Welcome As the last of the bright summer sun kisses the earth it starts to take on a more muted hue, and so too does the land itself as it descends into auburn splendour.

T

his coppery season, with its milder weather and fresh crisp air, encourages us to reconnect with nature again and come down to earth after the silly season. What better way to do so than a trip to the country, or if you are the Durbridge family, a rural life lived in a beautiful heritage home in the pretty country town of Euroa. This 100-year-old home has received tasteful updates and extensions, providing a modern take on a traditionalmeets-provincial style. Read this story from page 9. With the year now under way it is time to look at the most popular home trends for 2018. Our edit from page 47 features what is hot — and achievable — in both décor and design. From rustic raw materials to botanical prints, muted earthy hues to vibrant artworks, take your pick from our shortlist. Speaking of trends, we have uncovered a Mooroopna home owned by a vibrant young woman which provides a checklist of what is hot and happening in the home. See her stylish smorgasbord of interior trends, which are set against a neutral backdrop so her décor can evolve as her taste does. Indulge in décor from page 21. In contrast, an Arcadia home allows the beautiful bushland to speak for itself — and

this is complemented by a clever use of natural materials. Dramatic timber panelling and rammed earth walls pack a powerful yet neutral punch, and the use of ceiling to floor windows throughout really connect the inside with the outside. See more from page 33. Happy reading! DAMITA LAMONT EDITOR OUR HOME

he young couple moved into the home in 2015, and the list of renovation jobs started innocently enough. With a cake business to run from home, Amalie knew the kitchen needed to be updated — so they started a three-year renovation blitz. Amalie laughs as she recounts their story, sitting on the home’s plush grey sofa — while children Ollie, 4, and Piper, 2, beside her, slurp on icy-poles. “We caught the renovation bug and now we’ve pretty much changed the whole house,” she said. 10

“Pinterest has been my biggest inspiration, I love the provincial style. I’d say the house is a modern twist on provincial.” The front of the three-bedroom home was built more than 100 years ago, with further sections added in the 1980s and 1990s — which Amalie said was an addition created by each family that had lived in the home. The beautiful original floorboards were a feature the couple were keen to retain during renovations, albeit with a twist. “There was a random square of the floor that was carpet so we got some second-

hand floorboards and sanded them back to match the rest of the floor,” Amalie said. “We knew it was between either a dark stain or whitewashed floorboards and we just thought with kids the black would work better … we just didn’t think white would have suited the rest of the house. We didn’t know how it would look but it just opened everything up,” Adam said. The result was striking; the dark floors providing a contrast to the crisp, white walls and the luscious grey sofas and oversized tan couches adding further colour dimension. »

Remnants of previous families remain throughout the home, including this detailed wallpaper in the master bedroom.

While there are modern touches throughout the home, there still remains a nod to its history. The original front door welcomes guests, provincial tapware in modern matte-black adorns the kitchen and bathroom faucets, and claw-foot bathtubs are focal points in the bathroom and ensuite. The kitchen splashback at first looks like pressed metal until further inspection reveals it to be tile. Similarly, the seemingly plain walls of the master bedroom, on closer look, reveal an intricate floral design

on the white wallpaper. The rustic ladders and large picture frame in the open-plan living area were rescued by the couple from a hard rubbish collection at the side of the road in Melbourne. The children’s rooms feature whimsical elements, reflecting their playful personalities. The entrance to Oliver’s room has a sign that reads “pilot in training”, which is positioned on the four-year-old’s whitewashed door — a relic from the

original part of the home. Reclaimed wooden bookcases are fitted to the walls of his room next to a handpainted picture of a light plane that hovers above the black wrought-iron bed. Piper’s room features a sleeker style, with white shelves attached to the wall with tan straps. The shelves are stacked with books and trinkets for the two-year-old. Currently the rooms are “Mum and Dad’s style”, but Amalie doesn’t expect it to stay that way. “I’m sure they’ll have their say soon.” » OUR HOME

“I didn't have a certain style in mind but I just picked things that I liked.”  – Jacqui

