here is a growing trend across all life stages to create the ultimate spaces within our homes, regardless of the budget at hand. This is evidenced through the array of decorative items on offer in beautiful niche boutiques right through to mainstream department stores. This edition has a large styling focus, with one home offering the ultimate feminine retreat — complete with pastel hues, velvety accents and every on-trend decoration a girl could ever dream of. Our beautiful baby nursery is a trend-setters’ dream too with its graphic prints, gender-neutral colours, adorable treasures for bub and plenty of quirkiness and individual flair. We also take an in-depth look at an increasingly important space in the home: the office. The ergonomics of a home office — where we place the desk, chair and storage items — is an incredibly important consideration, as is how we cleverly fit a space into an already full home and the way we style the space to create inspiration and boost productivity. There is no doubt that Shepparton natives love being outside in the beautiful local landscapes, so we decided to take a look at outdoor entertaining as the weather begins to cool.
With autumn now here there is no reason not to utilise these beautiful spaces, and with a few clever additions you can entertain outside year-round. Truthfully, autumn is my favourite time of the year and I choose to cherish it among the auburn-hued vistas, so my outdoor soirees are definitely now on the increase. DAMITA LAMONT EDITOR OUR HOME

ach morning for the past 17 years, Cheryl and Graeme Press have woken to private views of a natural spring creek and the sound of chirping birds. This provides a daily reminder of why they decided to move from the residential streets of Shepparton to the tranquil setting of Kialla. “It was just an open paddock (when they first purchased the property) but we loved it,” Cheryl said. “It has the creek running the whole length of the block, we just loved the natural aesthetics of it with all the beautiful red gum trees. “It changes all the time, you’ll drive home in the middle of May usually and out of the blue, there will be water in the creek.” When they first purchased the land, Cheryl, Graeme and their then young sons Sam and Angus (now 20 and 17) would venture with a picnic out to the block where they gradually designed the home. »

“We really wanted a lovely big space where we could all be together as a family.” — Cheryl
To soak up the northern sun the home is just one room in width and takes advantage of the views with large windows filling every wall. For the Press family the open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen area is the heart of home and hub of family activity. “We really wanted a lovely big space where we could all be together as a family,” Cheryl said. “The whole idea of this area was that we wanted an indoor outdoor space to make the most of enjoying our surrounds.” Inside and out the home complements its environment. A pared back colour scheme, natural stone and pale wood features create an earthy aesthetic while cushions and paintings add subtle pops of colour. When the family decided to renovate about a year ago they continued in the same organic style. A formal entrance now anchors the Nordic architectural design with clean lines, Gosford quarry sandstone and ceiling-tofloor windows while a new EuroTrend kitchen features warm wood and a Travertine bench top. From the kitchen French doors open to the great » outdoors.

With the boys often fishing and yabbying, Graeme said a fire pit down by the creek was a place for quality family time and cooking up a roast in winter. “It was a great environment for the boys to grow up in,” he said.
“When they were younger, they’d go camping down by the creek over Christmas and it was always a bit of a tradition to set up the tent.” It has taken a lot of work over the years but Graeme said the home was at the point now where the family could simply enjoy it.

romantic and feminine abode, with hints of glamour throughout, provides a place of relaxation and luxury for Lyn Chapman. With a soft and delicate palette of light grey, pink and white and subtle pops of accent colours, this home is rich in character yet demure enough to be a relaxing space. While sitting in front of beautiful French doors in Lyn’s Shepparton home, the light streams in and warms us as we chat about her styling adventures. Lyn purchased her home two years ago and has affectionately dubbed it her own little hidden gem — somewhere she can completely relax.

From the chaise lounge in her bedroom that was purchased in memory of her mother, to the trinkets that hang from the windows and fill the side tables, each of Lyn’s pieces was chosen with love. “The chaise lounge up in my bedroom is for my mother. When my mum passed away I wanted something to remember her by, so I bought that,” she said. “There’s memories attached to things that I buy so that when I sit there and read I can think of my mum, so I call it my Evelyn.” Beautiful styling additions include the dramatic mirrors, plush rugs and oversized couches.

