insider’s look
Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort With 45 holes, it is Australia’s largest public access golf course, with two substantially differing 18 holes courses - The Murray and The Lake, both Par 72. Then there’s the Par 33 Blue Executive Nine. Mostly flat, the majestic Murray Course carves its way through natural bush and river gums. Beside the Murray River on the fifth hole, lagoons and two lakes must be negotiated on the majestic, well bunkered course. The lovely Lake Course, with generous undulating fairways, contains three lakes which come into play on four holes, is also heavily bunkered and has views to Lake Mulwala. With its three interesting Par 3s, The Executive Nine is relatively short but suits both novice and serious golfers. All of the Murray Course’s fifth hole, a not-overly-long 470m Par 5, runs along the Murray River, with a big tree in front of the slightly elevated green. Big Red Gum trees extend right along the right hand side of the fairway and there’s the sheer beauty of the river on the left as well as more big gum trees. Understand the pin position and green’s slope and you’re in with a chance.
Black Bull Golf Club Yarrawonga Located on the edge of Lake Mulwala, the superb 18-hole Black Bull Golf Course winds its way through the Silverwoods Resort. Man-made waterways come into play on 12 holes. Dramatic and stylish bunkering, wide fairways and many risk/reward holes will excite and challenge golfers. The Black Bull greets you upon entering the 4th hole, the challenging three-hole Bull Ring - Black Bull Golf Course’s version of Amen Corner. The Bull Ring comprises a testing 179m Par 3 over a considerable carry of water, water all down the right hand side of the 353m Par 4, 5th number one rated, massive 390m Par 4, 6th hole. Black Bull’s 18th hole epitomises golf on the Murray River, finishing right on Lake Mulwala. This challenging 478m Par 5 has water all down the left hand side, some fairway bunkers and an increasingly spectacular view of Lake Mulwala as you get to your target.

Marcus Fraser Born and bred in Corowa, Marcus set the Rio Olympic record in 2016 with a magical, eight-underpar 63 first round, a record he now shares after his amazing, fifth-finishing world position at the Olympics.
Corowa Golf Club This picturesque 27-hole golf course comprises a make-up three beautiful 18-hole courses - the Par 72 Old Course, Par 73 West Course and Par 73 East Course. The gently undulating Old Course along the Murray River contains many bunkers and huge Red Gum trees which come into play on many holes. Well bunkered and with impressive lakes, the ‘new’ (37 years old, and well established trees from greenfield site) nine comprising half of East and West Courses, stretching 3393m, is one of the longest in Australia. Depending on pin position and conditions, use anything from a sand wedge to 5 iron on the 4th, 127m, Par 3 hole with its imposing 66m long green. The 133m Par 3, 12th hole on the Old Course symbolises everything about Corowa Golf Course: the river gums, the river and well bunkered greenside. When you look at the green and past the green, you look right down the Murray River and feel as though you’re in another world.
Cobram Barooga Golf Club Thirty-six holes, Old and West Courses, both Par 72. Short by modern standards, the charming 6176m long Old Course is challenging with its narrow fairways and fast running small greens. Examples of challenges are the eighth, short Par 3 and the three longish Par 3s. But accuracy helps on all holes. The 6287m long glorious and contrasting West Course has wider fairways and larger greens, and is also well bunkered. It suits the good driver. If you aren’t, it pays to be a good up and down player on the Par 4s. The Old Course’s challenging 5th hole, a dog leg right 385m Par 4 with blind tee shot on this ‘Bell Hole’ requires a nicely shaped left to right shot from the tee which can be helped with some downhill run. Still requires a strong shot to reach the green which has a false front - you have to land the ball well on to the green to avoid a roll off.

BMW Senior Victorian Open success Three wonderful Murray River golf courses, a host of well-known senior professionals and increased prize money has led to another successful Shepparton BMW Senior Victorian Open in Yarrawonga and Mulwala. Held in early February for the second time in 2017 the event was headed up by champion golfer and eventual winner Peter Senior who lead an impressive list of marquee players never seen in the region before. Senior was joined by household names Terry Price, Mike Harwood, Rodger Davis, Peter O’Malley and Steven Conran. The professionals were also joined by TV personalities Sam Newman and Billy Brownless. PGA Tournament Director Andy Rogers described the field as one of the strongest fields ever assembled for this event. Senior fired three sub-par rounds of 69 at Black Bull Golf Course, another 69, on Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort’s Murray Course, and a superb Lake Course 67 for an overall 11-under-par 205 on the three Par 72 courses to win the 2017 Shepparton BMW Senior Victorian Open by four shots.
Brain of Shepparton BMW as the major sponsor. Thanks to all other sponsors, the players and spectators,” Senior said PGA Tournament Director Andy Rogers thanked everyone involved in the running of the big event. “They are two superb venues in fantastic condition,” he said. “Special thanks to Cameron Buckingham and Chris Burgess (course superintendents at Black Bull and Yarrawonga/Mulwala respectively) for the conditions of courses - please pass on our thanks to all the staff concerned. “To Aaron (Dealer Principal Aaron Brain) and Shepparton BMW, your support has been phenomenal. We love coming here. It has a real tournament feel. It was a great field this year. “The scoring was reflective of the great condition of the courses with nine scoring under par, the way you set them up.” Aaron Brain spoke favourably on behalf of all sponsors. One of several elite amateur golfers at Shepparton BMW, he added: “We look forward to next year.” The successful event will again be held in Yarrawonga Mulwala in February, 2018.

