.” Erik said he is looking forward to the next Futures tournament, which will be played in Australia next month. “I would love to get an international ranking and love to get into the top 200 in the world. “It would be great to pursue a career in tennis, make it onto the circuit and travel internationally.

B U L C T E K IC R C A C U H EC Echuca Cricket Club was established in 1991, born out of a century of sporting commitment — first with the Echuca Cricket Association, then Campaspe and today as an integral part of the Goulburn Murray Cricket Association. And through all that change the club has been headquartered at Victoria Park, traditionally Echuca’s main sporting venue. This season the club will field senior teams in A, B, C and D-grade and juniors in under-12, 14 and 16. Echuca Cricket Club also runs the popular In2Cricket program and the hugely successful T20 Blast — all under the supervision of experienced senior cricketers. Looking back over the last 26 years of our club in its present incarnation it is a remarkable story of success—we have been club champions 13 times, seen the A-grade win seven grand finals; B-grade win nine; C-grade three and D-grade one. In the juniors the 16s have won four. Last season B, C & D-grade senior teams made the finals, our under-16s made it all the way to the grand final.
We have great training facilities, including four synthetic nets, an improved centre wicket area, a first class playing arena and an electronic scoreboard for match days. As we are also affiliated with Cricket Victoria it means we can provide our members with pathways into representative cricket as well. If you are looking for a game, or a new club, contact us and be part of one of local cricket’s great stories.

President Paul Oman said mountain biking was rapidly gaining in popularity and Echuca- Moama was home to some great, user-friendly tracks situated close to town. “Mountain biking is a great way to improve fitness and your bike skills while having fun at the same time,” Paul said. 18 | Echuca-Moama LOCAL SPORT
“It is an individual sport and riders get to do their own thing at their own pace,” he added. “It is a lot more casual then road racing and there are no cars to contend with. “The camaraderie is great and the people involved are very friendly.” The club currently meets twice a week — Tuesdays at 6 pm at Five Mile and same time Thursdays at the American Hotel to ride the East trails. Paul said all that is required is gloves, safe working
mountain bike and helmet — and good lights if you want to ride the trails at night. The club was also looking to host some low-key racing events at Five Mile every second and fourth Sunday from 10 am (weather permitting). “It doesn’t matter whether you can ride one lap of the course or five; it’s all about getting out there and having a go,” Paul said. “We really want to focus on family-oriented events and encourage parents and their kids to come along and we are hoping to host a few come-andtry days throughout the year.” The twin towns have been hosting the successful All the Rivers Run three-hour enduro mountain bike race for the past three years and the club has evolved from that concept. Paul said anyone interested in becoming a member can contact the club on 0418 350 945.

With seven winners under her belt, the 27-year-old is successfully managing to juggle her career with her other love — motherhood. Tayne didn’t grow up riding horses; instead she was introduced to them by one of her high school teachers.
“We had a teacher involved in the race industry and he used to take students who were interested to race days where we would learn to strap horses and meet trainers, so I guess my love really started from there,” Tayne said. “I really enjoy horses and I just love working with them.” Originally from Mount Gambier Tayne moved to Echuca four years ago because it was a central

Are there any budding future trainers? The locally owned seven-year-old has had two wins on the trot — one at Echuca and most recently in “At two and five years they are not showing too Cowra NSW, although he has been bridesmaid with much interest yet but who knows, one might be more into it than the other.” quite a few placings in his career.

Moama Echuca Touch Footy Moama Echuca Touch Football Association is headed for a big season this summer with keen interest already shown by old and new teams in the competition which is played at Moama Recreation Reserve’s Brick Alley on Monday evenings.
The competition is affiliated with the NSW Touch Association and is entering its 35th year. The competition is run in two divisions being A and B-grade mixed. The A-grade competition is played at a cracking pace. There are six players, three male and three female, on the field for each team at any one time and substitutes are essential. The B-grade mixed competition is made up of teams with four females and two males on the field. Touch football has its roots in rugby league but it does not have the physicality or the contact. The game can be extremely fast and skilful and is a great way to keep fit. It can be a great pre-season option in readiness for your winter sport. The game is for all ages with a spread in the competition from 12 to over 60. Some teams are made up of families and friends and even teams from other sports. The association always welcomes new teams and players and will slot individuals into a team where possible. The aim of our warm-up games is to gauge the interest in the competition and also to coach the

Season kick off The season will kick off with four warm-up games on Monday evenings starting on September 4 from 6.00 pm. Teams will need to register by October 2 with the first round commencing on October 9. Games are played in two timeslots of 6.10 pm and 7.00 pm. The competition will consist of 16 rounds allowing for a two-week break over the festive season culminating in finals on March 26, 2018.

