Our HOME
AUTUMN 2016
Welcome As a child my parents would take me on home sticky-beaking expeditions masquerading as “family walks”. The pace was anything but consistent, as we made many stops throughout the neighbourhood to peer over fences and into homes through non-curtain-shielded windows. I didn’t understand the intrigue until I was much older and developed some similar pastimes of my own. Devouring home magazines and blogs like I did dinner, I was fascinated by the insight into different lifestyles. What makes looking at other people’s homes so interesting is the fact that, aside from their beauty and function, they are worlds in which people live their lives. They are places where family meals are enjoyed, hopes and dreams are shared, comfort is given, relaxation is achieved, and milestones are celebrated.
28
For young couple Tim and Stephanie Swift, their home symbolises the beginning of a new chapter — with their newly renovated Euroa cottage being their first home. The savvy pair took a dilapidated Californian bungalow, which was more than 100 years old, and renovated it into a charming abode. Dennis and Jennie Young are well versed on the topic of home design, with their new Hamptons-style home in north Shepparton being the fourth they have built. The beach luxe design with contemporary fittings is the ideal residence for them and their son. Gardens are also spaces where the story of life is played out. For Pauline Truman, her quaint cottage garden in Kialla Lakes is where she relaxes, exercises and finds enjoyment. With more than 100 salvia plants and not a shred of grass in sight, there is plenty to keep her occupied. From the outdoor kitchen where meals are enjoyed in the fresh air, to the roll-top bath where worries are soaked away, to the fairy garden where youthful dreams are inspired — I encourage you to take a peek into the lives and homes of others through this issue of Our Home. Bamboo flooring and neutral colours are featured throughout most of the home. The main drawcard of the open-plan living area is a feature wall made of timber planks.
HAVING BUILT THREE HOMES together in the past, Dennis and Jennie Young knew they wanted a luxe coastal theme for their fourth. The couple went for a Hamptons-style abode, mixing a traditional and sophisticated beach-like design with sleek, contemporary fittings. Their new family home — tucked away in a corner of Grammar Park Estate in Shepparton’s north — has a northern facing block for indooroutdoor living. The home’s exterior facade is half weatherboard and half stone, an idea Dennis and Jennie got from looking online and one that fitted well with their classic styling. “We had seen stack stone before but that’s quite different to the stone we have used,” Jennie said. “We wanted something different.” The house is split into halves by the entrance, so that from the front exterior you can only see through to a portion of the home’s backyard. One half of the house — which was designed with privacy in mind — has been utilised as a separate wing for the couple’s 15-yearold son Hayden, while the other half is the family’s main living space. Dennis and Jennie wanted to have an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, which led them to create their northern wall out of windows — with folding glass doors opening onto an outdoor kitchen. They also included luxuries such as a large bedroom and ensuite, and a free-standing bath in their main bathroom.

<< 11 The traditional Hamptons styling is seen in the neutral tones and bamboo flooring, which they contrasted with modern luxuries. They chose sleek fixtures to complement their contemporary kitchen, including two 600 mm ovens, a double dishwasher, a butler’s pantry and a Ceasarstone benchtop. The main drawcard of the open-plan living area is a feature wall made of timber planks, diagonally positioned about 10 cm away from each other. The feature wall was placed in front of the entrance to the master bedroom, so guests could not see from the lounge room into the bedroom. “It still gives you that open-ness without closing everything off,” Jennie said. Upcoming plans to build a pool in their backyard will complement the couple’s Hamptons-influenced home and add yet another slice of luxury to the family’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. >> 14

The old stove has been replaced with a stainless steel version in the modern new kitchen.
A DILAPIDATED, CENTURY-OLD weatherboard house has been transformed into a quaint home filled with modern comforts. When searching for their first home in Euroa the sight of a crumbling, ramshackle building didn’t deter Tim and Stephanie Swift. Instead of being daunted by the major renovation project, the couple embraced the challenge of breathing new life into the Californian bungalow. Rotten, sloping floorboards, a leaking roof, broken weatherboards, decaying plaster and an overgrown garden were just some of the hurdles they overcame to create their home. Modern comforts have been incorporated while the charm of yesteryear has been retained. Stephanie said they did the bulk of the work themselves, with the assistance of family, and reined in spending by sourcing and recycling second-hand materials.

