Your genuine local builder supporting our community For 23 years we have been building homes for families in the Goulburn Valley and the surrounding areas, where our team decided to create a project where we could give back to our local community. Being directly affected by cancer amongst the Sessions Builders extended Family, we were motivated to donate to the GV Health Foundation and we are delighted that all proceeds of this home are going directly to Oncology. We feel great about being able to help those who are suffering, we would love to thank all of our supporting businesses and trades people who have given to this project so far.

Welcome Beyond the bricks and mortar of every home, there is a story to tell. If you dig a little deeper below the surface — past the styled vignettes, sleek bathrooms and show-room kitchens — you will find stories of love, loss and new starts. Creating a forever home was the dream for Sue and Damien Preston, and to achieve this they renovated a dated home — located right on the riverfront. After ripping out garish carpets and knocking down walls, the home today is a mixture of contemporary style and welcoming warmth. For Jane and Peter Jones, the burnt-out shell of a circa 1920s home led to a majestic new build. The couple took the blue-print of the original home, just a stone’s throw from billabong waters, and built their grand Regency-styled residence. After 30 years of farming, semi-retired couple Tino and Jenny Crifo wanted to enjoy a more peaceful lifestyle, but with the surrounding space they had become accustomed to. Their ultra-modern new home allows them to enjoy a new chapter in their lives, time with their children and grandchildren, and the space of an acreage property. Nestled among the olive trees is a French provincial-inspired home that Ann and Rodney Henry waited 16 years for. While the patient couple purchased the land back in 1989, they had home and work commitments elsewhere, so they waited until the right time in their lives before building their dream home. Among serene surroundings of natural bushland and manicured gardens, as far as the eye can see, is a retreat for hospice patients. Graham Mitchell has turned his garden into a haven, and he has plans to allow those who need it most to enjoy its beauty — inspired by the loss of loved ones. These beautiful stories in this edition of Our Home highlight that meeting point between home design and lifestyle. Happy reading! Damita Lamont Editor

Ros Batey with Maggy, one of the family’s two dogs.
A dumb waiter is a small lift for carrying items, especially food and crockery, between the floors of a building. Here, the owners use it to carry their wares into the brick-lined cellar downstairs, for atmospheric mealtimes.
THE BURNT-OUT SHELL of a circa 1920s home did not deter *Jane and Peter Jones, who looked beyond it to the billabong water views. The shimmering water, surrounded by lovely old trees, provided the perfect setting for their new home. While the couple demolished and built a brand new luxury abode, having the flame-licked remains of the federation home on the Nagambie property proved a blessing in disguise. By using the blueprint of the original home they were able to build closer to the water than modern regulations allow. Mr and Mrs Jones purchased the property in 2008 and after brief stints with two different architects they decided that Sessions Builders was ideal for the job. Sessions took elements from the previous two architectural plans and combined them as one, to create the couple’s dream home. Today the sprawling residence features a limestone exterior, four marble bathrooms and a marble powder-room, and custom-designed timberparquetry floors in French oak in the extensive open-plan living area. “We did not want to compromise on quality (in the home materials), and Sessions Builders delivered,” Jane said. The decadence is felt throughout the home, which also boasts rare, blue granite benchtops and an old-style dumb waiter from the United States; which delivers food and crockery from the kitchen to the huge downstairs wine cellar using a pulley system. >> 14

<< 13 A mixture of classic styling, Regency furniture and light-filled rooms — thanks to floor-to-ceiling double-glazed windows — the home provides luxurious yet welcoming living. “We tried to create a home that was a country look. We didn’t want to create a piece of (our former home in) Melbourne here,” Jane said. “Most people don’t want rooms as large as this, but that is what brought us back to the country, we love space.” The long tree-lined driveway provides a grand approach to this property, which opens out onto a large entrance area — compete with a pond brimming with fish and, in the warmer months, covered by water lilies. Among the garden features is a wisteria-lined arbour leading onto the stone-fruit orchard, a rose garden, grapevine-covered arbour, Algerian oaks for almost year-round greenery and a herb garden. The couple were also taken by the original home’s huge cellar, which was “very charming, with a dirt floor and completely exposed brick walls”. They kept this 19 sq m cellar space and made it their own, creating a meticulous food and wine storage system and installing the dumb waiter, while using bricks from the original home to line the floor. However, this is where the historical references in the home finish and where the couple’s design dreams were turned into reality. Peter said it was important to select the right building company; one that would bring to life the client’s vision, not the builder’s own, and allow the client to work alongside them. “Most builders can build anything, but not everyone will actually work with you,” he said. “(Jane) gave them some interesting challenges along the way and said ‘come along for the ride’ and so they did. “They were very supportive of having us on site, too.” Making a plan and sticking to it is the best way to ensure a seamless building process.

