Men’s Health Week
This week is about not missing a tune when it comes to mental, emotional and physical health.
International Men’s Health Week is a reminder to keep happy and healthy.
I! n tune with men’s health June rhymes with stay in tune. Stay in tune with your body, as it is International Men’s Health Month and, from June 13 to 19, it is International Men’s Health Week. This week is about not missing a tune when it comes to mental, emotional and physical health. This event has been in existence for 20 years now, with International Men’s Health Week launched after the second World Congress on Men’s Health in Vienna, Austria in 2002.
The theme of Men’s Health Week 2022 is building healthy environments for men and boys. This theme revolves around how to create physically, mentally and emotionally healthy environments when it comes to every aspect of life"—"at home, in the workplace and in social settings. It is about encouraging discussions around medical checkups and increasing awareness on health challenges faced by men.
Men’s Health Week is also about influencing institutions to develop health policies and initiatives when it comes to men’s and boys’ health, and creating services in tune with their needs. It is an opportunity to turn to your friends, brothers, fathers, cousins and colleagues, to ask them simply ‘how are you?’ and spark a potentially life-changing conversation.
Look out for your mates but don’t forget yourself It’s easy to spot if one of your friends, colleagues or family members is feeling under the weather. It’s obvious when they don’t eat as much, don’t sleep as much and don’t laugh as much as usual. Looking out for these symptoms is child’s play when it comes to someone else. It’s not as easy to do the same for yourself sometimes. So, ask yourself: am I sleeping enough, eating enough, exercising enough? Do I feel good at the moment? In today’s world, it’s so easy to get distracted by the millions of things on our plates at work, in social settings and in our family lives. But for these to go smoothly, we’re better off being the best versions of ourselves. And let’s be kind to ourselves, too"—"when life throws myriads of challenges at us, let’s take them one at a time. In this feature, you will learn new ways of keeping in check with your mental, physical and emotional health.

Speak up and reach out Maintaining one’s mental health is a tough gig, especially when it seems the odds are against you. This was the case for Warren Davies, a former dairy farmer turned motivational speaker. Like many other farmers, he suffered through floods and droughts on top of other stresses in his life — and it eventually led to his mental health spiralling out of control. With a lot of factors in play, the journey wasn’t easy for Warren. But it was through these struggles that he learnt resilience, persistence and determination — three words that now echo as his mantra. Now a motivational speaker, Warren often travels the country encouraging people to speak out about their mental health and stay strong in times of crisis, as he shares his major mental health lessons along the way. “My top three lessons that I learnt about mental health, is firstly communication is key,” Warren said. “Communicating how you’re feeling, what’s stressing you, what challenges you’re facing and sharing that with the people around you and with your support network is important. “Stay connected to your community and don’t isolate yourself. Isolation around mental health is you know, the biggest killer. Like once we start isolating ourselves, it becomes a real uphill battle because you disconnect yourself from your community. “My third lesson was seeking help, you know, particularly around my mental health. “When I first reached out around about my mental health, I probably didn’t treat it seriously enough, didn’t dedicate enough time to it, and I realised the biggest asset in my farming business and really my biggest personal asset apart from my family is me and I needed to dedicate a bit more time to my mental health because if I wasn’t travelling okay, I was no use to anyone.” The other issue that still stands with mental health, especially in men, is the stigma that comes with being open and talking about your struggles with others. But that doesn’t mean mental health shouldn’t be a discussion you have with your loved ones. Warren said the best way to get around this stigma was to make your close support network aware of your struggles before things get bad. “I think that’s really important to have those plans in place as that breaks down that stigma because, even though it’s not the real tough conversation, you’re already having conversations around mental health and that just opens the door for you.
“Communicating how you’re feeling, what’s stressing you, what challenges you’re facing and sharing that with the people around you and with your support network is important.”
“The stigma is reducing but it’s still there and regardless of the fact, it’s still really hard to reach out for help, particularly when you’ve already spiralled out of control.” To get in contact with Warren or to learn more about his story, find him at: www.theunbreakablefarmer.com.au ▯ If you or anyone you know needs support, find help at Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636 or Lifeline on 131 114.

