Echuca Steam Rally THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE AND HIS FRIENDS WILL BE STEAMING THEIR WAY THROUGH ECHUCA AT THE 51ST ECHUCA STEAM RALLY ON JUNE 7 AND 8. The steam rally will turn back the clock as steam traction engines and wagons, early farm machinery, portable steam engines, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles take centre stage. Organised by the Echuca-Moama Rotarians, the rally will showcase more than 550 exhibits. Crowd numbers have increased impressively in recent years, with last year’s golden jubilee attracting more than 13,000 people across the two days. While preserving the historical nature of the event by showcasing steam engines valued at more than $500,000 each, there will also be 14

a children’s area with a full-size steaming Thomas the Tank Engine, animal farm and face painting. The Pipe and Federal bands will again be performing and demonstrations and displays will be held across the weekend. Another reason to get excited is the return of world champion axeman Stephen Foster, who will take part in the axeman competition between Victoria and Tasmania on Saturday. Two world champions and five national champions will compete for top honours. The Echuca Steam Rally committee is also hopeful of attracting the Carlton Draught Clydesdales.
Echuca-Moama Rotary Club president Chrissy Weller said there was something for everyone at the steam rally. “It really is an exciting event,” she said. “We have a fully-moving grand parade, which is something unique in Australia. “To see 20 tonne, operational steam engines rolling by is a huge appeal for any age.” Mrs Weller has been part of the steam really committee for seven years and said it was unbelievable how much the event had grown. “The first couple of years we had around 8000 people, but it’s gone

far beyond that figure recently,” Mrs Weller said. “People enjoy seeing history and the fact is we have really worked hard to make it a family day. “It appeals to all age groups.” The steam really was first held in 1963 as the Echuca Steam, Horse and Vintage Rally, before a rebranding facelift in 2010. The family and enthusiast event is held on the Queen’s Birthday weekend at Rotary Park on Campaspe Esplanade, Echuca, from 9am to 4.30pm both days. “It’s Victoria’s largest blues festival and the unique part of it all is that it’s pretty much free.”
“Each year the festival has grown a little bit and last year’s was just tremendous,” Peter said.
The festival promises to continue to build in its 15th year, with Blues music filling more than 20 venues across Echuca-Moama, including newcomers the Harvest Hotel and Tindarra Resort. Peter said the music will be exactly that – Blues.

Winter Blues Festival music co-ordinator Hugo Armstrong, of Queenscliff’s Blue Train fame, will bring immeasurable festival and music management experience, while Wayne Jury heads up the Boot Camp management team.

GTO LOCKIN
STEP BACK IN TIME AT THE LOCKINGTON AND DISTRICT VINTAGE TRACTOR AND STATIONARY ENGINE RALLY. The annual rally includes a display of vintage tractors and stationary engines, trucks, veteran cars, motorcycles, farm machinery and implements. This year’s feature vehicles include a BMC tractor, a Morris car, a Kenworth truck and a lister engine. A grand parade will be held both days and a film will be screened on the Saturday night at Lockington Living Heritage
Centre. Market stalls will keep the family entertained and there will also be a hot roast lunch on Sunday. The rally is entering its 17th year and organiser Fenton Phillips has been there from the start. “Our first few rallies had about five engines, two cars and a couple of trucks,” Mr Phillips said. “Now we have 60 to 70 vintage and veteran cars, 150 stationary
vehicles and sometimes about 80 tractors.” Mr Phillips said he expected about 400 to 500 people to attend the event each day. The rally will be held from 10am on the Saturday and 9am on the Sunday at the park opposite Lockington Living and Heritage Centre. For information, contact Fenton on 0428 882 215.

‘‘With the advent of cooking TV shows everyone’s a chef. There’s an expectation we have to meet.’’ Moama Bowling Club head chef Peter Smith said his multicultural kitchen had allowed he and his team to add foreign flair to their menu. ‘‘We have Sri Lankan, Indonesian and Indian chefs who bring a little bit of their culture and skills to the kitchen,’’ Peter said. ‘‘It adds a lot more diversity to the menu. It’s a bonus.’’ Peter said he likes to mix up his menu when he can. ‘‘There’s a definitely a lot more Asian dishes, such as curries, meat dishes and casseroles,’’ he said.

‘‘We cater for a wide cliental, like golfers, locals and people from Melbourne, who expect good food,’’ Stephan said. ‘‘Many are well-travelled, but our dynamic team of chefs offer a unique menu.’’ Like MBC, Rich River boasts a polyglottic kitchen, comprising Brazilian, Indonesian, French, Filipino and English chefs. And while experimenting with flavours is fun, it is still critical to appease the customer. Just ask Moama RSL operations manager Barry Moyle.
Rich River Golf Club Resorthead chef Stephan Stanisic has also brought an international flavour to his kitchen.
‘‘We serve up a great variety without a fuss,’’ Bill said.
The French national, who has worked in kitchens across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia said his young and cosmopolitan team allowed for a modern-European menu.
‘‘There’s an expectation we have to meet.’’

