Editor’s note It has been more than six months since I moved into my new home and I am finally starting to nest. Slowly the neat and bare surfaces have started to become adorned with a few decorative items — I framed some old photographs in old frames I had been hanging on to, brought out some of my decorative crystal vases for display and a throw rug from the back of the cupboard. Now I think I may be ready to spend a few hard-earned dollars on some things that are shiny and new. When my husband and I first moved into the home I — as organised as ever — unpacked, washed and stored away all of our possessions within a matter of days. (He, on the other hand, dealt with all the “man jobs” like moving heavy items and putting things together.) With everything just as we liked we considered the job done and, as I couldn’t fathom having to do a single extra thing to the home after all that, I have put my feet up for the past six months. But enough is enough and there is only so long you can stare at a bare wall and a lounge room with lovely modern hues but no variation to break them up.
