T
hese sumptuous hues never fail to get me in the summer mood, with their connotations of glistening days and balmy evenings that seem to last forever. To fill you with inspiration we have created a scorching summer edition with the best local homes, styling, gardens and outdoor areas. Take a trip to the seaside via some effortless Hamptons styling from page 9, where a local interior designer welcomes you warmly into her family abode. Rustic timbers are met with crisp white and nautical blue in this beach-house with a bohemian twist. Resort-style luxury has been achieved through outdoor entertaining areas, kitchens and pools. Take your cue from savvy locals featured in our outdoor special from page 69, who enjoy a permanent holiday feel all year. Behind every great curtain, upholstered chair and cushion is an even greater fabric — and these printed beauties take centre stage this edition. The power of fabrics in uplifting a space is showcased from page 59. Lovers of a more perennial and classic style will adore the two character homes that have been renovated, mixing old with new.
A 1920s Art Deco home from page 35 was saved from its ramshackle state with an award-winning renovation that retained all the vintage charm while adding striking new features, while a much-loved 1950s home from page 23 has been transformed from garish and dated to feminine and light-filled. “I love the rustic timber of the table and with two kids it is very functional too. It’s like an old door, you can mark it and it still looks great,” Gemma said.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017
“If we can’t live by the beach, we will build a beach house.” With this long-held dream Gemma Kirkman left the chilly streets of London eight years ago in pursuit of a warmer and more beach-inspired life in Australia with her then husband-to-be Rick. As he was born and bred in Shepparton the couple settled in the city, married and
started a family — building the house of their dreams along the way. Lovers of the Hamptons aesthetic, the overall design brief was “one house, one vibe”. “It is Hamptons and beach style, but with my own twist,” Gemma said. “I like to really layer it up with textures rather than colour, and I believe every
room should have a feature point like tiles or timber. “I definitely favour white too, my boys always say ‘mum loves white, mum loves white, that’s why we live in the white house’.” It is a hive of activity at the Kirkman family’s abode. »
Custom wooden shelves on the tiled wall were made from 100-year-old wine vats and the striking feature tile in the kitchen extends into the butler’s pantry, but in hues of pale grey, creating continuity in the space. OUR HOME

The couple owns the business Kirkman Plumbing, is raising two boys, Ryder, 6 and Jesse, 4, have another baby due in December — and Gemma has recently started her own interior design business White Boutique Co. Having worked in a London fashion house and attended prestigious events such as London Fashion Week, Gemma has an eye for the aesthetic. “I can foresee a room before it comes together. I normally put a mood board together of all my ideas to see if it is working and I take this with me when sourcing things for a person’s home,” she said. The Kirkmans have lived in their cherished home since November last year, which was built by Chris Barzen from Barzen Builders. From the engineered oak flooring throughout to the “relaxed beachy vibe” to the wonderful memories they have already made — the Kirkmans couldn’t be happier. » OUR HOME

“It was really important that I created a space that was exciting and inspiring for my boys. A place to create, a place to rest, a place to play,” Gemma said. Ryder, 6 has a “woodland meets adventure” styled bedroom that will still suit as he grows older, creating longevity. Jesse, 4, has a twist on the “Hamptons nautical vibe” with a burst of bright orange.

A
t just 24 a Numurkah woman has done what many can only dream of, converting a nearly derelict house into a contemporary abode. Untouched since its heyday, Belinda Booth resurrected the 1950s weatherboard house, crafting a light and airy space which she now calls home and igniting of a passion for property flipping. “It was rented out and no-one had really given it love in a very long time,” Belinda said. “No-one wanted to buy it and it had been on the market for like five years.” Belinda could see beyond the intense patterned wallpapers, original kitchen and asbestos that lay hidden in its walls. Instead she saw good bones and potential, but most importantly an opportunity to get her foot on the property ladder. “People thought I was crazy buying this house,” she said. “Sometimes you can’t start out with the best, it’s okay to start out with the worst and build yourself up.” A yearlong renovation and extension ensued, with half the work done by Belinda and her family and half by Heath Nicholson Builders. » OUR HOME