U

pon graduating from university Jacqui Hall knew she wanted to return to her Mooroopna roots. At 24 she purchased her first home; a modern two-bedroom apartment only a few minutes’ drive from her family home and built by her brother-in-law James Briggs. “I was looking for something a bit newer and this one popped up and I thought, ‘that’s perfect’,” Jacqui said. “It does give you a sense of achievement and I feel very blessed because if I was to live in the city there is no way I could have done this.” Delving into décor, Jacqui has injected her own personality into the home. With a vibrant palette, tactile layers, timber tones and splashes of copper she has forged a rich tapestry of character and comfort. “It’s me in a room,” she said. “When I bought it I realised I could make it whatever I wanted. “I didn’t have a certain style in mind but I just picked things that I liked. “I knew if I loved it then I’d like looking at it and enjoy it.” As a first home buyer on a budget Jacqui selected a few investment pieces to use as a starting point: a rustic timber dining table and a vivid abstract painting which now take centre-stage in the open-plan living area. Drawing pretty pinks, blues and greens from the artwork, each surrounding space is peppered with mismatched feminine flourishes and layers of texture. » OUR HOME

Jacqui Hall (right) with her housemate Emily Crow.

The newly built timber deck effortlessly links inside and out, and provides style and character all of its own.

“In every little area there is a little bit of colour, a little bit of metallic and a little bit of greenery,” she said. “Colour lifts your mood and makes it a more happy place. “I wanted to come home to something that I enjoyed and would make me feel good — and I feel like it does that.”

Jacqui’s cozy abode is a place for both quiet relaxation and quality time spent with family and friends. The timber deck outside, which was built 12 months ago, has quickly become one of Jacqui’s favourite elements of the home and one which seamlessly links indoor and outdoor living.

This might not be her ‘forever’ home but Jacqui said it was perfect for her current stage of life, and living there had sparked an enduring interest in interior design. “When I do graduate to a bigger house for whatever reason my style will probably change and I’ll have fun doing it all over again,” she said.  OUR HOME

S

eventeen years ago the then Katandra farmers found a piece of land in Arcadia and instantly knew they would one day call it home. The land was initially used to cut hay and run stock but Geoff and Maree Teague had bigger plans for it, and building began last year for their off-the-grid farmhouse. “When we brought it we had the idea of doing exactly this, building this house, selling the dairy farm and living here,” Geoff said. With country life running through their veins, it is only fitting that the Greg Pearson Building home tells tales of decades spent on the land. Every product used was considered for its sustainability and longevity, along with its natural-looking appearance; from the rusted Coreton exterior to the reclaimed timbers and rammed earth walls inside. Living green puts Geoff and Maree in control of their future, reducing bills and upkeep as they move towards retirement. With eaves, double glazed windows and thermally broken window frames, the home invites the winter sunshine inside, while blocking out the heat in the warmer months. In a celebration of nature and a feat of practicality, the rammed earth walls incorporate clay from the foundations. “They act as a thermal mass and absorb that heat so when the sun goes down that stored heat in the floors and the walls will radiate back out,” Geoff said. “I just love the texture and the mechanics of it — that’s the engine that drives this house and keeps the stability of the temperature.” At the heart of the design was the Teagues’ ever-expanding family. » OUR HOME

“The grandkids love getting out here on the farm and running crazy, the first thing they do is find a pile of dirt and just play in it.” — Geoff.

With four grown children and six grandchildren, the home had to be a space for the whole family to enjoy but also a retreat for two. “The grandkids love getting out here on the farm and running crazy, the first thing they do is find a pile of dirt and just play in it,” Geoff said. “I couldn’t find a plan that incorporated our lifestyle and so it’s comfortable and easy for our children and grandchildren to come and stay and not have to heat, run, and maintain that as well.” The result was a home in two halves. Anchored by a vast open-plan living and kitchen space, the first half is the couple’s haven with a bedroom and ensuite. Separated by an oversized door, the second half encompasses three bedrooms, a bathroom and a living area — which can simply be opened up when the extended family arrives. Large windows in the open-plan space are not only the perfect vantage point for soaking up the rural outlook, but allow for cross-ventilation. This is where Maree happily spends her free time, cooking with her little helpers while admiring the gum trees and the crops. “I just love the windows, and just walking down through the trees and the gullies is fascinating,” Maree said. While Maree said she and Geoff would probably never fully retire, they looked forward to enjoying the tranquil property they share with 50 Angus cows and calves. “It’s quite relaxing just going around and checking them,” she said. “For me there is always work to do on the farm, and now that we’re here we can get this farm set up the way that we have always wanted.”  OUR HOME