‘‘With the advent of cooking TV shows everyone’s a chef.
Barry and head chef Bill Meagher have been working at Moama RSL for
eight and six years respectively and know the importance of maintaining old favourites while keeping the menu fresh — all at a competitive price of course. With a bevy of venues in town and a greater education in taste, Peter Smith said people expect a lot more for their dollar. Last year MBC dished out about 318,000 meals, equalling approximately 180 tonnes of food. Peter said the benefit of being a large restaurant allowed for more competitive prices. ‘‘Because we’re so big we can provide better cuts cheaper than most restaurants,’’ he said. Peter, who has been a chef for 30 years, said customers should never hesitate to offer feedback. ‘‘Any comment, whether they loved it or hated it, is wanted,’’ he said. ‘‘Gone are the days where chefs are going to come out and hit the
customer over the head with a frying pan for giving negative feedback. ‘‘We value it.’’ But while new and foreign delights emerge on the menu, there is no replacing traditional favourites. Echuca Workers and Services Club head chef Steve Rix knows that all too well. ‘‘We change the menu once or twice a year to keep it new, but you have to keep the regulars happy,’’ Steve said. ‘‘We have to be consistent with our food, while being better and faster at it. ‘‘You’d expect quality service at a restaurant and a club’s no different.’’ The club, like many, continues to offer daily specials and is mindful of competitive pricing. Steve said because the club was smaller than others it allowed for a more personal touch. ‘‘We still crumb our own schnitzels
‘‘We change the menu once or twice a year to keep it new, but you have to keep the regulars happy.’’
because elsewhere the volume would be too big,’’ he said. ‘‘Because we’re not selling 150 parmas a day we can personalise it more.’’ There is no doubt Echuca-Moama’s clubs are embracing the increasing consumer demands while continuing to recreate and provide everyone’s favourites.
‘‘We have Sri Lankan, Indonesian and Indian chefs who bring a little bit of their culture and skills to the kitchen.’’

Li'l Abner A FICTIONAL CLAN OF HILLBILLIES IS SET TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT THE PARAMOUNT WHEN THE ECHUCA MOAMA THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS LI’L ABNER. The production, co-directed by Raelene Dean and Heather Fullard, is based on the comic strip Li’l Abner by Al Capp, focusing on a broad spoof of hillbillies while incorporating the themes of big business corruption, gender issues and politics. The relaxed comedy is vastly different to the well-known productions the company has performed in the past, something Raelene is excited about. “Li’l Abner’s rarely performed in Australia, so we’re going out on a bit of a limb here,” she said.
“Our very loyal patrons have given us feedback that they’d like to see something different, so this is it.
Daisy is frustrated because Abner has failed to take any romantic interest in her.
“We think we’ve selected the right one. It’s bright and colourful and the cast is having a lot of fun with it.”
Meanwhile, Senator Fogbound, Dogpatch’s U.S. congressman, tells the citizens that Congress has declared Dogpatch the most unnecessary town in the U.S., and that it must be evacuated to be used as a nuclear bomb test site.
Set in the impoverished mountain village of Dogpatch, curvaceous Daisy Mae Scragg (played by Abbey Williams) is pursuing Li’l Abner Yokum (William Margetts), who despite being a handsome young man, is not interested in girls or employment.
Everyone is thrilled that Dogpatch has been picked out of the entire U.S. The production takes a series of comic twists and turns which will
keep audience enthralled. Performances will be held on May 23 (opening night) at 7.30pm, May 24 at 1.30pm and 7.30pm, May 25 at 1.30pm, May 29 and 30 at 7.30pm and May 31 at 1.30pm and 7.30pm. Opening night will also include supper for patrons and a meet and greet with the cast. Tickets cost $36 for adults, $31 for concession, $26 for children and $31 each for groups of 15 or more and can be bought at the Paramount.

The region’s best fish and chips It is official: Echuca’s Fish in a Flash is the best regional fish and chip shop in Victoria. The Age & Herald Sun newspapers bestowed the title on the 9-year-old business recently, after their search for the state’s best fish and chips. Fish in a Flash was also recognised for its battered prawns. Owner Paul Rowe was pleased with the honour. “It’s rather pleasing, as there are 3000 to 4000 fish and chip shops in Victoria ,’’ he said. Paul has been in the industry for over 20 years and consistency has been his ally. He buys from the same suppliers he has always used, with the fish filleted and delivered fresh. He credits his cookers with allowing him to present top quality produce. The cookers are computerised, enabling them to regulate the temperature of the oil crucial in producing quality fish & chips. Fish in a Flash uses only fresh fish and seafood. The batter has also proven a favourite among customers. The oyster bar is now a burgeoning part of the business, with oysters available grilled, natural or Kilpatrick, as well as in fritters. The shop is in Echuca’s historic precinct, so take your meal and eat it by the majestic Murray River. Alternatively, there are tables outside the shop for your convenience. Head to Fish in a Flash at 602 High Street, Echuca or phone 5480 0824.