“I get flowers once a fortnight and I think that really changes up a room; it’s amazing what some fresh flowers can do,” Belinda said.
“I could have changed it and made it super-modern but keeping those original features like the chimney on the outside, it represents that it once was an old house,” she said. “It was a beautiful house before, it was just let go and I am proud because I sort of brought it back to life in a way.” The simple monochromatic design pays respect to the home’s frayed history, while providing much beauty in its own right. Clean lines, timeless matte black fixtures, statement pendants, simple white subway tiles and marble features flow throughout, and even the door hinges and tile grout were considered. Carefully treading the fine line between creating a home to sell and creating a forever home, for now Belinda has added her feminine flair through décor with blush pink accents, greenery and a touch of vintage glamour. “I’m a bit of a girly girl,” she said. “Most of my pieces are just from Kmart and places like that but it’s just what you do with it. “I get flowers once a fortnight and I think that really changes up a room; it’s amazing what some fresh flowers can do.” Proud of all she has achieved, Belinda’s first renovation has uncovered a passion for flipping homes. “I think a lot of people didn’t think I was able to do it because I am young and I don’t have a partner or anything,” she said. “Although there were many times where I thought ‘this is the worst decision of my life’, it honestly was the best thing in a lot of ways, it was so challenging, so rewarding and I just want to keep doing it now because it was so fun turning something old into something new. “My plan was originally to have five in five years and that still is my goal, I’d love to do that so I’ll keep working towards it. “At this stage I’m looking at buying a second one and using the equity from this property to purchase and then eventually this one will be sold.” » OUR HOME

Pondering the idea of downsizing, Maree and John O’Sullivan stumbled across a diamond in the rough — a ramshackle 1920s home bursting with vintage character. “We came in and I just fell in love with it but it was an absolute mess,” Maree said. “It would have been easier and quicker to bowl it over and build something new but we wanted to try and use the façade and keep as many original features as we could.” »

Maree’s grandmother won the drinks trolley at a horse race at Flemington in the 1940s or ‘50s. “I’ve carted it everywhere and it’s looked so out of place in every other house,” she said. “I’ve hung on to it for so long and finally it fits.”
After pleading with her husband, “If you love me, you will buy this house” — a nine-month renovation and extension began. The end result is a charming, light-filled home that effortlessly blends old and new. Maree said it was important to preserve the home’s history with the original door bell, fireplaces, light fittings and windows given a breath of new life. “I just wanted to keep the quirky little features,” she said. “Anything that we took out we tried to reuse in different spots.” Where original details could not be salvaged, John and Maree worked hard to replicate the geometric shapes and opulent finishes of Art Deco design with period cornices, light switches and power points, carpets and silk drapes.
While much of the front of the home stays true to the era, an oversized timber sliding door leads through to the modern open-plan space with an exposed brick feature wall and the master wing. Here, walls have been demolished, allowing natural sunlight to shine in from the north. “My biggest concern was how could we go (from) old to new without it being too dramatic but I think it just blends in well,” Maree said. Mixing antiques and modern luxury, distinctive Art Deco style flows through the contemporary space from a trio of pendant lights in the kitchen to a fantail mirror in the powder room. Outdoor living was important to the couple; the master suite and open space lead out onto a lush backyard oasis. This
provides indoor-outdoor living for yearround enjoyment. For John the move into town is a new lease on life, giving the couple an opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy their new home. “We find we use different rooms at different times of the year, which is great,” he said. “The outdoor living room in the summer time, both the open-plan space and the lounge room in the winter time. I just love them with the fireplaces.” Greg Pearson Builders renovated and extended this home and their efforts led them to win the Master Builders Association’s Best Renovation Over $500 000 in the North-East Victoria section. » OUR HOME

“These little areas of interest just soften a room because most rooms have dining tables or lounge suites which are all square so it creates movement,” Paula said. “Movement is objects of art, painting, greenery and even cushions or
beautiful sheers.” Bold vintage posters and a chunky stained timber bench make a statement in an otherwise minimalistic sunken lounge. A custom made sofa takes centre stage in this practical space while textured cushions tie the relaxed aesthetic together.
Overlooking the pool, generous windows in the master bedroom bring the outdoors in. Modern industrial pendants, a timber fan and zebra print-inspired carpet with a barely-there flick of white completes the light and airy room.