The finishing touches have also been well thought-out, with a selection of side tables, vases and candles — many of which were surprisingly affordable. “In time, things will change and be different. You might get a new lounge suite; you never know how you want your looks to go,” Lyn said. “[By buying affordable pieces] they can go and you can get other pieces
“I can change the light pink to a real dusky pink for a winter look.” as time changes.” The home has undergone a number of larger styling changes too; the carpet was removed to reveal wooden floors, which were later polished, and the beige walls
were updated with on-trend grey. More changes are coming, with the kitchen tiles soon to be replaced with sleek subway tiles. Keeping the colour palette simple has allowed Lyn to
style her home as she pleases and leaves room for further styling changes in the future. “If you know in your head your colour palette and you stick to that, things will fit in, and you can just have a splash of colour,” she said. “I can change the light pink to a real dusky pink for a winter look. EVERYTHING in its place A home is a place where meals are cooked, laughter is shared and socialising is centred. There is no better place in a home to capture this value than the kitchen. STORY DAMITA LAMONT PHOTOGRAPHY JULIE MERCER
P
utting bricks and mortar aside, Marg and Frank Calogero designed their dream home based around the most important feature to them — the kitchen. Their Shepparton abode features a sleek, contemporary design and provides a space for everything they need. The envy of all home chefs,
Marg has every kitchen appliance you can dream of — and just around the corner from the kitchen is a whole wall of cupboards which stores them neatly. Touch-release cupboards in the kitchen provide easy access to homewares, and the long island bench has drawers on both sides and even a
pull-out power-point. Ensuring the space is clutter-free at all times, the walk-in pantry has a home for anything edible and the convenience of a workbench, allowing mess to be hidden when entertaining. “We love the tall door; modern design has none of those pokey little
(pantries),” Marg said. Once she has whipped up a meal from the family’s favourite cuisines, “Thai, Italian,Vietnamese, whatever food takes our fancy”, Marg takes great delight in opening out the glass bi-fold doors from the open-plan dining area and heading out to the stylish entertaining space. »

Mixing style with practicality, landscaper Paul Amodio told the Calogeros that they could still have their vegetable and herb garden, but on the wall. The flourishing garden features tomatoes, spinach, coriander, lemon myrtle, parsley, oregano, thyme, French tarragon, chives, garlic and strawberries. “There is always something out there to pick and bring in,” Marg says.
There are bluestone tiles underfoot, and a striking laser-cut roof-top sets a grand scene. Keeping with the industrial-style charm, a laser-cut screen depicting the word “friends” in many languages adds further punch to the space. “(This space) has given us double the room and is easier for us when
entertaining,” Frank said. As you cast a glance across any part of this impressive residence you will find that every element has been aesthetically considered. Marg and Frank realised that when they sat in the entertaining area, looking back through the home and out the window on the other side, the view was less than
desirable. Thus the idea of a bamboo feature wall and small succulent display was born, to provide “something to look at when sitting outside”. No stranger to envisioning then creating a beautiful home, this was the couple’s sixth time building. The theme of the Dennis Family Homes abode is consistent
throughout — sleek, contemporary, expansive and with a place for everything. With a home design that leaves not a point unconsidered, and two of their grandchildren living just a few blocks away, it is clear that the Calageros have created their own perfect abode with everything they could ever want or need. SURPRISE... it’s a boy! Opting for mismatched geometric patterns, Scandinavian flavours, a monochromatic colour palette and a splash of gold, this neutral nursery helped a Mooroopna mum keep the gender of her baby under wraps. STORY JESSICA BALL PHOTOGRAPHY JULIE MERCER
J
essica Douglas-Monks had a slight dilemma to face when her husband Dave Monks decided he didn’t want to know the gender of the couple’s unborn third child. She immediately tackled the task with creativity and flair, creating a trendy space without
ruining the surprise. “I knew I wanted monochrome and a kind of Scandinavian feel and then sort of a musical influence as well and it all came together from there,” Jessica said. “Dave and I both love music, Dave plays guitar and he’s always been into music
and I love the Beatles and John Lennon so we just went with that rather than a lot of the popular ones at the moment.” Jessica and Dave welcomed their first son Elias James Monks into the world on November 18 last year. After planning the nursery
down to each individual piece and with months of secrecy, Jessica was finally able to unveil the room’s final touches. Letting her creativity run free, the interior and product stylist at Luna & Wolfe said the design came first and practicality came second. » OUR HOME