The extensive 19 sq m cellar space was based on the blueprint for the property’s original 1920s home. In a nod to history, when the Joneses demolished and rebuilt they used some of the old bricks to line the cellar floor.
“It is all in the pre-preparation; so plan, plan, plan,” Jane said. “There were no surprises for us.” Mr and Mrs Jones said they did not alter the home’s design once it was decided on, aside from practical considerations as they arose. “Last-minute changes a) cost a lot of money; and b) get people offside,” Jane said. Not opting for third party suppliers of materials or labour is one of Peter’s best pieces of advice. “People will go with others for cost reasons but we didn’t, for us it is all about quality,” he said. “We wouldn’t go near a builder that didn’t have a draftsman on site, it’s just another relationship to manage. We are very happy with the relationship we had (with Sessions) and still have now. There is trust, they understand you.’’ v *Not their real names

WITH HER HANDS wrapped around a warm cuppa, Sue Preston sinks into her favourite lounge-chair and looks out across a lush green paradise. Through ceiling-high windows she drinks in every part of the tranquil scenery, with the manicured gardens flowing seamlessly onto the pristine parklands and the Goulburn River behind it. This relaxation nook in the main living area is frequented regularly by members of the Preston family, who love the indooroutdoor lifestyle of their Shepparton home. When Sue and husband Damien purchased their riverfront residence about nine years ago it had a “gut it and go” appearance, but the hard work ahead didn’t deter them from renovating it into their dream family home. Today the two-storey abode combines contemporary luxuries with natural textures and hues, evidence of the way the picturesque surrounds and their everyday lives have been melded into one.

Before << 25 Every home has a heart and for the Prestons it is the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area — which offers the most impressive slice of scenery. A sense of grandeur is felt due to the high ceilings, with windows that reach all the way up to meet them, letting in every inch of the leafy surrounds. Large glass doors lead outside to the paved entertaining area — a spot frequently enjoyed by the family and neighbours alike. The real genius in this home is the way it mixes grand design features with an earthy colour palette, to be luxurious and yet inviting. The Prestons were adamant they didn’t want to create another pristine, white “show home”. With their children Bethany and Jacob aged 17 and 11, and the family operating a flourishing landscaping business from home, white décor was never an option. “We wanted lots of texture to bring the outside in. We have natural tones instead, big windows everywhere, slate floors, stone and lots of industrial timber,” Sue said. “We want people to come in and be able to put their feet up on the coffee table and relax. “As much as it is beautiful, it really is a home too.”

Above: Through all the ripping up of the home and yard, and the building rubble piled on top of it, the orange tree miraculously survived. “It actually earned its place, it is the old man in the garden,’’ Sue said. Excess oranges are placed on a picnic table in the nearby parklands so passers-by can help themselves.

<< 27 Every feature of the home symbolises a conscious decision to mix function with beauty. Instead of opting for a butler’s pantry, as so many modernised homes have, the family chose to have a large bench space with red gum detailing, which looks out across the views. When the family finished the renovations in 2011 — including knocking down walls, changing room sizes, removing mint-green paint and brown and gold carpets, and building an entirely new upper level — the occasion was marked in silver. They placed a 50¢ coin from that year in the stone hearth surrounding the feature fireplace. Finishing off the years of hard work with this ambient beauty was fitting for the Prestons, who regard the cosiness of the flickering flames as one of the most charming features of the home. Today the expansive abode features a lower floor plan of two large bedrooms for the children, a guest room, a walk-in linen cupboard and pristine laundry “that are the envy of every female who walks through the house”, a character-filled open-plan area and outdoor entertaining area. The upper level is a parents’ retreat with a second living area leading onto a deck, a master bedroom with elevated views, and a “his and hers” ensuite and walk-in robe. “This is our third home and it really mattered to us, so we had to do it right,” Sue said. “We really took our time and actually lived in the house for about 12 months before we knew what we wanted, and we forecast ahead for a growing family. “We’re done now, we have got it to become our home — that is exactly what it is.’’ v