MONOCHROMATIC MINIMALISM I
t is all in the finer details, with neutralhued minimalism proving popular for interiors. Creating a calm haven at home with sleek lines and simple colour palettes such as grey-scale is becoming increasingly important as the pace of modern life continues to race. “There is an ongoing desire to create havens that cater to all our senses which will see the prominence of textures blended with muted hues next year,” Dulux colour expert Andrea LucenaOrr said. “(In 2017) the emphasis on connection, tactility and balance prevails.” Through a soothing mix of grey hues a home can be turned into a rejuvenating sanctuary — allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It also provides the perfectly balanced backdrop when you do want to add some elements of colour, making them pop against it.

ADVERTORIAL
“The reason I wanted Lindi in the business is because I know she is great operator and a really well-respected person and she’s very loyal, which is something that we’re both big on,” Peter said.
H
appily working behind the scenes is Lindi Cardamone, wife to Peter Cardamone and mother to Gabby, 15, and Steph, 13. “Lindi pretty much runs our business,” Peter said. “I’ve got the easy job, I go out and I’m the face of the business, but the brains of the business is Lindi.” When she is not handling rental property maintenance or helping the sales department, Lindi works in the office leading the business’ exceptional customer service. But her hard work does not stop when the doors close for the day.
After hours, Lindi can often be found working from home, not only paying the bills for the business and doing the wages but also running the busy family home. Peter first made the switch to real estate in 2012 and Lindi has been by his side every step of the way. “Pete had come from a completely different industry and he really did the hard yards for the first six months. He was driving an old, banged up ute without airconditioning in the middle of summer and knocking on doors,” Lindi said. “He was trying to help run the office too, and finding his feet in a new industry and that was tough.” A year later Peter went out on his own, launching Cardamone Real Estate, and Lindi joined the family business. Peter said having Lindi on board took a lot of pressure off him. “It actually released me to get out of the office more and go and have a coffee with a potential vendor and all of a sudden our referral business just grew from there,” he said. “When I’m out of the business, I’m still in the business. When I’m out with clients, I know my wife has my back and my assistant Brendan Webb is also my fatherin-law, so it’s very personal. “The reason I wanted Lindi in the business is because I know she is great operator and a really well-respected person and she’s very loyal, which is something that we’re both big on.” Lindi’s loyalty runs deep having worked closely alongside John and Agata Anderson at John Anderson Pharmacy for 18 years. After making the difficult decision to leave Anderson’s to concentrate on their
own business, it has grown in leaps and bounds. “When we first started there were three staff plus us and now we have nine including us, plus a couple of part-timers,” Lindi said. “Without our staff support we wouldn’t be able to do what we’re doing.” The Cardamone family’s passion for sport shines through everything. “Lindi has played almost 450 games of A-grade hockey for the Mooroopna Hockey Club including 12 premierships and that says a lot about her,” Peter said. “She’s just a really dedicated person who has got the best out of herself with sport and she does the same thing in our business. “She leads by example and you either have that in you or you don’t and that’s a credit to her mum and dad and her grandparents.” These strong family values are apparent in the way they run Cardamone Real Estate. “You get knocks on the doors for sponsorship all the time and we try to support as many local sporting clubs as we can and community events to a degree,” Lindi said. “Pete has organised this Station 1 night and we will probably raise in excess of $25 000 to go to the GV Base Hospital kids’ ward.” Peter was quick to praise Shepparton and its community. “Shepparton has been great for us, not only in business but in life. It’s been a fantastic town,” he said. “We don’t forget where we’ve come from so we put back into the community.” OUR HOME