Jessica created a gallery wall above the cot which she said would be added to and alter as Elias’ personality began to shine. “I knew I wanted those lyrics but I couldn’t find them anywhere in a print,” she said. “It was custom-made by a lady, her business is called Blacken Type, so she knew ages and ages before anyone else that I was having a boy and I just had to hide it.”
“When it’s a nursery you don’t know the baby yet so it’s an open canvas,” she said. “It’s hopefully something that will suit him and his personality. “It also allows us to add other things as he grows and changes and decides what he likes.” Black-dot decals on the greige-coloured walls act as an anchor for the pared-back colour scheme. However the focal point of the room is a gold geometric feature wall. “I thought black and white were pretty calm and they say that babies like to look at things that are monochrome,” Jessica said. “We added the gold at the last minute, that was going to be black but I wanted something a bit special.” Elias’ nursery is artistically peppered with raw timber features throughout and eclectic pieces, many custom-made or ordered from small businesses. Incorporating Dave’s banjo and prints featuring lyrics and quotes, the nursery reflects the family’s personality. It also references the couple’s passion for music and their other children Evie and Arya’s love for Harry Potter. “There’s no rhyme or reason to it, really,” Jessica said.
36
OUR HOME
AUTUMN 2017
Drawing inspiration from music throughout the design process, Jessica said it was only fitting to feature John Lennon with a custom-made print by Studio Cockatoo.
“I love the gallery wall, I think it looks nice and it’s personalised, you can expand it, change it. “The book corner is small at the moment, he doesn’t have many books of his own but I’ll probably add another shelf.” Each carefully considered piece adds character and comfort without compromising on style. STUDY in style W
hether you are a weekend dabbler or work from home full time, there is nothing less motivating than a dull or cluttered home office. Be it a dedicated room, a spare corner or vacant nook, create a zone that inspires you to work. A study should be practical and inviting. Key pieces such as a sturdy desk, comfortable chair and the right lighting all serve a purpose but nothing says they cannot
also ooze style. Keep it simple but make it personal with wooden accents, a splash of colour,
monochrome minimalism or mismatched prints. Hang things that inspire you — like beautiful prints,
photographs, meaningful quotes, or a world map — or get practical with a weekly wall planner or a calendar. Bring a touch of nature in with potted plants or fresh blooms and appeal to your senses with relaxing candles. While functional storage helps keep an office space in order, it can also look great with floating shelves, wicker baskets or a set of drawers. But don’t forget to hide those pesky cords to create a clean look.

office in the dining room, hallway, living area or under the stairs. “If there is a small nook in a house, you can put in a desk with space for one chair, with some cabinetry above for storage,” Mark said. “It’s becoming the norm because all devices are wi-fi connected and can venture around the house.” A study should have a practical place for everything and Mark said to think carefully about workflow in » the planning stage. “The other thing to consider is what type of equipment you’re going to be using — a laptop, a desktop computer or a printer,” he said. “We can put a hard drive under the desk, and we can put printers or scanners in a drawer or cupboard that’s hidden, or on a shelf for ease of access. “If overhead space is available you can have shelves for storage, or if you want a clean line look you could put them behind doors.” While natural light is ideal for a workspace, it is not always an option. Lighting is crucial and Graeme McKinnis from Applight said functionality must come before style. “The ultimate is to ensure light is coming from in front of you in the form of a quality desk lamp, or lighting sitting under overhead shelving or from the ceiling,” Graeme said. “If that is not possible, then the light from the centre of the room would need to be general and not recessed.” Graeme said direct and even light would prevent working in your own shadow. “If the lighting is behind you, it’s imperative that it’s even,” he said. “You also need to eliminate glare and you need to be careful it’s not concentrated.” Graeme said the easiest way to achieve this was by using LED strip lighting under overhead shelving.

hen it comes to painting a workspace, colour is a personal choice. Paula Dohrman from Walls and Windows recommends selecting colours that inspire and energise. Planning the design of a home office provides an ideal opportunity to have fun — think coloured
feature walls, a funky chair with an accent colour, or a vibrant artwork. Paula suggested using lime green, blue or burnt orange, or for a home office that will be visited by clients try decorating in line with the business branding. Haymes Paint described the following on-trend colours that are ideal for a home office.
Green: Nature’s most common colour, green represents balance. When used as a paint colour it creates a refreshing and revitalising effect. Blue: Known as the calming colour, blue represents security, orderliness and tranquility. Yellow: This happy hue brings a bright, cheerful and warm mood.