The local waterskiing industry continues to make waves
NOW IT’S SHOWTIM By
jared loughnan
From the beaches lining the Murray River around Tocumwal and Cobram, to the open waters of Lake Mulwala and anabranches of Bundalong and Corowa, water skiing on the Murray has been a favourite recreational pastime for many people over the decades.
But a major investment by the club in 1993 to build an ‘all-weather’ ski park with two interconnecting lakes provided the team with a world class facility that would take the club to new heights.
It is believed water skiing was first introduced in Mulwala in 1949 by two local water skiers at the prompting of local identity and ultimately the developer of Cypress Gardens, Mr Bert Foster.
President at the time, Max Kirwin, of whom the ski park is now named after, said the park would increase the ability for the club to develop more champions and provided the club with a valuable drawcard in attracting national and international events to the area.
Soon after show skiing also became popular and first appeared on Lake Mulwala in January 1963 when local exhibition skiers Fred and Verna Haebich put on a successful “Gala Ski Festival” in front of more than 1,000 spectators.
“We are now on the verge of becoming a world renowned ski club and our ski park is a great engineering achievement and a fantastic facility,” Mr Kirwin said. Today the club’s facilities rival any other water ski club in the world. The club has hosted many regional, state, national and international events such as the 1995 World Disabled Water Ski Championships, the 2004 World Barefoot Championships and more recently the Junior World Water Ski Championships in 2013 which have all put Mulwala and the region under the world spotlight.
The popularity of water skiing along the Murray River then soared in the 1970s and 1980s but the spotlight was soon focused on Mulwala where a world class facility and professional ski show team was established. The Mulwala Water Ski Club has been the main driver heavily investing in the sport, both in facilities and developing their talented ski show team.
The forever popular summer ski shows also started in the Ski Club lagoon harbour in 1993 and have since attracted tens of thousands of spectators to witness the spectacular stunts and talented show skiing. Today the ski shows attract more than 30,000 spectators over each busy summer period.
A testament to the success of the Mulwala Water Ski Club Show Team came last year when 28 of its member skiers were chosen for the 35 member Australian team that finished second in the Ski Show World Championships held in the US. An incredible effort for a ski team that started with very little in 1983, just one year after the clubhouse opened its doors, and has since thrived on the back of loyal voluntary members, directors and a handful of dedicated professionals.

A current ski coach who has been a big part of ski show scene since 1998 is Brant Ryan. Mr Ryan first skied in the show as a young lad in the mid-1980s and returned to Mulwala, after skiing all over the world with wife Kathy. They made the tree change back to the area to work with close friends and fellow ski professionals Mark and Carol Robinson. The Ryans, who now have two of their own daughters skiing in the team, Tess aged 10 and Izzy age 7, have since assisted in producing and coaching in the show alongside Water Ski Coordinator Peter O’Neill.
businesses that have been directly set up around the industry and some of the best water-skiers in the country.
Mr Ryan said the show has evolved over the years but still aims to develop the club’s juniors.
“Woodlands hosts some of the best wakeboarders in Australia in Chloe Mills and Travis Osborne, International slalom star Nick Adams calls Lake Moodamere home and ski club member and Junior World Trick Champion Josh Bryant trains here regularly just to name a few,” Mr O’Neill said.
“The development show is very much the same as the old style ski show when it first began featuring skiers of all ages. It’s a great way to learn new skills while still performing in front of spectators. The main demonstration show usually features around a dozen or more experienced athletes.
“And now we have an internationally famous water ski show team.”
“Over the years we quickly went from using professionals to now using all our own skiers in the senior show. Now we have 40 skiers aged anywhere from around seven to 40.
The sport of show skiing has become more popular in recent years and in 2011 the Australian Show Ski Nationals were started in Mulwala. After finishing second in Mulwala and third in Perth the Mulwala Ski Club Ski Team then regrouped and dominated the competition in Melbourne in 2015.
“Each year we have some more experienced skiers move on but we continue to develop our new juniors who then step up and work their way into more difficult disciplines.”
On the last weekend of March this year the talented team, with many of its members fresh from competing in the World Championships in the US last year, will look to defend their title when they host the 2017 Australian Show Ski Nationals at the Ski Club’s World Renowned Max Kirwin Ski Lakes.
Ski Club president for the last 15 years, Len Langford, has been involved in the water skiing area of the club for more than 25 years and said the main driver behind the club’s skiing success is the hard work of many volunteers. “It’s hard to list everyone but the club has come a long way on the back of these dedicated people and today we have more than 200 skiing members, a world class facility and world class ski team,” Mr Langford said. Ten times National Barefoot Champion Peter O’Neill moved his life and ski school to Yarrawonga Mulwala and now spends his time on the water coaching the next run of Australia’s best and brightest. “People go to Torquay to surf, they head to the Grampians to hike, and they come to Yarrawonga Mulwala to water-ski,” Mr O’Neill said. “Over the whole region the water-skiing industry has blossomed, boasting the biggest ski club in the world,

Made with Love By Racheal Willett
With a quick wit and an easy smile Deb Van Corler changes the subject from herself to the work of others without skipping a beat. It’s a well-rehearsed habit.

he deflects praise readily with a sarcastic bite, or a rough word or two, rather than stand in the spotlight. Only when talking about her Turban Angels and her dearlyloved mum Edie does the exterior soften. With tears but a blink or two away, she talks readily about the still painful loss of her mum little more than a year ago.
It was her mum’s battle with bowel cancer, and subsequent treatment and hair loss, that set Deb on the path of a project that now consumes her every day – Made With Love Chemotherapy Turbans.

patients of all ages and from all works of life, Debbie admits there is a little bit of her mum’s love in each and every one. Edie was 80 when, in 2010, unusual weight loss and other symptoms previously stubbornly ignored (according to Deb) led to a diagnosis of bowel cancer. Living alone in Wodonga and enduring treatment, regular trips and stay overs from daughter Deb led to the inevitable suggestion that her mum move to Yarrawonga to live with her and husband Eddie. Living under the one roof, it was Eddie who assumed the role of daily carer for his motherin-law, an oddity explained simply by Deb as – “that’s just who he is, he is amazing”. “The things that he did, day in and day out for mum, I couldn’t have done it,” Deb said. “He cared for her, cleaned her up, brought