Above: Soaring 3.2m ceilings are complemented by ornate plaster ceiling roses, retained in two rooms. Left: A free-standing roll-top bath is a stand out feature in the bathroom. << 23 Ornate ceiling roses in the front two bedrooms were salvaged when the entire house was replastered, and the removal of four layers of carpet in the living area revealed lustrous timber floorboards. Four timber windows, purchased for $100 at a clearing sale, replaced aluminium versions from a previous extension of the property and the original panelled doors and door handles have been re-used. Several walls have been knocked out and reconfigured to create an open-plan living area and 14cm moulded skirting boards, typical of the era in which the home was built, tie the old and new together. On trend faux-marble benchtops, white cupboard doors and sleek stainless steel appliances have transported the kitchen into the next century, while open shelving adds a country-style look.

Damaged weatherboards were removed during the renovation.
A new deck, crafted from silvertop ash timber, replaced a cracked concrete area.
<< 25 Stephanie said she originally wanted pressed tin splashbacks but came home from work to find Tim had ripped up boards from the front porch, polished, sealed and fitted them to the kitchen wall. “They look great; the timber breaks up the white and adds to the rustic cottage feel,” Stephanie said. The original small bathroom was trebled in size by relocating a wall and utilising what Stephanie said was “wasted floor space”. The bathroom now houses a free-standing, roll-top bath as a standout feature. In the main bedroom a charming window seat and open fireplace add a sense of opulence. The transformation continued outside too. A new deck, crafted from silvertop ash timber, replaced a cracked concrete area. The undercover alfresco area was made from 175mm x 175mm rough-sawn ironbark posts, and the pitched ceiling was lined with painted timber boards.
combustion stove, which was removed from the kitchen, will eventually be used as a heat source in the outdoor area. Even the newly-constructed shed is sympathetic to the era of the home, clad in weatherboards with timber windows and timber barnstyle doors. Stephanie, who works in her family’s furniture business in Euroa, and Tim, a plasterer, have owned the house for about four years. Their renovation project continues to be a work in progress. “We were pretty excited when we first bought the house, but it wasn’t until we actually started work that we realised it would be such a longwinded project,” Stephanie said. “Now that the bulk of the hard work has been done we can start to play around with interior design and style. “We’re still finding our style, we love timber and pops of colour.”
Double, cedar-framed glass doors open onto the rear deck and a timber bench under the kitchen window acts as a servery.
Stephanie said the hard work would not deter them from renovating again, and working together had allowed them to develop complementary sets of skills.
In keeping with the couple’s commitment to recycling, the old
“Tim builds me the rooms and then I have fun styling.” v

RENOVATIONS
with heart and soul STORY TAYLAH BURROWS PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY CURTIS
ROOM BY ROOM, Cheryl Serafini has made her way through a list of renovations that she and her late husband Steve had planned. Steve Serafini died suddenly in 2015 before the couple could complete the renovations together, so Cheryl decided to honour the dreams they had shared. In early January this year Cheryl enlisted the help of Vanderwey Building and started the renovation process in her Shepparton East home, beginning with the home’s main bathroom. She chose to knock down three walls to create one large bathroom with a shower, bath, toilet and vanity. Next she remodelled the laundry, kitchen and verandah. Each room has its own individual style without being too different from each other, nor too modern. The decor in the laundry is country style, with an earthy-hued benchtop and white inset cupboard doors. The open-plan kitchen, dining and living area boasts autumnal tones, thanks to the cedar feature walls. In the bathroom, Cheryl left her styling choices open by choosing a light taupe tile from floor to ceiling. “I really just wanted to keep it neutral for the style of the house,” she said.

neutral colours so it didn’t matter what colour I use (for styling).” In the kitchen she opted for crisp white finishes, including plenty of white cabinets for storage, a granite sink and a Caesarstone bench top. The all-white colouring in the kitchen is broken up by a silver splashback, and this is complemented by silver flecks in the benchtop. An appliance cupboard was also added into one of the corners of the kitchen to help keep the bench tidy. Despite the modern fittings, Cheryl retained some of the kitchen’s original charm by keeping the wooden floorboards, and the cedar and brick feature walls. Outside, the verandah was extended to provide plenty of room for entertaining. A bench seat was built into a timber feature wall and is now where Cheryl enjoys her morning coffee. Beautiful outdoor furniture, including a nine-piece stone-table dining set, adorns the new entertaining space. With the renovations now complete, Cheryl has created something much more special than home improvements. She has created a space to make new memories with her children Jessica and Daniel, and to honour Steve and his dreams for his family. v