PATRICIA’S TIPS 1. Don’t kill with kindness — keep watering to a minimum. 2. Succulents thrive on sunlight — so if possible, place them in natural light. 3. Don’t place them in the vicinity of strong scented products like perfumes, candles and hairspray.

here is a lot to consider when putting together a practical office space. The following tips from Jenny Doherty at Budget Office Choice will have you knuckling down to work in no time. 1. In a high-traffic area like an office, a chair mat is essential to protect your carpet, floor boards or tiles. To determine the right mat for your flooring, do a pin prick test through the carpet and underlay. 2. Invest in a quality chair, preferably one that is Australian-made. Ergonomics are important; your feet should sit comfortably on the ground, or a foot rest, and the chair should support good posture including the back, neck and shoulders. 3. Before purchasing a desk, consider its placement in the space. Decide whether a straight desk or a desk with a return will best fit your needs, and if you would prefer fixed drawers or a mobile pedestal with the option to move. 4. A lockable filing cabinet is a must for any office. Set up a filing system that suits your workflow and consider options for suspender files — cardboard, double capacity, or PVC. Just don’t over-fill them. 5. When buying a printer, ensure you understand how much it costs to run. This can be worked out by dividing the cost of a printer cartridge by the number of pages it will print. As a rule, ink jet printers are cheaper to purchase but more expensive to run compared to laser printers.

ncorporate character and a pop of colour into a study by using potted plants. Patricia Sporle from Sistawood said plants not
only brought a stylish aesthetic to a home office, they were also proven to reduce stress, create clean air and increase productivity.
For a low-maintenance option, Patricia said succulents came in a large range of colours and textures, meaning no two would ever be the same.

he ideal finishing touch for a room, rugs can bring extra colour, texture and patterns to a space. “They’re great if you want to change the look of a room more often and keep up-to-date …throughout the seasons,” Choices Flooring Shepparton sales representative Leanne Muir said. “(A rug) can really add that wow-factor in a room too.” Aside from adding a statement, rugs can be used to complete a space and also enhance or define it. “Rugs are well-suited to family living areas with hard floors but if you have a hard floor in the bedroom, you could add a rug to give that warmth and comfort,” Leanne said.

‘GREIGE’ FOR gender-neutral nurseries STORY DAMITA LAMONT AND JESSICA BALL
D
elicate and serene hues which can transform any room into a soft and inviting space, are set to take over interiors this year. This pared-back approach to interior styling sees an assortment of light and midtone colours, along with greiges (a combination of grey and beige), paired with natural textures and design influences. Whether creating a whimsical baby nursery, bohemian living room, a sleek and modern kitchen, or a classic bedroom, this season’s popular hue greige is highly versatile. “Literally any colour will go with greige, and bounce off it,” Shepparton’s Walls and Windows owner Paula Dohrman said. The on-trend colour scheme of greige and other delicate neutral hues is ideal for creating a relaxing baby nursery too. “Any of these colours would look beautiful in either a boy’s or girl’s nursery as they are the epitome of gender-neutral,” Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr said.

AUTUMN 2017
“We’re seeing soft colours used more often in children’s spaces now, it’s less about traditional colours such as pinks and blues and these autumn hues are perfect if you’re painting before you know your baby’s gender.” To create a calming ambience, Andrea said it was best to avoid strong contrasting colours and intense patterns. “Pacifying palettes of soft muted hues are best for a nursery as the subtle undertones within many of these colours can help a baby
to relax and therefore may hopefully encourage sleep,” she said. The adaptable trend can also be incorporated into most areas in the home. “If you’re looking to create a tranquil and calm environment, try any of these colours — they definitely should not be restricted to nursery use only,” Andrea said. “This palette could be used in an older child’s bedroom, a playroom, a quiet sitting room or casual living space and even a master bedroom.”

BABY NURSERIES: AUTUMN STYLE TIPS Dulux creative consultant and stylist Bree Leech offers these quick tips to create a tranquil nursery: • Nursery colours have evolved and are more sophisticated, such as neutrals with grey undertones, mauve and blues. Try selecting a soft, warm shade offset with a cooler neutral hue, as a feature or detail. • Experiment with your paint feature by not following the architectural lines. Try changing colours underneath a picture rail or mid-way through a wall, and use a softer freehand line at the change for a more organic look. • Suede effects can be applied subtly for a soft, dreamy, matte texture — creating the perfect finish for the whole room, or for a feature such as the chimney breast or alcove. • Layers of texture can create a sense of intimacy and warmth in a nursery. Tactile materials are also an important feature in spaces for small children as they develop their sense of touch. • Comfortable spots to relax in a baby’s room are essential, they are a place to rest while feeding baby and as they get older to sit and read with them. Low seating allows you to be comfortable while close to your baby during floor time. Opt for removable covers that are easy to clean.