“It’s about people, not houses” — Matthew Chilcott
It was by chance that Matthew Chilcott entered the real estate industry in 1999. Having represented ACT, Victoria Country, NSW and Northern Territory in football, which included games against Brisbane and Port Adelaide, a chronic back injury forced a change of direction into the property market at the age of 27. “At the time I thought it was the end of the world, as after leaving school at 15 football was all I had done and all I knew anything about. In hindsight, the bad back has been the biggest blessing in disguise” Matthew explains. Having begun his real estate career in the high intensity Jenman system, Matthew then worked for Stewart & White in Wyndham Street, Shepparton, until an opportunity arose to purchase Crosby Real Estate in 2003 which was owned and operated by the late Rowland Crosby. The name was changed to Chilcott Real Estate the same year and has grown into the multi office network it is today. “The 3 offices I have in the Goulburn Valley really complement each other with the Shepparton branch being the largest in regards to staff, sales and property management, the Tatura branch being very productive in a great town with great people and the Nagambie branch sitting in a town that is in the top 10 hot spots for property in Victoria, with many city and holiday buyers pushing the market,” he said. Chilcott Real Estate is a market leader in the Goulburn Valley and Matthew Chilcott is the person to see if you want a straight approach with an emphasis on getting the best result for you and your property. “Its about people, not the houses” he says.

Tino Crifo and grandson Nicholas Beggs enjoying quality time. After more than 30 years working and living on their vegetable farm on the edge of Mooroopna, Tino and Jenny Crifo decided it was time for change. Mr and Mrs Crifo, who have been married for 45 years, are enjoying their semi-retirement in their dream home – which provides a nod to their farming history. They made the decision to build their home on a large block, which provides privacy from the hustle and bustle of a main road in Mooroopna, after struggling to find a large enough established home to suit their needs.
Our HOME
SPRING/SUMMER 2016
“I like the bigger block and I couldn’t get a bigger block with a house on it,” Mr Crifo said. “After living on a farm I couldn’t live on a little town block, I needed room to move, so we built.” Considering the long block they would be building on, Mr Crifo said he wanted a long, acreage-style home. They were able to achieve this, choosing to build Davis Sanders Homes’ Allegra home design, which takes the form of a wrap-around layout. >> 35

Two cosy and beautifully-styled bedrooms were made just for Tino and Jenny’s lucky grandchildren.
<< 33 With four bedrooms, two bathrooms, three living areas and a study, the home is expansive. It is also a magnificent achievement, with generous room sizes and many customisations. “We added the study, built the alfresco into a conservatory, moved the laundry access, made a bigger pantry, changed sliding doors to bi-fold doors in the conservatory and changed it so there is no sink in the bench,” Mrs Crifo said. As you walk into the home’s open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, it is hard not to notice one of the more luxurious customisations the couple made. A corner where two walls meet was cut off and replaced with a flat wall with a built-in gas-log fire and a picture vanity cut-out space with overhead LED lights.

<< 35 When it came to choosing the home’s fittings and furniture, the couple had nothing in mind aside from Mrs Crifo’s preference for floorboards. The idea was vetoed by Mr Crifo and the pair compromised by choosing striking Living Stone Grey tiles from Albury Tile Sellers. These are complemented by the couple’s choice to paint the home’s interior walls in a modern grey tone. The exterior of the home features bricks and cream detailing and a wrought-iron roof. At the back of the home, timber decking and timber steps provide a textural contrast to the rest of the external materials. Mr and Mrs Crifo had to build the house up one metre because of the property’s location on a floodplain. However, the extra height, and the addition of a deck, add to the home’s impressiveness.
Jenny chose to run the same tiles on the floor and up the wall in the large ensuite shower.
While the garden is yet to be complete, it is easy to see how the surrounds will come together to create an alluring property. v

SHAKE UP SPRING WITH
POP COLOURS A psychedelic mix of colours is expected to infiltrate interiors this year, with emerging trends taking their cue from the 1960s and ’70s.