RESORTSTYLE LUXURY
C
hanneling the luxury of a holiday resort was key to the Barzens’ beautiful outdoor entertaining area. Chris and Michelle Barzen wanted their Kialla home to feel like a resort that could be enjoyed in all seasons. Having built their outdoor area with the aim of keeping their stunning pool in view, every aspect of this space focuses on the crisp blue water. Chris, who owns Barzen Builders, custom-built the space using natural timbers such as spotted gum and a native Australian hard wood. These were used as accents throughout the space and to create an eye-catching feature on the ceiling of their alfresco area. For the remainder of the outdoor area, Chris and Michelle favoured hardy materials such as bluestone pavers and polished concrete floors that would stand the test of time, both stylistically and against the weather. After spending 12 months working on the space, style and functionality were achieved — which was essential for the couple and their three children. “It was important that it was a space we could enjoy 12 months of the year, which is why we’ve used the heaters, TV and blinds,” Chris said. “We’re often using the outdoor kitchen and entertaining area. “We just wanted to keep the space really open.” As the weather warms up the Barzens can now transition from enjoying the football curled up with a blanket on their outdoor furniture, to firing up the barbecue and pizza oven for a relaxing evening by the pool. POOLSIDE T
ransforming a backyard into a summer resort is as simple as installing a pool. Outdoor areas are as individual as people themselves, so having a custommade concrete pool is an ideal option. “Being able to tailor-make a pool to suit people’s backyards are one of the beauties of concrete pools,” Aquazone Pools owner Joe Surace said.
O
“They’re very unique in terms of the flexibility in design, the appearance, the way we can incorporate a spa and children’s wading areas, and alter depths.” A key consideration when designing a custom-made pool is the location and how it will work with the surrounding landscaping and style. With multiple tiling options, pool styles and colours to choose from

for a custom-made pool, a person’s individuality could really shine through, Joe said. Another top tip is to install a cleaning and filtration system that is efficient and automated, to take the fuss away from pool maintenance. “The less time you spend maintaining the pool, the more time you can enjoy the pool,” Joe said.
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
n-trend colours and designs aside, the key to loving an outdoor setting is in the materials chosen. Materials with longevity will ensure outdoor furniture looks presentable year in and year out. Long popular for outdoor chairs and couches is a wicker look, with one of the more durable versions on the market being made from a PVC or resin material, which is UV-treated and has an aluminium frame. “Wicker has been around for a long time but the resin, wicker look on offer reflects a change in the market for a more durable material that still has that woven look,” Harvey Norman Shepparton proprietor Neil Kuhl said. 72

SPRING/SUMMER 2017
“This is an excellent option as you don’t have to worry about rusting.” Another great option in a wicker look featured polyboard, which was scuff-resistant and had an aluminium frame to prevent rust, Neil said. He said for outdoor kitchens, a stone top was not only ontrend but was also durable, meaning it wouldn’t need to be replaced after a short period of use. An often overlooked yet simple tip for longevity in outdoor kitchens is purchasing a cover to go over them, preventing dust and unnecessary mess from passing birds, ensuring the kitchen is ready to be used at a moment’s notice.