T
he recent trend with succulents has brought a pop of tranquil colour to living rooms and office spaces. This trend has also begun creeping into home décor, as accent colours in cushions and other home accessories and even as feature walls. This is evidenced by Pantone, the global colour authority, which announced that Greenery is the 2017 Pantone Colour of the Year. This fresh and zesty yellowgreen shade can be as demure or bold as you please. “It is the most beautiful colour; I like the depth, that it is an energetic colour, and that it brings that indooroutdoor feel,” Shepparton’s Walls and Windows owner Paula Dohrman said. “If you were really gutsy you could have it as a
splash-back tile or as fabric for dining chairs, or simpler items like as a plant in a house, towels, any pop of colour on your couch, as an artwork, or even just as a beautiful big fruit bowl.” This nature-inspired hue not only brings a sense of comfort and peacefulness to interior design, it also has a political undertone too. “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment,” Pantone Colour Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said. “Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalise, greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” OUR HOME

he warm summer nights might have drawn to an end but that is no reason to retreat inside. A well-designed outdoor space can smoothly transition from summer to winter and everything in between for year-round entertaining and relaxation. Shelter and warmth are keys to getting the most out of an alfresco area. Provide protection from the elements without blocking out the sunlight with a retractable canopy,
electronically-controlled sunroof, blinds or bi-fold shutters. As winter looms, brighten up a space with alfresco lighting and warm up with a fireplace, fire pit or heater. Complete a cosy, inviting outdoor space by adding a rug, layered cushions and chucky throws while incorporating a pop of colour and texture with woven and knitted fabrics, which can easily be stored away when not in use. WARM UP outside Designing an outdoor space for year-long use is all about creating warmth. STORIES JESSICA BALL

utdoor décor should be both stylish and practical. Select upholstered furniture and cushions that suit both these purposes. Longevity is of upmost importance and Paula Dohrman from Walls and Windows said choosing fabrics that resisted fading,
water and mould was the key. While the options are endless with block colours, stripes or quirky prints, she suggested bold peacock colours — deep, dark blues and emerald greens backed with chocolate and black, or freshen up with white to make any colour pop.
ustralians enjoy entertaining outdoors in every season and with the chilly autumn evenings upon us, heating is imperative. There are plenty of options on offer, from a basic portable gas radiant heater to an open wood fire, Paul Marshall from the Hot and Cold Shop said. For a cost-effective alternative, Paul suggested electric elements or gas radiant heaters which could be hung from the ceiling or mounted on a wall. “They’re very attractive to look at, they take up very minimal space and they’re convenient — just press a button and they’re warm within two minutes,” Paul said. “If you wanted to heat an entire area you would need two or three units, but it’s quite popular just to have one or two directly over your outdoor dining table.”
Photography: Escea.
However, while electric products can be used in an enclosed space, gas heaters cannot. To create a focal point in an alfresco area, Paul recommended installing a gas log heater or wood fire to create a cosy atmosphere. “They look fantastic,” he said.» OUR HOME

Functional OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Regardless of which décor style you love, there are plenty of options to choose from when furnishing an outdoor entertaining area. Neil Kuhl from Harvey Norman Furniture Shepparton shares his top tips for selecting the ideal piece. 1. When buying glass or wicker furniture, ensure the frame is aluminium rather than steel, as this will prevent rust. 2. To keep wooden pieces looking their best they should be oiled once a year, or twice if they are in direct sunlight. 3. While most outdoor furniture has UV protection, it is a good idea to use covers when it isn’t in use as it will eventually fade in the sun. Covers are also easier to wash than the furnishings themselves.
Photography: Escea.
“They really suit an outdoor space — you’ve got the flame, you’ve got the ambiance. “The outdoor Escea wood fire is fantastic for heating. It radiates a lot of heat but it also gives you the ability to cook. It has a three-tier cooking shelf in it so you can do anything from pizzas to a barbecue to slowcooked meat.” During the cooler months it is important to keep the warmth in and the wind out. Enclosing a space with shutters, blinds or screens adds protection from the elements, insulation and helps reduce heating and cooling costs.

