Editor’s note My formal living room has been a point of much reflection in recent times, its bare walls seeming in need of some adornment. It has been six months since I moved into my new home and that half-year itch is certainly here; it’s that time when you know the house well enough to start envisioning design plans. With its mushroom-grey walls, grey carpets and a funky brick feature wall, our home offers the perfect neutral backdrop. I have been mentally holding up colour charts against the walls in an effort to decide what colour art-works I want this room to feature, and right now I am thinking some on-trend jewel tones. My style is more classic while my husband leans toward modern and minimalist — thus our décor meets in the middle; I feel that the brick wall lends itself to a Brooklyn-inspired loft/warehouse vibe, albeit a pared back version and perhaps with some classic underlying principles. Industrial chic in its entirety wouldn’t suit our taste or the overall look of the home, so it is more an essence than a main design principle.

Top décor trends during the past year With 2018 well under way, let’s look at some of the biggest home décor trends for the past year that are still going strong. Jewel tones: Bold, deep colours are in this season in hues of rich amethyst, emerald green and ruby red. Jewel tones are ideal for walls or as accent colours for cushions, vases, throw rugs, candles and picture frames. Green with envy: Green is hugely popular this past year, in particular hues of bottle green, dark green, pastel green and grass green. Matte attack: Matte black finishes are still going strong, with their sleek and modern look. Kitchens and bathrooms are being adorned with matte black fittings and appliances, giving these rooms a sophisticated and luxurious look. Magical marble: Marble is no longer reserved for benchtops and bathroom vanities; it is now being featured on tiles, wallpaper, carpet and fabrics. Classic black and white is no longer the only option, either, with the colours gold, pink or grey also being added to the mix. Pair with other on-trend materials such as timber or metal for an extra-luxe look.