hroughout the hot summer months, Emma Dowling and her family can be found relaxing by the pool with their feet dipped in the clear water. After taking the plunge and installing a pool in the backyard of her Shepparton home in August last year, Emma said it had become a focal point of the home.
Emma said the prefabricated fiberglass pool, which she chose from the northeastern Victoria branch of Narellan Pools, was installed in just a couple of days — meaning it could be enjoyed as soon as possible. When planning the location of an outdoor pool there are a few key points to consider. “I would suggest to not try and restrict
the pool yard and incorporate some softscaping such as plants and bushes within the fencing as well,” Robyn Baker, co-owner of the Narellan Pools north-eastern Victoria branch, said. “Having the pool not too far from the house will help to keep it out in the open, where you can keep an eye on the kids and tie the pool together with an alfresco area.”
CLEVER CURATION for outdoor kitchens
W
hen the weather heats up take the cooking outside into an idyllic outdoor kitchen. Curating your dream space to cook in is as easy as considering these few top tips. “First is to consider the position the outdoor unit is going to be in. Is it exposed fully to the weather or positioned outside the roofline of the home? This will really determine the materials that need to be used,” KitchenWise director Mark Boldiston said. Today’s trend is for the outdoor kitchen to reflect the indoor kitchen in terms of the style, but not in terms of materials — as these need to be more durable for the variety of weather
conditions they are exposed to. “If your benchtops are open to the weather and there’s a barbecue involved you can use products like natural granite or stainless steel on your benchtop,” Mark said. “They are durable to the weather and withstand the heat most barbecues produce, as well as the sun exposure and they’re easy to keep clean.” To create a bespoke space, Mark suggested having a custom-built outdoor kitchen. This will ensure that the outdoor kitchen blends seamlessly with the outdoor space and fits with the overall aesthetic of the home. OUR HOME

SANTA’S
SURPRISE I
t was a wonderful Christmas morning when Oscar and Chloe Sleeth walked into the backyard of their Kialla home to find a brand new cubby house. Since that magical moment two years ago, the cubby has been enjoyed in sunshine and rain by the siblings, aged 7 and 4. While Oscar can often be found flying down the cubby’s blue slide, Chloe can be found inside holding meticulously planned tea parties. The cubby has been painted and decorated with style, and has whimsical red roses winding around the verandah. With a letterbox and even its own garden, in the form of planter boxes flourishing with the latest spring flowers, this tiny hideaway ticks all the boxes for little ones.

evin Tate created something truly memorable for his precious granddaughter. The Mooroopna resident hand-made a beautiful cubby house for now five-yearold Remy Smith as a Christmas present in 2014. Since then her sister Marley, 18 months, has come along — and the vivacious youngster also enjoys the cubby house, which is positioned in the backyard of their Echuca home. With adjustable steel legs, an insulated roof and all the trimmings, the mini version of the children’s actual house took the doting grandfather about one month to make. “I added the crooked doors and windows just for something different,” Kevin said. “The girls love it and they spend hours in there; the other kids in the neighbourhood love it too.” Complete with a kitchen and servery window, the girls pass their time making imaginary cups of tea, coffee and sandwiches for their parents and guests. BELL BOYS’
ABODE
W
ith a spacious deck, large sandpit and twisting yellow slide, the Bell boys’ stylish cubby puts the fun into any day. Having started its life as a simple cubby house, devoted parents Stacey and Stuart Bell joined forces to create a children’s paradise in stylish grey hues. The three Bell boys — Jaxon, 4, Hunter, 2 ½, and Lincoln, 8 months, — let their imaginations run wild in the modern cubby kitchen. Stacey has enjoyed adding her own personal touch to the boys’ special hideaway. “We had to build a box to attach the slide to the deck, so I livened it up a bit by creating a mosaic of a cactus,” she said. “The boys have an old coffee machine and blender inside as well, which they love to use and we redid a Kmart kitchen inside the cubby to match in with the colour scheme.” 82

ith a slide, tyre ladder and sandpit, the cubby house that Adam Ashley and Amalie Durbridge have created for their two young children is the stuff of dreams. The couple purchased a simple cubby house as a first birthday present for now 18-month-old Piper, then got creative to make it their own. Today the grey and white cubby sits on stilts and also boasts new steps and a deck. Positioned pride of place in the backyard of the couple’s Euroa home, Piper and her brother Ollie, 3, pass the days by digging, climbing or running around the cubby. As summer approaches, Adam said they were looking forward to one particular feature of the cubby. “The slide is actually a waterslide, so there are three holes at the top that will trickle water out so we can’t wait for summer to try that out,” he said. With the inside of the cubby featuring tables and chairs, a fridge and a sink, Amalie says the siblings often spend many hours making pretend food — with pizza a favourite — as they enjoy just being kids.