Men’s Health Week The team at Worklocker — Leesa Hooppell, Tiharn Duncan, Sue McGregor, Leanne Kennedy and owners Matt and Jaime Lake — are ready to lend a hand with any workwear needs.
You can never run out of work boot options at Worklocker.
Find the perfect fit It’s been 21 years since Jaime and Matt Lake first opened their Worklocker store in Echuca. Since then, they’ve raised a family in the business and have undergone various changes, always making sure they’re adapting to the community’s needs. In addition to providing the community with all their workwear needs, Worklocker’s owners also pride themselves on their efforts in fundraising for community groups and events and sponsoring sports teams. “We’ve been a part of the community for a long time and we give
a lot back to the community with sporting teams and different community events,” Mrs Lake said. “Just because being in a small country town, to give back to community is why you have a small business so everyone can stay within the town and support each other.” Worklocker offers a wide range of services including: school, sports and corporate uniforms; trade and corporate wear; a wide range of work boots; and even men’s formal wear suitable for those fancier occasions. The business also specialises in embroidery and screen printing, services it offers as a sponsor to
seven football clubs in the area and other corporate businesses. With time comes change, and Worklocker has done just that with the expansion of the embroidery business with a new machine and new staff to make sure they keep up with the demand of their clients. “We’re expanding as a business into more of a warehouse retail store rather than just you buy and leave,” Mrs Lake said. No job is too big or small for Worklocker, and the staff would be happy to assist for any workwear needs. ▯ To contact the team, visit 130 Hare St, Echuca or phone 5482 1822.

Stop sleeping on the job If you’re experiencing extreme daytime tiredness, don’t brush it off as not enough sleep"—"it could be a sign of something more serious, like obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, resulting in repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the throat and causing breathing to stop or reduce. Daytime tiredness is one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnoea that pharmacist Clint Flanigan sees presented to him at Moama Village Pharmacy. “Daytime fatigue has the most impact on people’s lives than other symptoms,” he said. “It has a flow-on effect and there’s an increased chance of being involved in motor vehicle car accidents if you have sleep apnoea that’s left untreated.” Other symptoms of sleep apnoea can include snoring, increased blood pressure and increased blood sugar levels. Among other factors, this is an issue that’s more common in men than women, Mr Flanigan explained. “There’s an increase for sleep apnoea in people that have an increase in weight and obesity,
especially for people that carry weight around their stomach and neck. “The other one is there is an increase in apnoea for people who have pre-existing diabetes and difficult-to-control high blood pressure.“ Though the prospect of having sleep apnoea may seem daunting, there is a solution and Moama Village Pharmacy offers it. The pharmacy offers the most common form of treatment, which is the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine"—"it delivers pressurised air through the nose and/or mouth in the form of a mask, opening up the airways. Through a partnership with Air Liquide Healthcare, Moama Village Pharmacy offers 30 per cent off the recommended retail price for most CPAP machines and masks, and offers a 30-day trial period. The trial period costs $250, which covers machine hire, appointments and unlimited mask hire. If you’re experiencing daytime fatigue or any other symptoms of sleep apnoea, talk to Clint Flanigan and the team at Moama Village Pharmacy, 2 Perricoota Rd, Moama or phone on 5480" 9555. ▯ For more information on sleep apnoea and services, visit: www.moamapharmacy.com.au

Prioritise your dental health When it comes to your oral health, it’s always best practice to not leave the small problems to the last minute because more often than not, it’ll only make things worse. Dr Tony Lee from Campaspe Dental, Echuca knows all too well what happens when people put their dental health on the back burner. “If they haven’t been for five, six or even 10 years, there’s always a long list of things we need to do,” Dr Lee said. “I know it’s a bit boring but it’s important to get your teeth checked even when it’s a small problem and doing those yearly check-ups. Don’t wait until it gets drastic.” Dr Lee treats a variety of clients every day for different reasons and, despite there being very little disparity between men and women’s mouths, there are some issues he sees as more recurring in men than women. “We do see men often come in with a broken tooth and they’re most likely to get it pulled out rather than keep it, compared to women. It’s often from playing sport and riding bikes,” Dr Lee said. “Another one you do see more in men is snoring and issues like sleep apnoea. It definitely happens more in men that carry a bit of weight and are a bit older.” For issues like sleep apnoea, there is an easy solution the dentist can provide and it comes in the form of a mouthpiece, designed to bring the jaw forward and stop blocking in the airways. To get assistance with a sleep apnoea mouthpiece, a sleep study is required which can be found through your local GP, pharmacy or ear, nose and throat specialist. ▯ To book an appointment with Dr Lee or any of the other dentists at Campaspe Dental, phone 5482 1217 or call in at 525 High St, Echuca.