MILLENNIAL PINK

T

he biggest colour trend of the year, this hue provides fresh, unique and pared-back colour to a space. Dare to be different by using this muted pink in a feature wall or a bold couch, Paula Dohrman of Walls & Windows said. Or update a space with trinkets and soft furnishings. “It’s really calming,” she said. “It doesn’t put the boys off, which sounds crazy, but the girls can have a bit of pink and it’s not outrageous, it’s just soothing.” The ideal colour match for light timbers and soft leathers, Paula suggests adding a touch of millennial pink with floral photography.

SAGE GREEN

D

ubbed the ‘new neutral’ by the 2018 Pinterest 100 Style Report, this soft hue is rising in popularity. Whether it makes a bold impact on your walls or reinvigorates your living room cushions and bedroom linens, this fresh colour is sure to give your space a new lease on life. Paula Dohrman from Walls & Windows said the natural tone was perfect for creating flow between indoors and outdoors. “It’s earthy, organic — all those kinds of words that just make you feel relaxed,” she said. “When people have an alfresco or beautiful garden area, it’s just nice to transform what’s going on outside into the inside.” For a subtle sage addition Paula suggests decorating with indoor plants and natural images.

OATMEAL

T

he new neutral for paint colours is Oatmeal. Adding a touch of warmth to any room, Paula Dorhman of Walls & Windows said this serene shade was ideal for creating a simple and reliable canvas — regardless of how your interior style develops over time. “It’s just a really nice soft backdrop that’s not a commitment,” Paula said. “Oatmeal goes with everything — woven baskets, your light coloured timbers.”

FLORAL PATTERNS

G

raphic wallpaper, intricate cushions or the real thing — floral patterns are a versatile and romantic decor option. Whether a monochromatic print or a stunning work of art, these beautiful and delicate blooms will bring springtime vibes into your home all year around. Paula Dohrman from Walls & Windows said while statement murals were not for everyone, it was simple to add an organic touch without overcommitting. “If your couch or bedding is quite simple, then florals splashed on as an accent is not too over the top and it has a lot more longevity,” Paula said. “But I always say if you’re passionate about something go crazy because you’ll always walk in and love it.” Aquarelle Collection by Bluebellgray available through Walls & Windows.

TROPICAL PRINTS

V

ibrant and bold, large scale tropical prints are the perfect option for those who love greenery but struggle to keep plants looking lush, Paula Dohrman of Walls & Windows said. Seamlessly blending indoors and outdoors, she said introducing botanicals — through photo art, soft furnishings and indoor plants, real or artificial — would turn a home into a tropical escape.

BIG ART

S

electing art is simple, according to Angie Russi from Kaiela Arts — decorate with pieces you love and pieces that give you enjoyment. Even fabric can be hung as an artwork. “You need to be surrounded in your home by images and design that uplifts you,” Angie said. “Buy works that make you think about things in a different way. “A lot of Aboriginal art is narrative so there is often a story about it and there is for most art.”

Printed linen fabric available from Kaiela Arts.

HANGING TIPS

P

aula Dohrman from Walls & Windows said the bigger the art, the better. The interior designer shares her top tips for hanging the picture perfect masterpiece. • Before you buy, size-up the area by taping newspaper to the wall. Paula said this would help you understand how big the artwork needs to be as people would often naturally choose the smaller option. • Depending on the artwork, steer clear of black frames and instead opt for natural timber for a softer feel.

Artwork available from Walls & Windows.

• Consider the light in the area you want to hang the piece. Paula said for bright spaces you can get nonreflecting glass. • Avoid hanging artwork too high towards the ceiling. Paula said her pet hate was seeing people feel pressured to use an existing hook rather than starting from scratch to ensure it is at a comfortable eye level. • If the piece you love is not large enough for the wall try positioning two pieces close together to portray the image of a bigger piece of art.