and renovate A 2016 Mortgage Choice survey found that 36.2 per cent of homeowners were planning to renovate in the near future. This figure does not surprise the organisation’s chief executive officer John Flavell. “Not only can renovating a home significantly improve its value, but it also allows homeowners to stay at their current address,” John said. While renovating can add significant value to properties there are some important tips to keep in mind.
Set a budget While it can be difficult to stick to a budget during the renovation process, it is still important to set one. If you are hiring a professional to complete the renovations, make sure you source several quotes from different providers as this will give you a clear idea of how much you could be up for. If you are completing the renovations yourself, make sure you do your research and know exactly what is involved before getting started. It is also important to consider if you will be able to live in your home for the duration of the project or need to find alternative accommodation.
EXPERIENCE A HIGHER LEVEL OF BUILDING
Unexpected costs Even if you are hiring a professional who gives a fixed price for their services, it is inevitable that costs you don’t plan for will arise. It might be that your paint choice turns out to be a mistake or some of the building materials are damaged because they are left outside. Whatever happens, it is important to plan for unexpected costs by factoring a financial buffer into your budget.
Organise finance Once you have sorted out your budget, you will need to work out how to finance your renovations. Options include using the cash in an offset account, redrawing funds from your home loan or refinancing. Your financier can advise you.
Ask for help No-one likes to take advantage of their friends and family, but it is always a good idea to ask for help where possible. Whether you know someone who can source a product discount, or someone who can help with demolition, asking for help from friends and family can reduce the time and money you invest in the renovations. v

EARTHY HUES FOR A NATURAL LOOK Taking inspiration from nature, the Laminex 2016 colour palette features warm wood grains, veined stone and restful grey tones. Laminex marketing manager Joanna Baker said the additions to the range were designed to create unique spaces that were fine-tuned to how people live, work and play. “The way people use their spaces is changing. More than ever, people are demanding a higher level of functionality without wanting to compromise on striking good looks,” Joanna said. Nineteen new decors have been added to the colour palette, plus one exclusive to Laminex DiamondGloss surfaces. The result is earthy hues that inject style, creativity and desirability into everyday residential and commercial spaces. To accommodate Australian homeowners’ love of a stone-look benchtop — with the affordability of laminate — Joanna said the company had continued to develop new products. Recent advances in Laminex’s core laminate and Impressions Spark and Nuance finish ranges mean fabricators can now achieve a tighter-edge angle, replicating the look of a stone slab at a fraction of the price. v

SERENE PINK AND BLUE
comforts with a calming effect, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times,” Leatrice said. “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.” Pantone, the global authority on colour, maintains that the colour pairing reflects current challenges to traditional colour associations. “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design,” Leatrice said.
The pairing of pink and blue together is aimed at creating a serene and harmonious environment. For the first time, two complementary shades have been chosen for the 2016 Pantone Color of the Year — Serenity (pale blue) and Rose Quartz (pale pink). “With the whole greater than its individual parts … Serenity and Rose Quartz demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said. The pairing evokes a mindset of tranquility and inner peace, which is highly sought after in the modern world due to the stress of busy lives, Leatrice said. Welcoming colours that encourage feelings of security and reassurance have been growing in popularity. “Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity
“This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers’ increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression which includes a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged, and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to colour usage.” Leatrice suggested using the harmonious pairing in rugs and upholstery, paint, or decorative pieces for the home. Aim for a mixture of solid colours and patterns, along with different textures, to create the best effect, she said. The pink and blue duo can also be used in the kitchen and dining rooms, through home accessories such as candles, decorative bowls and vases. These colours worked in translucent, glazed, matte or metallic finishes here, Leatrice said. “Whether on their own or combined with other shades, the pairing of Serenity and Rose Quartz bring a feeling of calm and relaxation into the home environment,” she said. “Like a serene sunset, Rose Quartz encourages reflection on one’s surroundings while Serenity, a transcendent blue, provides a naturally connected sense of space.” v

