Unique ways to save for a home

My husband and I were married in January then after our blissfully financially-unaware honeymoon we returned back to our harsh reality. It was time to cut down on our debt and finish saving for our first home.

People have always found creative ways to save up for a home deposit. Second jobs, extra shifts, living at home for longer, sharing with flatmates – these are just some of the time-tested options.

In this week’s Page 2 feature we are exploring some creative ways to save extra money towards a house deposit so I thought I would share some of my own recent experiences too.

However there are other ways to help you save more quickly, without risking burnout or complete misery along the way.

The journey for my husband and I was definitely more restrictive than it was creative, but nonetheless it was highly affective – as by July 1 we were signing the contract to purchase a home. First we looked at the debt we had accrued in the lead-up to our wedding day (a common occurrence as the budget always blows out more than you think), and figured out a timeline of how best to pay it off with minimal interest accrued. Then we looked at the remaining money we had each week and we analysed every dollar. The result was cutting out all bought lunches and taking the time to make each meal from scratch, giving myself a weekly coffee allowance of $20 (not the usual $40/$50ish), and choosing to go for picnics and