all sorts of coloured jellies home from work because she loved jelly. “And he did all of that because when my dad was dying many years earlier he asked Eddie to look after my mum. “He said he would, so that’s what he did.” Deb’s mum Edie was well, for the most part, “if you didn’t know she had cancer you wouldn’t be able to tell”, Deb said. But one thing she couldn’t abide was losing her hair. “In the early days when she was still living in Wodonga I said to her, ‘geez mum your hair’s getting a bit thin’ and she replied ‘yeah well its bloody falling out’,” Deb said. “Eddie had one of the CanTeen bandannas because he liked to support them and he gave it to her to wear. She loved it. “She bought a $300 wig – wore it once and hated it. So I thought there had to be something easier for her to wear.” Deb began researching chemotherapy turbans and, after being unable to source one
locally, found they cost $30 each to purchase online. “I thought, ‘bugger that, I’ll make one’,” Deb said. “So I found a pattern and I made one. It worked and mum loved it.
“They became my Turban Angels – and now, they’re like family, they’re my girls.” “And 6500 turbans later – the rest, as they say, is history.” Of course it was a little more complicated in reality. Deb began making turbans in all shades of the rainbow for her mum. Colour co-ordinating them to her clothes and delighting each time Edie picked a new one to wear. It wasn’t long before Edie’s turbans became a local talking point and, sure enough, Deb started getting requests to make them for others.
A Yarrawonga Lions Club member of 18 years, Deb enlisted the help of her fellow Lions and their partners, to establish a project to make and supply turbans, free of charge, to hospitals and clinics nearby. “I started out sewing with five ladies,” Deb said. “First I handed out instructions and then we made a pattern. “Ten minutes on an overlocker and we’d have a turban done. We got better at it, we got faster and more ladies joined in. “They became my Turban Angels – and now, they’re like family, they’re my girls.” Deb is affectionately referred to as ‘Boss Cocky Turban Mum’ and she marshals the services of the Angels to sew, sort, package and distribute turbans of all shapes, colours and sizes. They are delivered to hospitals, clinics and treatment centres in across Australia and internationally to England, Fiji, New Zealand, Denmark, Wales and West Virginia. ‘Angel Freight’ is provided by whoever is

Across the world, every day, someone going through one of the most difficult times of their lives is offered a free, Yarrawonga Lions Club Made with Love Chemotherapy Turban. Deb couldn’t be more proud and she knows Edie would be too. “When this all started mum would sit with me at home and help me sew,” Deb said.
“There’s a little bit of mum in every turban we make – that’s enough for me.” “She was so proud of what we were doing. She loved being part of it. And she still is now – her photo is on the front of the letter that goes out with every box of turbans.” In 2016 Deb’s mum lost her battle with cancer. When she died she had 32 chemotherapy
turbans in her cupboard. “I didn’t keep any of them. I didn’t need to,” Deb said. “There’s a little bit of mum in every turban we make – that’s enough for me.” Now, every Tuesday, the Lions Club shed at the Yarrawonga Showgrounds buzzes with the sounds of a dozen or more Turban Angels chatting away amid the whir of sewing machines and overlockers. They sew, they chat and laugh, they poke fun at each other, and all the while they know they are bringing a little bit of sunshine to the recipients of every turban they sew. “I never thought for a minute about stopping – not even after mum died,” Deb said. “All these Angels, they’ve been touched by cancer in some way, this is a release for them, a chance to talk and laugh. “The friendships we have are unbreakable. They’re my Angels and it’s my job to look after them now. “I couldn’t stop even if I did want to.”

n just 200 years, Australia’s wine industry has grown from a few small plantings to an industry renowned throughout the world for quality, innovation and depth. In fact, Australia is consistently one of the top ten wine producing countries in the world and is one of the few countries that produces every one of the major wine styles. Almost every climate and soil type can be found here and this means that winemakers
are able to produce all of the major wine types, from red wines to white wines, fortified wines and sweet wines to sparkling wines. But at Pfeiffer Wines in Wahgunyah, it is not just the climate and variety of their soil that makes their wine special – it is the story behind it. Pfeiffer Wines is a warm and passionate second generation wine-making family, led by father and daughter team, Chris and Jen Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer Wines has been a dedicated and inspiring leader of the wine sector for almost four decades and Chris Pfeiffer has almost 50 years of industry experience and in 2012 was awarded an OAM for his tireless service to the sector. Jen Pfeiffer is regularly called upon to judge wines and chair wine shows throughout Australia and provides WSET and university lectures on the fortified category to the next generation of winemakers and sommeliers.

inding up a long, curvy driveway, visitors take a scenic trip through the region’s agricultural landscape before arriving at the homestead of historic property Langi Oonah, a bed and breakfast east of Barooga. Built in the late 1920s, the main homestead retains its beautiful period charm and has five bedrooms, both in the bed and breakfast and owner’s areas. Langi Oonah was originally part of the Boomanoomana Station, which was settled in the 1850s. It was a mixed farming enterprise, before the original Boomanoomana property (thought to be between 700 and 1200 hectares) was split up in the 1870s, with one part eventually becoming the township of Barooga. Wool and wheat were the main products grown and paddle steamers made it up to the station to collect the produce to take back to the cities. With its high-ceiling old-world rooms, spaciousness and extensive gardens, the triple-brick Langi Oonah Homestead retains the atmosphere of the Federation age. Now under the stewardship of current owners John and Wendy Mitchell, who took over the property six years ago, Langi
Oonah is flourishing as a bed and breakfast and function centre. They’ve spent years transforming the gardens and renovating the house and cottage to highlight its heritage. Despite its country charm, the property has a few metropolitan secrets up its sleeve: the tennis court that overlooks the river is from the famed courts of Kooyong. The imposing black lanterns which mark the homestead’s official entry are also a little piece of the city’s history transported to the country: they’re from Little Lonsdale Street in Melbourne. A rough patch of exposed brickwork on a hill at the back of the homestead is believed to be a resting station for Cobb & Co coaches, which passed through Langi Oonah. Just past the property is a quaint cottage with its own historic roots. Debate is ongoing, but the building was believed to have been built at a similar time or before the homestead, and served as a school. It retains the original corrugated iron wall sheeting, now transformed into a historic feature in the cottage’s lounge room, which has been added. Some believe it may have been a home for workers and their families who were