Dulux has predicted on-trend interior colours to include shades of blue and green, decadent browns and charcoals, light pink, hot red and crisp white.
>> 42

» 41
<< 41 These shades are featured in the 2016 Dulux Colour Trends Retro Remix palette, which celebrates a revival of the retro movement with a modern twist. The key colours of spring from Dulux include Deep Sapphire, Rockpool, Hot Lips, Luck, Titi Islands, Clay Play and Vivid White — which create a fun and playful atmosphere. “The 2016 spring palette is a move away from last year’s muted, earthy tones,” Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr said. “Heading into spring, we will feel energised and refreshed with a much brighter palette that incorporates pop colours.
STYLE TIPS FOR SPRING 2016
“The palette allows home owners to achieve an eclectic look and to experiment with an unexpected range of colour combinations in order to make the retro remix theme their own.”
Bree Leech, a creative consultant and stylist for Dulux, offers these quick tips to prepare the home for spring:
Create a fresh and airy look by accessorising a lighter background with brighter pops of colour. Another option is to create a dramatic look with a darker background, highlighted by light and vibrant accessories.
•
Pink has become an interior staple this year. Lean towards mauve, pair it with clashing colour and nonconventional furniture pieces to give it an edge.
•
Energise the space with striking graphic features, such as simple lines and shapes that reflect retro influences from the post-modern era.
Those looking for a more subtle incorporation of these ontrend colours can achieve the retro remix look on a smaller scale by incorporating one or two colours in smaller volumes.
•
White keeps the look fresh and provides a neutral background for any colour combination.
•
Choose furniture in sculptural shapes, such as mismatched bedside tables.
“Don’t feel afraid to use bolder colour this spring. With the dawn of new life, spring offers luscious greens and striking floral hues with an opportunity to bring a fresh essence into your space,” Andrea said.
•
Break hard lines by introducing plant life. Take inspiration from plants that were popular in the 1960s and ’70s that climb and drape or have interesting leaf shapes.
•
Avoid over-embellishment. The layers in this look are created with clean lines, shapes and colour — so there is no need to add too many textures or soften the styling.
“Most importantly, ensure the colour you’ve selected is perfect for your home to create a sanctuary that you will love.’’

SUMMER BRIGHTS
As the weather warms, so too does the colour in home dĂŠcor. Bright pops of pink, purple, blue and green are on-trend right now. Magazines and social media websites are full of vibrant summerstyling inspiration, but what many people do not realise is it is actually quite easy and affordable to get the look in your own home. The idea is not to change the whole colour palette of the home, but to add splashes of bright colour to freshen it up. Most homes have a base colour of all white, or earthy neutrals such as mochas and creams, and summer brights will pop nicely against these. Choose two or three complementary brights, or have several shades of the same bright hue, for the room in question.
Colourful cushions Cushions come in an array of vibrant colours and prints. Revitalise the living room sofa by selecting anywhere from three to seven different cushions in a mixture of sizes and textures. Either choose a few complementary colours (such as purple, turquoise and yellow), or
Our HOME

several shades of the one colour (such as hot pink, peachy pink and blush pink). A patterned throw will round off the look.
Vibrant vignettes Coffee table vignettes are another way of styling with summer brights. Start by placing a brightly coloured breakfast tray on the table; then arrange a couple of brightly-hued photography or fashion books on top of it; add a crystal, copper or gold vase with flowers beside the books; and a figurine or glass candle holder in a bright hue too.
Fabulous features Every home should have some unique feature points that stand out and bring extra character. Hallway tables are excellent for this: place a large artwork on top of it, frame it with funky matching lamps on either side, and make a vignette of three candles in front and off centre. This combination provides the right amount of interest and symmetry to entice the eye.

SPRING/SUMMER 2016
Ann Henry enjoys life in her stylish, olive grove retreat.
HIDDEN AWAY AMONG rows of olive trees is a French provincial-inspired home, surrounded by fresh air and foliage. While the home is modest in size, in terms of the number of rooms, it evokes a sense of grandiosity upon entry. Owner Ann Henry described the style as a mixture of provincial and Victorian, with a few modern trimmings. “Usually at the back of the house, there is a sitting room, a kitchen and the lounge room but now the trend is to have a more open space,” she said. Although most of the styling is French provincial, Ann admits she opted for a few modern elements, especially in her ensuite with a modern vanity and large shower which even includes a sitting bench. The colour scheme features light grey walls and white architraves, skirtings and floorboards throughout, however, the true beauty of the home is the clever interior decorating — which is Ann’s creative domain. >> 55