ROCHESTER
YOUR JOURNEY DOESN’T HAVE TO END AT THE TOWN LIMITS. YOU’LL FIND PLENTY TO SEE AND DO IN ECHUCA-MOAMA’S SURROUNDING TOWNS. a series of murals depict the Barmah is the gateway to the World Rochester 23mins from Echuca
Rochester was home to Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman, legendary cyclist and later politician, whose statue off the main street is a popular stopping point for tourists. The Opperman Sports Museum is situated in the Shire Service Centre next to the Rochester Shire Hall in Mackay street. The museum contains personal memorabilia from Oppy’s sporting and political life including many photos, certificates, awards, trophies and the bike he rode over the last years of his life Several panels have now been installed showing the various sporting clubs and individuals who have contributed to Rochester’s sporting history A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old saleyards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. Rochester Historical Society has its headquarter in Rochester’s second public school building, which was built on the High St site in 1874. Campaspe Weir can be reached by travelling south on the Northern Hwy toward Elmore and turning left on to a gravel road after 9km.
Tongala
21mins from Echuca Tongala district was settled by squatters in the 1840s. Irrigation subsequently ensured the success of an intensive dairying industry. The agricultural legacy is captured at the Golden Cow, a community project which provides an insight for tourists, students, farmers and industry personnel into the dairy industry and associated environmental issues. In Tongala, 64

evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
Lockington
 33mins from Echuca
Lockington is a small country town set in irrigated dairy farming country. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in the landscaped park areas, take a walk following the self-guided heritage walk or choose a route past the mural in the pavilion, the rose garden and Lions flower clock. Bring the fountain to life in the lagoon area and keep your eyes open for the Locky Ness monster. On Sunday afternoons (or by appointment) call in to Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex for a trip down memory lane, while enjoying friendly hospitality.
Rushworth
53mins from Echuca At Rushworth’s fire lookout at Growlers Hill, the view covers the historic gold mining town, Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. The 24,300ha box ironbark forest is the largest of its type in Victoria, areas of it covering evidence of the district’s early mining activity. But Rushworth’s history is well preserved at the town’s museum, while historic buildings also remain the heart of the town. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard in the region, providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings. >>
Barmah
 31km from Echuca
Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is two-wheel drive friendly, but dusty when dry. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.
Pyramid Hill
55mins from Echuca Pyramid Hill is named after the adjacent granite hill with its many interesting rock formations. A cairn on the southern slopes commemorates the explorer, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who discovered and named the area in 1836 during his journey into Australia Felix. In spring many varieties of rare wildflowers may be found blooming among the rocks. Other interesting places to visit in the area include Terrick Terrick National Park and Mt Hope, as well as the town’s museum. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20km southeast of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. Scenic drives take visitors to grasslands, granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands and historical farming sites.
Leitchville
36mins from Echuca Leitchville is in the heart of wetlands, home to vast numbers of waterfowl and native animals and site of palaeontological finds of global importance. Kow Swamp, a few kilometres away, is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area is on the east side of the
lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing.
Torrumbarry
19mins from Echuca Torrumbarry offers a camping ground, picnic area, fish ladder and a heritage display and information centre at the weir. A lock operates at the weir, allowing passage for boats travelling up and down the Murray. The original weir was replaced in 1996, but major parts have been preserved of the original steel trestles, which were winched out of the river in times of flood.
Gunbower
29mins from Echuca Gunbower is a gateway to possibly Australia’s largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.
Cohuna
44mins from Echuca Cohuna is a peaceful town with the main street overlooking Gunbower Creek, a branch of the Murray River. Cohuna is the Gateway to Gunbower Island's many attractions, including fishing, boating, canoeing, birdwatching, four-wheel driving and walking tracks. The red gum forests and surrounds are home to 180 varieties of birds. The Gateway Information Centre in the middle of town is an ideal spot to gather further information. During the first weekend of March, the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge has events for all ages in 8km swim, walk,
bike rides, and running categories. The picturesque Cohuna Golf Course is the home course of PGA Tour star Stuart Appleby.
Heathcote
68mins from Echuca Heathcote boasts a range of historical and cultural attractions. The region is also developing a reputation for fine shiraz wines, as well as high quality varieties such as malbec and sangiovese. The visitor information centre is recommended if you wish to explore. Set among national and state parks, Heathcote’s history dates from the gold rush days. Destinations within the town precinct include Pink Cliffs, the historic old gaol, courthouse and council offices. Activities include bushwalking, cycling, orienteering, photography, birdwatching, gold prospecting and gemstone fossicking and wine tasting.
Check out the bird observatory, Picnic Point recreation area and the pioneer cemetery. Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre is also a must for wine tasting, buying local jams, honey and art and craft and to learn about Mathoura’s history. The Long Paddock tourist route stretches from Moama to Hay.

Deniliquin
 78km from Echuca
Kyabram
Set on the Edward River, Deniliquin offers a variety of activities for visitors, including bushwalking and water sports. The Peppin Heritage and Visitor Information Centre is the ideal starting point. Heritage walks take you past the town’s historic buildings and along the tree-lined river to the Island Sanctuary, where abundant bird life can be seen. Markets are held on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Waring Gardens. Famous for its Play on the Plains Festival and Ute Muster in October, Deniliquin also celebrates the Sun Festival and rodeo in January.