building the Langi Oonah homestead. Figures published by Tourism Research Australia show that the bed and breakfast industry is on the rise, with the guesthouse, bed and breakfast sector posting a 19 percent increase to 3.5 million nights in the year to June 2016. The research shows strong growth for domestic overnight holidays, and that’s something Mr Mitchell has also experienced. “We have visitors coming from all over the region – from Shepparton, from Tocumwal, as well as visitors from further away like Melbourne,” he said. “They can have a holiday and relax knowing they’re not too far from home.” Langi Oonah is booked out most weekends of the year and throughout the week as well, with word of mouth quickly spreading the secret of the gem that’s just a stone’s throw away. The picturesque setting has also become a favourite for brides-to-be from near and
far, the lush, green gardens overlooking the river setting are perfect for wedding ceremonies. The Kooyong tennis court also comes in handy here, when it’s transformed into a marquee area for receptions and events. Ironically, Mr Mitchell first saw the

property decades ago when travelling up the river with a friend. “I saw the house and thought it looked amazing,” he said. “I never would have imagined years later that I’d be back here and own the property.” ■
The original walls remain as a feature in the cottage.

ippy was a beloved Belmore Street trader with perhaps the most unique shop to be found this side of the black stump – a fishing tackle shop cum barber cum tobacconist cum tennis and badminton racquet re-stringer. Tippy’s grandfather bought a men’s hairdressing business from James Bull in 1919, the store passed from Tippy’s grandfather to his uncle, then onto his father then finally onto Tippy himself who started working at the store doing his hairdressing apprenticeship in 1958. “My grandfather was very keen on fly fishing and passed this love of fishing onto my dad who passed it onto me,” Tippy said. “To be honest, it was dad hunting and fishing that fed us and put a roof over our heads.” Tippy is now teaching his grandson, nieces and nephews the art of landing a big cod. “The techniques of cod fishing have changed over the years,” he said. “We used to row a boat and use a big aeroplane spinner on a heavy cord line but now we trawl for cod using oar-gee lures; I am not too big on spinner bait or live bait. “I try to catch other fish now, have gone off cod a bit,
I have had my fair share of big ones so now I look out for different sorts.” The biggest cod Tippy has landed was around 120 pounds which he caught near the traffic bridge in Yarrawonga. “I had him on my line a few times over several different days before I finally landed him,” he said. “I had actually hooked a nice small cod and was reeling that one in and suddenly the line stopped and initially I thought I must have gotten snagged, but I kept on winding and up comes this massive cod with the small one in his mouth.”

Perhaps not for the faint-hearted is fishing for Mako sharks which, according to Tippy, are liable to do “all kinds of things so you have to watch them”. “Mako sharks are really crazy,” he said. “My handy tip for this species is if a Mako approaches your boat don’t frighten it and absolutely don’t try to hook it until it starts swimming away from the boat. “They tend to jump into the air and if they do that close to the boat they are more than likely to land in it. “I have actually been stalked by a Mako shark. “It came right up and bit the motor and went for the burley bucket – they bite anything just to see if it is edible. “This particular shark caught sight of my young grandson who was leaning over the edge of the boat and it swung itself around to have a go at him; it was quite scary at the time.” Locally, Tippy’s ‘secret’ fishing spot isn’t that much of a secret. “Just drop a line in anywhere on the lake,” he said. “If you can follow the edge of the deep water and have a little patience you’ll be right. “Only keep what is legal and what you want to eat and throw everything else back. “It is a wonderful pastime and it is something that absolutely everyone can do – young, old, men, women, all abilities, all inclusive – nothing else comes close.”
“To be honest, it was dad hunting and fishing that fed us and put a roof over our heads.” If Tippy has a quiet few minutes he will go and throw a line in along the Lake Mulwala foreshore and try to catch a yellow belly, or golden perch. “Yellow bellies love shrimp and if you put a hook in underneath the trees at the lake you are almost guaranteed to catch a nice fish,” he said. “Flathead and Barramundi are beautiful eating fish and I try to do a few trips away each year to Hervey Bay, Narooma, San Remo or Bemm River, there is such a huge variety of fish you can catch and they are all good fighters. “Narooma is a really wonderful spot and I have gone fishing for marlin there, the biggest I have caught so far weighed in at 95kg and it took me an hour and a half to wind in.”

MRL The transformation of Buller Wines MURRAY RIVER LIVING
Edition 1 - 2017 • FREE
From a rich wine-making history to new owners and fresh ideas, Buller Wines in Rutherglen is set to become the new face of an age-old industry. The physical transformation of Buller Wines is ongoing as work continues on their new restaurant and facilities. However, the real transformation began when in 2013 the winery, rich with 100 years of history, fell into difficult times and risked closure. Thankfully the business was purchased by a north-east Victorian family who themselves have been in the region for generations and who have a wide range of business interests. The new owners saw the value and beauty of the historical Buller Wines and set about enacting a plan to rebuild the business. The transformation began with the restoration of the 100 year old vines and planting of an incredible 10,000 new ones. This was coupled with the establishment of a modern, efficient and competitive winery which could run with reduced cost and improved quality through the introduction of state-of-the-art processing, bottling and labelling equipment. A focus on storage and logistics saw the construction of a new warehouse facility and finally, there was only one thing left‌ Buller Wines set about developing a world-class wine and food experience. This became a reality with the development of one of the largest restaurants in the region, seating more than 150 and serving contemporary Australian food with a focus on local ingredients. The new restaurant provides for a variety of events and functions with indoor and outdoor dining, catering for intimate dinners, to weddings and large scale events. The transformation of Bullers Wines truly is a story to behold. It is not only unique to the region, but to the wine industry, which all too often resorts to wineries being closed and years of heritage being lost as vines are ripped from the ground. Instead Bullers Wines begins anew, with a vision and focus for the future coupled with a rich history that pays homage to the past.