KITCHEN UPDATE

N

eutral kitchens are not going anywhere, but Mark Boldiston from KitchenWise said two-toned cabinetry and a mix of textures were becoming an increasingly popular choice. “Now the trend is the different colours in the overheads to the base cupboard doors or specifically an island bench,” Mark said. “We’re seeing a lot of greys, light blues and — to soften things off even more — open shelving with timber grain.” When it comes to kitchen cabinetry, door knobs and handles, Mark said people were opting to mismatch styles with black and brass finishes being in vogue.

HIGH-END HERRINGBONE

F

rom wooden floorboards to tiles, this timeless pattern is making a comeback. Meticulously positioned, the herringbone pattern has become known for its subtle impact and classy appeal. Paula Dohrman from Walls & Windows said the simple pattern was a clever way to create a feature wall or floor with a high-end finish. “You can get quite an affordable tile and all of a sudden in becomes very interesting,” Paula said.

THE BUTLER’S PANTRY

M

ark Boldiston from Kitchenwise said butler’s pantries had become a kitchen staple for both new homes and renovations. “Some don’t even have a door — it’s just an extension of

the kitchen that gives it a larger feel,” he said. “If the walk-in party has a door on it you can cut costs by not putting any doors on the cabinets and just having open shelving.”

BRASS ACCENTS

F

rom tapware to fixtures and door knockers, brass is truly having a moment. Christine Wilcox from Sabac on High said brass was the metallic on everyone’s mind. “Brass is beautiful,” Christine said. “I think it’s once again going back to the neutrals and it’s just very earthy.”

RECLAIMED ITEMS

F

rom timber and windows to laundry troughs and even the kitchen sink, people are reclaiming second-hand gems for something a little different. “We work a lot with people who are renovating homes or closing in verandahs and doing home improvements,” Tim O’Brien from Wheeler Street Timber and Steel said. “We get a lot of people who are looking for something that is not available in a normal retail store.” Tim said it wasn’t hard to find inspiration within a neglected item and give it a second chance at life. “People are buying lots of older timbers to make feature walls, barnyard-type doors are pretty popular and just older furniture, lots of garden ornaments like the old farm wheel and plough disks,” he said.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS

M

ark Boldiston from KitchenWise said outdoor kitchen areas were high on wish lists. “Our lifestyles are to live outside, a lot of people want to bring the outdoors in,” Mark said. “People are putting in barbecues, wine fridges, rubbish bins and lots of drawers. “To do it correctly you need to use the right products, you need to use product that will withstand rain and all weather.”

RATTAN FURNITURE

B

ringing resort-style vibes to any space, rattan furniture pairs perfectly with tropical prints to create a tranquil escape in your own home. From chairs and tables to washing baskets and wall art, Christine Wilcox from Sabac on High said on-trend natural materials like sturdy rattan weather well, making it an ideal addition to a relaxing outdoor spot. “The natural products are warm,” Christine said. “They go with any theme, whether Hamptons or rustic, they blend in with anything. “We also find people are mixing a lot of rattan; you’ll find baskets, or furniture with rattan sides and metal accents, or rattan with some timber.”

CONCRETE ACCENTS

C

oncrete is not exactly new but as the science behind it has developed it has become the material of choice. Durable and effortlessly sleek, Mark Pungitore from Concrete Culture said concrete is simple to customise and it complements timber and metal. “The trend has always been there; just now concrete is so much more versatile and its aesthetics are longer lasting,” Mark said.