Safety is always in style From heat stress technology in clothing and footwear to changes in style, Jack Quinn — owner of Hip Pocket Workwear, Echuca — has seen all the changes in workwear across his 40 years of retail experience. “Workwear has changed from being something you had to wear to work and it didn’t matter how it felt, fitted or looked like, to now where people are conscious of getting a product that fits them well and if the products they’re wearing suit the environment and workplace they’re in,” Mr Quinn said. Hitting his 25th year since first opening the store, Mr Quinn has also noticed a shift in attitudes towards safety in the workplace, which he said despite being costly, was for the better. “Another major change is the focus employers place on workplace safety and it certainly comes at a cost but it’s better to have your workers safe and go home at night than have an accident because you’re not being diligent about your workplace environment,” he said. Heat stress products have also been a major change in the industry, with the design of clothing and footwear being introduced that specifically targets protection for workers against the heat.
This is just one of the many updated technologies in workwear that Hip Pocket Workwear offers customers. “Heat stress products are also important to people because sunburn and heat stress can knock people around,” Mr Quinn said. “In footwear, it’s the same thing. There’s developments happening all the time to provide footwear that is light, durable and doesn’t overheat your feet.” In addition to PPE equipment, clothing and footwear, Hip Pocket Workwear also offers corporate embroidery work; school and sport club uniforms; as well as health, hospitality and office industry clothing, ensuring there’s something for everyone. ▯ For any workwear needs, phone Hip Pocket Workwear on 5480 1027 or visit 173 Pakenham St, Echuca.

Time for some auto therapy There’s nothing quite as satisfying as finally getting those headlight bulbs replaced after they slowly started dimming months ago or changing over those windscreen wipers because the old ones started falling apart. Maintaining your car doesn’t have to be a hard task and Autobarn Echuca makes sure of that. Not only can you find the parts you need — from seat covers to performance parts — the team at Autobarn can also help you with any fitting needs, according to owner Matt Newton. “We offer an electrical fitting service, fittings for roof racks and seat covers, safety checks of wipers and making sure your globes are working,” he said. “We also help a lot of people add on electrical accessories like audio and UHFs and brake controllers.” Keeping your car in shape is important and for a lot of people, it’s a way to take a break and maintain their mental health. “We have a lot of men and women who enjoy working on
their cars and project vehicles and for some of them, it’s a stress relief to get out in the shed and tinker away,” Mr Newton said. So if you’re in the need for some spare parts or minor servicing, trust your car in the hands of people who know what they’re doing and see the team at Autobarn at 182 Annesley St, Echuca or call them on 5480 2700. “Give us a call or call in so you can physically show us the problem and obviously if we can help you out to rectify your problem, we can do that or refer you to someone else to fix the problem,” Mr Newton said.
Autobarn Echuca offer a range of products for cars, including speaker and audio systems.
Jason McCann, Cam Muir, Matt Newton and the rest of the team at Autobarn Echuca are always ready to help customers with their car needs.