A beautiful old mirror in the bathroom was given a contemporary feel, with Ann repainting it in black and silver. Like many French provincialstyle homes, the hallway features bedrooms and bathrooms on either side.
A crystal cabinet owned by Ann’s grandmother. << 53 “I love decorating. I’m a believer that you can use different sorts of furniture and can blend old and new items.” While the colours throughout the home are complementary, many pieces of furniture in this home are chosen not as matching items, but for the stories that they tell. “I like to mix and match but a lot of what’s here means something to me.” A crystal cabinet owned by her grandmother makes for a perfect focal point in the kitchen/living area, while a small round table belonging to her husband’s grandparents provides the ideal spot for photographs and a vase. Other treasures which work in well with the style of the home include a beautiful tapestry from a trip to Belgium, which is hung in the main hallway, and painted plates and ornaments made by Ann. Sentimental items help to make a house a home and in Ann’s case these include heirlooms and a collection of old and new family photos, that add character and warmth. >> 56

A sleek, contemporary bathroom provides a stylish juxtaposition to the home’s mostly Frenchprovincial décor.
<< 55 Ann specifically chose a classic style of home so she could tastefully display these items, as in her previous contemporary home they did not complement the style. Ann and her husband Rodney purchased Greendale Grove 16 years ago but, due to working commitments elsewhere, they only moved to the property in November last year — when their new home was completed. “We pulled out rows of the olive trees and built it to the size we wanted,” Ann said. “It’s a beautiful lifestyle out here. And it’s nice to be out of the town.”
The large entertaining area looks out across the rural and olive grove setting.
The 23 ha property bears the fruit which makes olive-based products such as olive oil, table olives and handmade soap, however, it was actually named after a dairy farm. Originally a dairy farmer, Ann and Rodney left Ann’s family farm on Old Dookie Rd in 1985 to start business on the olive grove. Keeping things in the family, Ann and Rodney’s daughter Jacqui runs the Olivehouse Event & Function Venue next door with her partner Rob. The olive trees make the dining experience a particularly pleasant one for visitors to the venue, however, the decking out the back of Ann’s house provides just as nice an experience. “When you’re sitting out there and the sun comes shining through the trees, it’s a real sight,” she said. With most of the garden occupied by olive trees, Ann has recently added her own touch by planting some lavender beside the decking which encircles the perimeter of the home. A yard is currently being built — using old-fashioned woven galvanised wire — for Ann and Rodney’s two dogs. v

DECKING IN GRAHAM MITCHELL’S backyard was built in the shape of a ship’s bow, a fitting symbol when looking out to the expansive gardens that lay beyond. “The block fans out a like a big fan, so I wanted it when you walk out into it, to unfold into nature. There are so many wonderful things about this spot,” Graham said. A manicured lawn with garden beds is just the beginning of Graham’s backyard, which is almost 3 ha and descends down to a wide open space with a pond, gullies and native plants. Far away from busyness of central Shepparton you could hear a pin drop, which adds to the tranquillity of the garden. It is this peacefulness that Graham thinks should be shared with those who really need it, the terminally ill. He has plans to create a spot in his garden for hospice patients to come with their carers and relax. “Sadly I’ve lost a lot of my family, mainly to cancer, so I’ve been privileged to learn how to look after them to the end. I was very handson,” Graham said. >> 62

<< 61 “The hospice here works so hard and does amazing things. So I thought I’ll do it for my local hospice. “For someone to come here with their carer and be the only people here, that’s part of the secret of healing. It’s very peaceful, that’s what people who are sick need. I thought I’ll share it.” In a corner at the top of his garden is a slab of concrete with exposed pipes. This is the former location of Graham’s garden shed and the future location for a bathroom to be built subject to council approval. Crossing the pond is an ageing bridge built by Graham’s children many years ago; it will be accompanied by a new bridge built to accommodate wheelchairs. The bridge leads to the location in Graham’s backyard that he plans to set up for his hospice visitors. It is quiet, secluded and has beautiful green views as far as the eye can see with flecks of yellow wattle peeking through. “I just want them to have a seat in the middle of nothingness, I just want it to be natural, I don’t want to spoil this area,” Graham said. v