FROM THE RUNWAY TO THE HOME Fashion trends have a trickle-effect; starting on the runway, making their way into department store clothing, then finally into the décor with which we decorate our homes.
Two popular colours from the spring palette are Peach Echo and Rose Quartz, with these orange and pink hues a favourite among design and fashion experts.
This cyclical effect is seen every year and it all begins with the release of the biannual Pantone Fashion Colour Report Spring 2016.
“Coming to the fore this spring, Peach Echo (is) a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility,” Leatrice said.
The report was launched in tandem with New York Fashion Week, held from September 10–17 last year, and featured the colours Rose Quartz, Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, Buttercup, Limpet Shell, Lilac Grey, Fiesta, Iced Coffee and Green Flash.
Another popular hue is Serenity, a pale blue, and Snorkel, a navy blue.
Atmosphere is key to all fashion colour trends, and the spring palette is all about happiness and relaxation. “The colour palettes of this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said. “Yet with our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for balance by incorporating those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation.”
“Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times,” she said. “A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space. “Playing in the navy family, but with a happier, more energetic context, the maritime-inspired Snorkel Blue implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape.” A boost of energy comes from hues such as Buttercup yellow, while Limpet Shell aqua and Green Flash provide a freshness. Shades of Lilac Grey and Iced Coffee brought together the variety of colours, Leatrice said. v

GLAMOROUS JEWEL TONES Cold winter days encourage us to spend more time indoors, so it’s important to make your home as inviting as possible. Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr said there had been a shift towards using darker colours in the home, with intense blues, moody purples and warm mauves tipped to be popular. Andrea said the intense and moody colours of winter would add sophistication to interiors and a touch of retro glamour when combined with warm metallic highlights. “Add luxurious, textured materials along with rich faux furs and beautiful knits to add to the winter look and create a space that is cocoon-like, perfect for feeling warm and protected during those colder months,” she said. “To incorporate the winter look on a smaller scale, try painting canvases in the winter colours to hang against neutral backdrops and accessorise with metallics and darker, dramatic colours with smaller highlights in bright accents.”

•
Don’t be afraid to use dark colours in the home; darker colours can create an ambience that can’t be achieved with lighter hues.
•
Add vibrant accessories against the darker backdrop to add brightness.
•
A bedroom is also a great space for darker colours as it is a room predominantly used at night. The addition of beautiful lighting and light bed linen may help to balance the space.
•
Deep colours are ideal in living rooms with a home cinema, as darker backdrops make the viewing experience more dramatic and colours may appear to look stronger on screen.

WHITE HOT TILES While a kaleidoscope of tile colours are available in Australia, home renovators are still opting for basic white. White provides a safe canvas and is one that people revert to when the choice of colour is overwhelming, Beaumont Tiles communications and design specialist Christie Wood said. The white-on-white palette could have a powerful effect on the mind, clearing visual and mental clutter and offering versatility, Christie said. “White can evoke a myriad of emotions and seasonal effects; warm and embracing, crisp and clean, exciting and dramatic, peaceful and Zen-like, or simple, elegant and classic,” she said. To avoid a stark, sterile and unimaginative environment — which an allwhite approach can sometimes exude — Christie suggests using texture, colour and pattern to create depth and interest. “You still achieve a safe and timeless backdrop, but with a creative space that’s anything but boring.”
White tile tips Shades: The biggest mistake people make is choosing the wrong shade. Determine your ambience first and then pick a shade to create it. Warm whites tend to have a yellow, red or brown undertone which creates a warm and cosy atmosphere. Cool whites have a grey, blue or green undertone which brings light to dark spaces and a fresh, bright look. Materials: Consider materials other than porcelain. Tiles are made from many materials including ceramics, polished marble and natural limestone. A luxurious layered look can be achieved when using a combination of materials. Shapes: It’s still hip to be square, but with a twist. One example is the resurgence of the Victorian encaustic tile. Elongated rectangles have been the norm but shapes are moving into hexagon, triangle, rhomboid (diamond) and chevron (V-shape) designs. Structure/texture: It’s not just the shape that’s changing — wall tiles come in a range of structures and textures that appear almost threedimensional. v

