In the thick of summer on a Friday or Saturday evening the streets are filled with the sounds of laughter and music, as people party into the balmy night. It is times like these when many home owners are drawn to noise reducing home improvements.
When I moved from Tasmania to Shepparton with my husband a couple of years ago, we moved into a tidy little unit and thought we had d hit the jackpot.
Our perfect little rental was positioned on a busy 60km/h street, and close to the road’s edge too, with cars and trucks zooming up and down it at all hours of the night. What ensued was a year-and-a-half of minimal sleep at nights and intense coffee consumption to get through the days, until we purchased our own home six months ago. The ironic thing is that now, as home owners, we are actually in a position where we can do things to the home to fix noise pollution – but we live in a quiet area and with sound proofing already sorted.

Heavy curtains Thicker, heavier curtains are great for blocking out noise and you can also layer window treatments for further effect. Consider having roller blinds mounted on the interior of the window to help block the sun and keep some noise out and finish off the look with a set of heavy curtains that matches the décor. In general, a multi-layered plan is the best option for all homes to prevent noise pollution – so consider a few of the options above.