While there are many products on the market, Teena Hicks from Dollar Curtains and Blinds said side retention blinds were a practical solution. Made from mesh, the blinds contain the area but still allow you to see out to the garden. “Side retention blinds offer UV protection, privacy and keep out the insects,” Teena said. “They are tensioned between channels, which also eliminate wind and rain. “The blinds can be operated both manually and motorised, enhancing the overall appearance of your home.”

ou’ve heard of that old chestnut “the dog ate my homework”, but it was a case of “the dog ate my outdoor furniture” that prompted Grace Angel and her boyfriend Todd Curtis to get creative with their outdoor setting. Realising pillows and cushions were out of the question, Grace set about coming up with an outdoor setting the cheeky two-year-old pooch
wouldn’t be able to devour. The couple has created a funky outdoor table utilising recycled timber and inset planter boxes, allowing for a unique take on patio furniture. The table, which comprises recycled timber pallets and merbau decking timber, includes an array of herbs set into the table top, adding a delicious pop of colour.

INTERESTED IN PROPERTY? WANT A CAREER CHANGE? If you are interested in property and would like a career change, why not enquire about giving it a go? That’s what Matthew Chilcott did in 1999 when he chose to explore the real estate industry. “I started in the late 90’s as an agent’s representative and progressed through to obtaining my licence and then purchasing my own agency in 2003. There were times when I nearly walked away in the first couple of years but I look back on those days as a fork in the road” Matthew says. It was during this time he feels he built a strong foundation for the multi office real estate company he now services the Goulburn Valley with. He is now looking for goal orientated people that want to work hard and play with a straight bat. If you feel you are up for the challenge, have good ethics and are looking for a career change, contact Matthew Chilcott as he started at the bottom and can help you succeed in a real estate career.

After moving 12 years ago, Dawn began to transform the blank canvas with her creative flare — doing it bit by bit and without a plan. “There wasn’t much here, only two big trees at the front so I had to get to work,” Dawn said. “I’d dig up a garden here and think I’ll put that there
and then a few weeks later I’d dig up another.” Picking up plants wherever she goes, the lifelong green thumb has gathered an eclectic collection of plants from smoke bush and yuccas to geraniums and salvia. Dawn said she didn’t like to follow the rules. “I always say I’m not buying any and come home with three or four and then
I have to find a spot to put them,” she said. “It’s higgledy-piggledy, but I like it like that with all different things; I don’t like everything set out regimental,” she said. “I should be more choosey but I look at something and think, ‘I like that’ and whether it will grow in the sun or the shade, and put it in.” » OUR HOME

After years of collecting Dawn has designed a relaxing sanctuary with garden benches set among the plants to enjoy the sunshine and a ‘cottage chic’ shaded area — perfect to entertain in with a pot of tea. With established trees and manicured lawns, the front garden is her favourite place to unwind and take in her handiwork. “You can just sit,” she said. “Even though you’re stiff and sore by the time you come in at night it’s still rewarding.” While Dawn would rather be outside than in the kitchen, when she does find herself cooking she takes delight in looking out the window to enjoy the fernery. She said that project was completed four years ago but a garden was never finished. OUR HOME

Part of the magic of spring bulbs like these is not just the colour show they create in spring, but that they are the gift that keeps on giving. These low-maintenance bulbs will typically re-emerge each year, providing you with a nice surprise of plants you had forgotten about. REPOTTING
AUTUMNAL advantages As autumn rolls around and the mercury drops, it doesn’t mean that your gardening days are over. The cooler months are a time for action and preparation, to ensure that come spring time your garden can be in full bloom. STORY ALANA CHRISTENSEN

here are a number of essential gardening tasks to be done during the coming months. The following tips for success are from Mooroopna and District Garden Club president Brenda Purden and member Margaret Schwarz.
PRUNING
Now is the time to prune your plants, preparing them for regeneration and new flowering during the coming months. Hydrangeas, geraniums and wisteria are plants that will benefit from a pruning as the temperature cools. REUSE AND RECYCLE
Once the leaves change colour and begin to drop, collect them up and use them as compost or as a cover for the base of your plants. The natural ground cover will ensure your clean-up is minimal and will provide great insulation for your plants. FUSS-FREE PLANTS
VEGGIE GARDEN
If you are looking to establish or extend a vegetable garden, there are a number of vegetables that will thrive in the cooler weather. Sweet peas, kale, lettuce and Brussels sprouts are ideal for cooler weather and will keep
Pots are a great asset to a smaller garden, or even if you just need a pop of colour. The next few months are an ideal time to repot plants, giving you a chance to swap around your pots if need be. If grouping pots together as a succulent vignette, use plants that have a similar water intake to help keep your watering program simple.
your kitchen stocked with nourishing home-grown goodness. BULBS
If you’re envisaging a spring garden full of daffodils and
tulips, the time to start planting bulbs is now. Brenda said bulbs should ideally be placed in the fridge for six weeks prior to planting to help them flourish.
One garden trend that boasts style and low maintenance care is the humble succulent. Growing in popularity in recent times, and also increasingly coming indoors, succulents are this season’s garden favourites. These tough and forgiving plants will transform your garden, and smaller varieties work perfectly in small pots for a windowsill — while only requiring the occasional water and light prune. OUR HOME