MAGICAL
mini gardens FAIRY GARDENS ARE a cute and creative way to keep a child’s imagination alive. Jo Matthews, owner of Shepparton business Delightful Rainglow, said it was lovely speaking to young children about their experience with their own fairy gardens. “I’m trying to keep magic alive for little ones,” Jo said. Children like the concept of a fairy garden because it is about “inviting fairies”. “(It is) stimulating their imagination,” she said. However, it is not just the little ones who are interested in fairy gardens. “You’re never too old for imagination,” Jo said. Fairy gardens are open to interpretation and can be big or small. They can be placed inside or outside, in a pot or incorporated into the garden. “I’m about to create one for my kitchen table,” Jo said. “Some people even make them in a terrarium with succulents … it’s all about that mythical side of things. “It’s really magical, they look great and they make everyone smile.” The selection of plants dictates the amount of maintenance required for a fairy garden.
Taylee also shares the garden with her little brother and they play with it together sometimes. There are currently two fairies in the garden. While she has not named the fairies yet, Taylee is now considering Violet and Pinky. Taylee has one plant in the garden at the moment and waters it occasionally.
Jo hears beautiful stories from children about how their gardens are going, how many fairies have visited and what they have left behind.
“(The garden) came with the pot and I think it came with the dirt, the house, rainbow rocks and a bridge, and it has a white table and white chairs,” she said.
Six-year-old Taylee Branch, of Shepparton, was lucky enough to receive her first fairy garden from her grandmother for Christmas.
“It also came with little tiny plates and teacups for the fairies.”
“I thought maybe it would be something good to enjoy,” Taylee said. Taylee’s fairy garden lives outside in a large pot plant. “I like to play with it,” she said. “It looks nice in the garden.”

The house in Taylee’s fairy garden even has a solar panel roof. “It lights up at night but I don’t really see it much because I always go to bed at night.” Taylee said she would try stay up a little later some nights to watch the pretty lights on the fairy house. v

Susan Marshall loves growing roses, as they survive in the harsh surrounding environment.
TIME TO
prune Since Susan Marshall moved onto her Kialla West property in 2000 she has built up a collection of more than 100 rose bushes. When she moved from her Shepparton townhouse, Susan realised the flowers she was used to caring for would not survive in the harsh environment. Roses, on the other hand, would thrive. Susan’s rose care routine includes a major pruning over a couple of weeks in winter. This tidies up the bushes, opens up the centre of the bush for air flow so bugs cannot multiply, and promotes new growth. During this time she also sprays the plants thoroughly with a copper pesticide to control diseases and white oil to suffocate pests.
Susan’s tips for pruning roses Precision: Prune next to an outward facing bud and also make sure the cut is angled, so when it rains the water runs off it and does not sit and rot.
Susan’s organic white oil recipe
Cleanliness:
Ingredients:
Make sure all the prunings are destroyed, and they are not put into compost bins because they harbour diseases.
Two cups of vegetable oil Half a cup of dishwashing liquid
Hygiene:
Method:
In theory you should disinfect secateurs in between pruning each plant to stop the spread of disease.
Shake ingredients together in a bottle or container. Dilute two dessert spoons of mixture in one litre of water in a spray bottle.
Water: I water two or three times a week in summer but not at all in winter. Safety: Wear long sleeves and thick gloves when you are pruning so you do not get scratches.
Our HOME
AUTUMN 2016
Use: Spray all parts of the rose, preferably after they have been pruned, but the mixture can also be sprayed while the plants still have leaves.

Terrarium care: Succulents only need to be watered when the soil they are planted in becomes completely dry. To water your succulents you should administer water to the soil with a controlled flow. – 30 g plain flour – Salt and freshly ground black pepper – 4-6 pieces of veal shin on the bone (about 1.8 kg) – 2 tbsp vegetable oil – 30 g butter – 1 carrot, peeled and thinly sliced – 2 onions, finely chopped – 250 ml white wine
– 400 g canned plum tomatoes, drained and coarsely chopped – 1 garlic clove, finely chopped – Finely grated zest of 1 orange – 120 ml hot chicken or veal stock For the gremolata – Small bunch of flat-leaf parsley, leaves finely chopped – Finely grated zest of 1 lemon – 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
Preheat the slow cooker, if required. Put the flour on a large plate, season with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Lightly coat the veal pieces with the seasoned flour. Heat the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole over a medium heat, add the veal pieces (in batches and with extra oil, if necessary), and brown thoroughly on all sides. Transfer to a plate using a slotted spoon, and set aside. Add the carrot and onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft. Add the wine and boil until reduced by half. Stir in the tomatoes, garlic, and orange zest, and add seasoning. Transfer everything to the slow cooker and lay the veal on top, then pour the stock over. Cover with the lid and put in the oven for 1 ½ — 2 hours until tender. Check occasionally that it is not drying out, topping with a little hot water if needed. For the gremolata, mix the parsley, lemon, and garlic in a small bowl. Put the veal on warmed plates, spoon the sauce on top and sprinkle with gremolata.