POT PLANT POWER Pot plant gardens are a cute and creative idea for backyards, especially those restricted by space.
“They will always struggle and they will never look good. Others love
These on-trend gardens are smaller in size than a typical home garden, making them low-maintenance and ideal for the busy modern world and urban homes.
Sally said.
It is important to note that pot plant gardens require some time and preparation, but with a few clever tips you can easily master this flora art-form. “In the hotter months, the pots will dry out quickly and also potted plants will need to be fed more often than a plant in the (soil) garden,” Sally Mosely from Billabong Garden Complex said. Plant selection is important because some plants such as roses, Australian natives, certain fruit trees and vegetables do not grow well in pots.

having their roots contained, so they thrive and flower well in pots,” Pot-friendly plants included tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, chillies and dwarf varieties of lemons, limes and mandarins, she said. New plants should be re-potted into larger pots with good quality potting mix, and Sally said most potted plants needed to be wellwatered but should have excellent drainage. Final points to consider are climate and location when planting potted gardens. Below are some good options for potted plants, in either sunny or sheltered locations.

GARDENING IN
warmer months
As the days become longer and the weather warms up, bright and vivid gardens will soon begin to bloom. While the warmer months are predominantly a time for gardeners to enjoy, there are a few tasks that must be done in order to keep the garden looking in top condition. Mooroopna and District Gardening Club member Margaret Schwarz offered the following tips for garden maintenance in spring and summer.
Spring Good preparation in the cooler months has created the perfect base for a fragrant and colourful garden. In spring plants wake up from their winter slumber, so it is time to enjoy the garden while being on top of small tasks. This will ensure the summer blooms are as vivid as can be. Division — For plants such as salvias, Margaret said a cutting could be taken from the stem, placed in soil and covered, and a new plant would grow. Annuals — Margaret suggested planting most annuals (plants that complete their life cycle in one year) in spring. Pruning — Cutting back plants after they finish flowering in spring is a good idea, as it will bring a second flush of blooms. Native plants should also be pruned in spring.

Summer As the heat intensifies, garden care should change to maintenance tasks. Summer is the time to keep on top of small jobs, ensuring the garden is ready for blooming season. Mulching — Providing mulch for garden beds is one of the most important things do during summer, as it protects the plants. Mulching keeps the roots cool, and even if the sun burns the top of the plant, it will not kill the plant because the roots have been protected. Watering — Watering daily is unnecessary; every five to seven days is better. It is better to give plants a good drink once a week rather than to give them 20 minutes every day. Tidy — Keeping a neat garden bed allows for better plant growth. Margaret said to regularly keep plants tidy, cut back dead wood and trim back plants such as hedges and salvias. Also keep on top of weeds which can be found growing in open soil in sunny areas. Pests — Healthy plants will withstand the onslaught of any pests. Use an organic spray for killing caterpillars and keep an eye out for aphids on roses. v

GLAMOROUS
garden tea parties While it is more than a century since the English aristocracy frolicked in the garden with their friends, the garden tea party is still a popular pastime. It conjures up images of ladies and gentlemen relaxing on private grounds, surrounded by flowers, with fine teas and abundant cakes on tiered platters. As the weather warms up there is no better time to embrace tradition and hold a garden tea party of your own. The key to a successful party is to have beautiful décor, delicious food and elegant attire. With some clever planning, you can tick all these boxes and create the garden tea party of your dreams. PLACE SETTINGS: Nothing looks classier than fine bone china place settings. Ensure each guest has a bread and butter plate, cup and saucer, and their own knife, dessert fork and teaspoon. Finding enough matching china for a large group can be difficult, so there are two options to go for. Opt for mismatched charm, buying assorted pieces cheaply from op shops and car boot sales; or, purchase several different sets of china and evenly space them out for a look of continuity. TABLE VIGNETTES: Adorn your outdoor setting with a lace or crochet table cloth and for added colour place some coloured fabric underneath it. Down the centre of the table: place small posies of flowers in crystal glasses or mason glasses tied with a ribbon, evenly space the cake tiers or trays of food in between, and for a beautiful yet tasty display — fill glass bowls or jars with brightly coloured lollies. CAKE TIER DELICACIES: For many, the appeal of a garden tea party is as much about the petit fours as it is the social occasion. Classic sweet options include a sliced Victoria sponge, scones with lashings of strawberry jam and cream, and delicate tartlets. Popular savouries include dainty and crustless sandwiches with cucumber, cheese and tomato, and mini quiches. Ensure there is a balance between the two, although a few extra sweets is fine. If preparation time is limited, consider making