Tried and tested TIPS Handed down from family to family are little pearls of wisdom for keeping a cleaner home. STORY ALANA CHRISTENSEN
S
imple in technique, and using items from your own pantry, there are many cleaning techniques that won’t break the budget. Members of local Country Women’s Association branches share their top tips for cleaning.
OIL-STAINED CLOTHES
If oil has splattered on your clothes or if there is a stubborn oil stain you can’t seem to shift, Eastern Goulburn Valley Group CWA member Gwenda Metzke says humble dishwashing detergent might save the day. “If you put dishwashing liquid on greasy spots on clothes, rub it in and then wash as normal, it should lift the stain,” she said.
BARBECUE MESS
If an evening of barbecue cooking has left oil on your timber-work, detergent and water will help to get it as good as new, according to Eastern Goulburn Valley Group CWA member Margaret Guppy. If it is a stubborn stain, simply repeat until the mark is removed.
REMOVE STAINS
FRESH FRAGRANCE
Those pesky coffee and tea stains on your mugs can be removed with a little bit of salt and elbow grease, says Margaret. “Just pour some cooking salt onto a damp cloth and rub the inside of the cup and it’ll remove the stain.”
If you are looking for an extra hit of freshness, Caniambo CWA member Helen Wall suggests adding some vanilla to the water when wiping out your fridge.
BANISH NASTY FRIDGE SMELLS
Gwenda swears by one old trick for freshening up your fridge. “Put bicarb soda in a container in your fridge and just leave it in the back of your fridge, it will get rid of any odours.”
SPARKLING SHOWER
When cleaning your shower there is no need for shower cleaners. A mixture of white vinegar and bicarb soda will leave your shower sparkling, Gwenda says. SALVAGE A BURNT POT
If you have left a pot too long on the stove there is no need to despair, as Gwenda has a simple solution. “Put some bicarb soda and water in the pot, boil it up and it will remove the burnt bits.” GLEAMING BATHROOM BASIN
When removing soap residue from a bathroom basin, the humble terrycloth towel comes into its own, Margaret says. “Take an old piece of terry cloth towelling and cut it up into sections, and just rub the basin with water.” PEN STAIN
If you’ve accidently made a pen mark on vinyl, Margaret says there is a way to salvage it. “Spray some hairspray on it and it will make it run, and then you should be able to wipe it off,” she said. »

SPARKLING WINDOWS
To get your dirty windows sparkling like new again, grab a nearby newspaper and get to work, says Margaret. “Just use some crumpled up newspaper and plain water and wipe down the window,” she says. “You can use a dry sheet of newspaper to polish it up.” Helen also suggests using some methylated spirits on your windows to give them a nice shine.
When cleaning up cobwebs, Helen suggests adding a drop of lemon oil or lemon extract to your broom to keep the spiders at bay. “You only need a drop, but it will slow them coming back,” she says. UNBLOCK YOUR DRAINS
If you’re suffering from blocked drains, the combination of vinegar and bicarb soda will again save the day. Helen says to pour some of each down the drain, put the plug in and wait for the drain to unplug itself.