The island is home to more than a thousand pelicans that utilise the island’s unique size and location to breed. Pelican’s raise their chicks on the island for several months in a crèche like environment until they are able to fly. For this reason the island provides a safe haven from predators such as foxes. Shallow waters around the island also keep the human interference from boats and noise to a minimum. The land opposite the island is private farm land which

While many people associate pelicans with coastal areas, they are in fact far more widespread, and breed in large colonies in inland areas. The island was spared during the 2013 tornado that ripped through Denison County and Bundalong leaving a trail of destruction. Remarkably only several hundred metres before hitting the island the tornado split in two and avoided the island and the adjacent private farm house. The freak storm would have wiped out many of the birds on the island if it had continued its singular path.

MRL Cobram Anglican Grammar School MURRAY RIVER LIVING
Edition 1 - 2017 • FREE
The future of education at Cobram Anglican Grammar School is bright, with a strong academic program and facility development plan in place to ensure the best education outcomes. The school has grown immensely in the past few years, but still ensures it maintains the close connection between the teaching staff and the student body and its focus on holistic education. “As we’ve grown, we ensure we pair quality education with a Christian education – we offer both quality academic education with pastoral care,” principal Steve Gale said. “The school offers a holistic approach to education: Our commitment to academic success; through thorough curriculum delivery in core subjects like maths, science, English, history, geography, RE and language is well documented. “In addition, students’ spiritual wellbeing is recognised and fostered through our close ties with the local Anglican Church, its community, and the priest Rev Maryann Leonard, who also serves as chaplain at the school. “Further, our determination to offer a broad range of practical subjects, such as metalwork, woodwork, music, textiles, foods, agriculture and other specialist subjects ensures that an extremely broad curriculum, offering opportunities to all students is available. “We offer an enormous range of subjects in our middle school elective program.”
Mr Gale said increasing enrolment numbers was reflective of the school’s academic success, especially with ATAR results. In the 2016 school year, Year 12 VCE students recorded a number of impressive ATARS, topped with the school dux recording an excellent score of 95.45. “These results show the quality of education offered at Cobram AGS, and are cementing us as a legitimate education provider from Prep to Year 12,” Mr Gale said. “It is also in part reflective of the top quality staff we have here at the school, both continuing educators and those new to Cobram Anglican Grammar.” The school opened its doors in 2000 with 26 students in Years 5, 6 and 7, but has grown substantially to more than 325 children, studying right from the Foundation year right through to Year 12. The school has enjoyed almost 50 per cent student growth in the past three years. “We believe we’re seeing the growth in enrolments because parents are seeing happy students: happy in friendships, happy in pastoral support and happy in educational opportunities,” he said. “In 2015, we entered into a relationship with the Anglican School Commission
56
and that’s allowed the school to grow considerably.” The school has just announced plans for a $1.4 million dollar development, thanks to the commission and funding from the Victorian Government’s Block Grants Authority. Mr Gale said the new building will provide dedicated music, performing arts spaces, and more technology facilities with plans to create spaces for metalwork and automotive practice. “It takes the school to the next level and adds to the range of specialty subjects and learning opportunities we offer.” The current developments are just the first stage in a six-part Master Plan for the school, which aims to place the school in a position for increased academic success and learning opportunities. The future of education at Cobram Anglican Grammar School is bright, with a strong academic program and facility development plan in place to ensure the best education outcomes. The school has grown immensely in the past few years, but still ensures it maintains the close connection between the teaching staff and the student body and its focus on holistic education.

JUNIOR YEARS: LEARNING AND GROWING Students in the Junior Years are nurtured and encouraged to grow into confident and happy individuals who become responsible members of the school community. Strategies to promote independence, cooperation, resilience, optimism and self-regulation are all part of the broader curriculum. The well-being of every child is of great importance and from their very first day, students are under the care of staff members who are focused on the development of the whole child.
MIDDLE YEARS: MOVING AHEAD Middle Years is a time when students move from having most of their daily decisions made for them, to making most of their own decisions independently. Activities are as varied as cooking, constructing, music, drama, agriculture and robotics to name a few. Cobram Anglican Grammar School helps to ensure that the process of growing independence is a smooth one and is supported by teachers who are passionate about working with students at this important time of their education.

A Matter of Faith By Fiona Blick
What does it take for a person to commit themselves to walking a path of faith, from leaving the seemingly safe world of a ‘nine to five’ job and entering into one of introspection, devotion and self-sacrifice?
Y
arrawonga’s Rev Canon Michael Jones (67) and Emily Crossland (22) are two people who have made that commitment; both had attended church from a young age and both were practicing Christians however the decision to dedicate their futures to their faith came after each experienced a pivotal moment in their day to day lives.

After two decades of working in finance and HR management, with four young children – soon to be five – and a mortgage, Fr Michael walked away from the corporate world and dedicated his life to ministry after returning from a short stint in hospital to find his entire office workforce had been restructured. “Faith had always been a part of my life,” Fr Michael said. “I grew up in a small village in Wiltshire, England and the local church was built in the 12th century. “My family walked to church every Sunday and it really was a fantastic place for a kid – lots of nooks and crannies and hiding spots and interesting things to discover. “My father was one of the bell ringers and I started in the church choir when I was four. “We emigrated to Australia when I was eight years old and set up home in Frankston.”
My focus in ministry has always been to challenge people on where they are at with God. The Sunday School teacher at the Frankston church became a big influence on Fr Michael and nurtured his knowledge, teaching him the difference between personal faith and corporate faith. “To have faith is a personal decision you make,” he said. “You can attend church every week but you won’t have actual faith until you hear God speaking to you. “When my work in the corporate world changed so dramatically I felt it was the sign I needed to finally take up the challenge and begin learning how to become a minister. “Of course, my wife Janice and I prayed and it really took 12 months to make sure I was making the right decision. “Four years of studying was no easy feat, and the most powerful part of training was doing a 15 week internship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, I really thought then that I wouldn’t make it.” But make it he did; he worked part time as a wood cutter to make ends meet for his growing family.
By this stage a fifth child was on its way and Fr Michael recalled how amazed he was by the gestures of generosity from his local community. “The amount of help I have received along the way is truly humbling,” he said. “My focus in ministry has always been to challenge people on where they are at with God. “Faith is not about being an Anglican, it is about being a Christian. “As a minister, from a personal point of view you have to make sure your personal faith is rock solid.
Rev Canon Michael Jones.