half the food yourself the day before, and asking each guest to bring something too. DELICIOUS DRINKS: Go to your local purveyor of fine teas and have a field day. Select a mixture of classics (think Earl Grey and English Breakfast) and some unique blends too (Strawberries and Cream, and Ginger and Rhubarb are crowd pleasers). For a fresh drink, mix elderflower cordial with sparkling water and add a couple of raspberries for colour and flavour. ENTERTAINMENT: Set the scene with the right music. Select some classic instrumental music, or opt for a pop artist that has a mellow and pretty voice. Those wanting to add a classy touch could pay for a musician to play for a couple of hours — a harpist would be ideal. Fun-loving types might enjoy the addition of some games held on manicured lawns — such as croquet, or Name That Tea Bag. ETIQUETTE: Manners are integral to successful garden tea parties, so be sure to bring your best. A good host greets all guests, includes everyone in conversations, and does not interrupt a flowing conversation. She is calm and poised, polite to all, keeps her elbows off the table and always remembers to pour a cup of tea for her neighbour before herself. WET WEATHER: Avoid a last-minute cancellation by having a wet weather plan. Homes that have a gazebo are already sorted, and if not, hire a small white tent for a day. PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD: Before the table setting and the socialising begins, make sure you are groomed ready to go. Have your hair and makeup immaculate and your party outfit on; that way you are ready when the guests arrive. Garden tea parties are the ideal opportunity to bring out your prettiest day dress and jewels, so have fun with it. v

SPARKLING
SPRING CLEAN As spring sets in and the flowers start blooming, people become inspired to freshen up their homes. With the warmer weather and the sun shining there has never been a better time to open up all the windows and start cleaning. There are several approaches to spring cleaning: either do one task a day over a month to slowly work through it, or do all the tasks across one to two days over a weekend. Whichever way you go, below are the key areas to focus on. CHEMICAL CLEANS: When you begin your spring cleaning, first place any chemical cleaners on surfaces to be scrubbed. Leave these while you do other tasks so they have time to soak in and cut through the grime. Use chemical cleaners on the shower, basins, toilets, kitchen benches and the oven. To avoid chemical overload you could place cleaners on half the items, then do another task like dusting, and come back to clean them. Then place cleaners on the other half of the items, do another task like the vacuuming, and come back to clean the remainder. Also, wipe down all mirrors and windows with a window cleaner. DUSTING: Remove all the dust from the home with a microfibre cloth. In addition to dusting all surfaces, dust over and underneath any appliances and static items, dust the perimeters of the roof, and the top of all curtains, blinds, airconditioners and fans. Don’t worry about dust falling onto the floor, because the next task is vacuuming. VACUUMING: Once all dust is removed from surfaces, conduct a thorough vacuum. This isn’t the usual quick, weekly vacuum — this ensures that every part of the floor is cleaned. This includes moving furniture, vacuuming underneath and moving it back; and putting on the smallest nozzle to vacuum along the side of every wall and

every item of furniture. Also vacuum the surface of pillows, cushions, couches and chairs. APPLIANCE CLEANS: Everyday home appliances need a regular clean to keep them hygienic and fresh. For the fridge and freezer, use toothpaste and a toothbrush to scrub away any stains, then make it smell fresh by leaving a lemon cut in half in there overnight. For the kettle, fill it up a quarter of the way with vinegar or lemon juice and leave in for an hour, top the kettle up with water and boil it, then pour out the mixture and rinse out the kettle with cold water several times. For the microwave, place a measuring jug with half water and half vinegar inside and heat for 10 minutes until it steams up, then remove the jug and wipe any grime away with a cloth. WASHING: All regularly used items need to be washed. This includes doonas, blankets, throw rugs and curtains. For items that can’t be removed, like blinds, wipe them down with a cloth. CLUTTER: Spring is the ideal time to get rid of any items in the home that you don’t need. For the wardrobe, take out any clothes that are unworn, do not fit, or haven’t been worn for a year — bag them up and give them to a charity. Go through any documents and papers, sort through them and file — then shred those you don’t need. In the living area, sort through collections of books and ornaments and get rid of any you don’t like or need. Reorganise the cupboards in the kitchen and if there is two of anything throw out if unnecessary. Tidy up the linen and towel cupboards too, removing any old items or turning them into rags. STEAM-MOPPING: Once the house has been cleaned, dusted, washed and decluttered — finish off with a steam mop on all hard flooring (tiles and floorboards). This will leave the place looking tidy and new. v