Men’s Health Week Benny Walker holding Matthew Wickham to the ground in a dominant position.
Good for body and brain Benny Walker is a father, musician and businessman but in addition to this, he’s also a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a form of martial arts that centres on ground fighting, submission holds and gaining a dominant position over the opponent. Training at Wickham’s Martial Arts Centre in Echuca, Mr Walker has been working towards his blue belt for two-and-a-half years. Being a combat sport, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is seen as primarily physical.
However, Mr Walker said critical thinking was just as big a part of it. “I have to combine my brain and my body to think in real time about what my opponent is trying to do and what I’m doing to them,” he said. This deep concentration required for the sport also serves as a form of meditation for Mr Walker, proving to be a plus for managing his mental health.
Matthew Wickham demonstrating a classic Brazilian jiujitsu dominant position over Benny Walker. “When you’re on the mat, you’re trying to learn a technique or apply it and not get strangled by someone. So, the only thing you think of is jiu-jitsu and nothing else. “I see it as meditation so everything that’s going on in my life just goes away and I just focus on that moment. “It’s a safe sport where you can spar every time and there’s no danger of concussions and we also get to put our skills to the test in a real way every time we train.” Thanks to Wickham’s Martial
Arts Centre and owner Matthew Wickham, Mr Walker is able to practice jui-jitsu at all levels and work towards his black belt. “We’re very fortunate to have a coach like Matt in a small community like Echuca-Moama,” Mr Walker said. “If you’re going to walk into a place that’s beginner friendly with an opportunity to become advanced in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Wickham’s Martial Arts Centre is as good a place to start as anywhere
else in the world and we’re very fortunate to have that in the community.” The centre also offers adult, teenage and children’s classes in BJC muay thai and Zen Do Kai karate. ▯ If you’re interested in trying out Brazilian jiu-jitsu or any other martial arts, contact Wickham’s Martial Arts Centre by phone on 5482 5362, email info@wickhamsmartialarts.com or visit 81 Service St, Echuca.

The Aussie Outback Store is now offering fishing products to customers.
Explore the great outdoors If you’re looking for a change in scenery or a break from reality, there’s nothing like a good camping and four-wheel drive adventure to lift your spirits. Aussie Outback Store owner Adrian Flett knows first-hand how freeing a camping trip can be and is something he’s observed other people have appreciated over the past few years.
A huge range of camping and 4WD accessories are available at the Aussie Outback Store. “It’s good to get out to the bush by yourself and clear the head or spend time with mates and family,” he said. “During COVID-19 there was a lot of people setting up caravans obviously worried about travelling out of the country. “So, there was a rush in caravan accessories as everyone was travelling in this country rather than going overseas.” The Aussie Outback Store provides a variety of 4WD and camping accessories and
has recently expanded its range to include fishing gear. It also offers a niche range of hunting accessories like gun bags, spotlights, torches, knives, rifle slings and belts. Some of the Aussie Outback Store’s most popular accessories at the moment are diesel heaters (perfect for those cold nights in the caravan), driving and LED lights, and the wide range of 12-volt caravan fridges. So if you’re looking for some head space,
then some time outdoors might be exactly what you need!—!and the team at the Aussie Outback Store has the know-how to get you there. “Call in and have a look. Cycling classes are a big hit at FitMob Echuca.
Try out the variety of fitness classes that FitMob has to offer.
Start some healthy habits Keeping motivated to go to the gym can be a real challenge, and one that a lot of people struggle with. Owner of FitMob Shannon Fink understands the feeling and, coming from the fitness industry, he sees it happen too often. But there are ways around it. “It helps to have a personal train-
er, group classes or a person there to keep you accountable and motivated instead of throwing around weights by yourself,“ Mr Fink said. “Take that first step because at the end of the day without making a change, you’ll see no change. “You need to be willing to take that first step and it could be with us or with a program or personal training—"there’s plenty of avenues
to do, but you’ve got to want to do it for yourself.” Mr Fink also recommends exercising three to five times a week for 45 minutes each session as the general rule of thumb when it comes to establishing a regular cycle and keeping fit. To keep that motivation up, FitMob offers personal trainers and a wide range of programs for
its clients"—"from spin classes to Olympic lifting, and from yoga to mums and bubs classes. The business will be expanding its services to Moama, with the opening of a new 24/7 gym on the horizon for January next year. The Moama gym will only be a 24/7 gym with a focus on strength and cardio equipment, with fitness classes continuing in Echuca.
However, Mr Fink and the team will instead be including senior and disability programs, with a groundlevel, easy-to-access building once the gym is built. ▯ If you’re interested in joining FitMob or looking for more information, visit the website at www.fitmobechuca.com.au or phone 0400! 587! 189 or call into 1/157 Hare St, Echuca.