“You can be an academic but that level of emotion and devotion in assisting another person or indeed a congregation is extremely intense.” For Emily, who heads the Outreach Team for the Stronger Youth Organisation which is part of the Catholic Church’s Sandhurst Diocese, her ‘moment’ came when she was enjoying a spot of water skiing on Lake Mulwala. Heading out to the middle of the lake, she fell heavily and landed face down, inhaled some water and couldn’t flip herself onto her back.

“I began to panic,” Emily said. “I did attend church but didn’t really have much faith but in that moment, in the water, I asked for God’s help. “I really believe he kept me going and gave me the strength to turn myself over. “That was very much a deciding point for me that I was going to follow my faith.” After Emily was pulled from the water, medical tests revealed she had badly dislocated her knee and would have found it nearly impossible to move. Since that time she has concentrated on learning more about faith and ministry and
has become an integral part of the Outreach Team for the Sandhurst Diocese, helping young people find their faith. “Last year was a truly special year for me

when I travelled to World Youth Day and attend the John Paul II Pilgrimage,” Emily said. “I was fortunate enough to be a part of the opening and closing Mass which was officiated by the Pope. “More than two million young people came together to celebrate the occasion and it was a real privilege to be one of them. “The Pope encouraged us to step outside our comfort zone and embrace what the world has to offer and that is what I intend to do. “We all should exchange the couch for a pair of shoes that will help us walk on paths we have never dreamed of.” Another emergency rocked Emily’s world in January when, out of the blue, she suffered a stroke. “It came from nowhere, there were no warning signs or anything,” she said. “The first couple of weeks were very hard and I was doubting a lot but I am working my way through the issues, I go to physio twice a week and I can still work and be a part of the Outreach Team. “These hurdles have certainly helped me to accept difficulties as they come and I have a much deeper perspective on the struggles of others and trying to help them cope.” Emily was baptised in 2015 and her aim moving forward is to show others there were more people in the community who were “of faith”. “Working with the Outreach Team is wonderful, I go to schools and community groups and give talks to young people and try to show them it is okay to believe and to have faith,” she said. “It was the Year of Mercy last year and mercy is still absolutely needed now. “We live in an age of doubt, when many people seem to thrive on conflict and negativity. “It can get you down and often we simply miss seeing the miracles of faith and kindness that are happening all around us but I encourage everyone to take the time, even just a moment, to look and you will find it.”

A DREAM COME TRUE
For Kaitlyn and Marcus Cummins building their new five bedroom home was a fresh start and a new lifestyle they had dreamt of for some time. “Building our new home was a dream come true,” Kaitlyn said. “Marcus and I used to walk and ride our bikes past this part of town (The Water Edge Estate in east Yarrawonga) almost every day, so when we saw the sign go up about a new subdivision we were quick to jump in and secure our block off the plan. “I started planning the home straight away, every night I would go to sleep picturing different aspects of the home and drawing countless floorplans until we had every detail just as we wanted it. I kept a scrapbook full of colour ideas, tapware, bathroom layouts and kitchen designs. “It was about three and half years before we started building and it was an exciting time.
“Marcus and I really wanted to create a beautiful space for us to raise our family and to suit our busy lifestyle.” The Cummins’ home features a natural look with a combination of stone and timber on a clean white backdrop. Engineered oak floorboards provide durability but sustain the natural look throughout the home. Colour tones are really neutral all the way through the home with features in the kitchen and living areas providing open space and an abundance of natural

light through well placed windows and stacker doors. The stonework fireplace is a standout feature. Outside the swimming pool features a splash pad at one end of the pool perfect for the kids to play on. The pool has a self-cleaning system and the landscaping and lawns have a fully automated sprinkler system. “One of the must have features of the home was that I could walk straight in from the car to the laundry and pantry. “We just love living so close to the water, it’s such a quiet and beautiful part of town walking around Chinaman’s Island and through Silverwoods is so relaxing and we just love waking up with the amazing colours of the sunrise over the lake. We were so excited to get to live in such a wonderful part of the world,” Kaitlyn said.
Building a home to match your lifestyle Kennedy Builders inside story...
“
Kennedy Builders came highly recommended to us as a local family owned building company, whom build custom made homes to suit your needs.
My top tips for someone building for the first time...
They were happy to build the house to our design, as well as assist us in customising our house from start to finish. Whats more, Kennedy Builders show great support in the local area by sponsoring many sporting clubs, which was a big positive for us.
• Make sure you have a clear plan of what you want. Do your research and have a clear vision of what you want your house to look like. Work out as many details beforehand as possible, as this will save time in decision making.
”
• When quoting on a house make sure you compare apples for apples. • Planning and sticking to a budget is key. But I would advise to budget more than you expect. • Ensure you are confident and comfortable enough to communicate with your builder... remember they aren’t mind readers! • Listen to professionals but know when to trust your gut. Don’t obsess you will make mistakes, learn to love to love them.

My top tips for someone building for the first time... • Have a good idea of what you want from the start. I had a scrap book to collect pictures and ideas that I wanted. We also visited display homes in Melbourne to get an idea of the sizes of different homes, so that when we looked at the plans we were aware of what that would feel like in real life. • When building a long-term home I think it’s really important to get the bones right. Work out your budget and your ‘must have’ features, so that you know where you want to focus your attention and money, and what areas you can compromise on. • When you make your first appointment with the builder make sure you have some basic information with you; block size and dimensions, easements, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you want and a budget that you feel comfortable with.

“
We were looking for a builder that could be flexible, that would customise the design to meet our family’s need and work with us to create an amazing home within our budget. It was important to us that we could select our trades, and have lots of input into the materials used during the build.
– Margaret
Kennedy’s allowed us the freedom to work directly with each subcontractor to plan a home that was functional, beautiful and on budget.