renda Purden’s green thumb began to develop during childhood, which she spent gardening alongside her mother. The Kialla resident’s passion for gardening has continued throughout her life and has been finely honed during the past few decades, resulting in a green oasis that brings together everything from ferns to succulents to flowers. “It is a labour of love. But if you don’t want to do it, you don’t and then you just catch up in a few months’ time,” she said. “That’s my garden. It’s never immaculate. There’s always something to do.” In Brenda’s garden there is a large mixture of plants, including bromeliads — which are the “flavour of the moment” — traditional roses and mandevillas. Every nook and cranny of the garden reveals a new surprise; with wheelbarrows repurposed to become flower beds for succulents, tall trees providing shade from the harsh sun, and a fernery with hanging pots providing a green canopy. More than half the garden is sourced from cuttings from Brenda’s friends, resulting in a very personal garden with plants named after the friends who gifted them to her. » OUR HOME

W
hen Yvette Williams and Mark Bailey built their first home in Tatura eight years ago they set out to create a sustainable backyard haven. “I wanted to grow food for us and I also wanted food and habitat for little native critters which are mainly birds but also skinks and insects,” Yvette said. She quickly got to work, transforming a blank canvas into a kitchen garden with herbs, 20 flourishing fruit trees, raised vegetable beds and three curious chickens. The thriving garden may appear free-spirited but incorporates passive design principals with cherry trees and grape vines shading the home in the warmer months. “We tried to incorporate a few deciduous things, considering they are good for shading summer sun and keeping the house cool,” Yvette said. “I thought if I’m going to do it, I would rather have something that’s edible.” From citrus, apples and pears to pomegranates, plums and apricots, fruit is eaten straight off the tree by the couple and their sons Callum, 8, and Rhys, 6. “You definitely notice the fruit tastes better because it’s picked when it’s ripe,” she said. “My aim was to have different variations to provide pollination and if I’m going to have two different varieties (of the same fruit), get them to extend the season, so you can have an early variety and a late variety.” 94

For yearlong harvest,Yvette plants both a summer and a winter crop with a garden bed devoted to strawberries or garlic depending on the season. “It definitely doesn’t meet our entire needs for vegetables,” she said. “I try to grow ones that we like but also ones that don’t fare well sitting on the supermarket shelf like your leafy greens.” For Yvette the garden is a labour of love but also a place for her sons to learn and grow. “I like doing it but it’s also good for the kids to see that veggies don’t just come from the supermarket and they look a bit different when you grow them at home,” she said. “When they were younger they would love shoveling out the compost, just anything in a wheelbarrow and a spade, they’ve had fun playing in the mud.
“Now when they see a lovely big crop they love picking it and eating it.” Callum and Rhys also enjoy venturing out to discover freshly laid eggs. “My plan was the chickens would be my little workers, they can give me some eggs but they also have to earn their keep,” Yvette said. “They can be in there scratching around eating all the bugs and the pests.” As long as Yvette has been gardening, she has also been composting and she said the chooks played an important role in creating good compost. “We don’t just throw the scraps in the bin, we compost them and they go back in and create more food,” she said. “Every six months when I change over the seasons I empty the compost bins into the veggie beds and dig it in.” OUR HOME

Don’t pound it into submission with a baseball bat; that makes it taste like ditch water. A light press is all that’s required. Squeeze the lime. If you batter an innocent lime to death, you’ll get bitter ditch water. It’s juice you want. Use simple (sugar) syrup unless you want to spend time dissolving the white sugar in the lime juice. Use a flavoursome white rum: Havana Club, Caña Brava, Flor de Caña, Santa Teresa Claro. If you want to use an aged rum, then think about how it will affect the balance, and adjust. INGREDIENTS
• 1 tsp 2:1 simple syrup • juice of 1 lime • 2 sprigs of mint (Note: It’s not easy to get your hands on hierba buena, but if using spearmint don’t muddle the stems.) • 60 ml (2fl oz) soda water • 30 ml (1fl oz) white rum • ice cubes • Angostura Bitters, optional
