SHEPPARTON NEWS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2016
Bed time routine The best way to ensure your child starts their day right is to make sure they are getting a good night’s sleep. Primary school-aged children need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night, so it is important you promote healthy sleep habits. Developing a bed time routine that encourages quiet time prior to sleep is the best way to prepare your children for sleep. Turning off all electrical items and reading a book together is a great way for your child to unwind. Ensure you keep the routine similar every night for maximum effectiveness. Other ideas for quiet-time activities include: having a quiet conversation
with your child about their day, colouring, or writing in a diary. Getting ready for bed can also be made into a part of your night-time routine. Have your child shower and brush their teeth and hair just before they get into bed so they develop healthy hygiene habits. Some children may enjoy a glass of water or warm milk before bed, but be conscious about filling your child’s bladder before sleep if they have bedwetting issues. Start your bed time routine at roughly the same time every night, so your child can recognise it as time for rest and look forward to their quiet time.

Lunch box ideas Children need to eat a variety of foods to be healthy, so it’s important to ensure they receive a balanced diet.
should be your first choice for hydration, it can be substituted for low-fat UHT milk occasionally.
Primary school-aged children need to eat about five servings of vegetables and legumes and about two servings of fruit each day, according to Nutrition Australia.
Lunchbox one: • Lean meat and salad wrap in pita bread • Mixed berry snack pack (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) • Wholemeal fruit muffin • Reduced fat UHT milk
Sometimes it can be hard to convince children to eat healthy foods. Parents are encouraged to involve their children with the lunchbox packing process and let them choose the best healthy alternatives themselves. Nutrition Australia says lunchboxes should be made up of four components: a main item, a fruit or vegetable snack, a second snack based on a core food, and a drink. It is clear that water is the best choice for hydration, with some schools across the Goulburn Valley becoming “water only schools”. Water can be made fun by adding wedges of citrus fruit and while it
Lunchbox two: • Couscous salad with roast vegetables and chickpeas • Celery and carrot sticks with hummus • Natural yoghurt • Bottle of water Lunchbox three: • Tuna and salad wholemeal sandwich • Melon cubes (watermelon, rockmelon, honeydew) with Greek yoghurt • Dried fruit and nuts* • Water with lemon and lime wedges *If your school has a no nuts policy you should refrain from including nuts and nut products in your child’s lunchbox.