The Oasis Homes story of family success In 1993 Libro Mustica, the founder and director of Oasis Homes formed his own company. In the same year ‘Oasis Village’ became a project and from then on business was booming. Oasis Village eventually after many years had expanded and was completely full with over 180 homes. Keen to expand and develop another project Libro purchased a block of land right next to Oasis Village and built "Oasis Caravan Park" from the ground up. Oasis Caravan park was opened in 2000. In 2010, after a lot of controversy the government gave Libro the go ahead to proceed with the $25 million project "Green Palms Village". Libro and his staff always had high expectations for Green Palms but they never expected for stage 1 to be full in just over a year and then preparing for stage 2. It was clear that working seven days a week around the clock had paid off. Oasis Village has not only been a great success from day one but provided luxurious homes and accommodation to people all over the world. It is the most beautiful environment and lifestyle that many would envy. Oasis homes has always believed in supporting local businesses and therefore uses all local tradespeople and when it comes to the interiors uses local carpet, curtain and electrical stores while supporting many local community groups when called upon. Libro has a lot of endorsement behind him and was recently elected to the local shire. Currently working beside him is his son Steven and wife Mackie who manages the Oasis Caravan Park. His daughter Stephanie and son Jason have also worked in the business helping to build it to what it is today. When you purchase a home from Oasis Homes you know you’re in very experienced and reliable hands. Green Palms Stage 2 is almost sold out with only a few blocks remaining. Stage 3 is under way with houses already on site.

From country kid to high-flying Cat By Lachlan Sharp
This time last year, Cobram’s Esava Ratugolea was just your average country kid looking forward to another season of footy. Fast forward 12 months and he is on the list of an AFL club – inches away from making his professional debut.
T
he rise to stardom for Ratugolea was fast, particularly given he picked up an Aussie Rules ball much later than your average Australian kid. “As a kid I always wanted to be a rugby league star. I wanted to get in there and play in the NRL, but making the move to Cobram no one really played it around here, so I had to look for something else,” Ratugolea said. He only decided to give Aussie Rules a go when a few of his school mates asked him to fill in one day for the Yarroweyah Football Club. Before long, the Cobram Tigers came calling and Ratugolea made the move to the Murray League. It wasn’t until mid-year in 2016, when Ratugolea was playing for the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup that he seriously considered himself a draft prospect, as he thought he needed another year in the junior system to work on his game. “At the beginning of the season, I was
struggling a bit with a knee injury, so I started quite slowly,” Ratugolea said. “My aim was to just play every game for the Bushies and maybe look at playing as an over-age 19-year-old next year.
It was all a bit surreal when I first moved down and started training, in the back of my mind I kept thinking that it was all a dream and that I was on some footy camp and that I would be going home the next day
“Then I kicked the eight goals against Bendigo halfway through the year, and then
68
I was put in the Victoria Country side for the National Championships. “When I was put into that side I realised that I was a chance to get drafted. “At the combine, my goal was to really highlight my strengths on the field, which is my athleticism. “I was able to do that by coming second in the standing vertical jump and running a personal best in the 20m sprint.” All that hope and hard work that Ratugolea put in throughout 2016 paid off on AFL Draft night in November, but the night didn’t quite go how he thought it would. “Throughout the draft process, I had people from club come to Cobram and talk to me and my family,” he said. “Right up until the draft night, it looked as though one of the Adelaide teams was going to take me, especially the Adelaide Crows. “Leading up to the draft, the Crows called me and said that if I was going to be available with pick 44, they would take me.
MRL MURRAY RIVER LIVING
Edition 1 - 2017 • FREE
“They had spoken to me about the plans they had for me as a key forward, and I had mentally wrapped my head around moving to Adelaide.” But at pick 43 one club, which Ratugolea said came from nowhere, chose to bring him into the fold. “I wasn’t even paying attention to the live picks, I was just watching the ticker at the bottom of the screen that said pick 44 Adelaide Crows. “Then all of a sudden, Geelong, who had pick 43, read my name out, and everyone I was watching the draft with, my family and friends, exploded. “I think I was too in shock to really react too much – I just wasn’t expecting them to take me.” Since his name was called out on that night, life has changed quickly for Ratugolea, as
Geelong informed him he would be making the move to the city two days later. “They really think of everything when they draft you,” he said. “They had a player for me to live with (Geelong ruckman Zac Smith) for a couple of months until Christmas and then they had a family that I know to live with for the next couple of years. “It was all a bit surreal when I first moved down and started training, in the back of my mind I kept thinking that it was all a dream and that I was on some footy camp and that
69
I would be going home the next day.” The Cats, who have been one of the powerhouse clubs in the AFL for the last decade obviously think highly of Ratugolea, as they handed him the number 17 jumper, made famous by John ‘Sam’ Newman, who played in 300 games for the blue and white hoops. Whatever happens in 2017, whenever Ratugolea makes his debut, he will run out with his teammates knowing he has a town of 5500 in northern Victoria right behind him from the first bounce. ■

Max’s Motor By Alannah Greenwood. A PLACE OF WONDER
M
ax Maclean was one of Corowa’s biggest personalities. He was a true gentleman, a hard worker and a man who loved his family and his town above all else.
Today, four years since his passing, Max’s Motor Museum stands on the corner of Hammersly and Norseman Road as a tribute to his life’s work and a lasting legacy for his home town of Corowa.
Involved in countless community groups and sporting clubs, Max was never too busy to lend a hand. But when all was said and done, Max’s true passion came with four wheels, an engine and shiny exterior.
Max Maclean was heavily involved in anything and everything to do helping out his beloved community. He was a volunteer with the Wahgunyah Football Club, involved in local water skiing and an integral member of the Corowa
74
Rowing Club which made him a life member and named not one but two boats after him. Max was a part of the Corowa Lions Club for many years where he was also presented with life membership – and had a special place in his heart for the Wahgunyah Speedway. Of course Max’s fondness for the speedway wasn’t a surprise, given his long-term love affair with motor vehicles of all vintages, shapes and sizes.