From bench tops and wall panels to coffee tables and sinks, Mark said the free-forming stone lends well to industrial vibes and modern designs. “If we can make a mould of it we can make it and even if we can’t make a mould of it we can carve it,” he said. “It’s a product we can use in nearly every room in the house with accent pieces.” Its robust nature makes concrete perfect for outdoor kitchens and wet areas, including fire pits.

hether the potential buyers are setting out to buy their first home, purchase an investment property or find a family home, it is key that they are able to envisage themselves living in the space. For interior designers such as Paula Dohrman from Walls & Windows, that often means staging a home to ensure it is as enticing as possible. When it came to fitting out a threebedroom Edwardian-style home in Shepparton in preparation for sale, Paula said settling on a design that was inviting, but not polarising, was at the forefront of her mind. Beginning with a trio of beds, a pair of sofas and a solitary dining table with chairs, Paula pooled resources with her client to assemble a cohesive look throughout the home, adding character to the blank canvas. “It was all about making the space feel spacious, introducing spots of colour and really making it so they can imagine themselves living there,” Paula said. “For those who just walk into the home and are thinking about the financial side, staging the home can help them see the scale of the home and how it could work laid out.” With touches of navy and greenery throughout the home, the subtle hues create a variance of colour. Woollen rugs, cow hides and plush throws add texture to the home. The old lighting fixtures made way for sleek, geometric pendants and other modern fittings, tying the space together. While the process of laying out the furniture within the home was a day of shifting, adding details before taking them away and replacing them, Paula said staging a home takes much longer than 24 hours. “The thought process is a lot longer, you need to really know the house so that you can envisage it and know what will suit it and what will look good,” she said. “It’s also about recognising the character of the house, it has a particular style and anything you use to style the home should complement that. “Less furniture and clutter is best, making the space look big is good and texture is wonderful.” » OUR HOME

TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR SALE CONSIDER A FRESH COAT OF PAINT Although time intensive, a fresh coat of paint can instantly brighten and update a space, helping prospective buyers to feel more at home in your house. DON’T FORGET THE GARDEN With the modern love for outdoor living and alfresco dining, a little TLC outside will go a long way. DECLUTTER Clutter can be overwhelming for people trying to envisage their own belongings in a room, so consider removing unnecessary items while staging a home for sale.

Birds sing softly in the background as Kaye Poulton works away at the pottery wheel in her garden studio. » STORY JESSICA BALL PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY DANIEL

OUR HOME

AUTUMN 2018

W

hat started as a social way to channel her creative energy has become a passion spanning decades for the Mooroopna ceramic artist. “It’s the tactile quality of it,” Kaye Poulton said. “It’s the fact your hands are shaping something that’s very plastic in the moveable sense. “When I first started it was something to fulfil that creative desire for a short time, but I never expected it would turn into something that would take all my time.” In the 1980s she purchased a secondhand homemade pottery wheel and a small gas kiln, igniting a lasting love affair with throwing and raku firing. When Kaye and her family decided to move to Mooroopna 24 years ago, the shed/studio was her top priority. Surrounded by soothing trees and birdlife, it is where she spends much of her time. “It’s quite rural out here and it’s got to influence us in some way I think,” she said. “I used to have a policy of never working in the shed on the weekend, particularly before the children left home, but now it all sort of blends into one; but I’m quite happy in that space.” Often inspired by nature, Kaye’s style has organically developed and over the years she has handcrafted figurative works, pieces for exhibitions and homewares. Kaye is currently working on an installation for the Shepparton Art Museum showcase called Waterline, inspired by the horizontal marks left behind on trees as floodwater retreats. The process begins with visualising the piece and selecting the clay, followed by Kaye’s favourite part: the making or the throwing, before the creation is bisque fired. Adding another dimension to her skill set, Kaye makes her own glazes that create pattern and colour with dipping or pouring techniques, before re-firing. Opening the kiln to reveal the finished products can be either a moment of happiness or an anti-climax for Kaye. “There’s a chemistry to it,” she said. “Things can change in the kiln. “Sometimes what you visualise and what you end up with aren’t exactly the same. “I still get quite anxious about the opening of the kiln because you can never be entirely confident that everything has gone well. “It’s part and parcel of the ceramic process and that’s what makes it interesting because there is that element of surprise.” Waterline will be on display at Shepparton Art Museum in March.  OUR HOME

GROWS A PORTABLE

With gardening gloves on, a trowel in hand and the warm summer sun beating down, Euroa local Tara Whitsed stands at her potting station in the backyard of her modern home. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY ALANA CHRISTENSEN

