Why Australians aren’t leaving the nest

Editor’s note At this stage of my life, I cannot imagine living at home with my parents and I am certain they cannot imagine it either. As an independent woman, and one who is married and approaching the big three-O, O, I do believe I am no longer a contender for this arrangement. But I didn’t always view things this way. y. As soon as I finished college, I moved four hours away from my family to start university and I went straight into the rental market. As someone who is highly independent I was thrilled to have my own space. Then when I was 22 I had just graduated from university and was about to start my journalism cadetship in my home town, so I did the unthinkable … I moved back in with my parents. I was there for a whole year while I saved up to buy my first car outright and to get some extra money behind me. I resumed my life as an independent young woman until age 27 when my husband moved to Shepparton to start a new job and I had to wait another three months before commencing my job over here. Managing two leases was too expensive so I moved back in with my parents for this time.

Many Australians are still living with their parents through their 20s, 30s and even their 40s. Humorously branded the Costanza Effect (inspired by 90s television show Seinfeld), the number of adult children moving back home with their parents or never leaving in the first place is on the rise in Australia. This can be attributed to many different influences, but the most common reason is the rising unaffordability of house prices across the country. Here is a more thorough look at the reasons why. The realities of home ownership in Australia Safety concerns, relationship breakdowns, health issues and financial problems are also contributing to the number of adults living at home, according to Multigenerational Family Living, a book by University of New South Wales academics Edgar Liu and Hazel Easthope.

Comforts are a drawcard However, for many, the comfort and security of a roof over their head is enough to encourage them to stay home. Also enticing are the support, the family connection, the company and the fully-stocked fridge. It can offer a genuine opportunity to get ahead financially too; many young Australians will move home for a period of several months while building a house or to save for a deposit on their first home. Downsides of living at home Living with your parents can invite feelings of childishness as well as a lack of privacy, and relationships can turn sour if boundaries aren’t respected. Living at home is no doubt a great idea and experience for some, but for others it can be highly stressful, so choose wisely even if it is only a temporary solution.