THE goAl Is sIMplE – As MANY goAls As possIBlE Players such as LeitchvilleGunbower’s Matt Perri have rekindled the lost era of star full forwards kicking 100 goals a season. SOPHIE BALDWIN caught up with the Bombers’ super boot to learn the secret of his success IT HAS been an outstanding – and standout – season for Leitchville- Gunbower full forward Matt Perri. The former wingman who resides in Melbourne has taken to kicking goals like a duck to water in the Heathcote and District Football League and this season cracked his ton in round 17 against White Hills. “I never played permanently in the forward line until I moved up to Leitchville,” Matt said. “I was always a wingman and played on the ball but I have to say playing in the forward line is now my favourite position,” he laughed.
Matt said the key to his goal-kicking success this season has been nothing other than good old fashioned practice. “I have put a lot of work into my kicking this pre-season and worked on my routine, it may be unorthodox but it works for me.” Last season Matt kicked 81 goals (including the
finals’ series) and the year before reached 64. This is Matt’s third season with the Bombers and he has certainly grown to love the club. He trains through the week at Ivanhoe with six other LGFNC players and travels up with two of his mates each weekend. “Butts (Matt Hawken) is a great coach and he puts his heart and soul into it. It would be great to win a premiership flag for him and all the other loyal players and supporters.”
The premiership flag has eluded the club for the past few years but Matt is hoping this year is the one. “We definitely have the playing group to take it all the way. “North Bendigo is the benchmark but if we can stay injury free and turn the tables on them we will certainly be in there with a chance. “We have a few tough games coming up so it will be interesting to see how we perform.”

roll Up, roll Up For THE sHow oF THE cENTUrY When the City of Echuca Bowls Club turns 100 next year it is planning to mark the occasion with style — including a weeklong celebration starting with a day of history on the green and wrapping up with a gala dinner
WITH ITS centenary year fast approaching (as in 2018) the City of Echuca Bowls Club is looking to celebrate its major milestone in style. Widely known as the ‘friendly club’ amongst the bowling community, president John Blair said the 200 members and the community are looking forward to the celebrations, which kick off with an open day Sunday, February 17, where bowlers are encouraged to turn up in the oldest bowling gear and bowls they can find for a day of fun — and a bit of bowling of course. There will be various tournaments throughout the week, including a corporate challenge where rival businesses and organisations will be pitted against each other. The week of celebrations will culminate in a gala dinner Sunday, February 24. “It will be a big week to capture 100 years of pretty strong competition, success on the green, friendships, fun, good times and many shared memories,” John said. It will also be a celebration of the quirkiness of bowls.
“Women weren’t allowed to play bowls at the start and then initially they were only allowed to play at certain times,” he said. “They had to adhere to strict uniform guidelines in the early 1980s and their dresses had to be a certain length below the knees. “But nowadays they can bowl in almost anything.” John said many people take on bowls thinking it will be an easy sport to pick up. “Bowls is extraordinarily challenging. It is a game of line and length and should be simple but it is very tricky — you can have it then all of a sudden it just disappears,” he laughed. “It also requires good hand and eye co-ordination, patience, competitive spirit and team work.” The club also has a focus on encouraging junior players and runs a junior development squad — the Campaspe Cannons — with which John has a hands-on involvement. “We work hard to encourage people, especially the
younger generation. I am an ex school teacher and I love to see the kids out on the green having fun and learning the game. “And bowls is a game for all ages. You don’t have to be super fit or super co-ordinated and it is a game that provides an opportunity for people to get involved who may not be interested in the mainstream sports such as football and netball.” Over the summer months the City of Echuca Bowls Club runs competitions most days of the week. Monday Twilight kicks off at 7 pm, Tuesday is ladies day from 10 am, Thursday from 12.30 pm is men’s pairs, Fridays are weekly pennant at 9.30 am and Saturdays are weekend pennants, which get underway at 1 pm.