AN AUTUMN feast As autumnal hues transform the landscape, a fresh array of fruit and vegetables come into season. Figs, pears and apples are at their best, and beetroot, capsicum and parsnip are in abundance. Take advantage of the seasonal produce with the following tantalising recipes.
TIP
The relish can be made several days ahead, cooled, then stored in a covered bowl in the fridge.
Photography: Jamie Orlando Smith.
SWEETCORN AND GREEN CHILLI FRITTERS WITH RED PEPPER RELISH AND SMASHED AVOCADO Serves: 8 Red pepper relish • 1 red pepper, halved and deseeded • 300 g cherry tomatoes • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 red onion, finely sliced Smashed avocado • 2 ripe avocados • 4 tsp lemon juice • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Fritters • 90 g plain flour • 1½ tsp baking powder • ½ tsp sea salt
• 3 large eggs, beaten • 4 tbsp whole milk • 400 g sweetcorn, tinned or frozen (thawed), drained and patted dry on kitchen paper • 6 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 large green chilli, deseeded and finely diced • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander, plus extra leaves to serve • About 30 g butter, for frying • Crème fraîche, to serve
Method First make the relish. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/Gas 7. Preheat the grill to high. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Lay the pepper halves, cut side down, on the baking tray. Roast for 15 minutes, then add the tomatoes to the tray and roast together for a further 15 minutes, until the tomatoes have burst and are softened, and the pepper is well charred. Set the tomatoes aside. Place the peppers in a freezer bag, seal and cool for 5–10 minutes, then remove from the bag, peel off the skin and dice the flesh. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan, add the onion and sauté over a medium heat until soft and tinged brown, 6–8 minutes. Add the roast red pepper and cherry tomatoes, along with any of their juices, to the onion in the pan, then cook over medium heat for a couple of minutes, until the mixture cooks down and thickens to a relish consistency. Cool to room temperature before serving. Next prepare the avocado.
Peel and stone the avocados, then roughly chop the flesh and place in a food processor. Add the lemon juice and seasoning, then blend to a rough purée, or whizz until smooth, if you prefer. Cover and chill until ready to serve. For the fritters, mix the flour, baking powder, salt and some pepper in a bowl. Gradually beat in the eggs, then the milk to make a smooth batter. Stir in the sweetcorn, spring onions, chilli and coriander. Heat a large, non-stick frying pan over a mediumhigh heat with a knob of butter and when it is sizzling, spoon in ½ ladleful of batter per fritter, patting into shape. Fry for 2–3 minutes until golden, then flip over and repeat on the other side. Remove and keep warm while you cook the remaining fritters. To serve, top each hot fritter with a spoonful of the red pepper relish, smashed avocado and crème fraîche. Recipe extracted from Bread Street Kitchen by Gordon Ramsey and the Bread Street Kitchen Team (Hachette » Australia). OUR HOME

leave to cool completely. (Repeat the process for any excess batter.) To make the icing, beat the butter and sugar together until pale and smooth. Stir the coconut cream into the icing gently, being careful not to overmix it.You should have a spreadable and light icing. Dollop a tablespoon of icing on top of each cake and smooth it over the top surface with a knife, then finish with a sprinkle of coconut flakes. CHOCOLATE, PEAR AND HAZELNUT CAKE Serves: 12–16 Poached pears • 150 g caster sugar • 1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped • zest and juice of ½ lemon • 2 pears, peeled and cored Cake • 225 g dark chocolate, roughly chopped • 115 g unsalted butter • 6 egg yolks, lightly beaten • 90 g ground hazelnuts • 90 g (½ cup) rice flour • 60 g hazelnuts, lightly toasted • 6 egg whites • 200 g caster sugar • thickened (whipping) cream, to serve (optional) Method Place the sugar, 500 ml (2 cups) water, the scraped vanilla seeds and lemon zest and juice in a medium saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to the boil, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the peeled and cored pears and reduce the heat to low. Allow to simmer for about 10–15 minutes or until the pears are soft enough to easily insert a paring knife into the flesh. Turn off the heat and allow the pears to cool in the syrup. Once cool, slice each pear into four pieces lengthways. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Grease a 22.5 cm round non-stick springform cake tin. Line the tin with baking paper on the base and side cut to size. Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in the microwave. Melt it on High in 20-second bursts, stirring well in between each burst. Transfer the chocolate and butter mixture to a mixing bowl. Stir in the egg yolks and mix well, followed by

the ground hazelnuts and the rice flour. Mix well again — the mixture will thicken and look separated. Mix in the whole hazelnuts. Whisk the egg whites using an electric mixer into a stiff meringue then add the sugar in three batches. The meringue will become a little wet. At this point fold it into the chocolate base in two batches. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and arrange the slices of pear on top, going around in a circle like the hands of a clock. Bake in the oven for 35–40 minutes or until just cooked. The centre of the cake should still be a bit moist, as it will go fudgy once cooled. A crust should have formed on top of the cake. Remove the cake from the oven and cool in the tin before turning out. Once the cake has cooled, serve immediately with thickened cream, if desired.