Museum Karissa Watts, Ross Maclean, Helen Romey and Russell Romey couldn’t be more proud to carry on the legacy of their beloved father and grandfather Max Maclean at Max’s Motor Museum.
And still today, after Max passed away at age 81 in 2013, his passion is proudly displayed at Max’s Motor Museum in Corowa. The museum is a place of wonder and a testament to the passion of its namesake, with more than 50 pristine vintage cars and a variety of motor-related collectables on display.
Max’s own collection is a must see, along with cars belonging to local enthusiasts who house their own works of passion at the museum. For Max, an interest in restoring vintage cars came about after losing the love of his life, his wife Nola in 1996. Max decided to get back into

restoring an old 1927 Buick which belonged to Nola’s family. This complete remodel sparked an interest for Max and a renewed appreciation for vintage cars. Although his family thought Max may slow down a little after he semi-retired at the age of 70, he certainly didn’t. Max went on to build ‘his baby’ (the Buick) and another shed which he dedicated to his new passion. He started restoring and buying all the vintage cars and trucks he could get his hands on, especially ones that had belonged to his family. After filling the shed, Max created the showroom to display his collection of cars. But Max wasn’t finished – he had another idea.
“I am going to open up a Motor Museum,” Max declared to his family and on November 20, 2005 Max’s Motor Museum was up and running. His new creation was received well by the community and in turn sparked the formation of the Corowa District Car Club. In the days leading up to his passing, precious time was shared between Max and his children Ross Maclean, daughter Helen Romey and his five grandchildren Karissa, Renae, Russell, Adam and Marcus. It was in these final moments that Max firmly told his children “whatever happens you keep that museum going”. And keep it going they did. “Dad left us with very strict instructions that whatever was to happen that the museum must stay open,” Ross and Helen said. “We are really lucky that we have this piece of dad still here with us and it is a place that we all drop in to at least once a week to tinker around or take car enthusiasts on tours. “He was so proud of this place and all

proceeds, which would be well over $20,000 now, have gone back into the local community and local charities and we still make regular donations to this day.” Laughter continues to echo through the shed as the family often recounts their memories of Max and the creation of his beloved Motor Museum. From family Christmas celebrations in the shed, to a family wedding, this iconic museum which really, in hindsight, is the Maclean family hub, has seen and experienced it all. Maybe that was what Max had in mind when he asked his family to keep it going. Maybe he always knew it was the link that would keep his family together in the place he loved. After all his love for cars, his community and most of all his family was his greatest pride and now Max’s Motor Museum stands as a reminder of that each and every day. *Private tours of Max’s Motor Museum can be arranged directly with the Maclean family by calling (02) 6033 1429 or 0408 538 607.

The Yarrawonga foreshore on the banks of beautiful Lake Mulwala has been selected for Murray River Living’s first Favourite Place. For years the foreshore has been the Yarrawonga Mulwala focal point for recreation and events. Long before Yarrawonga had its own inground pool complex and at a time where there were no luxury, reverse cycle air-conditioners and few backyard pools, the foreshore was the only place to find relief on a hot summer day. People from all around the district flocked to the foreshore for long summer days of fun.

The Lake Mulwala foreshore truly is a Favourite Place in the Murray River region that everyone can enjoy. “We love Yarrawonga. We’ve holidayed as a couple there for eight of our ten years together and after going to so many weddings in Melbourne we knew we wanted something different so Yarrawonga was the perfect choice,” Candice said. The couple wanted to incorporate the beauty of Lake Mulwala into both their ceremony and their reception so they opted for an outdoor wedding at the Yarrawonga Yacht Club. A mild, 25 degree November day provided brilliant sunshine and idyllic conditions for their nuptials, all captured beautifully by Pure mac Photography’s Mickayla Thomas.
“When it came to the photos we didn’t really know what we wanted and we’re not a very ‘lovey dovey’ couple so it was important the photos were relaxed and natural,” Candice said. Mickayla was an unobtrusive observer throughout the day, from bridal preparation, to Candice walking down the aisle in her stunning Mariana Hardwick dress, to bridal party photos at multiple Yarrawonga locations after the ceremony. “We were thrilled with all the photos,” Candice said, “Mickayla captured some really lovely unexpected moments which I just love.”

”Relaxed fun environment that produces images of who you are!” The bridesmaids were beautiful in knee-length, azure blue dresses while the boys opted for a smoky-blue slack teamed with white shirts, brown accessories and a bow tie. Lucas opted for a navy jacket to finish his groom ensemble. With some time to look back on the wedding, and a honeymoon planned for America later this year, Candice said she “wouldn’t change a thing”. “It was great, we loved every minute of it,” Candice said. “All our family and friends had a great time and one of my friends is now saying she wants to have her wedding in Yarrawonga exactly like ours.” ■

February 24, 2018.
Kerry and Mike made the move from the big smoke in Hoppers Crossing, Melbourne, recently where they took over the La Kinga property and the surrounding land. But the move to the bush was not a spur of the moment decision, as they were looking the previous year to make the move by buying a business. “We originally started looking at buying a motel and making that our way into the country life, but we noticed that La Kinga was on the market. “We decided that we should have a look and see if it would be for us. “It really was love at first sight, and now here we are,” Kerry said. Although the industry might appear to be a change for the couple, as Mike was in maintenance and Kerry in real estate, looking after animals is a true passion for them both. The pair said that they treat each pet that comes to stay with them as their own. “We really want the pets and owners to feel that this is their home away from home, and every pet we get will be treated like that. “What we are able to offer at La Kinga is a quiet and peaceful country setting for pets to be able to enjoy. “Every day they are taken for walks and a play in the surrounding paddocks, activities which are included in the daily rate.” For now, La Kinga only offers places for dogs, but they hope to soon be able to cater for cats too. A pick-up and drop-off service is also available within an hour radius of the Boomanoomana property.