A

lthough admitting she found her mother — proclaimed “gardening nerd” Diane Walton — “lame” when she’d spend hours in the garden when she was younger, the 25-year-old said she now understands the obsession. “Mum is a fanatical gardener; she got me started first — mostly with herbs. Now

I’ve sort of developed a collection,” Tara explained. What started as a desire to bring more vibrancy to her rented home has turned into a hobby for the young journalist, with cuttings lovingly cultivated in a number of pots. A newly minted potting station, made

by her boyfriend Eddie Carracher from recycled wood pallets, has grown Tara’s dedication to gardening. The station now spends its days covered in dirt, plants, pots and pruning shears. “The idea was to give me a place to pot up and it took a lot of the gardening stuff out of the garage. decoration piece and also just really practical,” Tara said. “Succulents are my go-to. They’re just so easy and look really nice in a garden all potted up.” As a renter, Tara said she had to be creative about her garden and find ways to build the garden she wanted. “I’ve literally never put my own plant in

the ground,” she said. “When we move I want to take it with me. Having them all in pots it’s not that time consuming to do and we can just take them with us.” Every element of the garden is easily movable, whether it be the varied pot plants, the herb garden or the newly made potting station.

Having now fallen in love with the simple act of gardening, Tara has some simple advice for those who don’t have much space or time to dedicate to their garden. “Just start. Get some clippings from a friend or something; once you start gardening you’ll get a love for it and you’ll understand why people do it,” she said.  OUR HOME

A seasonal HARVEST

As summer turns to autumn and the leaves begin to change, a plethora of fresh fruit and vegetables come into season. From creamy avocados to zesty lemons, an abundance of produce is at its best at this time of year, so why not cook up a feast for family and friends?

AVOCADO CHOCOLATE MOUSSE Serves 6 INGREDIENTS

• 100 g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 400 g avocado flesh • 125 g (½ cup) coconut cream • 105 g (3 ½ tbsp) pure maple syrup • 35 g (⅓ cup) raw cacao powder • Fresh raspberries, to serve • Whipped cream, to serve METHOD

TIPS 400 g is the peeled avocado weight with the stone removed (i.e. the avocado flesh weight). This is about two to three avocados. If you don’t have any raw cacao on hand, you can use regular cocoa powder instead.

1. Gently melt chocolate (either in a heavy-based saucepan over the stovetop or in a microwaveproof bowl in the microwave), stirring occasionally, until chocolate is melted and smooth. Set aside to cool slightly. 2. Scoop avocado flesh into a food processor or high-powered blender. Add coconut cream, maple syrup and cacao powder and process until almost smooth. Scrape down sides with a spatula and process until smooth. 3. Add melted chocolate and process until combined. Scrape down sides with a spatula and process until smooth and creamy. 4. Transfer into six serving glasses and serve topped with raspberries and whipped cream (optional). Edited extract from Sweet Nourish by Louise Keats, published by Simon & Schuster Australia, $39.99.

PET-PROOFING

purrfection

Bringing home a new pet is a special time but without proper pet-proofing it can quickly become a nightmare. STORY JESSICA BALL

W

ith 15 years' experience as a vet, Dr Anna Richards from Causeway Veterinary Clinic in Mooroopna shares her essential tips for

living with curious kittens and playful puppies. To protect your possessions and ensure your pet's safety, Anna said you must keep

things such as poisons and toxic foods out of reach. “If you leave something on the ground that's chewable, more than likely the puppy is going to pick it up and chew it and it may get stuck somewhere and then suddenly it becomes an emergency.” Anna also recommends shutting off areas of the home, especially carpeted rooms and rooms with swallowable trinkets, by closing doors and installing baby gates. She said the best sleeping area is the laundry, which provides pets with adequate inside space without having access to the whole house. The laundry is also best the ideal place for kitty litter, which should be kept out of the way of young children. To preventing worm or flee infestation in your home Anna suggests regular worming and flee treatments — as flees love carpet and they can jump from backyard to backyard. Outside, Anna said it was crucial to secure your backyard, particularly fish ponds and swimming pools. “For a puppy even what may seem like a very small gap in a fence they can probably get through, and for bigger dogs if you have something up against the fence they can use that to jump over,” she said. 
